All persons and communities that have experienced strong-motion earthquakes are convinced of the importance and complexity of earthquake problems thatmust be solved in order to reduce the personal hazards and property losses to a reasonable minimum. It is also clear that absolute elimination of all risks is impossible. Reduction of existing hazards and precautionary measures which will minimize chances for disaster can be accomplished by realistic appraisal of the effects of recent earth- quakes on modern structures and installations. Localities that have reason to expect so-called strong- motion earthquakes can anticipate these effects by taking appropriate steps. Valid earthquake information can only be obtained from earthquakes. Each earthquake contributes to the body of knowledge by additional facts and by clarification of previous observations. Rational interpretation of the data followed by practical application of the conclusions can contribute greatly to the safety of persons and property. The general public expects the architectural and engineering profession to accept this obligation and render this service. Most earthquake hazards are man-made and arise from the imperfections of the works of man and his failure to anticipate the consequences when the natural characteristics of his environment are ignored. If it is not given to man to prevent such natural phenomena as earthquakes, it is sometimes within his power to control their destructive effects and to reduce to a minimum the toll of life and human suffering.

Loss of visibility due to the occurrence of atmospheric fogging in underground mine airways can lead to a reduction in travel times and loss of production efficiency, an increase in the frequency of vehicular and foot traffic accidents and difficulty in checking rock surfaces for instability and loose material. Where hot and humid surface air meets colder underground air, conditions for fog formation nay be present. Further, suspended particulate matter from diesel exhausts or stoping operations together with slow movement of air along passageways nay contribute to formation. The study describes an investigation being undertaken with the cooperation of Kennecott's Ozark Lead Company to identify causes of the problem.

Blasting is the main method of production in many non-coal underground mining operations and produces multiple toxic gases as a result. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires mine operators to measure the level of toxic gases in mines as frequently as necessary to ensure they are below regulatory safety limits. The current practice uses portable gas monitors to check the concentrations of toxic gases after a fixed post-blast time. This paper studies the application of a gas monitoring system in the return entry of a limestone mine to determine a safe re-entry time. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted such a monitoring program in a limestone mine from September 2016 through May 2018. NIOSH/PMRD (Pittsburgh Mining Research Division) is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions. This study showed that the use of gas monitoring in the return air can be a useful tool at the mine operator’s disposal to detect and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions and also to reliably estimate the re-entry time. INTRODUCTION Underground miners are at risk of overexposure to toxic gases from various sources. Production blasting operations using explosives in underground mines are a source of multiple toxic gases that could be harmful and even fatal to humans if prolonged exposure occurs beyond the safe limits. According to Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 57.5002 [1], metal and nonmetal mine operators must conduct gas, mist, and fume measurements as frequently as necessary to determine the adequacy of control measures to protect miners from overexposure to harmful gases. MSHA will inspect mine operators’ activities to verify the evidence of such measurements [2,3]. Continuous gas monitoring in the return air is an effective way to make sure that toxic gas concentrations at the working areas are kept below the regulatory limits before the return of miners. Toxic gases can enter the mine atmosphere from different operations, such as welding, combustion, and blasting. The main gases produced from blasting are carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Other gases are produced in small amounts and, therefore, were not considered for this study. Related regulatory and recommended exposure limits of CO, NO, and NO2 gases are summarized in Table 1 [4].

A shield on a tunneling machine has two basic purposes. Firstly to provide temporary support in unstable ground, maintaining the integrity of the bore and protecting the operators, and secondly, in conjunction with other sealing devices, to prevent the ingress of water. In any specific tunnel, unstable ground and water may or may not occur together. Further, there are a number of different ground behaviors that may be termed unstable and these must be defined in order to determine the most suitable type of machine. Beyond the shield itself, the cutterhead and the mucking system design are critical in successfully traversing difficult geology. In any but the shortest tunnels, variations in the geological conditions and the requirement of an acceptable advance rate can impose increasing degrees of sophistication in the machine design. In this paper we will review current designs of shielded type machines and their application, and discuss new developments which blend hard and soft ground tunneling technology. We will also indicate that in some conditions, although first impressions seem to favor a shielded machine, in fact an open gripper TBM may be the wisest choice.

Ironically, many of these characteristics are rewarded in business organizations, which may explain why there seems to be so many narcissists in management positions. Assuming we will be dealing with narcissists throughout our career, it makes sense for us to understand what makes them tick, and more importantly what we can do to work with them in a constructive manner.

