Despite the seeming benefits decoupling pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals present in practice, little success has been achieved. The present study presents possible process routes for attaining selective flotation broadly capitalizing on differential oxidation between these minerals, and the use of a chelating collectors. The best performance was achieved with dithionocarbamate application following copper activation, yielding 81.4% arsenopyrite and 37% pyrite recovery. Preaeration followed by staged addition of xanthate produced 76% arsenopyrite and 31% pyrite recovery while reverse flotation of pyrite after H2O2 addition gave rise to rejection of 66% pyrite accompanied with 24% arsenopyrite.

In a world of technology and electronic communication, it is easy to forget what engineers do best with a problem: sitting around a table, exchanging views and ideas with sketches and respecting everyone?s view. This was the approach adopted in the project to arrive at a solution for the cross passage opening sup-port for the Seattle University Link Extension. Schedule and space constraints usually impede concurrent cross passage excavation and tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation. And where the space is constrained, opening support solutions that maximize available cross sections are of great benefit. While there are a number of solutions that minimize space, some of these solutions can require expensive steelwork and extensive drilling and fixing. However, following a detailed round-the-table discussion of the options and constraints, it was identified that a shotcrete shell would not only limit obstruction of the space during installation, but also permit easy installation, particularly around services, and avoid costly steelwork and drilling and fixing.

Control of the environment is as old as mining. Engineers have always had to consider how best to deal with the surface, and the character of the surface environment always affects mining method in some way. However, if the relationship of the mine to the environment is old, today's approach is new. For one thing, land, air and water formerly could be viewed simply as obstacles to be overcome or resources to be utilized to win ore at the lowest possible cost. Now we have come to realize that these nonmineral components of the environment also are highly valuable. For another thing, environ- mental protection has become a public policy issue. Again, a special public interest in land and land use is old. From the firs(, the crown claimed extra rights in valuable minerals, and to this day a multitude of laws and regulations control-and tax-land use in every country. What is new is the detailed public attention bring given to waste management practices, whether these wastes be in the form of solids, liquids or gases, and regardless of where in the environment they appear. (It is convenient to lump all mining environmental problems, including hank fires and subsidence, together under the term "waste management," for in effect that is what they are.) As a result of these changes, the mining engineer must consider that lie is dealing with two productive resources the minerals and the remainder of the environment-and he must expect that lie will be judged not only on his efficiency in recovering the one but also on his effectiveness in protecting the other. Further, in seeking to protect the environment, the modern mining-environmental engineer has a dual role. First, there is the obvious task of finding better ways for industry to cope with waste-management problems in actual operations. Second, there is the less obvious but equally important task of helping formulate appropriate public policy objectives for the environment. Throughout; the section it is assumed that mining is an acceptable land use for the tracts under consideration. The question of whether mining will be permitted at all on these tracts is a further public-policy issue, ultimately to be resolved politically and thus, since it is beyond the scope of engineering, is not a subject that can be usefully discussed in a mining handbook. Finally, none of the statements in the section are predicated on the assumption that required waste-management measures will be privately profitable in the conventional sense. Indeed, the reverse is more likely to be the case-at least if accounts are kept so as to include all appreciable costs and a normal rate of return on investment in waste-disposal and reclamation equipment.',',' However, it is clear that improved waste management will be required of mining firms and that, to a considerable although undetermined degree, this expenditure is in the best long-run interest of both public and industry. The several studies that have attempted to quantify the impact of mining on the environment are admittedly rough but still provide enough information to indicate that there is a big job to be done. Biohydrometallurgy originated, some forty years ago, from an environmental problem, namely the serious pollution of the Ohio river by acid drainage water coming from neighboring subbituminous coal mines. Studies aimed at elucidating the cause of the intensive oxidation of the iron sulfide (pyrite) inclusions of those coals, led to the discovery of a bacterium, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (Temple and Colmer, 1951), capable of acting as a catalyzer, accelerating the otherwise very slow chemical oxidation of iron sulfide to rates many orders of magnitude higher. However, it is now recognized that the biotechnology of microbial mining dates back to 1963, when the ability of this bacterium to solubilize copper from sulfide ores was ascertained (Razzell and Trussell, 1963). Much research has been carried out on biohydrometallurgy over these last 25 years and is still being actively conducted all over the world. The interdisciplinary nature of this young branch of science and technology is reflected by the variety of experts involved: microbiologists, mining engineers, hydrometallurgists, physico-chemists, mineralogists, solid-state physicists and biochemists. This intensive research effort has provided a solid background on the fundamentals of this technology, although many important issues have still to be solved, amongst which the enzymatic mechanisms controlling biocatalysis of mineral sulfides dissolution, the influence of bulk- and surface solid-state physics of metal sulfides on dissolution mechanisms, the interaction of the various strains composing natural microbial floras. Their elucidation should permit the rationalization of biohydrometallurgical techniques and the optimization of commercial processes. Biohydrometallurgy has already achieved satisfactory results: copper recovery from submarginal copper sulfide run-of-mine ores (i.e. assaying less than 0.3% Cu) by in-situ, dump and/or heap leaching is successfully practised in many countries and uranium recovery through bioleaching is competitive with other leaching processes.

