The concrete lining for a long 8.05 km (5 mi) section of New York City Water Tunnel No. 3 was cast in place. The contractor, Grow-Perini-Skanska, placed over76,841 m3 (100,505 cy) of concrete, pouring 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. The concrete was dropped 204 m (670 ft) to the tunnel level, transported by rail to a concrete remixer and pump, and placed in 146.3m (480 ft) of full circle forms. Some of the many challenges include the sheer magnitude of the job, navigating through drifts, a raise and curves, dealing with ground water inflows, and placing the concrete within time limits.

"The Key Lake uranium mine is the largest single uranium producer in the world. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco Corporation and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining. Cameco is the operator. Current production is fourteen million pounds per year of uranium oxide (U308).The mine's location is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca Basin approximately at latitude 57° 11 'north and longitude 105° 34' west. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.The mill was commissioned in 1983. A molybdenum plant was constructed in 1989 in response to increasing molybdenum content in the yellowcake or final product. Early test work had showed that the first ore body to be mined, the Gaertner deposit, would present few problems with regards to molybdenum in the product. However, the test work also showed that the higher molybdenum content of the Deilmann ore, the second Key Lake orebody to be mined, would result in increased molybdenum concentrations. Without the molybdenum plant, penalties would become excessive and some product might not accepted by the refineries.This paper will describe the current Key Lake mill process with emphasis on the molybdenum solvent extraction process. It will cover the chemistry of the process, process development in the mid 1980's, and current operating practices.The Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants, crushing and grinding, leaching -counter current decantation (CCD), solvent extraction, yellowcake/crystallization and bulk neutralization (Figure 1. Recent developments in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) once-through supercritical technology (OTSC) have enabled this technology to be offered as a utility-scale alternative competing head-to-head with pulverized fuel (PF) OTSC offerings. One clear example is the CFB supercritical unit at the Lagisza Power Plant in Poland, owned by PoludniowyKoncernEnergetyczny SA (PKE). This unit has now been in commercial operation for three full years, exhibiting very good performance, and has validated Foster Wheeler's performance model at this utility scale as well as for units in the 600 MWe and 800 MWe size ranges offering net efficiency of -43 per cent (LHV basis). This operating unit has also proven the use of the world's first FW/BENSONTM vertical-tube OTSC low mass flux technology. Since the Lagisza original international tender specified OTSC PF technology, it is important to note that the alternative selection of CFB OTSC technology over conventional PF technology is of historic significance, not only for the validation of the CFB supercritical platform as a viable alternative to conventional PF technology, but it also positions the CFB OTSC with fuel flexibility for offering of sizes up to and including 800 MWe units. This paper explores the differences between CFB OTSC technology and standard PF OTSC in utility power generation. Selection criteria, fuel burning range in both technologies, and other selection drivers are discussed. Economic analysis of both technologies, based on existing cases, is also provided. Also discussed are the technical advantages and uses of each technology. Foster Wheeler has recently been awarded a contract for four units of CFB OTSC technology, which utilizes a 2 on 1 configuration of two 550 MWe CFB OTSC boilers on two single 1000 MWe turbines. Essentially this provides a fuel-flexible low-emissions alternative to a 2 x 1000 MWe solid fuel power block.

Most people involved in the mining industry are familiar with student-industry co-op work-study programs. Many colleges and universities have used them for years. Northern College’s Haileybury School of Mines student co-op program adds a new dimension of productivity to the college and the mining industry. The college is located in Hailey-bury, Ontario, Canada. An example of the program’s success is the school’s relationship with Sabin Metal’s SMC (Canada) Ltd.’s McAlpine Mill in Cobalt, Ontario. Students gain practical knowledge and experience while industry gains an eager-to-learn worker. And many of the college’s advanced research services are made available to industry to supplement their own capabilities. The McAlpine Mill was established to provide custom milling of slags and ores. It also recovers metal values from other products of the primary and secondary precious metal industries.

