The DIAGRAM computer program has been used to develop stability diagrams such as Eh-pH, log [CNI-pH, and log [Me]-pH for the systems Me-CN-H 0 where Me = Au, Ag, Fe, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co. More complex 2 diagrams involving sulfur- and arsenic-containing species are also presented. With the aid of these diagrams, a discussion is presented of the solution conditions (e.g. pH, [CN], [CNS], Eh) vhich influence gold and silver extraction in cyanide solutions. Special emphasis is given to the effects of ore minerals or calcination products, such as pyrrhotite, pyrite, arsenopyrite and hematite on gold-silver dissolution. Application of the stability diagrams to solution treatment operations such as cementation is also indicated.

THIS paper is not the result of recent research with regard to any particular feature of iron metallurgy, blast-furnace practice or mechanical engineering. It is rather a series of notes with regard to contemporaneous progress in blast-furnace construction and operation, together with some suggestions as to changes and improvements that seem to be desirable. On April 1, 1930, a committee of the Chicago District Blast Furnace and Coke Association presented to that association a rather ambitious study of blast-furnace equipment, together with recommendations for the design of construction of a complete blast-furnace unit for the production of 1000 tons of pig iron per day. This report represented the result of months of study by members of the committee, all of whom were actively engaged in operation or design of blast-furnace plants. It is natural, therefore, that comments on the present state of the art should take this 1000-tons furnace, as recommended by the Association, as a basis for comparison with corresponding features of construction or design. See Table 1. In looking through this report at the present time, the significant difference is in the nature of the gas-washing equipment that today would be specified. In other respects, the installation would remain generally very much as it was outlined in 1930. The change in furnace dimensions would be very slight and of no especial significance, except with respect to changes in stock-line diameter, of which more will be said hereafter. The high-efficiency stove as developed by various designers is thoroughly described within this report, and few changes have taken place since. Blowing equipment shows refinement and reflects the improvement in steam engineering. In 1961 it became increasingly more evident that significant technological changes must be made in minerals beneficiation. The status quo in technology in today's competitive markets will not be tolerated. Higher productivity, greater recoveries and newer and better products must be sought and incorporated with lower operating costs. In other words, "when you build a new mill, don't build an old mill." Recommended reading for proof of the vital necessity of new methods and techniques is in the September 1961 issue of MINING ENGINEERING. The article by one of MBD's cherished and true veterans, E. H. Rose, is entitled "Iron Ore: The BIG Picture". Because of new beneficiation methods for iron ores, nearly 47 million tons of plus 60% iron concentrates will be produced and another 40.1 million tons of capacity will be under construction or committed. Thus in a relatively short period, 87 million tons of this high-grade iron concentrate with record low silica will be available. As Mr. Rose also points out, "in gross tons, without allowance for better grade, this is the equivalent of almost exactly two-thirds of all iron ore used for all purposes in the U.S. and Canada in the peak years of 1953 or 1957." Needless to say, improved mineral beneficiation methods have had far more reaching effects than just the production of higher grade iron concentrate.