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) newest operation. Production at the mine began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine produces 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) using mechanized block cave mining methods. The DOZ Mine has several major improvements when compared with previous block cave mines in the district. It has an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system. PTFI's copper and gold mining complex is located in the Ertsberg mining district in Irian Jaya, Indonesia (Fig. 1). The Ertsberg district is located in the Sudirman Mountains at elevations from 3,000 to 4,500 m (9,800 to 14,700 ft) above sea level. The topography is extremely rugged and rainfall in the mine area averages 3,000 mm/a (118 in./year). Freeport began production in the district in 1972 when the mill began processing ore from the Ertsberg openpit. Underground mining began in 1980 when the Gunung Bijih Timur-Ertsberg East (GBT) Mine was brought online using block caving methods. In 1991, the GBT Mine reached a maximum production rate of 28 kt/d (31,000 stpd). Ore from the mine was exhausted in 1994. The Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) was brought into production in 1994. It, too, used block caving methods and had a design rate of 10 kt/d (11,000 stpd). The IOZ is currently producing at a rate of 21 kt/ d (23,000 stpd). The DOZ was discovered in the mid-1980s by deep drilling from the GBT. The GBT, IOZ and DOZ deposits are all situated in the Ertsberg East Skarn System (EESS). In 1993, the first of several studies was completed that indicated that portions of the DOZ Mine could be economically mined using block caving methods. Limited development was started in 1995. Full-scale development and construction began in late 1997. The crusher and conveying system began operating during the first quarter 2000. The first of two main exhaust shafts has been com¬missioned, along with three of the four new main fans. The second exhaust shaft and fourth main fan will be in service by the end of 2001. Undercutting and production began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine will reach its design production rate of 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) in 2003. A study is under way to determine if an ultimate production rate of 35 kt/d (38,500 stpd) is feasible.

As an alternative to a million dollar, sensor based, computer dispatching system, Cyprus Pima Mining Company has installed a home¬made analog computer. The device is used in conjunction with a standard radio-dispatching system; it is inexpensive and very simple to build and operate. It enables the dispatcher to make near opti¬mum dispatching decisions and to identify all off schedule haulage trucks. Since installation, Cyprus Pima has experienced significant increases in pit productivity.

Open-pit mines are constructed in materials characterized by the complete range of geologic materials from the most recent alluvial sediments to hard intact crystalline rock. The determination of stable slopes in recent alluvium is in the realm of soil mechanics, an established engineering discipline, well founded on theoretical development and years of substantiating experience. The analytical tools of the soils engineer are chiefly derived from continuum mechanics wherein load-deformation response is governed by mass properties of the substance. At the other end of the spectrum, slopes in hard unweathered rock can generally be analyzed in a straightforward manner by the methods of discontinuum mechanics wherein the properties and orientations of joints control the response of the material. This approach is exemplified by the classical work of Terzaghi (1962). In between these two extremes is a gray area of material types which are composed of stiff soil and incompetent rock. This area is of importance to the mining engineer, since a large portion of open-pit mines is excavated wholly or in part into incompetent rock. This paper describes an approach to pit slope design in incompetent rock in which the material behaves essentially as a continuum. A wide range of geologic materials from stiff soil to poorly indurated sandstone and shale to crushed or weathered crystalline rock appear to fit in this category. These materials all possess certain mechanical properties which must be accounted for in a realistic assessment of slope stability. These properties include nonlinearity, s tress -dependency, and inelasticity. Further considerations involve residual stresses and time-dependent seepage pressures where groundwa.ter is present.