In 1976 the Pitjantjatjara Council was established under the Associations Incorporation Act 1985 (SA), for the initial purpose of organising and bringing together three similar Indigenous groups. These members of the Pitjantjatjara Council of Central Australia were demanding land rights and to legally protect their traditional lands. The Land Rights movement was more focused on the South Australian Government that became more receptive to the general notion that Aboriginal freehold land could be attainable.For almost five years, Pitjantjatjara CouncilÆs intense negotiations took place with the Dunstan and Tonkin Governments culminating in the final passage of legislation by 1981. A bi-partisan approach by Government and opposition applauded by all South Australians for its mature and socially responsible actions, in line with the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth). Despite the similarities between South Australian and the Northern Territory Land Rights legislation, there still remains one obvious distinction. In the Northern Territory case, its legislation established æLand CouncilsÆ as statutory authorities that are responsible for the management and use of designated Aboriginal lands. On the other hand, South Australian legislation fails to include any reference to æLand CouncilsÆ as defined in the Northern Territory Act. The intention of establishing such æLand CouncilsÆ in the Northern Territory was, and is to provide legal, anthropological and other expect advisers that respond to the wishes and opinions of Traditional Aboriginal Owners. Negotiations between mining companies and Land Councils, will, after the granting of mining leases, monies are then transferred to those Councils being a percentage of royalty entitlements. While the Pitjantjatjara Land Rights Act 1981 (SA) (Act) does provide royalty arrangements to Anangu Pitjantjatjara (AP), a body corporate pursuant to the Act as a Landholding Body (and not as a æLand CouncilÆ), it does not provide any royalty payments for the legal and anthropological services by the Pitjantjatjara Council for providing essentially similar services as the Northern Territory Land Councils. The limited services by AP do provide complimentary services from other organisations û including the Pitjantjatjara Council. There are approximately 4000 Anangu members who reside on AP Lands and more than 1000 other Anangu members live near AP Lands in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. These people are defined as APÆs æTraditional OwnersÆ by virtue of their affiliation to portions of AP Lands. As a result, the depth and understanding of spiritual beliefs and customs are strongly present as it relates to the whole of the Lands. Most of these members reside at permanent communities that spread unevenly about the northern and south-western parts of AP Lands. In addition, there are numerous æHomelandsÆ where families and extended families have establish homes, with electricity and water supplies on those Traditional Lands (see Appendix 1 and 2 of this paper depicting the map showing AP Lands and also showing stunning photographs taken during late last year). All roads and airstrips are unsealed between communities and Homelands and the essential services to all communities are limited and costly to provide, and require continuous upgrading. Capital expenditure on infrastructure is sorely needed and alarming levels of unemployment is of serious concern. Tjilpi (older) Anangu members have continually discuss the urgency to provide employment and education for the future of their children and grandchildren while balancing the needs of maintaining cultural and spiritual considerations. It is thus a growing realisation by many Traditional Owners that long-term benefits occur as a result of exploration and production of oil or minerals. There are promising results from Primary Industry and Resources of South AustraliaÆs (PIRSA) Aero-magnetic Surveys on the Musgrave and Mann Ranges and soon to be completed surveys of the remaining southern half of AP Lands (see Appendix 3). PIRSA and mining companies û such as Rio Tinto Exploration Pty Ltd and Delta Gold NL û have been more conscious of the necessity for improving the dissemination of information to Traditional Owners and to AP members. With recent findings of large nickel deposits just over the border in Western Australia, there is a strong indication that discoveries may occur on AP Lands as similar geological information is present on the east Musgrave Block. Consequently there are concerted efforts by the legal and anthropological services of the Pitjantjatjara Council to arrange Workshops and Summit meeting to give extra information û particularly information concerning the true effect of large-scale mining operations û to members to properly consider these proposals. Pitjantjatjara Council will play a major role in any decisions effecting Traditional Owners and AP, and will ensure orderly and professional services when dealing with legal, cultural and sensitive matters. This paper addresses the historical and current relationship between Pitjantjatjara Council and AP, with an emphasis on mining operations on AP Lands. It argues that future economic and social development on AP Lands hinge predominantly on the legal recognition of the Pitjantjatjara Council for its ongoing role, responsibilities and protection afforded to AP and its Traditional Owners.

