Introduction Between 1903 and 1905, W. Mclnnis, of the Geological Survey of Canada, made a micrometer traverse of the Kawinogans (Crow) river from Kapkichegimaga lake to its junction with the Otoskwin river. He reported that a belt of Keewatin rocks, 1 to 4 miles wide, was exposed along the course of the river for 17 miles east of Kapkichegimaga lake. Prospectors and exploration companies paid little attention to the mineral possibilities of this belt until the summer of 1928 when, with the adoption of airplane transportation, the area became readily accessible. Within a short time widespread interest was aroused by the announcement of attractive finds, and a mild rush followed. During the winter months, hundreds of claims were staked on either side of Crow river for 12 miles east of Pickle lake. In the summer of 1929, much of this ground was systematically explored and a considerable amount of development work was done on the known deposits.

For many years, it has been known that certain loud noises may, with prolonged exposure, temporarily or permanently damage a person's hearing ability. Pneumatic rock drills, al-though among the offenders, have, until recently, remained unaltered and unrestricted as to noise output. Now, there are drills available with higher rates of penetration and yet with noise levels reduced to those of previous models or less. Use of such drills, when proved to be superior in noise attenuation and of acceptable performance, should be encouraged in order to reduce future hearing losses to a minimum. People Have the Right to Hear P ERHAPS the earliest recognized indication of hearing loss due to industrial noise was the deaf-ness developed by the workmen in boiler factories. Here, the vibration set up in the shells by the riveting hammers gradually deteriorated the workmen's hearing, especially those whose job it was to hold the dollies inside the drum, where the sound is greatly intensified by reflection

INTRODUCTION THE deleterious effect of stress raisers or notches on the resistance to fatigue of machine components, and other parts subjected to repeated dynamic loading, has been well known for many years. Most engineers in the mechanical field have, at one time or another, encountered a shaft which fractured due to a poor transition fillet, a holding-down bolt which failed due to insufficient tightening or inferior thread form, or a fitted member which broke through a combination of fretting corrosion and clamping stresses. All of these are examples of the damaging influence exerted by stress raisers in fatigue. Other common forms of stress raiser which have taken their toll of dynamic components are: keyways, oil holes, splines, quenching oil grinding cracks, tool marks, and sharp changes in section; some are the result of the design, others of poor execution of the design. It is our experience in the Mines Branch1 and I feel sure this will be corroborated by other fatigue investigators, that the majority of failures are due to incorrect design or faulty preparation of the part concerned, rather than to the use of inferior material. Quite frequently, it is true that the operating conditions necessitate the presence of a 'notch', but even in such cases methods are generally available by which its adverse effect on the life of the component can be reduced or annulled. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a few typical stress raisers, and to provide information on various processes for mitigating their effects in fatigue.

