During the past three and a half years considerable improvement in the techniques of solution extraction of salt has been made by the use of wells which are cross-connected by hydraulic fracture at the base of the salt. Fracture is initiated by the application of hydraulic pressure. Underreaming and perforating techniques are used to control initiation. The fracture is then extended by continuous pumping until a pressure communication is obtained. Pressure communication is followed by washing-through to obtain a low-pressure connection. Well construction using non-shrinking cements that will bond with the salt and with associated strata is essential to the process. The connecting procedure described permits solution to attack the salt deposit from its base upward, thereby permitting greater recovery, fewer well repairs, better saturation of brine, and overall economy of development and operation. The fracture method of cross-connection requires special pumping of the fluid and is limited by present experience to initial well spacings up to about 1200 feet. The method has been used in bedded salts and is applicable for wells in salt domes. Since spring of 1956, new developnents in salt extraction wells have followed procedures substantially different from those in prior use. Although multiple well systems, connected either by the natural consequence of the solution process or by undercutting under protective pads, have been used previously, the past three and a half years have brought about new designs and new operation procedures based on cross-connection of the wells using hydraulic fracture. To date these techniques have been applied largely in the bedded salt deposits of Michigan, Ontario, Ohio, West Virginia, and New York. To the writers' knowledge they have not been used in salt dome wells. The methods have not yet been in use for a sufficient period to permit any statistical comparison with the older methods. It is evident from experience to date that the methods result in higher recoveries, lower capital and operating costs, better saturation of produced brine, reduced well maintenance and repair, and in considerably fewer production units to insure

Ordinary kriging on the assumption of a gaussian error distribution and indicator kriging were used to derive the probability that a given calorific value would or would not be exceeded by coal from an area of a deposit. The two techniques led to similar probability maps despite local differences; the lack of an absolute reference makes it impossible to judge which method is better for this particular application

Surface subsidence events induced by underground longwall coal mining operations can cause various disturbances to surface structures ranging from integrity and stability to functionality problems. Highway bridges, as a kind of special road construction that can only tolerate smaller movements and deformations than road pavements, are particularly susceptible to severe influence caused by subsidence-induced ground movements and deformations. However, based on accurate subsidence prediction and correct influence assessments, efficient and effective mitigation and remediation measures can be designed and implemented to ensure the continuous service of bridges, safety of the travelers and smooth mining operations. In this paper, based on the predicted final and dynamic surface movements and deformations, the techniques to assess subsidence influence on the integrity, stability and functionality of bridge structures (e.g., decks, beams, abutments, etc.) are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the bridge structures are recommended along with an actual application case.

Alkaline leaching with sodium carbonate solution adjusted to pH 9·5 to 10·0 preferentially dissolves thorium from a mixture of rare earth and thorium hydroxides. Rare earth sodium carbonates form in the alkaline leaching stage.These are converted to rare earth oxides for use as optical and ophthalmic polishing agents. Quadrivalent cerium is extracted under similar alkaline leaching conditions.INTRODUCTIONAustralia has made significant contributions to mineral chemistry and mineral dressing. As often happens with an industrially immature country, research investigations often outstrip the ability or desire of commerce to exploit them. It is wrong to think exclusively in terms of export of raw materials. Imagination assists in developing world trends. The chemical utilization of mineral sands has interested a group of investigators, chiefly at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.) and, more recently, in the mining industry itself. From an international point of view the highlight of this work was Newnham's (1960) process for the separation of hafnium from zirconium. Earlier work at C.S.I.R.O. investigated the chlorination of rutile, zircon, and monazite. Assuming that titanium tetrachloride would be available in large quantities in the post war years, extensive work was done by Kraitzer, McTaggart, and Winter (1948) on organic compounds of titanium. This work led to the development of heat resistant paints, plastic compositions, and improved organic protective coatings that predated overseas work by up to seven years. (Post, Shiihara and Schwartz, 1961; Anon, 1955). Contributions were made to the production of refractory hard metals (Kraitzer, 1949; Kraitzer and Newnham, 1956). Pilkington and Wylie (1947) and Urie (1947) investigated the production of rare earths from monazite by an acid process.

