Mill #4 processes mildly refractory ore from Carlin Trend deposits. Diagnostic analysis of plant operating data was used to generate a mathematical model containing the key parameters influencing the gold recovery. The model was used to direct modifications to plant operating practice. The cyanide dosing strategy was changed to reduce preg-rob gold losses and cut reagent consumption A finer grind was achieved without capital investment. The density in CIL was lowered, and tighter control was exercised over plant throughput. These changes resulted in a recovery increase of at least 2%, worth $111,000/month at $300/oz, and concomitant reagent cost savings of $55,000/month.

Cemented tungsten carbides are a sintered powder - metallurgical product essential to modern industry. Because of their moderate unit price and our dependence upon foreign sources for the component raw materials, a growing recycling industry has developed in the United States. There are two basic approaches taken to recycling cemented carbides; those which leave constituting materials unaltered or direct-reuse and those which separate the constitutes back to the raw components. To separate the carbides back to their raw components usually requires expensive chemical processing and is thus confined to the lower value materials such as grinding sludges. The direct-reuse methods recycle cemented carbides back to an intermediate level, a powder capable of being recompacted and resintered into a functional end-product. "Federal regulations require the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines. Of the in-use RAs, over 95% are mobile RAs with the remainder being built-in-place (BIP) RAs. Heat/humidity buildup has been one of the major concerns with mobile RAs. For BIP RAs, however, there is a lack of in-mine heat/humidity test data to determine the extent of heat and humidity buildup. To quantify heat/humidity buildup in BIP RAs, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a series of heat/humidity tests on a 60-person BIP RA with and without a borehole air supply. At various times during the year, tests were performed with cooled, heated, or unconditioned borehole air to examine how various outdoor temperatures may affect the thermal conditions inside a BIP RA. The results show that the air supplied to a BIP RA may require heating and cooling, depending on the outside air temperatures and the temperature of the mine. For example, during tests with an external ambient temperature above 70°F and a humidity that reached 90 %RH, providing 55°F dew point air was able to keep the internal apparent temperature below the mandated 95°F. Results for each test case are presented. INTRODUCTION The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has required the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines since 2008 [1]. MSHA requires that RAs provide an environment with breathable air for entrapped miners for a 96-hour period. Heat buildup inside an occupied RA is a serious concern. Without a means to dissipate the heat and humidity generated by the occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system, the temperature and humidity inside RAs could lead to severe discomfort or heat stress depending on the mine ambient temperature before and during occupation of the RA. In its 2006 report, the West Virginia Mine Safety Technology Task Force recommended an apparent temperature limit of 95°F for RAs [2]. In 30 CFR 7.504, MSHA specifies a maximum apparent temperature of 95°F inside an occupied RA [3]. The apparent temperature is calculated using both air temperature and relative humidity [4]. To determine if their RAs meet the apparent temperature limit, RA manufacturers have been performing 96-hour-long heat and humidity tests in laboratories. During these tests, a heat input of 117 W (400 BTU/hr) per person is used to represent the metabolic heat of a single miner [2]. The heat generated by the RA’s carbon dioxide system is also accounted for in testing. To account for this heat, 50 W (170 BTU/hr) of heat per miner is used for a lithium hydroxide scrubbing system, or 30 W (100 BTU/hr) of heat per miner is used for a soda lime scrubbing system [5]. In these tests, air velocities around the RA are minimized to represent the worst-case scenario of an interruption in mine ventilation that might occur in a mine disaster."

"The Wangjialing Coal Mine is the main colliery of the China Coal Huajin Energy Limited Liability Company. The average thickness of the coal seam in District 201 is 6.21 m. Fully mechanized longwall mining was used in this district. The ventilation roadway of panel 20102 was influenced by the retreat mining of the adjacent panel 20104. Therefore, large deformation and severe roof falls occurred in this roadway, seriously influencing the safety production of this coal mine. To support the roadway, cable truss was proposed to strengthen the reinforcement of this ventilation roadway. First, numerical simulation was used to optimize the reinforcement parameters, including the cable installation angle, cable length, and eccentric distance. Based on numerical simulation results, in-situ tests were conducted in the ventilation roadway of panel 20102 with the cable truss technology. In-situ monitoring results showed that the roof-to-floor convergence and the convergence of roadway on two sides were within the safety range. Furthermore, no apparent separations occurred in the roof. These indicate that based on the designed parameters, the cable truss system can effectively maintain the roadway stability under the severe influence of the adjacent longwall mining.INTRODUCTIONCable bolts are flexible tendons composed of multi steel wires, which are wound into a strand (Chen, Hagan, and Saydam, 2018). They were initially introduced in the hard rock mining industry in the 1960s. Later, they found rapid application in coal mines to maintain the stability of excavations (Wang et al., 2015).The standard cable bolt is composed of seven steel wires with a diameter of 15.2 mm. Laboratory and in-situ tests showed that there is a low bonding capacity between the standard cable bolt and the grout (Craig and Holden, 2014; Chen, Hagan, and Saydam, 2018). Then, modified cable bolts are developed based on the standard cable bolts. They are improved by changing the surface geometry of standard cable bolts, such as birdcaged cable bolts (Hutchins et al., 1990) or nutcaged cable bolts (Hyett et al., 1993). Further tests proved that modified cable bolts have better mechanical interlock and friction between the cable bolt and grout, leading to larger load transfer capacity of cable bolts.Although cable bolts have been used for many years, failure of the cable bolting system still occurs. A common failure mode is the damage of surrounding confining medium while the cable bolt is still hanging in the roof, which is caused by the bond failure of the cable/grout interface (Hutchinson and Diederichs, 1996). To prevent the cable bolting system from failing, the cable truss system is more widely used in mining engineering."

