The truly educated man is better prepared to meet the challenge of the times. This challenge can be either beneficial or harmful depending upon one s orientation, Certainly man can no longer continue in the way of his father or even in the manner of his own previous experience as he seeks self-fulfillment, unless he is willing to sacrifice inner integrity--unless he is willing to compromise self-determination and self-expression. He must make a choice as society moves rapidly into high gear in the areas of automation and cybernetics. Industry, a unit of society, has a high stake in meeting this challenge, The better prepared and more mature its personnel, the better the end result as it attempts to meet the challenge. It therefore has a vital concern in proper training of such personnel, that their contribution will be of maximum quality. The specialized training required demands a broad liberal arts background which gives the individual a wider perspective upon which to base judgment. This greatly aids his development as he enters graduate school or goes directly into industry. In either case, his value to industry is enhanced. It would seem that the small liberal arts college provides the best environment for such a program, Consideration of several factors will, I hope, throw some light on the severity of the problem.

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), under sponsorship of the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research (OCR), and the American Gas Association (A. G. A. ), has been undertaking the development of one of several processes to convert coal to high-Btu gas as a means of supplementing natural gas supplies. It is anticipated that there will be a significant need for such gas in the foreseeable future in order to meet the ever increasing demands for this preferred fuel form. HISTORY The development of the HYGAS® Process is based on various studies conducted at IGT starting back as far as 1945. Initial work was directed toward production of synthesis gas with subsequent catalytic methanation. By 1964 the concept of the direct hydrogenation of coal to produce methane noncatalytically was well-founded and the chemistry was reasonably well established. Work up until this point in time was financed by the American Gas Association. In 1964 the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research joined with A. G. A. to support the program. The objective at that time was to develop the necessary know-how to enable the design of a pilot plant, a necessary step in the ultimate commercialization of the process. Work for the next three years (1964-1967) emphasized investigation of fluidized-bed technology in the hydrogasification step, where moving-bed technology had been previously employed, as well as identification of commercially available catalysts acceptable for catalytic methanation of the CO and hydrogen in the hydrogasifier effluent under operating conditions in the system. By 1967, the preliminary design of a 3 ton/hr pilot plant had been finalized, and IGT received authorization from OCR to proceed with the detailed design and construction of that facility. Due to the unbalanced top coal drawing process, the recovery ratio is low, and the equipment stability is poor in the longwall top coal caving mining (LTCC) with an inclined seam. Aimed at these problems, this paper proposes the dynamic group caving method (DGCM). The basic procedure is that when the drawn volume of top coal from a support reaches about half, the next support begins drawing top coal, and the drawing process between the two supports is half done. Taking the panel no. 8103 in Beixinyao mine as the research object, the characteristics of drawing body shape, particle movement trace, and variation of recovery ratio are investigated by using Particle Flow Code. Furthermore, the effect of mining-caving ratio on the top coal drawing law under DGCM is revealed by the simulation results, and compared with the single-opening sequence caving method (SSCM) and the doubleopenings sequence caving method, advantages of DGCM are determined in inclined seams. The results show that the drawing body can be divided into the left and the right under DGCM. Specifically, the drawn top coal particles in the left are from the upper part of this support, that in the right are from the lower part of next support, which verifies the correctness of the theoretical analysis. The characteristics of the drawing body shape are more significant when the mining-caving ratio is relatively small. In addition, with increasing mining-caving ratio, the recovery ratio of the panel both increases gradually underDGCMand SSCM.When the miningcaving ratio is less than 1:1, the recovery ratio of DGCM is obviously higher than that of SSCM, indicating that DGCM can greatly improve the recovery ratio. While when the mining-caving ratio is larger than 1:1, the recovery ratio of two caving methods is basically equal; however, the advancing time is significantly shortened under DGCM. This study are of great significance to realize high efficiency and precise caving in LTCC with an inclined seam.

