The following analysis was stimulated by a previous article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev., which describes a method using formulas especially devised to calculate flow potential of extensive aquifers characterized by relatively even porosity and permeability throughout. The present discussion submits that the method was unsuitable for solving the kind of problem occurring at Eureka, where the amount of water available, rather than the flow potential, may have been the vital factor. IN an interesting article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev.,1 W. T. Stuart describes how a difficult water problem, or one phase of it, may be evaluated by means of a small scale test. Test data are plotted by a method rendering, under certain conditions, a straight-line graph that can be projected to show how much the water table will be lowered by pumping at any specified rate for a given time. A formula is then used to determine the size of opening, or extent of workings, necessary to provide sufficient inflow to enable pumping to be maintained at that rate. At first glance this might seem the answer to a miner's prayer, but a word of caution is in order. It may not be the whole answer. Moreover, results obtained by the method described are reliable only for conditions approximating those assumed. Even where conditions do not meet this requirement, however, it may be possible to draw helpful inferences from the results, perhaps enough to facilitate another approach to evaluation of a problem. The two formulas Mr. Stuart used, the Theis formula and the one developed from it by Cooper and Jacob, were given field checks a number of years ago in valley alluvials by the Water Supply Div. of the U. S. Geological Survey and found to be reliable when the aquifer is very large in horizontal extent and sufficiently isotropic for the test well and observation wells to be in material of the same average permeability as the saturated part of the aquifer as a whole." Extensive valley alluvials, sands, and gravels can be evaluated in this way, and there are even cases in which the method could apply to porous limestones, such as flat beds of very large areal extent that have been submerged below the water table after extensive weathering. These are sometimes prolific sources of water for towns and industries. It is necessary for them to have been above the water table for some geologically long period of time in a fairly humid climate before submergence because the necessary high porosity and permeability, and large reservoir capacity, are the result of weathering, that is, of solution by the carbonic acid (H,CO3) in rainwater formed by the absorption of CO, from the air by raindrops, and this dissolving action must cease when all the H2CO3 has been consumed by re- action with the carbonate to form the more soluble bicarbonate. Consequently this weathering process is largely restricted to a zone that does not extend much below the water level, and submergence is necessary after the weathering to provide large reservoir capacity and good hydraulic continuity. On the other hand, water courses tend to form along faults and fractures in limestone, and to become enlarged by solution, well below water level when, as often happens, fresh meteoric water is circulated rapidly through them to considerable depth by hydrostatic pressure, as through an inverted syphon. Although the reservoir capacity of such water courses is relatively small they may extend far enough to tap more prolific sources. Cavities, and sometimes caves of considerable size, are found in limestones where the acid formed by the oxidation of sulphides has attacked them. This action can take place as deep below water level as surface water is carried by syphonic or artesian circulation, because the oxygen it carries in solution will not be consumed until it reacts with some reducing agent, such as a sulphide. Moreover, the formation of acid and solution of limestone in this way is not confined to the immediate vicinity of the sulphide. Oxidation of pyrite, for example, results in formation of acid in several successive stages, each taking place as more oxygen becomes available, as by the accession of fresh water into the circulation at some place beyond the sulphides. When the acid thus formed attacks the limestone, CO, is liberated and the ultimate effect of the complete oxidation of one unit of pyrite will be the removal of six times its volume of limestone as the sulphate and bicarbonate, both of which are relatively soluble. The reaction may be continued or renewed along a water course far from the site of the sulphides, where the small electric potential produced by contact with the limestone helped to start the reaction. Mr. Stuart refers2 0 caves in the old mining area in the block of Eldorado limestone southwest of the Ruby Hill fault at Eureka, Nev., and