The price of oil and other minerals may not make the costly business of offshore exploration seem -attractive at present. There is little doubt that the future search for the strategic resources will tend towards deeper waters particularly on the continental slope margins. In addition with the realisation that active tectonic environments (eg the Makassar Straits) cannot be excluded as potential hydrocarbon sources there is an increasing demand by the explorationists for deep water survey capability. Such deep water research has until recently been restricted to a few specialised academic institutions ;however with the anticipated extra, demand from other institutions, companies, and government agencies, Marconi Underwater Systems Limited (MUSL)and the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences in the UK have come together to allow MUSL to provide the deep water mapping system GLORIA on a commercial basis -for the first time. The GLORIA package comprises a deep water(more than 400m) side scan sonar system which, by operating at a frequency around 6.4 kHz can insonify swathes on the seafloor up to 60 km wide. In addition, single channel seismic, 3.5 kHz high resolution profiles, precision echo sounding, magnetic and gravimetric data all combine to provide as complete a regional interpretation as possible. The GLORIA system combines surveying at a reconnaissance level, covering as it does up to 20,000 sq.km per day, with a very high reliability, so that even in- economically unfavourable times, it can-still be considered as an invaluable and cost effective primary exploration tool. Analysis of the GLORIA data enables the identification of areas of particular interest requiring more detailed study by the more costly multi-channel seismics at a later date.

Although many ultimate pit limit design algorithms have been developed for the past one- quarter century, only the well known Lerchs-Grossmann's (LG) algorithm is capable of producing a truly optimum ultimate pit limit today. This paper presents a graph theory oriented algorithm for optimum ultimate pit limit design. This algorithm produces a true optimal solution and maximizes the total undiscounted net profit for a given 3-D block mine model. The algorithm performs much better than the well known LG algorithm, in terms of the reduction in computation time and computer memory requirements. More importantly the new algorithm is easier to understand and implement than the LG algorithm. Specifically, this paper discusses: 1) the computer representation of arcs and the rules of arc generations which dictate the formation of trees in the graph, 2) the mechanism of joint support and re-allocation, 3) the properties, the general procedures of the algorithm, and the suggested specific steps to implement the algorithm, 4) comparison between the new algorithm with LG algorithm, and 5) some experience in implementation of the algorithm and two case study results.

"INTRODUCTION Abstract Tankhouse iron control through application of new treatment technology to mitigate conventional bleeding losses is considered. Implementation is discussed and the treatment economics explored. A representative case is assessed. Treatment benefits and application drivers for specific scenarios are noted. Background Hydrometallurgical ore processing has become a significant metal extraction/production avenue in recent decades. In copper mining; the focus for this examination, around 25% of global primary copper production and nearly 50% of US production result from various hydrothermal leaching extraction approaches coupled to Solvent Extraction/Electrowinning (SX/EW) metal production. Generally such processing is favored over pyrometallurgical processes for lower ore grades and as such is finding growing use and is expected to remain a key processing route looking forward with average world-wide ore grades falling as known ore reserves become exhausted. Target Problem And Motivation In hydrometallurgical processing the production circuit may be thought of as a chain of interlocked recirculation loops (Figure 1). Leaching dissolves the target metal from the ore along with other ore components which contaminate the Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS). Iron is a common component in copper ores and, as a result, occurs fairly ubiquitously in copper Pregnant Leach Solutions (PLS) generated by leaching. Leached components migrate through the production circuit from left to right (Figure 1) through a net combination of chemical and mechanical transport mechanisms. Selectivity at the recirculation loop interfaces tends to retard rejected component migration through the production process. As a result, overall relative contaminant migration fluxes are slower than the target metal (copper) and the contaminants tend to build up relative to copper in the more upstream portions of the processing circuit over time with iron often being a significant contaminant. Further, while copper is continuously removed from the system in appreciable amounts, little contaminant exit occurs and the absolute contaminant amounts and concentrations also increase throughout the EW circuit over time."

