The preparation of tungsten carbide by molten-salt electrolysis was investigated. Sodium tungstate in the electrolyte and carbon from the graphite anode were the source materials, Optimum results were obtained with an electrolyte consisting of 83 mole-percent sodium chloride and 5.7 mole-percent each of sodium tungstate, sodium metaborate, and sodium hydroxide; a temperature of 1,000° to 1,025° C; an anode current density of 37 amp/dm2 or less; and an initial cathode current density of 150 amp/dm2. The yield was approximately 0.45 g/amp hr. The electrolytic tungsten carbide product contained approximately 5.4 weight-percent combined carbon as compared to 6.1 weight-percent for pure tungsten carbide. Microhardness of the electrolytic tungsten carbide, determined with a 50-gram load, varied from 3,480 to 3,970 dph. The material was friable and could be ground in a laboratory ball mill to less than 400-mesh particle size.

Placer gold and platinum-group metals (PGM) In the Slate Creek area, northern Chistochina Mining District, are derived from silicified and carbonate-altered, Cretaceous-Tertiary (?) dikes and related mafic and ultramafic rocks. Gold In the placer deposits is also derived from Tertiary conglomerate and altered Jurassic-Cretaceous argilllte. The argilllte and Igneous bedrock sources show a unique Ag-Au-Cu-Hg-PGM association that Is attributed to a combination of magmatic, hydrothermal, and supergene processes. The bedrock and placer deposits contain a variety of gold silver-lead-copper and PGM alloys. The observed geochemical, mineralogic, and alteration features are consistent with current geological models for turbidite-hosted gold deposits. No economic gold or PGM lodes were Identified, but several areas warranting more detailed investigation were Identified. Conventional geochemical sampling and analysis of small sample splits weighing between 10 and 30 grams were shown to be unreliable as a consistent means of identifying gold- and PGM-bearing bedrock. Pan concentration of pulverized rock samples was shown to be a more effective, but still Imperfect means of Identifying gold and PGM source rocks. Geochemical data and mineralogic examination indicate that gold and PGM in potential lode sources are very finely and erratically disseminated, are chemically combined with other elements, and may not be entirely free-milling or amenable to simple gravity concentration.

The technology of clay and the manufacture of ceramic products therefrom, and also the clay resources of most of the individual States, are already covered by a voluminous literature. The present resume touches these matters only briefly; its purpose is essentially to bring together in small compass certain of the elementary factors affecting the potential commercial value of a clay deposit. In its preparation the author made extensive use of the annual chapters on Clay in Mineral Resources of the United States and in the two annual issues of the Minerals. Yearbook that succeeded them. For careful review and constructive criticism of the manuscript, the author is indebted to Hewitt Wilson. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The term ?clay? includes a great variety of substances that may differ widely in chemical mineralogical and physical properties. No two clays are exactly alike. All of them however, have the prominent characteristic of becoming more or less plastic when wet. Nearly all of the useful clays can be molded into articles, will hold their shape while being dried, and can be converted into a hard, rocklike substance by heat. Clay may, and in fact usually does, consist of a number of minerals among the commonest of which are kaolinite, quartz, feldspar, iron oxides, mica, bauxite, calcite, and manganese oxides. Organic matter is often present. Pure kaolinite, which has the formula A1203. 2 SiO2. 2H2O, is ordinarily, considered to be the parent "clay substance," butt most clays contain other hydrated mixtures of alumina and silica (aluminosilicic acids) along with indefinite amounts of sand and other nonessential minerals3/ Even, this so-called inert matter affects the plasticity, drying shrinkage, ease of drying, and final density, and at high temperatures may react chemically with the clay substance.

The efficient operation of a blast furnace is primarily dependent upon efficient contact between the descending stream of solid materials and the ascending stream of gas. The United States Bureau of dines is conducting a program of research dealing with the interior of the present-day furnace. The work is being carried oat by.(1) observations on commercial furnaces end (2) experiments in the laboratory. Through the courtesy of the officials of the Illinois Steel Co. it was possible to make a detailed investigation of the interior of the shaft of Number.4 furnace at the company's South Works, South Chicago, Ill. The experimental work is to be reported in a U. S. Bureau of Mines bulletin which will include the results of several thousand observations on the interior of the shaft of this furnace. Such of the data as are presented later in this paper constitute only a brief summary.

Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with so many "inflection points" and "counterflexures" that they obscure the issue. Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration. Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.