Hydraulic hoisting offers a number ~f attractive features over conventional hoisting methods: small shaft space requirements; great flexibility of layout, including pick-up or delivery of the material at points distant from the mine shaft; low investment and operating costs. However, limited practical experience with this type of hoisting dictates that careful design and, frequently, extensive testing be done by competent engineers before large-scale installations are built. This paper covers the following: basic laws and design criteria for hydraulic hoisting installations; a description of a coal hoisting installation which has been in industrial operation since 1960, with a vertical lift of 600 feet and an annual capacity of 500,000 tons of -3 ~-in. coal; and a tentative appraisal of the process, including cost estimates. "Pre-oxidation and cyanide leaching behavior of gold in the presence of sulfide minerals were reviewed, focused on the effects of oxygen injection in the gold leaching process. Generally, pre-oxidation and gold leaching kinetics from iron sulfide refractory minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, pentlandite and arsenopyrite, can be enhanced with higher dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. However, most of copper sulfide minerals dissolved well both in water and cyanide solutions, and copper from the minerals consumed DO and cyanide to oxidize and leach. Only in the presence of chalcopyrite, gold leaching was effectively occurred with increasing DO. However, chalcocite and covellite severely retarded gold leaching. Stibnite, an antimony mineral, formed a passive film on the gold surface under any DO conditions, and it slowed gold leaching. This impeding effect can be alleviated by leaching at low pH or adding lead salt. Using oxygen and lead together can make synergistic effect in oxidation of sulfide minerals and can enhance gold extraction. Depending on the mineralogical characteristics of the ore, the optimum DO and lead concentrations can be optimized. However, lead can cause environmental problems, and so its dosage should be minimized or eliminated by substituting it with oxygen injection.INTRODUCTIONGold ores containing sulfide minerals are becoming more significant as high grade gold oxide deposits are continuously becoming difficult to find. In light of this situation, to produce more gold, recovery methods from refractory gold ore containing various sulfide minerals should be investigated. Generally, sulfide minerals have impeding effects on gold leaching: formation of a passive film on the gold surface, high consumption of chemicalssuch as cyanide and oxygenduring leaching, reduction of gold cyanide by sulfide ions, etc. (Senanayake, 2008). Therefore, sulfides must be properly treated for better gold recovery. Pre-oxidation of sulfide minerals by injecting pure oxygen can decrease the impeding effects in gold leaching. Prior to cyanidation, sulfide minerals can be oxidized to metal hydroxide and sulfate form, which consume negligible cyanide in the following cyanidation circuit (Bodnaras et al., 1993). Moreover, gold cyanidation can be enhanced by increasing concentration of the dissolved oxygen (DO). In general, the optimum concentration ratio of [CN-]/[O2] is calculated as 6, but it goes higher in the real system (Marsden &House, 2006), which means that the reaction is typically controlled by DO concentration."

Different management options and rehabilitation strategies are available for mine wastes that produce acid mine drainage (AMD). One of them consists in building a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) on the tailings to limit the availability of oxygen, an essential component of the chemical reactions leading to the generation of AMD. Prior to cover construction, a monitoring strategy must be established to evaluate the response and performance of the cover system. The key parameters to monitor should include matric suction and volumetric water content in the CCBE, oxygen flux (and/or oxygen concentration) through and below the cover, and the main meteorological parameters for the impoundment. In this paper, different techniques available to measure the targeted parameters are described and their main properties are given. Recommendations (based on existing cases) on the location and the number of monitoring stations and on the measurement frequency for each monitored parameter are also proposed.

However, the wide geographical distribution of the research centres has made it difficult for the individual research workers to meet together and to exchange ideas or even to learn what projects .are being investigated or the nature and extent of the facilities available for work of this kind.The purpose of the present symposium is to assemble data relating to projects under investigation and the facilities employed at the various metallurgical research laboratories in Canada, thus providing some measure of correlation so that workers in different locations may learn what kind of work •is being .done at other points throughout the country.In reporting the symposium it has not been possible to reproduce the papers in full, but excerpts have been selected that give the essentia1 data."

Close monitoring of performance at each process stage, from raw material through to finished product, is vital for operational consistency and the production of high quality steel. However, many of the integrated iron and steelmaking process route stages operate under such severe conditions of temperature, dust, water, thermal radiation, vibration, pressure, vacuum, extreme dynamic events, high material flows, corrosion, erosion, electrical-noise, electromagnetic-noise, or audio-noise that, in general, it is a very difficult challenge to obtain useful information for control. Thus, state-of-the-art non-contact and remote sensors are applied to help monitor and control specific process operations. Often, these sensor systems have been developed especially for the steel industry and they are based on four principal technologies: Laser, Microwave, Electro-Magnetics and Thermal Imaging with supporting technologies such as: X-ray Fluorescence, Audiometry, Digital Image Processing, Radio Telemetry, GPS and many others. These advanced sensor technologies are reviewed with respect to their application at various stages along the integrated process route.

