AS we know, Sir Henry Bessemer introduced Bessemer converting in the steel industry about 1855. It was not until twenty years later that the principles were adopted by non-ferrous metallurgists. In 1880, Manés first produced blister copper from matte in a converter, a very important forward step in copper metallurgy. For thirty years, up to about 1910, bessemerizing of copper matte was carried out in the acid-lined converter. It is not necessary here to enumerate all the shortcomings of that operation, one of which was that it strictly limited the grade of matte that could be treated; a 35 per cent matte was low in those days. From the early days of copper converting, many and repeated attempts were made to use a basic converter lining, and the older metallurgists will remember the numerous reports and discussions in connection with such experiments. These make interesting reading. I quote from a book published in 1900: ?'The siliceous lining is as much a part of the process of copper converting as magnesia lining is in the basic bessemer treatment of phosphoric iron, and it is suicidal to attempt any other kind of lining, either water-jacketed or basic.' "Even if the silica could be introduced in this way (through the tuyeres), it would still produce another trouble in the converter. The small particles of silica, being cold, would combine very imperfectly with the iron oxide and produce granulated and pasty slags, which could not be skimmed or poured out of the vessel".

A brief review of the rapid growth of ACT in Western Canada is presented. It is remarked that this rap-id growth has been accompanied by a heterogeneous approach to design. A more rational and consistent approach is suggested, together with the assumptions on which this approach is based. The operating history of some existing installations is discussed briefly, and conditions necessary for the continued growth of ACT are outlined.

The Snap Lake Diamond Project is located approximately 220 km northeast of Yellowknife, NT, Canada at an approximate latitude of 63?35?. The project location is within the zone of continuous permafrost; measured ground temperatures are about ?2?C at 10 to 20 m depth below surface. The site is located on a peninsula jutting into Snap Lake. The site is generally barren of vegetation, except for some isolated areas with low trees located in topographic lows and near the shoreline of Snap Lake. As part of phased evaluation process with regards to the mining project, an Advanced Exploration Program was undertaken in 2000 and 2001. This program included the underground extraction of a bulk sample of kimberlite, which was processed on site. A Processed Kimberlite Containment (PKC) area was required as part of this program. The area chosen as the PKC facility was a small inland lake, called Inland Lake #1, on the peninsula. Construction of the PKC area required the construction of two dams, one on either end of the lake. At the south end of the lake, Dam 1 was constructed partially on a talik and partially on continuous permafrost. Dam 2 was constructed entirely on permafrost. The effects of the remote location, selection of suitable construction materials and permafrost conditions on the designs of the dams are discussed. A description of the design elements and construction schedule are provided. A review of the performance of these two dams, in terms of settlement, deformations, pore pressures and thermal regime, over the last several years is provided.

"Geochemical stream-sediment reconnaissance can be a useful exploration tool from the point of view of rapidly and cheaply evaluating the mineral potential of an area. This is particularly true of rugged and mountainous areas such as are found in Gaspé. For the past two years, SOQUEM has been carrying out such surveys over favorable geological regions in the Appalachians of northern New Brunswick and Gaspe. To date, about 4,000 square miles of terrain has been systematically covered by reconnaissance geochemistry. Jeeps have been used as a means of transportation in the easily accessible areas and a helicopter equipped with a winch has been used to lower crews into the more difficult-to-reach regions. Such surveys have been successful in finding metallic mineralization which otherwise might not have been detected.Electronic computation of analytical information has been used to construct regional metal maps, rolling mean maps and residual metal maps. These maps have helped in evaluating anomalies, in relating the regional geo-chemistry to the regional geology and in comparing the distribution patterns of metals. To date, some 30,000 stream-sediment samples have been collected from the Gaspe region and analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn and Mn. These analyses are being subjected to computer analysis."