Results of a comprehensive investigation of the impact of underground mine waste disposal on the health and safety of miners are presented. Information was gathered through an extensive search of American and foreign literature and personal communication with professionals in private industry and government. All conceivable health and safety hazards directly or indirectly related to underground mine waste disposal are analyzed, catagorized, and ranked on an industry-wide basis. Positive health and safety effects are analyzed and ranked in a similar way. Both potential and known hazards and positive impacts are included. Recommendations on abatement techniques for the various hazards are presented. Case histories of a fill-related accident in a metal mine and a health hazard associated wtih coal waste backfilling are included and causes and possible abatement procedures are discussed. The rule of management in the promotion of health and safety in backfilling operation is discussed.

The combustion of brown coals in Latrobe Valley power stations produces approximately 500 000 tonnes of solid wastes each year. This material, which includes precipitator ash, char and furnace ash, is hydraulically sluiced to large ashing ponds and the supernatant solution is ultimately discharged to the sea. There are significant operational and capital costs associated with the current ashing system. The ash produced from the Latrobe Valley coals is unique and has a wide variety of potential applications including soil conditioning, concrete and cement extenders, fillers in non-metallic materials, components of building products. In addition, with the application of appropriate technology, it is possible to extract char, sodium sulphate, calcium carbonate and magnesium metal (as the chloride) in substantial quantities from the ash. Research has been carried out to explore the prospects of these various options for ash utilisation. The research has focused on detailed characterisation of the ash material and the potential extraction efficiency for various species under various conditions. From this work a conceptual process has been developed and subsequent studies have been directed towards understanding variables and optimising operating regimes for product extraction. Currently, the work is concentrating on the separation of char, the development of high-grade carbon products and the extraction of sodium sulphate.

The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.4-km- (6.5- mile-) long, 14.4-m (47.5-ft) bored tunnel that will run under the city of Niagara Falls from the Upper Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck power station. The completed project will enhance the capacity of the Sir Adam Beck power station by adding 500 m3 /sec (17,657 cu ft/sec) of water through the tunnel. The project uses the world?s largest hard-rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) at 14.4 m (47.5 ft) in diameter to excavate the tunnel. Features of the project include the use of a high performance (HP) main beam TBM, state-of-the-art ground support and tunnel logistics systems. A continuous conveyor is used for muck transport from the TBM to the disposal area In June 2004, the Ontario government announced that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) had been given approval to proceed with the third tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls ? the first two tunnels were constructed in the 1950s using drill-and-blast techniques. The third tunnel, appropriately named the Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP), consists of a 10.4-km- (6.5-mile-) long TBM-bored, concrete-lined tunnel with a finished diameter of 12.5 m (41.1 ft). In August 2005, OPG the selected of Strabag of Austria, one of the largest construction companies in Europe, as the contractor to build the NTP at a price of C$600 million. In September 2005, Strabag selected The Robbins Co. of Solon, OH to design, manufacture and deliver a new 14.4- m- (47.5-ft-) diameter high performance, state-of-the-art main beam hard rock TBM to be used in the excavation of the tunnel. To meet the aggressive construction schedule as requested by OPG/Strabag, the TBM needed to be sup-plied as ready-to-bore within a 12-month period after the contract was awarded to Robbins.

IN conducting the manufacture of extruded brass rods and brass forgings it has been noticed that there is considerable variation in the physical properties, particularly the machinability of different rods and forgings, even though the composition, working temperatures and method of manufacture remain the same. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish the cause and extent of this variation, and also to determine whether variations in composition within certain defined limits influence hardness and machinability to any marked degree. The writer believes that this variation probably is due to the variation in grain size of the metal, therefore the microstructure of several compositions under various conditions of working were examined in an effort to establish this as a fact.