INTRODUCTION A shuttle car is a self-propelled rubber-tired haul¬age vehicle designed specifically for underground min¬ing, primarily in coal mines (see Figs. 1 and 2). The drive mechanism is located on the sides of the vehicle, and the load is carried in the center. A chain-and-flight conveyor distributes the load when the car is being loaded by a loading machine or continuous miner and also discharges the load onto a conveyor belt or into a mine car. As the name implies, the shuttle car shuttles back and forth between the working face and the un¬loading point and is not required to turn around. Shuttle cars have served as primary haulage in this country since 1940 and still perform this function in most coal mines today. TYPES OF SHUTTLE CARS Shuttle cars may be battery-powered, diesel-powered, or cable-reel electric powered. Battery-powered cars were used between 1940 and 1950, but are almost out of existence today because of their limited power. Diesel cars have been used in coal mines, but are used mostly in noncoal mines where rules and regulations are not as stringent. Also, objections by organized labor have limited the use of diesel-powered shuttle cars in coal mines. Today, the largest number of shuttle cars are cable-reel cars. Electric power is fed through a cable stored on a cable reel that may have a capacity from 152 to 244 m (500 to 800 ft), depending upon the size of the cable and the cable reel (see Table 1). This, of course, limits the travel of a shuttle car. However, time studies have shown that for the most efficient haulage cycle, the length of haulage should not exceed 91 m (300 ft). As haulage distance increases, the waiting time for the loader or miner becomes longer, and haul¬age efficiency suffers. Cable-reel cars are manufactured in standard hand and opposite standard hand models. A standard car has the operator's control on the left front side and the opposite standard car has the opera¬tor's controls on the right front. Generally a loader or miner operates with two shuttle cars, one of each type. This allows the trailing cable to lie on either side of the entry and prevents the cables from fouling each other. Shuttle cars are designed to operate with either dc or ac power. Cars using dc power are designed for 250-v supply and ac cars are designed for either 440, 550, or 950 v, three-phase voltage. Most coal mines that are relatively level can use dc cars where dynamic brak¬ing is not required. For mines having steep grades (in excess of 15%) ac cars are used because ac traction motors have inherent dynamic braking and are safer when tramming downgrade. A recent innovation in shuttle car design in the last five years has been the introduction of an ac/dc car. This design utilizes ac input power through the cable, and the power is rectified on the car to 250-v do for traction motors. The pump motor and conveyor motor are powered by ac voltage. The main advantage of this design is efficiency-a much smaller cable may be used and the smooth operating characteristics of the dc traction motor is obtained. This prevents shock loading on the traction drive train, which is an undesirable feature of ac traction motors. SHUTTLE CAR FEATURES Elevating Discharge Today, all shuttle cars are equipped with an elevating front conveyor that allows the shuttle car to discharge into a mine car or belt feeder without the use of ramps. Hydraulic Power System Today, all shuttle cars are equipped with an hy¬draulic power system. INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. The mineral sands industry is oriented primarily toward the supply of titanium (Ti) raw materials (titanium feedstocks) for the production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment and titanium metal. Titanium minerals ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene, and titanium slag and synthetic rutile are all used principally as feedstocks for the production of white TiO2 pigment. It accounts for almost 90 percent of the world?s consumption of titanium minerals. The remainder is used for the production of titanium metal, fluxes for welding rods and as a metallurgical flux in iron and steel making. Titanium dioxide pigment is produced by two alternative process routes, the sulfate process or chloride process. The bulk of the world?s titanium dioxide is derived from the mineral ilmenite, which also contains iron oxide and other minor impurities. At some mining operations, the iron present in ilmenite is removed (ilmenite beneficiation) to produce a high TiO2 feedstock (slag or synthetic rutile) typically containing between 80 percent and 95 percent TiO2. Pigment producers then further process it to produce pigment.

Some of the mineral deposits that are being processed today, and especially those expected to be processed in the future, have relatively low compositions of the valuable mineral. With these low-grade ores, it is necessary to be able to design processes that are sufficiently low-cost to permit exploitation. One approach to minimizing the capital and operating costs for these processes is to use the capabilities of computer process simulation in the design phase of development, to make important technical and economic decisions regarding the evaluation of alternative process flow schemes, the selection of equipment and the choice of operating conditions. There are mathematical simulation models for most mineral processing operations, including several each for size reduction, size classification and mineral separations. To be able to tie these individual operating models together in an integrated mineral process simulation, however, it is important, in fact in some cases essential, that there be a model which describes how the mineral system responds to size reduction in making the liberated valuable and waste mineral particles available for concentration or rejection operations and the locked particles available for possible recirculation. This, then, is the role played by the mineral liberation model, showing the relationship between particle size, quantity and composition throughout the process.