The lower and the upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation, Hubei Province, China, contain silicate-type K-rich beds (illite and feldspar), and intraclastic phosphorites, as well as Ag-V and V deposits in a "Black Shale Series". The K-rich beds fonned in an anoxic basin whereas the phosphorites fonned in a more oxic and higher energy depositional environment. The Black Shale Series occurs in the lower and upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation; that in the upper part consists of black illite shale and dark gray dolostone, and contains Se-rich Ag and V deposits. These deposits are of more industrial significance than the previously discovered Ni-Mo polyelement sulfide deposits which occur in the Lower Cambrian Black Shales Series of South China. Studies of lithotype, sedimentary sequence, and geochemistry of the Doushantuo Fonnation have led to more attention being focused on the uppennost Black Shale Series and its Ag-V and V deposits. There are three ore types: black, Ag-V-rich, illite shale; black, V-rich, illite shale; and dark gray, Ag-Vrich, fmely crystalline dolostone. The first two ore types contain 3070 to 5% Corg and the last, 1.25%. The Ag-bearing minerals are naumannite, argyrodite, aguilarite, acanthite, and native silver that occur as inclusions in pyrite associated with barite. Vanadium substitutes for AI in illite and is also related to organic-matter contents. Because (1) the pre-Sinian Kongling Group contains one to three times greater than the Clark Ag value; (2) black, illite shale has a negative Ce anomaly; and (3) there are large occurrences of black, K-rich, tuffaceous, fme siltstone, the sources of Ag are thought to include subaerial and submarine volcanic materials. It is proposed that Ag, V, and Se were absorbed by clay particles and organic matter during syngenetic deposition in an anoxic environment; Ag subsequently was reconcentrated into sulfides and selenides, whereas V was incorporated structurally into illite during early and late diagenesis. These types of Black Shale Series-hosted Ag-V and V deposits are, therefore, considered to be sedimentary-diagenetic in origin.

With head office in Vancouver, it is involved, directly or through subsidiary or associated companies, in Canada and in the United States, Greenland, Europe, Australia, India and Japan.Cominco has over 12,000 employees and 26,000 shareholders, with 91% of all shares held in Canada.Cominco's Inventory Control System is one of the most extensively used computer systems employed by the company. Also, inventory control is regarded as one of the most economically successful computer applications to be undertaken by the Data Processing Services (D.P.S) Group that was responsible for the development of the Inventory Control System.The main use of automatic inventory control has been at operating plants in Western Canada and the Northwest Territories, which are separated by large distances. Each location has equipment-intensive mining and processing operations and it is essential to maintain control of parts and supplies inventories. Some of these locations are remote from urban and industrial centres and it is important to avoid the adverse effects of high personnel costs and re-training due to turnover."

In April, 1961, a large pillar was removed by blasthole mining methods at Inco's Murray mine. More than half a million pounds of explosives were used to break 2,120,000 tons of ore in a single underground blast. The 5, 10 2-inch boreholes, involving 435,815 feet of drilling, were loaded over a three-week period, using conventional explosives and short-period electric caps. From this blast, more than half a million tons of ore have been removed to date (April, 1962) through slusher trenches situated in the footwall of the ore body. T HE Ontario Division of The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, operates six underground mines and two open pits in the Sudbury district in the north-central part of the Province. This paper describes the removal of a large pillar at the Murray mine (Figure 1), where 2,120,000 tons of ore were broken in a single underground blast by the blasthole mining method. This is the largest underground blast achieved to date (April, 1962) at Inco mines.

In order to successfully produce columbium pyrochlore concentrates, St. Lawrence Columbium and Metals Corporation had to face two principal problems met in several new operations but possibly made more acute than usual owing to the newness of the project. 1.-The ore is particularly complex, as it is made up of an elaborate intermingling of carbonates and discontinuous ultra-alkaline rock bodies of various ages and types in which no less than seventy mineral have been re-ported. Obvious petrographic or structural controls are lacking. Ore boundaries have to be defined on the basis of assay results and the determination of several minerals which occur in trace amounts. 2.-The pyrochlore concentrates produced had to com-ply with a set of stringent specifications. This fact, combined with the low Cb205 content of the ore, necessitated the use of a beneficiation process that would have to operate at a concentration ratio greater than 100:1. A brief description of the mill circuit is given. Mill stability was obtained through extensive mineralogical study of the mill feed coupled with close geological and engineering control of the mining operations.