A considerable amount of work has been reported in the literature in regard to the texture and earing behavior of copper strip. The rolling texture of copper has been confirmed as (110) [112] and (112) [111], which yields ears of a drawn cup at the position 45" from the rolling direction.1-3 The recrystallization texture has been established as the cubic or (100) [001] texture, where the earing positions are at 0" and 90" to the rolling direction.4-8 It has also been reported that in the development of cubically aligned grains of copper strips, the percentage of this cubic texture increased with an increase of final reduction and final annealing temperature.8,9 A comprehensive study on H.C. copper (British commercial copper of high-conductivity quality = Cu 99.95 pct, O2 0.03 pct, Ag 0.003 pct, Fe 0.005 pct and Pb < 0.001 pct) was made by Cook and Richards.6 They concluded that the recrystallization textures could be described as one or more of the following textures: (1) a single texture (100) 10011, (2) a twin texture (110) [112] and (3) a random orientation, depending upon the previous history of the specimen concerned. The effect of various alloying additions in copper was reported by Dahl and Pawlek.10 They found that certain alloying additions, such as 5 pct Zn, 1 pct Sn, 4 pct Al, 0.5 pct Be, 0.5 pct Cd, or 0.05 pct P suppressed the formation of cubic texture. Brick, Martin and Angierll reported that the cold rolled textures due to various additions fitted a rather simple pattern. However, the recrystallization textures were subject to very considerable variations. In the discussion of this paper, Baldwin stated that deoxidized copper containing 0.02 pct P gave a complicated recrystallization texture at lower temperature. When this copper was annealed at high temperature, a single texture appeared which was described as (110) [ill] but. according to a pri- vate communication from Baldwin, this orientation reported was in error and should have been reported as (110)[112]. He also reported that the earing positions of drawn cups were at 60" to the rolling direction.12 Recently, Howald, in his discussion on the paper by Hibbard and Yen,13 reported that the rolling texture of phosphorus deoxidized copper, containing from 0.006 to 0.020 pct phosphorus, was of the pure copper type. When these coppers were annealed at lower temperatures, they exhibited a random orientation, and when they were annealed at higher temperatures they had a mixed (111)[110] and (100)[001] texture, depending on the severity of the final reduction and annealing temperature. However, the specific influence of phosphorus and other impurities on the recrystallization textures and the deep drawing properties of copper strip has not been thoroughly reported. Therefore, an attempt has been made in the present work to determine the rolling and recrystallization textures and also the earing behavior of five types of commercial copper and thereby to evaluate the effect of phosphorus and some other significant impurities on the development of texture for cold reductions of about 87 to 89 pct. Materials Used The five types of copper employed in the present investigation were two phosphorus deoxidized coppers of different phosphorus content (0.007 and 0.013 pct P), an oxygen-free copper (OFHC), an electrolytic tough-pitch copper, and a fire-refined tough-pitch copper. These materials were subjected to a thorough spectroscopic and chemical analysis. The designations and the chemical compositions were as shown in Table 1. The coppers, FA1, FA2 and FA3. were hot-forged from 3-in. billets into a ½ X 6-in. plate and cold rolled to the ready-to-finish gauge indicated below. FA4 and FA5 were hot rolled and scalped to ready-to-finish gauge. The grain size of all the materials in the ready-to-finish condition was about 0.030 to 0.045 mm. Table 2 shows the last stage of the production schedule for each copper strip used. Experimental Procedure ANNEALING, GRAIN SIZE AND HARDNESS DETERMINATIONS Specimens of each type of copper were finally annealed in air for periods of one hour at temperatures ranging from 300 to 1600°F and were subsequently cooled in air. The average grain diameter of the annealed specimen was estimated by comparing with a standard grain size chart. Hardness was determined on the Rockwell 15 T scale. CUPPING TESTS Cups were made in a blanking and drawing set, in which blanks of 2-in. diam were drawn to a cup of 1.25-in. diam with an average depth of about 0.75 in. The clearance between the punch and die was about 0.032 in. The ears of the cup were measured with a special fixture which read the height of ears to one-thousandth of an inch on every ten-degree interval along the circumference of the cup. POLE FIGURES The usual transmission diffraction method with unfiltered copper radiation was employed to determine the pole-figures of the specimens cold-rolled or annealed at 900°F. THIS investigation was undertaken to determine, if possible, the relation between static and dynamic tensile tests as measured by the work required to break test specimens slowly, in a tensile testing machine, and rapidly, by means of a falling weight. LUMINESCENCE of rare-earth-doped materials has been a subject of interest for the past 20 years. Within the past few years there has been a considerable increase in rare-earth research motivated in search of new and more efficient laser materials and also due to the use of certain-rare-earth compounds in the preparation of color television screens. The purpose of this study has been to seek an understanding of some of the basic processes involved in exciting the rare-earth luminescence which is associated with transitions within the 4f shell of the trivalent rare-earth ion. Single crystals of ZnS doped with a variety of rare-earth ions have been prepared by vapor-transport technique described elsewhere.