THE Jones Mine (or Johannes Mine, as it was originally called, from a former proprietor), situated near Springfield, in the township of Caernarvon, Berks County, Pennsylvania, has long been known as a large deposit of magnetic iron ore, associated with more or less copper pyrites, and with malachite and chrysocolla. It occurs in a belt of soft schistose rocks which rest upon the Laurentian gneiss of the Welsh Mountain, and to the northward are soon concealed by the unconformably overlying Mesozoic sandstone of the region. These metalliferous strata belong to the Primal slates of Rodgers, which, in many other localities in this region, include similar deposits of iron ores associated with more or less copper, and often accompanied by chloritic and argillaceous schists, and, more rarely, by serpentine and small lenticular masses of crystalline limestone. To this same horizon belong the iron ores of Boyertown, Fritz's Island, and Roudenbusch, near Reading, Wheatfield, Cornwall, and Dillsburg (all of which are found along the northern border of the Mesozoic belt of * By the kind permission of Dr. F. A packed column (or static tube) flotation system is an innovative technology which utilizes a controlled dispersion reagent scheme and a new machine. The unique aspect of the machine is its packed-bed design permitting an unlimited froth bed height with countercurrent water washing for effective processing of fine particles. In operation, the conditioned ore slurry is fed into the middle section of the column where separation processes begin. Air, introduced at the bottom of the packed column, contacts the hydrophobic particles and floats them off continuously as the feed is added, while the gangue sinks to the base of the column. The system functions efficiently because intimate particle-bubble contact is achieved by the packing design which has no moving parts and requires no ancillary air-bubble generator. Other attractive features of the packed column flotation include high throughput, low power requirements, and simple control. Results from laboratory and pilot plant tests of this system show remarkable improvements over current industrial practices on a wide variety of ores and coals.

Sphalerite flotation using copper sulfate has been performed in the industry for decades and the mechanism of Cu activation is well established. Despite its ubiquity, many practical questions surrounding copper sulfate persist. It is not clear how iron selectivity is achieved in zinc circuits given the propensity of iron sulfides to be activated by copper. Also, the large variation in copper sulfate dosages across different plants and ore types cannot be explained. Lastly, Zn flotation with greatly reduced copper sulfate dosages attracts significant interest and has been demonstrated in certain laboratory settings, but no information is available on why those laboratory solutions have not been adopted in plant practice. Flotation studies are presented that demonstrate that Zn flotation with very low copper sulfate dosages is possible when using certain novel collectors that are not practised in the industry. However, these reagent schemes are impractical because of a heretofore unappreciated and critical role that copper sulfate plays in Fe rejection. With both very low and standard copper sulfate dosages, copper sulfate influences both Zn flotation and Fe rejection. The results highlight the multifaceted role of copper sulfate in zinc flotation and the need to holistically consider complex systems’ behaviour to understand flotation reagent mechanisms and optimise plant performance. The novel attachment timer apparatus presented in this paper serves as a diagnostic tool that allows the detection of changes in bubble-particle attachment probability and therefore floatability caused by alterations in the chemical environment and particle properties. The apparatus consists of six identical capillaries where bubbles with defined size are produced simultaneously in a measurement chamber. The bubbles at the capillary tips are placed in contact with the submerged particle bed for specific time periods, controlled with the help of automatic actuators. The advantage of the instrument is that hundreds of bubble-particle contacts can be measured automatically within a short time period. Microscopic pictures of each measured bubble are taken while recording the movement of the bubble before, during and after contact with the solid particles. The recorded pictures can be used to determine the actual bubble size and its corresponding deviation, and to detect the attachment of particles. The attached particles are collected in a detachable chamber for subsequent characterization. Furthermore, the device is portable and can be taken to the mineral processing plants for quick evaluation of particle-bubble attachment efficiency with particles and process water sampled directly from real processes.

National income originating compared to physical production for an enterprise or an industry reflects its ability to strengthen the national economy. For a single industrial sector or for an industry this comparison can be useful to reflect changes that may occur in this ability to contribute because of changing supply-demand-income-investment equilibria. A favorable relationship can be postulated by specified economic incentive, and the accompanying technologic input required can be shown. The new index proposes the use of the Federal Reserve Board indexes of production divided by the constant dollar income originating in the petroleum industry which reflects increases or decreases in performance. When compared with other mineral industries and with, total industry, an approximation of relative strength is evident. By constructing three different hypothetical conditions for future petroleum imports, assuming a constant excess capacity requirement for domestic production, and providing an estimate for future domestic demand for petroleum, the impact on the performance index can be shown. Thus, a strong position for the petroleum and natural gas industry can be stated. If this is done, it becomes evident that because of restrictions on cost-price relationships, a drilling program that would provide enough domestic oil to meet demand may not be practicable. By difference, the amount of improvement in methods of production and processing through technologic advancements can be stated explicitly.

