"In the Hydrometallurgical processes, the presence of the so-called "crud" is a constant challenge in solvent extraction. Crud is a stable emulsion which forms along the interface between the aqueous and organic phase. The spread is influenced by the following parameters: first, wind blows the dust and impurities into the open sedimentation tanks. Second, the undissolved solids such as sand transported in the PLS causing problems in conjunction with incorrect agitator design.The crud fraction can decisively impact the efficiency of the hydrometallurgical extraction because the phase interface can constitute a large fraction and the sedimentation tanks cannot react flexibly to it. In the downstream process of the series-connected sedimentation tanks, they are thus all contaminated with crud. At the same time, the necessary mass transport is significantly impeded at the phase boundary between organic phase and aqueous phase due to the crud formation.The transfer of the organic phase into the electrolysis cell can result in a "burnout" of the cathode. The carryover of this electrolyte into the extraction can cause problems with the pH regulation. The carry-over of the organic components into the raffinate also leads to contamination of the leaching circuit. The continuous treatment of the crud with a 3-phase decanter centrifuge is extremely effective in combating this problem. This technology splits all three phases from each other and they are consequently continuously separated. All subsequent process steps exhibit a stable, uniform effectiveness. The main advantage for the customer is that fluctuations in the process are eliminated and the organic phase can be recirculated back to the extraction. The recycling of the solvent alone justifies the investment in less than 6 months as examples from South Africa and Chile show.To operate solvent recovery in daily operation fully automated online at the optimum limit, the decanter centrifuge is equipped with a concentration-dependent pond adjustment called DControl® by this means, we can guarantee our customers the maximum possible solvent recovery and minimize the solvent costs in this process step. This system is presented in detail in this paper."

In stopes of the 2000- and 2150-ft. levels in the North mine section of North Broken Hill Limited, whence a substantial proportion of the company's production is being drawn, and especially in stopes which involve the portion known as the Northern orebody, occurs it light-coloured friable porous material which represents average grade ore from which the lead and zinc minerals, and certain gangue constituents, have been largely or wholly removed by leaching. The 2000- and 2150-ft. levels lie, respectively, 1550 and 1700 ft. below extreme base of the pre-mine oxidized zone. Composition of the cellular product shows it to be supergene. An incremental analysis based stope design optimization method was developed at Exodus, an underground project located 30 miles north of Carlin, Nevada. Traditional underground stope design methods, by manually drawing stope shapes, are typically very time-consuming and lacking of consistency and accuracy. For quick reserve calculation and economic analysis, a new method named '3D Incremental Analysis based Stope Optimization' was created for mine wide stope designs at Exodus. With this unique but practical method, multiple options of mine designs were completed within a short period time, which allowed us to select the optimal cutoff grade and best stope design option for the project.

The Phoenix mine on the Mararoa Reef at Norseman, Western Australia, provides an outstanding: AUstralian instance of the recurrence of payable ore beneath the bottom of an abandoned mine, and an interesting and instructive example of the development ofideas with regard to ore recurrence in a particular district. The Mararoa Reef is the most productive of several hypothermal goldquartz vains in pre-Cambrian basic volc81olics which strike northsouth and dip on the average, 45 degrees east. The Phoenix minewas abandoned at 500 ft. vertical depth after producing 342,000 tons of 9.9 dwt. recovery grade (equivalent to nearly half of the total production of the Norseman field) from a 2,500 ft.. long, horizontally disposed oreshoot, which is reported to have had an ore outcrop only 30 ft. in length.Interest in the field was revived in 1933, and by 1941 new ore mined and developed on the Mararoa Reef by Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. amounted to approximately 700,000 tons of 6.7 dwt. recovery grade. In the same period another oreshoot of similar size and grade was developed by Norseman Gold Mines N.L., south of the old Mararoa company's site. As shown by the plans, the ore occurs in discontinuous shoots. The intervening area of shear is poor in quartz as well as in gold. Geological work on behalf of Western Mining Corporation Ltd., and Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. has been in progress in the mine and in the field more or less continuously from 1913 to 1941 and again since 1946. This paper describes the successive advances in the understanding of the exploratory problem up to late 1941, to which several investigators have contributed. The evaluation of historical goldfields has been common over the past 15 years, reflecting changing economic conditions, improvements in knowledge and technology and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins, which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold, have variable geometry and architecture and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation, since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. Mine records include documents such as plans, sections, reports, news cuttings, production tabulations, etc. A major advantage for the modern explorer is the capability of computer modelling to display this data in 3D. Historical records can give the explorer substantial information on various deposit characteristics, not least grade and geological continuity, geometry and architecture, mineralogy, metallurgical properties, bulk density and ground conditions. From an evaluation perspective, historical records can be used to support a Mineral Resource estimate, though its application will depend upon the quality and quantity of the data and judgement of the Competent Person. Effectively used, historical records can reduce geological uncertainty and focus evaluation efforts û thus reducing project risk.

