WHATEVER the outcome of the Industrial Recovery Act, it has currently injected the first hope and optimism into the coal industry for more than a decade. Compared with the recent drab years the results are impressive: Bituminous production for the first ten weeks, 78,000,000 tons, may be compared with 63,000,000 last year; anthracite, 14,600,000 tons and 9,600,000 tons for the same periods, respectively, bringing the heaviest payrolls in ten years with individual checks reminiscent of former boom times. Hurried calls for long deferred new equipment and replacements have stimulated foundry and machine works and the -invigorating effect on the railroads is indicated by the first actual car shortage in a decade. And even in the welter of confusion over code prices, this heavy tonnage has moved at the most profitable figure the coal man has realized for many years, though with the large volume on old contracts, profits were not as large as many think.\

R. C. Shnay (Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa, Ont., Canada)-—The authors are to be congratulated on an interesting and informative paper. However, several questions arise when the isothermal formation of martensite .is considered in relation to the formation of bainite at temperatures near the M, point. The reactions in an alloy and in a plain carbon steel would appear to be comparable; and in the course of a recent investigation of the austenite-bainite transformation in a plain carbon steel,Ia the writer has obtained data at temperatures above and below the M, point. These data are in some respects similar to those of the authors and a comparison would seem justified. The steel used in this investigation had the nominal composition: C, 0.80 pct; Mn, 0.20; and Si, 0.20. The course of the transformation was followed by the use of a magnetic balance. The magnetic moment of the specimen as determined by this instrument is directly proportional to the percentage of the total volume of the specimen which has transformed to bainite. ~lf specimens were austenitized at 1850°F for 4 hr, quenched to the transformation temperature, and quickly transferred to the magnetic balance. Readings were taken at regular intervals until the transformation had stopped. A typical transformation curve is shown in Fig. 9. The preliminary curve preceding the S-shaped curve was found at all temperatures above the M, to around 600°F. Both the extent of this preliminary curve and the time interval between it and the S-shaped curve were found to decrease with increasing temperature as was suggested by Davenport and Bain.14 Therefore,

J. J. Kanter.*—The authors of this paper have demonstrated that at 500°F their alloy will elongate, under appropriately adjusted stress, one or two per cent over a period of 6000 hr. Then they show that after the alloy has so elongated, it will still elongate anothcr 40 per cent if it is tested at ordinary temperature. I should like to ask the authors how much more than 2 per cent over a period of 6000 hr. their alloy will elongate at 500°F. H. L. BuRghofE.—We do not know, because we have not carried out stress-rupture tests on this material. I believe your point concerning the desirability of stress-rupture testing is very well taken. In the material that we have subsequently tested we have not seen any signs of deterioration. We do not know how much further it is possible to go beyond the 2 per cent before finding grain-boundary separation. We have not encountered any under the conditions of the test. W. E. Kingston.†—IS this particular type of copper susceptible to strain-aging, and if so at those comparatively low temperatures, is that going to affect the shape of the curve? By strain-aging I mean the phenomena that certain ferrous alloys show in which the resistance to deformation increases suddenly during the low-temperature creep cycle, apparently due to some precipitation type of reaction, perhaps analogous to hydrogen embrittlement. H. L. BUrghoff.—I believe that this material is not subject to strain-aging of this type. It is very high in copper content, of course, nearly loo per cent. There are some very minor impurities and it carries a small amount of phosphorus, which, unless it is present as an oxide, should be in solid solution well within the solubility limits. A MINING institute open to all men interested in any branch of the mining industry will be held at the Col-lege of Mines, University of Washington, Seattle, during the week beginning March 5. Prospectors, miners, mine owners, persons interested in metallurgy, investors in min-ing enterprises, and the public generally are invited to at-tend. This institute will take the place of the Winter Min-ing Session which originated at Seattle in 1897 and con-tinued for twenty-eight years. The complete new equip-ment of the Mines Laboratory will be used to give demon-strations of new machines and processes of mining, ore dressing, and metallurgy. This year the ceramic industry, including cement and branches of clay working of special Importance in the Northwest, will be included in the insti-tute. All instruction will be given by specialists. Prominent technical men and managers will give lectures on their special subjects. Among the speakers engaged are G. T. Jackson, formerly superintendent of the Alaska-Gas-tineau and the Chichagof mines, who will speak on the mining of large bodies of low-grade ore; R. F. McElvenny, superintendent of the Tacoma Smelter, on the nature of contracts that a smelter can offer to mines and prospects; M. D. Leehey, mining lawyer, on some popular errors re-garding the mining law; H. H. Townsend, on the explora-tion and purchase of prospects by operating companies; J. L. McAllen, on quartz mining in the Willow Creek dis-trict, Alaska; F. Powell, on gold dredging. In the evenings, lectures illustrated by stereopticon views and moving pic-tures will be given. The week will close with an excursion o mines and plants.