&apos; Photoluminescence was excited by a high-pressure short-arc mercury lamp together with suitable glass and chemical filters. For electroluminescence, sinusoidal and pulse excitations were used. 1) ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS 1.1) V-I Measurements. Electroluminescence experiments were performed on crystals of terbium-doped ZnS. The samples were cleaned and etched and indium or In-Ga alloy contacts were alloyed on by heating in H2 atmosphere to 600°C for times ranging up to 10 min. Static voltage-current measurements were made on several samples. Fig. 1 shows the results for a typical sample. For voltage V < 20 v, the V-I relationship is linear giving a resistivity of 2.5 x 109 ohm-cm for this particular sample at room temperature. In the range of 20 to 250 v, I varies as V "3 and at still higher voltages (when electroluminescence is visible to the scotopic eye) current varies as Vs up to 600 v, all at room temperature. At 77"K, for V > 200 v, / I vge5 up to 1000 v. The V-I characteristics at room temperature follow reasonably well the behavior predicted by Lampert&apos; for one carrier space-charge-limited current in an insulator with traps although, as shown later, the expression derived by Lampert2 for the threshold for trap-filled law behavior Vtfl yields an unrealistically low value for trap density if we use the experimental value of 300 v for VtfL. Assuming the case for shallow trapping, the transition from Ohm&apos;s law behavior to space-charge-limited behavior occurs at voltage Vtr given by where no = thermally generated free carrier density, L = length of the sample, e = static dielectric constant, 6 = ratio of free to trapped electron densities, e = electron charge. For the ZnS:Tb crystal, L = 0.5 mm, E = 8.3 €0, Vtr - 20 v, and no = 5 x 10&apos; per cu cm, calculated from the ohmic behavior assuming electron mobility of 100 sq cm per v-sec. This results in 9 = 0= As more and more electrons are injected the Fermi level moves up in the forbidden gap toward the conduction band. If we assume a single-energy level for traps (which is not strictly correct, as we will show later), the current voltage characteristic is profoundly affected when the Fermi level crosses the trap level. The traps are now filled and injected carriers can no longer be immobilized in traps. Hence, current rises sharply with voltage. The transition from space-charge-limited behavior to the trap-filled behavior occurs at voltage VTFL given by

The rate of reaction of hydrogen sulfide with ferrous sulfide was studied by measuring the initial rates of sulfidation of iron strips in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen-argon mixtures at 670°, 800°, and 900" C. The time-dependent surface sulfur activity is derived from the instantaneous rate of sulfidation with the assumption that diffusion in the sulfide layer is in a pseudo-steady state with the gas-sulfide chemical reaction. The rate of sulfur transfer from hydrogen sulfide to the surface of iron sulfide is proportional to the partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide and inversely proportional to the activity of sulfur at the surface of the sulfide layer. The derived rate equation is based on the assumption that most of the surface sites on the chemisorbed layer of iron sulfide are occupied by sulfur atoms and that the slow rate-controlling reaction is the dissociation of hydrogen sulfide on the chemisorbed layer. The experimental results are in reasonable accord with this reaction model. 1 HE slow approach to parabolic growth rate in the sulfidation of iron in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixtures is a manifestation of slow approach to surface equilibrium between the gas and the surface of the sulfide layer. For example, at 800°C and Fig. 7 in Part I, the parabolic growth rate begins after approximately 1 day of sulfidation time. With decreasing temperature and decreasing partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide, the time necessary to reach gas-sulfide surface equilibrium is much longer. These observations are similar to those reported previously by Turkdogan et al.