The City of Alexandria, Virginia, Public Safety Center (PSC) is a 64,000 square foot facility that houses the Police Department, Office of Sheriff and the Office of Magistrate. In addition, the center includes a detention facility for local and federal inmates, operated by the Sheriff. The PSC is composed of a 3-story building to the west and a 6-story building to the east constructed on a landfill in a wetland area in the flood plains of hunting Creek. The existing ground floor of the 3-story building is a floating slab-on-grade, with the interior and exterior columns, exterior walls and upper floors all supported on belled, drilled shafts. Portions of the floating first floor slab have undergone excessive settlement due to the apparent consolidation of the underlying organic soils. The magnitude of the settlements of the floating first floor slab is sufficient to require replacement of the slab and relocation of a portion of the facility. The rehabilitation was complex and required staged construction, consisting of constructing Auger Pressure Grouted (APG) Piles in low overhead conditions. This paper summarizes the geotechnical conditions that lead to the excessive settlement of the floor slab, the construction of the (APG) Pile foundations in low overhead conditions and the evaluation of potential future settlements.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine those factors that are significant in affecting the velocity of flames propagating along the boundary separating gaseous fuel and air. In addition the aerodynamic motion of the gases in the vicinity of such interfacial flames was delineated. Parameters in the study included flammable zone thickness, flammable zone concentration of gradient, fuel type, and position of the flame relative to various environmental surfaces. Of all these factors, the flammable zone thickness and burning velocity of the stoichiometric mixture were found to have the most significant effect on the flame speed. Notion of the gases in the vicinity of the interfacial flames was examined by particle track and interferometric techniques. The relative velocity of the interfacial flame with respect to the unburned gas on the central streamline was found to equal the burning velocity of a stoichiometric homogeneous fuel-air mixture. In addition, it was observed that the composition of the lean fuel-air mixture at the boundary of the combustion zone appears to be less than that defined as the fuel's lower flammable limit.

Precision surface mining is increasingly occupying a significant role in open pit mining. Improvements in technology now allow continuous surface mining of material well above 140 MPa (20 300 psi) efficiently and cost effectively when compared to drilling and blasting/primary crushing methods. These include the elimination of the use explosives and primary crushing, the ability to precisely extract the ore from the waste, or separate ores of varying chemistry and mine thin seams and non-homogenous orebodies cost effectively. In addition, precision surface mining extends the useful life of a mine by extending the mine boundaries. It can expand production capacity in existing mines and is particularly cost effective in greenfield start-up mines. Precision mining techniques result in higher percentage recoveries. This paper reviews several of these techniques for the Terrain Leveler« surface excavation machine (SEM), and shows their impact. Vermeer's current approach to precision surface mining is utilisation of the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. Several units have been proven in round-the-clock, seven day operations throughout the world. Among other innovations are design simplicity, stability, maneuverability, rear-mounted tilting drum and top-down cutting. The impact of these items are discussed in more detail in the paper. After a detailed analysis of the importance of machine availability on overall mine performance, Vermeer has extended its equipment line to include a direct-drive option for its T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. In addition, improvements in dust suppression are presented. While the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM is of optimum size and cost in small and medium sized mines, Vermeer has recognised that larger mines require larger machines with increased capacities. Vermeer will prototype the T1655 Terrain Leveler SEM later this year. Specifications of this machine and up-to-date preliminary results are presented. A discussion of the role of each machine size and driving mechanisms are included. Finally, the next stage in Vermeer's providing solutions to the surface mining community will be described - a continuous loader. The impact on current mine planning is presented using a detailed computer program developed for studying the impact of loading techniques and higher production rates on mine plan optimisation.