The rate of internal sulfidation of austenitic Fe-Ti alloys in H2S-H2 gas mixtures is controlled primarily by sulfur diffusion, with counterdiffusion of titanium playing a minor role. At temperatures below 1100°C, enhanced diffusion along grain boundaries becomes important. The rate of internal sulfidation at 1300°C is approximately equal to the rate computed from the sulfur diffusion coefficient. The diffusion coefficient of titanium in y iron has been determined from electron microprobe traces in the base alloy near the subscale interface. The solubility of sulfur in Fe-Ti alloys has been measured in the temperature range from 1150° to 1300°C. The equilibrium sulfur content is found to increase with titanium content, due to the large effect of titanium on the activity coefficient of sulfur. The Ti-S interaction becomes stronger as the temperature decreases. TITANIUM as an alloying element in stainless steels is an effective scavenger for interstitial impurities, carbon in particular. Titanium is known to form stable sulfides; however extensive thermodynamic data on the Ti-S system are not available. Schindlerova and Buzek1 have shown that the Ti-S interaction in liquid iron is moderately strong. There have been no previous studies of the Ti-S interaction in solid iron. Internal sulfidation of Fe-Mn alloys was the subject of a recent investigation by Herrnstein.2 He found the rate of internal sulfidation to be an order of magnitude greater than predicted from available solubility and diffusivity data. A satisfactory explanation for the discrepancy could not be given. In the present study, the solubility of sulfur in austenitic Fe-Ti alloys was measured using a standard gas equilibration technique. Fe-Ti alloy specimens were also internally sulfidized. The rate of internal sulfidation was measured as a function of temperature and alloy composition. Supplementary electron micro-probe measurements were made to provide additional information on the nature of the internal sulfidation process. EXPERIMENTAL The starting materials were alloys containing 0.12, 0.24, 0.38, and 0.54 wt pct Ti. The alloys were made in an induction furnace by adding titanium to electrolytic iron that previously had been vacuum-carbon-deoxidized. The major impurity in the alloys as determined by chemical analysis was carbon. The carbon content of the alloys averaged about 100 ppm; metallic impurities were presented in concentrations of 50 ppm or less. Specimens were made in the form of flat plates, 0.03 by 2 by 4 cm for the equilibrium measurements and 0.5 by 1.5 by 3 cm for the rate measurements. The experiments were performed in a vertical resistance furnace wound with molybdenum wire and containing a recrystallized alumina reaction tube. In the gas train, flow rates of the reacting gases were measured using capillary flow meters. The source of H2S was a mixture of approximately 2 pct H2S in H2, which was obtained in cylinders from the Matheson Co. A chemical analysis was provided with each cylinder. The H2-H2S mixture was diluted with additional hydrogen to obtain the desired ratio of H2S to H2, and the resulting mixture was diluted with 30 pct Ar to minimize thermal segregation of H2S in the furnace. Argon was purified by passage over copper chips at 350°C and subsequently over anhydrone. Hydrogen was purified by passage over platinized asbestos at 450°C and then over anhydrone. The H2-H2S mixture was purified by passage over platinized asbestos and then over Pas. The samples used in the solubility measurements were analyzed for sulfur by combustion and iodometric titration. The subscale thickness in the internally sulfidized samples was measured on a polished cross section, using a microscope with a micrometer stage. Electron microprobe traces for titanium in solution were made on several samples that had been internally sulfidized. A Cambridge microanalyzer was used, and the known titanium content at the center of the specimen was used as a calibration standard. The procedure for the microprobe measurements will be described further when the results are presented. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Equilibrium Data. Fig. 1 shows the sulfur concentration as a function of gas composition for three alloys equilibrated at 1300°C. The dashed line is based on data published by Turkdogan, Ignatowicz, and pearson3 for pure iron. The breaks in the curves are the saturation points for the alloys. The fact that the initial slope decreases with increasing titanium content indicates that titanium interacts strongly with sulfur in solution. To obtain information on the composition of the precipitating sulfide phase, the measurements described in Fig. 1 were extended to higher sulfur partial pressures. These results are shown in Fig. 2. (The initial portions of the curves are reproduced from Fig. 1.) The highest PH2s /pH2 ratio used is believed to be below the ratio required for the formation of a liquid sulfide phase. Time series experiments were used to study the approach to equilibrium in the samples. It was found that equilibrium with the gas phase was reached in less than 4 hr at 1300°C.