&apos; on the oxidation of iron to wustite in hydrogen-water vapor mixtures. The slow approach to gas-sulfide equilibrium is well-demonstrated by the results in Fig. 1 where the square of the weight gain per unit area, ( g S per sq cmI2, is plotted against time for gas mixtures having PH g//>H = 1.0 with 0, 25, 50, and 67 pct Ar at 800°C. The value of 1.5 X lo-&apos; (g S per sq cm)&apos; corresponds to almost complete sulfidation of the iron strip (- 0.05 cm thick) to iron sulfide. The points fall on S-shaped curves. If the inflection parts of the curves are considered to be linear, thus indicating parabolic growth rate and the establishment of gas-sulfide equilibrium, their slopes would have to be the same for a fixed ratio in the gas mixture. Such is not the case, and the slopes for the "linear" parts of the S-shaped curves are lower than the value when gas-sulfide surface equilibrium is established. The subject matter of this paper is the kinetics of the surface reaction of hydrogen sulfide with iron sulfide during the early stages of sulfidation of an iron strip. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The apparatus and materials used were the same as those discussed in Part I. In the present experiments of relatively short duration, a purified iron strip, 5 by 2 by 0.05 cm, which was suspended in the uniform hot zone of a vertical zircon tube, reacted with a flowing gas mixture of hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen-argon. The sample was suspended from a gold chain attached to a calibrated silica spring. The amount of sulfur picked up by the iron, which formed a layer of iron sulfide, was determined by measuring the displacement of a reference point on the silica spring, using a cathetom-eter. In all cases, the degreased sample was first annealed in a stream of oxygen-free dry hydrogen for several hours to remove any impurities such as oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon which might have been present on the surface of the sample.&apos; The rate measurements were carried out at 670°, 800°, and 900° C in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen-argon mixtures with pH2 s/Ph2 ratios from 4 to 0.1. In a few experiments of short duration no sulfur deposition was observed in gas mixtures with (comments concerning sulfur deposition at high pH s/ph ratios were made in Part I.) Typical examples of the results obtained are shown in Fig. 2 for two temperatures and two gas compositions. THE transformation temperature of hafnium from hcp to bcc is 1750° + 20 °C in contrast to previously published values by Duwez and fast2 which are believed inaccurate. The Bureau of Mines determined this value by measuring the temperatures at which a sudden decrease was observed in the electrical resistance of hafnium alloys containing up to 18 at. pct Zr, and then extrapolating the temperatures to 0 pct Zr. Duwez1 previously reported a transformation temperature of 1310°C, obtained by use of a rapid-cooling thermal-analysis technique. Later, Fast2 published a much higher value of 1950° 100°C based upon: a) his own determination of 1690°C for the beginning of the transformation range for hafnium containing 5.7 at. pct Zr, and b) his belief that lattice parameters reported3 for Duwez&apos; hafnium indicated i contained 19 at. pct Zr and that the 1310°C value should be associated with that composition. Russell4 subsequently stated that Duwez and Fast probably were reporting their lattice parameters in different units and reassigned a value of 6.0 at. pct Zr to Duwez&apos; hafnium. If this assumption were true, Duwez&apos; hafnium was of approximately the same purity as Fast&apos;s, but his transformation value was considerably lower. The reason for this divergence is not known. Fast&apos;s value for hafnium containing 5.7 at. pct Zr agrees well with our data. McGeary5 determined a transformation value of 1660°C by metallographic examination of heat-treated specimens, but the zirconium content of his hafnium was not definitely established. The specimens used in this investigation were 1/8-in.-diam rods 6 1/2 in. long, fabricated by hot-swaging bars cut from arc-melted buttons. Studies such as the investigations into the solubility of gases in crude oil under various conditions, which have been carried on during the past three or four years, are very interesting from an academic point of view, but this consideration alone is hardly sufficient to warrant the large contributions from the industry necessary to maintain them. Some definite benefit to the industry as a whole should be forthcoming. The purpose of this paper is to direct the attention of company engineers, and company executives, to some of the ways in which the information gained from these studies can be made directly profitable. This work has two principal economic aspects. One affects the investment budget, and through it the financial requirements of the companies. The other affects operations, and through this course is reflected in current earnings. It will be shown that, as a direct result of the investigations into gas solubility, undertaken in the recent past by various investigators, it is now possible: 1. To determine more accurately the amount of reservoir oil originally present. 2. To obtain closer control on operating conditions, to effect more economical recovery. 3. To predict earlier and more dependably when and how much surface lifting equipment will be needed. 4. To reduce, or entirely avoid the very large investment in gasoline recovery equipment now frequently found necessary. 5. To control the gravity of the pipe-line oil so as to secure the greatest possible revenue from the products of the well. 6. To effect the recovery of a large amount of gasoline now wasted while the practicability of a gasoline recovery system is being decided. 7. To plan operations, by comparison with the history of old properties operated without this new information, so as to avoid the mistakes of ignorance made in the past. These points will be discussed in the following pages, though not necessarily in the order stated. There is so much overlapping of the points themselves, and of the data from which they have been drawn as conclusions, that to treat them in any particular order would require

