Economic Importance of Gasification of Fuel and Brief Outline of Development of Underground Gasification of Coal in the U.S.S.R. The underground gasification of fuel offers a number of economic and social advantages, principally the following: 1. Full automation of labor-consuming coal-mining processes, which resist complex mechanization and automation, particularly shaft mining. 2. Elimination of hard, dangerous, and often unhealthful mining work. 3. Creation of hygienic conditions for personnel employed in gas production, as well as for those in boiler rooms using the gas. 4. Possibility of automation of complex production processes of thermal-electric powerplants using underground gas with economic installations for steam production. 5. Economic operation of thermal-electric powerplants constructed in the areas of underground-gas production. 6. Release of railroads from the burden of transporting fuel. 7. Extension of the power base of some areas in need of fuel and of the economy as a whole due to use of fuel deposits not amenable to normal mining practices. 8. Reduction of capital investments per unit of energy produced in the form of fuel. 9. Substantial increase in general labor productivity. 10. Possibility of substantial reduction in the cost of fuel produced and of electric power produced from underground gas.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Big Gossan mine is operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and is one of the largest stope-and-fill mining systems in the world. The Big Gossan deposit is a ~200 m wide, 1200 m long and 500 m high steeply north-east-dipping to subvertical skarn body at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Ekmai-Waripi contact. The copper-gold mineralisation, with a 1.3 per cent copper equivalent cut-off grade, occurs mainly proximal to the Ekmai-Waripi contact in the garnet-clinopyroxene prograde skarn at the base of the Tertiary Waripi formation and partly distal to the contact in the tremolite-actinolite retrograde skarn of the Tertiary Waripi formation.The Big Gossan stope mine is designed from 2540 m to 3020 m above sea level. Present active stoping operations occur at level 2540 mL to level 2640 mL and are done in a primary and secondary stoping sequence. The width and length of the stopes is 15 m and 20 m respectively, while the height of the stope varies between 20 m and 40 m, depending on the ground conditions. The stability of the stopes is visualised in the Mathew’s Stope Stability graphs. These graphs and actual Cavity Measurement Scanner measurements on the stope will predict and show the overbreak and underbreak, which affect the reconciliation of the mined stope and also the pillar stability between the primary stopes. Stripping of Fe (III) from D2EHPA Using Different Reagents The common way to extract Fe(III) from an organic solvent is by using concentrated acidic solutions. The stripping of Fe(III) from organic solvent Di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) by hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions has been found to increase with increasing the acid concentration. However, the use of a concentrated acidic solution such as 6 M HCl can degrade the organic molecules. In this research, to increase the efficiency of Fe(III) stripping from D2EHPA, effect of some acids, salts and buffer solutions was studied. Influence of Tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) as modifier on the Fe(III) stripping operation was also investigated. According to the results, the best Fe stripping recovery was achieved in the presence of low acid concentration and the salts which was 72.4 per cent oxalic acid, 70 per cent ammonium oxalate and 75 per cent buffer of oxalic acid and ammonium oxalate. The results also showed a better recovery in the presence of the buffer rather than the salt. Finally, increasing the concentration of TBP, HCl and H2SO4 resulted in a higher stripping efficiency of Fe(III). However, in the presence of oxalic acid and its salts increasing the reagent concentration did not increase the stripping efficiency and at this condition, the recovery of iron remained constant.

In 1930 the Bureau of Mines published a description3/ f the concentrating process of the Magma Copper Co. as it had been developed to that time and was then employed. The prevent paper revises the description to the end of 1943 and includes a description of the smelting processes. Data from the mild and smelter operations for, 1942 are given in tables 1 to 14, Billing costs are included, but it is not permissible to publish smelter costs.

The attapulgite industry saw a year of solid growth after a weaker 2003. Demand was up between 5 percent and 6 percent driven by almost all of the key markets. Construction continued to show record new housing demand, assisted by continued low interest rates. That drove strong growth in construction related markets like coatings, tape joint compounds and other construction materials applications. The agricultural markets rebounded modestly to increase sales for suspension fertilizers, animal feeds and pesticide carriers. Oil drilling also showed strong growth due to high oil and gas prices. Sales to molecular sieve applications grew due to petrochemical and construction demand. The export markets were assisted by further depreciation of the dollar. The only weak area was in nonagricultural granular sorbents, where other sorbent materials continued to dominate.

