This report describes laboratory studies by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the suitability of a static oxygen (OJ adsorption test for evaluating the self-heating tendencies of coals. Reliable minimum self-heating temperature (SHT) values from adiabatic oven tests were used as standards for comparison and evaluation. A suite of six coals was tested in the adiabatic oven and in sealed flasks. In the latter tests, both undried and dried samples, in a range of four particle sizes, were examined. Miniature pressure trans-ducers monitored pressures in the flasks, and gas samples taken at the end of the tests quantified all the gases present. An excellent correlation was found between the minimum SHT's and amounts of O2 adsorbed over a 7-day period for dried coals, independent of particle size. In addition, a good correlation was obtained between the minimum SHT's and pressure changes in the flasks at the end of the test for the same coals, also independent of particle size. Based on these results, the sealed flask test can be reliably used to determine the self-heating tendency of a bituminous coal sample.

This final report on Bureau of Mines Contract J0338028 presents the results of a research effort to predict incipient failure in electric-power-system components. The development of continuous monitoring techniques to detect an incipient failure would represent a significant improvement in system maintainability, availability and safety, This report describes the analytical and experimental aspects of the project. Mathematical models have been developed to study the behavior of cables and motors which are undergoing a deterioration process. These models allow a detailed study of the effect of deterioration on the component's terminal characteristics and performance. The efficacy of using negative-sequence monitoring is a reliable indication of deterioration has been established. Techniques for assessing the sensitivity of the prediction algorithm to component deterioration have been presented. An approach for modelling electrically-excited vibrations, and including these in the algorithm, has been presented.

Neste trabalho foram usinados CDPs da liga com composição de 50,9 % at de Ni e, em seguida, as amostras foram envelhecidas em temperaturas entre 350-550 ºC, tensões aplicadas de 60 MPa e tempos de 45 e 180 minutos. Além disso, foram realizados também envelhecimento sem aplicação de carga nas mesmas condições de temperatura e tempos para comparação das propriedades, porém acrescentando uma amostra solubilizada a 850ºC durante 1 hora. Posteriormente as amostras foram caracterizadas por DSC para determinação das temperaturas de transformação de fases. Observa-se neste trabalho que o DSC de algumas amostras apresentou tanto no aquecimento quanto no resfriamento dois picos de transformação que pode estar relacionado ao aparecimento da fase R. Além disso, pode ter ocorrido a formação da fase Ni3Ti4, pois ligas com teores acima de 50,6 %at. de Ni são caracterizados pela formação de precipitados ricos em Ni, que pode acarreta na diminuição da concentração de Ni na matriz e aumento da temperatura de transformação. Este trabalho é importante, pois há poucos estudos relacionados com o efeito do envelhecimento sob carga nas propriedades de efeito de memória de forma e superelasticidade da liga NiTi.

"INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is undergoing growth and change at a rapid rate. The modern flotation process was discovered only in the mid-twenties, and uranium leaching in the mid-fifties. The growth of individual unit equipment size is also a recent development and is perhaps most dramatically illustrated by the increase in size and connected horsepower in grinding mills. It is also apparent in much of the equipment used in mining operations.These technical and mechanical developments have influenced the design of plants but not to the expected degree.Many metallurgists believed until recently that grinding an ore in the absence of steel results in a loEs of selectivity in the flotation. However results reported by Thornton (1), Fahlstrom (2), Canmet (3 & 4) have shown on the contrary better selectivity and improved recovery at a lower operating cost. According to the Aitik (2) plant results, the net difference in cost plus tailing value in favour of the two-stage autogeneous grinding circuit is in the order of 40 cents per ton of ore milled. Even a greater difference was indicated by the results obtained by Canmet on a sample supplied by Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd.Yet how many plants are taking advantage of these findings and how many plants are being converted. How much more improvement of the results would have been obtained if these tests had incorporated optimization of classification efficiency? By nature the mining industry and the mineral processors are conservative, and tend to emphasize the possible penalties for an unsuccessful innovation out of proportion to the potential rewards even for a significant improvement."