to the cavities encountered in drillholes in the downthrown block on the other side of the fault. Although he interprets these cavities as evidence that this formation was sufficiently isotropic (evenly porous and permeable) to give reliable results by the method he describes, they may, in fact, be entirely local conditions. Brief Economic History of Quicksilver in the United States Quicksilver ore was first discovered in the United States at what was later the New Almaden mine in California, in the year 1824. Production also began here, but not until 1850, when it was stimulated by the active demand caused by gold-mining operations. Prospecting for quicksilver was active, high-grade ores were found and ample production lowered the price from $100 per flask in 1850 to about half that figure for the greater part of the next 10 years. During the succeeding decade, many new quicksilver mines were found; production increased at a time when the local demand diminished, so that most of the product was exported. The third decade of quicksilver mining in the United States witnessed the development of the pan amalgamation process, particularly in Com-stock silver-mining operations. A suddenly increased demand sent prices soaring, the all-time peak of quicksilver production followed, and the highest price was soon replaced by the lowest one on record. Huge quantities of quicksilver were exported between 1870 and 1880 and exports continued in decreasing measure for three decades to 1910. In

INTRODUCTION Tailings dams up to about 200 ft. high are proposed to store tailings for a major mining operation on Marinduque Island in the Philippines. The original design of the dam utilized a compacted laterite starter dam followed by hydraulic placement of cycloned sands to form slime retaining dykes along the outer face of the dam. The upstream method of construction was proposed. In view of the failure of numerous tailings dams in Chile during the EL Cobre earthquake (I), an investigation was performed to assess the earthquake stability of the proposed dam. This included a soil investigation on the first cycloned sand dyke, which had been built to a height of 45 ft. Results indicated that the density of the sand was much lower than existing empirical criteria consider to be necessary for resistance to liquefaction. As a result, the dam was redesigned. The downstream method of construction was selected and a yearly construction program was developed to make use of sand available by cycloning. To increase shear strength, improve resistance to liquefaction, and to utilize steeper slopes, compaction of all sand in the dam was specified. A special underdrainage layer and toe drains were incorporated in the design. Details of the decant system and surface erosion alternatives are described. SITE CONDITIONS The mining project is located in the Philippine Islands. At the present annual rate of production, about 4,230,000 cu.m. of tailings will be produced yearly. The volume requirements for tailings storage design for the first 10 years of operation are in the order of 45,000,000 cu.m. The topography near the mine is mountainous with many gullies and canyons carved out by high intensity rainfall and runoff. The bedrock, which is generally shallow and weathered for a considerable depth, is overlain by laterite soils. Vegetation is comprised largely of palms, banana trees, and tropical shrubs and grasses. Precipitation is heavy. The average yearly rainfall over 24 years is 65.2 in. and the maximum recorded 24 hour rainfall is 9.0 in. High intensity rainfall is associated with typhoon storms, which are a seasonal threat inthe Philippines. Fig. 1 shows a summary of monthly precipitation.

The stoichiometry ranges ofNiOl+y and LiFe,O,-d were established by high-temperatwe electrochemical meas7rements in a stabilized-zirconia electrolyte cell. The results were consistent with doubly ionized cation vacancies in NiO,+y and interstitial lithium or iron ions in . The defect structure of the ternary ferrite was derived from the consideration of equilibration with respect to oxygen between the solid and the gas phase. The absolute magnitudes of defect concentrations were calculated. Pavtial molar enthalpies of oxygen in the compounds were calculated and interpreted in terms of the enthalpy of defect formation in these crystals. NICKEL oxide (NiO,,?) is a metal-deficient, p-type, extrinsic semiconductor whose properties are consistent with a structural model based on the presence of cation vacancies as the predominant ionic defect at sufficiently high temperatures and oxygen activities. A survey of previously reported conductivity studies and the presentation of some more recent conductivity measurements will be given in a later paper.' The absolute magnitude of the equilibrium vacancy concentration in NiO has been reported from combined conductivity and thermogravimetric