As far as technology is concerned there has been no development in Bolivia during the year 1936, because the country, just emerging from the war with Paraguay, is only beginning to rebuild its economic foundations. Great steps, however, are being taken in order to secure a rapid and sound development of its oil resources, as follows: 1. The new Petroleum Law, which contemplates the problem of proration and conservation of natural resources, prohibiting the wasteful use of gas, and regulating the number of wells, their spacing and the permissible output per well, for each particular pool according to the conditions prevailing therein. 2. The creation of an official entity with the object of developing and exploiting a large petroliferous area. This entity has been called Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales Bolivianos (Y.P.F.B.), and the region assigned to it is all the sub-andean zone, which is approximately one hundred miles wide and borders the eastern part of the Oriental Andean range, from Argentine to Peru. It is said that drilling will be started immediately in various localities. At the present time a wide geological survey of part of the area is being made in order to find out which regions offer the best possibilities of commercial development. Y.P.F.B. has been authorized by the Government to draw up contracts with private companies for the exploitation of limited zones. Production The only company that has been producing in the country in 1936 is the Standard Oil Company of Bolivia, and only from two of its fields: Camiri and Sanandita. New wells were not drilled. During the first nine months of the year 12,762,958 liters (80,275 bbl.) was produced, 34,985 bbl. from the Camiri field and 45,290 bbl. from the Sanandita field. Reports for October, November and December are not yet available. The total for the year 1935 was 25,978,737 liters (163,388 bbl.).

TO assist the mining industry in attacking problems of water control, the U. S. Geological Survey has begun a program of research in mining hydrology. In certain fundamental respects water control is similar to development of water supplies from wells or to the drainage of agricultural lands, as many of the tools developed in recent years for quantitative ground-water problems are applicable, with modification, to mine-water problems. In 1952 a 30-day pumping test conducted jointly by the Eureka Corp. Ltd. and the Defense Minerals Exploration Agency provided an opportunity to gain knowledge concerning water movements around a flooded mine shaft. The methods of analyzing the data may be used as a guide for the evaluation of similar problems elsewhere. The Fad shaft of the Eureka Corp. is on Ruby Hill, 1 1/2 miles west of Eureka, Nev. The shaft was completed at a depth of 2465 ft in November 1947 at a site adjacent to the downfaulted block in which the ore was found. As the drift on the 2250 level progressed toward the ore zone, a large flow of water was encountered after the Martin fault was intersected. This flow exceeded the installed pump capacity, and an unsuccessful attempt to recover the shaft and the 2250 level was made in 1948.1, 2 Geology and Hydrology: The complex structure of Ruby Hill is that of an anticline broken first by thrust faulting and later by normal faults. The present orebody comprises several mineralized zones within a block of the Eldorado limestone of middle Cambrian age which was downfaulted 1400 to 1600 ft, and it may be related to a similar body mined at a higher level south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the depth of the largest zone of ore the block is roughly rectangular in shape, about 1000 ft wide and 1500 ft long, and dips about 30" NE, see Fig. 1. It is apparently bounded on the south by the Ruby Hill fault, on the east by the Jackson fault, on the north by the Martin fault, and the west by the Bowman fault. Within the block, but between the Ruby Hill and the Martin faults, are the Office and Adams Hills faults; west of the block and the Bowman fault are the Albion and Spring Valley faults. There are many conflicting reports concerning the water-yielding characteristics of the Eldorado limestone and the condition of the fault zones, that is, whether they are open or tight. However, the diamond-drill records indicate that open spaces as much as 2 or 3 ft across were encountered, and considerable cementing and lining of holes was necessary to maintain circulation of drilling fluid. There is also evidence that the Eldorado limestone was cavernous where it was mined in the early days south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the site of the Fad shaft the formations encountered from the surface down included the Pogonip