"The increasing demand for underground works in urban centers, and in particular the need to build undercrossing tunnels, requires constant evolution in building techniques in order to achieve success and safety. In the case of Brasilia, capital of Brazil, in order to preserve an important avenue (Eixo Monumental), where are located many historical monuments, the construction of a tunnel was envisioned as an option to interconnect the National Stadium (on one side of the avenue) to the Convention Center Ulysses Guimarães (on the other side). The excavation design is comprised of a coverage smaller than one diameter, height of 7.5 m, width of 9.0 m and length of 25 m. In order to enable a negligible influence on the avenue’s usage, the structure is designed as a portico system composed of pipe canopy. In this context, this study presents the portico analytical solution computed with the aid of the software Mathematica and a numerical solution using the software ABAQUS. INTRODUCTION Undercrossing tunnels are increasingly common in urban centers as alternative roads or as access to underground works of large dimensions (stations and parking lots). The geomechanical conditions of the soil mass, not always favorable, and the low distance between tunnel’s ceiling and the surface require intense treatment of the soil massif and execution of a rigid support system. The importance of the road just above the undercrossing tunnel emphasizes the need for a highly competent monitoring system because existing structures require minimum allowable displacement and do not allow the interruption of traffic. The soils that are excavated for the construction of undercrossing tunnels are composed, in most cases, of layers of fill and / or soft soil or weak rock, showing stability problems when subjected to tunneling operations. The combination of low coverage and week ground is solved by soil improvement techniques and strengthening of the excavated cross-section with further advance with the so-called New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Another option is to build structural frames that support the surface. In this research, and based on the context of a case study, we propose the study of the construction technique comprising a portico structure composed of pipe canopy. For this paper, the technical standards used are the Brazilian ones as the case study refers to this country."

"Foreword by Lisa SchlinkSuperintendent, operations, Freeport-McMoRan Inc.,Green Valley, AZ, USAThe sixth annual Student Poster Contest hosted by the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration was held during the 2015 SME Annual Conference and Expo in Denver, CO. The contest had another record-breaking attendance of 31 entries: 27 graduate and four undergraduate. The universities represented were: Colorado School of Mines, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, University of Wyoming and West Virginia University.The competition began with an extended abstract review by a panel of judges selected from MPD members. At the SME Annual Conference, all students displayed their posters, highlighting their research. The students with the top abstracts from the graduate and undergraduate divisions presented their research at the MPD Student Poster Session Wednesday morning. The panel of judges then provided tallied scores for the abstract, poster and presentation to determine the winners of the 2015 Student Poster Contest. The first- and second-place winners of both the graduate and undergraduate divisions received $1,000 and $500 scholarships, respectively. The third through seventh places received $200 each, and all other entrants received $100 each and were invited to join the MPD Luncheon.In the undergraduate division, Annette Hein of the University of Wyoming received first place for her research on “Solvent Extraction of Europium from a Nitric Acid Solution.” Second place went to Jennifer Galvin of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for her research titled “Solvent Extraction of Neodymium Using PC88A.”In the graduate division, Caelen Anderson of the Colorado School of Mines received first place for his research titled “Fundamentals of Rare-earth Flotation Surface Chemistry: Hydroxamate Adsorption on Bastnasite”. This is Caelen’s fourth year placing in the top finisher. Second place in the graduate division went to Seyed Hassan Amini of West Virginia University for his research on “Ultra Clean Coal Production for the Solar-cell Industry.”The 2015 Student Poster Contest was chaired by Lisa Schlink (Freeport- McMoRan Inc.) and Emily Sarver (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). The geology and early history of the discovery of potash in Saskatchewan as described by Heber Cole (1) and R. V. Thompkins (2) has dealt with the distribution of the salt beds and their potash content. From the many bore holes through the Prairie Evaporites the outlines and contours of the series have been well established. The thickest section of the salt beds lies to the north of the "barren" area and forms a belt running easterly to a point west of Yorkton. The "barren" area is a region where the salt has been redissolved and the strata have slumped down, to fill the voids. This area is of interest from the standpoint of rock mechanics. The potash-rich beds extend both east and west of the region. mentioned and the top of the Prairie Evaporite is at a depth below 3200 feet from the surface near Saskatoon and dips southerly at an average rate of about five feet to ten feet per mile.

