The recrystallization behaviors of two extruded and cold-drawn experimental sintered aluminum powder alloys, containing 1.75 and 3.0 pct Al2O3 by weight, were compared with that of extruded and cold-drawn commercially pure alumirzum. The kinetics of recrystallization of the alloys are described semiquantitatively. For the alloy containing 1.75 pct A l203 the rates of nucleation and of growth were also semiquantitatively determined. THE most striking property of aluminum alloys strengthened by a dispersion of Al2O3, the so-called SAP alloys, is their stability at elevated temperatures. One of the manifestations of this stability is their resistance to recrystallization after they have been cold worked. Most of the commercial grades of either the Swiss SAP or of Alcoa's Aluminum Powder Metallurgy Products have not been recrys-tallized after cold working, even when they are heated for a long time at a temperature near the aluminum melting point. Lenel, however, observed that the dispersion strengthened aluminum alloys with a larger spacing between the oxide particles than that of most commercial grades would recrys-tallize.1 It appeared to be of interest to further investigate the mode and kinetics of recrystallization of these alloys, and to compare their recrystallization behavior with that of commercially pure aluminum. Because homogeneous deformation of these SAP alloys in tension did not provide sufficient cold work to induce recrystallization, they were cold worked by wire drawing; the nonuniformity of this deformation unavoidably complicated the interpretation of the recrystallization studies. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Extrusions—Two types of sintered aluminum powder extrusions were used in this study. One type, designated AT-400, was produced from Reynolds atomized aluminum powder consisting of spherical particles averaging 3µ in diam and containing 1.75 wt pct of Al2O3. This powder was very similar to the R3M powder from which extrusions were previously prepared with an average spacing of 0.9µ between oxide particles.2 The second type, designated MD 2100, was produced from Metals Disintegrating Co. flake powder containing 3.0 wt pct of Al2O3, with an average flake thickness of 0.8µ. The average spacing between oxide platelets in MD 2100 extru- sions was 0.45µ.2 Powder compacts of 3/4-in. diam were extruded at 1000°F into 0.097-in. diam (AT-400) and 0.093-in. diam (MD 2100) wires by methods previously described.3 In order to compare the recrystallization behavior of sintered aluminum powder extrusions with that of wrought commercially pure aluminum 3/4 in. rod stock of 1100 F aluminum was extruded at 1000°F into 0.102-in. diam wire. Wire Drawing—Tungsten carbide dies were used for the AT-400 and 1100 F alloys. They had an included angle of about 15 deg and reduced the wire area approximately 7 pct per pass. Steel dies with an included angle of 11 to 13 deg and an average reduction per pass of 10 pct were used for drawing the MD 2100 alloy, because drawing this alloy through the carbide dies produced overdrawing defects. Heat Treatment—The cold-drawn wires were cut into small samples, and the deformed ends were etched off. The samples were each wrapped tightly in a single layer of aluminum foil, and individually isothermally annealed in a lead bath. Metallography—The modes and kinetics of recrystallization were determined by metallography. Mounted and polished specimens were anodized in a solution of 1.8 pct HBF4;4 examination under polarized light clearly revealed their grain structures. The recrystallized grains were generally much larger than those of the unrecrystallized matrix, and could clearly be distinguished because they alternated between maximum and minimum light reflection when the microscope stage was rotated, while the unrecrystallized matrix had a comparatively homogeneous "salt and pepper" structure. The fractional recrystallized volumes of the dispersion hardened alloy wires were determined by cutting and weighing of recrystallized and total transverse areas on photomicrographs. The recrystallized grains in the 1100 F alloy were too small to be cut out individually; therefore a combination of cutting and lineal analysis was used in this case. