Methods employed to beneficiate ores utilize relatively few fundamental principles to effect size reduction and concentration. In crushing and grinding only impact and compressive forces with a minor amount of shear are employed. In concentration, gravity, magnetic, electrostatic and flotation constitute the major methods of concentration with minor use of sizing, hand picking and adhesion. This industry, as all others, can expect in the near future to see the development of new techniques for improved efficiency, cost reduction, and exploitation of raw materials hitherto considered unmanageable. NATURAL AND INDUCED RADIOACTIVITY At the Canadian Department of Mines in Ottawa in 1946, C. M. Lapointe developed a picker belt system whereby radioactive ores could be concentrated by electromechanical means. This invention ultimately led to development of what is now refer- red to as the Lapointe Picker and which has been used commercially at Port Radium and Port Hope for the upgrading of jig concentrates. Basically, the system consisted of conveying sized uranium ore on a belt under a radioactivity detection device which in turn electronically operated a kicker or plunger that separated the ore from the gangue constituents. Thus, a new principle for mineral concentration, radioactivity, was introduced commercially.

A Loss of Strength of Gold Sulfide Concentrate Before Grinding and Cyanidation Using Magnetic Impulse Treatment Gold recovery from sulfide concentrates is going with cyanidation usually. The fine grinding to 95 per cent -0.020 mm is required for refractory concentrates, in which gold encapsulated by sulfides. According energy consumption is 10 and more kW h/ton. At this paper we suggested to use magnetic-impulse treatment with small energy consumption 0.1-0.2 kW h/ton for loss of sulfide strength before grinding and cyanidation. The object of studies was the gold-pyrite flotation concentrate which was produced from ores at the Kumtor Mine, Kyrgyzstan. The concentrate composition, physic-mechanical properties and loss of strength mechanism were studied there. The tested concentrate assayed, per cent: 62.5 pyrite, 10 feldspar, 10 mica, 5 quarts, 5 carbonates, 4 haematite and another. Haematite has intimate intergrowth with pyrite ? partially with quarts. The magnetic susceptibility of haematite and less pyrite causes in these grains and mineral complex the effect of magneticstriction. As a result numbers of deformations are increased and minerals and gold are also exposed. Lateral and longitudinal strains in the minerals by magneticstriction were calculated in this work. By quantitative analysis of pyrite mono fractions were showed next micro impurities: alumina, arsenic, nickel and others elements. These micro impurities are generated a charged dislocation, cracks and micro cracks. The inter-granular links at a boundary of haematite-pyrite, pyrite-quarts, haematite-quarts have disintegrated. The dislocation is depended from mineral modulus elasticity. It was determined an indicator of mineral electro-mechanic sensitivity which characterises a conversion of electro-magnetic energy to mechanic energy. Pyrite has most dielectric constant and electro-mechanic sensitivity as haematite and quarts. The dislocations in pyrite are account for clacks and a loss of mineral strength. Size analysis of the flotation concentrate after magnetic-impulse treatment is shown the increasing the content of thin fractions by comparison no treated concentrate. Magnetic-impulse treatment has increased the effect of the next fine grinding too. The electronic microscopy has confirmed a loss of strength of gold sulfide concentrate. The gold recovery by cyanidation increased too after preliminary magnetic-impulse treatment of concentrate by laboratory tests. The magnetic-impulse concentrate studies at the Kumtor plant have showed that a recovery gold increase in the processing of cyanidation. The consumption of energy also reduced.

A lyometallurgical process for extracting copper from an ore containing chrysocolla by leaching it with a kerosene solution containing LM 63 in the presence of small amounts of aqueous ammonia is described. The experimental results indicate that 70 to 75 percent of the copper can be extracted from the ore using an ammonia content that is about one-fourth the stoichiomeaic quantity required to leach copper in an aqueous leaching system. The rate of copper extraction was found to be a function of particle size, ammonia concentration and temperature. The large quantity of physically adsorbed water together with ammonia in the pores of chrysocolla provides a mechanism for the transport of copper to the external surface of the particles where it is complexed by the LM molecules and transferred into the organic phase. When size reduction accompanies leaching, the extraction process was found to proceed when only "trace" quantities of ammonia are present in the system. The kinetics of the extraction process appear to be controlled by a mixed (reaction and diffusion) mechanism.