Billions of tons of bulk solid materials are processed through our industrial plants each year, and the tonnage is steadily rising. It has been estimated that for every dollar spent in industry as a whole, approxinlately 30 cents is consumed in the handling of bulk solid materials. It is in this category that tremendous savings are possible through the use of improved techniques. Since World War 11, the mining, steel, chemical, and grain industries, among others have made use of increased materials-handling automation in order to gain some of these savings. However, in a chain of automatic operations, every link must be completely reliable, for if there is a single failure, the whole system immediately becomes ineffective. Only too often the weak link in the chain proves to be the flow of bulk solids from bins. To contribute to the fundamental knowledge in this area, a research study has been continuing at The Ohio State University. The principal objective of the investigation has been to study the internal stresses existing in confined bulk solids. LITERATURE SURVEY Literature studies have revealed that many outstanding people have made contributions to the field of bulk solids. For instance, C. F. Jenkin,1 suggested: a. The pressure on a bin wall is not directly proportional to the depth beneath the surface of material in the bin. b. The vertical pressure distribution on the base of a bin is not actually uniform but is a variable. c. Arches form in bins as a result of very small deformations of the material in the bin. This deformation causes a series of gaps to appear, and consequently causes the disappearance of diagonal forces that cannot act across these gaps. The removal of the diagonal forces causes horizontal forces to be introduced which seem to be the chief cause of arching. 11. A. Janssen,4 in 1895 in connection with his experiments on bins, derived a differential equation to describe both the lateral and vertical pressure in bins with vertical sides. This represents a significant contribution to bulk solid theory, and thus its solution is reproduced as follows: L = KV = RW/U' [l-e -U'KY/R] I where L is the lateral pressure of the bulk solid in psf., V is the vertical pressure of the bulk solid in psf., K is the ratio of the lateral pressure to the vertical pressure at any point, R is the hydraulic radius of the bin in feet, W is the density of the bulk solid in lbs. per cubic feet, U' is the coefficient of friction between the stored material and the bin wall, and Y is the head of material above the point in question in feet. In 1903, Jamieson,6 in an elaborate series of experiments on full sized bins measured vertical and lateral pressures by hydraulic diaphragms. He determined many values for mediums of corn, wheat, peas, and flaxseed. In 1951, Caughey, Tooles, and scheer3 measured both lateral and vertical pressure in deep bins by using strain guages on steel bands. A premature detonation of an explosive charge occurred on January 30, 1961, at a face being prepared for blasting in the underground Jefferson Island Salt Mine, Diamond Crystal Salt Co., Jefferson Island, Iberia Parish, La. The accidental blast injured the powderman fatally; his helper was injured also, but recovered. The accident represents the first fatality reported to the Bureau of Mines in connection with the use of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) blasting agents in underground mining in the United States. Representatives of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Laboratory, Pittsburgh, Pa., and field representatives of the Bureau's Health and Safety Activity conducted the investigation, upon request of the manufacturer of the ammonium nitrate being used and with concurrence by the mine management.

Muscovite mica crystals lower than 15 mm diameter are discarded as waste in the mining area of Borborema-Seridó (BRAZIL). The objective of this work was the ore dressing and purification of this waste to be used in the preparation of pearlescent pigment. Muscovite was dry ground using knife mills and an ultrasound treatment. It was possible to achieve 67% of mica with particle size lower than 100 µm. This product was used in the preparation of brilliant pigments based on muscovite flakes covered with rare earth oxides (CeO2, PrO2, Ce0,95Pr0,05O2). The pigments were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and scanning electronic microscopy. The color of the resulting pigments was analyzed using the CIELAB method and it showed the following colors: muscovite-CeO2 ? yellow, muscovite-PrO2? black and muscovite-Ce0,95Pr0,05O2 ? orange. Those results have shown that ?trash mica? is suitable for use in pigment preparation.

Charleston?s coastal location has helped the city become the fourth largest cargo port in the United States and earn the 2011 designation as the number one travel destination in the United States by the Conde Nast Traveler Magazine. Part of Charleston?s charm and beauty can be attributed to its historic structures and churches that line nearly every sidewalk, roadways that were laid out based on the width of horse carriages, great weather, southern hospitality and coastal living. Now imagine the challenges of installing new, or re-placing aging infrastructure, in this setting. Every shovel full of dirt, every stick of pipe and every roadway sub-surface has its own historic story to tell. For engineering minded individuals, Charleston?s infrastructure has almost as fascinating a history as its more visible surface structures. Charleston was among one of the first American cities to construct separate sanitary and storm water drainage infrastructure. This concept has roots dating back to the city?s founding and is a credit to the foresight of its founding fathers who understood the basic health differences between sanitary and storm water.

El presente texto describe las mejoras implementadas en el proceso Gold Mill de Minera Yanacocha luego de 3 años de operación desde marzo 2008 hasta la fecha. El desarrollo de diferentes diseños en los revestimientos del molino y parrillas de descarga, el incremento del porcentaje de bolas, las mejoras en la voladura, la reducción del set de chancadora primaria y las pequeñas ampliaciones en la planta incremetaron la capacidad de diseño de planta desde 5 Mtpa a 6 Mtpa. El incremento de tonelaje no afectó significativamente al producto de molienda y recuperación, pero traslada el cuello de botella a los espesadores donde ahora se los esfuerzos de incremento de capacidad.

Factors leading to the decision to use Joy Continuous Miners for pillar extraction in the Burwood Colliery are outlined. A detailed description is given of the Joy 1-CM-2 Continuous Miner, including the power supply to the machine, and the method of cutting coalfrom a face. Modifications found necessary in practice are dealt with.The Joy 10 S.C. shuttle car used in conjunction with the Miner, and alterations made to this unit, are then described, together with Ancillary units for the whole installation such as transformers, motor generator set, air compressor,_ cables for power supply and water supply for dust suppression.Special arrangements were necessary to transport the Miner and Shuttle Cars through the tunnel to the Victoria Tunnel seam, and the method of overcoming the transport difficulties is discussed. Manning of the Continuous Miner unit, and final preparation andsubsequent working of the pillars is outlined. Special attention must be given to maintenance of the machines.It is concluded that the combination of Joy Continuous Miner and Shuttle Car is an excellent method for removing pillars in the Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONThis paper deals with the Burwood Colliery in the RH.P. Group in which some units are engaged in the mechanical extraction of pillars with Joy Continuous Miners.In 1941, an amendment to the Coal Mines Regulation Act of N.S.W. forbade the extraction of pillars by mechanical means unless with the express permission of the Minister for Mines. As this permission was not forthcoming, no mechanical extraction of pillars took place in Australia until 1954 As it was doubtful during most of this period whether mechanical extraction would ever come about, coal generally was won with a view to maximum extraction in the first workings, thus giving rise to centre gannon bord panels and 45° angle cut throughs as shown in Fig. 1.

