National income originating compared to physical production for an enterprise or an industry reflects its ability to strengthen the national economy. For a single industrial sector or for an industry this comparison can be useful to reflect changes that may occur in this ability to contribute because of changing supply-demand-income-investment equilibria. A favorable relationship can be postulated by specified economic incentive, and the accompanying technologic input required can be shown. The new index proposes the use of the Federal Reserve Board indexes of production divided by the constant dollar income originating in the petroleum industry which reflects increases or decreases in performance. When compared with other mineral industries and with, total industry, an approximation of relative strength is evident. By constructing three different hypothetical conditions for future petroleum imports, assuming a constant excess capacity requirement for domestic production, and providing an estimate for future domestic demand for petroleum, the impact on the performance index can be shown. Thus, a strong position for the petroleum and natural gas industry can be stated. If this is done, it becomes evident that because of restrictions on cost-price relationships, a drilling program that would provide enough domestic oil to meet demand may not be practicable. By difference, the amount of improvement in methods of production and processing through technologic advancements can be stated explicitly.

When I was originally asked to give this talk, I had certain preconceived ideas of the mining industry's reaction to Operations Research. It seemed at the time to be a rather simple task to collect these ideas for presentation here today. Jotting down these notions, I became concerned that overexposure to this activity called OR perhaps had clouded my outlook on what was actually being done on a nation-wide scale. I felt, to have a better cross section, a questionnaire of current industrial activity was in order. I solicited the response of some 75 mining companies varying in sizes and operating characteristics, and I am pleased to report that the response was good. I received answers from 51. The questionnaire was intended to measure the degree to which their concerns were actually engaged in OR efforts. With all due respect to the people who were so gracious as to answer the questionnaire, I feel that there is a tremendous misconception as to the designed purpose of OR. This is not to imply that there are no active OR groups in the mining industry. But by in large, the majority of the companies sampled appear to be somewhat confused as to what OR really is.

"Application of mechanical excavators for rock excavation in both civil construction and mining engineering fields has increased significantly in recent years. Prediction of the excavation performance of any mechanical excavators – tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, impact hammers, continuous miners and shearers for any geological formation is one of the main concerns in determining the economics of a mechanized mining and/or tunneling operation. A new portable linear rock cutting (PLCM) device was developed in the Mining Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University and supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK-112M859). The PLCM is used for cutting small core or block rock samples by a real-life mini disc cutter. The results from the PLCM are compared with the results obtained from the full scale rock cutting tests and theoretical model. It is found that there is reliable correlation between test results obtained from both cutting tests and theoretical model. 1. INTRODUCTION Mechanical excavators are currently the only alternatives to drill and blast due to higher production rate, increased safety, uniform muck size, less roof support, easier ventilation, continuous rather than cyclical operation, and possibilities for automatic control. The most of large civil tunneling and some mining projects are now carried out by mechanical excavators rather than drill and blast methods. Mechanical excavators can be categorized into two main groups: full-face and partial-face machines. Full-face machines such as tunnel boring machines excavate the face in one mode at the size of the cutterhead. Due to their cutting mode, the shape of the face profile by the full-face machines can only be circular. As for partial-face machines, the cutterhead is attached at the end of a boom. The face profile excavated by the partial-face machines can be from circular to horseshoe shape due to the cutting mode of the boom."

YOPES 17.1.1--CURRENT The history of surface mining essentially is one of mining coal, copper, iron and aluminum ores, of placer mining gold and tin, and of pits and quarries producing clays, gypsum, phosphate rock, sand, gravel and stone. Table 17-1 is a summary of the estimated world and United States production of crude metallic and non¬metallic ores and coal in 1969. It includes estimates of the quantities produced by surface-mining methods. Two-thirds of the 10 billion tons are mined from the surface, ranging from a third of the coal. 57% of the metallic ores, and nearly all clays, stone, sand and gravel. Production by surface methods in the United States, parallels that of the world with one exception: about 90% of the copper and iron ore is mined from the surface, whereas elsewhere only about half the copper ore is surface mined. In Canada, surface mining of the Athabasca tar-sand deposits is a recent large-scale unique operation. In surface mining of coal and, to a lesser extent, metallic ores, much waste is stripped, but in nonmetallic pits and quarries the ratio between waste and ore usually is small. Additional progress in comminution can be achieved if the compressive crushing principle commonly used at present is changed to one where particles are fragmented by the tensile growth of preexisting internal flaws or cracks, under internal waterjet pressure. This idea was studied in a number of tests and generated results and conclusions are the subject of this paper. It covers tests with different jets imposed on rock samples during compressive load as well as without any loading.