There are two places in the world where potash, trade name for potassium chloride, is economically recovered from naturally occuring brines by solar evaporation. One is at the Dead Sea and the other at Wendover, Utah. American Potash and Chemical at Trona, California recovers potash from natural brines, but uses fuel to accomplish evaporation. Under proper meteorological conditions the use of solar evaporation might be desirable from the economical standpoint. Of course, this may not be true when, if by artificial evaporation, a group of very valuable salts are recovered. This is the case of the American Potash operation at Trona. Solar evaporation has its limits. The working temperature is low. We may say, just to cover most areas of the world where solar evaporation may be practical, that it will take place between 18°C and perhaps around 45°C. In most cases the average working temperature expected will be around 25°C.

This paper reports measurement results for radio frequency (RF) propagation around 90° corners in tunnels and underground mines, for vertically, horizontally and longitudinally polarized signals. Measurements of signal power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut were performed at four frequencies — 455, 915, 2450 and 5800 MHz — that are common to underground radio communication systems. From the measurement data, signal power loss was determined as a function of signal coupling from the main entry into the crosscut. The resultant power loss data show there are many factors that contribute to power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut, including frequency, antenna polarization and crosssectional entry dimensions.

Several factors have caused less emphasis to be placed on geologic mapping in mineral exploration in the last 15 years. These include opportunities for "easy" discoveries of near surface gold and silver deposits in developed countries, and of base metal deposits as well in less developed countries, a decline of emphasis on geologic mapping in many universities, and a decline of useful mapping by government agencies in many areas. Geologic mapping is simply a way of recording geologic observations on volumes of rock larger than can be seen from one place. Since most geologic processes involve systems larger than this, mapping is also essential to understand the significance of observations made on smaller volumes of rock, such as thin sections and sample taken for chemical or isotopic analysis. To be useful, the observations recorded through geologic mapping are then interpreted to arrive at an understanding of the 3D geometry and geologic history of a volume of rock, which is used to direct mineral exploration, or any number of other purposes.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) Ventilation Division continues to evaluate proposed explosion-resistant seal designs. There are currently eleven specific designs for explosion-resistant seals that are suitable for construction in underground coal mines. Seal construction in operating mines must be equivalent to those constructed in the Experimental Mine during the explosion testing program. Accidental failures of seals have occurred due to explosion pressures below 138 Kpa (20 psi). The possibility exists that the failed seals were not properly constructed. Also, conditions in the vicinity of the seals may change. Water may accumulate against the seals, heave or sag may cause detrimental effects on the seals, and sloughage of the ribs may negate hitching. If seals are not properly installed or maintained, they could fail when subjected to explosion pressures. If seals fail for any reason, the possibility exists for explosion propagation throughout large areas of the mine. There could be catastrophic consequences to an event of this nature. This report will present a limited discussion on the construction of each of these seals and will address related issues.

The Yanacocha project is the first foreign investment in Peruvian mining since Cuajone during 1976. Three years after the project began, it has become the largest producer of gold from heap-leach operations in the world and the top producer in Latin America. The success of Minera Yanacocha SA (MYSA) opens a new chapter in Peruvian mining with the exploitation of its widely spread gold deposits. And it has attracted the interest of foreign investors in Peru’s mineral resources. Construction began on Aug. 1, 1992. The first gold bar was poured on Aug. 7, 1993 from ore from the Carachugo Mine. During 1993, Minera Yanacocha produced 2.5 t (81,000 oz) of gold and 9.4 t (304,000 oz) during1994 (40% above budget). Production was expected to exceed 15.5 t (500,000oz) during 1995 with the start-up the Maqui Maqui Mine.

The flotation behavior of two high sulfur coals using a non-ionic surfactant as collector from two series of compounds containing oxygenated functional groups was studied in detail using a 2-liter Denver flotation cell. The performance of these reagents was compared with that of an oily collector, namely dodecane. The results showed that at the same coal recovery, a much lower dosage of these non-ionic surfactants was required as compared with that of dodecane. More import was the performance of these compounds as promoters for oxidized as well as un oxidized coal. Mechanisms of interaction of these compounds with the coal are suggested.