"The mining industry is currently facing challenges with declining feed grades and is struggling to find solutions to improve the project’s economic value. By means of pre-concentration, ore sorting aims to separate the barren material from the valuable ore to reduce energy consumption and tailings generation, while increasing the feed grade, concentrate grade, mill recovery, and revenue. In addition, ore sorting allows the modification of deposit geometallurgy in order to allow the creation of an optimal mill feed.This paper evaluates the applicability and challenges of ore sorting by utilizing the results from four different mines, and reviews them in detail. The mines include two underground and two open pit mines that are base metal and precioius metal operations. In order to understand the applicability of ore sorting in these operations, initial rock-by-rock test results and different types of assays (atomic adsorption [AA], inductively coupled plasma [ICP], and fire assay) are utilized. Using the assay results, the grade recovery curves for ore sorting are generated and they are further improved by using and developing an ore sorting algorithm, which is discussed in this paper. The application and evaluation of ore sorting in greenfield and brownfield properties will also be discussed.The state of the art ore sorting technologies for both rock-by-rock and bulk sorting are reviewed in this paper. The future technologies on the horizon, including different combinations of sensors, are explained. The sorting technologies include, X-ray transmission (XRT), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), colour, infrared, electromagnetic, and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS).IntroductionOre sorting is a sensor-based sorting technique introduced between the excavation stage and processing stage, where the unwanted waste is diverted to the waste dump and only the ore is sent to the mill for further processing. As a result, the quality of the material entering the mill is improved and the dilution of the ore is reduced. In greenfield projects, sensor-based ore sorting provides an opportunity to reduce the capital cost of the project and increase the return on investment (ROI). With most operations currently facing the challenge of finding a high grade deposit, having a sorting unit provides several advantages while keeping the cost at minimum."

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

INTRODUCTION Traditionally, the purpose of mine ventilation has been defined as diluting, rendering harmless, and sweeping away hazardous gases which may accumulate in the mine workings. In addition, the ventilation sys- tem must keep the mine air as close as possible to the composition of the outside air in order to provide a healthy environment for mineworkers and to prolong the useful life of mine equipment. When plans are being developed for opening a new mine, sound engineering dictates that a calculated estimate be made of both the maximum air quantity requirement and the accept- able mine pressure (head) loss related to the under- ground layout and projections. For efficient mine ventilation, the two problem areas that demand constant attention are (1) the control of fugitive air (through short circuiting or leakage) and (2) the provision of ample airway capacity. Fugitive air is that quantity of air which enters the mine but short-circuits the mine ventilation system through improperly constructed stoppings, doors, overcasts, etc.; it represents an investment in power consumption (to move the air by the fan) while providing little, if any, return on the investment. Typically, efficient mines are those that can deliver 50% of the air handled by their fans to the working faces. Paying close attention to a new mine's ventilation system at the outset can provide numerous benefits during the later stages of mine development. It has often been noted that the main cause of trouble in many mine ventilation systems can be found within a radius of 2500 ft from the fan installation. Ample airway capacity is essential to maintain the mine's head loss within manageable limits. Similar to an industrial ventilation setting, the mine's headings are the ductwork for the handling of air. The difference between normal industrial ventilation and mine ventilation is apparent when more capacity is needed; a plant can install new or larger ductwork, but it is difficult for a mine to install new entries or enlarge existing entries. Air velocities are usually maintained under 800 fpm to limit the stirring up of dust in the intakes. With this in mind, it is usually simple to estimate the number of entries required in the ventilation system. The problem that often arises, though, is when the system's capacity is overestimated and the required head loss to achieve the desired quantity is excessive. Experience has shown that problems are often encountered when the mine's condition requires much more than three inches of water gage to ventilate the mine on a day-to-day basis. Thus, if proper attention is not paid to these parameters in the preplanning and initial development of a new mine, it may take an extremely high water gage to achieve the ultimate quantity. This chapter will not delve deeply into the theory of mine ventilation; many other books have been writ- ten on that subject. Instead, the following sections will point out the important considerations that should take place before the development of a mine ventilation system, as they relate to normal industry practice. FUNDAMENTALS OF AIRFLOW Volume Versus Water Gage The common method of measuring ventilation pressure is in terms of inches of water gage (wg); one inch of water corresponds to a pressure of 5.2 psf (pounds per square foot). Further, airflow follows a square-law relationship between volumes and pressures where, as shown in the previous section, a doubling of quantity requires a quadrupling of pressure. Table 1 shows how heads and quantities are related. Using Table 1, it is readily apparent that, for the same mining conditions, an increase in pressure from one inch wg to three inches wg results in only 34,640 cfm when the initial quantity is 20,000 cfm. Pressure Losses Pressure losses in mine ventilation systems are caused by friction between the heading walls and the air stream and by shock losses due to abrupt changes of the air stream caused by obstructions. The common pressure-loss formula for mine ventilation is: [ ] where H is the pressure loss in inches of water gage, K is the coefficient of friction, L is the length of the airway in feet, 0 is the airway perimeter in feet, V is the air velocity in feet per minute, and A is the cross-sectional area of the airway in square feet. Table 2 lists the US Bureau of Mines schedule of friction factors (K) for mine airways. Recent research indicates that the values of K are slightly less for coal mines than those presented in the USBM Schedule, and Table 3 should be consulted in this instance. It should be

