BHAS, together with the G.K. Williams Laboratory, and Ausmelt Pty. Ltd., has examined a number of possible alternatives to conventional silver cupellation in gas fired reverberatory furnaces. Of these alternatives, a Sirosmelt furnace was preferred for both technical and economic reasons. Small scale work on Sirosmelt processes was carried out at the G.K. Williams Laboratory at Melbourne University in 1985/86. Pilot scale work was carried out at the Ausmelt plant in Melbourne in July 1987. Board approval for construction of a full size plant was received in October, 1988, and construction of the plant is currently underway. The plant is expected to provide significant savings in operating costs and silver inventory. Hygiene around the furnace should also be greatly improved. An increase in cupellation rate of at least ten times is expected, compared with the conventional reverberatory furnace.

Simcoa Operations is the only silicon smelter in the region and since the plant was commissioned in late-1989, has progressed from supplying silicon metal to the secondary aluminium market to the current position of supplying in excess of 90 per cent of its production to the high quality chemical and primary aluminium markets. This position has been achieved through the unique advantage which Simcoa has developed within the industry, namely raw materials, people and Simcoa's ability to adopt and use modern technology. A quality culture was instilled into the workforce prior to commissioning which ultimately led to AS3902 qualification in 1992. Simcoa has continued its quality drive through the formation of 'Simcoa's Quality Leadership Process' which is planned to make Simcoa the best silicon producer in the world.

The key goals for mine site rehabilitation require mine managers to demonstrate that rehabilitation is safe, stable, self-sustainable and non-polluting. Within this context, it is reasonable for stakeholders to expect that mine site rehabilitation is resilient to disturbance impacts such as fire and drought. However, mine managers actively avoid fire on rehabilitation; and as a result have limited understanding of fire behaviour on revegetated landforms, the long term implications for site stability and the potential risk to site relinquishment. An experimental fire that was conducted at the Curragh Mine site in May 2015, burnt 117 ha of 19- to 21-year old mine site rehabilitation, mimicking wildfire conditions and creating a mosaic of fire impacts across the landform. Using a combination of ground surveys and remote sensing assessments, we demonstrate that over a two year period, ecological metrics such as species richness, woody density and understorey biomass all recover to pre-fire levels for both grassland and open woodland areas. This is supported by WorldView-3 satellite imagery and the remote sensing assessment using the differenced Normalised Differenced Vegetation Index (dNDVI) which shows high regrowth within the burn area in 12- and 24-month image captures. The results suggest that within the recorded conditions, this site is resilient to fire impacts, and has the capacity to recover to pre-fire levels within the first two years following the fire.CITATION:McKenna, P, Erskine, P D, Phinn, S, Glenn, V and Doley, D, 2018. A rotary type separator has been developed which separates particles on the basis of their shape. This separator was applied to a particle size range of about 50 - 120 ¦m, and to our present knowledge may be the smallest size range ever to be separated. A theory of the separation is given based on the difference of an adhesive force of the particles: the adhesive force between spherical particles and plate is more powerful than that of irregular shaped particles for the same particle size. These facts have been ascertained by the measurement of an adhesive force by a centrifugal method. US and Japanese patents have been obtained on this separator, which consists of a borosilicate glass cylinder of 150 mm outside diameter, 120 mm in width, and an AC electromagnet. The samples used in this study were mixtures of spherical glass particles and non-spherical shaped glass particles. The results are summarised as follows. In the case of mixtures of spherical particles and irregular shaped particles in the weight ratio of 1:1, the spherical content of the spherical product became 70 per cent - 75 per cent, and in the case of 3:1, the content became 87 per cent - 90 per cent, as the result of one separating operation. However, for a mixture of somewhat rounded particles and irregular shaped particles of weight ratio 1:1, the rounded content varied between 58 per cent - 73 per cent. The feed rate of the particles mixtures was about 0.3 g/min. Newton's Efficiency was 20 per cent - 60 per cent. The separator may find application in shape separation of ceramic powder, metal powder or industrial diamond powder.

Paste backfill has been adopted by many underground mines in North America and a growing number elsewhere. Paste offers a number of advantages. This paper suggests wider applications of paste technology to surface tailings disposal and water management. Advantages include improved overall stability, potentially easier permitting, smaller water inventory and earlier reclamation. It may be feasible to use the same plant to prepare backfill and to dispose of surplus tailings. Example cost models are given to illustrate potential applications.