Rib brows present a significant safety hazard in underground coal mines in the United States. To address this issue, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST) are developing a practical tool to assess both the potential of rib brow formation and the stability of any formed brows. As part of this effort, a monitoring study was conducted to assess the potential for rib brow formation in coal pillar ribs. This study was conducted in a room-and-pillar coal mine where coal pillar ribs are prone to developing rib brows. Although no rib brows formed in the instrumented pillar, data from monitoring and visual observations provided valuable insights into the loading mechanisms impacting the instrumented pillar. These findings helped identify factors that may reduce rib brow formation, including the cavability of the roof in mined areas, the applied rib support, the strength of rock partings, and the overall integrity of the coal seam. The scientific findings published in the case study aid in assessing the potential of brow formation, offering additional evidence for the need to improve rib control methods in underground coal mines.

Both private industry and the Interior Department have become alarmed about the enormous amount of Federal land that has been withdrawn from appropriation either under the Mineral Leasing Laws or the Mining Law of 1872. According to a recent article by Gary Benethum and L. Courtland Lee, governmental actions have withdrawn nearly 400 million acres from the operation of the Mining Law of 1872 and over 500 million acres from the Leasing Laws. An addition al 100 million acres for the Mining Law of 1872 and 70 million acres for the Leasing Laws are either encumbered or being managed in such a way as to constitute a defacto withdrawal from mineral development. This means simply that mineral exploration end development under the Mining Law of 1872 is either prevented or discouraged in an area the size of the states of California, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and one half of Colorado combined. Under the Mineral Leasing Laws, exploration and development is either prevented or discouraged in an area equal in size to all the states east the Mississippi River, except Maine.

Water and wind erosion of toxic zinc and lead smelter waste is one of the most urgent environmental problems to be solved in the Silesia region of Poland. Over 87 x 106 Mg of various mining wastes were disposed of in uncontrolled piles leading to soil, water, and air pollution in highly populated areas. Welz and Doerschel process Pb/Zn smelter wastes were stabilized in the summer of 1994 by application of heavy loads of CaCO3 (30 Mg/ha), CaO (1.5 -15 Mg/ha), and municipal biosolids (150 -300 Mg/ha), followed by seeding with a mixture of acid-and salt-tolerant grass species selected in a pot experiment. Vegetation was successfully established on 85% of the Welz material demonstration plot area (0.5 ha), even though it was initially high in water-soluble Zn, Pb, and Cd ranging from 0.4 to 1311,0.1 to 5.8, and 0.05 to 55 mg/kg, respectively. Standing biomass averaged 3.3 Mg/ha on the stabilized Welz waste zone by the end of the third growing season (1997). The revegetation of much of the Doerschel material area failed initially because of extremely high salinity (16 dS m-1), high content of water soluble metals (Cd in particular), and heavy compaction. The area was capped (15 cm) with waste lime and retreated with bio-solids (300 Mg/ha) in 1995, and standing biomass averaged 2.9 Mg/ha in the fall of 1997. The observed plant response to bio-solids and lime indicates this approach to be an environmentally beneficial technology as compared to the traditional methods utilizing topsoil covers.

The wet process is the most commonly used worldwide for phosphoric acid (PA) production, in which phosphate rock (PR) is reacted with strong acid mainly sulfuric acid. This work aims on studying the rare earth elements (REEs) distribution during the production of phosphoric acid using different qualities of phosphate through various industrial technologies. At the onset of this work, the process started with 12 samples of PR, PA, and phosphogypsum (PG) being taken simultaneously from two different Moroccan basins (Ouled Abdoun mine represented by K09 and Gantour mine depicted by G10, G20, BG) and various production lines at two processing platforms (Jorf Lasfar and Safi). Afterward, collected samples were prepared and analyzed for REE characterization using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Based on the analysis results, a transfer factor ( TFX) was introduced with the aim of gauging the REE distribution between PA and PG. The results showed that the total concentration of REEs in different phosphate qualities ranged from 411 to 631 ppm; the major part of this concentration was attributed to the four elements: Y, La, Ce, and Nd which constitute more than 77%. The REE distribution between PA and PG depends on neither the phosphate quality nor the industrial technology used since that the distribution results showed that 55 up to 66% of the initial REEs in phosphate rock ended up in the PG. The behavior of each REE was common except for the element scandium, which transferred mainly to the phosphoric acid.

The structure and occurrence of nickeliferous laterite profiles are described and explained in terms of mineral solubility and drainage conditions. Complete profiles, from top to bottom, include: limonite zone; nontronite or silica zone; and saprolite zone. The middle zone is present only where drainage is sufficiently slow to allow saturation conditions to build up with resulting quartz or smectite precipitation. This precipitation may occur in any climate at a water table or in tropical climates with a long dry season. The degree of serpentinization of the laterite parent rock is important in determining the nature of the saprolite zone. Unserpentinized peridotite produces saprolite ores with hard residual rock cores, nontronitic or amorphous saprolitic rims, and fracture fillings of garnierite and quartz. Ser-pentinites yield relatively homogeneous serpentine saprolite, with minimal quartz or garnierite.