data of ' However, disagreement exists concerning the state of ionization of the nickel vacancies in NiO. Some authors3-' have proposed that the predominant defects in NiO are singly ionized nickel vacancies and positive holes (h') formed by the reaction where, accorhng to the notation of Kroger and Vink,6'7 Oq represents an oxygen ion on its normal lattice site. Other authors"27E have proposed that doubly ionized nickel vacancies (V{i ) and positive holes are predominant and are formed by the reaction One purpose of the present investigation was to establish the nature of the predominant defect in NiO,+? as well as its equilibrium concentration and thermo-dynamic properties at elevated temperatures and known oxygen activities. To accomplish this purpose, the coulometric titration of oxygen into and out of NiO was accomplished using a galvanic cell involving the calcia-stabilized zirconia electrolyte. The ternary oxide, lithium ferrite (LiFe50,-6) is ferromagnetic and has the inverse spinel structure LiFe,O,-d Thus, in the ideal stoichiometric XY204 lattice, Fe3 ions occupy one-eighth of the tetrahedral (A) sites, and i' and Fe3' ions share at random one-half of the octahedral (B) sites within the fcc sublattice of oxygen ions.g The structure and thermodynamics of the spinel structures have been comprehensively decribed.'-' A recent compilation of literature for lithium ferrite is also available. 15 Oxygen-excess LiFe50sis not expected to exist because both i' and 17e3& ions are in their highest normal valency states (positive hole formation is not favorable). As will be discussed, equilibration of the ferrite crystal with oxygen of a surrounding gaseous phase will result in the introduction of equilibrium concentrations of ionic and electronic defects. In the Results and Discussion section a defect model for LiFe50,-d is proposed. This defect model is tested by high-temperature coulometric titration experiments. EXPERIMENT The oxygen activities in nonstoichiometric NiOl+, (and also LiFe,O,-d) were measured by means of coulometric titration with the high-temperature galvanic cell The critical characteristic of a suitable experimental cell is the complete isolation of the phase to be investigated in a minimum sized chamber which is free from extraneous sources and sinks for oxygen (leakage). Then oxygen is only admitted to the chamber or removed from it in known amounts by coulometric titration, which involves the passage of oxygen ions through the solid electrolyte with electrochemical oxidation and reduction reactions at the platinum contacts to the electrolyte. The experimental cell is shown in Fig. 1. The cap of the cell was the tip from a closed-end alumina tube, which was found to be leak-free from a helium leak-detector test. This alumina cap was about 1.2 cm OD and about 1.5 cm high. A Zircoa calcia-stabilized zirconia tablet (crucible lid) of 1.5 cm diam and 0.3 cm thickness served as the solid electrolyte. A Pyrex ring of about 0.1 cm thickness was placed between the electrolyte and the cap. The electrolyte tablet was painted with platinum paste on the entire outer face and on that part of the inner face which would be within the enclosure; these electrodes were further prepared by heating in air at 1000°C for 2 hr. Nickel oxide powder, listed as 99.999 pct pure, was purchased from Leico Industries, Inc. Pills of the NiO were cold-pressed and sintered at 1050°C for 3 hr in a platinum crucible. [Secretary's Note.—The following official tables, prepared by the government of the State of Nuevo Leon, and presented to the Institute at the fifth seseion of its Mexican meeting, held at Monterrey, November 26, 1901, present in compact form a general summary of the mineral and metallurgical industry of the State for the preceding calendar year, together with a statement of the railway-shipments of ores from January 1 to October 31, 1901, which, in the absence of direct official mining and metallurgical statistics (not yet available for that year), clearly indicates an increased activity and productiveness of these industries. In other words, the mines are reported to have yielded in 1900 a total product of 83,960,169 kilos of ore; whereas, the railway is reported to have carried, in 10 months of 1901, a total of 108,318,647 kilos of ore. At this rate, the railway-shipments for 1901 mould amount to nearly 130,000,000 kilos. It is, of course, possible that the railwaystatistics include other freight than ores, or that they include duplications, such as would be involved in the record, first of certain ores transported, and afterwards of the " base bullion " produced therefrom. An accurate comparison is therefore impossible ; yet, after making all reasonable allowances for such items as have been named, it seems safe to infer that the mining and metallurgical industry of this State accomplished in 1901 a substantial progress.]