This publication contains highlights of a 4-hour lecture and demonstration by the Bureau of Mines on the fire and explosion hazards of flammable liquids and solids, oxidizing materials, corrosive liquids, and compressed gases. The authors first presented this material as part of a 2-week course given to officers and enlisted men at the U.S. Coast Guard's Dangerous-Cargo Handling School, established at Fort Eustis, Va., in 1959. The Bureau was asked to present the lecture and demonstration because of the extensive experience of its researchers in handling certain harardous commodities.

Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. Relationships identified between existing BID mineralisation, geology and structure has aided in targeting additional mineralisation across the tenement and highlighted other previously untested areas that warrant further investigation.CITATION:Tylkowski, L N, Corlis, N J, McDonald, G D, Petts, A E, Jennings, M F and Thomas, B J, 2013. The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine is one of the future underground mines of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). Located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the GBC mine is scheduled to start production in 2017 reaching its peak production capacity of 160 000 t/d in 2023.In order to reach planned production capacity, the GBC mine will utilise an ore handling system consisting of rail haulage, crushing and conveying. The rail haulage system will utilise over 20 km of track while crushing is accomplished by way of three gyratory crushers each with a capacity of 3300 t/h. Nine conveyors operating in two parallel systems, each system over 3 km in length, will move the ore from the crushers to the stockpiles. These systems require a network of larger tunnels and mass excavations to accommodate the planned production facilities.This paper will describe the ore handling system, tunnel and mass excavation methodology as well as some of the challenges encountered with ground conditions and excavation quality during the execution of the project. A combination of lateral and vertical development methodologies and equipment, including drill jumbos, mechanised raise climbers and specialised ground support equipment, have proven successful in the development of a quality ore handling system.CITATION:Pasek, I, Firdausi, H and Chenier, T, 2016. "Concepts of linear elastic fracture mechanics were applied to study two cases of failure, namely an equalizing beam from a tandem rear axle of a highway tractor unit and the main beam of a flat bed trailer. In the first case, the presence of a crack, initiated by stress corrosion cracking followed by significant fatigue crack propagation produced a state of stress which was sufficient to produce brittle failure. Calculation of the fatigue life agreed with the number of cycles that the structure experienced before final fracture. In the second case, it was demonstrated that a combination of low temperature and high loading rate was sufficient to cause brittle fracture.IntroductionFailure analysis of engineering components has generally been carried out without the benefit of fracture mechanics. It is generally understood that real structures inevitably contain internal or surface flaws which under an applied load, may propagate to fracture. Fracture mechanics relates the applied stresses to the crack size in specified geometries. Since its introduction approximately thirty years ago, fracture mechanics has evolved as a design philosophy which can be used to develop fracture-safe designs. It can be also applied in analysis of failures, to ascertain if sound design and fabrication methods have been used."