(Washington Meeting, May, 1905.) SEVERAL years ago, Mr. Robert A. Cook described and illustrated in our Transactions 1 a mechanical coke-drawer, patented in 1891 by Mr. Thomas Smith of the Thorncliff Iron Works, Sheffield, England, and first introduced in the United States in, 1896, at the coking-plant of the Latrobe Coal Co., Latrobe, Pa. This machine has not received any very extended application in this country, although it was successfully used in two places for a number of years. The present. paper describes a new and simpler machine, containing few wearing-parts capable of withstanding continued rough usage. Anything which tends to prolong the general use of bee-hive ovens will be welcome to those who are interested in cheapen¬ing the cost of producing coke in such ovens, especially if it provides satisfactory mechanical means, replacing the hard labor involved in drawing coke by hand with the old-fashioned ?duck bill.? The difficulty of finding efficient coke-drawers, especially during the summer season, and in the South, is notorious. Yet, notwithstanding the great improvements that have been made in retort coke-ovens, new bee-hive ovens are continually constructed; and a machine which will successfully compete with hand-drawing, and, at the same time, add to the efficiency of the bee-hive oven, seems to deserve notice. The machine here described was put in operation at the Frick Coal and Coke Co.'s plant, known as Continental No. 1, at Uniontown, Pa., in October, 1904, and is reported to have met successfully all the tests to which it has been subjected. A unique machine has been designed for mining narrow veins. The machine, called the NONN, walks on the walls of the stope and carries a boom-mounted hydraulic impact breaker. The concept of walking on the walls allows an existing muck handling system such as LHDs to operate beneath the NOMN. The NOMM has four sets of legs which can be manipulated independently or concurrently to cause the carrier to walk in any direction and to turn sharp corners. The mining rate using the breasting method is targeted to be 25 t/hr.

Dissolution of non-metallic inclusions in the metallurgical slag is of vital importance for cleanliness control of the steel manufacturing. With the development of high temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT-CLSM), new insights have been obtained due to its in situ observation characteristics, higher resolution and precise control. However, HT-CLSM measurement has the limitation, eg the slag composition cannot include high amount of transition metal oxides. In addition, it is time consuming for the experimental procedure and not so simple to succeed for every measurement. It is known that digitalisation has made a significant progress in recent years. Machine learning (ML), a sub-domain of artificial intelligence (AI), is the key enabling technology for the digitalisation of the material science and industry. The database for ML model is collected using almost all available HT-CLSM experimental data and subsequently the established database is trained by different ML methods. Unseen data is used as the benchmark of the ML model. Al2O3 dissolution is the main process to be predicted in the current study. A good agreement between the HT-CLSM data and the ML model prediction results show the possibility to apply ML in process metallurgy.

By its nature, seismology has been a data intensive field since the first digital computers were introduced in the 1950s. The first empirical models were developed in the same period and are still widely used today, for instance, the Gutenberg-Richter frequency-magnitude relationship (Gutenberg and Richter, 1956). Machine learning (ML) methods make it possible to redefine these empirical models using large datasets and examining considerably more parameters, where their significance to the problem being addressed is methodically and repeatably evaluated using robust statistical methods. In this paper we develop a simple logistic model for the short-term prediction of seismic events above a threshold magnitude from a mine’s event catalogue comprising more than a million events with 14 basic parameters from which a pool of over 830 derived parameters was developed, covering a series of 11 precursory time windows. The logistic model was fitted stepwise using SAS with α = 0.025 for both entry and acceptance. 25 variables from the pool met the acceptance criterion. The findings were surprising in that parameters a rock engineer or seismologist might have expected to be the most significant in the logistic model were not; instead, it was an increase in standard deviation of the immediately-prior seismic magnitudes that carried the most weight, followed by the average maximum source displacement and median apparent volume change. These findings make intuitive sense because the increasing scatter of the magnitude shows an increasing number of large events being recorded that could be indicative of instability in the system that could lead to large events. The model is rudimentary and enormous scope exists for more exploration in terms of data pre-processing, model types, and response variable definitions.