limestone, Dunderberg shale, Hamburg limestone, and Secret Canyon shale. These formations did not yield large quantities of water to the shaft. The Pogonip limestone, which appears to be permeable and might yield water elsewhere, is above the water table in the vicinity of the shaft. The Secret Canyon shale, immediately overlying the Eldorado in some places but in most places separated from it by the Geddes limestone,3 is apparently tight and does not transmit water. During the 30-day test period the shale briefly confined the water in the underlying formations so that artesian conditions were observed in drillholes E and F, which are cased into the Eldorado limestone, whereas unconfined conditions were observed in drillholes B, C, and D, which were open to the shale. The Geddes limestone, which normally lies between the Secret Canyon shale and the Eldorado limestone, was not encountered in the Fad shaft. The Geddes, a flaggy, fractured limestone, is reported capable of yielding large volumes of water. Water stored in the interstices of this thin-bedded limestone within the Ruby Hill fault zone on the 1200 level of the Locan shaft drowned the pumps in 1923 when the Richmond-Eureka Mining Co. attempted to explore the area along the fault. Eldorado limestone was not encountered in the Fad shaft. In the ore-block area the Eldorado limestone was not entirely offset from other water-yielding formations by movement along the Bowman fault; therefore it may be hydraulically connected with the other formations. Adjacent to the Ruby Hill, Jackson, and Martin faults, the Eldorado lies in contact with other possible water-yielding formations. One of these, the Prospect Mountain quartzite, is separated from the Eldorado by thin, sheared, and broken beds of the Geddes within the Ruby Hill fault zone. A limited examination by the author of the Prospect Mountain quartzite in the Richmond mine at a higher level and south of the Ruby Hill fault indicates that the quartzite is poorly permeable. The monzonite mass south of the quartzite would be a further barrier to the flow of water. The poor permeability of this area is substantiated by records of levels at which water was encountered south of the Ruby Hill fault. In view of the normally low rate of ground-water recharge, if this desert area had been permeable, water levels could not have been maintained at altitudes of many hundred feet above the present water table west and north of Ruby Hill. Thus the ore-bearing block of Eldorado limestone is in contact with possible water-yielding rocks on at least two sides, and if the fault zones are possible conduits for water circulation the geologic and hydrologic conditions are suitable for the infinite-aquifer type of analysis as used and modified here. History of Pumping: During sinking of the Fad shaft a maximum pumping rate of 1500 gpm kept the shaft dewatered sufficiently, but in March 1948, after the 2250 level drift passed through the Martin fault into the Eldorado limestone, the pumps and shaft were flooded. In the Philippines, where distances are spoken of in terms off fight time, the Sipalay copper mines are two flight hours southeast of Manila on the island of Negros. After landing at the airport in Bacolod, it is then 170 km (106 milers) by surface transportation to Marinduque Mining and Industrial Corp.&apos;s expanding copper operation. While copper deposits were discovered in the area in 1936-and one mine, the Binulig, began operations soon after-it wasn&apos;t until 1956 that stripping at Sipalay and construction of a 4000-t/d (4400-stpd) mill began. The mill went into operation in May 1957, and the first shipment of copper concentrate was made three months later.

WE HAVE come a long way since the time of the old steel master who declared that chemistry would ultimately bring the steel business to ruin. Yet I sometimes doubt whether even now we fully recognize the great debt we owe to the institutions that today are initiating young men into the fascinating mysteries of science and training them in the art of engineering. I am not sure that we recognize the importance of the contribution that the schools of applied science and the technical colleges are making to our industrial economy. That contribution is neither narrow nor restricted. It covers the whole range of industry. Dr. Compton, himself, has shown in his survey of leading American corporations that the engineer is twelve times more likely than the nonengineer to become president, five times more likely to become treasurer, and thirty times more likely to become an officer. So the hand of the engineer not only is all-powerful in the laboratory and in the drafting room but his control is increasing in all departments of management.

Data from the International Mineralogical Association - Commission on Ore Microscopy data card file have been used when available. The program displays the number and type of data matches for each mineral found, displays their chemical components, and allows the range to be narrowed or widened for each of the identification properties for repeated searches, if desired. ORE.ID is much more rapid, allows for the use of more identification properties, and involves more ore minerals than any previous identification system.