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Modes of Recrystallization—The modes of recrystallization of the three alloys varied widely. A method has been developed for evaluating acid treatments in fractured limestone fields by breaking down pressure drawdown into three component parts: (I) pressure differcntial across "skin" near the borehole face, (2) pressure differential due to flow resistance in the coarse communicating fissures and (3) pressure differential between the fine voids and the coarse fissures. It is apparent that in most successful acid treatments the first term, skin resistance, has been reduced or eliminated. Further, it is often possible to estimate the volume of coarse fissures associated with the second term, coarse fissure flow resistance. In cases where this volume is comparable with practical acid volumes it seems likely that this resistance also may be attacked with a suitably retarded acid. INTROD UCTION Acid treatment has been successfully applied as a general practice in the limestone wells in the Mara/ Maracaibo districts of Venezuela for some 10 years. At the same time the need has been felt for a more precise method of: (1) evaluating the effect of an acid job and (2) selecting wells which should benefit from an acid treatment. The following method, based on an analysis of build-up curves for wells producing from fractured limestone, provides a means of forecasting the effect acid will have on a well and in many cases the probable order of production rate increase which may be expected. In certain cases it is also possible to calculate the fissure volume through which the acid has to be displaced for best results. Various approximations are introduced in the method, but within the limitations of these the analysis gives an indication of how a well, whether previously acidized or not, may be expected to respond to acid treatment. Suitable build-up curves cannot be obtained on "tight" wells which do not give sustained production and the method is not applicable to such wells. Figs. 1 through 7 illustrate various types of build-up curves obtained from limestone wells in Western Venezuela. Curves are included showing (1) both skin and coarse fissure resistance, (2) skin resistance only, (3 and 4) reduction of skin resistance by acidization, (5) fissure resistance only, (6) reduction of coarse fissure resistance by acidization, and (7) acidization failure. This theory has been successfully applied for over three years during which 22 acid treatments have been carried out specifically to reduce skin resistance and three treatments to reduce coarse fissure resistance. The method has been found to be a useful aid in the selection of wells for acidization.

THE history of flotation in America is very short, at least as far as the large-scale application of the process is concerned. It is remarkable how many important developments have taken place inn the last few years and are already being extensively utilized. What was new a year ago, seems almost commonplace now. For this reason it is with hesitation that I follow the suggestion: of Dr. Ricketts, President of the Institute, to describe the experiences of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. with the flotation process. TESTS CONDUCTED IN SMALL TEST-MILL When the Inspiration company first decided to build a concentrating plant, nothing was known about flotation, and the process was to be gravity concentration pure and simple. Demonstration Tests Conducted by Minerals Separation Co. While plans were being prepared by H. Kenyon Burch (who had been intrusted with the design and construction of the concentrator) the Minerals Separation Co., a concern at that time little known in America, asked and obtained permission to demonstrate the value of its flotation process for Inspiration ore. As. a consequence, a small 50-ton flotation machine of standard design was added to the company's test plant and started to operate in the beginning of 1913. This marks the beginning of flotation at Inspiration. The results obtained with this machine, which was operated by members of the Minerals Separation staff, so far surpassed what this company anticipated that it was decided to continue flotation tests for this purpose, and two of the flotation experts of the Minerals Separation Co., I. L. Greninger and G. A. Chapman, were retained. L. R. Wallace, now superintendent of the Miami works of the International Smelting Co., was at that time metallurgist of the Inspiration company and in that capacity took an active part' in these tests. Great credit is due to him for his quick recognition of the possibilities of flotation.

DURING the past twelve years the underground shaft of the United States mine at Bingham has been sunk an additional 2000 ft. with stations and pockets cut every 200 ft. without interrupting the mining of 600 tons of ore per day and the advancing of 1500 ft. of development per month. Following is a brief description of the way the joint work is conducted. The vertical underground shaft is a three-compartment shaft with outside dimensions of 6 ft. 4 in. by 15 ft. 6 in., and inside dimensions for each compartment of 4 ft. 2 in. by 4 ft. 8 in. The manway compartment of the main shaft is used as the hoisting compartment in sinking operations; it is partially lined with 2 by 12-in, lagging and a bucket is used without guides or crosshead. Preparatory work includes the placing of a bulkhead in the manway compartment, 60 ft. above the lowest station or level, the installation of a hoist, a head sheave, a fleet sheave, a-signal system, air and water lines, and a trap door for handling waste.