One of the most important fundamental characteristics of iron ore pellets is their porosity. This importance arises from the fact that the pores are the busy avenues whereby many changes are brought about in the life and form of the pellet from the time it is made until the iron it contains emerges as a molten stream from the blast furnace. As a green iron ore pellet is first heated in the drying cycle of a typical heat-hardening process, the pores act as conduits to allow the escape of steam from the water or vapor from the oil which served as binders to hold the green pellet together. After the release of the steam (or oil vapor) the pores then act as conduits whereby oxygen can enter the pellets to 1) convert magnetite (Fe304) to hematite (Fe203), if appropriate, and 2) promote solid state grain growth between adjacent particles of iron ore. The rate of oxidation and the rate of grain growth are directly related to pore size' and pore size distribution. Rate of oxidation is also directly influenced by length of pore and length of pore is obviously related to pellet diameter. It is well to keep in mind that the heat-hardening process does not harden the mineral grains themselves. What it does is weld them together to change the green pellet from a doughy mass, composed of thousands of tiny individual particles, into a strong, intergrown monolithic structure. In the blast furnace the pores again act as conduits for gases, but in this case they trans¬port reductants such as hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (C0) which remove most of the oxygen from the ore. Rate of reduction is also directly related to pore size and pore size distribution.

Compliance standards for respirable dust which are reduced because of high quartz concentrations have become an industry-wide problem. Research on the physical and chemical character of quartz-classified particles in respirable coal mine dusts indicates that they may exist in intermixed layers or may be coated by clay or coal material. The relative amount of intermixing varies with the coal seam being mined. If most of the quartz particles of a mine dust are "pure," then the dust may have a high fibrogenic risk potential because of truly free silica and the compliance standard should be lowered. If, however, the quartz is locked inside another material matrix, or coated, a reduced compliance standard may not be appropriate.

For centuries small amounts of copper have been recovered from acid mine-drainage waters. In recent years, the expansion of copper-bearing waste dump leaching for copper recovery has established a technological basis that is rapidly converting the art of copper leaching' into a science. Leaching of copper, whether from copper-bearing ore or waste, follows well established chemical reactions. These reactions are commonly in an acid circuit, but where leaching of copper is to be made in rock that is a high acid consumer, ammonia and ammonia carbonate, as well as cyanide leach solutions, can be used effectively. Current hydrometallurgical processes are being applied at an ever increasing rate to recover the trace amounts of copper in copper mine waste by in-place leaching. Currently approximately 300, 000 tons of copper are produced annually in this manner where as recently as ten years ago, only one-eighth of this amount of precipitate copper was produced.. Where copper occurs as an oxide in higher concentrations as to be classified as an ore rather than waste, then the hydro-metallurgical processes are applied as percolation or agitation leaching in vats, pachuca tanks, or prepared heaps. This approach gives better control over the recovery of the leach solutions, particularly in the processes where ammonia or cyanide leaching agents are to be used.

This paper presents talc milling guided by a theme of "So You Want to Be In The Talc Business". Such a theme strikes a cautionary note to warn the uninitiated of potential pitfalls, and this paper will cover briefly some of the technical traps as well as one of the larger talc milling operations. It is important to our purpose to pre- sent some of the market and mineral complications that make the business of producing and selling industrial talcs much more intricate than an outsider would perceive. Metal markets by comparison are great worldwide pools into which production streams of generally identical metals can flow over a weir of market prices. Industrial talc markets are not as well defined and often must be developed by the producer working closely with a specific customer or groups of customers to prove out the attributes of the specific product from a new property. All the negatives of a new market seem to work against the introductory talc in the forms of industry or customer reluctance to change, sales prices, cost of delivery, mode of transportation, health considerations of the minerals and many more. Just locating the potential customers for a new industrial talc may be a substantial undertaking. Thus, an analogy of the worldwide metal market might compare starting a new talc operation to trying to gather up enough fallen rain drops to be able to start a production stream of a worthwhile size.

Atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) are required when using air from conveyor belt entries to ventilate working sections in U.S. underground coal mines. AMS technology has the potential to increase fire safety mine-wide, but research is needed to determine the detection and response times for fires of a variety of combustible materials. To evaluate the potential of an AMS for fire detection in other areas of a coal mine, a series of full-scale fire experiments were conducted to determine detection and response times from fires of different combustible materials that are found in U.S. underground coal mines, including high- and low-volatility coals, conveyor belts, brattice materials, different types of wood, diesel fuel, and a foam sealant. These experiments were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) located in Pittsburgh, PA, using a commercially available AMS that is typical of current technology. The results showed that through proper selection of sensors and their locations, a mine-wide AMS can provide sufficient early fire warning times and improve the health and safety of miners.