This study explores two evolving 3D surveying technologies, photogrammetry and laser scanning, and applies them to deformation monitoring of rock faces and mine highwalls. A quantitative analysis focused on 3D coordinate determination is performed. Furthermore, a qualitative assessment directed at the practicality and viability of each system operating near a rock face or in a mining operation is undertaken to reveal one systemÆs deficiencies over the other. Two photogrammetric and four laser scanning surveys aimed at optimising accuracy and precision within a short period of data acquisition are conducted on the rock face at Organ Pipes National Park, Keilor, Victoria. The accuracy and repeatability of each survey is determined using a combination of iWitness photogrammetric, and Cyclone laser scanning software. The 3D coordinates of targets placed on the rock face are determined by triangulation and resection principles within a bundle adjustment. The coordinates determined by each system are then compared in a 3D transformation. Controlled deformation conditions are established to determine the precision to which each system can detect movement in the rock face. An object of known dimensions is placed on the rock face to simulate deformation. The relative orientation of images taken for the pre- and post-deformation photogrammetric surveys provide an overall 3D point accuracy of 1.255 mm and 1.804 mm respectively. A 3D transformation shows discrepancies of less than ¦22 mm (RMS) between the geometry of the photogrammetric and laser scanning models. Both systems are able to detect the simulated deformation to a precision of 50 mm. This work also identifies how to obtain millimetre accuracy for 3D coordinate determination of rock faces, thereby providing a quality data set for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists. Photogrammetry is shown to be a mobile, time and cost-effective technique that is more amenable to mining operations than terrestrial laser scanning. However, both systems demonstrate that they are capable of detecting movements that may lead to failures in the rock face, and possibly endangering human life. The implications are significant for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists working in mining operations where enhanced safety conditions, increased productivity and lower operational costs are important considerations.

This report presents the results of a study of mill tailings disposal practices and potential tailings dam stability problems. Recognizing the long period of time that would be required to develop the technology and practices necessary to significantly improve refuse disposal safety, the Bureau initiated this research effort as a first step in that development. Volume 1 includes a summary of conclusions and recommendations resulting from the overall research effort; discussions of disposal systems and methods, geology, seismicity, hydrology, and materials characteristics; evaluations of investigational techniques; discussions of usable interim generalized investigational, analytical and inspection procedures; discussion of general principles and presentation of a tailings technology manual outline; and discussion of needed future research am recommended programs.

"The Strathcona Concentrator operations, the application of control systems in the crushing, flotation and tailing fill sections, and current and future computer control concepts are described in this paper.The computer has been used for reporting and monitoring roles and operating the on-stream analyzer since start up of the mill in 1968, while over the past twenty months, it has been used for process control. The systems which have been developed include:1. The blending of pentlandite concentrate with pyrrhotite concentrate to produce a special product of constant nickel analysis.2. The blending of cement with tailing fill to produce backfill of consistent cement content.3. The supervisory control of xanthate, frother and pH to the flotation circuits to maintain the nickel copper concentrate grade within narrow limits.IntroductionThe Strathcona Concentrator is currently treating 7,200 tons per day of an ore which contains nickel associated with the minerals pentlandite (28 -32% Ni) and pyrrhotite (0.3 -1.0% Ni). The ratio of the nickel minerals varies from 4 to 15 parts of pyrrhotite to 1 part of pentlandite over the orebody. The production of a high grade concentrate re4uires the separation of this small quantity of .oentlandite from the much greater proportion of pyrrhotite and gangue and is complicated by the presence of two pyrrhotite minerals differing in nickel content, floatability and magnetic susceptibility."

About 180 000 tons of explosives are used annually underground in South Africa. Most is loaded into holes less than 50mm in diameter. 75% is consumed in the gold and platinum mines where holes are between 25 and 4omm in diameter and no more than 3.0m in length. The small amount of explosives per hole with extreme conditions of heat, humidity and seismic activity, make the choice of explosive on safety and technical grounds very important to the success of a blasting operation. Taken together with the fact that many underground precious metal operations are now marginal then the choice of an explosive, when its price is also considered, becomes critical to the very viability of some mines.

The resultant load vector is the representation of the forces applied to a longwall roof support element by caving strata into a single, quantifiable measure of support resistance. The relatively complex kinematics of the shield support prohibit a determination of support resistance simply by summation of leg forces. A method is being investigated by the Bureau of Nines to determine the resultant load vector by instrumenting supports with pressure transducers and strain gages to measure leg, canopy capsule, and lemnisoate link forces. This concept has been laboratory tested in the Bureau's Nine Roof Simulator. Functional relationships among variables have been assessed, and confidence intervals have been established for prediction of the resultant load vector parameters.