"Basal till sampling techniques were used to search for gold mineralization in the Timmins, Ontario area. During 1978 and 1979, approximately 90 overburden sampling drill holes were completed in Murphy and Hoyle Townships to test specific geophysically defined target areas. A conventional tricone dual tube drill system, and a unique retractable tricone/rock coring system were used to various advantages.First pass till sampling at 800 to 1200 ft intervals perpendicular to ice transport direction yielded anomalous gold values in till and carbonatized quartz pyrite-rich bedrock chips, and lateritic soil. Subsequent induced polarization-resistivity surveys defined the areal extent of a pyritic carbonate alteration zone. A second pass till sampling/limited rock coring program evaluated the gold mineralization potential of the alteration zone. Diamond drilling has substantiated the till and bedrock gold anomalies. Further evaluation of this mineralization is currently in progress. IntroductionThis paper describes an integrated geochemical/geophysical gold mineralization discovery case history in Hoyle Township. This discovery is on a property jointly owned (I983) by Canamax Resources Inc. and Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Exploration of the property began in 1978 by Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. and in 1979 a joint venture agreement was signed with Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. was taken over by Amax Minerals Exploration in 1981, which became Canamax Resources Inc. in 1982.The work described in this paper deals with a gold mineralization discovery located three-quarters of a mile northwest of the gold deposit currently being readied for underground exploration and development. Further drilling is required to investigate the economic potential of the gold mineralization herein described."

Les petit es cheminées contiennent:1 - des diorites et des tonalites (cheminées principale, est et ouest) d'affinité calco-alcaline: Zr 140 ppm, Sr 761 ppm, P2O5 0.31% et (La/Sm)n 3.0;2 - des diorites (cheminée 4) d'affinités tholéiitique: Zr 32 ppm, Sr 181 ppm, P2O5 0.27% et (La/SM)n 1.5.La diorite de la cheminée no 5 contient deux fractions, une de chacune de ces deux affinités. Les dykes tant de porphyre feldspathique quartzifére que ceux de prophyre feldspathique sont d'affinité calco-alcaline: Zr 83 ppm, Sr 500 ppm et P2O5j 0.10%.Le gisement de 10 mine 2 est filonien: veines subhorizontales (""flats "") surtout et veines sub-verticales dans des zones de cisaillement. Le dernier réajustement structural de direction de compression nord-sud a broyé le quartz des veines existant es et rendu possible leur minéralisation. Les veines minéralisées contiennent du quartz, de la tourmaline, de la calcite avec des traces de scheelite, de pyrite et d'or; elles sont bordées par de minces (2 à 20 cm) bordures d'altération où l'on retrouve un enrichissement en carbonate, paragonite, apatite, rutile, saphène et zircon et où les phases ferromagnésiennes sont disparues. On a documenté le migrations géochimiques suivantes:I - de la bordure d'altération vers l'éponte, K2O, Rb et MgO;2 - de l'éponte vers la bordure d'altération, Na2O;3 - de l'éponte vers la veine, SiO2.P2O5, TiO2, Zr, Y, Nb et CaO sont enrichis dans la bordure d'altération."

The presence of ?ne-grained mineral intergrowths, the complex distribution of deleterious minor elements, and the variable base-metal contents in some assemblages commonly pose technical problems for the processing of volcanogenic massive sul?de ores. The bene?ciation of most massive sul?de ores from the Iberian Pyrite Belt requires extremely ?ne grinding to liberation sizes of K80= 15 µm to 25 µm. For several deposits, mapping of the ore types and metal zoning pat-terns has shown that the different ore types are distributed as ore lenses within the massive sul?des. Mineralogical, textural, and metallogenetic studies have provided an understanding of the distribution of both the vertical and the horizontal metal zonation in the orebodies. Because the ef?ciency of ore processing is affected by ore textures, and because the same mineral commonly has different textures and varies in chemical composition, a relationship between textures of the feed and the middlings must be established for all ore types de?ned at the deposit scale. "Introduction The Luscar company, Forestburg Collieries Ltd., operates the Diplomat Mine located 14 km south of Forestburg, Alberta. Production is now at a declining rate from the 1 million tonnes achieved in 1978 as the reserves are being depleted. Three pits are operated at this prairie strip mine utilizing draglines and stripping shovels to uncover the coal. The coal is hauled to a tipple on site for shipment by rail or highway vehicles or is hauled directly to the adjacent Battle River Generating Station. Geology The mine is currently extracting the Battle River seam on the north side of the Battle River. This is the lower-most seam in the Horseshoe Canyon Formation and is the only one present in the area, the upper seams having been eroded by glaciation. The seam lies generally flat and varies from 2.0 to 5.0 metres thick. It lies under glacial till overburden varying in depth from 5.0 to 12.0 metres. The mineable coal extends from the side of the Battle River valley where it outcrops, to approximately 2.5 kilometres to the north. The mine is spread out over a distance of 8.0 kilometres in an east-west direction. Reserves and Coal Quality After over 30 years of mining at Diplomat, there are now less than 1 million tonnes of mineable reserves remaining on the property. With the commencement of coal production from the Paintearth Mine in 1981, supply to the Battle River Generating Station, formerly Diplomat's biggest customer, is being transferred to Paintearth. Rail shipments and domestic supply will continue until reserves are depleted. The coal has the following specifications:"