The U. S Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop improved guidelines for selecting the type and pattern of roof support in different geologic environments (Mucho, et al., 1995). As a part of this wider research effort, a multifaceted ground control investigation was conducted at the Diamond TB Mine of RoxCoal, Inc. The study included statistical analysis of mine-wide roof bolt performance, instrumented bolt test areas, stress damage mapping, and pillar design analysis. The mine employs state-of-the-art continuous miner technology, including mobile roof supports and continuous haulage, to retreat mine the Lower Kittanning Coalbed. A herringbone section design makes the stability of the center belt entry critical to efficient retreat mining. Roof cutters formed during section development sometimes set up unstable immediate roof conditions in advance of the belt entry mobile roof supports during retreat mining.

Increased recycling of waste paper has been emphasized in recent years in both the USA and Canada for environmental and economic reasons. Removal of ink particles from the waste paper pulp is therefore necessary. One of the most promising methods for ink removal is froth flotation. Our study investigated the feasibility of a simplified flotation scheme which showed that about 90-92% ink removal can be achieved while 95-97% ink removal is achievable if a hydrophobic polymer is used ahead of flotation. The clean paper pulp recovery was over 90%. The effects of pulping pH, flotation pH, and concentrations of flotation and polymeric reagents are discussed in the paper.

"In most copper mines and concentrators, mill water is continuously recovered and reused, with fresh water added to make up for losses. When mixed, these water chemistries can lead to severe scaling, especially in pipes, tanks and pumps on the mill water supply side, reducing flows and causing significant production losses.At KGHM Robinson Nevada Mining Company, increases in the fresh water addition ratios resulted in severe scaling problems and premature pump failures thereby jeopardizing plant production. What initially appeared to be a few isolated scaling events eventually unfolded into a recurring pattern of water supply-related production losses with increasing severity. Through completion of detailed root cause analysis, chemistry modeling, laboratory work, in-plant testing and system engineering, the mechanisms of scaling were identified and addressed.Advancements in fresh water addition practices and antiscalant application methods resulted in a stepwise reduction of the mill water scaling. Cost savings and production benefits were significant to the plant’s financial metrics.IntroductionThe production of mineral and metal concentrates using the flotation process requires large quantities of water. Flotation is utilized as the primary means for beneficiation with sulfide ores. Mined ores are crushed and ground into a slurry of 20-55% solids. For each ton of ore, 400-900 gallons of water1 are needed to supply the grinding mill. Additional water is needed in the flotation circuit as well. With many modern mills operating at2 11,000-165,000 tons/day, water supply volumes can be upwards of 3,000 gpm to 100,000 gpm of flow.For plants operating at or above capacity, disruptions and restrictions in water supply flow can have a direct impact on the production and recovery of the metal. Water supply flow can be limited for a wide variety of reasons but of interest are those limitations that are due to mineral scaling. Mineral scaling is the selective point precipitation of inorganic species above saturation concentrations. Precipitated species form flow-restricting deposits in the mill water system (tanks, pumps, pipe and valves), that will eventually impact water supply to the concentrator."

In underground coal mines, three types of roof failure (2)*, tensile, local, and shear, occur in the development entries and in room-and-pillar extraction areas. Most of the tensile failures in the roof at the center of the mine opening as well as those local failures due to fracture or jointing can be controlled by roof bolts, trusses, and timbering. However, control of the shear failure at the sides of the roof (or the cutter-roof caving) has not been successful with ordinary roof control methods. The only effective method, when there is an indication of cutter-roof caving, is to use cribs, which are costly and make transportation, ventilation, and production difficult. Frequently, the operator allows the cutter roof to cave and then cleans it up rather than trying to stop it. This shear type of roof failure is often associated with large areas which may progressively involve several hundred feet of roof caving at one occurrence. At times, this shear failure occurs suddenly with little or no warning. This can result in buried equipment and great danger to the safety of personnel. This shear failure may be due to one or more of the following: high stress concentrations at the corner of the roof from (1) high horizontal to vertical load ratio, (2) orthotropic elastic properties of rock and coal, (3) greater stiffness of the immediate roof layer than of the secondary roof layer, (4) viscoelastic behavior of rock and coal, and (5) geometry and material properties of the geologic setting. Maintaining satisfactory air quality in electro-winning tankhouses has been problematic and costly, particularly as plant operating current densities have increased. Conventional approaches, including the use of beads, hollow spheres, surfactants and coalescer devices, have not proved completely effective, requiring that powerful ventilation systems be installed. As workplace and environmental regulations become more stringent, containment of the acid mist at its source is more attractive. An electrode cap system based on this approach has been developed and tested in two commercial copper electrowinning tankhouses. The design, development, installation and cost of the new electrode cap system are described.

