"Vale’s Ontario Operations re-introduced Cu/Ni separation at Clarabelle Mill in 2006. The mill processes ores from a number of mines in the Sudbury basin. A saleable Cu concentrate is produced at 30-60% Cu recovery from mill feed, which has to meet the quality specification. In particular, Ni content in Cu concentrate must be less than 0.6%, otherwise, penalties will apply and diminish the value of Cu concentrate, in addition to the lost Ni value. Generally, a Ni grade of less than 0.4% is obtained in Cu concentrate. More recently, while processing Cu-rich ore, Cu concentrate contained more than 0.6% Ni which is abnormally high. Detailed mineralogical investigation shows that Cu-rich ore contains more millerite in comparison to typical Sudbury Ni sulphide ore. Millerite is found to be more floatable than pentlandite and is much more difficult to depress using high-lime aeration conditioning, which is the standard practice in Cu/Ni separation to float chalcopyrite while depressing pentlandite. The current operation uses sodium cyanide at 20 g/t to depress pentlandite and pyrrhotite. However, it is found that a high dosage is required to depress millerite. It is also shown that starch and dextrin are promising in millerite depression.INTRODUCTIONPrior to bulk smelting in 1991, Cu/Ni separation was carried out at Vale’s Copper Cliff Mill, Ontario Operation. The typical Cu concentrate grade was around 30% Cu and 1% Ni. This is very high in comparison to today’s value of 0.4% Ni and would not be acceptable for external processing. However, the Cu concentrate was processed internally at the Copper Cliff smelter/refinery, so the Ni contained in Cu concentrate was not lost and no actual penalties applied. During the SO2 abatement initiative, bulk smelting was chosen because of the perceived simplicity and consequently, Cu/Ni separation was eliminated (Agar, 1991) and the Copper Cliff mill was subsequently demolished. In 2005 and after more than one decade of bulk smelting, business changes required the removal of some Cu concentrate from Clarabelle Mill bulk concentrate to provide smelter capacity for Voisey’s Bay concentrate in the Copper Cliff smelter. In essence, this strategy calls for Cu removal at Clarabelle Mill (Lawson, 2006). In this case, Cu concentrate is sold externally and it must meet the quality requirement of less than 0.6% Ni."

ABSTRACT: The Kupol project, located in Far East Russia, treats a high-grade, free-milling ore containing 25.5 g/t Au, 298.3 g/t Ag, and 0.5% pyrite,with a P70of 53 microns. Most of the gold occurs as elec-trum and the silver is predominantly present in the forms of acanthite, stephanite, pyrargyrite, andproustite. The mill reached the design throughput of 3,000 tpd six months after start-up. AKnelson con-centratorrecovers10.4% gold and 0.5% silver. Leaching (14.5 hours pre-treatment and 116 hours cyanidation)of gravity tailings is performed with the CANMET Enhanced Leach Process (CELP),using only 490 ppm NaCN (cyanide consumption of 1.1 kg/t). The precious metals are recovered by counter-current decantation and the Merrill-Crowe process. Calcium hypochlorite destroyscyanide and thiocyanate. Overall, gold and silver recoveries for 2008 were 95.4% and 85.6%,respectively (2.8% and7.5% higher than targets). In the first eight months of 2009, gold and silver recoveries were 95.0% and82.6%, respectively. By August 2009, the mill processed 1.42 million tons of ore with production of 1.1 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver. CELP performance was not affected by changes in feed grade and ore mineralogy. Additional modifications to the leaching strategy allowed further reduction in cyanide consumption and effluent treatment costs.