Two types of Mt Tom Price hematite iron ore from Hamersley Iron P/L were tested using a Humboldt Wedag Jones P40 wet high intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS). The parameters tested were magnetic intensity (7000, 9000 and 11 000 Gauss), groove plate type (8R and 12R) and gap width (2.5 and 1.8 mm). It was found that at 9000 gauss magnetic intensity, reasonably high-grade and recovery in the concentrate were obtained. At 2.5 mm plate gap width, the 12R groove plate performed slightly better than the 8R groove plate. Further testwork is recommended to optimise the magnetic intensity, feed flowrate and pulp density, wash water pressure and flowrate with 12R and 8R groove plates at 2.5 mm gap width.

The barite industry has made notable progress since the days when barite was used only as an adulterant in white-lead paints and the only method of mining it was with pick and shovel. The following chronological record may serve to show how this heavy white mineral has grown in importance in the national exonomy and at the same time to indicate development of methods for obtaining it. 1845. - Barite first, mined in Fauquier County, Va., for use as an adulterant in white-lead paints. 1850 (approx.). - French settlers 60 miles southwest of St Louis, Mo., discovered barite; called it "'tiff;' meaning white. It was mined and shipped to St. Louis for use in paint.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed the cycle of secondary gold to determine the quantity of gold not being recovered from scrap, and to identify areas for research to increase the supply of gold from scrap. Secondary gold in 1967 was estimated to be 2.4 million troy ounces; this excludes secondary gold which is recycled within consuming plants. Firms contacted included consumers using about 41 percent of the gold in 1967, And refiners that recovered about 90 percent of the secondary gold. Results of the study indicate that loss of gold is small, and refiners and consumers are accelerating programs designed to reduce recovery costs. With the increasing generation of low-grade industrial scrap, research is needed to improve present recovery techniques and to develop methods to accelerate the flow of secondary gold back to supply.

Methane (CH4) present in coal seams, generally known as Coalbed Methane (CBM), Coal Mine Methane (CMM) or Coal Seam Gas (CSG), is a major energy source, as it is the primary constituent of natural gas. At the same time, released methane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) and a major safety hazard in underground mining operations. Therefore, a considerable effort has been undertaken to develop coal bed methane extraction and utilization technologies that can achieve both environmental and safety benefits. Countries with significant coal reserves and gassy seams, i.e., USA, Australia, Canada, China, India, Poland and Germany have developed mature methodologies and practices to extract, before and during mining, and utilize significant amounts of methane from coal seams. Nevertheless, on a global scale, methane recovery remains untested and many technical and economic challenges require urgent attention. The research presented in this paper, sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is focused on the Zonguldak Basin, the only hard coal region in Turkey. The basin is known to contain very gassy coal seams and consists of three major regions: Armutcuk, Zonguldak and Amasra. Among the three, the Amasra coalfield is considered as the most favorable for CBM recovery, as it comprises of deeper coal seams and where a private company, Hema Enerji A.S. (Hema) is already developing coalbed methane production facilities. This study aims at developing a reservoir model to predict the potential CBM recovery from the CBM-2 well, the only producing CBM well drilled by HEMA Enerji A.S in the Amasra coalfield. History matching was utilized to model the 15-day production data and uncertainty analysis was performed to estimate the optimum values for the reservoir parameters. The produced model yielded an average production rate of 143 m3/day for 10 years. The total amount of CH4 to be produced during this period was 0.53 million m3. Furthermore, the total amount of GHG to be avoided was estimated at 6585 tCO2e.

Bench-scale flotation tests were conducted on two western tactite ores to study the recovery of tungsten and zinc minerals. The investigation, which is part of the Bureau of Mines ongoing program to develop methods for beneficiating minerals and metals from domestic low-grade ores, demonstrated the feasibility of producing scheelite, sphalerite, and their bulk concentrates. Sphalerite concentrates containing 51 to 53 pet Zn and less than 0.11 pct W03 were selectively recovered prior to scheelite flotation. Zinc recovery ranged from 85 to 91 pct. Scheelite concentrates containing 17 to 25 pct W03 were then recovered from the ore; tungsten recoveries ranged from 88 to 94 pct. Bulk flotation concentrates containing 84 to 91 pct of the W03 and 87 to 95 pct of the zinc also were prepared. More than 98 pct of the W03 in a bulk concentrate containing 9 pct W03 was extracted by autoclave leaching with a soda solution. The zinc remained in the leached residue.

Available barrier pillar design methods do not adequately account for overburden caving characteristics, the timing and magnitude of associated load transfers, the occurrence of unusual geologic features, or the effects of multiple-panel/multiple-seam mining. To address this problem, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Cyprus Plateau Mining Corporation, conducted a barrier pillar study in a multiple-seam mine setting. Insufficient barrier width resulted in excessive load transfer to an adjacent/underlying section. Consequent entry and pillar deterioration resulted in the section being prematurely abandoned. This paper proposes an approach based on in situ measurements, which includes mine-specific loading conditions in the barrier design process.