THE following brief paper is submitted with a view to encouraging the exploitation of hitherto neglected 10w~ grade ore-bodies which are suitable for extraction by open-cut methods.The Corinthian North mine, situated 10 miles from Southern Cross, in the Yilgarn district of Western Australia, furnishes an example of low working costs, although operations are carried out on quite a limited scale.The body of quartz which is now being worked strikes N.W. and S.E., has a very slight underlie to the west, and lies between bodies of quartz-hrematite s,chist on the east and amphibolite on the west.So far as the property has been explored, it would appear that the underlying sulphide rises to within about 70 ft. of the surface in the northern end of the workings, and pitches away to the south at a grade...

"By the time the latest expansion of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) system, known locally as Metro and which opened in 1976, is completed in 2020, the system will serve 97 stations and operate on 188 km (117 miles) of track on six interconnecting lines. Metro provides a critical transportation link to a population of approximately six million people within a 3,900-km2 (1,500-sq-mile) Washington Metropolitan area and has allowed job growth to expand to all corners of the region. In the 1950s and 1960s, when the system was first conceived and construction began, most jobs were centered in downtown Washington, and most of the workforce commuted by bus or car. Today, transit-oriented development has increased residential, commercial and government facilities near most of the existing 91 stations increasing the importance of the Metro system as a critical transportation link for the region. According to recent American Public Transportation Association (APTA) data, Metro is the second busiest transit system in the United States (after New York City’s transit system).During the nearly 50 years of construction on the Washington Metro system, technology improvements and lessons learned from the global tunneling industry were implemented. Portions of this background and history have been adapted from other work by the authors Roach et al. (2017) and expanded for use herein. For soil tunnels, these improvements included the change from a “two-pass” tunnel lining with a typical initial lining of steel ribs with wood lagging or segmental precast lining erected within the tunnel shield followed by a final lining of cast-in-place concrete to a one-pass lining system of pre-cast concrete gasketed segmental lining. Soil tunnels were originally excavated using open-face tunnel shields, but changed over time. By the late 1980s, tunneling using closed, pressurizedface tunnel boring machines (TBMs) using a one-pass tunnel lining consisting of segmental precast concrete permitted tunneling in a wider range of soil conditions with much less risk of damaging overlying utilities or structures, greater safety for tunnel construction personnel and without the need to dewater the soils. However, due to concerns about conditioning clays with earth pressure balance (EPB) TBMs, open face machines were still favored by contractors for their better advance rates, lower cost and ability to deal with boulders that were occasionally encountered in the Coastal Plain Terrace Deposits."

OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount lVIorgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operation, the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be ineluded, as it is necessary to understand the eonditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan.

"The use of soil improvement to utilize areas, which are not suitable for foundation purpose, has a long tradition. Due to the increasing demand of foundation works in areas of unsuitable soils, the improvement of the existing soils becomes even more important in the future.Various applications and systems for various demands exist around the world. Either it is a “simple” improvement for settlement reduction or a more important aim as liquefaction mitigation. However, each system has its advantages, limits and needs.Furthermore to the soil improvement, using various tools, soil mixing can also be used for applications like cut off and/or retaining wall.The paper will describe some basics of various techniques and different applications of the systems all over the world where the systems provided solutions for different purposes, e.g. simple foundation or liquefaction mitigation.It will describe also the main equipment which will be needed to execute these works under the various conditionsINTRODUCTIONSoil mixing is a methodology where the soil is improved by mixing it with cement, lime or other binders in situ by using a mixing tool. This methodology can be used either as wet mixing or as dry mixing. In the more frequently used wet mixing process, usually a mixture of binder and water, maybe with additives, is injected and mixed with the soil. Depending on the type of soil and binder, by the end of the mixing process, a mortar like mixture is created which hardens during the hydration process. In the dry mixing process, the binder is directly mixed with the soil and reacts directly with the existing soil and water.Mixing tools show several versions, so that they are mixing around either a vertical or horizontal axis, mixing in a trench and maybe are jet assisted. Figure 1 shows a classification done by Bruce 2010. Depending on the technique, improvement depth of up to 80 m can be achieved."