IN INDUSTRIAL and domestic daily life carbon monoxide is the most frequently encountered toxic gas. hazardous concentrations of carbon monoxide may be present in the vicinity of many industrial operations, such as metallurgical processes, coke ovens, and fuel- and synthesis-gas producers, and may be encountered in confined spaces, such as dwellings, garages, workshops, vehicular tunnels, and mining operations, in connection with the use of heaters, boilers, internal-combustion engines, after blasting operations, and after fires and explosions. Evaluation and control of the health and safety hazard caused by carbon monoxide depend primarily on the analytical detection of the presence of carbon monoxide and determination of its concentration in air and in various gaseous mixtures. The choice of method of analysis in any particular situation depends on such factors as required accuracy, range of concentration involved, convenience, speed of analysis required, quantity of sample available, qualitative composition of sample or atmosphere to be analyzed, and possible effects of interfering gases. Some of the methods described require only adequate understanding of operational techniques, whereas others require thorough appreciation and skill in applying the principles involved. The instruments and analytical procedures commonly used for detecting and determining carbon monoxide are described in detail, and reference is made to more specialized methods:

Mineralogy and coproponents Sino Iron, International Minerals and Austeel are in the process of developing four world class magnetite iron ore mines with multiple open pits along a 25 km strike length of Brockman Iron Formation to the south of Cape Preston on the West Pilbara coast. The close proximity of the proposed pits raises some challenging project approvals and environmental management issues relating to the impacts of dewatering at individual projects and the cumulative impacts of progressive development on local and regional groundwater resources, which includes a large fresh water aquifer system in the Fortescue River alluvium.This paper presents an outline of the hydro-environmental impact assessment process adopted and the key result that the cumulative impacts of dewatering at all four projects on the local brackish groundwater system in the basement rocks is only marginally more than the impact of any one project on its own, and that the impact on the Fortescue River alluvium aquifer is negligible. The paper also presents an outline of the proposed integrated water management approach that will involve coordinated monitoring, ongoing impact assessment and management, and reporting programs for all projects.

"The adoption of high-pressure grinding throughout the cement industry has yielded enormous savings in energy and wear material costs. There are also a number of installations, which are applied in iron ore and kimberlite processing operations. High pressure grinding offers the same potential for energy and media savings, as well as opportunities for improved, downstream metallurgical performance, in hard rock mineral processing. This paper focuses on developments in machine design and wear surface engineering for high-pressure grinding of the hard rock ores in the mineral processing industry.INTRODUCTIONIn the early eighties 3.4 % of the world electric energy was consumed for crushing and grinding operations of minerals and 0.6 % in the ore dressing industry. During that time using a laboratory press Prof. Schönert found that interparticle comminution at high pressure requires remarkably less energy as conventional grinding technologies. In grinding of cement clinker he expected energy savings between 33 and 50 % compared to ball mills [1]. Piston presses are limited in throughput. Thus, the principle of interparticle comminution was adapted by the use of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) to a continuous plant process. Figure 1 shows the main components of a roller press: The roller nip of width s is formed between the floating roller (1) and the fixed roller (2). A diverse selection of rockbolt designs and resin anchors are available for use in underground mines. Research in recent years at the UNSW Mining Research Centre led to the construction of a rockbolt pull-testing facility. This facility has subsequently been upgraded, commissioned and initial test work has been completed to verify the pull-test process. A test program has been completed with the objective to understand the load transfer mechanism and improve the general performance of rockbolts. This paper describes the results of this research. This Bureau of Mines report describes the evolution of modern-day blasting agent and slurry products and the state of the art of the usage of these products as it exists today. The steadily increasing consumption of blasting agents and slurries at the expense of cartridged high-explosive usage is related. Although safety is not covered in depth, reference is made to pertinent safety literature available. Product formulations, detonation reactions, and detonation products are discussed. Product terminology is defined and the significant differences between the relatively insensitive modern-day dry blasting agents and slurries and cap-sensitive high explosives are described. Blasting agent and slurry properties are discussed, as well as methods of determining and describing these properties, and specific types of products are also discussed with reference to their ingredients,-properties, and field applications. Increasing consumption of slurries, particularly in small-diameter boreholes, and the development of more cap-sensitive varieties of slurries are forecast although dry blasting agents should continue to dominate the market. The consumption of cartridged high explosives will level off or gradually decrease.

