Over the last twenty years, roof support technology has made numerous advances since the original wedge and slotted bolts of the 1950's. By comparison, the roof supports used today are more complex and specialized than the supports used in the past, providing mines with a varied selection of supports from which to choose. As a result, when problems with supports are encountered, it is more difficult to determine whether it is the result of geological changes, poor installation practices, or malfunctioning supports. Recognizing this problem, MSHA's Roof Control Division of the Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center, has undertaken the task of publishing a guide for trouble¬shooting problems encountered with roof support systems. The purpose of this guide is to provide a logical sequence to resolving the most common problems encountered with roof supports. The objective of this paper is to introduce this guide to the mining industry as well as provide insight into the evolution of the guide from its beginnings as rudimentary charts to its more comprehensive present format as a practical guide for use by the mining commu¬nity.

The depletion of iron ore deposits at the face of the mine site dictates the necessity for the exploitation of formerly less attractive orebodies to meet the demand of the modern world. These orebodies will typically be found close to or even beneath the water table where an increasing clay and moisture content will result. Problematic iron ores, colloquially termed as ‘wet and sticky’ material (WSM), can have a significant impact in the material handling stream due to the expensive downtime of processing equipment, which is attributed to the inter-particle and boundary cohesion and adhesion forces of the bulk material.In order to gain a better understanding of the causes of poor handleability, experimental test methods to determine wall adhesion, and inter-particle adhesion within bulk materials were developed. Based on the combination of wall adhesion and inter-particle adhesion measurements, with traditional methods of assessing bulk material handleability, a new method to assess the potential of bulk materials to cause handling problems is proposed. This method reduces the multitude of factors leading to problematic behaviour to a handleability index (HI) [0,1], which is easily assessed and understood. The method is suitable for adhesive materials and applicable for a wide range of material flow, from gravity reclaim stockpiles to transfer chutes and carry back on conveyor belts.Additionally, this research presents an assessment of the HI derived by experimental testing of three iron ore samples. A clear understanding of the problematic behaviour of the iron ore samples is achieved with the use of dust extinction moisture (DEM) tests, which indicates the regions where problematic behaviour may be experienced on-site.CITATION:Carr, M, Plinke, J, Williams, K, Roberts, A and Chen, W, 2017. This paper presents ground control best practices in weak rock environments including the "Unsupported" Weak Rock Updated Span Design Curve and awareness pertaining to the potentially detrimental effects of using resin grouted rebar in weak rock masses and the false sense of security that the use of resin grouted rebar may instill. Ground support is almost always used in weak rock environments, though the type of support used can vary widely. The development of the Weak Rock Updated Span Design Curve by the addition of 463 case histories of RMR76 values ranging from 25 to 60, has also been calibrated to four different support categories; Category A: Pattern Friction Sets, Category B: Pattern Friction Sets with Spot Bolting of Rebar, Category C: Pattern Friction Sets with Pattern Rebar Bolts and Category D: Cablebolting, Shotcrete, Spiling, Timber Sets or Underhand Cut and Fill. Design of underground man-entry type excavations in North America relies heavily upon empirical analysis. This design requires a higher Factor of Safety than other non-man entry type excavations. A comparison of the calculated ½ span failure Factor of Safety between all the categories is also presented.

The u.s. Bureau of Mines investigated electrode designs for electrowinning lead metal from a LiCl-KCl-PbCI2 electrolyte at 4500 C. The major objective of this investigation was to decrease the energy requirement for lead electrowinning. Electrolysis was performed in a bench-scale cell using several graphite electrode assemblies. Such parameters as electrode spacing, current density, and chlorine gas removal from the anode were investigated in the bench-scale tests. An optimum electrode assembly, termed the sawtooth design, was scaled up and operated at 3,000 and 4,000 A. The sawtooth electrodes operating at 3,000 A produced lead for 0.66 kW·h/kg. The electrodes were constructed by cutting large triangular grooves in the electrode surfaces. The electrodes were placed together such that the triangular peaks of one electrode projected into the triangular valleys of the other electrode. Chlorine did not build up on the anode with the sawtooth electrodes.