During the past few years, since flotation has become the paramount treatment method for most all kinds of ores, the Bureau has gathered the data on consumption of reagents used in the flotation treatment. The first report was issued in 1916. A brief review of such reports snows the progress made in the art of flotation, and each year brings forth the development of new reagent a or combinations of reagents that seem sure to survive, but research and progress spell their defeat, if not by entire elimination, at least subjects them to considerable modification.

Carlisle: An old friend and good friend, Alan Bateman, is the Silliman Professor of Geology Emeritus at Yale and editor of the Journal of Economic Geology. Now, Alan, let's start off by telling us something about how you became interested in copper. Bateman: Well, after I left Yale in 1913, I was appointed one of the field members of the Secondary Enrichment Investigation. We spent three years in the field studying all the copper deposits of North America, trying to find out how secondary copper enrichment took place. As part of this investigation, I went up to Kennecott, Alaska, in 1916. After the trip I was asked by the president of the company to become consulting geologist to them. I accepted his offer, and to this day I'm still consulting geologist to the Kennecott Copper Corp. Up at Kennecott, there were both Henry Krumb and my good friend Henry DeWitt Smith, who was general superintendent. He and I had been together at Yale, and I had ushered at his wedding. Interestingly enough, Henry took his bride to Alaska and I took mine there two months later. My assistant was Don McLaughlin, and I think that was his first experience in a mining camp. We published a paper on Kennecott together and cemented a friendship lasting to this day.

Ground Modification construction is rapidly evolving in the United States. An assessment of the construction status of Ground Modification methods with their dates of introduction and general acceptance in the United States is summarized. Seven of these techniques are discussed in depth with short case histories; namely, Dynamic Deep Compaction, vibro-compaction, vibro-Replacement, chemical grouting, compaction grouting, slurry grouting and jet grouting. Additional case histories are presented to illustrate the trend of combining Ground Modification techniques to solve specific site problems.