The earthquake locations are generally scattered mainly due to a simplified velocity model or seismic event picking errors. The aim of our research was to increase the resolution of the cloud of microseismic events recorded during mining activity in the Bobrek hard coal mine on the 3/503 coalface to delineate seismically active structures using unsupervised machine learning algorithms. We presented results of applying two completely different algorithms for reducing scatter in microseismic location to all events recorded during mining activity on the coalface - the collapsing (proposed by Jones and Stewart in 1997) and condensation (proposed by Kamer in 2015). The collapsing method simplifies the seismic cloud by shifting events inside their error ellipsoids towards local source densities. The error ellipsoids are determined by errors in the measured parameters and seismic network configuration. The advantage of the collapsing method is the partial elimination of blurring of the microseismic cloud. The condensation method reduces the size of the set of seismic events without changing the geometrical information. The reduction of the number of seismic events in the catalog takes place through the condensation of localized events with larger uncertainty into events with lower uncertainty. The spatio-temporal analysis of microseismic events was performed separately on two processed clouds – collapsed and condensed one. We examined how collapsing and condensation methods affect the automatic detection of clusters of microseismicity using density-based spatial clustering of application with noise algorithms. We compared structures detected by the machine learning algorithms in both seismic clouds first created by collapsing and second by the condensation. We identified structures created by mining activity and structures related to the local tectonics activated by mining. The presented results are essential for the prediction of future tremors induced by the mining operation and tectonics and thus ensuring safety in the mine.

Past failures of coal refuse embankments have resulted in intensified efforts in inspections of coal refuse sites by the Mining. Enforcement, and Safety Administration (MESA). MESA inspections however, are mainly qualitative and are often time consuming, Therefore, in August 1975 CH2M HILL was awarded a contract to identify, develop, and test a rapid system for monitoring coal refuse embankments to aid in MESA inspections. The rapid monitoring system developed uses convergent and vertical photography from conventional fixed-wing aircraft. The system was tested on an active landslide and on two coal refuse facilities using both black and white and color infrared film. Field tests showed the system was capable of accurate measurement while providing qualitative data through photo interpretation. The accuracy of the system allows it to be used to monitor coal refuse embankments, tailings dams, major earth dams, and natural slopes. Based on CH2M HILL results cost for monitoring by rapid system was approximately 25 percent of cost by conventional ground survey.

Although the number of operating longwalls (approximately 100) has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have significantly increased and have in some cases more than doubled. As a result of the increase in production, control of respirable dust continues to be a problem. Therefore, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Dust Division, initiated a study to investigate the availability and adequacy of technology for controlling dust on longwall mining operations. The study involved 23 longwall mining operations in three different Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Each operation was visited for a full shift. Respirable dust samples were collected on face personnel and at fixed locations along the face. Parameters in place to control dust were noted with special emphasis being placed on obtaining quantitative data relative to ventilation, headgate dust controls, cutting drum sprays, external machine sprays and cutting sequence. Attempts were made to correlate dust control parameters in place at the time of the visit to dust concentrations measured at the tail, on the tail shearer operator and to the average concentration of dust determined from averaging all the measurements from the occupations sampled. The parameters in place to control dust were also compared to the gamut of technology known to be available to control dust. This paper presents a discussion on the effectiveness of the parameters in place to control dust and on the availability of technology for the control of dust on longwall mining operations.

The paper presents the results of a study which involved collection and analysis of airborne pollutant concentration data in two producing underground room and pillar metal mines which use diesel powered equipment in the area near the face. The results include the concentrations of CO2, CO, NO, NO2 and respirable particulate matter measured with the latest portable instruments, and the carbon and hydrogen contents of the particulate matter samples determined by combusting them in a Elemental Analyzer. The carbon and hydrogen contents are used to estimate the amount of diesel particulate matter in the mine ambient air. The short term grab sample concentration data, although not suitable for determining compliance with ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), are related to the TLVs so that they may be compared conveniently. Lognormal frequency distributions and the arithmetic mean of the concentration measurement data are used to compare different mine situations. Conclusions are drawn as to which pollutants are most important to control under actual mine production conditions.