The Coffee Creek lode gold discoveries are located in the White Gold district (Dawson Range), west-central Yukon, 130 km south of Dawson City and 30 km south of the Golden Saddle gold deposit (Figure 1). Extensive structurally-controlled gold mineralization has been discovered during the 2010 and 2011 exploration drilling campaigns, highlighting this part of the Dawson Range as a significant emerging gold district. [ ] In this contribution we review the geological framework and describe the mineralization styles and metal signatures observed to date on the Coffee project. The main Coffee area is underlain by a 15 km by 4 km geochemical footprint, characterized by discrete linear gold-in-soil anomalies that correspond to various mineralized corridors. Of several mineralized areas tested in the past two drill seasons by diamond core and reverse-circulation (RC) drilling, we focus on the Supremo, Double Double, Latte and Kona zones; areas with the most information obtained from drilling thus far (Table 1; Figure 2).

When defining a ?megaproject,? one need only to look at Seattle, WA?s State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project. This $3.1-billion project is one of the largest of its kind in the world, and includes the use of the world?s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM). However, for as large as the Alaskan Way project is ? especially given the size of the TBM being used ? there are several other megaprojects underway around the world. Each has its own challenges that require innovative design techniques and financing arrangements, as well as variations on established tunneling technologies. So it was that 266 tunneling and underground construction professionals ? owners, contractors and engineers ? convened in Seattle in November for the Cutting Edge Conference on Megaprojects. This was the second joint meeting between the Underground Construction Association of SME and the North American Tunneling Journal. The first joint conference took place in April 2012 in Miami, FL and attracted 238 attendees. A third joint conference, to be held in 2014, is in the planning stage. The key reason Seattle was chosen as the site of the megaprojects conference is the Alaskan Way Viaduct project. Before the conference began, many of the attendees were able to visit the project and get a close look at Bertha, the Hitachi Zosen earth pressure balance TBM that is boring the tunnel. In addition, the conference included an exhibit that attracted 20 industry suppliers, up from 10 the previous year in Miami. The 25 presentations during the two-day conference covered all aspects of the tunneling and underground construction of megaprojects. Topics included the Alaskan Way Viaduct project; considerations for procurement and contracting; political risk, financing and insurance; international megaprojects; risk and risk sharing and project delivery. Each session concluded with panel discussions.

As a result of the world depression and the consequent heavy fall in the price of tin, Malaya joined with other great tin producing: countries of the world in a restriction scheme that heavily restricted production from its individual mines. This condition, together with the knowledge that it was becoming more and more difficult in, Malaya to acquire further areas and so prolong the existence of a specific company's activities, induced Mr. H. G. Scott, managing director for the Siamese Tin Syndicate Ltd., to consider other possible sources of production. Mainly because of the conditions that obtained in Tasmania, he turned his attention to that country, where, not only could mining be carried on without restriction as to output, but where the incidence of the exchange position created favourable conditions for operation. The district selected for examination was that of St. Helens, on the East Coast of Tasmania, which district had behind it a long record of successful tin mining operations.PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS OF SIAMESE TIN SYNDICATE LTD. Effective gas management in coal mines, as well as proper ventilation design, is very important for maintaining the safety of underground coal miners. Advances in numerical modeling techniques have enabled evaluations of the coal mining environment using advanced grid designs and computed gas distributions through detailed mathematical models. These models help engineers to see the unseen areas of the mine through visualization of the data and ultimately help improve worker safety. This paper summarizes the modeling efforts conducted by NIOSH in the U.S. and CSIRO in Australia to address various gas management issues encountered in longwall mines. The modeling studies involved two of the most widely used grid-based techniques, namely computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical reservoir modeling. This paper discusses the application of these techniques for gob inertization and gas control for spontaneous combustion, pre-mining degasification of coalbeds, gob gas venthole design and performance evaluation in longwalls, and gas management during development mining.