There is a long history of coal production in Turkey with electric energy generated from power plants since the 1950s. However, the cost of power generation is high. Therefore, it has become necessary to find a means of decreasing production costs to become more competitive in a global market. This paper attempts to economically minimize the overall operating costs of a dragline-shovel-truck system applied at an open pit mine that has fed the Yatagan power plant since 1979, lowering the lignite production cost, and indirectly, the overall electricity generation unit cost. Systems currently in place, as a result of former optimization studies, are time-consuming and expensive to re-implement to comply with today’s very different geometric and economic conditions affecting mining operations. In such cases, rather than re-optimization, it is more viable to identify the parameters that affect the minimum unit cost, via a cost minimization study, allowing present mine equipment to be utilized more efficiently. Unit cost minimization analyses are subject to the capacity of the pool of mining equipment available, combined with the mining block geometry from pre-stripping onwards. In this overall unit cost minimization study, P&H shovels and CAT 777 trucks with capacities of 15 yd3 and 77 tons, respectively, were used in truck-shovel pre-stripping operations. A 65 yd3 Marion 8050 dragline was used to expose the overburden immediately over the coal seam. Pre-stripping bench heights varied from 8 m to 20 m and dragline bench heights from 20 m and 25 m were evaluated to minimize the unit cost of field operations. Total overburden extended to a depth of 60 m (35 m to 40 m for pre-stripping). Minimization analyses performed on the pre-stripping truck-shovel operation, prior to dragline operations, determined that the shovel bench height should be 15 m requiring a dragline bench height of 25 m.

"A practical new test has been developed for SAG hardness determination. Using two kilogram samples of minus one inch diamond drill core or crushed muck samples, the Starkey SAG Test has been shown to give accurate predictive information which directly relates to on-stream SAG mill performance. Typical results and test criteria are discussed in the paperAchievements to date include:• Identification of hardness profiles and the location of hard and soft zones in a large ore body.• Accurate prediction of the hardness of a bulk sample by using an adjacent diamond drill hole.• Derivation of a plotted curve relating pilot plant power to laboratory relative hardness.• Demonstration that for every test done to date, the Starkey SAG Test produced a product size distribution identical to that produced in a pilot plant or full scale plant SAG operation.This test can now be used for blast hardness monitoring and short term control of mine production in existing plants and for identifying the proper locations for bulk samples in new projects. In addition, new SAG mill design can now be rationalized in a low cost way to eliminate unforeseen production shortfalls.IntroductionThis paper is presented to introduce the Starkey SAG Test, a practical new laboratory tool for measuring the relative hardness of small ore samples in a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) environment. The test was first designed for use on diamond drill core samples during the prefeasibility stage of new mining projects, to provide new information about the ore body at reasonable cost. It is a new tool and does not replace existing pilot plant test requirements.The test will also be useful for throughput prediction in existing SAG plants by assisting in short and long term mine planning, where forecasting of metal grades and milled tonnage is used to control mine profitability. "The paper discusses the approach used to add a new, separate 5000 t/d copper-zinc treatment circuit to an existing, 1650 t/d copper circuit, essentially within the existing mill building. Temporary installation of new equipment allowed renovation and expansion within existing operating areas. Production in the original circuit was maintained at rated capacity throuqh0ut the construction period through close co-ordination between operating and construction groups. Downtime for circuit and service tie-ins was minimal. "INTRODUCTIONA beneficiation plant to upgrade earthy iron ores is being installed by the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Sept-Iles, Quebec.The crude ore for the plant will come from the Knob Lake area, located in Northern Quebec, where mining has been in progress since 1954.Some 170 million tons of ""direct 11 ores have been mined and shipped in the past eighteen years, with an overall silica content of 7 to 8 percent. No beneficiation - except the reduction of the top size to about 2 inches - took place during this period, but extensive research work has been carried out, in order to find a feasible process.Since “washing"", gravity separation, roasting and magnetic separation experiments did not indicate positive enough results, flotation was tried and found to be feasible.The beneficiation complex being installed will consist of grinding, flotation, dewatering - i.e.: thickening, filtering and drying - balling feed preparation, and agglomeration - i.e.: balling and induration.This process will result in a product superior to the ""direct shipping"" ores and will also expand the ore reserves by allowing material with a higher silica content to be utilized.THE OREThe Knob Lake ores are grouped by mineralogical composition and by grade.BLUE ORES, representing roughly two thirds of the reserves, carry their iron content mostly in the form of massive, blue hematite and martite.YELLOW ORES, about one sixth of the reserves, have predominantly hydrated iron oxides as the iron bearing minerals.RED ORES, the other sixth of the reserves, carry the iron mostly in the form of red hematite.The gangue in all ores is mainly quartz, but aluminum oxides and hydroxides are also present, particularly in the red ores."