Electrolytic reduction followed by the addition of sulfuric acid and the application of heat can be used to selectively crystallize uranous sulfate from solution. This approach, when coupled with downstream thermal decomposition, forms the basis of a process for primary uranium recovery and purification where much of the sulfuric acid value can be recovered and recycled. In this process, a purified uranium (VI) leach solution is first electrolytically reduced to uranium (IV) in a membrane electrolysis cell. Sulfuric acid is then added to the solution which, in conjunction with the input of heat, causes the crystallization of uranous sulfate tetrahydrate. The precipitate is then dried and thermally decomposed to U3O8, which releases a mixture of high-purity SO2, SO3, oxygen, and water vapour. This gas can be recovered as sulfuric acid in an existing acid plant, processed through a new wet sulfuric acid process, or absorbed directly into the upstream electrolyte as a substitute for fresh acid in the crystallization step. This process has been shown to be practical, efficient, and cost-effective on the laboratory scale, and could be practiced on the industrial scale using commercially available equipment. This paper focuses on the thermal decomposition process and options for acid recovery.

"SGS Minerals commissioned an internal R&D program to develop in-house expertise to design, set up and operate REE separation pilot campaigns at its Lakefield, Canada site. A team approach was used that included expert consultants in the field of REE separation as well as in-house expertise supported by the on-site Analytical Laboratories.A mini pilot scale SX circuit was designed and constructed consisting of several modular banks of 30 stages each. About 80 stages of mixer-settlers were used to separate Pr and Nd from La and Ce contained in a synthetic REE chloride stream simulating the raffinate from an initial La-Nd|Sm-Lu+Y separation.Two pilot campaigns were operated totalling 25 days of 24/7 operation with 99.4% plant availability in the final 20 day campaign. Purities of > 99.9% in the Pr-Nd strip liquor and > 99% in the La- Ce raffinate were achieved and simultaneously sustained in the second campaign for prolonged operating periods. Key to controlling and adjusting the circuit was the rapid assay turnaround (as low as 2 hours) provided by the on-site SGS analytical lab. This permitted the operating team to modify conditions and observe the effect of changes relatively quickly considering the large number of stages. A portable XRF analyser was also used to track evolving assay trends in the circuit. The small physical size of the circuit enabled longer operation with a limited amount of sample.This paper discusses the design of the circuit, operating conditions, some of the key operating factors and controls and results obtained.INTRODUCTIONSGS Minerals commissioned the design of and built a solvent extraction (SX) pilot plant for the separation of rare earth elements (REE). The plant consists of a battery of 120 mixer-settlers set up in a dedicated piloting facility.The purpose of the programme was to develop capabilities and in-house expertise in REE SX separation technology. The program aimed to establish operating procedures, sampling regimes, and analytical methodologies and protocols for this type of process/plant. A team comprised of SGS personnel and several external consultants with prior industrial and REE separation piloting experience was assembled to achieve these objectives."

"IntroductionFLUORSPAR has been found at several •localities in Newfoundland, but all the commercial deposits discovered to date are in the vicinity of St. Lawrence, a town on the southeast coast. Most of the veins are within six miles of St. Lawrence harbour, and between sea-level and an altitude of 400 feet. The St. Lawrence Corporation of Newfoundland, Limited, and Newfoundland Fluorspar, Limited, a subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of Canada. Limited. are the two producers.With the arrival of 1953, the St. Lawrence area entered upon its twenty-second •consecutive year as a producer of fluorspar. Production has increased more or less steadily during this period, as is shown by the fact that approximately one-half of the total shipments to date have been made during the past six years. Between four and five hundred men are employed by the industry, and more than $1,250,000 was paid out in wages and salaries during 1952. Shipments during that year reached an all-time high of 81,283 tons valued at $2,484,943, compared with 67,925 tons valued at $1,966,477 in 1951 (1).As a result of an agreement made in July, 1952, with the United States Defence Materials Procurement Agency, production of the St. Lawrence Corporation, Limited, and St. Lawrence Fluorspar, Incorporated, an affiliated company, will •be increased by .approximately 50,000 tons of acid-grade fluorspar per year. The contract extends over a period of four years, or until 150,000 tons of acid-grade concentrates have been produced."

The effects of the injection of dry limestone additives into boilers for the sorption of sulphur dioxide have been studied in pilot and full-scale systems. The effects of such injections on boiler mass particulate emissions as well as collectability characteristics of the fly ash and reaction products are presented. Implications of the effects on the design and economics of particulate collectors, in particular electrostatic precipitators, are discussed.