Annealing properties of subszerface amorphous lavers produced through high-energy ion implantation in silicon are studied. The buried layers are produced through the implantation of ions (nitrogen), ranging in energy from 1.5 to 2 mev. X-ray interference patterns, transmission electron microscopy, and resistivity profiling are used to study the annealing characteristics of the ion damage. The annealing experiments indicate a low temperature (below 700°C) and a high temperature (above 700°C) region. Significant changes occur in the amorphous layer during the high-temperature anneal. Such changes are corre-lated with the re crystallization of the amorphous silicon and the formation of subsurface (buried) silicon-nitride films. TODAY'S main problems in the field of ion implantation are related to the accurate determination and prediction of 1) the distribution profiles of implanted ions, 2) the lattice sites occupied by the implanted ions, 3) the lattice damage produced through ion implantation, and 4) the annealing characteristics of damage centers in the lattice. This paper reports investigations concerned with the problems listed under 3) and 4). EXPERIMENTAL Our investigations cover the energy range of incident ions from 100 to 300 mev and from 1 to 2.5 mev. The emphasis of this study is on the energy range from 1.5 to 2 mev. The experiments are conducted with single charged nitrogen ions. To implant the ions a van de Graaff generator is used as described by Roosild et al.1 Accordingly, a gas containing the desired ion specie is passed through a thermome-chanical leak into a radio frequency activated source. The positive ions are driven into the van de Graaff with the help of a variable voltage probe. Emerging from the accelerator the ions drift into a magnetic analyzing system and here the desired ion specie is bent 90 deg into the exit port. The ion beam leaving the analyzer is defocused and drifts down a 4-ft long tube to hit the silicon target. At this position the 20 pamp ion beam has a circular cross-section of 2.1 cm. N2 is used as a source gas for nitrogen ions. The implantation target is silicon with zero dislocation density, 2 ohm-cm resistivity, (111) orientation, mechanically-chemically polished, and 1 mm thick. The target is mounted on a water-cooled heat sink and kept at room temperature. A fluence of 1015 to 1016 ions per sq cm is used. RESULTS 1) Silicon Perfection after Bombardment. High-energy ion bombardment of silicon has some striking effects on lattice perfection. Some results were reported in detail previously at the Santa Fe conference2 and are here briefly summarized for the benefit of the experiments described in the following. 1.1) Identification of Surface Films on Silicon. After bombardment all samples are found to be coated with surface films. The films on the silicon surface vary in thickness and color; they can be transparent, slightly brown, or opaque. The films are thicker and darker in the high-intensity area of the beam and they delineate the bombarded surface area of the crystal. The films produce electron diffraction patterns characteristic of carbon and of SiO2. Carbon is predominant. The presence of carbon in these films was confirmed by use of the electron microprobe. Formation of the films occurs independently of the ions used and is attributed to a contaminated vacuum of the high-voltage machine. The carbon is most likely the product of the pump oil which is cracked and polymerized under ion impact. The films stick tenaciously to the silicon surface and burn off in a low-temperature Bunsen flame. 1.2) Mechanical Perfection of the Silicon Surface. The mechanical perfection of the bombarded silicon surface was investigated through optical microscopy, electron microscopy in which the replica technique is used, and optical interferometry. No mechanical damage of the surface was visible after bombardment. However, if a bombarded sample is soaked for several minutes in hydrofluoric acid (HF), gas bubbles may develop in certain spots of the silicon surface. It is also noted that in these areas the surface film starts to peel off. Relatively large patches of film come off if the sample is soaked in HF during ultrasonic agitation. After HF treatment, pits may be present on the silicon surface. The pit dimensions are estimated to be as large as 50 µ. The pits appear in the region of most intense irradiation. 1.3) Lattice Perfection After Bombardment. No lattice damage is found on the silicon surface. Electron transmission micrographs and selected area diffraction patterns of the surface show no difference before and after bombardment. Measured approximately 2 µm down from the surface, the silicon lattice throughout this depth is of good perfection. Well-defined Laue spots and Kikuchi lines are obtained from the surface as well as from the indicated area below the surface. However, some radiation damage is dispersed in this top layer. A sharp boundary line separates this surface layer from a highly damaged layer which extends further downward into the silicon. Typical of this

Heat and gas flow interactions in nonisothermal packed beds were examined in the paper. A study was made of the response of the system to a step or pulse change in the inlet gas temperature, with a fixed value of the overall pressure drop across the bed. Under these conditions the heat flow and fluid flow transients are coupled because the convective heat transfer rate is alfected by the mass flow rate of the gas which, in turn, for a fixed pressure drop will depend on the temperature profile in the system. The Problem was stated in terms of differential equations, which were integrated numerically. The parameters used in the computation were so chosen to reflect the operation of the stack region of blast furnaces and sinterbeds. The computed results showed that the pressure drop-flou1 relationships and the rate of progress of the temperature fronts (waves) were strongly interrelated and were also markedly affected by variations in particle size and in void fraction. MANY metallurgical processes involve the contact of solid particles with a gas stream in a packed bed arrangement under nonisothermal conditions. Examples are shaft furnaces, regenerators, pebble heaters, and the sinter process. Although the heat and mass transfer aspects of packed bed processing have been extensively studied, the associated flow phenomena and in particular the effects of nonisothermality on the flow, have received little attention to date. :In fact, most of the previous workers considered the flow rate of the carrier gas time invariant and independent of the heat or mass transfer processSzekely and carr2 have shown that the pressure drop-flow relationships in nonisothermal packed beds may be strongly affected by the temperature profile within the system. These authors have devised a method for relating the pressure drop to flow for