"A 100 kg/hr portable flotation pilot plant has been operated at Kidd Creek Mines with the objectives of:(a) determining performance expected by column flotation circuits on primary zinc and copper cleaning, and (b) evaluating column flotation circuit configurations.The self-supporting pilot plant, owned by Minnovex Technologies Inc. and operated by Minnovex and the University of Toronto, consisted of three 16 cm diameter by 6.5 m high columns and a bank of four Denver No. 7 cells. It was configurable to any arrangement using these four (or fewer) units. The columns were controlled through the use of multiple pressure transducer measurements. This paper presents the approach to testing and the results of more than 70 circuit tests. INTRODUCTIONThe integration and retrofitting of flotation columns within existing mechanical cell flotation circuits is becoming a common occurrence. The correct approach to this integration, however, is often difficult to define, due to a scarcity of previous experience and the difficulty in predicting column circuit performance. In most cases, the effect of column implementation has been experimentally assessed using a single pilot column, with the consequence that selection of an appropriate circuit to implement is difficult. Important considerations are the impact that column water addition will have on the existing operations, and the differences between mechanical cell and column performance in integrated cleaning circuits.To address the problem of circuit selection a portable flotation pilot plant, consisting of both columns and mechanical cells, was designed and constructed by Minnovex Technologies. The pilot plant was structured for complete flexibility of circuit configuration, with the intent to provide a means by which both research and plant personnel could determine the best possible column circuit configuration for a given application."

The Brunswick No. 12 Mine is a 10 000 tonne per day producer of lead-zinc-copper-silver ore that has been in operation since 1964. Mining of this multiple lens deposit is primarily by blasthole stoping techniques between 400m and 1200m below surface. The combination of a high overall extraction ratio and high horizontal stresses (twice the vertical) has elevated the induced stress regime to levels comparable to much deeper operations. Improved mine design, and a better understanding of how the rock mass responds to mining in high stress environments is essential to improve overall recoveries and maintain safety. Seismic monitoring has proven to be an essential tool at Brunswick, for both short-term safety of workers, and long-term strategic planning. Practical case studies illustrate how seismic data, particularly source parameter information, can be used to measure the rockmass response to mining and improve mining layouts in difficult regions. As the global trend continues towards mining in deeper, higher stress environments (e.g. South African Witswatersrand Basin, Sudbury Basin) and as local extraction and thus ground stresses continue to increase in existing deposits, seismic monitoring will play a critical role in mining safely and economically.