Geotechnical design plays a key role in mine design. I A proper geotechnical design provides a safe working environment and facilitates efficient mining operation. There are mainly three design approaches I) judgmental, based on observational and experiential facts, 2) empirical, based on empirical design formulae, and 3) analytical, incorporating numerical analysis. Most design applications are based on the design methods one and two as mentioned earlier. However, complexities arise in deep underground mining operations and deep open pit mines. These complexities and difficult geological environment introduce more uncertainties and simple empirical formulae would not be adequate as a design tool. These situations require numerical modelling and analysis of the design problems including interpretation of the results obtained from the analysis. There are several tools available for performing the numerical modelling and analysis. A brief review of the available tools was addressed earlier (Basu and Kuruppu, 1995). The authors selected ANSYS (a general purpose finite element analysis tool) for use in mining geomechanics and geotechnical design. This paper includes several examples demonstrating the applicability of this software in designing structures applicable to mining geomechnics. The authors hope that the design examples will demonstrate the use of the numerical modelling and analysis application in excavation design.

Global public mineral reporting codes have driven strong governance of public disclosures of minerals information. Recently, we have seen an increase in disclosure of information related to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues, and governance of ESG information in mining companies has arguably reached a similar level of governance and diligence afforded mineral reporting. We define Resource Governance as the conjunction of environmental, social and minerals governance. A modern systems approach to Resource Governance, which combines mineral and ESG information, would provide not only reporting and governance capability, but also has the potential to sense/respond, predict, and manage ESG risks.

Urban quarries offer one of the greatest opportunities for profit in non-metallic mining with limited financial risk IF properly evaluated, planned and developed to meet market needs. Location, with respect to market, is the prime consideration. Geologic considerations and quality of rock are nearly as important. Cost factors and return on investment (ROI) are the principal financial considerations. Risk of capital is determined by weighing all factors that should be considered and how well judgements are based on information acquired. It is a simple, true axiom of business that an investment must be founded on amount of capital required with its expected return plus profit, expertise required to operate and time involved. Urban quarries generally offer excellent stone product market opportunities. Costs of land with mineral containment and processing operations are much greater than in rural areas. Environmental problems have become increasingly severe. Competition from other quarries in the market area is usually directly proportional to the profit attractiveness. Risk of capital (initial, developmental and operational) can be evaluated and reduced only by thorough analysis of the entire situation. Time and money expended on planning and preliminary investigations probably represent the most productive investment of available company resources.

Events of the mid-1970's have materially affected US coal production and transportation by railroad. Coal, as a replacement or substitute for petroleum fuels, has been hauled in significantly increased tonnages. Concurrent with the new demand, the railroad regulatory environment has undergone major changes, especially in "deregulation" activity. Those two events have produced considerable Litigation regarding coal rates. This paper discusses the factors involved with railroad rates and topics such as revenue adequacy, Ramsey Pricing, stand-alone cost, and differential pricing. In addition, an update on the western railroad merger situation and the implications for coal transportation are presented. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the current regulatory climate and future prospects.

Nickeliferous laterites were characterized by particle size analysis, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Results showed that the laterites consist mainly of nickel-substituted lizardite with cobble-like morphology and traces amounts of magnetite and phlogopite. As fluoride ions can react with silicon in the lizardite crystal structure and form metal-fluoride complexes, as well as increase the equilibrium constant of the lizardite dissolution in acid solution dramatically, the addition of minor fluoride salts (0.2wt.% NaF) gave a markedly enhanced metal extraction rate (Ni 81.7% and Co 52.3%) under the experi-mental conditions of particle size d50= 25 µm, 10% (v/v) H2SO4, reaction time 2 h, reaction temperature 90°C, liquid-to-solid ratio 3 mL g-1 and stirring at 500 rpm compared with H2SO4 alone (Ni 69.6% and Co 30.8%).

A flowsheet for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores has been developed which involves acid leaching followed by hydroxide precipitation of the metal values and then releaching of the hydroxide cake with ammonia. Investigations of the chemistry of extraction of nickel by LIX® 84-I and a developmental reagent, XI-84-IT, along with the physical properties of the organic phases are described. Based on these investigations, suggestions with regard to design of a solvent extraction plant and operating conditions are made.