"INTRODUCTION In compliance with those provisions of the organic act establishing the Bureau. of Mines which relate to improvement of health conditions of persons engaged in the mining, preparation, or treatment of mineral substances, sanitary surveys have been made of towns and villages housing the coal miners, metal miners, and mill and smelter employees of Utah.The purpose of the surveys is to afford studies of conditions prevailing in the various mining and smelter towns so far as concerns housing, water supplies, sewage disposal, refuse disposal the handling of foodstuffs, general sanitation, wash and. change houses, and the control of preventable diseases, all of which directly or indirectly have a bearing on the health and efficiency of employees and their families. Certain other factors have been added to the general sanitary surveys such as school and recreational facilities, which have a decided influence on contentment and efficiency. Through comparisons of favorable and unfavorable conditions and practices, and the dissemination of such information, improvements can be effected which will benefit both the employees and the employers.ACKNOWLEGMENTSAcknowledgment is made of the many courtesies shown by the officials of companies and towns visited. In some instances the towns were entirely under the control of officials of mining companies, being on company property whereas, in other instances, the towns wars incorporated not under company management. Of the about 60 million pounds of aluminum used in the Pacific Northwest in 1960, 40 million pounds or two-thirds was used by 10 companies. One of these companies made airplanes and missiles; one manufactured roofing, siding, and tubing; three produced truck tractors, truck bodies, or truck trailers; two made architectural metal products; one made irrigation and industrial products; one was a general foundry; and one was a shipyard. These companies contributed to regional growth by developing markets outside the area; some have worldwide sales. Aluminum consumption increased at an average rate of 7 percent annually from 1954 to 1960. Airplane manufacture, formerly preeminent in aluminum use, no longer was in first place in 1960. By industrial group, the leading users were manufacturers of building products, 30 percent; airplanes and missiles, 22 percent; truck tractors, truck bodies, and truck trailers; 17 percent; general foundries, 5 percent; ships and boats, 4 percent; mobile homes, 4 percent; other transportation equipment, 3 percent; and irrigation equipment and all other products, 15 percent.

In 1960, the Secretary of the Interior, acting under the provisions of Public Law 454, 80th Congress, appointed a Lignite Advisory Committee to aid in programming research on coal (lignite) of the north-central area. The chairman of this committee is the Secretary of the Interior or his delegated representative, and in all meetings held during 1960 and 1961, the Director of the Bureau of Mines, Marling J. The commission may be permitted to express its earnest hope that the litigation which comes to an end with the findings and recom- mendations herein set forth will be considered by both parties to the action as definitely and equitably decided. The commission trusts that its work will show the value of the commission form of settlement and that its work will serve as a prece- dent to be followed in disputes relative to technical subjects. If the work of the commission is productive of a tendency on the part of technical litigants to avoid the use of the courts for the settlement of disputes it will not have been done in vain. Such tendency will surely grow and ultimately such differences will be arbitrated by technically trained men without recourse to the courts of law. Appended to the report of the findings of the commission are to be found the detailed reports covering the several lines of inquiry and investigation carried on by the commission and upon which its findings are based, and also a detailed statement of the fiscal affairs of the commission. A word of explanation is necessary in regard to the fiscal statement. While each party to the litigation has agreed to bear one-half of the expense of the investigations of the commission, it will be noted that the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. is credited with $21,000, while Solano County is credited with but $6,000. In order that the investigations of the commission might go forward without interruption the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. has generously supplied funds at the times they were needed. "INTRODUCTION During the recent war attention was directed to prevent the destruction of American industries by sabotage. By Executive order of Lay 19, 1942, the Bureau of Mines was required to conduct investigations and make recommendations that would prevent loss of production of essential war minerals. The Health and Safety Branch of the Bureau of Lines was able to extend its activities with minimum loss of time to include security surveys of the important mineral facilities in the United States.A Mineral Production Security Division was established in the Health and Safety Branch with funds appropriated for that purpose by Congress in April 1942. From July 1942 to July 1945 engineers of this division, under the direction of D. Harrington, Chief, Health and Safety Branch, and J. J. Forbes, Chief, Mineral Production and Security Division, conducted investigations of 1,560 metallic and nonmetallic mines and associated facilities in accordance with the requirements of the Executive order.PURPOSEAn analysis of losses in the production of minerals shows that failure or destruction of equipment either from deliberate or accidental causes produces essentially the same result. Maximum production is insured by the prevention of subversive activities, fires, and industrial accidents."

"INTRODUCTION In a previous report3 prepared for the American Gas Association, the influence of washing coal on coke properties and on gas and by-product yields was discussed on the basis of answers to questionnaires sent to coke-oven superintendents and a review of the literature on the subject. This review indicated that the elimination of free impurities by cleaning coal improved coke quality by (a) reducing ash and sulphur, (b) decreasing clinker trouble in burning the coke, (c) diminishing cross fractures in the coke, resulting in greater resistance to breakage on handling, and less small coke and breeze, and (d) greater uniformity in chemical composition and physical properties of coke. Washing also reduced the sulphur in coke and gas and increased the yield of gas and by-products per ton of dry coal charged.This paper is supplementary to the previous report and presents some experimental data obtained with Pittsburgh bed coal from Pennsylvania and Mary Lee bed coal from Alabama.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSGrateful acknowledgment is made to F. "THE BUREAU OF MINES was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve mineral resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with that directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau sources. In emergency management, the effects of stress on the performance of emergency personnel, typically have been ignored or regarded as too enigmatic to quantify. This paper discusses the concept of Critical Incident Stress in responders to emergencies. It presents the rationale for considering stress as a significant factor in the management of emergencies. It is proposed that Critical Incident Stress Debriefing in a disaster can improve the effectiveness of response teams on site, their turnaround time on site, and post-disaster time off the job. Critical Incident Stress intervention also can mitigate potential deleterious emotional effects associated with emergency work. This paper, prepared by a U.S. Bureau of Mines researcher, offers some ideas to the mining industry in general, to mine rescue team trainers, and to developers of program simulations on the specific issue of how people, time, materials and space may be factored into a plan for emergency management. The impact of stress on emergency workers is, presented as a missing component in present emergency management models.