An account of a new method of investigating the electrical .properties J the earth's crust is presented. The method, called AFMAG, employs, as a source, natural alternating magnetic fields of audio and sub-audio frequencies. Measurements of the distortion of these fields caused by geological features are made with the aid of search coil detectors at several discrete frequencies. Many results of field surveys made with the method are presented and they illustrate its advantages and limitations when applied to the search for massive sulphide mineralization. The advantages far outweigh the limitations and in fact indicate that a major breakthrough in geophysical exploration technique and instrumentation has been made.

"The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units."

"Dust control is an increasingly important consideration for all mining operations from a health, safety, environmental and maintenance perspective. Modern mining operations incorporate a variety of mechanical dust control techniques into design however in many cases these engineered systems are unable to meet desired fugitive dust level targets. In these cases a variety of chemical dust suppression options are available to operators to assist in meeting their targets. This paper provides an overview of available chemistries, discussion of application techniques and equipment requirements and available performance monitoring technologies. This paper will also include a number of case histories discussing the treatment approach chosen, challenges encountered, chemical feed, storage and application equipment, monitoring techniques employed and results achieved.INTRODUCTIONDust FundamentalsFugitive dust by definition is an aerosol consisting of particulate matter suspended in a gaseous medium. Aerosols can include suspensions of particulate (solids) or sprays (liquids) or a mixture of both. Of particular concern from an occupational health and safety perspective are aerosols of particulate matter due to their involvement in classical occupations lung diseases such as silicosis, poisoning through chronic exposure to compounds such as lead and beryllium and expected involvement in more modern identified conditions such as cancer, asthma, and a host of other respiratory and non-respiratory conditions which may be caused or influenced through exposure to dust.According to the ""Glossary of Atmospheric Chemistry Terms"" (IUPAC, 1990), ""Dust: Small, dry, solid particles projected into the air by natural forces, such as wind, volcanic eruption, and by mechanical or man-made processes such as crushing, grinding, milling, drilling, demolition, shoveling, conveying, screening, bagging, and sweeping. Dust particles are usually in the size range from about 1 to 100 µm in diameter, and they settle slowly under the influence of gravity."" It should be noted that the behavior of particulates with respect to settling rate in air is a function of particle mass and shape and therefore the geometric size of the particle can be misleading. Occupational hygienists utilize the concept of particle aerodynamic diameter as a more representative reflection of particle size. Particle aerodynamic diameter, is defined as ""the diameter of a hypothetical sphere of density 1 g/cm3 having the same terminal settling velocity in calm air as the particle in question, regardless of its geometric size, shape and true density."" The expression of particle size as aerodynamic diameter allows for a more consistent understanding of particle behavior both from a settling perspective as well as from the perspective of how dust particles will behave in the respiratory tract. Figure 1 illustrates settling rates for particles of various aerodynamic diameters. The relationship between particle size and settling rate is important for understanding what size of particles must be addressed by dust control strategies as well as what particle sizes represent the most danger from an exposure and occupational health perspective."