Sheeted vein gold deposits are characterised by multiple subparallel veins and often free milling gold. Variability in gold grade and recovery parameters are enhanced by poorly designed sampling and test work protocols. Poor quality samples generally equate to an enhanced nugget effect. A sample can be described as being representative when it results in acceptable levels of bias and precision. Total sampling variability can be quantified by the relative sampling variance, which measures the total empirical sampling variance influenced by the heterogeneity of the lot being sampled under the current sampling / test work protocol. Effort should be made to minimise the relative sampling variance through Theory of Sampling (TOS) and quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) application. This contribution reports on a case study that exemplifies how high-quality grade and recovery data can be gained from a well-designed and planned drilling, sampling and test work program, followed by bulk sampling. Results across historical resource drilling, geometallurgical drilling, laboratory assay / test work, geometallurgical modelling and a bulk sampling/pilot processing study are reconciled. A whole core, entire-sample test work protocol was used to acquire fit-for-purpose gold grade and recovery data for inclusion into a Pre Feasibility Study reported in accordance with the JORC Code.CITATION:Dominy, S C, O’Connor, L, Xie, Y and Glass, H J, 2017. In choosing the subject for my address to you this evening I was actuated by the knowledge that in the past Australian metallurgical problems have been solved by the introduction of extremely interesting processes. Frequently such processes originated in this country, or at least were first adopted here on a large scale.Chronologically there comes to mind the application of chlorination to the Mount Morgan ores from 1888 onwards.Then the application of pyritic smelting to the Mount Lyell ore body in 1896, followed closely by the successful flotation of zinc blendÇ! at Broken Hill, about 1900, and the treatment of the refractory Kalgoorlie gold ores by roasting and cyaniding. With the development of the differential flotation process at Broken Hill came the production of a slime lead concentrate carrying zinc which necessitated the use of a high zinc slag in the lead smelting process. Although previously considered impossible, the necessarytechnique was successfully evolved at Port Pirie resulting in the accumulation of large tonnages of zinc-bearing slag as potential sources of that metal. The past twenty years have witnessed:-(a) The establishment of a flourishing iron and steel industry, with its attendant coking and by-product plant at two centres in New South Wales, namely, Newcastle and Port Kembla.(b) The establishment of an electrolytic zinc process at Risdon in Tasmania.*Presidential Address, Melbourne, 20th August, 1936.

"COREM has developed, specifically for the mineral industry, a mobile laboratory using the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) technique. It has been used to perform onstream analysis (OSA) of the chemical composition of slurries in both gold-ore and iron-ore processing plants. Industrial tests have been carried out respectively at La Mine Doyon (Cambior), a gold-ore processing plant near Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, and at QCM's iron-ore pelletizing plant in Port-Cartier, Quebec. The aim was to demonstrate that the LIBS technique is capable of providing information that meets the needs for process control. C, Si, Ca, Mg, Mn and Al were the elements targeted on iron ore while Cu, Fe, Ag and Au were targeted for gold ore. The results obtained meet or exceed the requirements for process control and consequently clearly show that the LIBS technique is suitable for industrial applications.The feasibility of OSA, through in-plant validations using COREM’s LIBS mobile laboratory, has been demonstrated in four essential aspects: slurry sampling, LIBS chemical measurement, robustness for continuous operation, and functionality for industrial operators.INTRODUCTIONThere is a general need for optimization in the mineral industry. Process control is a favoured means to achieve this goal (McKee 1991). Real-time knowledge of process status is the key to effective control (Da Silva 1994). Only a few techniques, such as XRF, NMR and digital imaging, are currently amenable to chemically monitor industrial processes (Braden 2002). LIBS is an emerging technique with appealing characteristics for on-line and real-time measurement of bulk material (Lorenzen 1992, Palanco 2000). While our ultimate goal is to provide our industrial partners with performing monitoring tools, a shorter-viewed objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of developing a LIBS system for OSA. The LIBS technique has shown interesting capabilities for measuring solids, liquids, dusts and gases. Our work has focused on mineral slurries (Barrette 1999 and 2001, Turmel 1999). Special equipment is needed to perform in-plant validations. A mobile laboratory based on the LIBS technology has been assembled for this task."