a given temperature profile. thus providing an extension of the Ergun equation to steady nonisothermal systems. Finally, in a recent paper willmot3 examined the response of regenerators to externally imposed changes in the gas flow rate. Both these investigations were somewhat specialized since, in general, neither the temperature distribution nor the gas flow rate may be regarded as truly independent variables, thus the heat transfer and the fluid flow problems have to be solved simultaneously. The work reported here is divided into two parts: in Part 1 the general formulation is given and a detailed discussion is presented of fixed bed systems. Part is devoted to systems in which a gas and particulate solids are contacted in a counter flow arrangement. FORMULATION Consider a nonisothermal fixed packed bed, extending from through which a gas is flowing. The problem is to develop a relationship between pressure drop and gas flow (with the gas flow being the dependent variable) and to evaluate the rate at which a change in the gas temperature, imposed at the inlet, travels through the system. Let us consider an infinitesimal section of the bed and establish differential heat, mass, and mechanical energy balances over this region. In addition, relationships are needed describing the temperature dependence of gas density (equation of state) and the temperature dependence of viscosity. These may be written as: where c, and are constants. It is noted that in this formulation we neglected any temperature gradients within the solid particles, thus assuming these to be either sufficiently small or of sufficiently high thermal conductivity to meet this condition. The justification and consequences of this assumption will be mentioned in the discussion.

PROGRESS in the general field of nonferrous physical metallurgy during the past .year has been uneventful but healthy. A continued increase is apparent in the number of useful alloys and in the mechanical treatment and heat- treatment of finished metals and alloys nothing can hinder the multiplication of alloys or the diversification of their treatment as knowledge of the behavior of .alloys increases; as ternary and quaternary alloys are better understood, hundreds of new metal combinations with unusual properties may well be expected. Evidence of rapid progress is already at hand.

TEE purpose of this article is not only to describe the plant and method of cyaniding the Treadwell concentrates, but to present some of the results of the experimental work obtained in the past three years for the Alaska-Treadwell Gold Mining Co., at Douglas Island, Alaska., under the direction of F. W. Bradley, Consulting Engineer, and Robert A. Kinzie, General Superintendent, of the affiliated companies. At the time the experimental work was undertaken the concentrates were being shipped to the smeltery at Tacoma, Wash., and the cost for treatment of 3-oz. Copper segregation developments within the Anglo American Group are described with particular reference to the work of the TORCO Project Team. Some radical differences have been adopted in the mechan-ical approach as compared with methods used by previous workers. Most important among these are the following: (1) The heating unit is a fluidized-bed roaster. (2) A moving bed segregation chamber is used in which a packed bed of heated ore, to which reagents have been added, moves slowly downwards under gravity and is discharged at a controlled rate by means of a suitable valve mechanism. (3) The quantities of reagents used (sodium chloride and some form of carbon) are only a small fraction of those recommended by other investigators. (4) Retention times of only 2 min have been satisfactory for the complete segregation of many types of ore. Project TORCO is the code name given by Anglo American Corp. of South Africa, Ltd., to the investigation undertaken in Zambia to develop a plant capable of treating large tonnages of refractory copper-bearing ores by the segregation process. The process has now been under investigation for six years (1960-66) and during that period work has progressed from bench-scale laboratory tests through small-scale pilot-plant work to a 500-tpd commercial pilot unit. Test work has been carried out mainly on the ores of the Zambian Copperbelt and results have been encouraging. Recoveries on the order of 90% have been obtained on all Copperbelt ores tested with high concentrate grades. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION Laboratory scale segregation test work on Nchanga banded sandstone ore and oxidized ore from Kansan-shi was originally conducted by Professor Maurice Rey. SociCtC Miniere et Mktallurgique de Pefiarroya, in 1957. Both ores responded favorably to the process. In November, 1960, the consulting engineers of Anglo American Corp. of South Africa, Ltd., initiated preliminary investigations on the application of the segregation process to Copperbelt ores. In early laboratory work, samples were heated in a closed, externally heated tube furnace for one hour at temperatures ranging from 800 to 830°C. The free moisture content of the ore feed was 4% and reagent additions were 0.5% salt and 1.0% coal. Both salt and coal were pre-crushed to -48 mesh Tyler.* All samples except an ore from the Bancroft mine responded well to the process and recoveries of over 90% were obtained. The presence of dolomite was responsible for the relatively poor recoveries from the Bancroft ore, as tests on one of the other ores with additions of calcite or dolomite confirmed. Recoveries dropped from 94 to 45% Grades of all the rougher flotation concentrates produced were low at 10-15% copper. The laboratory investigation was then followed up on a pilot-plant scale. An attempt was made to carry out the segregation process in a coal-fired 5-ft-diam fluidized-bed roaster. The feed consisted of a banded sandstone from Nchanga to which 0.5% sodium chloride had been added. Reducing conditions were maintained in the roaster by the addition of coal in excess of that required for heating the feed. The excess coal and added salt constituted the segregation reagents and the temperature of the bed was held at approximately 750°C. Recoveries of copper and grades of concentrates were low. The reasons for lack of success were: (1) The reaction is a gaseous one and a fluidized-bed roaster is therefore unsuitable as a segregation unit. (2) Coal in excess of that required for heating was introduced into the fluidized bed and under these conditions some of the copper would be reduced in situ. The term "reduced in situ" is used here to describe any copper mineral reduced to the metallic state in its original site within the ore particles. If this copper is to be recovered by subsequent froth flotation it must first be liberated from the gangue by grinding or some other method which, in practice, is usually not feasible on ores of this type.