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

The capacity calculation of complex transportation systems involving variable activity times such as encountered in the mining industry are often worked out by means of simulation, which reconstructs waiting times and cycle times. The queuing theory, which mathematically calculates waiting times, has been used mainly to describe the, phenomena. This is due partly to the difficulties encountered in modelling complex systems and partly to the difficulty of reconciling the required time distribution laws with the real phenomena by means of the queuing theory. It is, however, obvious that formulas for capacity calculations would be preferable to simulation procedures because of their higher calculation speed, shorter and more flexible programs and shorter programming work. The calculation procedure presented in this paper is composed of some rather simple models, which are based on the queuing theory, and on some probabilistic and some deterministic considerations. The models are supported by observations, and to some extent by simulations. It has been attempted to find all the components of the cycle time and to include them in a comprehensive model. It is the intention to demonstrate that even quite complex mine transportation systems can be treated by means of the queuing theory with the advantages mentionned above and, without sacrificing the precision of the estimates. The speed of calculation of a wide range of parameter combinations is such that the procedure can be used extensively by a project engineer in the search for optimal modifications of the entire transportation system.

Americans are taking a more critical view of various environmental laws because the effects of those laws are becoming more pervasive and intrusive, according to William Perry Pendley. And Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt is seemingly so unpopular in the West, he no longer campaigns there for Clinton Administration policies. Pendley is president and chief legal officer of the Mountain States Legal Foundation, a public service, non-profit law association that takes on property rights cases for people who cannot afford representation. He was one of the luncheon speakers at the 101st Northwest Mining Association meeting, held in Spokane, WA in early December.

The research reported here characterizes ultrasonic ranging sensors for autonomous navigation on underground mine mobile equipment. Because ultrasonic rangers are inexpensive, have no moving parts, have no lenses to clean, are small and unobtrusive, and can measure distances in dusty environments, they are especially sui ted to underground mi ne environments. The investigation began with laboratory tests of field of view, angle of incidence, intersensor variation, and ranging accuracy of individual rangers and a ring array of 24 sensors. The results showed the sensors have good accuracy and low variability. Additional experiments at AHAX' s Henderson mine Showed the sensors could accurately and reliably measure rib features, convex and concave corners, and drift intersections. The results showed that when used and analyzed properly, the sensor data may be used reliably for underground mobile equipment navigation.

The numbers tell the story of this one. More than 50,000 people and 1,890 exhibitors took over the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 24-26 for the largest mining trade show in the world ? MINExpo. Inside the convention center, some of the largest machines used in mining were on display. Caterpillar, Liebherr, Komatsu and Hitachi displayed ultraclass offroad mining trucks and shovels. Atlas Copco and Schramm were among companies that rolled in mining drills and Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin were among the companies showing off the massive tires used by the trucks. Throughout the three halls and an outdoor display area, just about every kind of product, gadget or service used in the mining industry could be found on display somewhere.

Using an agitated column 203 mm (8") diameter by 1829 mm (72") tall with independent agitation units for the gas dispersion zone and the collection zones, respectively, permitted the independent evaluation of the attachment and the detachment mechanisms for the chalcopyrite/ silica system. Three particle size fractions were used in this study, i.e. coarse (+75 µ m), intermediate (-75 µ m + 10 µ m) and fines (-10 µ m). The optimum selection of the two agitation zones for the three particle size fractions were determined as a function of grade, recovery, residence time and air superficial gas velocity.

In many cases the roof strata of a bedded deposit may be considered as a composite of rock beams of rectangular cross section, whose component layers differ in thickness and may or may not be separable from each other when they are subjected to loading by their own weight. An analytical study of the behavior of such multiple-layer beams is extremely difficult owing to the heterogeneity and anisotropy of rock materials. The complexity is revealed by the fringe photographs obtained from several series of barodynamic photostress experiments conducted on various types of multiple-layer model beams of a medium-grained Bedford limestone. Further discussion on the applicability of barodynamic photostress techniques to the model study of the behavior of mine roofs in stratified geologic media is presented by comparing the phenomenological observations recorded in this investigation.