"The large Yandi channel iron deposit (CID) is located in the north-west of Western Australia and is currently mined via open pit methods. Drilling at Yandi is widely spaced and current estimates are mostly linear averages of the surrounding local samples. Linear estimates such as ordinary kriging (OK) based on block sizes that are significantly smaller than the dimensions of the drilling grid are less variable than the unknown reality (Armstrong and Champigny, 1989).Conditional simulation (CS) provides a series of plausible realisations that represent the actual grade variability at a small scale (eg 1 m + 1 m + 1 m). These simulations are very useful for a number of purposes, eg: optimising grade control, stockpiling and blending selection of optimal drill hole spacing assessing resource risk on contained tonnage and metal.At Yandi the major constituents of the ore (Fe, P2O5, SiO2, Al2O3 and LOI) are correlated to varying degrees. Independent CS of each assay variable will not reproduce these correlations. Reproducing the correlations (and the shape of scatterplots) is important if the simulations are used for the abovementioned purposes. This paper examines and compares various methods of CS that aim to reproduce the correlations between the assay variables.The CS methods evaluated in this paper are conditional co-simulation (CCS) using the linear model of co-regionalisation and two other, alternative multivariate simulation methods, which use min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) or the stepwise conditional transform (SCT) to de-correlate assay variables before performing independent CS. It was found that CCS best reproduced the characteristics (histograms, variogram, scatterplots, etc) of the declustered drill hole data (Figure 1). Whilst simulation using MAF generally produced acceptable results, the method did not adequately reproduce the variance of the assay variables. The univariate statistics, histograms and experimental variograms were acceptable for simulations generated from the SCT. Bivariate statistics, cross-variograms and scatterplot reproduction for the SCT were unacceptable. The latter method produced inferior results because there were insufficient samples to obtain a reliable transform of the third assay variable in the transformation sequence.None of the abovementioned simulation methods provides good reproduction of all the scatterplots. This is due to the presence of clay pods, which cause some scatterplots to display two trends. These clay pods contain higher percentages of SiO2 and Al2O3 than the surrounding CID. The clay pods are generally smaller than the drill-grid dimensions. Thus their locations are typically unknown and they cannot be defined by manual interpretation, eg via wireframes. The locations of the clay pods were simulated via indicator CS. CCS was then performed separately for the clay pods and the CID. This significantly improved the reproduction of the correlation coefficients, the scatterplots and visually the simulation was more geologically realistic. Simulating the location of clay pods followed by CCS of assay variables is the recommended approach for simulation at the Yandi CID.CITATION:De-Vitry, C, 2013. "Shovel buckets, scraper blades, dipper teeth, mine car wheels and hammermills are examples of equipment which require routine maintenance due to abrasion. Service life can be extended by the use 0/hard/acing and buildup materials. Mining and milling applications are described and field welding procedures discussed.A high-stress abrasion test used to select hard/acing and buildup materials/or hammers in a hammermill is described in detail. Field tests of the selected alloys confirmed their performance, and maintenance records showed a significant saving in down time and cost.The relationship between the abrasion resistance of the alloys and their hardness, work hardening, composition and microstructure is summarized. IntroductionLarge volumes of ore are handled daily by the mining industry. The abrasive nature of most ores results in extensive wear to both handling and processing equipment. If such wear is neglected it may cause lost production time and also, in extreme cases, require the complete replacement of expensive equipment. The well-planned maintenance of components subject to abrasive wear by means of buildup materials and hard facing can result in substantial economic benefits. Such benefits can , however, only be realized through the correct choice of welding process, consumables and deposition methods available to maintenance personnel. Hardfacing MethodsHardfacing is applied by a variety of methods; the three most widely used being arc welding, oxyfuel gas and thermal spraying. Table 1 summarizes the major processes used within each method. Filler metals in the form of rod, wire or powder are necessary to fulfill the individual requirements of each process. The filler rods are available in the cast form or, in the case of ductile metals or alloys, as wrought rod or tube. All types are supplied bare or flux covered. Wire is supplied in two forms, drawn flux cored and drawn solid. Powder filler metals are available in many metals or alloys; they may be simple mechanical mixtures or prefused and atomized alloys made to a specific size range and shape for optimum results for each applicable process."

The Q-coda method for estimating the quality factor Q(f)= Qo(f)n was used to characterize seismic wave attenuation in a region of the Kaapvaal Craton that includes the mining areas of the Bushveld Complex and Witwatersrand Basin. Seismic waveform data, collected by locally distant stations of the South African National Seismograph Network (SANSN), consisted of mining-related events with magnitudes ranging from ML 1.8 to ML 4. Q was calculated for nine different source-receiver pairs spanning the study region. A weighted average Q based on the number of available data gave an estimated attenuation relation for the study region of Q(f) = 327 f 0.81.

"Through funds made available in 1972 by the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy (DME) and the federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion, a program was initiated to recover saleable coal from mine waste dumps adjacent to the existing Acadia wash plant in Stellarton, Nova Scotia.Following evaluation of these dumps in 1972, the Acadia wash plant was modified to treat high-ash material. The first production was recorded in late 1974. By the end of 1979, a total of 738,202 t of dump material had been processed, yielding a total of 205,212 t of thermal-quality coal.The successful Stellarton operation led to considering the possibility of recovering thermal coal from other dumps. Evaluation of the Westville dumps indicated total recoverable reserves of 1,346,617 t averaging 53.8OJo ash.Parameters for plant design were defined from the washability characteristics of the dump material and the results of a bulk test. Two options were proposed; one was to use the existing plant with some modifications, the other was to build a modular mobile plant that could be used at future dump sites in the province after Westville. At the 25% ash level, the potential recovery of coal from the dump was estimated at 41% yield (by weight) or 549,679 t."