"The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. This paper exposes why such operational excellence could neither be attained nor proved without a state of the art metal accounting system. This should impact not only how metal accounting systems are audited/designed/refactored, but also how flotation plants are designed.IntroductionBecause representative metal accounting is a vital source of information for the financial accounts of a mining/metallurgical company, the need for a code on metal accounting was recognized in 2001 and a team was formed in 2003, under the sponsorship of several major mining houses, to produce such a code. A Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is being planned at the site of the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, under the sponsorship of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the US Department of Energy (DOE). This national facility will host a variety of multidisciplinary science and engineering experiments including physics experiments that require shielding from cosmogenic radiation. Geotechnical mapping was performed in 2010 in large excavations of the Davis Campus at the 4850 Level of the former Homestake Mine. LIDAR mapping included laser scanning using a red light laser scanner and 288 Mpixels 360° still camera. The resulting vector map with the photographs digitally draped over the model, was used to create an accurate, virtual model of the excavations. For model verification, the laser scanning was accompanied by surveying and manual mapping of the geology and rock structure. The immediate use of the model was to perform structural analysis and interpretation of geology needed for the design of the DUSEL?s super large excavations. The second round of scanning, after the application of shotcrete to the excavations walls, will be used as a technical blueprint to assess the effectiveness of shotcrete application.

Loveday (National Institute for Metallurgy, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa) - The paper and subsequent technical note' describing a method of determining the parameters of the three-parameter size-distribution equation developed in the paper were read with much interest. This equation was also used at National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) to describe size distributions in grinding tests, because it was necessary to have a single equation to describe the size distribution at any time during a test. A graphical method also was used to determine the three parameters, and the use of this method as an alternative to Professor Harris's latest method is discussed here. This article is a continuation of a series of publications by the authors on the international debate on resource nationalism, with specific reference to South Africa. Previous outcomes have shown that mine nationalization is not a solution for South Africa, and that maintaining stability of the current mineral and tax regimes is fundamental. It will not be wise to replace existing law and policy instruments until there is a better understanding of the distinction between fact and public perception about the impact of the current system. The new scheme of state custodianship linked to a mining royalty that effectively targets economic rents provides for effective resource use. The methodology in this article is to consider how South Africa's mineral tax regime can be tweaked to achieve optimal management and benefit from mineral extraction and associated rents by avoiding changes feared by investors. The major finding is that the current suite of instruments can be considered a suitable platform for optimal management of resource rents. However, it will be necessary to first investigate ways of improving the mineral beneficiation intent of the royalty structure, and secondly investigate whether the mineral rent portion of the royalty formula can be ring-fenced for the purpose of establishing a sovereign wealth fund.

This report describes the study of factors which affect medium voltage (661 - 1000 volts) trailing cable splices used in underground coal mines. Improvements in quality, dependability, and design of splice kits and shop splices are presented in the study results and recommended guidelines and regulations. Recommended research programs are included which describe approaches for development of the recommended guidelines and regulations for medium voltage trailing cable splices. The basis for the conclusions and recommendations presented in this report is included in three appendices which describe a survey, splice examination, and general requirements development prepared during the progress of this study.

Flotation operations in Sudbury, Ontario, seeking to separate pentlandite and chalcopyrite from mixed sulphide deposits, produce pyrrhotite tailings that have been disposed of in tailings ponds for over 50 years. These reactive tailings are viewed as waste, despite containing ~0.8 wt% Ni, and represent an environmental liability because of their acid mine drainage (AMD) potential. Given the large quantities of pyrrhotite currently stored in Sudbury, and declining ore grades elsewhere, these tailings have shifted from being viewed as a waste to a potential resource. Recent advances in the bioleaching of low-grade sulphide ores have raised the prospect of bioleaching as a potential low-cost processing option. However optimization of this proposed process requires a thorough understanding of the mineralogy of the pyrrhotite tailings that would be leached. The work presented here addresses the characterization of two distinct Sudbury pyrrhotite tailings, namely from the Vale and Glencore operations, using electron microprobe, XRD and QEMSCAN analysis. Particular focus is given to how the mineralogy may affect bioleaching as a processing option, through the deportment of nickel and the various phases present

