"INTRODUCTION Newmont’s Twin Creeks operation, part of its Nevada operations, produces gold from two large open pit mines. Mined ore is processed at one of three on-site facilities: a refractory mill with two autoclaves, an oxide mill and heap leaching facilities. Twin Creeks also processes various off-site sourced concentrates and ore including high grade underground ore from the Turquoise Ridge joint venture with Barrick Gold Corporation. This paper discusses Twin Creeks’ strategic mine planning process which is part of an in-depth continuous improvement program called “Full Potential.” The process involves cost analysis, phase design validations, life-of-mine production scheduling optimization, mill blending strategy and stockpile management. Through this Full Potential strategic planning, Twin Creeks is creating significant value by increasing near term free cash flow and life of mine net present value (“NPV”) and achieving cost reductions. TWIN CREEKS OPERATION Twin Creeks is one of the major gold producers in Newmont’s Nevada operations (see Figure 1, 2 and 3). Located approximately 15 miles north of Golconda, Twin Creeks produced approximately 28 % of the Nevada operation’s 2013 gold production of 1.8 million ounces (Newmont 2014). The production included Turquoise Ridge sourced gold ore from the joint venture (75% Barrick Gold Corporation, 25% Newmont).At Twin Creeks, there are two large open pits, named Mega Pit and Vista Pit (see Figure 4, 5 and 6). There are 3 to 5 phases in Mega Pit and 2 to 5 phases in Vista Pit depending on the gold price assumption. There is also an underground exploration project at the bottom of the Vista Pit. Twin Creeks produces gold from a variety of ore types requiring different processing techniques depending on economic and metallurgical characteristics. To ensure the best use of processing assets, engineering and processing groups at Twin Creeks utilize a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (“MILP”) model to guide the flow of mine sequences and material routing to various process facilities (Kawahata, Schumacher and Hufford 2013)."

Molybdenite is the world’s principal source of rhenium (Re), a critical element in multiple high-tech applications. However, the Re contents in molybdenite vary by orders of magnitude on scales ranging from single grains to whole deposits. In order to better understand the systematics of this variation and what geochemical factors control molybdenite Re concentration, and hence overall Re resources, we examine global patterns in molybdenite Re contents through a compilation of > 3000 measurements of Re in molybdenite from > 700 mainly ore-bearing moderate- to high-temperature hydrothermal systems of different types. Our results are similar to but expand on those of earlier studies. Rhenium concentration in molybdenite has a lognormal distribution and varies systematically with type of geologic system, intrusive lithology, and Mo grade. The lowest-Re molybdenite occurs in greisens (geometric mean 1 ppm ± a multiplicative standard deviation of 9), quartz vein-hosted W-Sn deposits (2 ± 5 ppm), unmineralized granites and granodiorites (12 ± 8 ppm), intrusion-related deposits (24 ± 8 ppm), and porphyry W-Sn deposits (16 ± 11 ppm). Rhenium is most enriched in molybdenites from volcanic sublimates (23,800 ± 5 ppm), with skarn Fe and Au (560 ± 5 ppm and 540 ± 3 ppm respectively) and porphyry Cu and Cu-Au deposits next (470 ± 4 and 430 ± 7 ppm respectively). Among porphyries, skarns, and quartz vein-hosted deposits, Re is most highly concentrated in molybdenites from Cu and Au systems and its concentration decreases systematically through Cu-Mo, Mo, Sn, and W deposits. In nearly all cases, molybdenites from systems associated with intermediate igneous rocks contain more Re than molybdenites from systems of the same type with more felsic rock associations. The disparity between Re contents of molybdenite in felsic and intermediate systems is largest for porphyries, quartz vein-hosted, and skarn deposits and is near zero for subeconomic or barren granite and granodiorite Mo systems; felsic intrusion-related deposits have slightly higher molybdenite Re than their equivalents associated with intermediate intrusions. In most systems, molybdenite Re content does not correlate with metal grade, but may have an inverse correlation with Au grade in intrusion-related deposits (based on a small number of data points) and does exhibit a strong inverse correlation with deposit Mo grade. Dilution of Re through larger amounts (higher deposit grades) of molybdenite explains about 40% of this correlation, but the relative enrichment of Re in molybdenite from low-Mo deposits must also reflect some selective enrichment of Re/Mo in porphyry Cu systems compared to porphyry Mo systems. We found no evidence for secular increase or other systematic temporal variation in molybdenite Re content. The data regarding the use of molybdenite Re content as a proxy for mantle influence are ambiguous. Nearly all observed empirical correlations can be traced back to differences in redox state and sulfide concentration, the two geochemical factors identified here and by previous experimental work as the controlling influences on Re mobility under hydrothermal conditions. Hydrothermal systems with reducing conditions (W- and Sn-rich) tend to have low molybdenite Re even though compiled whole-rock data indicate that their source rocks have as much or more Re as those of more oxidized systems (e.g., Cu-rich). Vapor-phase exsolution, crustal assimilation, and mixing with external fluids may all enrich molybdenite Re concentrations in individual deposits and deposit types, but their extent and importance in overall hydrothermal concentration of Re is uncertain. Thus, it appears that the available molybdenite Re resource in an ore deposit largely depends on how the deposit’s redox and sulfidation conditions have varied over time and space during the timespan of hydrothermal activity. Oxidized, high-sulfide conditions tend to concentrate Re in molybdenite, whereas reducing conditions tend to leave Re dispersed at low concentrations in the bulk rock.