This article presents a series of guidelines by which the geologist can evaluate the likelihood of surface faulting and its probable extent at any given site in Southern California and Nevada. The information is intended primarily for geologists concerned with establishing design criteria for proposed nuclear plants. The geologic problems involved in the location of a nuclear power plant are fundamentally no different from those for other types of installations. They fall into four main categories: foundation stability, landslides and slope stability, shaking due to earthquakes, and surface faulting. For problems in the first three categories the foundation engineer, the geologist, and the seismologist can provide criteria for plant location and design, and these problems can generally be economically handled by appropriate design measures for a project of the magnitude of a nuclear plant. However, problems in the last category — surface faulting — are more difficult to handle and require a unique evaluation. Accordingly, this paper will deal primarily with the problem of establishing design criteria for surface faulting, particularly as it affects nuclear facilities. A nuclear reactor is a power source that for greater safety is contained in a heavy, air-tight structure, just as gas, oil, water, and other power sources must be contained. Surface faulting is significant in that it may reduce the integrity of the containment by affecting critical exterior piping or by breaching of the containment. A similar significance exists relative to dams or tanks for the storage of water, gas, or oil, except that in these latter examples the breaching of the container automatically releases the fluids to do their damage. This is not necessarily the case with the rupture of a reactor containment structure because the function of the containment is totally protective, i.e., it is necessary only in the event that radioactive products are released from the reactor, and there are many other safeguards to pre- vent this release even if the containment is ruptured. At the present time, nuclear power plants must be located near large sources of water for cooling the steam generated. The construction of an industrial facility of any kind on the coast line is esthetically distasteful to most people since, unfortunately, there is not enough coast to fulfill all the needs and all the desires of all the people. In most cases where industrial facilities encroach on the lives of citizens, there is no mechanism other than zoning laws by which a person can effectively protest. But in the case of a nuclear facility, the public hearing required by the Atomic Energy Commission provides a forum for dissent, as in recent case histories, and the question of safety provides objectors with a weapon for fighting the construction of the plant. The nature of a public hearing for a nuclear plant is such that the prospective owner and operator must prove that there is no undue hazard, whereas the objectors need only demonstrate that there is a reasonable doubt. It is in this situation that geology becomes the Achilles Heel of nuclear power plant location. For his investigation, the geologist has natural exposures of rock at the ground surface and a limited number of trenches and drill holes to give him a fairly complete picture of the distribution of the various rock types. From the surficial data, he must infer three more dimensions — depth below the surface, past time, and future time. Unlike many problems faced by engineers, the geologist has only this one set of data from which to reach a conclusion — he is unable to reproduce the natural sequence of events in order to obtain another set of data for comparison. Hence, by the very deductive nature of a geologic conclusion, it is difficult to prove a geologic conclusion beyond a reasonable doubt even to other geologists — and perhaps one should say especially to other geologists because the experience and background of a geologist will strongly influence his conclusion, and no two geologists have exactly the same experience and training. The engineer and the public official would like the geologist to conclude that faulting cannot occur at a given site or to assign a numerical value to the probability of its occurrence — but no responsible geologist can do either of these things. Since government officials and others must make decisions that affect the public safety, it would seem that the geologic profession must attempt to establish criteria and