"Continuous control of the final grinding product size is important to optimize gold liberation for Gold Milling operations. At Meadowbank Mine an on-line Particle Size Monitor has been employed successfully to achieve the targeted final grind which leads to optimizing the gold recovery at maximum grinding circuit throughput. The live monitoring of the final product particle size leads to a maximum grinding circuit throughput every minute during the process. This paper discusses the optimal utilization of the Particle Size Monitor to assist the Mill operator to maximize the grinding circuit throughput as the milling conditions change due to variable ore processed at Meadowbank Mine. Also the paper includes the usage of the Particle Size Monitor to guarantee the final grind target at each instant of the process.IntroductionAgnico-Eagle is a Canadian-based company that Trades on the TSX & NYSE (AEM). It owns eight mines (8) operating in Nunavut, Quebec, Finland and Mexico and has more than 7,500 employees (Figure 1). 1.6 M ounces of gold were produced in 2015 and the annual average annual production from 2016 to 2018 is forecast to be approximately 1.53 million ounces of gold.The Meadowbank Mine is located in Nunavut, Canada (Figure 2). The mine opened in 2010 and from 2010 to 2014 a total of 1.8M oz of gold was produced. The milling rate is 4.2 Mt per year with an average mill throughput of 11,900 tpd or 496 tph. Average annual gold production over life of mine is expected to be 450,000 ounces. Meadowbank has 775 employees, of which 265 are Inuit or 36% of the total workforce. Estimated life of mine is 2010 to 2018. Gold production in 2015 was 381,804 oz. Meadowbank was Agnico-Eagle’s largest Gold producer in 2015."

Recent studies indicate that the United States halt substantial reserves of ilmenite, one of the major titanium minerals. However, the studies showed that sources of rutile, another important source of titanium are limited. This paper summarizes and evaluates results and conclusions reached by the various investigations initiated by the Bureau of Mines and others pertaining to the titanium mineral resources of the Nation. Domestic occurrences of ilmenite that are economically exploitable by present-day beneficiation methods are found in Florida, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, and Virginia. These deposits are estimated to contain 50.3 million tons of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Occurrences of ilmenite that cannot be processed economically under present technological conditions are found in California, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wyoming. These reserves amount to 51.1 million tons of TiO2. Reserves of rutile found in the United States are estimated to be 1.8 to 2.1 million tons of TiO2. Other than occurrences in Florida and South Carolina, rutile is found either in small scattered bodies or in deposits where the mineral cannot be recovered economically by present beneficiation methods.

Of the three chemical elements most vitally essential for plant growth the United States, before World War I, had developed ample domestic supplies of but one-phosphorus. During and shortly after the war period, the fixation of nitrogen was greatly expanded in this country, as in many others, insuring a supply adequate for agriculture as well as for munitions. However, in spite of a search for sources of the third element, potassium, which began years before the war, attained almost frantic intensity between 1914 and 1919, and continued for 10 years thereafter, it was not until 1921 that the American Trona Corporation put its Searles Lake operations into continuous production. This company in 1926 became The American Potash & Chemical Co. but has never supplied much more than 15 percent of the potash consumed in the American market. Likewise, though discovered in 1921 in drill cuttings from oil wells, it was not until 1926 that domestic deposits of potassium salts adequate to render the United States independent of foreign sources of supply were proved to occur in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico.

A total of 117 slope stabilization drilled piers were installed as part of a major hillside revitalization project. The 110-million dollar development, known as Stratford at Kenwood, included an 18-story upscale senior residential tower, a 3-story healthcare building, and 4-story condominium buildings, offering approximately 580,000 square feet of living space with panoramic views of Downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. In an effort to establish a flatter hillside plateau for the new 4-story condominium and to create a cut and fill balanced jobsite environment, an 800-foot long row of drilled piers and a 600-foot long multi-tiered shear key system was used to terrace existing 1.5H to 3H: 1V steep slopes and support the new fill. These slope stabilization features reduced the amount of spoils needed to be wasted off-site and mitigated the risk of slope instability. An ODOT/FHWA research indicated that spacing of stabilization piers and necessity of top-connecting elements are highly dependent on pier diameter, spacing, soil type, depth to potential failure surface, surcharge loads, and pier deflection. Due to pre-existing deep buried swales, various load combinations, and the complex mechanism of soil arching effects between adjacent piers, both analytical and numerical computer modeling was performed to estimate the loading on each pier. New generation multiplexed, 3-Dimensional, Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System based inclinometers were installed between selected piers to confirm the pier design, and monitor the fill placement, as well as long-term slope stability.

The 56-minute video takes the viewer up the mountain for a behind-the-scenes look at the drilling and blasting crew at work on the mountain. The video was written, edited and produced by Robb D e Wall and is available exclusively from the Crazy Horse Memorial in both DVD and VHS formats. IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some inillioils of tons of rich, copper-gold ore, averaging about 45% to 50% silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux.were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap, limestone, were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting operations started, with one' furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore fro:m. the mine, containing very little silica. When the second, furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from, small aeposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Eabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required viz, 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. One of the most energy-intensive processes for producing submicron range calcite is stirred media mill. In the present work, numerous operating parameters such as solid mass fraction, grinding media size, media filling ratio, and grinding time have been investigated using a vertical type stirred media mill. The results are evaluated on the basis of mean particle size, specific surface area, and specific energy consumption. After conducting this study, optimum experimental conditions found to be as 70% media filling ratio, 25% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. Besides, energy savings up to 22% were achieved with the choice of proper media size.