I. INTRODUCTION. THOSE who deem the subject of this paper an old and super¬seded one may recall with advantage the words of the great proverb-maker, bidding us to seek the new in the ashes of the old. The manufacture of wrought-iron began with the small hearth built upon an eminence, and relying on the wind for blast. Next came, either the hearth about 12 in. in diameter by 2 ft. in height, blown by a man operating two goat-skins for bellows, or, a hearth of greatly varying diameter and about 10 ft. high, depending for its blast upon natural draft. The former appeared in India, the latter in Burmah; and both were in operation until quite recently, though their origin is lost in prehistoric times. The Catalan forge was the evolutionary descendant of the foregoing, and the parent of the Blase-ofen, which in turn led to the high bloomary or " Stückofen," the father of the blast-furnace, as a producer of cast-iron. The production of cast-iron checked the growth of the direct processes; and led to the introduction of various hearths, such as the Walloon, for low-silicon irons; and the South Wales process, combining the run-out fire with the finery, for higher-silicon irons. Some of these are still in operation in localities possessing the necessary raw materials; and their product is used for purposes requiring wrought-iron of exceptional quality, the supply of which is still smaller than the demand. We have to look back but a century and a quarter to see the introduction of the puddling process by Henry Cort; a process which, reinforced by the iron-oxide bottoms and fettling of Hall, was not less revolutionary in character, and more revo-

Appropriately termed the Silverton Project, Standard's operation has now passed the half-way point in its program to reopen two mines that were once sizeable producers of copper, lead, and zinc ores.

Fox the past fifty years or more, the structural features of the Cordilleran mountain system of western United States have presented some most interesting problems. Any geologist or engineer living in this region, or even making occasional examinations. of the mines, will lose much of interest and importance if he is not familiar with the literature. Some of the greatest works on geology have been the, result of studies carried on in sections of this region. Among the more important of the earlier works are those of Dutton,1. King,2 Gilbert,3 and Powell;4 of the more recent Lindgren,5 Ransome,6 Spurr,7 Butler,8 and others have contributed much. Many of the papers are largely of scientific interest but even these lay the foundation for the commercial application of the broader features of the geology. I have read many of these works with the keenest interest and pleasure; in fact, some have been read until some of the more important findings seem to be my own. In this paper, however, it is my aim to accept credit for little more than the labor of assembling some of the ideas of others. WITHOUT in any way detracting from the credit due those engineer-miners of copper who operate with power shovels, it may be said that compared with block-caving underground their work is simplicity itself. True enough, ingenuity and foresight of high order are required to lay out an open-cut operation to the best advantage; good organization and intelligent care and use of machinery are required to achieve minimum costs. But really successful undercut block-caving demands all this; and, in addition, it requires a conception and application of unseen natural forces that reflect a type of genius that is rare. Assuming that preparatory work has gained access to the orebody, mining of whatever kind consists essentially of three operations: 1. Breaking the ore "in place," as Nature left it, into pieces small enough for convenient handling. 2. Loading these pieces into some kind of a vehicle on wheels. 3. Transporting the broken ore to some central plant on the surface where the process of extracting the valuable metals can be commenced. In shovel mining, dynamite and steam or electric power are used-with remarkable efficiency, be it said-to accomplish each of these three processes. In underground-caving methods the old force of gravity is called upon to accomplish, in large part, processes 1 and 2. To do this with success is an artistic achievement of a sort. Put it another way. The earlier methods of underground mining constituted a translation of surface procedure to an underground theater. BY August 1944 Canada expects to be shipping 56 percent hematite ore from its new Steep Rock iron mine, via Port Arthur on Lake Superior, to the steelmaking centers in Canada and the United States. This is indeed welcome news to steel men, especially if they operate open hearth furnaces, as the Steep Rock ore is a high-grade lump and will be valuable as charge and feed ore. But better news is the fact that this first big producer of high-grade hematite ore in Canada, since the exhaustion of the Helen mine in the Michipicoten area north of Lake Superior in 1918, has a proved ore body of 16,757,000 long tons and a probable ore body of 14,000,000 long tons, thus giving an over-all total of 30,757,000 long tons and assuring production for a number of years to come.

