By using knowledge-based technology to create a Virtual Mining Enterprise and integrating it with existing technical and financial computer systems, a gold mining company has been able to reduce the time taken to produce a mine plan from 14 weeks to less than one week. Typically, the mine planning process requires circulating and managing large amounts of information. Even with the use of computers in todayÆs business, this is often still a manual process involving file transfers and individualised spreadsheets. Mine planning also involves understanding and managing large quantities of complex and interrelated variables. Added to this is the ever changing dynamics and constraints associated with the business of mining. These issues not only hamper the planning process but also question the validity and usefulness of the mine plans being generated. By integrating the information and knowledge of the numerous departments involved in mine planning into one core Knowledge Base - so called æone version of the truthÆ, - mining companies are able to overcome these pitfalls experienced in traditional planning methods. Once set up, the Knowledge Base creates and runs a virtual mining enterprise with which to visualise and test various scenarios of mining, business and logistical activities. The final output is an optimised enterprise-wide plan with clear and detailed instructions for each of the divisions of the company.

Two new splitter designs for intercepting moving streams of matter are presented, the variable cross-stream splitter (vCSS) and the rotary stream splitter (RSS), which are intended for implementation in a fully automated modus. The vCSS facilitates obtaining up to three subsamples with different splitting ratios from automated laboratory flow paths, while the RSS divides the intercepted sample into 16 equal analytical aliquots. The splitters can process a wide range of dry, granular and free-flowing materials (<5 mm). The required weight for each subsample can be set without mechanical adjustments in the case of the vCSS. Typical applications are subsampling/splitting for X-ray fluorescence pelletisation (or fused beads) or splitting for average shift composite sampling or grain size analysis. The vCSS combines the advantages of riffle splitting (three user-defined subsample masses) with miniature bed blending and can accept up to 15 kg in total incoming sample mass. In practice, the automated vCSS can deal with unlimited ingoing mass fluxes, while the RSS is designed to operate at a user-defined fixed subsampling rate (1/16th in the tested version). Both splitters have the potential to be optimised and evaluated according to an application/user-defined total sampling error (TSE) + total analytical error (TAE) threshold. Both splitters were tested under adverse conditions and with compositions involving three components with properties representing typical mass fluxes and components concentrations in industrial and technological systems: phosphate concentrate 89.00 per cent (<500 µm), slag ten per cent (>2 mm) and glass spheres one per cent (750–1000 µm). The slag particles vary widely in particle shape, aspect ratio and surface roughness, while the glass spheres are extremely prone to bouncing and segregation (spillage). This test system is extremely difficult to split and thus constitutes a realistic worst-case scenario. While the vCSS does not comply strictly with Theory of Sampling demands for correctness, both splitters may well be able to deliver fit-for-purpose representative results if/when tested properly. Average relative mass deviations ranged from 1.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate (relative standard deviations of 20-fold repeated splitting) to 4.72 per cent for glass spheres and 13.04 per cent for slag. For the RSS, the average replication experiment splitting variation was 2.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate, 4.82 per cent for glass spheres and 11.1 per cent for slag. Both new automated online splitters would therefore appear to be able to be tuned to fit-for-purpose representivity (defined here as maximum relative reproducibility <5 per cent) for many non-extreme materials; however, it is always imperative to test every new type/class of material empirically. Construction of cave mining systems requires significant capital expenditure and long-term commitment of human, equipment and material resources before production commences. Risks and uncertainties of these large-scale mining projects are significantly higher than for small-scale projects. This is due to the complexity and interactions of the construction schedule components and the large scale and uniqueness of such projects. One way to successfully manage construction uncertainties that would lead to schedule delays is to include a reasonable cost contingency in the budget estimation. A real options approach based on the least-squares Monte Carlo (LSM) method is used to estimate cost contingency associated with schedule uncertainty in mass mining projects. Cost contingency is estimated as the cost of potential project crashing (acceleration) decisions, which pays for not extending the schedule. While such a significant undertaking is expected to be subject to some delays, these can have an enormous impact on the economic value of such projects. The value of the crashing option was explicitly formalised into the process of valuation, as it is assumed to be a single option being considered in the valuation at every decision point prior to the construction completion date. As a part of the proposed method, a stochastic function for the percentage of remaining scope of work for the remaining duration of the entire project was integrated into a framework of numerical simulations. This ensured that this function can implicitly account for sources of schedule uncertainties for projects represented by multiple and overlapping work packages. The LSM method was applied to a real case scenario in an operating block cave mine, with modified scale and features. The results yielded by the LSM method indicated that significant changes in capital budget allocation stem from variation in a contractor’s risk perception and confidence level of estimated delays.CITATION:Ahmed, H M and Dunbar, W S, 2016. The erratic and localised occurrence of economic gold grades is a common feature of high-nugget effect gold veins. The nugget effect is a consequence of small-scale geologically controlled enrichment, and the inclusion or exclusion of sparse gold particles because of the sampling process. Such deposits do not always contain visible or coarse gold, and can be characterised by fine gold particles. Economic grade accumulations are generally contained within discrete oreshoots, which are surrounded by barren to low-grade material. Problems are often encountered where small sample types (eg drill core or channel samples) often vastly understate in situ grade, due to their general inability to intersect rare gold particles. As a result, the definition of grade and its distribution is often challenging, and leads to substantial resource uncertainty. Proxies, or indicators for grade, can help the geologist gain a better understanding of grade distribution and grade potential. These are based upon geological (eg mineralogical, textural, etc) and/or geochemical (eg specific elemental ratios, fluid inclusion compositions, elemental correlations, etc) criteria. The paper discusses the use and application of such proxies through three case studies.