The regular activities of the Institute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the principal sums of these endowments amount to more than $530,000. An active effort is being made to increase the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which H. T. Hamilton is chairman, and of which the other members are: W. H. Aldridge, George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, D. C. Jackling, Henry Krumb and J. V. W. Reynders. This committee feels that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of ever-growing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light by the committee.

This manual provides basic practical instruction on the inspection of driven piles. It covers the essential components of pile driving, such as the pile driving hammer, hammer accessories, the pile and soil, and frequently encountered test methods in an uncomplicated, yet knowledgeable, and practical manner. Insight is given into the methods of installing the foundation, dealing with the cranes which do the lifting, the hammers which do the driving, the leads that guide the hammer and pile, the compressors which provide the external power when required, and finally prevalent analysis tools and testing instrumentation and procedures which enable you, the Inspector, to do your job. This DFI Inspector's Manual for Pile Foundations will help the Pile Inspector who has limited knowledge of pile foundations. Perhaps this Inspector has been pressed into service at a moments notice; a few helpful hints and suggestions to him are desperately needed and he can look here for the basics. It is also useful for the experienced Pile Inspector as a reference guide. However, this manual is not a detailed check list of every possible scenario and detail which could ever be encountered. There are other sources available which give more detailed descriptions (and should be consulted by the Inspector when appropriate; a list of this additional reference material is provided and suggestions made in appropriate chapters of this text). The current manual is more a brief "textbook overview" with some of the more important aspects given at least some emphasis so that the Inspector has some direction and hopefully helps to produce a safe, yet economical, foundation.

Coal samples taken from the No. 2 Seam and No. 4 Seam in a South African colliery were tested in a rotary triboelectrostatic separator. The two-stage triboelectrostatic separation results using the -177 µm size fraction reduced No. 2 Seam coal containing about 30.4 per cent ash to a clean product of 8.9 per cent and 13.1 per cent ash with combustible recoveries of 9.6 per cent and 30.7 per cent respectively. The same separation approach on No. 4 seam feed coal, which contained 36 per cent ash, produced a clean coal product with 10.8 per cent ash at a combustible recovery of 6.0 per cent. Petrographic tests show a significant improvement in the vitrinite content and a reduction in visible minerals encountered when using the triboelectrostatic separator, with about 53 per cent vitrinite reporting to the clean fraction for No. 2 Seam compared to the feed content of 21 per cent, and a 54 per cent vitrinite in the clean No. 4 Seam from a feed content of 21 per cent. Significant sulphur reductions were also observed after separation in both coal samples, with a better separation in the second-stage coal products.

The San Vicente to 2nd Aqueduct Pipeline?Tunnel project is a raw water conveyance tunnel linking the San Vicente Reservoir (SVR) to the 2nd Aqueduct Pipeline via Rancho Penasquitos Pressure Control Facility (RPPCF). This 58,230 lf long tunnel will be 8.5? final ID, and has four points of construction access. The job is classified into 6 Reaches of tunnel, identified by the dominant geology within the reach. This paper will focus on Reach 3, specifically the measures necessary to drill and blast a 550 lineal foot section of granitic rock tunnel immediately in front of an open face digger shield.

Uranium exploration over a wide area of the Southern Frame Embayment, South Australia, has defined a number of Lower Tertiary fluvial palaeochannels incised in older rocks. The buried channels contain similar stratigraphicsequences of interbedded sand, silt, and clay, probably derived from the adjacent uranium-rich Olarv Provinee. Uranium mineralization is pervasive within two major palaeochannels, and four small uranium deposits have been found in the basal sands of these channel sequences, at the margins of extensive tongues of limonitic sand.One of the channels is examined in detail with respect to channel morphology, stratigraphy, and rock alteration and the geology and ore controls of the contained uranium deposits are described.A geochemical zonation reflected by variation in limonite, pyrite, carbon, and humic malleI' is defined across one of the deposits. A genetic model is proposed suggesting formation by a uraniferous geochemical cell which migrated down the stream gradient and concentrated uranium on its lateral margins adjacent to the channel bank.