"The Xstrata Nickel Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik region has been in operation since 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high grade nickel ore, plant capacity is currently approaching 1,200,000 tonnes per year due to an Optimization Project (FAG to SAG conversion) in 2005 and many recent processimprovements.In 2006, the Raglan Metallurgical Group with assistance from the Xstrata Process Support group decided to make SAG control one of its priorities in order to further increase throughput and improve stability. The original primary mill control logic delivered by the Optimisation Project in 2005 consisted of a simple PID loop controlling the mill charge (bearing pressure) through feed rate changes. Due to the multivariable, non-linear and disturbance dominated nature of the SAG circuit it was quickly found that this traditional PID control strategy was not able to adequately control the mill; resulting in poor stability, frequent operator interventions and less than optimum performance.This paper describes the successful integration of advanced field systems such as mill feed image analysis (Wipfrag) and crusher gap controller (ASRi), into a multi-variable fuzzy logic SAG mill controller. The process of how a strategy for control was developed and implemented directly in the existing control system (exploiting standard system capabilities) is discussed. It is also shown how this approach has provided mill automation which is simple, robust (despite erratic feed characteristics), and delivers both an increase in throughput and a reduction of variability.INTRODUCTIONOriginally commissioned as a Fully Autogenous Grinding (FAG) circuit in 1997, preparations to convert the Katinniq Concentrator Mill to SAG had in fact commenced as early as 1999, but were halted owing to alternative process improvements which achieved up to 1Mtpa as early as 2000. Abstract A division of part of the Canadian Shield into provinces believed to represent former mountain belts is attempted, special emphasis- being laid upon radioactive age determinations, the relation of Archaean to Proterozoic rocks, and the structure of the Grenville province. Original data on the distribution of radioactivity within several batholiths and their connection with ore deposits are' presented. The possible growth of continents and a theory which explains the shape and distribution of the world's younger mountain and island areas are discussed and applied to the Canadian Shield in an attempt to explain how the growth and present structure came about. The relation of the major mining camps of northeastern Ontario to fault zones is discussed in the light of this theory. Introduction The valuable symposium issued by this Institute to celebrate its jubilees emphasizes the important role of major faults in determining the location of many ore deposits in the Canadian Shield. Many of these faults are known to extend for long distances. It is therefore widely appreciated that it would be of great value if the pattern, ages, and causes of these faults were better understood. This would be particularly useful if the relations of the major fault systems to petrological and metallogenic provinces and to former mountain belts could be established. Each year the volume of available data, and hence the chance of reaching a fuller solution of this problem, increases. This article is a review of the present situation. It is accordingly based almost wholly upon the work and ideas of others, which are gratefully acknowledged. Naturally, responsibility for the selection and marshalling of the data is the writer's.

"Bay d'Espoir is in the approximate center of the south coast of Newfoundland. The geology of the area can most conveniently be considered in terms of three units: (1) an Ordovician or older polydeformed terrain termed the Little Passage Gneisses; (2) a Lower-Middle Ordovician volcano-sedimentary sequence assigned to the Baie d'Espoir Group; and (3) granitoid intrusive rocks of mid-Paleozoic age. Mineralizing events accompanied the formation of the latter two units.The Baie d'Espoir Group comprises a dominantly sedimentary sequence of pre-Middle Ordovician shelf and distal turbidite sediments deposited on the eastern margin of Iapetus. A significant volcanic component is, however, present in the Isle Galet Formation, consisting of up to 30% felsic volcanic rocks interbedded with sedimentary and epiclastic rocks. The Isle Galet Formation hosts several disseminated to thinly bedded Pb-Zn-Ag occurrences associated with altered felsic tuff and graphitic shale. They occasionally grade laterally into pyrite iron formation and appear to have been deposited in a very distal volcanic environment. The Isle Galet Formation is a time equivalent of the mineralized pre-Caradocian island-arc sequences of central Newfoundland, but differs from them both in style of volcanism and in the nature of the associated mineral deposits. It is, however, comparable in many respects to mineralized volcanic sequences in the La Poile Bay area of southwestern Newfoundland.Mineralization associated with granitoid rocks in Bay d'Espoir is best developed around the southeast margin of the North Bay Granite, where two-mica leucogranite forms a marginal phase. Numerous minor base metal showings occupy quartz, quartz-carbonate and barite veins in the adjacent sedimentary rocks. Collectively, the showings exhibit a well-developed, zonal pattern around the granite margin; molybdenite (±py, cpy) predominates near the contact, giving way outward to galena (±sph, py, asp, cpy) and eventually to stibnite (±asp, py) at the periphery. Mineralization associated with granites in similar settings elsewhere in southern Newfoundland includes tungsten in the Grey River and Granite Lake areas and molybdenite in the Rencontre Lake area."