ANTHRACITE ALTHOUGH the unmined anthracite will last for approximately 150 years, most of the thicker and cleaner coal beds have been almost entirely first-mined and pretty well robbed, leaving much of the present and future production to come from thin and dirtier beds. Herewith is a section of one of the dirty beds being mined in the Wyoming region [ ] This section shows that 45.8 per cent of the bed is made up of impurities and that the 45 in. of coal in the bed is in five benches, the thickest of which is 19 inches. In some localities of the anthracite region there are 14 beds of minable coal. Orderly and proper mining of the coal makes it necessary to rob or second-mine-almost all beds have already been first-mined-in sequence from the top downward. Therefore the robbing of the few remaining portions of the thicker and cleaner beds is in many instances being held up by the mining of the overlying thin and dirtier coal beds. Impurities Impurities consist of fire clay, slate, rock, and bone. The latter, which is black, contains 40 to 60 per cent carbon and often resembles good coal. In some beds there are also bands of "blue" coal, which, as the name implies, is of a bluish slaty color. Although much of this "blue" coal has a carbon content almost as high as the good anthracite, it is not

THE year 1930 resembled the preceding one in the coal industry in continuing the era of falling prices and &apos;of the abandonment of unprofitable mines. Practically all coal prices fell, and in the steam sizes during the last half of the year this was particularly true, due to the small industrial demand. No new mines of any size were opened in the bituminous coal industry, but there was a steady increase in the number of cleaning plants of all kinds built in all fields. It is estimated that at least nine million tons per year were added to the previous total of washed coal. The largest washing plant started during the year was that of the Buckeye Coal Co., at Nemacolin, Pa., with a capacity of 650 tons per hour. Fig. 1 shows - the mixing-bin, conveyor galleries, washing-plant and skip hoist, and Fig. 2 the 120-ft. Dorr thickener for collecting the 48-mesh material from the wash water. Dryers are used for drying the steam coal product. The following statement by J. R. Campbell shows the effect of cleaning on Pittsburgh coal in Greene County: "With the advent of the 650-t.p.h. efficient washing plant in Greene County at the Nemacolin mine of the Buckeye Coal Co., it has undoubtedly been demonstrated that the potential coking-metallurgical coals of the county can be brought within the pale of the highest grade high-volatile coals for steel manufacture. A few months&apos; operation indicates that 9% per cent ash in the raw coal can be easily reduced to under 7 per cent ash in the washed coal and the sulfur from 1.60 per cent in the run of mine to 1.20 per cent sulfur in the washed coal.

Extrusion of aluminum alloys in this country is performed mainly by direct extrusion, therefore this paper is confined only to factors affecting the rate of extrusion by this method. Many factors affect the rate of extrusion of aluminum alloys. It is the purpose of this paper to present a discussion on the factors that are subject to technical control. Most of them are closely related, so that a clear-cut distinction between them is rather difficult. However, an attempt will be made to evaluate the effect of each factor separately, as far as possible. The most important factors only will be considered, and these will be discussed in detail under three general headings: (I) characteristics of the equipment, (2) size and structure of the ingot, and (3) temperature of ingot, cylinder, and other parts. It is a well established fact1 that the pressure and the speed of extrusion are related and are exponential functions of one another. Therefore, whenever a certain condition tends, for instance, to increase the pressure required for extrusion, it will reduce the extrusion speed if the pressure is maintained constant. For this reason, in this paper the effect of various conditions is expressed either in regard to their effect on the pressure required or the extrusion speed. Another established fact is the relation- ship between the temperature of the material being extruded and the pressure required to extrude. According to Schi-shokin,= this relationship is of the exponential type, and as the temperature is increased the pressure required is decreased. It would seem from the preceding that the greatest rates of extrusion can be obtained by the use of higher temperatures. However, as is well known, other factors intervene to limit the rate of extrusion of aluminum alloys when increasing the temperature. These factors will be discussed in detail later. Characteristics of the Equipment The capacity of the press determines * the maximum unitary pressure that can be applied for any given