A parametric study was conducted using FLAC3D numerical models to examine the impact of oblique loading on the strength and yield pattern of a stone pillar using two simplified geometry types. In type-1 the side walls of the pillars were assumed to be perpendicular to the roof and the floor, while in type-2 the side walls were assumed to be vertical. These two geometries are frequently used to simplify/model the creation of pillars in dipping mines. Results from the numerical modeling indicate that dipping pillars have reduced strength compared to horizontal pillars, and they are at an elevated risk of failure. Also, an asymmetric failure propagation pattern could be obtained depending on the interaction between the pillar width/height (W/H) ratio, seam dip, in situ stresses and pillar geometry.

Mineral Development Agreements (MDA?s) are a cooperative mechanism in Canada by which the federal and individual provincial governments can coordinate their scientific, techno- logical and market development resources in order to implement measures designed to stimulate mineral exploration and development by the private sector; the objective, ultimately, being to increase the mineral industry?s contribution to provincial economies. In the latest round of MDA?s, which was initiated in 1984, a significant number of planned activities relate to industrial minerals. This paper will describe the nature and importance of MDA's in Canada and will outline the wide range of activities taking place with respect to industrial minerals.

Andalusite is a member of the sillimanite group of minerals consisting of andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. These minerals are the structural polymorphs of Al,Si05 (the anhydrous silicate of aluminium) and although chemically similar, they differ in physical properties due to their different crystal structures. For further information on the sillimanite group, see the chapter on Kyanite and Related Minerals that follows. The minerals are generally the products of the metamorphism of alumina-rich sediments and are found in schists, gneisses, or hornfelses, which have undergone either regional or thermal metamorphism from their original form. Sedimentary deposits may also form since the minerals are chemically and physically resistant to breakdown. When heated to a sufficiently high temperature the sillimanite group minerals convert to mullite with a resultant volume expansion and the liberation of silica. Due to the stability of the mullite formed, its high hot strength and resistance to chemical and physical erosion, they are widely used in the manufacture of refractories and special ceramics (Table 1). The reaction can be represented as follows: [ ] The worldwide use of these minerals depends to a large degree on their availability (Fig. 1). Andalusite, with its lower conversion temperature and the lowest volume expansion on being heated is the natural choice as a raw material to produce energy-saving refractories without prior calcination. The Republic of South Africa holds by far the largest minable andalusite deposits of the world, estimated at some 70 Mt of known in situ reserves. The only other large commercial production of andalusite comes from France, with known reserves of about 5 Mt. Potential new deposits are known from China, Ireland, Australia, and South America. World consumption of andalusite in special performance refractories has risen from less than 10 ktpy in 1960 to nearly 300 ktpy in 1990, which is due to cost effectiveness in many industrial applications compared to other conventional refractory products. Andalusite-based refractories have traditionally been used in Europe, South Africa, and the Far East; usage in America was limited in the past due to relatively high delivery costs and availability of other local refractory minerals. However, there is a significant trend towards greater use of andalusite in North America, thus opening new markets and replacing other traditional refractory raw materials. GEOLOGY Andalusite occurs in metamorphosed rocks of clay-like com- position, as in the andalusite-hornfelses in thermal aureoles (contact metamorphism), formed under conditions of high temperatures and low stress, and in regional metamorphic rocks, such as the andalusite-schists. These schists are mostly unconnected with definite igneous intrusions but were presumably also formed at high temperatures and under low stress. Andalusite can also appear in alluvial deposits associated with the primary deposits. At depths of 10 to 20 km, temperatures of up to 450°C might be expected. Another result of increasing depth is an increase of pressure due to the load of the rock cover. The load stresses involved in metamorphism is generally believed to lie in the range 0 to 10 000 bars. During contact metamorphism the increase in temperature is brought about by the injection of magma. The temperature reached in the country rock at some distance from the igneous body will always be less than the initial temperature of the intrusion, which is presumably less than 1 200°C, and will vary with time and distance from the contact. A simple metamorphic reaction involving dehydration of an aluminous sediment can be: [ ] At higher temperatures sillimanite would form at the expense of andalusite, while kyanite would be the mineral formed at higher pressures, as can be seen in the phase diagram of A12Si05 (Fig. 2).