This report describes research directed toward the preparation of chemical oxygen (02) sources which exhibited improved 02 storage and reaction characteristics when compared to potassium superoxide (KO2). The initial focus of the research was the preparation of calcium superoxide (Ca(02)2) by the disproportionation of calcium peroxide diperoxyhydrate. The Ca(02)2) was characterized by chemical, thermal, and x-ray analyses. Several methods for scaling up the Ca(02)2 synthesis process were studied. Next, the reactivity of Ca(02)2 toward humidified carbon dioxide (C02) was evaluated and was compare o that of K02 under flow-test conditions approximating those existing in portable breathing apparatus. The reactivities of mixtures of K02 and Ca(02)2 or lithium peroxide towards humidified CO2 were also studied. Finally, an analysis of two commercial, K02-based, self-contained self-rescuers was conducted to determine the potential weight and volume savings which would be possible if Ca(02)2 or a mixture of K02 and Ca(02)2 were used as a replacement for K02.

The Smuggler is one of the mines in the Aspen district, located the central part of Pitkin County, Colo. It was first examined in July 1943 by C. R. Wilfloy, former mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, in, company with the lessees, R. D. Rohlfing of Aspen and J. W. Vanderwilt of Denver. The purpose of this examination was to sample a mineralized breccia zone that appeared continuous along the contact between the Leadville and Weber formations. These preliminary samples showed that the zone contains low but significant amounts of lead and zinc and that the minerals are partly oxidized and thus not easily concentrated. The mine was examined again in May 1946 by the senior author and William Herron, one of the present lessees of the property. This examination reviewed the previous sampling and recommended investigations by the Bureau of Mines. Sampling and drilling investigations were conducted by the Bureau from October 1946 to February 1947 and again from August 1947 to April 1948. Aspen is the center of a famous mining district that produced over $102,000,000 in silver and lead ores from 1880 to 1918, when a dispute closed down the mines (fig. 1). All of the workings below the Cowenhoven tunnel in Smuggler Mountain and the lower Durant tunnel in Aspen Mountain have been flooded since that time. The Cowenhoven portal now is caved, and Smuggler Nos. 1 and 2 tunnels are the only accessible workings in Smuggler Mountain. The only operating mine is the Midnight, situated 4 miles south of town at an altitude of 9,700 feet.

"DEFINITION OF VISCOSITYViscosity has been defined as the resistance experienced by one portion of a liquid moving over another portion, such as one molecular plane moving over an adjacent plane. A measure of viscosity is the force required to keep one plane in motion at Unit velocity, the other plane being considered stationary. Figure 1 illustrates the general idea that the surface friction between two adjacent areas will be greater the larger the molecules. Therefore it may be assumed that viscosity will be increased by molecular association or agglomeration, and likewise dissociation rill decrease viscosity. According to Maxwell (1)6 the unit of viscosity, the poise, is the tangential force per square centimeter of area of either of two horizontal planes 1 centimeter apart, one of which is fixed while the other moves with unit velocity, the space between being filled with viscous liquid of unit viscosity.The need for a satisfactory apparatus and experimental procedure for the determination of viscosity of high-melting materials at temperatures corresponding to those in pig-iron and steel making has been recognized during the past few decades. The condition of the slag during the smelting and refining periods in the iron- and steel-making processes exerts an important influence on the metal product obtained, this slag condition really meaning the state of viscosity or, vice versa, fluidity, which the slag attains under certain conditions."

This report is one of a series of Bureau of Mines Information Circulars dealing with mining methods and costs throughout the United States. It describes drifting, crosscutting, and raising operations at several mines in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, Shoshone County, Idaho. Ore bodies in the Coeur d'Alene district are generally in steeply dipping tabular ore zones, are irregular in shape, erratic in occurrence, and have been extensively mined along the strike and down dip. Because of the extended attitude of the deposits a great deal of development work is required. Drifting, crosscutting, and raising methods are described in this report. Shaft sinking is the subject of another report in the same series.

In Bureau of Mines research on recycling chrome refractory wastes, used refractories from argon-oxygen decarburization and electric steelmaking furnaces were beneficiated, concentrates were reformed into briquets, and modulus of rupture tests were conducted at 1,350° C. The test results indicated that the beneficiated minus 6-mesh material could be used for producing magnesia-chrome refractories.