The metallogenic map of New Zealand shows the distribution of metallic mineral deposits, according to type and size, in relation to their geological setting. The major purpose of the map and accompanying 200-page monograph is to summarise the distribution, modes of occurrence and origins of the metallic mineral deposits of New Zealand. The map demonstrates the prospectivity of New Zealand for metallic minerals, particularly gold, silver, iron, and titanium. Information on each deposit is summarised in index tables based on major geotectonic units or deposit/commodity type. The mineral deposits are arranged and discussed in relation to tectonostratigraphic and tectonomagmatic units or terranes, under broad geotectonic divisions of the Paleozoic to Mesozoic Western Province, the late Paleozoic to Mesozoic Eastern Province, the mid Cretaceous to early Tertiary rifting phase, and the late Cenozoic Kaikoura Orogen. Regions or areas of marked concentration of mineralisation are recognised as metallogenic subprovinces or districts, namely: eastern Northland (Hg), the Hauraki Goldfield (epithermal Au-Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu), the west coast of the North Island (shoreline placer Fe), east Nelson (podiform Cr), west Nelson (porphyry Mo), the West Coast of the South Island (shoreline placer Ti), west Nelson-Westland (placer Au), Reefton (mesothermal Au-quartz veins), and Otago (placer Au and mesothermal Au-W quartz veins).

The emergence of China as a global economic power has not been without its birth pangs and the current coal market is testimony to this. Traditionally the coal market has been controlled by mature economies that functioned along balanced lines of supply and demand. The emergence of China and India as major forces in the international market has shifted this balance of power from mature economies to the developing economies of China and India. Of late Chinese Central Government policy has caused wide swings in the supply of Chinese coking coal and thermal coal to the international Asian markets. This has resulted in huge increases in demand for coal from producers in Australia, Canada, Indonesia, USA and Russia. Additionally since the late 1990s the liberalised Chinese economy has been growing by between nine to 12 per cent per annum. The corresponding rise in the standard of living of their 1.4 billion people has resulted in a strong demand for raw materials, initially met by domestic production and more recently met by the importation of raw materials including iron ore, oil, coking coal and thermal coal. Commensurate with this growth in China has been the emergence of India (pop one billion) as another major developing economy in the region. Whilst the Indian standard of living is lower than that of the Chinese, this subcontinent still has some 300 million people with middle class consumption demands. India is a major importer of oil, coking coal and thermal coal. It exports iron ore to China with growth parallel to China (seven to nine per cent per annum). These combined new demands from India and China have put unprecedented pressure on the global supply of coking and thermal coals. These pressures are reflected in the current world spot prices for coking and thermal coals which are at historically high levels. Whilst current demand from China and India is high it is anticipated that new projects will partially satisfy this increasing demand. Expectations are that overall thermal and coking coal prices will rise steadily. This paper seeks to identify the potential effects of Chinese and Indian economic growth on the international markets for coal.