The mining sector is a major economic driver for Canadian, and British Columbian communities. In parallel strong commitments have been made by industry to the well-being and sustainability of associated communities. However, these dimensions are the least understood. Especially lacking are focused regional investigations that compare the well-being and sustainability of communities dependent on different resources sectors. It is hypothesized that this type of comparative analysis will help to foster a greater understanding of what makes a resource or mining community healthy and sustainable. This paper describes research that examined community-level indicators associated with well-being (e.g. education, income and employment) and sustainability (e.g. economic diversity). The indicators were derived from Canadian Census data for 31 British Columbia resource-based communities (with a focus on mining) during a period of time (1991 to 2001) when resource sectors experienced an economic downturn. Our findings identify that during this decade, mining communities differed significantly from other resource-based communities, and comparative analysis of census derived indictors illuminate challenges that mining communities in British Columbia face with respect to wellbeing and sustainability (such as economic diversity, unemployment, and population loss). To contribute to the mining sector?s efforts towards meeting their commitments to communities, this paper concludes by proposing strategic opportunities aimed at the enhancement of mining community sustainability for policy-makers, communities, and the mining industry to consider.

"The application of geometallurgy and corresponding sample selection can take on several formats within industry. Current practice can range from a strictly geostatistical approach to one in which geological and metallurgical parameters are used in combination to create a representative sample selection strategy. The stage of a project and the level of information available at the time of sampling influences the methodology used to create a representative sample.A geometallurgical study of Carpathian Gold’s Rovina Valley Project in Romania is used to demonstrate a sample selection strategy that integrates geological, mineralogical and metallurgical data to maximize the relevance of the geometallurgical unit definitions. This approach, practiced by Xstrata Process Support for its’ clients, ensures that the results of the metallurgical program can be interpreted in the context of these units.INTRODUCTIONGeometallurgy is a cross disciplinary approach in which metallurgical performance of an ore is linked to intrinsic geological and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of a geometallurgical study is to characterize the range of metallurgical performance of an orebody. This allows the geoscientist or metallurgist to create a robust flowsheet able to treat the full range in variability and to develop production strategies to maximize financial performance. The standard approach is to individually sample and test a series of ore types or geometallurgical units. Several different approaches are used in industry to define what constitutes geometallurgical units and how to sample them.One current methodology is the use of multivariate statistics. Geochemical data along with available geological data are used to define multiple variability domains (Williams, 2004; Walters, 2009). There are risks associated with this methodology since the extent of the data set itself may not support a purely statistical approach at the time that metallurgical units need to be defined. The assay suite collected by exploration programs is often limited to pay metals while metallurgical performance is often affected by ore gangue components. Furthermore, in many cases metallurgical scoping and pre-feasibility studies take place prior to the availability of extensive geochemical data sets. Purely statistical methods can produce multiple populations which require extensive sampling, testing and validation prior to consolidation into a reasonable number of composites for metallurgical testing. Methodologies are therefore required that allow representative sampling and testing of consolidated geometallurgical composites to occur at various phases throughout the development of a mining project."

"Froth depth, along with reagent addition and aeration rate, is one of the crucial factors that can be used to control a flotation circuit. Sub-optimal setpoints and disruptions in levels have a severe adverse influence on grades and recoveries. A novel control strategy has been developed which provides exceptionally tight regulation of pulp levels. The controller observes and acts on all the flotation levels simultaneously. This provides a clear improvement over the standard approach, which is to use a set of Pl controllers. The system has been run on several industrial plants and has resulted in reduced fluctuations in level; fast responses to setpoint changes, and fast settling times after start-ups or disturbances. Testwork has shown that the improvements in level stabilisation translate into improvements in recovery and grades.IntroductionProcess control and optimization have an important influence on the economic efficiency of flotation plants. Inefficient operation can allow the wrong balance between grades and recoveries, and can also lead to adverse shifts in the grade-recovery relationship. Of all metallurgical operations, flotation loses the largest proportion of valuable material. Better operation can reduce these losses.An essential requirement of a good controller is that it should be able to stabilize and regulate the plant. Stable operation allows the performance of the plant to be observed without being obscured by the effects of disturbances and fluctuations. The optimum conditions can then be detected more easily. Good regulation can maintain operation at the optimum with proper neutralization of disturbances. Only when good stabilization and regulation are achieved can an optimizing strategy be properly applied.Froth depth, aeration rate and reagent addition are the three means by which a flotation plant is generally controlled. These control actions are effective on different time scales. Reagent addition is slower in its effect as some conditioning time is required. Since reagents are only added at the head of the circuit and at a few selected points within the banks, time is required for the effect of reagent changes to move through the circuit. Because of this slower time constant, reagent addition is more suited to process optimization and to dealing with slower changes in the process. An example of these slower changes is variation in the feed."