The United States depends mainly on foreign imports, principally India, for an adequate supply of sheet mica suitable for its many uses in the electrical and electronics industries. Sheet mica has, in fact, played an indispensable role in developing these industries,4/ and, in turn, the products of these industries (radio, radar, electric motors, and many others) have become indispensable to the military forces. Because or these conditions, sheet mica in its better qualities long has been classified as a strategic and critical material, and from this stems the wide-spread interest in substitute materials of which synthetic mica is one potential type. The United States Departments of the Navy and the Army entered into a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Mines in 1947 to study ways and means of synthe-sizing and growing mica crystals. This is one of a series of reports5/ that describe the results of this program.

The mechanized mining cycle using loaders and shuttle cars had it speak in terms of usage in the mining industry during 1950 through 1960. In Brazil, this system is still used at underground coal mines in southern Santa Catarina coal basin. With the aim of investigating the benefits of a new mining scheme using the room and pillar method for these local mines, a computational simulator model was developed in order to investigate the mining cycle. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the simulator and the results that the simulation shows regarding impact of the proposed new scheme on mining productivity.

En Arequipa, Moquegua y Tacna se han definido diversos arcos magmáticos. En los arcos jurásico, paleoceno y oligo-mioceno ocurren pórfidos de distintas características, los cuales presentan diferencias litogeoquímicas (LaN/YbN>20, Sr/Y>40, Eu/Eu*>1, U/Th>0.27, NbN/TaN>0.7). Estos parámetros pueden ser utilizados como guías de exploración, ya que son anomalías desde el punto de vista litogeoquímico. En caso no haya mineralización visible (depósitos ocultos), el empleo de estos trazadores en unidades ígneas (diques, cuerpos subvolcánicos e intrusivos) puede señalar la probabilidad de encontrar depósitos en profundidad.

Intrinsic remediation is the effect of natural attenuation mechanisms - dilution, dispersion, sorption/precipitation and biodegradation - reducing contaminant concentrations in ground water to specified levels at predetermined compliance points in the aquifer. Current monitoring and modeling for post closure was used to assess the current and long-term potential of intrinsic remediation of contaminated seepage originating from a large reactive (sulfidic) tailings impoundment near Questa, New Mexico. It is concluded that the natural attenuation mechanisms of precipitation within the tailings (as a result of buffering) and dilution/dispersion within the aquifer are currently active and likely sufficient to reduce contaminant concentrations to below state standards in the long-term. Other natural attenuation mechanisms such as sorption and biodegradation within the receiving aquife4s) were not assessed here, but are likely further reducing contaminant concentrations. Active interception and recovery of the seepage water is being maintained until monitoring demonstrates that intrinsic remediation has successfully achieved the level of water quality control required.

The Timbarra opencut gold mine is located about 30 km(19 miles) southeast of Tenterfield in northern NSW some 4 hours by car from Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland in Australia. It was a small operation designed to produce about 40000 ounces of gold per annum utilising contract mining and company owned crushing plant feeding heap leach pads. This is a standard setup except that the mine owner was in charge of all aspects of drill & blast design even though a contract drilling & blasting (shotfiring) service was being provided. The major problem was that the blasting operations were yielding massive amounts of oversize due to the jointed partially weathered nature of the granite. This was adversely affecting all downstream aspects of the operation as well reducing gold output as ore boulders were being dozed over the side of the mine as they were impinging on mining productivity. The oversize problem had to be solved as the mine was struggling to achieve design gold output. Significant design & trialing effort using minesite resources were utilised to reduce the oversize but this failed even when powder factors up to 1kg/bcm(1.68lb/yd) were used. Dyno Consult from Dyno Nobel were therefore called to investigate, review & trial options to reduce oversize from the top flitch.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions

During a programme to determine the suitability of the UK site for deep disposal of radioactive wastes, geostatistical methods were used to characterise rock heterogeneity on the basis of seismic and wireline acoustic-impedance data. The data were analysed to yield semi-variogram models that quantified the three-dimensional spatial heterogeneity of acoustic impedance. These models were reconciled with geological interpretations of the area and used to generate simulations of acoustic impedance, with wireline acoustic impedance as conditioning data. The three-dimensional simulated images were compared with actual seismic acoustic impedance. The variography confirmed a vertical zoning effect in the Borrowdale Volcanics, showing that it is caused by preferential clusters of high acoustic impedance values corresponding to regions of relatively low porosity. "The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units."