The extraction of ore in panel caving operations also involves the coextraction of non-economic material, known as dilution. Forecasting, avoiding, and understanding the mechanics of dilution is critical to longterm planning. The models of dilution that are currently in use in panel caving operations are those by Laubscher (1994), who postulated that dilution is due to gravitational flow and depends on the height of interaction, the column height, and the draw uniformity. This paper presents a back-analysis of extraction and dilution behaviour at Codelco?s El Salvador and Andina Divisions, which use panel caving as a mining method. This analysis was conducted in order to review the existent dilution entry mechanisms and calculation methods. Three sources of dilution were identified. The first source is ?gravitational dilution?, which is due to gravitational flow and mixing as dilution migrates by gravity from a sector located above the panel under analysis. The second source of dilution is ?caving dilution?, which occurs when an air gap is formed in a large area and a sudden propagation of a hang-up occurs, inducing early ingress of waste into the production level from a level above. The third mode observed is ?lateral dilution?, which occurs when the panel is located next to an exhausted sector and the broken material enters the draw column early during draw. In the last two cases, dilution could migrate large distances horizontally. The mine data indicated that draw and caving strategy are key for long-term planning of large panel caves.

The efficiency of an ore-processing unit depends on the consistency of the characteristics of raw material entering the plant. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality, the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to feeding to the processing plant. The homogenization can generally be achieved by the bed blending operation. Given that the stockpiling and reclamation processes are very expensive, it is necessary to design the process in such a way as to minimize variabilities of specified properties of raw material. In this paper, for alternative stacking types, optimal stockpile geometry is found in three stages: First, stockpile input is simulated by sequential Gaussian simulation, and then the variance reduction ratios (VRR) as a criterion of stockpile efficiency are calculated for various stockpile geometry scenarios by a stockpile simulator written in FORTRAN. Second, multiple regression analysis is performed to model the VRR by the use of stockpile length, the number of layers and stacker speed as the independent variables. Finally, the model is an optimization problem. Decision variables are the stockpile length, the number of layers, stacker speed and stacking type. The genetic algorithms (GA) are used to minimize the VRR. The approach was demonstrated on data from an iron orebody. The problem was to reduce fluctuations of iron, silica, alumina and lime contents in the stockpile output. The results showed that the approach could be used for the bed blending design efficiently. The Nam San copper-gold deposit was discovered in 2011 and is a likely blind extension of the Permian age Phu Kham structurally deformed porphyry/skarn copper-gold deposit.The Nam San mineralisation is hosted within a dominantly sericite altered schist unit located to the north of the current Phu Kham open pit operation and is overthrust by an allochthonous barren cover sequence of limestone, granite and sandstone. Reinterpretation of the Phu Kham geology developed the concept of a possible telescoped porphyry copper-gold system at depth. Initial drilling intersected remobilised copper mineralisation in a basal conglomerate, confirming the concept. A reconnaissance vector array induced polarisation (IP) survey identified a deep chargeability anomaly from which a drilling target was developed from 3D inversion modelling of a detailed follow up dipole-pole-dipole anomaly. Drilling of the chargeability anomaly intersected the blind Nam San copper-gold mineralisation beneath the thrusted cover sequence.The key discovery parameters are the result of an integrated exploration program that included reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy, which developed the concept of a deep blind orebody, IP surveys capable of penetrating through the barren cover and a commitment to a deep directional drilling program to test these concepts and targets. Computer simulations were carried out using calcium ferrite slags containing 25 wt% CaO, and the results compared with those obtained using fayalite slags. There was little difference in overall elimination of Pb and Bi, but elimination of Sb and As was much lower with calcium ferrite slag. When calcium ferrite slag is used only in the converting stage and fayalite slag in the smelting stage, as in the Mitsubishi process, the contents of Sb and As in the blister copper can be kept to reasonable levels. This allows advantage to be taken of the considerably higher iron oxide-holding capacity of calcium ferrite slag than of fayalite slag at the high oxygen potential under converting conditions, thus preventing precipitation of magnetite. Satisfactory agreement was obtained between predicted values and observed data from a Mitsubishi converter