"The Sudbury area environment became drastically altered commencing in 1871 with lumbering, repeated fires and early open roasting operations from 1887 to 1929. These combined factors had such a pronounced effect that approximately 24 square miles were totally denuded of any vegetation and 87 square miles were semi-barren to somewhat stressed.The two nickel producing companies in the area have reduced the sulphur dioxide emissions considerably over the years. Falconbridge Limited, alone, reduced sulphur dioxide emissions by 77% from 1971 to 1984.These reductions have resulted in improvements to the air, soil, lake and vegetation quality in the Sudbury area.INTRODUCTIONThe Sudbury area environment became drastically altered commencing in the 1870's with lumbering, repeated fires and early open roasting operations from 1888 to 1929. These combined factors had such a pronounced effect on the Sudbury environment that approximately 24 square miles (64 sq. km.) were totally denuded of any vegetation and 87 square miles (225 sq. km.) were semi-barren.Over the years, the Sudbury area environment has improved considerably. This has been due to emission cutbacks by both Inco Metals and Falconbridge Limited, coupled with industry, government and community reclamation programs. Before the improvements are discussed, a better understanding of the historical degradation is required."

"Ironstone Resources Ltd. is developing the Clear Hills oolitic iron ore deposit in northwest Alberta, Canada. Sources of oolitic iron ore worldwide are abundant and ubiquitous, but there is currently no commercial technology to extract iron from oolitic iron ores. Mineral processing of the ore to generate a commercial iron ore concentrate is very challenging due to the nature of these ores. Accordingly, Hatch and Ironstone are developing a new pyrometallurgical process (Hatch Ironstone Chloride Segregation) to produce metallic iron from high silica and high phosphorus oolitic iron ores. Following the chloride segregation process, the treated ore is subjected to fine grinding. The iron is then separated by magnetic separation. The iron grade and phosphorus content of the final product shows a strong dependence on the separation methodology and the grind size. The pyrometallurgical process has been developed and tested at a lab-scale pilot plant. The commercialization of this technology could provide an opportunity for the development of a new alternate iron making technology. This paper presents the results of test work done on the raw iron ore to create a concentrate and also on the products of the pyrometallurgical process for the production of a high grade 90% metallic iron product.INTRODUCTION Oolite is a sedimentary rock formed from ooids – spherical particles with concentric layers. There are a number of large oolitic iron deposits where the mineralogical form features a low iron content and high concentration of impurities making them presently impossible to exploit on either a technical or economic basis. The fifteen largest oolitic iron ore deposits in the world are estimated to contain approximately 337 billion tonnes of iron ore, which would be a significant source of supply for worldwide steel production. A viable process that can economically recover iron from these oolitic iron ore deposits could become an important new technology to meet future demand in the steel industry. Hatch and Ironstone have demonstrated that oolitic iron ores can be exploited to produce direct reduced iron (DRI). Direct reduction ironmaking is a method for producing solid metallic iron using different techniques compared to the blast furnace process, which is the more conventional ironmaking route. The demand for the construction of direct reduction ironmaking plants has increased in response to the increasing demand for crude steel. It is viewed as a method of providing low-residual iron sources to scrap-based steelmaking in electric arc furnaces."