THE formal outline of Mr. Hague's life and work is embraced in the following statement, chiefly based upon data furnished by him, at my request, shortly before his death. At that time the probability that I would survive to record his death was apparently small; but I urged upon him the duty of providing, whether for me or for my successor as Secretary of the Institute, trustworthy material for the notice which somebody would some day have to write-and which might otherwise be incomplete or incorrect. Mr. Hague, with characteristic promptness and freedom from affectation, did what I asked of him; and I am therefore . able to present an authoritative sketch-concerning the details of which I shall add my own comments, and some particulars obtained from others of his personal friends. James Duncan Hague was born Feb..24, 1836, at Boston, Mass., where his father, Rev. William Hague, D.D., an eminent clergyman, then resided. After a preliminary, education in private. schools, be studied in 1854 at the, Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University; in 1855 and 1856 at the University of Göttingen, Hanover; and from 1856 to 1858 at the Royal Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony. In 1859-1861 he was attached as chemist to a South Sea exploring expedition, sent by W. H. Webb, of New York, to examine Jarvis, Baker, and other islands for phosphate-deposits. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he entered the U. S. Navy, serving for a year as Judge Advocate to the fleet stationed at Port Royal, S. C. In 1863 he became Superintendent of the Albany and Boston copper-mine, in the Lake Superior region, where he was also connected with the earliest development of the Calumet and Hecla property. "Cement" means binding agent or glue. It is derived from the Latin word "Caementum," the name of a limestone, chips of which were used in mortar more than 2,000 years ago in Italy. During the middle ages "cement" or "cement" generally denoted mortar. Today it means any binding material. The Thomas Register lists nearly 200 classifications for "cement" including automobile cement, household cement, rubber cement, etc. The material most commonly associated with this word, however, is portland cement which, when mixed with water and allowed to hydrate, is a ceramic binding material used to cement aggregates (crushed stone, gravel and sand) together in "concrete," the most universally used building material of today. It is estimated that more tons of concrete are used annually than all other building materials put together including steel, lumber, gypsum, bricks, tiles, aluminum and glass. Its use in foundations, building construction, sanitary work, dams, railroads, and highways, makes it difficult to conceive of modem civilization without concrete. A survey made in October 1955 showed the following uses of portland cement: [Percent Highways20 Nonresidential buildings20 Residential buildings15 Military construction10 Sewer and water works8 Public utilities10 Other (conservation, farm, and maintenance and repair)17 100] As of today, the percentage for highways is probably even higher. Ceramic binding materials have unquestionably been used in construction work for thousands of years. The mortar between the blocks of the great pyramids was calcined gypsum (plaster of paris). The use of calcined and slaked limestone goes back earlier than the Roman Empire. Gypsum, however, is relatively soft, and common lime mortar is not "hydraulic," i.e., it does not harden under water. The Greeks and Romans discovered later that an addition of a finely divided active siliceous material (Santorin earth or Pozzolana) would react with slaked lime to form a stronger, and hydraulic, cement. The Appian Way in Italy, Colosseum, and the great Aqueducts built by the Romans were made with this type cement, and some of these structures are still in existence today. However, not until 1756 did some serious research result in the development of better cements. In that year the English engineer, John Smeaton produced a stronger cement by burning a limestone containing considerable proportions of clayey impurities. Other investigations and improvements were made by Bryan Higgins, Bergmann, Joseph Parker, L. J. Vicat, J. F. John, James Frost, and I. C. Johnson.2 Traditionally, but perhaps unfairly to others, the invention of the prototype of today's portland cement is credited to the English mason Joseph Aspdin who in 1824 obtained a patent and gave the product its name, because in color the mortar produced from it resembled a natural building stone obtained from the British Isle of Portland. The contributions of Johnson and Aspdin were primarily the important step of preparing a synthetic mixture of lime and clay without depending on raw materials found in nature which might contain such elements in desirable proportions. Mining and Metallurgy of Lead and Zinc, AIME Vol. 121, edited by Dr. C. R. Hayward in 1936, remains a document of importance today even though 34 years have passed in the meantime. Since nothing in this world seems to be permanent, however, and progress brings new and better ways to do things, a two-volume set has just been published to bring the state of the art of 1936 up to date. This two-volume set, Mining and Concentrating of Lead and Zinc and Extractive Metallurgy of Lead and zinc, incorporates the papers to be presented during the Proceedings of the 1970 World Symposium on the Mining and Metallurgy of Lead and Zinc. The Symposium is being held October 20-24, 1970, in St. Louis, a site near to the famous Lead Belt of southeast Missouri. Some eighty papers are bound in these two volumes covering exploration, geology, mining, concentrating, roasting, smelting, electrolytic processing, residue fuming, refining, etc. All of this is laced with data on tonnages, processes, assays and efficiencies obtained, and the man-hours and equipment needed to achieve these performances.