The Marlin deposit is a low sulphidation Au-Ag, epithermal system, with reserves of more than five million ounces gold equivalent. Marlin was discovered in December 1998, after a nine months grassroots exploration program in western Guatemala, focused on volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre. Before the Marlin discovery, several gold prospects were found along an east-west corridor of approximately 70 kilometers long, associated to regional faulting systems. The deposit is hosted in faults, within Tertiary andesitic rocks and bedded volcano-sediments. Host-rocks are argillized closer to the surface and propyllitized at depth. Mineralization occurs in multi-stage quartz stockworks and breccia veins.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 51,800 km2 (20,000 sq miles) and contain 45 Gt (50 billion st) of high-quality aggregate resources that have been legally designated as "regionally significant," providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and state testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine permitting decisions.

Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation's (KACC) entrance into the alumina market began in 1946 with the purchase of a small plant in Baton Rouge. Louisiana. Since that time KACC has been involved with the design, construct; on, and operation of many alumina plants around the world. One of these plants is located in Gramercy, Louisiana. The Gramercy Works is a multiplant installation consisting of an alumina plant, a caustic-chlorine plant, a petroleum coke calciner and a fluorochemicals plant. Each of these plants require their own specific environmental control programs to abate pollution. Kaiser has made significant progress through the years on their own initiative in pollution control. But many new challenges have been and continue to be created with the enactment of environmental laws. The 1970 Clean Air Act Amendments, the resurrection of the old "Refuse Act" in 1970 and finally the 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments prompted the formulation of our current philosophy towards the abatement of pollution. Since the formulation of these complicated pieces of legislation, others equally complicated, have come to being. The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act as amended by the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act of October, 1972, the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, the Solid Waste Disposal and Resource Recovery Act of 1976 and the Safe Drinking Water Act sighed in December of 1974 have all contributed to the challenge for an alumina plant to meet regulatory constraints. However, this paper will only discuss the alumina plant?s environmental programs designed to meet compliance with air and water pollution legislation. At the Gramercy Alumina Plant, over $25 million has been spent for pollution control since 1969. The Gramercy Plant is a prime example of KACC's commitment to meeting the environmental challenge.