The Waite mine, as it is locally termed, is situated in the Rouyn district, in the townships of Duprat and Dufresnoy, Quebec, and lies about 340 miles north of Toronto. Due to the impetus given prospecting in the Rouyn district by the discovery, some years ago, of copper-gold ore on the Horne claims, many exploration parties were put into the field. Early in 1925, J. H. C. Waite, C. H. Ackerman, and T. Montgomery staked the claims which now comprise the mine beating their names. Trenching and diamond drilling soon disclosed an ore-body of commercial size and grade, and by the end of 1928 a shaft had been sunk 300 feet and the mine was producing 150 tons of direct-smelting copper ore a day. In the summer of 1925, Dr. H. C. Cooke, of the Geological Survey, made a reconnaissance survey of the property (1), and since that time work of the same nature has been done by several others. MacGregor has published some interesting data on the Amulet mine (2). Using as a background a summer's work on the Horne claims at Noranda, the writer spent the summer of 1929 at the Waite.

The Jabiluka One and Two uranium deposits occur in Lower Proterozoic metasediments of the Cahill Formation, which is part of the Pine Creek Geosyncline in the East Alligator River area, Nothern Territory. The Jabiluka One deposit coincides with a "window" through unconformably overlying Middle Proterozoic sandstone of the Kombolgie Formation; Jabiluka Two is completely covered by that sandstone. The observed part of the Cahill Formation exhibits four horizons which are favourable hosts for uranium mineralization. These have been folded into an east-southeast-striking, gently plunging, open asymmetric syncline-anticline structure. The host rocks are mainly chlorite and/or graphite schists and their brecciated equivalents which have undergone initial regional prograde metamorphism to the amphibolite facies, then retrograde metamorphism to the greenschist facies. Mineralization consists of pitchblende, mainly filling open spaces and to a lesser extent in disseminated form. Chlorite, pyrite and quartz are commonly associated with the uranium mineralization. A portion of the Jabiluka Two deposit contains economic concentrations of gold. Structural preparation with low-pressure conditions at these sites appears to be the most significant ore control. Genetic hypotheses favour initial deposition in Lower Proterozoic sediments, followed by remobilization during later orogenic events. The deposits bear a marked similarity to some pitchblende deposits in central Canada.

"Water quality plays an important role in oxide flotation. The effects on selective flotation of fine (1-16 um) pyrochlore of two types of water used at the Niobec concentrator, potable and plant recycle, were assessed. Several pyrochlore collectors and silicate depressants were tested. Water effects were different for each mineral-reagents) combination. In general plant recycle water decreased selectivity and increased reagent consumption. Interpretation of results is given in terms of electrokinetic effects, hydrolysis of cations, and mineral-collector interactions. Two techniques of treatment for plant recycle water, cation precipitation and zeolite adsorption were assessed. The former was found to be more effective under the tested conditions but recycle water continued to give poorer selectivity than the potable.INTRODUCTIONWater quality plays an important role in selective flotation. Specific effects have been reported by many workers (1-6) and in general the better the water quality the more selective is flotation. Water composition depends on origin and the minerals being processed. For example pulp containing salt-type minerals (calcite, apatite, dolomite) will contain more Ca and Mg cations than that from a sulphide deposit. Another source of water contamination is the flotation reagents added to the pulp, particularly if water recycling is practiced."

"Reclamation legislation was introduced in British Columbia in 1969 amidst public concern and controversy. This paper reviews this legislation as it relates to coal mining, and how it is being implemented.Although the principles of land reclamation are reason-ably well understood, reclamation of industrial wasteland has never previously been attempted under such rugged conditions as occur in the Canadian Rockies and a new methodology is being developed.The resolution of the technical and organizational problems involved are discussed and the techniques and experiences described."