In the past, other authors.1, 2 have studied the influence of a skin effect on the productivity of a well. This skin effect, expressed by the skin factor S, is considered to be caused by a thin layer of impaired permeability immediately around the wellbore and extending vertically over the whole productive interval penetrated by the well. The skin factor S is defined as follows. Based on this, the impairment in productivity caused by a skin can be expressed by the fractional loss in productivity I, which is the loss in productivity divided by the total unimpaired productivity. For compressible flow in a stabilized well which drains a circular area of radius re, 1 is given by The present paper deals with a different kind of productivity impairment. Consider a well in which part of the productive formation is blocked off completely, either by incomplete penetration or by exclusion of parts of the productive zone by blank casing. In Fig. 1 (A, B and C), three examples are shown. Fig. 1(A) shows the situation where a well only partially penetrates the formation. This often is done to combat the actual or imagined danger of bottom-water coning. Fig. 1(B) shows a well producing from only the central portion of a productive interval. This type of completion is sometimes used where both water and gas coning are a problem. Although the case of a well producing through perforated casing cannot be treated in a manner similar to the previous two cases (where radial flow in the horizontal plane is assumed), Fig. 1(C) shows several intervals open to production and qualitatively describes this case (as will be discussed later). To study the loss in productivity in all these cases, two parameters are introduced which fully determine the impairment. The first is the penetration ratio "b," i.e., the total interval open to fluid entry divided by the total thickness of the productive zone. The second is the ratio hlrw. In this ratio, rw is the wellbore radius. The definition of h is more cumbersome. In Fig. 1(A), h is the thickness of the total productive interval. The streamline configuration for this case of partial penetration is basic to the other two cases considered (Views B and C of Fig. 1). It will be obvious from Fig. i (A) that the flow lines in the uppermost portion of the formation will be essentially horizontal, while those in the lower portion will curve upward toward the well. In Fig. 1(B), with only the middle portion of the zone open to production, the streamline configuration. of the upper half will be an exact mirror image of that in the lower half of the zone. Hence, for the case illustrated in Fig. 1(B), h is defined as one-half the total sand thickness. It follows, then, that in Fig. 1(C) h is one-half the distance between corresponding points in adjacent intervals. (In gun-perforated casing, h would be one-half the distance between perforations.) In a paper by Nisle4 and a paper given by the present authors5, the mathematical theory was developed for the cases under consideration. In the present publication, the emphasis is put on the results of these studies; consequently, the equations derived in Refs. 4 and 5 will be omitted, for the most part. INTRODUCTION Waves of tremendous proportions accompanying hurricane winds crash against breakwaters and other offshore structures causing untold damages. Wave forces exerted on structures at these times are enormous, as shown by past records of incidents where massive portions of breakwaters have been broken off and moved by waves. On other similar occasions, whole structure; have been unloosed and smashed or floated away. These incidents, which seem almost incredible, serve to illustrate the great amount of energy contained in large waves, and to show that this energy results in powerful forces destructive to offshore installation~ which are not designed sufficiently strong to withstand wave attack. In the past the expected frequencies of waves having various characteristic.% have rarely been considered in the design of structure affected by wave action. As a result, many structures have failed to accomplish the purpose for which they were designed or have collapsed under wave attack. Others have been constructed to withstand greater wave energy than is ever encountered, with resulting waste of material and construction time. In this study an analysis is made of the frequencies of waves having different characteristics which affect the plans for offshore drilling installations. After such an analysis the erection of these structures can proceed with less risk involved and with more efficiency and economy. ENGINEERING ASPECTS In the offshore drilling program wave forces play an extremely important part in design and construction of drilling rigs in shallow water. The design of a platform or other structure from which drilling equipment is operated is critical, becauze any damage to the platform may endanger personnel and result in complete loss of equipment. Since a platform built too close to the water would be battered by breakers, and one built unnecessarily high would involve undue expense, it is necessary to know the most desirable elevation at which the platform should be erected. This is only one of many questions about structural planning which can be answered using existing technique for determining wave characteristics. The purpose of efficient design for the portions of many types of offshore structures which are acted upon by wave forces is the same as that of all designs which deal with frictional forces of a fluid on a solid. For these structures the problem is comparable to that encountered by undersea craft moving through water, except that in the case of a fixed structure the force is produced by the water moving past the model. For off shore sructures