In recent years, a great deal of attention has been focused on developing mill liners to increase wear resistance, improve grinding efficiency and reduce energy consumption in milling applications. The installation of an appropriate mill liner is critical as it affects the overall cost and product quality. A mill liner has two specific functions. The first is to protect the mill shell and mill ends from direct contact with the abrasive grinding media (in this case, the liner serves as a wear surface). The second function is to transport the grinding media, creating energy for size reduction. The liner acts as a lifter, mechanically transporting and cascading the grinding media. The mill lining is a major cost in the milling operation. The costs associated with the mill lining include the capital cost of the lining, downtime required to replace the worn liner and the labor for installation. Generally, in hard rock mining, the life of a mill liner in secondary ball mills is 12 to 24 months.

In beneficiation of phosphate ores it is common to use screening to produce the coarse "pebble" concentrate, and flotation to process the -1+0.1 mm size fraction. The -0.1 mm desliming product is treated as tailings. A new partially hydrophobic flocculant, P(MAAA) latex was developed to enhance flotation recovery of fine apatite particles through selective flocculation.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the feasibility of incorporating in situ stope leaching into active underground metal mines. Stope leaching, a modified in situ leaching technique, proposes to recover metals by leaching fragmented ore in existing underground openings and collecting and processing the metal-bearing solution to recover the valuable metals. If leaching solutions escape from the stope, either through geologic discontinuities or highly permeable zones in the rock, valuable metals dissolved in the solution may be lost. Escaping solutions may also contaminate ground waters. Consequently, in fractured rock, the characteristics of the fractures in the vicinity of the leaching stope must be understood before introducing actual leach solutions into the stope. Effectively characterizing a rock mass requires the integration of several disciplines including structural geology, borehole geophysics, hydrology, geochemistry, and mining engineering. This paper will focus on the general geologic and geophysical techniques that can be used to characterize the rock mass at an underground simulated stope leaching site. The results of several geophysical logging methods, tested at the site, are compared to the geologic core descriptions. Then, the? effectiveness of the different geophysical techniques in delineating fracture zones will be assessed. Knowledge gained through the geologic and geophysical analyses can be used to supplement results from hydrologic testing. This information can also be utilized in designing blast patterns and developing strategies for controlling or blocking movement of escaping leach solutions.

Scrubbing is gaining increasing recognition as a valuable tool in the treatment of Mesabi Range intermediate iron ores. In general, the earliest washing plants included log-washers in their various flowsheets. While log-washers certainly did impart a degree of scrubbing to the crude ore, such treatment bears little resemblance to the type of scrubbing being practiced today. At the time that these early plants were erected, only the true wash-ores were being processd. ("Wash-ores" are defined as crude ores in which relatively coarse chunks of almost completely liberated iron are found in a matrix of loosely-consolidated fine sand.) To treat ores of this type, sizing at approximately 65 to 100 mesh was sufficient to produce a merchantable concentrate. As crudes were being treated in which there was little "locking" of iron and silica, log-washers tended to disappear and large screens and classifiers took their place in Mesabi range flowsheets. The "screening and classification" type of flowsheet 'had its greatest usage in the 1945-55 period, generally speaking. During this same period, many operators found it necessary to supplement the "wash-ore" type flowsheet with heavy-media treatment.

The Alimak Raise Method, using the Alimak Climber, has proven to be a new, fast, economical method of driving raises at the Iron King Branch of Shat-tuck Denn Mining Corporation, Humboldt, Arizona. In order to fully understand the advantages of the Alimak Raise Climber, it is necessary first to describe the basic machine; second, a complete cycle of a raise round; and third, the comparative speed and economy afforded the Iron King operation by using this new method of raise driving: The raise climber consists of a drilling platform that is raised and lowered by two 6.2 HP compressed air motors that drive, through roller chains and sprockets, three worm gears connected in series. These worm gears drive pinions which grip the guide rail rack. The worm gems are fitted with spring-loaded couplings so that a small rock or grit in the rack is passed over without disturbing the mesh between the rack and the other pinions.

