"Introduce and promote a latest technology and equipment for magnetite. It’s featured of purifying concentrate, lowering tailing grade, high concentrate recovery rate and stable operation. HUATE® New Style Elutriation Electromagnetic Separator is an equipment to obviously upgrade magnetite. The slurry is fed into separation area through feeder. It’s more suitable to purify and thicken the high grade and ultrafine iron powder. Compared with traditional elutriation equipment, it adopts new technologies in removing impurities, operation, large-scale, process simplification, water-saving, remote control, etc. It optimizes the comprehensive beneficiation index, expands its application scope, reduces resource wastes and increases economic benefits.INTRODUCTIONMagnetite accounts for a comparatively great proportion in various iron resources. As it’s a kind of strong magnetic mineral, we must adopt the weak magnetic separation equipment in magnetic separation process to realize removing Si and lowering impurities. While it cannot do very well to use the common weak magnetic separation equipment in the final cleaning to remove Si and lower impurities. At present, the plants, adopting single magnetic separation process to realize cleaning and removing Si and lowering impurities, are in the minority. Most magnetite plants adopt the flotation separation process to remove Si, lower impurities and purify the concentrate. Though with stable indexes and high Fe recovery rate, the flotation process is very complicated, high-cost and with lots of environmental pollution. If adopting the weak magnetic separation equipment can realize removing Si, lowering impurities and the final cleaning, the magnetic separation process should be the primary choice."

Lightweight metals such as magnesium show potential in replacing aluminum alloy castings for engine cradles, cylinder heads and transmission cases. Unfortunately, magnesium alloys are susceptible to entrapping oxides and other impurities during casting that hinder strength and ductility. The current study examined various filter sizes and configurations with the aim of improving the mechanical properties of permanent mould cast AZ91E. The unfiltered casting had a yield strength, tensile strength and ductility of 93.3 MPa, 153.3 MPa and 2.2 % respectively and increased to 96.5 MPa, 167.0 MPa and 3.1 % with the use of a fine mesh filter within the well of the mould. The increased strength and ductility was likely due to the filtered castings containing fewer inclusions on their fracture surfaces as compared to the unfiltered castings.

Two prime sources of input impurity are considered: impurities in the material feed and from reagents. Nor is China unique; other plants have had problems as well. There were toxic leaks in the 1990s from Mountain Pass, and the Mitsubishi Bukit Merah Plant (built in Malaysia in 1958) required a $100 million clean-up."

"Nickel powder can be produced by the reduction of a nickel ammine complex solution by hydrogen at high temperature and pressure. To minimize the deposition of fine nickel on the surface of the reactor and other equipment, seed crystals are added to the initial solution to promote nucleation of the nickel powder. Such seed crystals catalyze the precipitation of the nickel particles on the surface of the seed and enhance grain growth. In this study, nickel nuclei were precipitated by the addition of a polymer to the nickel ammine complex solution, resulting in the production of nickel powder. Thus, we herein propose a model that explains the effect of the polymer in the precipitation of nickel nuclei.INTRODUCTIONNickel powder is commonly produced via a hydrometallurgical process from the hydrogen reduction of a solution containing a nickel ammine complex at high temperatures and pressures, and this process was commercialized in the 1950s by Sherritt Gordon (Sherritt International, Canada, Benson & Colvin,1973; The Staff, Research and Development Division, Sherritt Gordon Mines, Ltd., 1958).In the above transformation, upon the injection of hydrogen gas into the solution, nickel is reduced as outlined in Equation(1), ultimately resulting in the production of nickel powder.Ni(NH3)nSO4+ H2?Ni+ (NH4)2SO4+ (n-2)NH3(n:2–6)(1)In this process, seed crystals are added to the reactor to suppress the precipitation of fine nickel (scaling) and to enhance nickel reduction (Benson & Colvin, 1973; Mackiw, Lin & Kunda, 1957). More specifically, iron sulfate and a small amount of dispersant polymer are added, which leads to the formation of nuclei. Upon subsequent hydrogen reduction, the reduced nickel can then be deposited on the nuclei, allowing nickel particle growth to take place. However, this results in iron contamination in the final nickel product, and so the use of pure nickel as a seed crystal is desirable to produce high quality nickel powders."