Current best management practice requires the placement of a cover onto most types of mine waste including tailings, waste rock and/or spent heap leach rock at closure of the mine. The objectives of a cover system may vary from site to site but generally include dust and erosion control; chemical stabilisation of acid-forming mine waste (through control of oxygen ingress) contaminant release control (through control of infiltration); and/or provision of a growth medium for establishment of sustainable vegetation. In our experience, there has been a general tendency by stakeholders to develop performance criteria for cover systems, which are tied directly to these specific design objectives. In many cases, this practice has led to the development of single, often very conservative, numerical values of cover performance criteria such as ænet percolationÆ, ærate of oxygen ingressÆ and/or æplant density/mixtureÆ. In our opinion, there is a need to develop cover performance criteria on a case-by-case basis and with due consideration of the short-term and long-term impacts on the receiving environment at a particular site. This paper puts forward a methodology for developing site-specific performance criteria for a cover system designed to isolate acid-forming mine waste and to control acid rock drainage. The proposed methodology links the predicted performance of a cover system to groundwater and surface water impacts. This way, the appropriate level of control (of oxygen ingress and/or net percolation) required by the cover system can be determined. A case study is presented that illustrates the application of the methodology proposed in this paper.

Synthesis of GLORIA side-scan sonar and other geophysical data has provided morpholo- gical and tectonic details of the interaction between the Nazca and South American plates along the Peru Trench (80S-15¦S). Our analyses suggest that a new propagating rift of the Galapagos type is evolving along the Mendana Fracture Zone (MFZ). Subduction induced rift- ing of the Nazca plate is accompanied by organized seafloor spreading for the last 3 Ma at least. GLORIA sonographs and bathymetric mapping show an 8-10¦ divergence in MFZ width towards the Peru Trench. The fracture zone comprises numerous ridges and troughs and a lack of sediment cover in the axial part. Young magnetic lineations (anomalies 1-2A) are observed within the fracture zone wni.cn are orthogonal to the older Nazca plate lineations. The central anomaly narrows west- ward and can be observed up to 400 km seaward of the trench whereas anomaly 2A is terminated about 200 km from the trench axis. Recent SeaMARC II sonar mapping in the region shows large igneous blocks in the Trench axis to the north of MFZ but absent to the south. We believe these blocks represent young seafloor of MFZ rift/spreading center broken off from the ridges as they subduct along the Peru Trench. The MFZ rift is propagating west- ward at a rate of 115 km/Ma (25 km/Ma relative to the South American plate). Given the present rates of accretion at the East Pacific Rise and of propagation along MFZ rift, the Nazca plate will be divided into two parts in about 35 Ma.

Electrostatic separation is a core requirement for the beneficiation of mineral sands suites to provide valuable product. Although the basis of electrostatic separation has been understood for some time, the details required to be able to calculate the metallurgical performance of a separator has not previously been achieved from a mechanistic perspective. Empirical models have had some success but require extensive test work. Traditionally, performance of an electrostatic separator is determined by careful experimental work using the target mineral suite. Although electrostatic separation was invented at the end of the 19th century, very little modification of the basic equipment occurred until relatively recently, with the addition of a plate electrode to aid separation. Previously, the author has presented results, calculated using finite element modelling (FEM), of the electric fields present in an electrostatic separator in various configurations. This paper will present some new mathematical modelling work, which uses the FEM determined electric field configurations but also incorporates some fundamental physical processes that provide insight as to the limitations and opportunities for this important separation technique.

Mining had a very considerable effect on the country's development. The visual evidence remaining is an integral part of New Zealand history. Early mining for manganese and copper in the 1840s was succeeded by alluvial gold rushes. These gave way to hard rock extraction, hydraulic elevation and dredging. Coal mining dating from the 1850s was fairly widespread. Other minerals were obtained on a small scale. Manufacture of mining' machinery stimulated industrial engineering enterprises. Schools of mines played a significant part in advancing technical skills and several remain as museums. Surviving mine structures and site relics are part of the industrial heritage signifying the technological and economic development of a small isolated nation. Some of these are described. Identification, recording and preservation where practicable is advocated.