An upsurge in demand for Australian coal has seen a much needed programme for a new generation of coal ports. This paper discusses design concepts in planning a large modern terminal, with the 25 Nt/a Port Kembla and the 50 Mt/a Newcastle facilities as practical examples. The need is emphasised for a studied Master Plan, in-built materials handling flexibility and staged development. Trends in bulk ship design and loading methods are noted. Features of these Australian designs include methods of dealing with poor ground conditions, functional civil engineering for environmental protection and optimal marine structure designs.

At the beginning of the 80-s the first diamond pipe in the East-European platform was discovered in the North of the Russian Federation on the White Sea Winter coast. During several years while studying this unique area data on kimberlites and country rocks petrophysical characteristics have been collected. Considerable experience in geophysical methods when searching and exploring diamonds was accumulated, and various methods of geophysical data interpretation were used. It has been established from the analysis of geophysical data that diamond-bearing kimberlites are located in the most ancient and the most stable block of the East-European craton.

The responsible treatment of natural resources, including mineral raw materials, contributes to the protection of the environment. The management of resources and the environment encompasses reduction of emission through application of environmentally friendly processes, economical use of resources, recycling and substitution, application of energy saving processes, land reclamation and recultivation, as well as a well balanced regional and land use planning. A variety of materials are needed for measures to protect the environment. Many of these materials are, or to a large percentage consist of, mineral raw materials, which become effective either directly or indirectly in their natural state or after an appropriate industrial treatment. We call them environmental minerals. Although extraction and processing of these mineral raw materials destined for use in the protection of the environment, may have a negative impact on the environment on one hand, preventive or curing measures to protect the environment on the other would not be possible without them. We have to accept certain smaller burdens of the environment, which naturally will have to be kept at the lowest possible level, in order to avoid or minimize greater damages to nature. In the broad group of industrial minerals and rocks there is a wide variety of mineral raw materials, which lend themselves for countermeasures in favor of the environment. To hamper their production and processing through excessive environmental regulations would make the protection of the very environment more difficult or even impossible.

"This paper presents an assessment of the impact of tunneling and its associated risks on pile foundations located in the influence zone of tunneling operation. Tunneling in proximity of pile foundations introduces deformations in piles and in turn induces additional axial and bending forces. In modern mechanized tunneling, ground convergence is controlled through balancing the earth pressure at the tunnel face as well as applying pressurized bentonite through the shield. Reducing ground deformation can consequently lower the additional deformations and forces developed in the pile foundation and lessen the associated construction risk. In this paper, comprehensive detailed finite element modeling was performed to quantify the effect of the different parameters on induced forces in piles. Finite element models took into account the nonlinear behavior of soil and pile-soil interface. The modeling results are of practical importance in risk evaluation of tunneling in vicinity of pile foundations. INTRODUCTION Tunneling operation in congested urban areas becomes more frequent as demand for further utilizing underground spaces grows. In urban settings, it is not uncommon for tunnel designers to plan a tunnel route in close proximity to other structures to satisfy other competing objectives like raising the alignment to reduce excavation volume. Setting the alignment close to existing structures increases the risk involved in the project. It is the responsibility of the designer to thoroughly identify, assess, and mitigate all design risks involved. In this paper, we focus on the aspects involved in tunnel construction in proximity to existing pile foundations. Tunnel operations introduce deformation in the soil mass. Consequently, a pile located within deformation zone experiences extra forces as a result of the imposed deformation. The developed forces and bending moments can be in orders comparable with the pile capacity depending on the relative horizontal proximity of the tunnel and the relative depth of tunnel with respect to the pile length."

The performance of five dense-medium washers was evaluated in four preparation plants. Three of the plants were making a two-product separation that produced a clean coal and a refuse; one plant employed dense-medium vessels in series to effect a primary and a secondary separation. The secondary drum-type washer produced a low-ash metallurgical coal and an intermediate-ash product suitable for plant fuel or steam generation. The sharpness-of-separation was excellent for all four primary separations and the secondary separation.