This paper describes the development of the concentrate leaching plant at Bagdad and the operational results from start up to present. Optimization efforts and an approach to mineralogical modeling of the concentrate to calculate oxygen utilization are also presented.

"The Orion gold mine, located 7 Ian northeast of the town of Malartic, Quebec, was discovered in mid-1985. Underground exploration was undertaken in 1986 leading to commercial production in 1988. The upper part of the orebody was exploited above the 125 m level and a total of 131 090 t at an average grade of 5.31 g/t gold were extracted.This paper describes the authors' current knowledge and interpretation of the geology, gold distribution, and structure of the Orion No.8 ore zone deposit. The deposit is an epigenetic lode gold occurrence somewhat unique in that both quartz-vein type and pyritic type of gold ore occur side-by-side. It is located within the Marban-Noriartic Deformation Corridor (MNDC) formed during a first deformation stage (D1) The MNDC is a well-defined regional structural feature in the Val d'Or - Malartic mining camp. Primary gold mineralization is associated with the D1 event and is represented by pyritized, silicified and brecciated basaltic lavas enclosed by ultramafic flow units. The ore zone is concordant with the MNDC. Felsic intrusions are spatially related with the ore zone, but their role in the genesis of the ore has yet to be dermed.A second deformation event (D2) resulted in local folding, a second schistosity (S2) and reverse faulting. Gold remobilization, the formation of the gold-bearing quartz breccia and the emplacement of the main quartz vein at the No. 8 zone deposit were associated with this event."

Certain gas wells tend to form hydrates in the production tubing. This paper outlines a method developed and used by the Author's company to overcome the problem. The injection of glycol to control hydrates results in sufficient dehydration to allow the gas to be trans-ported through a field-gathering system b a treatment plant. Sub-surface injection of glycol also offers a method of introducing corrosion inhibitors into the gas stream. The major operating difficulties have been overcome and the system is now in use in the northeastern part of British Columbia.

Introduction Up to the present, the operation of small mills for the treatment of gold ores has not been favoured in Canada to the extent that it has in other countries. For instance, a list of the operating properties in Southern Rhodesia, published in The Rhodesian Mining Journal of November, 1934, shows for the month of September, 1934, that there were over 500 small mills treating less than 50 tons per day, and the majority of these between 5 and 25 tons. They are operated by individuals, syndicates, and small mining companies. It is presumed that the operations are profitable, although from the published figures of the tonnages treated and the yields, it is difficult for one familiar with Canadian operations to understand how this can be possible, in the majority of cases. Most of these small mills employ stamps with plate amalgamation and with, occasionally, tables to produce a concentrate. Enquiries have been received from many parts of the world respecting milling practice suitable for small gold mines and the type of plant used in Canada. The tenor of these enquiries leaves the impression that the majority of the writers assume that the practice would be similar at all small properties. This, of course, is not the case. Conditions vary widely, and what would be a suitable mill for a typical Nova Scotia ore would not necessarily be wholly adaptable to many ores in Ontario, Quebec, or British Columbia. This paper has been written with the intention of inviting discussion, and it is hoped that, by such discussion, the subject will be more fully dealt with than has been possible in the time at the disposal of the writer. Only more or less standard principles and practices have been dealt with, and, purposely, no reference has been made to plants using mills of the Hadsel, the Nutt, or the Gibson type. As there is available but little reliable information on the costs of installation and operation of small mills, it is also hoped that those contributing to the discussion of milling practices for small mines will be in a position to give these data for the benefit of those contemplating the erection of small plants in Canada. Although it is difficult to generalize, it can be said that there are three types of gold mills commonly used at small mines: (1) Amalgamation and Gravity Concentration; (2) Amalgamation and Flotation; and (3) Cyanidation.