Barrick (Australia Pacific) Limited initiated a trial of Caterpillar’s Minegem autonomous loader technology in 2009 at the Kanowna Belle mine in Kalgoorlie. Autonomous loader technology offers the potential to improve loader productivity, reduce operating costs and improve safety through removing personnel from the mine operating environment. This paper discusses the implementation of the technology at the mine site, the data collected during the trial and quantifies the benefits of using automated loader technology in comparison with teleremote loader operation. The lessons learned from the trial and work planned for the future in respect of this technology is also discussed.

The Goondicum Crater industrial minerals deposit is located about 30 km east of Monto, Central Queensland, Australia. Early exploration programs in the 1990s found alluvial ilmenite along the banks of the Burnett River. This mineralisation was traced upstream to the Goondicum Crater. The Goondicum Crater is a topographic feature centred on a roughly circular 6 km diameter layered gabbro complex. Significant ilmenite, apatite, titano-magnetite and feldspar mineralisation are present in a weathered horizon up to 25 m thick. After several drilling campaigns in the Crater and subsequent feasibility studies, the project was developed by Monto Minerals Ltd, an ASX listed company, in 2007. However, the project never achieved production performance expectations and ran out of commissioning funds. The company subsequently went into voluntary administration in August 2008.In 2009, the RMM Capital group, of Brisbane, took control of Monto Resources Pty Ltd, and renamed the company Belridge Enterprises Pty Ltd (Belridge). Belridge commissioned a redevelopment study aimed at recommencing mining and processing operations. As part of the redevelopment study the authors planned a drilling campaign, managed a quality control program and developed a block model. This paper describes the drilling program, analytical procedures, quality control procedures and the preparation of the block model.The block model for the resource estimate was created using 1 m high blocks, wireframes defining the main material types, and 2.5 m thick horizontal search ellipsoids with a radial pattern. The deposit was ‘flattened’ prior to modelling. To assist with the economic evaluation of the project, each block in the model was assigned a net dollar value based on economic parameters provided by Belridge, including anticipated revenues and costs. This modelling technique allowed for efficient investigation of various scenarios and was used extensively in the development and optimisation of the project’s financial model. At a zero net value per block, comparable to a break-even cut-off grade of four per cent ilmenite equivalent, the Indicated plus Measured resource is estimated at 51 Mt, averaging 4.1 per cent ilmenite, 1.9 per cent apatite and 2.5 per cent titano-magnetite.

Brockman 2 mine is located in the Pilbara of Western Australia and is operated by Rio Tinto Iron Ore. Mineralisation is hosted by synclines where there is structural complexity to focus fluid flow. Mineralisation is hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation. Mining is on 10 m benches and blastholes spaced at 6 - 8 m apart are geologically logged, sampled by shovel cuts, and assayed using X-ray fluorescence for ten chemical variables. Blast blocks are digitised by mine geologists to assign destinations of material within blasts. Resource evaluation drilling is on a spacing of 50 m × 50 m across known mineralisation and consists of recent reverse circulation drilling and older open hole percussion drilling. Sampling of resource evaluation drilling is by rotary splitters or riffle splitters, and assaying is by X-ray fluorescence for ten chemical variables. Ordinary kriging of resource evaluation produces a long-term resource model. This study examines whether mine planning would be improved by using a blasthole estimate to extrapolate grades into deeper benches and merging the blasthole estimate with the long-term model made using resource evaluation drilling. The two estimates are merged into one model using an inverse weighting based on kriging variance. However, reconciliation results in a test bench show the original estimate made using resource evaluation drilling more closely matches mine geology block outs than does the merged model. This is due to a local trend of more high grade and higher iron grades of high grade in the area. The blasthole estimate of deeper benches must use extrapolation and it is diffi cult to take local trends into account. In contrast, the estimation using resource evaluation drilling is mainly interpolation and is better able to handle local trends.

The Zhilingtou Au-Ag deposit is situated in the eastern part of the complexly deformed and metamorphosed South China Caledonian Fold Belt. It consists of seven orebodies that are almost exclusively hosted by biotite plagioclase gneiss of the Precambrian Chencai Group. They form an apparent en echelon pattern in both cross-section and level plan. Three different ore types, based on mineralization textures, have been recognised within the Zhilingtou lode. These are Au-Ag-rich quartz veins, Au and Ag-bearing silicified rocks and Au-Ag-containing altered rocks with quartz stockworks. The mineralisation is principally composed of electrum, argentite, pyrite and minor sphalerite, galena as well as traces of hessite and chalcopyrite plus a gangue assemblage of quartz, rhodonite, sericite and chlorite. Fluid inclusions related to Au-Ag mineralisation yield a wide range of homogenisation temperatures from 110 to 447¦C, with two distinctive peak values at 250 - 300¦C and 350 - 400¦C respectively. d30Si values of quartz veins and silicification from the three stages of mineralisation range from -0.1 to -0.4ë. The mineralisation at Zhilingtou is interpreted as forming by recirculated meteoric water extracting ore-forming elements from metamorphic rocks due to Mesozoic volcano-magmatic activity.