"As ores degrade, mining techniques and chemistries change to meet market demand and maintain product quality. The balance of recovery and grade is a significant challenge in the Crago Process where an anionic collector is used to float phosphate, followed by acid scrubbing, then an amine float to improve product grade. As the grade is a requirement for DAP and MAP production, recovery is the criteria to suffer. Phosphate losses in the amine float can bring overall recovery down by as much as 18%, creating a growing need to think outside the box to improve recovery. This paper will focus on the theory of amine tail recycling and the best methods to optimize the overall phosphate recovery by recycling the tails from the cleaner flotation step. INTRODUCTION In 2014 the total US phosphate production was down 13% over the prior year, from 31.9 to 27.1 Mt, which accounts for 12.32% of the world’s phosphate rock production. Florida and North Carolina phosphate production accounted for 80% of total US phosphate production, which was down from 85% the previous year. This decline is due in part to the closing of the last phosphate mine in Polk County, FL - which had an operating phosphate mine for over 100 years (Gurr, 2015). Another factor contributing to the reduction in contribution from FL & NC is the increasing challenges in beneficiating the remaining ore deposits. The Central Florida mining district has historically been in the Bone Valley deposit, where raw apatite was abundant with P2O5 values as high as 15%. The Bone Valley ore also had characteristics favorable to beneficiation to 27.5-29.7 %P2O5 while achieving recoveries above 86%. The move southward into the Hawthorne Formation has seen the ore feed grade hit some historic lows, and the matrix characteristics pose more challenges to phosphate producers. The Hawthorne Formation experienced lateritic weathering after the Bone Valley formation which altered the apatite to aluminum phosphate minerals, and alteration of montmorillonite to kaolinite, releasing MgO that caused the dolomitization of the top of the Hawthorne limestone (Cathcart, 1966). Elevated levels of dolomite can yield an increase in slurry viscosities, reduce production rates, and increase energy costs in the wet-acid fertilizer process. The MgO will also act to dilute grade, making it more difficult to achieve a standard 18-46-0 product (McHardy, 1981)."

During the detoxification of chromium-containing slag by Achromobacter sp. CH-1, anionic surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate(SDS) and its mixed systems with different Tween surfactants(Tween 20, Tween 60 and Tween 80) were used to promote the interaction between the bacteria and the chromiumcontaining slag and the rate of acid-soluble Cr( ? ) leached from the slag. The effects were evaluated by the surface tension, the pH of the leaching solution and the leaching rate of total Cr( ? ) from the slag. The results showed that the surfactants systems improved Cr(VI) leaching and its detoxification of chromium-containing slag. The mixed surfactants of SDS combined with Tween surfactant revealed better effectiveness of detoxification than SDS only. When the mass ratio of SDS to Tween 80 was 1:1, the rate of Cr( ? ) leached from the slag increased by 12%.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of Best Practice Principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned.The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95 per cent passing 2 mm and the design allowed for a single cutter primary Vezin sampler, increments taken from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals, whilst filling a tanker for the pneumatic offload at our base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from our smelting complex and the input to our refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ‘interleaved’ fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks.The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum is the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs and stock levels for all our operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February every year, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). A trend was developing in the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter (sender) showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock and the base metal refinery (receiver) showed that their theoretical stock increased against their physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results, that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream.This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the respective sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were analysed again, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period.From these investigations, it was found that airflows present inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias and a change in sampling protocol was introduced as well as physical changes to the sampling equipment were made to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period which followed, after a phased upgrading process, showed that the accounting between our smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below five per cent relative to theoretical stock).CITATION:Kruger, C J and le Roux, E, 2017. One of the chief drawbacks to Bendigo mining always has been the difficulty of draining the mines in an equitable manner, so that each company or mine owner bears the properly share. The trouble seems to have been apparent on this field since the diggings were discovered. One mine would push on more expeditiously than its neighbour in looking for the precious metal and sink its shaft, whilst those in the vicinity would simply potter about, and discontinue sinking until gold was struck in the deeper ground, and: then they would go ahead, start sinking, while the pioneer would have to pump all or most of their water. This sort of thing continued here for years until the leases were worked down to the very deep ground and the water became such a b.urden on those companies that had deep shafts, that first one stopped hauiing and then others; with the result that over 1000 feet of water was allowed to accumulate on the New Chum line. lt appeared that if something were not done the whole of the main line of reef in the Bendigo district would be at a standstill, when a scheme was formulated and handed to Mr. Lansell, who, with other gentlemen, took the matter up, and at the present time all the mines on that particular portion of reef are in full work and the water all bailed out.lt is this scheme that I am requested to place before you and also to give you the details of the work done since its adoption.