Accurate estimation of rock load and selection of types of ground reinforcement to match post-failure behaviour of rock mass are important issues to assure tunnel stability. This paper focuses on the main factors affecting rock load to evaluate the capabilities of the existing models for prediction of rock load. Rock mass properties, project features and excavation method, as well as ground conditions and stress condition were found to be the key factors affecting the magnitude of rock load. Field data from tunnels of about 37.5?km driven in several geological structures in non-squeezing ground was used in this study. An in depth statistical analysis was performed on data to find correlations between the input parameters and measured/observed rock load. A weighting system was proposed to obtain the proper contribution of each factor for estimation of rock load in tunnelling through various ground conditions. The new classification system offered predicted values for rock load that were in a good agreement with the actual field measurements. The high disturbance factor (D>0.4) was the prime factor which controlled the rock load. Rock mass quality was the second key factor influencing rock load, which could be estimated by GSI, GSIresidual , especially when combined with tunnel depth.CITATION:Afshar, T, Sharifzadeh, M and Rostami, J, 2014. Peak Gold Mines (PGM), a member of the Rio Tinto Group, is an underground and open cut gold mining operation located near Cobar, NSW. A multi-phase study was initiated in 2001 in support of developing a dry æmoisture store and releaseÆ cover system design for the PGM tailings dam, which contains potentially acid-forming tailings material. The first phase consisted of characterising the tailings and potential cover material (waste rock from an open cut operation) as well as soil-atmosphere cover design modelling. The second phase involved construction of two cover system field trials on the tailings dam and installation of a variety of field instruments to monitor the hydraulic performance of the test covers during all seasons of the year. Field performance monitoring commenced in April 2002 and will continue for a minimum of two wet-dry climate cycles (third phase), prior to using the field data for calibration and subsequent validation of numerical models developed for the cover system trials (fourth phase). This paper describes the work completed for the first two project phases and also discusses the initial performance of the cover system trials.

Offshore petroleum development involves massive capital expenditure and financing demands, with the main participants being large international oil companies and State owned enterprises. Types of project oriented financing include take-or-pay contracts, throughput agreements, and production payment financing. The main project finance credit aspects are revenues, investment budgets and cost over- runs, reservoir, political and other risks and special problems such as weather and corrosion in the North Sea. A variety of documents is required and a mix of equity, export credit and Euro-market financing will typically be included in the financing.

With the theme of û æUnderground Ore Handling SystemÆ, Kopanang Mine completed an extensive project on a specific system with technologies for the handling of ore from a dedicated drawpoint to the shaft system. The intended rail haulage tramming system had to be capable of handling the shaft design and Life of Mine (LOM) requirements. Kopanang is an AngloGold Ashanti gold mine situated in the province of the Free State in South Africa. In the Sotho language the name æKopanangÆ means to come together as a team. ItÆs an appropriate name given that 25 companies worked on this project. The future focus at Kopanang is to establish four mining levels between 3 to 4 km south-west of the shaft and two mining levels to the west. The mine has an expected life of almost 20 years and capital was approved in order to access this reserve to establish the infrastructure to handle the ore, hence this exclusive rail haulage tramming system of close to R40 million (SA rands), which took three years to construct. Apart from the fact that this system had to be capable of handling 6500 t per shift at a depth of over 2 km over a length of 3.2 km, some of the major considering factors were: safety, economic factors with improved labour productivity, efficiency and reliability, risk termination, and ergonomics. The system comprises two 20 t locomotives operating in a double header configuration from a dedicated draw point to a dedicated tip area for the reef and waste ore. With the objective of handling high speed and high capacity, this 200 t payload train is capable of running at 35 km/h powered from a 500 volt ac overhead line. Each loco consists of two 90 kW dc motors with ac/dc power conversion on the locomotive. For the system to operate at this speed, the rail system is constructed with Class 1 rails over the entire hauling distance. The tipping mechanism is unique and the span of 11 hoppers each with a load of close to 20 t is capable of tipping the pay load of 200 t in about 20 seconds hands free.

New Zealand has an established history of gold production beginning with the gold rushes of the 19th century in the Coromandel, Nelson/Marlborough, West Coast and Otago regions. Despite this, the number of significant modern hard rock gold operations has been limited in recent years due to a lack of sustained exploration capital and not limited geological prospectivity.The New Zealand Government is actively encouraging explorers to invest in New Zealand through a series of targeted promotional visits, more importantly through the acquisition of precompetitive regional geophysical data. Data collection has been completed over the prospective Northland epithermal district and a large portion of the South IslandÆs west coast that is prospective for both orogenic gold and intrusive related gold.Analysis of new data has been an important component in aiding the generation of exploration targets from prospectivity modelling. Determining the prospectivity of an area involves reviewing all the available data and analysing it with respect to the most up-to-date mineral system model for the mineralisation style of interest. Using the weights of evidence modelling approach, the most prospective areas for epithermal gold-silver, orogenic gold and intrusion-related gold have been identified. The key exploration parameters relevant to each mineral system are first represented spatially and then statistically combined into a single prospectivity map. New potentially economic deposits could be found by focusing exploration on targets identified from these models. The Wiluna mining operations are centred near the township of Wiluna 750 kilometres north-east of Perth and 600 kilometres east of Geraldton.The Wiluna gold mines produced over two million ounces of gold, predominantly by roasting the refractory sulphide ores, before closing in 1947. In the period 1984 to 1992, 668 000 ounces of gold has been produced from free milling oxide ores and the retreatment of tailing. A plant capable of treating the refractory sulphide ores using the bacterial oxidation, Biox technique was commissioned in March, 1993.The Wiluna lode deposits are hosted by a sequence of very low grade metamorphosed mafic flows at the northern end of the Norseman-Wiluna greenstone belt. A strike slip fault system provided conduits for fluid migration; ore deposition occurred at favourable sites along the faults. Satellite mines at Gourdis and Wiluna South provide laterite and lode style oxide ores.The different styles of deposit and ore types at the Wiluna mining operations require a flexible approach to resource estimation and grade control practices.