Increased catch bench crest loss has been observed in recent years at Barrick’s Cowal Gold Mine situated in central New South Wales, Australia. A project was initiated to diagnose the cause of the crest loss, and evaluate ways to limit its effect on final walls.A range of different blast measurement techniques were utilised to evaluate the progressive damage caused to catch berms by presplit, production and trim blasts. Techniques employed included; single point vibration measurement, cross-hole seismic analysis, precision berm surveys, horizontal p-wave velocity measurements, crest loss volume calculation and water level changes between blasts.Blast measurements showed that the majority of damage to the catch berm was caused by the presplit blasts, which registered vibrations greater than 700 mm/s at 5 m behind the presplit line. As a result, considerable changes were made to the blast designs after a series of computer simulations via mechanistic blast modelling (MBM). The uncharged presplit collar was increased from 2 m to 4 m, and every second hole was left uncharged. Vibration modelling using a multiple seed wave (MSW) model was used to optimise trim blast delay timing. Burden relief was changed from 16 ms/m to 27 ms/m using one hole firing per 4 ms time window, and the initiation angle was changed from shallow to steep. These changes in the presplit loading and trim timing helped reduce catch bench crest loss by 1–2 m.Trim shots using a high strength bulk emulsion explosive were also identified as contributors to berm damage after analysis of blast monitoring and MBM modelling. The modelling study resulted in the generation of alternative blast designs to minimise the crest loss, including the use of low-density/low-velocity of detonation (VOD) bulk explosive product (Flexigel™ Advantage) in trim pattern designs. This was trialled on the Northern and Eastern pit walls to evaluate the damage to catch berms on final walls. The trials demonstrated that berm vibration was reduced significantly; fragmentation was similar (or slightly blockier) compared to the fragmentation using the old blast designs; displacement of the berm was reduced, so increased catch bench widths were attained. The procedures and equipment used for sampling iron ore process streams have generally improved in recent years. However, there are a number of areas where significant issues still commonly occur, including sampling high capacity streams, sample cutter design and operation, division of primary increments at the secondary sampling stage, the performance of crushers installed to reduce the particle size prior to sample division, and the sample mass that is retained at each sampling stage. These issues of non-conformance with correct sampling principles are caused by factors such as increasing the speed and loading of conveyor belts to increase throughput, which changes the trajectory of the ore stream and may result in an inability of the sample cutter to handle the increased flow rate without sample loss. Failure to sample the entire primary increment stream at the secondary sampling stage is also a common issue as well as failure of crushers to provide crushed products of the required particle size due to ongoing maintenance and/or adjustment issues. Mining One (M1) is often challenged with the task of evaluating deposits considering open cut and/or underground (UG) mining methods. In many near surface deposits a combination of both methods results in the optimum economic means of exploitation. As common as it is to have open pit mines eventually develop into underground mines, theory associated with determining the optimum underground/open pit interface location continues to be subject to refinement. With recent developments in underground software packages, the generation of rudimentary underground mining stopes from basic economic inputs is not only fast, it provides a practical underground mining solution. The determination of the open pit/underground interface is not new to Gemcom's Whittle 4X (Whittle). However, its solution has only ever claimed to be indicative, mainly due the rudimentary nature of how Whittle represents any potential underground mining. The efficient generation of the aforementioned underground mining solution has provided mining engineers with a unique opportunity. Underground mining can now be represented within the Whittle environment to allow the open pit/underground mining scenario to be modelled with increased accuracy. Providing Whittle with the ability to now consider mineable underground stopes combined with the consideration of time value of money (discounting), has delivered a solution with higher credibility than ever before.This paper will elaborate on the potential value gains associated with improved accuracies in the modelling of any potential underground mining in the Whittle environment. Furthermore, it will explain the importance of incorporating time value of money in the optimisation process to provide a consistent solution through to pit selection and final analysis.