The concept of sustainable development has been evolved into a working framework for sustainable manufacturing, in which the environmental requirements are introduced into product development at the design stage. This keynote paper is discussing a number of issues pertaining to the impact of manufacturing on the environment. The conflicting requirements of sustainable development, sustainable manufacturing (SM) and economical growth are presented in the light of successful case studies that were able to convert conflicts into opportunities. Integration of SM into the product life cycle is also presented. A number of concepts that are related to Ecoefficiency, e.g., inverse manufacturing, demanufacturing and re-manufacturing are also discussed. The paper underlines the fact that the positive impact of this new philosophy is equally applicable and beneficial to both; developed and developing countries. The paper concludes with an overview of Global trends in environmentally benign manufacturing (EBM); e.g., product-take back and emerging material and processing technologies. The state-of-the-art approach to Life Cycle Impact Assessment and integration of design for the environment DfE principles are demonstrated through some case study.

"This paper studies the characterization and dissolution of a Nigerian pyrolusite ore, reporting the results of ore physicochemical analyses and detailed ore characterization before and after leaching at optimal conditions. Ore dissolution rate increased proportional to acid concentration and temperature, but decreased with ore particle size. In a 4 M H2SO4 solution at 80°C with a particle size of –90+75 µm and moderate agitation, ore dissolution rate reached 78.7%. Unleached residue produced under optimal leaching conditions consisted of silica with admixtures of cristobalite and stishovite. The calculated activation energy supported the proposed diffusion control mechanism for the process.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article étudie la caractérisation et la dissolution d’un minerai de pyrolusite du Nigeria, il donne les résultats des analyses physicochimiques du minerai et de la caractérisation détaillée du minerai avant et après la lixiviation sous des conditions optimales. Le taux de dissolution du minerai augmentait proportionnellement à la concentration de l’acide mais décroissait avec la taille des particules. Dans une solution 4 M H2SO4 à 80 °C, avec une granulométrie de –90+75 µm et une agitation modérée, le taux de dissolution du minerai a atteint 78,7 %. Les résidus produits sous des conditions optimales de lixiviation étaient constitués de silice avec un mélange de cristobalite et de stishovite. During heap leaching of secondary copper sulphide ores operated at low heap temperatures and high levels of leach solution salinity, copper recovery is usually unsatisfactory, due to a slow chemical and bacteriological leaching of the covellite minerals either formed from leaching of chalcocite or naturally occurring in ores. A laboratory test program was conducted to investigate the effect of leach solution temperature in the range of 20 to 50°C on copper extraction during stirred reactor, bottle roll, and short column leaching of fresh or heap leached secondary copper sulphide ores. It was demonstrated that increasing heap temperature is an effective approach for improving recovery of copper from secondary copper sulphide ores. A review of the technologies available for heating heap leach solution or decreasing solution salinity to improve copper recovery from secondary sulphide ore indicates that an integration of copper concentrate pressure leaching with heap leaching is potentially a cost-effective approach. A copper flotation concentrate sample was tested through pressure oxidation with the use of heap leach solutions of varying strengths for the repulping of the concentrate in order to examine its effect on pressure oxidation performance. The test results indicate that use of heap leach solution of high salinity in the pressure oxidation process does not cause a negative impact on the process performance for copper extraction, sulphide oxidation, and recovery of gold (if present) from pressure leach residue, and has additional advantages of removing the bacterially inhibitory aluminum from heap leach solution and generating more acid and ferric iron in the pregnant leach solution. A flowsheet configuration for full integration of the copper concentrate pressure oxidation with heap leaching of secondary copper sulphide ore is proposed and discussed.

La méthode d?exploitation traditionnelle de la mine est le chantier chambre-magasin. Cependant, lors de l?exploitation d?un chantier, nous avons été confrontés à un problème de soutirage. Le minerai abattu est resté accroché à l?intérieur du chantier ce qui nous obligea à soutirer environ 200 wagons, représentant 700 tonnes. Suite à l?ampleur de la situation, nous avons décidé de finir l?exploitation du chantier par la méthode sous-niveau long trou retraité. Cette première expérience de récupération de piliers ayant été réalisée avec succès, nous avons décidé de continuer avec deux autres récupérations de piliers afin de pouvoir augmenter notre expertise autant au niveau technique qu?au niveau économique.