Frequently ore reserve studies utilize samples from a series of drilling or other types of sampling campaigns. Sometimes there is a mix of sample types, say for instance, channel samples from underground workings and drill core from surface drilling. Since drilling, sampling, logging, and sample preparation protocols tend to change over time, there is always a question whether the samples give similar results that vary only by chance alone. The problem of comparing the various campaigns is complicated by the presence of spatial relationships among the samples. Geostatistical tests take the spatial correlation into account, but these tests may be complicated and cumbersome to implement. A comparison method based on familiar statistical graphics is presented which accounts for the spatial relationships. It allows comparisons to be made quickly by using simple statistical graphs such as scatterplots and boxplots.

"Gold, silver and copper form various complexes with cyanide, of which only the singly charged dicyano form adsorbs appreciably on activated carbon. The adsorption of the dicyano complexes appears to be controlled predominantly by chemical reaction at the surface of a shrinking unreacted core. Metal uptake over time is non-linear, which eliminates control by boundary layer diffusion. The rate of adsorption is not enhanced by a reaction interruption, which suggests the absence of concentration gradients in the pores. Finally, the rate of adsorption increases with decreasing activated carbon size in a manner consistent with the shrinking core model. The results of this investigation accentuate the importance of efficient acid washing of carbon and removing carbon fines from the barren carbon stream. INTRODUCTION With the dwindling reserves of high-grade ores, most of the world’s gold is produced from low-grade ores by cyanide leaching. In the past, leaching was followed by the Merrill-Crowe process, in which gold is precipitated from clarified pregnant solutions by zinc cementation. This process is still being used for high-silver ores, where the cost of carbon stripping becomes prohibitive. For deposits with silver-to-gold ratios of about 4 or less, adsorption on activated carbon would be the usual solution purification step taken. The process simplifies solid-liquid separation and offers a viable solution to preg-robbing organic carbon in some ores. The modern industrial application of carbon adsorption started with the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process, where carbon adsorption was used mainly as a solution purification step. In 1973, Homestake Mining Company commissioned the first large-scale CIP plant in the U.S.A.1 Later, carbon was added earlier in the circuit to control preg-robbing by adsorbing gold cyanide onto activated carbon as soon as it is dissolved. The scheme is successful because activated carbon is a stronger adsorber than the organic carbon found in preg-robbing ores. This process came to be known as the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. Numerous research investigations have been performed on the chemistry involved in the CIP process, which at the time of its introduction was not clearly understood. Of these, research on the kinetics of adsorption probably bears the most immediate impact on industrial practice,2,3 where adsorption systems rarely reach equilibrium, if at all, and slight slowdowns in the adsorption rate can translate into significant decreases in revenue. To illustrate this, organic compounds, like flotation reagents, have been known to impair CIP circuits. However, laboratory tests showed that the organic compounds do not significantly affect the adsorption capacity of activated carbon. Rather, the harmful effect may be attributed to a lowered adsorption rate.4,5 Also well known is the faster rate at which fine activated carbon powders reach equilibrium compared to coarse activated carbon, even though the final (equilibrium) amount of material adsorbed per unit weight is the same."