In different parts of the world the term epithermal is commonly used for a variety of deposit styles. Using the redox state of the ore-forming fluid (inferred from mineralogy and alteration), the metal assemblage of deposits, and other characteristics, at least five different styles of epithermal deposit can be distinguished. Most of these different deposit styles appear to be related to magmatic fluids, with differences resulting from different compositions of source magmas. The most common style of epithermal deposit (low-sulfidation gold-silver deposits associated with calc-alkaline volcanic rocks) remains the most difficult to explain; the metals in these deposits may be derived by basement leaching without magmatic input, or they may come from magmatic volatiles, with contaminated I-type or S-type magmas as the most likely source.

The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Basically, the suggested integration is essential for sampling trace constituents in the environment, in food, in chemicals and in the pharmaceutical industries.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017. "The demand for fine and ultra-fine grinding associated with the processing of more challenging, finer grained orebodies and the global driver of minimising energy consumption has been an increased focus in our industry. Outotec’s stirred milling technology, the high intensity grinding mill (HIGmill™), was launched in 2012 in response to this industry need. First Quantum Minerals Ltd selected HIGmill™ technology for its Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. The 700 kW mill is grinding copper rougher concentrate to improve copper/nickel separation and copper recovery. Selection of the HIGmill™ followed mineralogy analysis and laboratory and pilot testing for HIG milling in parallel with flotation tests to determine optimum grind size and energy input.The paper discusses the challenges and successes of the test work, manufacture, installation, commissioning and subsequent operation of the mill. Grinding performance is presented and a comparison between predicted and operating energy efficiency is made. Corrosion affects the performance of rock support and reinforcement at various underground mines, including the George Fisher Mine, where recent studies showed that this risk to mining operations is generally not well understood. Corrosion reduces the capacity and life expectancy of ground support and generally is undetected unless the traditional destructive pull out test is employed to detect defect bolts. Where it is still acknowledged that the pull out test has still an important role to play in determining critical bond lengths for static and quasi static ground support designs, it does not provide an underground operation with any reassurance regarding its bolt's integrity, which has been compromised by in situ aggressive conditions. Non-destructive rock reinforcement calibration testing on single and twin strand cable bolts, rebar bolts and friction bolts at the George Fisher Mine enabled the testing team to detect bolts with compromised integrity in one area of the mine. The non-destructive rock reinforcement integrity testing conducted uses a complex 'Stress Wave Analysis' package based on the processing of clear seismic signals imparted into the rock reinforcement element that is being tested. The seismic signals are processed by 'Fourier Transform' into various criteria which can be used to produce models of the element such as mechanical admittance, frequency spectra and velocity which are all being used in the final modelling of the rock reinforcement element under analysis. This paper highlights the enormous potential to effectively manage the geotechnical risk that corrosion presents for an underground mining operation.

A key environmental management issue associated with mining projects is tailing disposal. In high rainfall environments this is particularly challenging and generally requires the discharge of excess water from a tailing dam to adjacent streams or coastal waters. Such discharges can potentially have adverse impacts on downstream water quality and the environmental values associated with these waters, such as providing a drinking water supply for local villagers, maintaining a fisheries resource or protecting a fish species of high conservation significance. An alternative to the construction and operation of a conventional tailing dam is Deep Sea Tailing Placement (DSTP). The key features of such a system are:Discharge of the tailing slurry at considerable depth (approximately 120 - 150 m) below the oceanÆs surface. This requires a pipeline to be laid from the process plant to a mix tank, where the tailing is mixed with seawater and entrained air released. The pipeline then continues down the ocean floor to the required discharge depth, which is below the surface mixed layer and the euphotic zone. After discharge, formation of a density current which continues to descend along the ocean floor as long as the slope is sufficiently steep. Final deposition of the tailing in an area where the slope of the ocean floor is insufficient to maintain the density current. This typically occurs at depths of more than 800 m. Water quality issues associated with DSTP include: Impacts on the oceanic water column due to the formation of subsurface plumes which break away from the descending density current. The occurrence of elevated concentrations of contaminants in the interstitial waters of the deposited tailing solids. Fluxes of contaminants from the tailing deposits into the overlying oceanic water column. This paper discusses the water quality aspects of DSTP with particular reference to a case study in Papua New Guinea. The evaluations undertaken as part of the DSTP impact assessment included consideration of both the short- and long-term chemical behaviour of contaminants and bioassays, within the appropriate water quality assessment framework.