The Pb-Zn ore bodies in the Pine Point district are localized in paleo-solution structures that developed as the result of post-middle Givetian subaerial exposure of the carbonate barrier complex. Sulfides are concentrated in transgressive pale-solution structures that acted as natural bypasses between aquifers and loci for mixing of fluids of different character, one of which contained metals and the other reduced sulfur. Complex ore textures indicate rapid early sulfide precipitation followed by slower sulfide growth. Evidence for both sulfide-carbonate equilibrium and disequilibrium conditions suggest fluctuations in ore fluid composition. District and ore body metal distribution patterns may reflect the nature and movement of mineralizing fluids.

Over the past 12 years, Exxon Coal U.S.A., Inc. has shipped over 150 million tons of coal from two mines, Rawhide and Caballo, located in the Gillette, Wyoming, area. These mines are operated by The Carter Mining Company, a division of Exxon Coal. Shipments have moved to more than 25 electric utility plants in the west, midwest, southwest, and south. The customer plants have represented a wide variety of configurations, sizes. design criteria, emission standards, and operations in different parts of the country. We have learned a great deal about the performance of Gillette area coals in utility power plants during this period. This paper covers some of the highlights of Exxon's experience with these coals in customer plants. I will focus specifically on things mining engineers may be able to do to make the product better for the customer's use.

SOLUTION MINING Solution mining techniques present a means of extracting soluble ores, particularly such materials as salt and potash, from horizons which are not accessible by conventional mining. In the process of dissolving materials, it is evident that solution may be complete or partial. In general, the solution mining operations described in the following section relate to complete solution of the desired compound. Even though the solution of material is complete, there may be instances in which insoluble material is present to a large extent either as granular separated particles or as insoluble layers. The process required for obtaining the desired product involves access wells to reach the deposits, sufficient water supply to yield the production goals, and the development of an underground cavity. The process of solution mining, therefore, depends to a great extent on three factors: availability of a relatively pure strata or formation of salt or potash to be mined, access well or wells, and adequate control of the solutioning process so that enlargement of underground cavities can be fairly well delineated. Since halites represent the most general ores mined by this procedure, the considerations which follow are based primarily on the production of sodium or potassium chloride. The producing formations may be in the form of bedded evc~porites wherein the salt member may be some 30 to 500 ft thick or from salt domes in which great depths of salt occur. Solution mining has been carried out to depths of nearly 10,000 ft. The recovery of saturated brine from wells drilled to effect the solution-mining process leads to further processing. In many instances, the procedures are relatively simple and involve simple recrystallieation or fractional crystallieation, while in others more complex flow systems are required before a final product is obtained. The intent of this section is to provide information relative to the basic procedures for obtaining materials which are soluble in water and to acquaint the engineer with the various aspects of the overall problem which in many instances, may become quite complex and present numerous difficulties. The storage of fluids, particularly hydrocarbons, underground has proven to be a very important part of industry operations. Cavities formed in salt provide excellent storage facilities. The formation of well-defined controlled configurations of such cavities has been possible because of better understanding of the solution process, wide experience gained over nearly 30 yr, and improved technology in drilling and completing wells, surveying caverns, and the operation of numerous types of systems. Solution mining techniques will improve in the future. Many facets of the simple operation of pumping solvents and extracting valuable minerals require further study. Developments undoubtedly will occur to further the processes of mining by solution. The geostatistical technique of conditional simulation is applied to measure the uncertainty in factor of safety predictions for soil slopes where there is incomplete knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil properties. A case study considers a natural clay slope in Canada. The sequential indicator simulation technique is used as a means for generating a series of spatial maps of soil properties for this site. These maps approximate random draws from the conditional probability density function that characterizes existing uncertainty in the spatial distribution. Factor of safety determinations are then made for each simulated map using the simplified-Janbu approach, where the computations are performed with a new computer program that can operate on irregular spatial profiles of soil properties specified on a discrete grid. A unique capability of this approach is the ability to generate the distribution of factor of safety conditional to the type, position, and value of existing site characterization measurements. This capability should reduce uncertainty in FS predictions.