"History of Tara Mines Ltd.Tara Exploration and Development Company Ltd. was formed in Canada by Irishmen in 1953. The discovery of an orebody approximately six miles from the historically famous Hill of Tara in County Meath was a wild dream . Nevertheless this dream became a reality. Tara Mines Ltd. was formed, and the mine developed some 35 miles northwest of the City of Dublin in the Irish Republic.Tara's original drilling program indicated a zinc-lead orebody of approximately 60 million tonnes grading at 10.1% Zn and 2.6% Pb. The terms of the mining lease stipulated that the Irish government would acquire 25% equity interest in the operation. The mine was thus owned 75% by Tara Exploration and Development Company Ltd. of which the principal shareholders were Noranda and Northgate, together with 25% being held by the Irish government. The mine was purchased in March 1986 by Outokumpu Oy, a Finnish mining and metallurgical company, and together with the 25% government stake are the current owners. Outokumpu Analysis on Tara Mines Ltd.Upon ownership Outokumpu carried out a comprehensive analysis on the operation and came to the following conclusions :1. Tara had a good orebody;2. Tara had a skilled, capable, stable workforce;3. Tara's concentrator and processing equipment was adequate to meet requirements;4. Tara's mobile equipment fleet was too old and too numerousin numbers; and5. Tara had too many employees, both staff and hourly paid .With ore reserves of approximately 50 million tonnes and at a planned extraction rate of 2.6 million tonnes it meant that the mine had a lifespan of approximately 20 years. To be a viable operation into the future, the mine had to become more efficient. Operating costs and manpower levels had to be dramatically reduced."

This paper analysis the medium and long-term perspectives, framework and considered possibilities of sustainable development of RTB "Bor" (Copper mines in East Serbia) after consolidation in the period of transition. The copper mine was opened in 1903. and today is the best quality copper producer on Balcan. This paper are elaborates the problems of privatization, debt, investment, growth of copper production from own mines (and imported raw), opening of new mines, economical efficiency of production, markets, environmental problems and impacts of the recent industry consolidation. The RTB "Bor" is a serious hot spot in Serbia. Unsustainable trends and processes are identified, as follows: open-pit waste dumps, flotation tailings, mining and processing waste waters, air pollution; no efficiency (excessive) using nonrenewal resource in the copper production; inefficiency in the use of energy, water and other inputs in copper complex; transboundary character of emissions of dust; environmental degradation and quality of wide area and ecologically highly risk, etc. Analysing some trends and planning-developmental perspectives and development strategies of company, it might be assumed that in the forth coming period, in parts of the Serbia, the borders areas of Bulgaria and Romania, there is an anticipated increase of ecological risk.