Since the first longwall panel development started in the new mining, (Southern) area, a number of roof falls have occurred in L1 and L2 gate-entries. The longwall was delayed for a total of two months due to roof falls in the gate-entries. To prevent roof falls in future gate-entries, an extensive ground control analysis has been conducted which incorporated regional horizontal stress and panel orientation, tectonic stress, roof strata, surface stream valleys, etc. Results of the analysis indicate that a combination of these factors caused the roof falls. Therefore, a Roof Instability Rating (RIR) system was constructed to predict the roof condition and identify areas where supplemental support should be implemented. The L3 gate-entries, supported by the prediction using the RIR system, have not experienced any roof problems.

The Committee's proposed standards establish definitions and guidelines for the reporting of Exploration Information, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves in Canada and are identified as the "CIM Standards" and referred to as such hereafter in this document. To provide additional clarification to Qualified Persons (QPs), guidelines have been included with the respective definitions. The CIM Standards are applicable to all minerals including industrial minerals, diamonds and other gemstones. Reserve definitions for bitumen, natural gas and oil are not included in these Standards. The CIM Standards are not intended to cover mineral inventory estimates that will be reported to government agencies.

Haul roads are often permanent unsealed access roads used by heavy haul trucks to transfer minerals. These roads can deteriorate rapidly which results in potholes, deformations and dust. Downer EDI Works has successfully provided efficient solutions to the mining industry to maintain their haul roads. HaulPac as a solution package is a process in which a bituminous emulsion is used to create a stable and durable pavement. The emulsion penetrates the road and binds the particles together, creating a stable base. It also seals the surface and prevents water from penetrating the underneath layers. Bituminous emulsion can increase the strength of the pavement material and decrease the road surface degradation which results in dust suppression. However, the everincreasing price of commodities, the necessity of reducing carbon emissions and the increasing use of autonomous haul trucks have made it vital to invest in novel maintenance solutions that can meet the needs of the mining industry in a cost-effective manner. This paper outlines the benefits of bituminous emulsion in terms of productivity, safety and environment followed by Downer’s approach to evaluate the suitability and to optimise the amount of product. The potential for changing the colour of the treated surface is explored and an initiative that incorporates end-of-life tyres of haul trucks into the pavement is introduced. And finally, an innovative method using artificial intelligence to estimate dust emission is presented.

Historically in Australia and the United States many coal mines deposited raw wash plant fines into large slurry impoundments. At the time the technology and market economics did not exist to make it viable to recover coal from these tailings. Today better technology exist to dredge and clean the tailings and there are circumstances where government regulations and market forces have come together to make coal recovery from these old tailings impoundments economically viable. This paper discusses the processes and equipment being used in tailings impoundment reclamation operations in Australia and the United States, and discusses the economic forces driving these operations.

Rice, field engineer, represented the manufacturer of the stoker.PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONThe general aim of the investigation is to develop more economical methods of using fuel in kilns and to improve the over—all efficiency of the process of firing by methods that will produce ware of better quality. One phase of this investigation is the burning of coal on an automatic stoker to gain the advantages of control, constant rate of application of heat, and ability to burn cheaper coal than can be used in the hand—fired furnaces of kilns. It a stoker in to be used it is desirable that the coot of the installation should be low, the control of operation simple, and the distribution of heat in the kiln as good or better than with hand firing. These desiderata were sought in the stoker and furnaces that were used for the tests described herein. The tests were made to determine whether it is feasible to fire a large kiln with a single stoker, whether the use of a single furnace simplifies control, and whether the admission of all the hot gam at the center of the kiln will give symmetrical distribution of heat."

Due to the constant need to improve SAG mill performance and efficiency, extensive research into all aspects of SAG mill optimization has been performed. This paper will review the current evolution of SAG mill shell liner design and their performance at the Copperton Concentrator. The effect of these liner design changes will be discussed with respect to: • Liner configurations • Mill operating performance, i.e., throughput, power draw, mill control • Mill mechanical performance, i.e., liner wear profiles, liner life, liner breakage, liner hardness • Foundry manufacturing considerations • Economic evaluation of throughput versus liner life This paper will discuss the results of Kennecott Utah Copper’s (KUC) and ME International’s (MEI) test work, providing an insight into the past, present and potential future opportunities of SAG mill liner design.