"A macro model for the steel usage pattern in Japan is proposed. The steels are classified into four types; converter steel for machinery and for construction and electric furnace (EF) steel for machinery and for construction. The steels are assumed to be discharged from the society in accordance with lifetime distributions of each usage. The amount of EF steel and the accumulation in society are calculated using a population balance model. The comparison with the calculated results and statistics ensures the validity of the model. Since the amount of EF steel for construction will increase and be oversupplied, EF steel will have to be used for machinery. The required and available amounts to supply EF steel for machinery are considered from the point of allowable· copper concentration for machinery use. Copper contaminates steel used for machinery during recycling process and contamination ratio is evaluated with the model. Copper concentration in EF steel is predicted for various scenarios.IntroductionThe amount of CO2 emission from Japanese steel industry is 48.0 million C-ton in 1990 and it occupies 15.1% of the total amount in Japan. In order to reduce the C02 emission and to save the natural resources, it is strongly required to promote the recycling of steel. However, the impurity contaminates steel in recycling process and lowers its quality. The copper concentration in EF steel is analyzed by Toi et al. using a macro model with the assumption that steel is discharged in proportion to the accumulation amount [1]. However the discharged amount of products is dependent on their age for service and usage pattern and not on the accumulation amount. In addition, the degree of copper contamination is different depending on the usage of steel. Therefore a precise model that contains the age for service within the society as a parameter and distinguishes the usage· of steel is necessary in order to clarify the problems in the recycling of steel."

To model the zinc pressure leach, equations have been written that describe the rates of individual reactions taking place, including (a) oxygen mass transfer, (b) ferrous oxidation by dissolved oxygen, and (c) ferric reactions with ZnS and other minerals. In the continuous process, at steady-state, these take place at the same rate, and so the equations can be solved simultaneously. Model calculations using simultaneous equations are shown in graphical form to demonstrate the effect of different variables on the leach performance.

The carbonaceous reduction of manganese ore is an energy-intensive process that releases large amounts of pollutant gases. In an attempt to circumvent the greenhouse gas emissions, this research investigates hydrogen as an alternative reductant. The reduction of manganese ore with hydrogen results in the structural changes in the intermediate products, which might limit the diffusion of the reactant gases through the pores. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models capture the structural changes and predict the rate controlling mechanism and this is key in designing the prereduction reactors. The current work uses CFD models to predict the degree of reduction in a shaft furnace under hydrogen reducing conditions. Manganese ore is described as a collection of scalar and tensor fields such as thermal conductivity of the porous medium, density, and viscous resistance. The results indicate that advection contributes significantly towards the overall transport of hydrogen to the reaction sites. Porosity of the final product was found to be higher than porosity of the raw material.