During the twentieth century the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota has been the major source of iron ore for American steel mills. The Mesabi Range extends along an iron bearing outcrop known as the Biwabik formation. This outcrop is some 120 miles long and up to three miles wide. The formation is from 200 to 650 feet thick and dips 5 to 10 degrees to the southeast. The iron content of the original Biwabik formation was quite uniform, but much of this formation has been subjected to alteration. Thus major variations in iron content and mineral composition exist both laterally and vertically in the present Biwabik formation. The remaining unaltered iron formation includes the magnetic taconites which are commercially processed by Reserve Mining, Erie Mining, Eveleth Taconite, National Steel, Butler Taconite, and U.S. Steel. These six operations have a capacity of 32 million tons. per year of iron pellets and have produced approximately 170 million tons of pellets since 1956. Capacity for another 30 million tons per year of pellets is being considered by the industry for the next ten years. This increase will be obtained by construction of new plants and expansion of present operations. Thus by 1977, it is estimated that approximately 60 million tons per year of iron pellets will be produced from magnetic taconite on the Mesabi Range. The portions of the Biwabik formation subjected to intense alteration resulted in the direct shipping, wash and heavy media ores. Since 1892, 1.8 billion tons of direct shipping ore have been shipped from the Mesabi Range. This ore has been the major source of iron for American steel mills. In 1966, 12 million tons of direct shipping ore and 18 million tons of wash, jig, heavy media and other gravity concentrates were shipped from the Mesabi Range. These products generally have poorer physical and chemical properties than the iron pellets produced from magnetic taconite. It is predicted that the shipment of these materials will decrease from about 30 million tons in 1966 to 6 to 8 million tons in 1975. This decrease will be due to depletion of reserves and poor quality product.

There are two aspects of financing western coal development -- whether there is going to be enough money to finance the prospective large development of the industry, and the specific techniques of raising money for that development. To take the first question of whether there is going to be enough money around to finance your industry, I think it is quite clear that the restrictions on the development of western coal are going to be non- financial. Environmental impact problems are creating the greatest delay in coal mine development, at the moment; but getting enough personnel, mining equipment, railroad equipment, and failure of the Department of Interior to act on leasing federal coal lands all appear likely to create significant bottle- necks in the development of western coal -- larger bottlenecks than financing. Financing appears straightforward for the industry. There are many projections of the financing required to meet Project Independence goals. The National Academy of Engineers estimated that development of 500 million tons per annum of western coal would be necessary by 1985 to meet the Project Independence goals which might require $20 billion of capital spending. It is generally agreed that 500 million tons a year is not a realistic possibility. Carl Bagge?s estimate of production of 250 million tons a year by 1983 appears a more reasonable projection. The extraction of copper from sulfate leaching liquor was investigated using Acorga M5640 commercial extractant in kerosene diluent. The effects of important factors such as the extractant concentration, contact time, liquor pH, and temperature were examined on the separation factor Cu/Fe and the extraction efficiency of copper. The results indicated that nearly 92.32% copper was extracted from the leach liquor at 10% (v/v) Acorga M5640 concentration, 1:1 aqueous/organic phase ratio, 20 min contact time, pH 2.5, and 25 °C temperature. Also, the further increase in the values determined had no positive impact on the extraction of copper. Under these conditions, the separation factor Cu/Fe was obtained about 29.64. The extraction mechanism was studied applying the plot of log(D) – 2 pH against log [extractant] and it proved the association of two moles of Acorga M5640 for the extraction of one mole of copper. McCabe–Thiele diagram was constructed and a single-step extraction process was found to obtain themaximumextraction. Additionally, thermodynamic datawere investigated and the extraction process was endothermic and non-spontaneous at 298 K (ΔH = 27.05 and ΔG = 15.52 kJ mol−1). Moreover, the loaded organic phase was stripped and 80.94% copper was recovered after 20 min using 10% sulfuric acid concentration.

Acceptable working environments in production areas and service openings of Mindola Mine on the Zambian Copperbelt are currently maintained with an air volume of 1000 cu m/s and 5500 kW of installed refrigeration plant. It is planned to open up additional deeper areas of the mine for future production. Temperature problems, due to the increased heat generation from various underground sources are recognized as potential hinderances to efficient production. Findings of research work indicate that the present total heat output of 58,000 kW will inevitably increase by the second five-year period of the deepening program to 52,900 kW and by the fifth five-year period to 63,200 k\V. Estimated WB and DB temperatures, representing the total heat generation in stope faces and development headings during these same periods are predicted to increase to 53.8/40.2 °C and 35.5/42.1 °C respectively. It is assessed that the nominal refrigeration capacity needs to be progressively increased to 9,000 k\V This paper deals with the thermal problems in Mindola Mine, current heat output calculations, future prediction of temperature and heat load in various working areas of the mine with the application of computer programs and interpretation of data in order to find the effective solution for long-term planning of ventilation and air-conditioning.