Investigations were undertaken to evaluate peroxygen compounds for effective­ness in alkaline cyanide leaching of gold. The addition of peroxygens improved the leach results. Calcium peroxide was the best performed reagent to be employed. Improved reagent consumption followed the trend of calcium peroxide> hydrogen peroxide> no peroxygen addition. In general, preaeration stages could be eliminated, and improved leach rates achieved with no detrimental impact on leach perfor­mance. Interox has not developed an Au Plus (Trade Mark pending) system to utilise this new leach reagent. Initial plant trials are verifying its potential to give additional benefits.

Wet kata cooling power (WKCP) as measured by a kata thermometer is a well-known heat stress index used in the mining industry. Although, over the years, several researchers proposed different heat indices and indicated limitations of the kata thermometer, WKCP is used in the South African gold mining industry due to its simplicity and rapidity of assessment. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the newly developed empirical expression for the WKCP and some of the more commonly used empirical models. For this purpose, WKCP measurements are obtained based on experiments conducted in a low-speed wind tunnel. Based on a regression technique, the analysis presented aims to assess the disagreement between the empirical model predictions and actual measurements. The correlation is also presented between WKCP and the well-established thermoregulation models using parameters from the low-speed wind tunnel experiments, including dry-bulb temperature (Td), wet-bulb temperature (Tw), barometric pressure (P), and wind speed (v). It is found that the proposed empirical model for the WKCP represents the bioclimatic interaction quite well under the specific parameters that defines the harsh thermal environment and air condition, such as metabolic activity, clothing of the person, and the velocity of the ventilating air in which the person is working. The statistical analyses performed show that the empirical model proposed for the WKCP produces satisfactory estimates of the thermal stress experienced under lower air velocities, light clothing, and higher metabolic activity rates.

"This paper focusses on the strength or capacity of cable bolts and introduces a new perspective for cable bolt design by demonstrating that mining-induced stress changes may affect cables in a detrimental manner. The concept underlying a novel cable bolt pull-out resistanceor bond capacity model is described and its practical significance is demonstrated by application to a simple two dimensional scenario of a fall-of-ground.A number of practical implications emerging from the application of this model are discussed to provide guidance to ground control personnel jar improving cable bolt support systems in mining applications. These include cable layout optimization, use of cable pre-reinforcements, assessment of embedment length requirements, need for plated cables (or straps), use of bird-caged cables (or buttons), and grout quality issues.IntroductionDuring the last decade, cable bolting has become a standard support technique in mining for handling wide spans, reinforcing are passes, preventing or reducing dilution of ore in marginally stable stopes, and for many other rock support need s.In its infancy, many deficiencies in cable bolt supports resulted from improper installation techniques and, in particular, grout quality control problems and the use of empty breather tubes (Goris, 1990). The development of special grout pumps and fail proof placement procedures (Oliver, 1992; Bourchier and O'Flaherty, 1992) have eliminated many of these early problems. Nevertheless, there are still situations where cables seem to lose their capacity during mining, and in these cases the cables do not provide the expected and needed ground support. In some instances, cables perform extremely well, whereas in others the same support layout and quality of support installation seem to be insufficient, allowing falls-of-ground or progressive cavings to occur."