Safety and health at work is about people. It is about people who plan for work, organise work and perform work. It is about those who come in contact with the workplace and those who are responsible for the workplace. There are wider ranging safety and health obligations that are imposed on the industry stakeholders that span all phases of the production process. In all cases, those responsible for discharging the obligations must ask the questions: Is what we propose safe?, can it be done safer? and are we sure? What we learn from recent legal cases before the courts is that it is essential that all stakeholders work together in a collaborative way when discharging these obligations. Safety and health at work cannot become an issue that is viewed only through the eyes of a single stakeholder group. The reason for this is quite simple. The interrelatedness of the responsibilities that are imposed on each of the stakeholder groups, means that the performance based legislation simply wont work, where an active model of communication and consultation is not in place.

The mining industry is facing some key challenges that provide a compelling case for geometallurgy initiatives. Over the last 30 years, the average grade of Australian orebodies being mined has halved while the waste removed to access the minerals has more than doubled. In the last eight years, the industry’s energy consumption has increased 70 per cent while multi-factored productivity has fallen 24 per cent. The paper documents a broad range of industry case studies which demonstrate strategies for gaining value from geometallurgy.The mining industry constantly faces the key questions of how significant ore variability is on mine valuation and how would knowledge of the variability change the mining schedule, mine to mill design and operation. Using case studies the paper describes the methods used for incorporating mineral extraction attributes into orebody models and their technical integration into daily operation as well as mine planning optimisation. While pit optimisation from a fully attributed geometallurgical model highlights areas of opportunity and risk it is shown that during the scheduling phase of mine planning that significant value can be added. The benefits from these projects included reducing geotechnical and environmental risk, improving mine to mill performance, option analysis and quantified cash flow risk. There is growing acceptance within the minerals industry that ‘realistically assumed modifying factors’ defined by a competent person/s are not sufficient to mitigate the risk of funding mining ventures. Geometallurgy is moving away from factored ore reserves to data-rich block models providing reliable information for mining, metallurgical and environmental considerations.

BHP Iron Ore Ltd's Mt Whaleback is the largest single open-pit iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Northwestern Western Australia. A division of BHP Minerals, one of three core businesses of Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd (BHP), BHP Iron Ore - Newman is a joint venture with minor participants C Itoh Minerals and Mitsui. Mine planning for Mt Whaleback generates detailed sequence plans for a long term forecast incorporating equipment requirements, marketing forecasts, and pit development strategy. Utilisation of several computer packages, both commercially available and site modified, are necessary to achieve such a demanding task.

Recent catastrophic failures of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) continue to highlight the need for a detailed understanding of failure modes and the defences that are in place within the design to mitigate the failure modes. However, in many cases the instrumentation devices and monitoring approaches selected during operation do not link back to the design defences and inappropriate or redundant instrumentation is often installed. Candidate instruments and monitoring approaches (critical controls) are presented and matched to critical failure modes, with clear linkages to the intent of each instrument/monitoring approach. Commentary on where complementary measurements with independent technology types are recommended to provide greater assurance of trends to the design engineer or TSF owner is also presented. In response to the recent TSF failures, an increasing focus is being placed on instrumentation and monitoring relating to slope instability and safeguarding against the potential for static liquefaction, using a critical state soil mechanics framework. To support selection of appropriate zoning within a stability model, three complementary devices are recommended – vibrating wire piezometers to provide an indication of pore pressure and allow the phreatic surface to be inferred, tensiometers to confirm the presence of unsaturated conditions (and hence low potential for undrained failure) and moisture content sensors to provide an indication of void ratio, and hence state parameter, in saturated zones. The combination of VWPs and tensiometers will provide complementary measurements in the saturated and unsaturated zones, and also provide information on the extent of any near-saturated zones, provided that sufficient instruments are installed.