which are extremely rigid the frictional forces may be nearly negligible compared with the impact or shock forces imparted by breaking waves. In all case; the better design is that which offers the least resistance to the opposing forces. From a consideration of wave forces, each drilling structure varies in efficiency depending upon the type and amount of superstructure in contact with the waves. For example, round piling and bracing offer less resistance to wave forces than do I-shaped ones. All network superstructure such as cross bracing should be kept to a minimum and at as low an elevation as possible, so that it will not expecience the pressure exerted at the tops of breaking waves. Models of proposed structures can be tested in wave tanks and in the field to ascertain the efficiency of specific designs. Past experience in beach and shoreline engineering has shown that, although changes in the topography of the bottom very near shore do not seem to be occurring, the natural forces involved may be in a delicate balance such that a static state exists. Interruptions of any of these natural forces by erecting offshore structures are likely to cause undesirable effects. Changes in beach profile result partly from sediment being brought into suspension by the orbital motion of waves and partly from the transport of sediment by longshore currents. With the erection of an offshore structure and consequent change in the combined effects of these two forces, unfavorable deposition upon, or erosion of, the bottom at the site may occur. Therefore, combination wave and current studies are essential for the solution of problems involved in the design of most marine structures. TECHNIQUE FOR OBTAINING WAVE INFORMATION In determining the probable effect of wave action on an offshore drilling structure, it is first necessary to know the usual frequencies of certain wave types for the given location. INTERESTING developments going on in European coal mines look to: (1) increasing mechanization; 12) concentration of mining; (3) improvement in safety appliances; and (4) studies in bettering roof supports and. incident to this, studies of the way a roof behaves under different conditions of support and methods of mining and back-filling. Mechanization and concentration off mining is being adapted to a considerable extent in Great Britain coincident with the development of conveyors. Belt conveyors, shaker-pan conveyors, and a combination of the two are used. For pitching seams not steep enough for the coal to run in station-chutes, the. shaker-pan conveyor is more popular. For large outputs from a contiguous face, the double-unit system of face layout-that is, the conveyors meeting at a common point-is favored.

BACKGROUND Homestake Mining Company began milling operations at the Bulldog Mountain Mine near Creede, Colorado in 1969. The Bulldog Mill, rated at 350 tpd, produces a bulk flotation condentrate assaying about 180 oz/T Ag and 20% Pb, from heads of about 16 oz/T Ag and 2% Pb. The circuit is straightforward with two-stage grinding to 1-5% plus 65 mesh, followed by rougher and cleaner flotation. Reagents used are Z-6, Z-11, Aerofloat 242 and Aero Promoter 404, with an Aerofroth 65-MIBC mixture for a frother. Additional information on the geology, mine and mill are available in references (1) and (2). A flow sheet for the mill and CIP plant together is attached as Figure 1. Final flotation tailings normally vary from 1.5 - 2.0 oz/T Ag. These tailings are cycloned to produce sand for underground backfill. After cycloning, the sands are repulped and given a final scavenger float. This sand scavenger recovers a small additional amount of silver which recycles back to the main flotation circuit. The tailings are recycloned and pumped to the mine or, if the mine cannot accept sand, to tailings. The majority of the silver in the flotation tailings exists in the fine fractions; cycloning upgrades the slimes and lowers the assay of the sand. The sand, after scavenging, typically assays 0.5 oz/T Ag, and the slimes assay about 3.0-3.5 oz/T Ag. OUTSTANDING among the year's events in copper has been the reimposition of an import duty of 4r. per pound in this country which became effective June 21. In consequence of this action by Congress, the Ottawa Empire conference recommended a duty of 2d. per pound equivalent at normal rate of exchange to our 4c. duty, on all copper originating outside of the Empire. Lip to the middle of this year only Russia and Japan had a closed market; the import duty on copper in Russia is 30 per cent ad valoremm and in Japan about 2c. Russia's consumption has always been in excess of production and she has imported from 2(1,000 to 40,000 ton, of copper per annum. Japan, with a production of 6,000 to 7,000 tons per month, has absorbed, in normal times, its production, but during recent: sears has exported varyiug quantities in 1929. 2,200 ton-: in 1930, 2,700 tons, and in 1931. 3,600 ton-. Aside from the-e two countries, the international market has heretofore been free. It and when the British Empire duty become, effective the world's markets will be divided into four unit: 1.