The Bureau of Mines motor gasoline surveys have been conducted in January and July, during 1920 and 1921. The Bureau has obtained and analyzed samples of gasoline representative of that marketed in the larger cities. These surveys have indicated that the gasoline on the market during the winter months is more volatile than that sold during the summer months. Naturally, the motorist desires a more volatile gasoline in the cold winter months, as it affords greater ease in starting. The fourth semi-annual motor gasoline survey, conducted during the month of July, shows an interesting relation between the market price and the quality of motor gasoline. This is particularly evident if figures obtained today are compared with those of a year ago. At the time the Bureau of Mines conducted its summer survey of motor gasoline last year, the average tank wagon price of gasoline was 28.2 cents per gallon. This year it was 21.2 cents, a drop of practically 25%.

Application of the carbonate leaching process to carno-tite ores has often been limited by the difficulty of obtaining simultaneous high recoveries of uranium and vanadium. The chemical aspects of this problem are discussed and the effect of prior roasting procedures on this discovery is described. IN treating carnotite ores by carbonate leaching it is often necessary to subject the ore to a prior roast. Among the advantages that may result from roasting are: 1) improvement in settling and filtering characteristics of the ore; 2) destruction of carbonaceous impurities that would otherwise contaminate the leach solution and consume carbonate reagent; and 3) substantial increase in extraction of vanadium, which is usually low when the un-roasted ore is leached. Recovery of vanadium may be an important factor in processing carnotite ores, and the fact that vanadium is usually recovered in good yield by acid leaching has often been an economic advantage over results obtained with carbonate leaching. It has been found that response of an ore to carbonate leaching, following roasting, depends primarily on its composition and on the conditions of the prior roast treatment, particularly with regard to the roasting temperature, the atmosphere maintained above the charge during roasting and cooling, and the presence of certain reagents. These factors, especially the last, virtually determine the extractions of uranium and vanadium attainable by carbonate leaching, as well as the reagent consumption on leaching, whereas adjustment of the leaching conditions has only a limited influence. These variables were examined systematically to elucidate roasting and carbonate leaching of carnotite ores and to establish a treatment yielding high recoveries of both uranium and vanadium. Tests were conducted on samples of four different Colorado Plateau ores, described in Table I. Roasting Procedure: The roasting tests were conducted in an electrically heated furnace in which the temperature was controlled to ±15°C. The ore (usually a 500-g charge) was ground to —100 mesh, mixed with the desired reagent, and spread in a silica tray to a bed depth of about 1/2 in. During the roast the charge was rabbled at intervals of 15 min. To provide free access of air the furnace was usually ventilated; however, in a few experiments a controlled atmosphere such as carbon dioxide or hydrogen was maintained above the charge. Leaching Procedure: The pulp, generally comprising 500 g of ore and a 2000-cc solution containing 80 g per liter of Na2CO8 and 20 g per liter of NaHCO3, was agitated in an autoclave at 120°C, under 30 psi 02. "Measurements obtained during load testing of two steel H-piles driven at a site in Northeastern Mississippi are discussed. The general site conditions, equipment used, testing procedures and results of the pile load tests are presented. Both piles were tested in compression and one of the piles was subsequently tested in tension. The piles were instrumented with strain gauges and extensometers to measure the mobilized soil resistance and pile movement. Three different “zero strain” conditions were used to determine the mobilized soil resistance and residual loads due to driving or a load cycle. It was concluded that the effect of residual loads on driven piles could be significant. Driving residual loads influenced the magnitude and distribution of the load transfer curves more than those due to a load cycle. Results of the tension test were impacted by the residual loads from the previous compression test performed on the same pile.INTRODUCTIONSeveral factors affect the performance of a deep foundation system including the subsoil conditions, loading settings, pile type and installation method. Residual stresses develop in piles particularly due to pile driving, but they are typically not accounted for in the analysis (Fellenius 2002). Siegel and McGillivray (2009) presented an assessment of residual loads measured during load testing of instrumented auger-cast-in-place (ACIP) piles. The magnitude and distribution of residual stresses along the pile shaft and toe depend on the pile installation method, previous load cycles and time effects. Poulos (1987) reported that residual load due to driving at the pile toe is independent of pile driving equipment and may significantly affect the results of a pile load test. Hunter and Davisson (1969) reported results of pile load tests performed in compression on fully instrumented piles driven in cohesionless soils along with a discussion of the effects of residual loads. Tension loads of about 445 kN (100 kips) were measured at the pile toe after driving. Unloading residual compression load at the toe was detected as “apparent” tension since the instrumentation was zeroed prior to the test. The researchers suggested a graphical approach to obtain the “corrected” load distribution curves considering that residual load will dissipate following the tension test. Holloway et al. (1975) conducted a study on the effect of residual stresses due to pile driving and developed a computer software that accounts for residual loads. Briaud and Tucker (1984) suggested a method to account for residual loads based on the results of 33 pile load tests performed in mostly cohesionless soils."