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines dealt with the toxicity of dichlorodifluoromethane5, a new refrigerant that has a remarkably low toxicity. Continued research by the Prigidaire Corporation6 and toxicological experiments performed in the Laboratory of Applied Physiology of the University of Cincinnati7 revealed another organic fluoride, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, whose toxicity also appeared to be of a very low order and whose physical-and chemical properties make it suitable for refrigeration purposes. In addition to low toxicity, safety in its use is further enhanced by its physical properties, which permit the design of equipment that operates at comparatively low pressures and hence mitigates the dangers and problems of leakage. The investigation described in this report was performed by the Bureau of Mines at the request and with the cooperation of the Frigidaire Corporation.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Bachelor of Engineering-Mining Venetia Mine, an open-pit diamond mining operation in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, currently has a mixed haul truck fleet consisting of Caterpillar 785B and C; 789C; modified 793D and 793D. Even in an ideal situation these trucks have different cycle times, which causes queuing at the loading area and their different speeds cause bunching on the ramps, leading to higher overall cycle times and lower productivity. This problem was identified but the root causes of the problem were not investigated and quantified. A time and motion study on the haul trucks was thus undertaken to measure actual cycle times and compare them to ideal cycle times as well as to observe any reasons for deviations. Ideal cycle times are partly evaluated on the basis of simulation and partly from production optimization expert input. Several areas that affect production were identified and these include: haul road conditions, the control room, dispatching programme and dispatching data management, as well as truck-shovel matching. The investigation was important in establishing control parameters for haul fleet operation since time spent queuing is production time lost, which defers waste tonnes to later in the life of mine, thus decreasing the tempo at which kimberlite is exposed.

"Electricity as a means of transmitting power was introduced in coal mines of the United States about 1891 for both haulage and coal cutting, only a few years after electrical haulage was first installed on street cars. At first, the hazards of electrical ignition ere not appreciated and the general use of open lights and black blasting powder made the possibility of electrical ignition of fire damp seem small by comparison.5 The possibility of igniting coal dust directly by electric sparks or arcs had not been considered.In the nine years prior to 1900, the progress of introducing electricity underground was slow, except that it was used for lighting shaft bottoms. Electricity had to contend with the more general use of compressed air for coal-cutting machines and, in mainline haulage, with the use of mule-teams and endless and tail-rope systems. During this period, great improvements were made in electrical apparatus, in surface installations as well as in mines. By 1900, therefore, the technique of applying electricity in mines had so far developed that it rapidly drove out the use of compressed air in coal mines because of the comparative ease of its installation and the marked economic advantages of its use over that of compressed air in practically all kinds of mining machines except percussion. rock drills.At this time, however, little thought was given to the hazard of indiscriminate use of electricity causing explosions and fires, and the possibility of electricity causing direct ignition of coal dust had not been considered. On December6, 1907, however, the Monongah, West Va. mine explosion occurred. This was the greatest mine disaster this country has over had, 361 men being killed. Although: there was much diversity of opinion, as to the origin of the explosion, many well-informed engineers concluded that the cause was ignition of coal dust do to wreckage of a runaway trip in a rope haulage entrance slope. This slope also served as a ventilating and it extended from the level of the coal bed to the surface. The runaway trip tore down electric cables and stirred up a cloud of dust when it was wrecked at the bottom of the slope. The dust was probably ignited by the electric arcing that occurred when the wires were knocked down. (Another but less probable source of ignition was the open flames of miners lamps.) From the foot of the slops the explosion appeared to have travelled into the mine, spreading as it went. If this ignition of coal dust was the origin of the explosion, it occurred on pure intake air entering directly from the surface."

An attempt has been made in this investigation to define the conditions under which ammonium nitrate (AN) might detonate as a result of involvement in fire. The initiation of detonation by shocks derived from explosives or from projectile impact was investigated as a function of temperature and charge diameter. A new technique was devised to investigate the burning of raw and contaminated AN under pressure. No transition, to detonation in AN was obtained in the burning experiments. The critical diameter for detonation of fertilizer-grade AN was found to be quite small when the AN was at temperatures just below melting point; this indicates that initiation of detonation may be less difficult at elevated temperatures but such initiation by gas-phase detonation was shown to be unlikely. Transition from burning to detonation was obtained with AN intimately mixed with fuels that included polyethyl-ene, paper, and fuel oil when these were contained in vessels with restricted vents. However, the experimental results supported by an analytical study indicate that the initiation of detonation in AN from fire exposure in normal storage and from transportation incidents is quite improbable. The detonation of AN in recent incidents more likely may have resulted from the effects of adjacent explosions.