The precise definition of an ultimate or economic pit has, over the years, received much attention in the literature on the subject of mine planning. Unfortunately, relatively little has been published in the area of pit sequencing and scheduling--an aspect which is typically of much greater economic significance both during the life of a mining operation, as well as in the evaluation of an exploration project. This paper discusses an overall mine planning methodology with emphasis on the design of an optimal sequence of pit expansions or phases. Although the concepts given are not new, it is hoped that some practical suggestions will be made. The paper will also describe graphical techniques which have been found useful in comparing the merits and impacts of alternate planning strategies and production schedules.

The paper forecasts whether the mix of technological, procedural and other factors that produced the increase will change in the future. The forecast is based on the base case and spreadsheet production model described in the previous paper.

The iron ore beneficiation plant at Serra-Azul Mines of ArcelorMittal, Brazil operates at a rated capacity of 3.2 million tons per year. The ore is concentrated using magnetic separation, jigging, hydrocyclones and spiral concentrators. The tailings from the process plant are generated from classifier overflow of 135 tons per hour dry solids and thickener underflow of 48 tons per hour dry solids. A systematic experimental program was carried out using Multi-gravity separator (MGS), and wet high-intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS) for recovering the iron values from both of the tailing streams while minimizing the total quantity of tailings to be discarded. The classifier overflow contained 32.3 percent iron, 49.9 percent silica and 2.18 percent alumina and was 45 percent finer than 45 microns in size. The thickener underflow sample contained 47.3 percent iron, 27.6 percent silica and 2.49 percent alumina and was 16 percent finer than 45 microns in size. Separation results on the classifier overflow sample with the MGS indicated that a concentrate containing 62.1 percent of iron, 10.8 percent silica and 0.36 percent alumina can be achieved with a weight recovery of 24.5 percent. The results with WHIMS at 6500 Gauss indicated that concentrate containing 62.6 percent iron, 8.3 percent silica, and 0.65 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 34.7 percent. 4.7 percent. WHIMS studies at 6500 Gauss on thickener underflow sample indicated that a concentrate containing 61.4 percent iron, 8.8 percent silica, and 1.74 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 57.2 percent. Based on these results, and further in-house test works, a WHIMS installation was adopted for the recovery of iron values from the tailings in the operating plant at ArcelorMittal Serra Azul Mines, Brazil.

The sign of the surface charge for alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established from non equilibrium electrophoresis measurements and on this basis the flotation response of alkali halides was explained based on the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. These surface charge results for alkali halides are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with some exceptions, specifically LiF, KCI, NaCl, KBr, RbBr, KI, and Rbl .The presence of natural oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice and the inaccuracies involved in the gaseous ion hydration free energy values used appear, in past, to be responsible for these deviations. The presence of natural oxygen defect states in KCI, KBr, RbBr, and Rbl as characterized by UV Nis absorption, was found to account for their anomalous surface charge. Further, other positively charged alkali halides, LiF, NaCl and KI, were found to be free of oxygen defect states. Nevertheless, oxygen defects can be created in these alkali halides to make them negatively charged and has been demonstrated for NaCl. Such negatively charged NaCl can be readily floated with positively charged amine collector colloids thus confirming the surface charge/collector colloid adsorption theory.

Vibrating screens and crushers are the workhorses of material sizing. Unfortunately their natural frequency is often in the range of typical supporting structures, thereby making installations prone to vibration problems. Much of the available literature regarding the support of vibrating screens is fairly confusing and outdated. This paper presents the results of utilizing accelerometers and finite element software in the analysis and design of supports for vibrating equipment. It contains data from field studies of vibrating screen and crusher installations, design of new and repair of existing supporting structures, and the correlation between field data and finite element time history analyses. Finally, the paper summarizes a method for analyzing and designing structures subjected to vibratory loads and predicting their behavior.