Mining firms are widely criticised for their adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time many firms in the industry devote extensive resources, both financial and managerial, to the reduction or elimination such impacts. Very considerable improvements have been made, although these are sometimes overshadowed by a few high-profile accidents, such as the occasional collapse of a cyanide-containing tailings dam. In parallel, much effort is also directed at projecting a positive environmental image, as witnessed by extensive environmental reporting, both on paper and increasingly through web-platforms. Mining projects today almost invariably involve some form of environmental protection. In industrial countries regulations in this area are extremely stringent, as is enforcement. In less well developed countries, regulation and enforcement may be weaker, but firms are in many cases and for a number of reasons committing themselves to high levels of environmental protection, even if they might get away without doing so. Research in the area of environmental performance of mining firms has so far paid much attention to concepts such as sustainability indicators and the sustainability of individual firms. Given the still raging debates about the appropriate way to determine the degree to which any given firm is sustainable (Welford 1995) as well as the usefulness of what will in the final analysis be a value judgement, anyone on the sidelines of the debate will come back to the fundamental issue, how is knowledge that a particular firm has been judged ?sustainable? going to be made use of. This issue remains unresolved, which may explain the lack of progress in formulating a useful definition of a sustainable firm The question addressed in this paper is not so much about what firms are doing on the ground or in any particular case of environmental protection, but more in the subsequent use of these efforts - and by extension - on the overall direction of corporate environmental strategy. The fundamental problem facing all mining firms is that they cannot easily benefit from unilaterally reducing their environmental impact. The firm can of course avoid liability and keep a variety of stakeholders happy and hence experience lower costs of obtaining the [input] resources they need (in a broad sense, not just minerals), but this represents only part of the opportunities available form pursuing an environmental strategy (Reinhardt 2000). The other part, which may have an enormous potential, involves the concepts of competitor management and product differentiation. The logic of keeping stakeholders happy has been most forcefully argued by Pfeffer and Salanchick (1978) who link the behaviour of firms in all domains to their ability to obtain the resources they need, at a cost that is lower than it would otherwise be (Pfeffer & Salanccik 1978). Several varieties of strategy can be included under this heading, including cost reduction and risk management. The alternative logic is to convince customers that they want to pay more for minerals supplied by mining firm X or directly attributable to mine Y, or by making all mineral users pay more. These two strategies, which may be referred to as product differentiation and competitor management, respectively (Reinhardt 2000) are related to the demand side of mineral supply, whereas cost reduction and risk management are related to the supply side. "The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.1 km long water-diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, which was excavated by a 14.4 m diameter tunnel boring machine. The excavated rock types included limestone, sandstone, siltstone, shale and mudstone. Based on observations and measurements the overbreak was divided into four zones. Approximately half the tunnel length was excavated through the Queenston Formation, which locally is a shale to mudstone. Three of the four overbreak zones were within the Queenston. Zone 1 includes the formations above the Queenston Formation, Zones 2 and 4 are border regimes with little or no influence from St. Davids Buried Gorge and Zone 3 is the area influenced by the gorge. Zones 2 through 4 can be generally summarized as having overbreak as the result of stress induced spalling. Zone 2 marks the transition from slabbing at the Whirlpool contact in the stress shadow to spalling towards Zone 3. The behaviour of Zone 3 is interrupted from the typical high stress behaviour due to the presence of St. Davids Buried Gorge. As the tunnel passed from the gorge the high regional stresses induce spalling, which creates the typical notch shaped overbreak geometry of Zone 4.Three modelling approaches were used to back analyze the brittle failure process at the NTP: damage initiation and spalling limit, laminated anisotropy modelling, and ubiquitous joint approaches. Analyses were conducted for three tunnel chainages: 3+000, 3+250, and 3+500 m because the overbreak depth increased from 2 to 4 m. All approaches produced similar overbreak geometries to those measured. The laminated anisotropy modelling approach was able to produce overbreak depths and chord closures closest to those measured, using a joint normal to shear stiffness ratio between 1 and 2. The back analysis results were able to produce sets of stress and strength inputs for different sections of the tunnel at the transition from overbreak Zone 3 to 4. The back analysis procedure demonstrates the importance of including the anisotropic stiffness in the numerical modelling approach to correctly capture the overbreak geometry and deformations around underground excavations."