THE practice of fine-grinding is now being so successfully - carried on in some fields, notably in West Australia, and its advisability has been so frequently pointed out' that the matter in this paper is not put forward as being new ; its chief object being to call attention to the importance of fine-grinding in the treatment of comparatively low-grade ores. I have been engaged during the last five years in the cyanide-treatment of ores in the Ohinemuri district (North Island), New Zealand, and I consider that, in the near future, extremely fine-grinding (almost sliming) will become a very important feature of the milling-methods in this field, since it seems absolutely necessary to reduce the most of ores to a very fine state of division if a high extraction is to be obtained; and, in most cases, the extra percentage of saving will leave a good margin above the increased cost of treatment due both to the fine-grinding and to the interest on the capital spent for the grinding-machinery. The average ore of the Ohinemuri field is composed of a quartz-gangue with some calcite, carrying the gold-value in the form of an alloy of gold and silver in about equal proportions, and the silver-value in the form of mixed sulphides of silver, usually associated with a considerable amount of iron pyrites. In the upper levels, the ores are decomposed and carry large quantities of black manganese oxide and some iron oxide, but, as. depth is reached, the decomposed ore gives place to sulphides and, in some mines, rhodonite, manganese silicate, is present in fairly large quantities. An address before the Meeting of the New York Section, Nov. 4, 1914. As life advances one is inclined to look backward instead of forward, and the vista over which my memory carries me has been filled with such a shifting panorama of changes in metallurgy that the whole practice of the art seems to have been re-created. The first cupola furnace that I saw in operation was at one of the group of mines at Capelton, Quebec, from which the Nichols company still draws some of its sulphur supply. At that time it was operated by a Hartford, Conn., company, under a General Adams. When its small brick furnaces made a campaign of a week and smelted 10 tons a day, the feat redounded to the credit of the operator. The introduction of the water-jacketed cupola dates forward to the next decade. I was using one in Pennsylvania, making copper matte, to the horror of a noted metallurgist, who could not conceive it possible that you. could bring fused sulphides in contact with steel without rapid corrosion. In our ignorance we were doing what seemed to be an impossibility, and it is just that recklessness and disregard for precedent which has characterized so much of the work of American metallurgists, and carried us forward at such headlong speed. Once the water jacket was accepted as the type of the. copper cupola, its almost unlimited expansion in length, but not in width, was a matter of convenience rather than of skill. In Butte the cupolas have been enlarged by adding furnace to furnace. The first reverberatories which I saw in operation were those in Professor Hill's Black Hawk establishment, where the concentrates from the Gilpin County gold mills were run down into matte for separation in England. Sixty dollars per ton was the usual deduction in those days before gold and silver was paid for. Smelting was done with wood as fuel, and the capacity of the furnace was about 10 tons per diem. Shortly after this Professor Hill formed an alliance with Richard Pearce, who was running what, if I recollect aright, was called the Swansea Works, at the bend of the river approaching Georgetown.

The growing importance of screening makes an accurate measure of the quality of a sizing operation desirable. Screen efficiency is considered equal to the percentage of true undersize in the feed obtained as undersize from the screen. This method is unreliable, as it gives the same credit for removing minus 200-mesh material as for removing material just able to pass the aperature of the screen. A more accurate measure of screen efficiency is to consider only the work done on the "difficult" grains, that is, those grains of which the intermediate diameters closely approach the screen aperture.. The application of this method is given, together with the derivation of formulas and an example of their use. Is AN accurate measurement of the efficiency of a screen under a given set of operating conditions valuable? If so, what is the efficiency; of, a screen and how can it be measured? Sizing, especially of the finer sizes of material, has increased in importance in the development of flow sheets as a result of the perfecting of the rapid vibrating screens. More consideration should be given screens in the preparation of ball-mill feed, where they permit the admission of a dryer feed than, the classifier. Where possible, the introduction of a screen ahead of the primary ball-mill, and the diverting of ore below, say, 4 mm. to a secondary mill, might result in a greater overall economy because of the thicker feed and the better, adjustment of crushing media and mill operation to the reduction demanded. With the present trend back toward a combination of gravity methods and flotation, rather than flotation alone, the accurate, economical sizing possible with the new screens makes fine jigging a method to be considered. W. 0. Borcherdt1 and John Bland2 discuss the screening problem and also the value of close sizing in the concentration of some of the rare-metal ores. If a screen is to be used, it should be selected in competition