"Cameco Corporation is operator of the world's richest uranium project, the Key Lake mine/mill complex, located within the Athabasca region of Northern Saskatchewan. Mineable resources from the Key Lake ore bodies with an average U,08 content of 2.5% will be exhausted by the year 2000 and open pit mining at Key Lake will be phased out at that time. The mill will continue to operate at increased capacity, using high grade ore from the McArthur River project, a new underground mine at a distance of about 80 km from the Key Lake site. The McArthur River ore with an average U308 content of about 15 % will be blended with separately stockpiled low grade materials from Key Lake with a U,08 content of about 0.1 %. The average (blended) mill feed grade will be about 4%, similar to peak concentrations found in Key Lake ore.The Key Lake ore tailings are presently being placed in the mined out Deilmann pit under sub-aerial conditions, using spigots and a highly efficient pit/tailings drainage system. The tailings resulting from the processing of the blended McArthur River ore will be deposited on top of the Key Lake ore tailings under sub-aqueous conditions. This staged approach shows distinct technical and environmental advantages over an alternative, fully sub-aerial in-pit deposition scheme.The first part of this paper presents an overview of site specific geotechnical and hydrogeological features found at Key Lake and details some of the extensive test and modelling work that was required for environmental impact predictions during the development phase of the facility. The second part of this paper deals with tailings modifications, innovative placement technologies and drainage methods that have been (and will be) employed at the Deilmann Tailings Management Facility {TMF) to produce a highly consolidated tailings body under non-buoyancy conditions. The application of this technology at Key Lake is expected to produce a tailings ""plug"" in the Deilmann TMF which will have a permeability similar to or lower than the original in-situ Deilmann ore, resulting in a minimization of contaminant mass loadings to the environment both during operation and after decommissioning."

"The objective of this research is to evaluate the magnitude of carbon prices required to drive process development and innovation for the global nickel industry in a direction that tackles the multifaceted sustainability challenges that the industry faces, including air pollution reduction and greenhouse gas abatement. The results suggest that the currently considered carbon prices are not sufficient to drive innovations in processing methods or upstream pollution prevention. The co-benefits of climate change mitigation and pollution prevention cannot be readily realized under climate change policy alone. Increased coordination between climate change policy and performance-based environmental legislation is necessary. INTRODUCTIONNickel is an important metal in our modern society as it is used in stainless steel, alloys, electroplating and rechargeable batteries, all of which are integral to our economic growth and development (Eckelman, 2010).However, nickel production is energy intensive and therefore susceptible to emerging climate change policies, which may lead to production curtailment and/or increased unit costs of production unless changes in efficiency or energy sources are made (Mudd, 2010). The industry is faced with multi-faceted constraints: future technology must not only deal with metallurgical, financial and environmental constraints but also promote low energy and low carbon practices. This presents a challenge for this industry where technology innovation, development and commercialization are often lengthy, risky and costly processes (Imrie, 2006).Climate change is one of the many challenges faced by our society. Others include other pollution to air, water and land, resources shortage and economic development. From a policy perspective, it is important to balance multiple and often competing needs in an integrated manner. It would require some levels of trade-off in order to maximize the overall effectiveness but also to ensure that one policy does not undermine other policy objectives.The aims of this study are to evaluate how developments in climate change policy would affect the nickel industry in the context of existing environmental regulations and how the industry could respond under these constraints."

The Duparquet mining camp situated along the Quebec segment of the Porcupine-Destor Fault was the site of gold exploitation from 1933 to 1956 and 1988 to 1991. Numerous gold showings and deposits straddle the fault. An ongoing regional metallogenic study by the Quebec Geological Survey has identified five main types of gold mineralization, each showing a distinct style, alteration, control, metal content, and timing. In order to maximise the impact of this study, a 3D regional common-earth-model was constructed along a critical segment of the Porcupine-Destor Fault with the gOcad® technology. The realisation of this model required the maximum use of the public SIGEOM numerical database, as well as the recovery of significant private data from exploration company partners. The 3D model is also a powerful new dynamic exploration tool, which can be queried using geological criteria characteristic of the different gold deposit types. This 3D model can be modified and improved continuously by adding data from new drilling, mapping or geophysical surveys. The case of the Porcupine-Destor Fault illustrates the importance of 3D common-earth-modelling in delivering refined technological geological syntheses likely to attract significant investments from the mining exploration industry, especially for deep exploration programs within mature mining camps.