My thanks are due also to our own staff on the Dominion Coal Board, who spared neither time nor effort in helping to prepare this paper.STATISTICS are comparatively dull and, to many people, coal statistics are duller than most. Coal is, however, the one basic mineral upon which our whole way of life depends and it may be well if attention is drawn to this fact by an occasional statistical review of the coal position in Canada. The recent furore over the oil and gas discoveries has so obscured the basic position of coal in many minds that a little basic coal information may be useful. It is for this reason that, for the third successive year, a factual survey of the coal position is being presented.In the previous papers (1) explanations have been given of the basic considerations in the preparation of these reports and some special phases of the overall picture have been examined. "The efficiency of hydrochloric acid (HCl) leaching of gold from low grade gold-bearing material has been investigated in the presence of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) to produce in situ chlorine gas which is an oxidizing agent able to oxidize gold metal to its soluble forms. The effect of concentrations of HCl, NaOCl, and mixtures of HCl + NaOCl was sought. Iron and potassium present in the feed were leached and consumed all the HCl. Gold found as inclusion in pyrite was not exposed to the lixiviant. Therefore, leaching of gold from low grade gold-bearing material in aqueous chlorine solution is not an effective process for now.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgy of gold is commonly based on cyanide leaching solution. Due to the environmental concerns related to cyanidation and mercury processes, and inefficiency of cyanide gold leaching to dissolve refractory ores, sustainable alternative lixiviant systems, capable of generating gold (I) and gold (III) complexes must be studied. Amongst non-cyanide gold lixiviants there is the chloride/chlorine system (Hilson and Monhemius, 2006; Senanayake, 2004; Pilsniak and Trochimczuck, 2007; Wang et al., 2007; Reeves et al., 1999; Khodadad et al., 2008).In practice, the most oxidizing agents utilized for the leaching of gold as chloride, are chlorine (Cl2) or hypochlorite (HOCl) which are either generated in situ by suitable reaction or added in solution (Adamson, 1972). The dissolution of gold concentrate using hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride and sodium hypochlorite (Cl-/HOCl system) were studied (Puvada and Murthy, 2006). The effect of NaOCl and NaCl concentrations were also investigated. The leaching was performed under the following conditions; time: 4h, solid–liquid ratio = 1:4, at room temperature. It was found that the increase of the NaOCl concentration from 25 to 75 g/L did not have any meaningful effect on the recovery of gold which was about 30% (experimental conditions; S/L ratio = 1:4, NaCl concentration: 25 g/L, HCl concentration: 0.35 M). It was also found that from 25 g/L to 200 g/L NaCl, the recovery of gold rose from 30% to 40% (experimental conditions; S/L ratio: 1:4, NaOCl concentration: 25 g/L, HCl concentration: 0.35 M)."

"A precise analysis of the noise emitted by an aluminum plant has shown that one of the main sources of noise is the noise emitted by an exhaust stack 40 m high and 1.8 m diametre, emitting a pure tone at 320 Hz. Because a classical cost effective solution is not available for this source, active noise control (ANC) solution was investigated.Commonly available ANC systems, how-ever, are not applicable to the chimney considered because the diameter of the stack (f) is too important compared to the wave length(?)of the frequency to control. In fact, until now, active noise control (ANC) has been successfully used to reduce the acoustical energy emitted at the end of ducts in the case of plane wave propagation, i.e. ?/f< 1.7 [1,4].When f> ?/1.7, high order modes propagate in the duct and a single canal active noise control system is not sufficient.This paper presents an ANC system developed to control higher modes in a circular duct. The controller used is based on a multiple-input, multiple-output adaptive filtered X-LMS and allows up to 11 error micro-phones and controls sources. The system has been used in a laboratory on a finite duct of3.5 m long and 0.30 m diameter which corresponds to the same ratio ?/f for the real stack. The efficiency of the system with different numbers and location of control sources and errors sensors has been analyzed. Noise reduction of 15 dB(A) could be obtained with some configurations. Actually, the system is being considered for installation on the real chimney stack."

Future nuclear reactor systems such as a sodium-cooled fast reactor are being designed under severe conditions in terms of operating temperature and irradiation fluence compared to current commercial reactors. For realization of such systems, it is necessary to develop an advanced structural material having both high strength and irradiation resistance at high temperatures. Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel is considered as one of the most promising structural material because of its excellent creep and irradiation resistance on the basis of uniformly distributed nano-oxide particles with a high density. Up to now, ODS steels have been intensively studied and developed to apply these materials to the in-core structural component of future nuclear systems. Several advanced ODS steels were designed and fabricated by a mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and hot extrusion processes. This study focuses on the effects of heat treatment parameters during the fabrication process parameters on the microstructures of ODS steels for future nuclear system applications.

The results have been positive with some of the mines showing more than 20% net energy improvement leading to more than 43,000 tonnes per year reduction in CO2 emissions in four of the operations reviewed.

A transparent replica of a casting die was built to achieve a better understanding of the filling mechanisms of aluminum in high pressure die casting. Water and tomato paste were respectively used as analogues for the Newtonian liquid aluminum and the non-Newtonian semi-solid aluminum. The transparent die was installed on an industrial casting press and filling was filmed with a high-speed camera. Differences between the Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids are presented and discussed.