A 1 t/d continuous elution pilot plan is being operated by General Mining at their Grootvlei Gold Mine using the technology developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories. Flowsheet design and plant erection was carried out by Van Eck & Lurie and completed in December 1989. Following the conclusion of six test runs designed to optimise reagent additions, it was shown that elution efficiencies of 98-99% could be achieved using reagent additions as· low as 16 kg/ton of carbon NaCN and 28 kg/ton NaOH while consistently producing eluted carbon containing less than 50 g/t gold. Significant savings were indicated when compared and power were indicated when com­pared with the traditional batch AARL, Zadra and Micron alcohol elution procedures.

Concrete-infused cloth is used in several civil and mining surface applications whose circumstances are similar to some of those in underground mining. A feature of this material is that it cannot be overhydrated. In underground conditions, however, the excess supply of water to the cloth for hydration could lead to muddy and potentially unsafe working conditions, as well as resource wastage by supplying more water to the construction site than is needed. The objective of this study is to verify the water-to-cloth ratio and study the effect of hydration level on the strength of the Concrete Cloth product. We found that the strength increases with increased hydration up to a 1:2 water-to-cloth ratio by weight, after which the strength holds steady regardless of additional hydration. This confirms the 1:2 water-tocloth ratio by weight for hydration and confirms that strength is retained even if the cloth is excessively hydrated.

A combined heavy medium-flotation process which incorporates the advantages of two widely employed cleaning methods, namely, heavy medium separation and flotation was used to achieve improved separation of coal from ash at fine sizes and to recover the heavy medium as a substantially recyclable product. The investigation was carried out in two successive phases. In the first phase, tests were performed to deter-mine the effect of different variables such as the medium density, flotation time, magnetite type, etc. on the efficiency of the process using in-plant samples from Homer City Coal Preparation Plant. In the second phase, the optimum conditions determined in the first phase were employed to determine the applicability of the process to a few Central Pennsylvania coals. It was observed that the process was very effective in recovering the magnetite. In most of the cases investigated, the magnetite was separated from the non-magnetic material at approximate-1 to 99 % recovery with a grade ranging from 95 to 99 %. The grade of magnetite decreased with increase in ash content of coal and with decrease in size of magnetite.

Roof bolting typically follows the extraction of a commodity to help keep the roof from collapsing. During 2004 to 2013, roof bolter operators had the highest number of machinery-related injuries, accounting for 64.7 percent, at underground coal mines. This paper analyzes U.S. roof bolter fatal and nonfatal lost-time injury data at underground work locations for all commodities from 2004 through 2013 and determines risk indices for six roof bolting tasks. For fatal and nonfatal incidences combined, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were bolting, handling of materials, setting the temporary roof support (TRS), drilling, tramming, and traversing. For fatalities, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were handling of materials, setting the TRS, bolting, drilling, traversing, and tramming. Age was found to be a significant factor. Severity of injury, indicated by days lost, was found to increase with increasing age as well as with increasing experience, largely due to the confounding of age and experience. The operation of the roof bolting machine used in underground mining should be a research priority given the high frequency and severity of incidents. The results also suggest that temporal factors may exist, so additional research is warranted to better understand these factors and potentially develop interventions. This research provides a datadriven foundation from which future research can be conducted for safety interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of incidences involving the roof bolter activities of bolting, handling of materials, and setting the TRS.

A petrographic study was made of the type and sources of mineral contamination occurring on phosphate rock products from Florida. Emphasis was placed on contaminants in the screened rock (+1 mm) since this portion of the product undergoes no physical beneficiation except for scrubbing to remove slimes. Since iron and aluminum con- tent of the finished product affect the salability, special emphasis was placed on identifying types and sources of these contaminants and relating chemical composition to visual characteristics. Wavellite derived from the overburden was the major aluminum contaminant with some aluminum being included as secondary clayballs. Iron occurred as phosphates in the overburden, and as colloidal oxides included in the phosphate pebbles. Chert and limestone contamination were derived from the Hawthorne formation underlying the phosphate matrix.

Metal complexed cyanides in wastewaters form as a result of interactions of free cyanide with metals present in the wastewater and exhibit varying degrees of stability, toxicity, and treatability. Thiocyanate, a pollutant commonly found in cyanide bearing wastewaters, is formed through the interaction of free cyanide with sulfur containing species (i. e. pyrrhotite) both present in the wastewater. In certain industrial processes, such as the beneficiation of gold and silver, cyanide is an essential reagent. Since free cyanide, complexed cyanides, and thiocyanate are potentially toxic to humans and aquatic organisms, these compounds must be removed from wastewaters prior to their discharge into surface or ground waters serving as potential potable water sources, marine or fresh water habitats