cylinder diameter. Pressures used for extrusion of aluminum alloys range from approximately 50,000 lb. per sq. in. to 150,000 lb. per sq. in., dependent upon the alloy and the size of the shape extruded. Higher pressures could be used to advantage, but existing steels limit pressures employed in the production of extrusions. Numerous mechanical characteristics of the extrusion press affect extrusion rate. The most important characteristics of the press itself are: (I) sensitivity of the main pressure valve and accuracy of pressure gauges, (2) accuracy of equipment to heat the cylinder uniformly and to control cylinder temperature, and (3) accuracy of means of measuring the speed of extrusion. Investigations were conducted at two underground locations, foreman&apos;s room and 5702 area, of the Kermac Nuclear Fuels Corp. uranium mining installation, Ambrosia Lake, New Mexico. The rock environment is stratified sandstone. Pressures were varied from minus 0.4 an Hg to plus 3.8 cm Hg with respect to barometric pressure, and were maintained for periods ranging from several hours to 21 days. One cm Hg overpressure (-1.5% of normal barometric pressure) produced a 20-fold decrease in Rn flux into the foreman&apos;s room as compared to the Rn flux observed during dilution ventilation. The 5702 area experienced a 5-fold decrease in Rn flux for a similar overpressure. During 21 days of continuous 1 cm Hg overpressure in the 5702 area this reduced Rn flux was maintained. The smaller reduction in flux for the 5702 area results in part from the proximity of the foreman&apos;s room to a non-pressured area and the presence of an impermeable shale lens overlying the ceiling of the 5702 area. A 0.4 cm Hg underpressure of the 5702 area increased the Rn flux into the area by 3-fold over the non-pressured value. A barometric pressure influence on Rn flux into the mine and on air Rn concentrations in non-pressurd areas of the mine was measured. A falling barometric pressure causes an increase in the flux of interstitial gas into the mine; a rising barometric pressure decreases this flux. These effects are not seen in overpressured mine areas. Radon concentrations in rock interstices show, during overpressure, decreases of all locations monitored except in the immediate vicinity of the shale lens above the 5702 area ceiling. These reductions are the result of air flowing from the mine into the rock interstices under the influence of the pressure gradient induced by the overpressure. The relative humidity of the 5702 area was reduced after 2 days of 1 cm Hg overpressure from a pre-overpressure value of 96% to 81%. The control of harmful or noisesome gases which emanate into underground mining areas from surrounding rocks is often a costly necessity. In uranium (U) mines this problem is presented by the high interstitial concentrations of radon-222 (Rn), a radioactive noble gas of 3.82-day half-period, formed in the decay scheme of U238, and the relative ease with which this noble gas diffuses from its parent rock into the interstices of the rock and then to a working area. Long-term exposure to moderate concentrations of Rn (3000 µµc per 1) and its short-lived alpha-ray emitting daughter products, RaA (Po218) and RaC (po214), has been found to result in an increased incidence of bronchial carcinomaa2 The acceptable limit of Rn daughter products in a mine atmosphere is presently set at a concentration of short-lived radon daughters which would be in equilibrium with 100 ppc of Rn per 1 of air. Ventilation of mines is conventionally accomplished by continuously diluting the mine air with fresh air brought in by fan or natural convection from above ground surface. The diluted air is allowed to vent freely to the atmosphere. This process does nothing to retard the rate at which gases (including Rn) diffuse into the mine from surrounding rock. It merely reduces the concentrations of these gases within the mine. It is suggested that in a sufficiently permeable rock environment a slight pressurization of the mine air may induce air flow from the mine into the interstices of rock surrounding the mine. The convective flow of comparatively fresh air will reduce the concentration and the concentration gradient of undesirable gases in the rock interstices adjacent to the mine. Radon will diffuse counter-current to this convective flow at a rate proportional to its concentration gradient. In time, a steady state of convection and counter diffusion will be established. The Rn flux into the mine will never be reduced to zero, and will only asymptotically approach zero as the overpressure (and hence the convective velocity of purging air) approaches infinity. During 1963 and 1964, an investigation into the effect which such applied pressures have upon the Rn characteristics of a mine atmosphere was conducted at the Kermac Nuclear Fuels Corp. uranium mines, Ambrosia Lake (near Grants), New Mexico.