The sheet-ground deposits of the Tri-State district, because they are fairly uniform in thickness (7 to II ft.)—rather flat, with an easy dip to the west—and cover a large acreage, offered a problem of improved transportation. Heading advance in this kind of mine is very rapid and track haulage requires a larger crew of trackmen than do other mines, and a heavy investment in track. The use of some type of rubber-tired truck equipment for underground haulage was under consideration for some time by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The nature of some ore bodies made them not adaptable to truck haulage and some mines that did offer possibilities were equipped with other types of haulage, and the expected savings by the use of trucks did not offset the loss of investment that would be incurred in discarding other equipment. The decision was made to sink a new shaft, designed for skip hoisting, on the Blue Goose ore body, and then develop truck equipment. Developing Tractors and Trailers A study was made of internal-combustion engines for power units in the tractors, but the extreme difficulty of controlling air circulation, and the heavy cost of drilling large churn drill holes for blower installations, led to the adoption of a tractor with a storage battery. The storage-battery tractor that was on the market for mine haulage was impossible to obtain because all were needed for defense work. Several standard electric-truck chassis were purchased and rebuilt in the Eagle-Picher shops. The steering wheel was shortened and set vertical, permitting the driver's seat to be moved forward, and the frame was shortened enough to take the battery box and the fifth wheel support that carried the gooseneck of the dump trailer. The fifth wheel, or turntable, is of the ball and socket type. Tig. I shows the ball fastened to the gooseneck. The socket is split to permit introduction of the ball and is held by through-bolts, and the socket is welded to a ½-in. plate, which in turn is attached to the tractor frame. Smaller wheels and tires were put on to reduce over-all height. If it had been necessary, the spring: could have been reversed, or taken off entirely, to gain additional clearance. The tractors are equipped with 48-cell, 23-plate, 400-A.H. batteries. With the initial tonnage and mileage, the batteries were about 50 per cent down at the end of a shift. Tractors have truck tires 7.50 by 20, 8-ply, front and rear, the rear being dud. After four months of use, the .tires are beginning to show signs of failure.* In

13.9-1. Introduction. Any mining venture or project is undertaken with a view of gaining some benefits, which, with the modern limited corporation, means earning a return to the stockholders for the use of their funds. Thus, any manager, when confronted by an opportunity of expending funds, must realize that the funds should generate a satisfactory return. The problem then becomes one of how the manager should best expend, if he should expend, funds for opportunities that become available to him. In the evaluation of a mineral property, or of a project within an operating mineral property, there must be cognizance of the fact that the final return is dependent on many factors that are not present in other industries. The primary factor in mining operations is the orebody, which has a diminishing life. This diminishing life gives the decision maker a range of choices; for by expending more capital for a larger plant, he can work the deposit out in a shorter period (16). This may, in fact, maximize the return on the investment. Alternatively, he may wish to maximize the total profits, a course which usually requires a lower capital investment and allows a longer working life for the deposit before final depletion. Other factors that have great importance in the evaluation of mining projects are the taxation treatment of mining profits from the viewpoint of depletion, depreciation, and investment credit. Investment opportunities involve expending funds at the present time in return for future benefits. These future benefits have a degree of risk in that the annual amounts of benefits and their duration cannot be fore- cast accurately. The treatment of risk in economic analysis involves the quantification of the degree of variability of the expected future benefits and also of the initial capital expenditure. Mining geophysics in 1969 marked a year of growth and consolidation in the application of ground and airborne geophysical methods and techniques with a 20% rise in expenditures for world-wide exploration. Growth was determined by questionnaire survey of industry, geophysical contractors, universities and government agencies conducted by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Relative position of metlhods is shown in the accompanying table on page 87. Methods and Techniques Electromagnetic airborne and ground methods showed the largest gains in the utilization of VLF-EM instrumentation. The VLF-EM instrument is a directional radio receiver which is tuned to distant radio transmitters in the 15 to 25 kilohertz band range. It measures vertical real and imaginary components of the magnetic field vector, and is used in geological mapping and surveying for various types of conductors in the ground.