"INTRODUCTION Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.5 million tons of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this paper and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW Peña Colorada is a mining company which produces about 30% of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in the location map below:TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS Most mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore”. Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that unlocked significant project value in many aspects of the mine plan. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. With over 260 tons of gold reserves, the Shuiyindong gold mine is one of the largest Carlin-type gold deposits in China. A particular challenge in the processing of the ore is the presence of carbonaceous compounds, which can cause substantial losses in recoveries via the preg-robbing and adsorption of gold. To investigate the structural properties of the native carbon and to compare between different characterization techniques for such compounds, pre- and post-flotation mineral samples containing 0.9–4.8% non-carbonate carbon from the Shuiyindong mine have been examined via mineralogical and thermogravimetric approaches, as well as spectroscopic techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine edge structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and preg-robbing measurements. NEXAFS and DRIFT yielded the most reliable results, indicating that 60–75% of the organic carbon in all samples consist of aliphatic alkenes with substantial unsaturated content, highly similar to activated carbon, with the remainder being graphitic and humic. Speciation by XPS was sub-optimal due to spectral overlaps between graphitic and aliphatic carbon, and between carboxylic and carbonate functionalities, while NMR spectroscopy could not provide reliable speciation of the carbon groups. The preg-robbing strength was strongly correlated to the aliphatic content and structural disorder in the carbon, while no such relationship was found with the graphitic and humic content.

Relax: the world today is not running short of many mineral commodities, even though prices are spiraling upward. Einstein?s observation still holds true that everything is still relative, as long as one can pass on the incremental costs of production to the consumer. However, a strong consensus exists among many of the companies comprising the minerals processing industry that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the easy-to-mine, high-quality resources that make juicy profit margins, which shareholders like. For the most part, the resource cherries have all been picked, and established mineral processing companies that are exhausting their reserves, or in the process of looking to add reserves so as to create longevity for their company, have no recourse but to look long and hard at what were once considered the dregs of the earth. Even end users, such as steel companies, are now looking to become ?miners,? to establish captive iron ore resources. Owning a captive resource facilitates a dependable supply of feed materials, which translates into effective cost control and a guarantee for a thriving sustainable business in the future.

Limestone quarry Vijenac, is one of the key limestone producers in B&H. Conventional massive drilling and blasting is the technique applied for limestone exploitation. Utilized blasting scheme causes appearance of large oversize stone pieces, uncontrolled flying stone and undesirable seismic effects. In order to reduce or eliminate exposed disadvantages and to improve environment in the area of Vijenac quarry, an innovative blasting scheme was tested. Conventional blasting scheme was changed from single row, deep inclined blast holes combined with two lines short horizontal holes to multi row, inclined blast holes combined with a single line short horizontal blastholes. Applied innovative blasting scheme reduces negative blasting impact on the environment through safer working conditions, reduced amount of dust after blasting, reduced explosive and energy consumption, reduced appearance of explosive gasses and reduced earth and air vibrations as the result of seismic effects.

Visible and sometimes audible indications of excessive underground rock pressure such as pillar fracturing, squeezes on chocks, and "roof talk" are familiar to mining engineers. Such signs often precede rock failure on a larger scale and therefore may be used as a warning. Nevertheless, these subjective observations do not provide an adequate means of evaluating the existing rock pressure conditions in a mine. One method which appears to be extremely promising in determining the stability of geologic structures in general is that of monitoring their associated micro seismic activity. Mining engineers generally agree that during the process of rock deformation and failure small-scale seismic ("microseismic") vibrations are produced in the rock itself. These transient vibrations propagate through the rock structure and may be detected at a considerable distance from the failed rock by employing suitable electronic monitoring equipment. Hardy (1) has presented a detailed review of microseismic research in the mining, petroleum, and geoscience areas, and it is apparent that relatively little application of micro seismic techniques have been made in coal mines. This is especially true in North America since here most coal mines are fairly shallow and consequently are not generally subjected to excessive stresses. Furthermore, strict Federal and State mining laws limit the use of electrical equipment in coal mines complicating the use of the necessary monitoring facilities. In terms of both mine safety and economics, monitoring microseismic activity appears to be invaluable in the detection and location of over-stressed pillars and unstable roof conditions caused by development and production work. In 1970 The Pennsylvania State University Rock Mechanics Laboratory became involved in a research project, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, to investigate the feasibility of using microseismic techniques to detect and to locate potential regions of instability around a longwall coal-mine operation [Hardy and t10wrey (2); Mowrey (3)]. In this study geophones (velocity gages) located in an array of shallow boreholes drilled from the surface above the active area of the longwall were employed to detect microseismic activity, and a mobile micro-seismic monitoring facility was used to condition and record this data for later analysis. This project is unique in that measurements were made from near-surface geophones rather than geophones installed on the mine itself. Two advantages are apparent, namely that (1) there are no electrical limitations on the monitoring system and that (2) mining operations can continue normally because there is no monitoring equipment or cables in the mine.