BECAUSE it is the basis of the economically important operation of hardening steel by quenching, the A3 transformation in iron has been the subject of numerous investigations. Although the contributions to this subject are interesting, no general review will be given here. Readers who care to follow the matter further are referred to the comprehensive summary by Cleaves and Thompson,1 which covers the literature to about 1935. Their references to 53 papers on the subject suggest that further investigation is hardly justifiable. However, considerable interest has developed recently concerning the reversibility of the transformation. From thermodynamic considerations, the transition ought to occur at the same point on heating or cooling, if the change of temperature is sufficiently slow. Yet all of the earlier investigators found a difference of several degrees. Burgess and Crowe,2 who used thermal methods, obtained average temperatures of 912° for Ac3 and 900°C. for Ar3 on electrolytic iron. Their data indicate a considerable range of temperature over which the change occurs, both on heating and on cooling. Terry3 measured the susceptibility in the critical range and estimated from the steepest parts of his curves that Ac3 came at 9180 and Ar3 at 903°C. Ishiwara4 was one of the first investigators to report a shorter interval between the temperature of the change in the two directions. He measured the change of susceptibility of kaolin-coated samples of steel, in a hydrogen atmosphere, at rates of heating and cooling so low that about 3 or 4 hr. were required for the transformation to complete itself. His results show some variability between samples, but indicate that the difference between Ac3 and Ar3 is in the vicinity of 6°C. Roberts and Davey5 measured the space lattice in pure iron in the vicinity of 900°°C. and concluded that a change occurs reversibly between 907° ± 3° and 9100 ± 3°C., probably between 907° and 910°C. Wells, Ackley, and Mehl6 made dilatometric determinations of the Ac3 and Ar3 points in samples of hydrogen-treated carbonyl iron maintained under a vacuum. They used three rates of heating and cooling: 2°, '1/2°, and 1/8°C. per min. and found the spread between the two points decreased with low rates. At the slowest rate, the Ac3 transition occurred at 909° to 909.5°C. and the Ar3 change at 907°C. in three of the samples believed to contain the lowest percentages of alien elements. They concluded that if the rate of temperature change and the content of alien elements were low enough, the A3 transformation would be completely reversible at 909.5° ± I°C. The question of reversibility is an interesting one and when some iron with especially small percentages of alien elements became available the opportunity to conduct an investigation was welcomed. IT has been known for many years that when a wire is moved in a magnetic field, an electromotive force is developed which is proportional to the rate at which the wire is moved in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic intensity and to the magnetic intensity itself. If the ends of the wire are connected to a current indicator, the current behaves exactly as though the source of electromotive force were a galvanic cell. If a wire is wound circularly and rotated uniformly around a diameter not parallel to the intensity, the current flowing through the wire will be alternating of sinusoidal shape. If, instead of a single loop, there are several turns wound in a short helix, the electromotive force developed will be approximately proportional to the number of turns, the area of the helix and to the speed of rotation. The maxi-mum electromotive force will be devel-oped when the axis of rotation is perpen- dicular to the field; if this is not so, only the component of the intensity that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation is effective. This is the principle of the usual earth inductor. If two similar coils are rotated together at two different points for which the magnetic field intensities perpendicular to the axes of rotation are different, the electromotive forces developed will each depend on its corresponding intensity and be a measure of that intensity. The concept of a magnetic hydro-cyclone is undeveloped, possibly because studies by Bragard (1965) and the Royal School of Mines in London (Robinson, 1965) were not encouraging. Its role for the concentration of ironsands is attractive in that the classifying effect within a hydrocyclone may be comparable to the classifying effect in the gravity concentration of ironsands, and thus two steps may be achieved in one. Furthermore it should be a very simple and cheap process. The idea has been explored intermittently since 1976 but more energetically since the offering of a magnetic hydro-cyclone thickener by Boxmag Rapid (1983). This paper summarises the development and test work which are detailed elsewhere (Fricker, 1984).

THE object of this investigation was to determine with a vertical magnetic variometer the extent of the titaniferous ore deposit that occurs not far from Ivry in Terrebonne County, Quebec, about 70 miles north of Montreal. The Ivry mine, on lots 37 and 38 of range V, Beres-ford township, Quebec, is one of the largest and most accessible to transportation of the deposits of ilmenite in Quebec. The ore consists of an aggregate of ilmenite anhedra serving as host for numerous fine plaques of hematite. No magnetite is known from any occurrence near this lot, and in this way the deposit differs from many others that contain a large percentage of magnetite with the ilmenite. The deposit at Ivry thus has much lower magnetic susceptibility than those containing abun-dant magnetite, and a sensitive magnetometer was necessary for the work, although a body of magnetite with ilmenite about a mile from the Ivry mine was successfully prospected with a dip needle. The principal orebody is exposed in a quarry known as the Ivry mine, from which about 16,000 tons of ore have been shipped. Small exposures of ilmenite isolated by drift serve to show the presence at the surface of some of the bodies indicated by the magnetometer,- but most of the hill is covered with glacial till and second growth hardwood. At the lower levels the till gives place to fluvioglacial sands and gravels from which the forest has been cleared. The increasing thickness of the sand and gravel as the hill descends makes the tracing outward of the deposits from the rocky knob of anorthosite a difficult matter. Within the orebodies too, some masses of anorthosite persist, which may account for some local irregularities. Fig. 1 is a photomicrograph, taken by reflected light, of a typical specimen of the ore. The dark patches are hematite and the light parts are ilmenite. No trace of magnetite was found. Fig. 2 is a photo-micrograph of a thin section of the country rock showing the texture of the anorthosite. The mean of four analyses quoted by Robinson1 is: titanium, 19.26 per cent; iron 45:41 per cent.