with others; other things being equal, that screen which makes the cleanest oversize should be preferred. On account of the possibility of isolating carbides in steel it is generally assumed that the electrode potential of iron carbide is more noble than that of ferrite.1,2,3,4,5 Differences from 0.032 V1 to 0.4 V4 have been recorded. However, it is important to realize that the more noble behavior of cementite in relation to ferrite is not an issue of thermodynamics but of reaction kinetics. Theoretically, cementite is less noble than ferrite, which is a direct consequence of its thermo-dynamic instability. (Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910.) I. INTRODUCTION. TEH object of this paper is to show how igneous intrusion is governed by definite mechanical laws. A distinction is made between dikes and fissures, and the various characteristics of intrusions are explained on an exact scientific basis. The modification of rock-stresses by intrusion is then considered and extensive isostress regions are recognized. Finally, a complete classification of intrusions is constructed covering all pos-sible cases. The generalizations of observed data, taken from Geikie's Textbook of Geology, conform to the laws of intrusion herein stated, and the deductions based upon these laws. No authority, however, is quoted for the type which I have named a corrugated intrusion. Its existence is a necessary deduction from the laws of intrusion, and even the entire absence of examples in technical publications cannot disprove its reality. In all probability, corrugated fissures would have remained undiscovered, but for the working of mineral veins. As intrusions of tabular form are seldom worked for commercial purposes, it has been left for theory to anticipate the discovery of corrugated dikes. In the light of these laws of intrusion and the corresponding laws of fissures,1 there seems to be a remarkable uniformity of stress-distribution in rocks at moderate depths. This renders .possible the mathematical calculation which should help us to approximate exact science in this and kindred branches of applied geology.

When a metal solidifies, gas, initially present in solution, may be concentrated at the grain boundaries, leading to brittleness, or it may form solid compounds which, if localized at the grain boundaries, impair the properties. On the other hand, the solid compounds formed sometimes distribute themselves more or less uniformly, and hence may be relatively harmless. If metallic oxides are heated under a partial oxygen pressure less than that corresponding to the dissociation pressure of the oxide in solution in the melt, they will decompose and oxygen will tend to be eliminated from the melt. This paper presents data on the partial oxygen pressures of copper and nickel oxides over a wide range of temperatures; it also presents data regarding the amount and nature of the gases evolved in the vacuum melting of a 3500-kg. charge of nickel-chromium alloy and gives test values indicating the improvement in impact values ascribed to vacuum melting. The results of commercial experience with a 4-ton vacuum melting and casting furnace indicate that this method entails an increase in cost of about 10 cents per pound of ingot over orthodox practice, which may be justified for special products and may be lowered if hot metal is charged into the vacuum furnace. DISCUSSION (Howard Scott presiding) J. H. ScafF, New York, N. Y. (written discussion).—In the section of Dr. Rohn's paper describing the effect of melting -metals in vacuo, he says, "In this way plain copper, nickel and iron may be easily purified. For example, vacuum-melted copper does not contain any oxygen and for this reason it is never sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement." This statement is contrary to the results of our experiments at the Bell Telephone Laboratories on the effect of vacuum melting on the properties of copper. Several 150-gram samples of tough-pitch copper were melted in a vacuum of the order of 1 X 10-5 to 1 X 10-6 mm. Hg for 2 hr. The yield and fracture characteristics of a Ti-8 pct A1 alloy have been examined at room temperature as a function of exposure temperatures to 1700°F. Em-brittlenzent of the alloy is observed to occur following exposures below 1280°F, the critical temperature for formation of ordered Ti3Al particles. Presence of Ti3Al particles results in an increase in the yield and flout stresses which, for a given exposure time, are a maximum at the critical temperature. Embrittlement is attributed to the occurrence of plastically induced fracture controlled by the increase inflow stress. This interpretation is compatible with the decreasing ductility and increasing crack popagation rates observed with increasing exposure time below the critical temperature. Slip line observations and measurements of the gain size dependence of the yield stress indicate that the slip character of the alloy is not influenced by exposure treatments below the critical temperature. ThE potential usefulness of Ti-A1 alloys in structural applications has prompted considerable interest in studies of their microstructure and mechanical characteristics. The relatively recent surge of interest in the system and at the same time its complexities are indicated by the fact that despite numerous recent efforts14 there has not even been general agreement upon a phase diagram for the system. However, most of the Ti-A1 alloys of commercial interest range in aluminum content from 5.0 to 8.5 wt pct where most investigators achowledge the existence of the ordered Ti41 