Because the Environmental Protection Agency has identified methane as a greenhouse gas, the importance of de gasification through gob wells has become more critical. It has been observed that the degree of methane emission is closely related to the geomechanical characteristics of coal bearing strata, roof, floor, and surrounding coal seams. Monthly production data from 250 gob wells were collected from the Warrior Basin in Alabama, and many interesting correlations were observed between methane production with longwall face width, face advancement rate, number of gob wells in a panel, and geologic columns. Extensive finite element analyses were performed to estimate the characteristics of the emission zone in an attempt to corroborate these findings. This paper describes an investigation for developing correlations between the geomechanical behavior of the methane emission zone with methane production.

U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports state that about 100 million rock anchors are installed annually in U.S. coal mines (Tadolini et al., 2006), and rock-related safety remains an issue. The majority of these coal mines have conditions that make corrosion probable in the longer term. Despite this, very little research has been performed to analyze corrosion and its effects on rock anchors in coal mines. To further evaluate the effects of corrosive conditions in coal mines on rock anchors, three different experiments were conducted during an initial Illinois Clean Coal Institute (ICCI)-funded project from 2008-2009. The results of these experiments were further studied, with additional tests, in the extended ICCI-funded project during 2011-2012. The experiments were destructive testing, electrochemical testing (potentiodynamic polarization tests) and open circuit potential (OCP) testing, conducted in order to study corrosion in environments similar to those found in Illinois coal mines with a focus on major rock anchor types typically installed underground. Destructive test results showed highest reduction in peak strength at higher pH and temperature. From the destructive test results, epoxy-coated and galvanized anchors were observed to be better when compared to uncoated. Electrochemical testing was performed to find the corrosion potential and corrosion rates of ASTM A615 steel grades 40, 60 and 75 in four different solutions of varying sulfur content at ambient temperature. The effect of temperature and pH levels on corrosion potential and corrosion rates of steel grades were also evaluated with additional electrochemical testing, where an increase in temperature with all other constant conditions caused a significant increase in the corrosion penetration rate. OCP data indicated higher corrosion potential values (-mV) for rock anchors in wet areas, when compared to those from the dry areas. OCP test results of the rock anchors from the laboratory corrosion chambers were similar to those measured in the sampled coal mines.

The Robinson Mining District near Ely, Nevada, is one of the major porphyry copper districts in the world. Within the district is an east-trending zone of altered porphyry, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and sulphide mineralization surrounded by Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, shale and sandstone, Tertiary volcanics, and Quaternary alluvium. Six major disseminated ore deposits have been exploited in this eight-mile zone. About 20% of the district production has come from disseminated ore in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks found adjacent to altered quartz-monzonite porphyry. The following brief statements summarize the inter-relationship of porphyry, alteration, metamorphism, and mineralization: 1. Disseminated copper ore does not occur in unaltered porphyry or in unmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks 2. Sedimentary rocks have been only weakly metamorphosed where intruded, by unaltered porphyry. 3. Intensely metamorphosed sedimentary rocks are found only adjacent to, altered porphyry. 4. Many hydrothermal minerals are common to both altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sediments. 5. Disseminated ore is found in altered porphyry and adjacent meta¬morphosed sedimentary rocks. 6. In general, there is a direct correlation between grade of ore in porphyry and copper content in the adjacent rocks. 7. Although phosphorus is a very important biogenic element, its concentration in coal is generally low. Phosphorus concentrations typically range from 0.001 % to 0.229% in raw coals of the contiguous 48 states. Some Alaskan coals in the Cook Inlet region contain horizons unusually high in phosphorus. A foot by foot analysis of deep drill core, containing 70 ft. of sub bituminous 'C' coal from the Beluga coal field, Alaska, showed certain increments contained as high as 17.03% P2O5 in the coal ash; 1.01 % P on a moisture-free coal basis. Crandallite has been identified by electron microprobe analyses as a phosphorus numeral in these coals. The authors could quantify calcium, barium, strontium and phosphorus concentrations from the coal attributable to crandallite. These high phosphorus coals provided a unique opportunity to study the association of phosphorus in coals using chemical fractionation for exchangeable cations and acid extractable elements. Since the source of high phosphorous horizons in Cook Inlet coals is attributed to volcanic ash, it is suggested that the profiles of acid extractable phosphorous concentration may be useful for coal seam correlations.