"The objective of this study was to gain a better insight into the kinetics of chalcocite leaching in an acidic ferric sulfate media. Chalcocite leaching in acidic media is known to occur in two sequential stages, with the first stage being much faster than the second. The leaching residue from the first stage is typically assumed to be a covellite type of material. This study hypothesized that the mineralogy after the first-stage leaching varies in response to different leaching conditions. We investigated the dependency of the mineralogy of the first-stage leaching residue on temperature and initial ferric concentration. The experimental results showed that chalcocite leaching behavior altered upon temperature and initial ferric concentration. A proposed combined reaction model was found to be able to describe the experimental data. The first stage was described very well by the shrinking core diffusion model while the second stage was described very well by the shrinking core chemical reaction model. This finding has important implications for mine operations to manipulate leaching conditions to create the desirable leaching kinetics.INTRODUCTION The kinetics of chalcocite leaching in sulfate media has been extensively studied (Cheng & Lawson, 1991; Fisher, 1994; Fisher, Flores, & Henderson, 1992; Niu, Ruan, Tan, Jia, & Sun, 2015). Sedimento II oceanographic cruise, on board of the B/O El Puma, shows a new high anomaly or phosphate associated with shelf sediments from the south Mexican Pacific. Recently, were found two anomalies in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, that are located to the east of this new anomaly, that is related to muddy sands and rock fragment debris. The latter shows values of 17% P205. The phosphate occurrence is probably associated with red tides locations that usually are found in sites where sediments are phosphates enriched. These findings suggest that south Mexican Pacific is of potential interest for P205, in waters with high nutrients values. The possibility of a more regional occurrence of phosphate, from California to Chile is suggested.

Great Salt Lake Minerals & Chemicals Corporation (GSL), a subsidiary of Gulf Resources & Chemical Corporation, is located on the east side of the Great Salt Lake, approximately 20 miles from Ogden, Utah. GSL processes brine from the north arm of the lake to produce potash, salt cake, salt and magnesium chloride brine. Potash fertilizer, in the form of K2SO4 is GSL's primary product. The GSL Sulfate of Potash Complex The GSL potash complex (depicted in Figure I) is divided into a solar evaporation pond system and the process plants. The solar,evaporation system consists of a 17,000-acre (68.8 Km2) ponding operation where the various salts deposit during the summer evaporation season, and a harvesting operation which recovers the deposits during the remainder of the year. The harvest is either preconcentrated in the flotation plant or processed directly in the chemical plant where sulfate of potash (SOP) is produced. The chemistry of the lake brine results in a solar deposit con¬taining primarily kainite (KCl-MgSO4.3H20), schoenite (K2SO4?MgSO4^ 6H2O), and halite (NaCI), with some carnallite (KCl.MgCl2.6H20) and epsomite (MgSO4.7H20). Other minor minerals may be deposited, depending upon the weather during the evaporation season. Each year, the solar deposit in the evaporation ponds will greatly depend upon the summer weather conditions, which have in the past proven to be quite unpredictable. Weather may alter both the quantity of the solar deposit and the composition of this deposit. "With the increasing demand for minerals, technologies to maximize mineral recovery are paramount to a mine’s economic success. Many mining process waters have the potential to form calcium-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, the solution to inhibit these deposits is the implementation of a chemical antiscalant program. This paper examines the application of a fouling analyzer to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scale in mining process streams. The fouling data can be used to compare antiscalant programs and to optimize antiscalant feedrates. Case studies validate the ability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery processes.INTRODUCTION The mining industry uses significant quantities of water. From quarrying, to crushing, to flotation, leaching, and refining, water is often the integral motive force to move slurries, separate or agglomerate fines, and extract and purify minerals. As well, water is used in a number of ancillary applications at mines, including dust suppression, gas scrubbing, and utility processes such as boiler, cooling, and waste water operations. For many processes, the quality of water being used is inconsequential. However, for certain processes, such as flotation, leaching, and desorption / stripping, water quality plays a key role in the ability of the operation to economically recover the target minerals. Dissolved solids such as calcium and magnesium salts can concentrate in process waters, exceed their solubility limits, and precipitate as scale on metal surfaces such as feed and transfer pumps, piping, and equipment. Some of the more common scales that form in mining operations include calcium carbonate (CaCO3, or calcite) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4, or gypsum), and to a lesser extent, calcium and magnesium silicate compounds. Any scale that deposits in a process stream will negatively impact mineral recovery, and increase the operational costs of the mine site. Whether it is acid washing a scaled heat exchanger in a carbon strip at a gold operation, replacing plugged emitter tubes in a leaching operation, or hydroblasting process lines in a scrubber unit, there are costs associated with labor, cleaning chemicals, repairs, and replacement parts. These costs pale in comparison to the potential costs of downtime and lost production, should the scale deposits occur in a process that is critical to the recovery of the target mineral."

With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.