phase. Goldak and parrs confirmed the existence of Ti41 from X-ray diffraction analysis of the stoichiometric composition while Blackburn6 has determined its presence in commercial Ti-8 pct A1 alloys by electron diffraction analysis and dark field transmission microscopy. The embrittlement of Ti-8 pct A1 alloys was initially reported by Crossley and carew7 who showed that aging in the temperature range of 750" to 1110°F resulted in extreme brittleness. This behavior was later confirmed and correlated by Soltiss to the presence of long-range order in the commercial Ti-8 pct Al-1 pct Mo-1 pct V alloy (Ti-8-1-1) which exhibited anomalous creep and yield strength behavior at 950°F. This investigation was designed to study the mechanical characteristics of a binary Ti-8 pct A1 alloy in order to further examine the nature of the embrittlement behavior reported for the alloy system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Ti-8 pct A1 binary alloy was obtained from the Wah Chang Co. in the form of 0.050 in. sheet. The chemical composition of the alloy is given in Table I. Heat-treatment of the alloy was conducted in evacuated vycor capsules for the tensile sDecimens (1.25 bv 0.25 in. gage section) and in evacuated stainless steel jackets for the crack growth-rate panels. All specimens were annealed at 1700°F for 24 hr and water quenched before an exposure at elevated temperatures. Tensile testing was conducted at room temperature in an Instron testing machine equipped with a pushbutton control for instantaneous control of the cross-head motion. In this manner the change in stress, Aa, accompanying an increase in strain-rate by a factor of 10 was measured immediately after yielding. The crack growth-rate panels used were 3 by 18 in. with a precrack 0.33 in. long cut into the center of the panel. The panels were cycled at a maximum gross stress of 40,000 psi at a maximum to minimum tension stress ratio of 20. Cycling of the specimens was continued until the crack propagated the width of the panels. The crack length was intermittently measured during slow crack growth. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Correlation of Embrittlement to the Critical Temperature for Ordering. Blackburn6 has found that the critical temperature, T,, for the formation of Ti41 in a Ti-8 pct A1 alloy with an interstitial content on the order of that given in Table I is approximately 1245°F. THE 127th meeting of the Institute was held in New York, Feb. 19 to 22, 1923. In addition to the usual large volume of technical matters under consideration, the meeting was particularly noteworthy for the amount of attention given to its business session; the convention of local section representatives also was full of interest. The total registration was 1201. The annual business meeting on Feb. 20, President Dwight presiding, was attended by 125 members, who listened with marked attention to the reports and addresses of the several officers. The chairman departed from the stipulated order of business in order to allow more time for the presentation of remarks on the state of Institute affairs. The previously pub-lished reports of the officers were accepted, as printed. On the report of the tellers, the following officers were declared elected: E. P. Coal preparation practice and trends follow, among other factors, production trends in any given area. Considering an area the size of a state, some broad predictions may be made after a review of the annual production records. As this paper is concerned with coal cleaning in Utah, data on its production record are pertinent. Table 1 shows the percentage relation of coal production in Utah to the national total as a single figure up to 1935 which includes all recorded production. From 1935 through 1947 these data are presented by years. It is evident from these data that the production of Utah coal is ascending. The reason for this trend is industrial growth in the West resulting in a population shift which accounts for more people than the normal increase would supply together with Utah's relatively fortunate geographical location and its abundance of good-quality coal. Utah is also hopeful of supplying more coal in the future for West Coast power generati0n.l

While the advantages in the use of high-line siliceous slags in lead smelting which Mr. Bretherton discusses in this paper are obvious under certain economical conditions, he gives me credit for the introduction of such slags when it does not belong to me. It is true I did considerable experimental work, off and on, for the purpose of finding such slags, while at the Germania in 1877 and 1878, but I did not have occasion to introduce any such slags for regular work, because I had no ores which fitted the economical conditions for using high silica and high lime, except in isolated cases for very brief periods. On the contrary, the ores I had to treat were mostly very ferruginous and very low in silica, so that, economically, I was compelled to run nearly always on slags, which allowed me to use the abundant flux I had without cost. It was August Raht who first had occasion to establish and use for long periods a slag high in silica and line, and low in iron. This was when he was confronted with the task of smelting the. Horn-Silver ores at the smelting works at Franklin, Utah, with as little expenditure for fluxing material as possible. I was at that time in Leadville, Col., where, in the new works I had built, the Billings and Eilers smelters, I had occasion to use profitably many slags, but never anything as high in the earthy bases and in silica as Mr. Raht had to use.