A zone of northwest trending dykes extends for over 600 km in the hinterland from Cairns to Mackay. In sate regions the zone is up to 120 km wide. Figure 1 shows their approximate extent, compiled from published regional maps and from specific studies in more limited areas : Palm Islands, Cardwell Ranges, Jourama Falls, Townsville area and Burdekin Delta. The context of the dyke swarm is the Tasman Orogenic Zone, the region of Eastern Australia conprised of Palaeozoic metamorphic, sedimentary, volcanic and plutonic rocks which has experienced a complex history and evolution. In the Whitsunday region, the Tam-an Zone also involves Cretaceous volcanism and plutonism. Geological relationships indicated a wide span of ages for the intrusions in the dyke, swarm zone. They intrude a range of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, and in some areas plutonic rocks. Older dykes, apparently part of the same regional swarm are intruded by sate of the granites.

For many years, Dynamic Soft Reduction has been regarded as a proper method in improving internal quality of slabs. Even though processes models improved significantly over the past years, the efficiency of Soft Reduction was always limited by the discretization error, which inherently exists if segment rollers cannot be positioned individually. The recently developed SRD segment type allows for an individual roller positioning within the mushy zone by avoiding any discretization deviation from the optimal gap. This paper provides a detailed technological overview of the SRD segments as well as operational results at their very first implementation at Ternium Brazil.

Magmatism and mineralization are features of the New England Orogen in late Palaeozoic- Mesozoic time. Voluminous silicic and mafic magmatism, both orogenic and post-orogenic in association, was accompanied by abundant mineralization in the earlier phases. Later activity passed transitionally into less vol- uminous felsic to mafic intraplate basaltic volcanism, with possible migratory hot spot activity through the flanking Oxley and Sydney Basins. Only minor mineralization took place at this stage. A new inerpretation links these magmatic and mineralizing events to a major thermal cycle. A New England hot spot(?) complex evolved in latest Carboniferous/early Permian time. Its activity was partly obscured by orogenic magmatism as Australia moved slowly over magma sources in the deep lithosphere. In Triassic time Australia's movement changed direction and faster drift over the waning hot spot complex produced multiple migratory intraplateòactivity. The volume of magma and hence abundance of ancillary mineralization was related to age of the hot spot, speed of the continental movement over thermal sources and extent of accompanying orogenic activity. The New Eng- land Orogen hot spot(?) possibly existed for 165 Ma, with mineralization changing over this Period.

What is the most practical method for storing a huge quantity of crude oil for a long period of time to assure availability if conditions curtail the source of supply? Underground storage is a logical answer. But can abandoned mines be used for this purpose? That is the proposal Fenix & Scisson International, Inc. submitted to the S.F.F. Association (acting in behalf of the Department of Industries of the Republic of South Africa), Johannesburg, South Africa, in October 1966. This engineering and contracting firm with headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma, specializes in underground storage; and based upon previous experiences their engineers were reasonably certain that a mine could be used for storing crude oil. The answer subsequently proved to be "yes." The result was con- version of a coal mine to provide storage for a quantity of crude oil which is the equivalent of a sizeable oil field. The total cost of purchasing, testing, and converting the mine was less than 15 percent of the cost of conventional steel tanks. Operating and maintenance costs are proving to be about 2 percent of those experienced at two large tank farms owned and operated by the Association.

Often it was a case of the last item to be ticked off the checklist has been to ensure that the insurance is in place. However, in more recent times insurers have imposed more restrictions on the cover they are prepared to provide, which has in some cases necessitated a change in the contracting structure to accommodate the insurance policy(ies). In addition, changing contractual practices have changed the allocation of risk between the various parties involved. This calls for a more proactive approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for both the construction and operational phases of any resource project. This paper explores how a risk managed approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for a resource project can align itself with current management approaches to project development. From the authorsÆ experience, this approach is best adopted early on in the project (often in conjunction with the bankable feasibility study) and follows AZ/NZS4360 to objectively examine and compare a wide range of risk exposures of the project in a time-effective manner across the following areas: personnel; environment; general management; compliance û legislation, systems, protocols; asset management; change management; financial impacts to the organisation; products/services; service delivery; and technology. Having identified and then analysed the risk exposures according to common consequence and likelihood ratings the next step is to develop a risk map of all considered exposures. The true value of this approach lies in the development and implementation of a risk treatment plan for identified exposures where the exposure is unacceptable. The plans will lead to the optimal solution to the appropriate risk prevention, risk mitigation and risk transfer options available. This paper also examines other benefits to the project that may arise from adopting a risk managed approach in addition to the ability to design an insurance program which recognises the exposures and the ability of the organisation (and other project parties) to retain risk.
