Data on the occident experience of the pebble-phosphate industry in Florida for 1937 and 1938 are combined in this report with statistics for the 7-year period 1930-36, inclusive, which were published in Information Circulars 69174/ and 69685/. The periodic publication of such data enables the pebble-phosphate industry, as well as other industries, to consider relative hazards, compare experience, and thereby help to prevent accidents. This report summarizes the work done by the Koppers Company, Incorporated, in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines on the commercial evaluation of the primary low-temperature tars produced from Texas lignite in the Rockdale, Tex., plant of the Aluminum Company of America in conjunction with the Texas Power and Light Company. The interest of the Bureau of Mines in this project is twofold. First, through its cooperative agreement with the Texas Power and Light Company the Bureau has assisted in the technical design and practical operation of the prototype, externally heated, entrained-state carbonizer for producing char for electric-power production and for primary low-temperature tar. Second, the first successful operation of the prototype carbonizers employing the Bureau of Mines-Parry process on lignitic coal in 1953-54 led to the production of large quantities of primary lignitic tar, concerning which too little was known or had heretofore been published in this country.

Nine organic derivatives of fluorine, silicon, boron, and aluminum were purified for thermodynamic studies using distillation, zone melting, and gas liquid chromatography, The unusual properties of these compounds required the development of special techniques for handling and purification. To determine purities of purified samples, new techniques for analyzing spectral data were developed.

The Bureau of Mines studied copper-nickel minerals (mainly sulfides) of the Duluth Gabbro Complex in north-eastern Minnesota to determine their response to selective high-temperature sulfatization techniques. The gabbro, containing 0.44 percent copper and 0.13 percent nickel, was ground to minus 325 mesh and sulfatized in a heated, rotating, stainless steel bench-scale retort. Tests demonstrated that over 95 percent of the copper and 80 percent of the nickel can be converted to water-soluble sulfates, depending upon the roasting conditions employed. Yield equations were developed using regression analysis for predicting the extraction of copper and nickel between the temperature limits of 520° to 670° C, the roasting time limits of 3 to 7 hours, and S02 limits of 10 to 40 percent in S02-air mixtures.

The Brenneman oil field in Grant District, Hancock County, W. VA., was selected for study by Bureau of Mines engineers because it was typical of many of the smaller petroleum reservoirs in the Appalachian region. In 1906, E. W. Marland & Co. discovered the Brenneman field by drilling a well that readied the oil-bearing .Berea sandstone at a depth of 750 feet and initially produced 200 barrels of oil a day. Most of the oil-productive area (348 acres) of the field was developed in a comparatively short time, and the initial daily production rates of some of the wells were as high as 1,000 barrels of oil a day. Although the field was a prolific producer of oil for several years, it was abandoned in 1923 when the production rate was less than 1,000 barrels of oil a year and 705,000 barrels of oil had been produced. Secondary-recovery operations were started in the Brenneman field in 1927 after useable old wells had been repaired and unsatisfactory wells had been plugged; drilling of new wells was started in 1929. The peak of the redevelopment program was reached in 1942 when 92 oil-producing wells and 26 injection wells were in use; both air And mixtures of air and natural gas were used for injection purposes. It is estimated that approximately 357,000 barrels of oil, equivalent to 1,030 barrels per acre, 105 barrels per acre-foot, 8.5 percent of the total pore volume, or 11.9 percent of the original oil in place will be produced as a result of gas-injection secondary-recovery operations. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines Petroleum Field Office, Franklin, Pa., are studying secondary-recovery projects in the Appalachian region as a part, of the Bureau's secondary recovery research and are reporting these studies so that others: can profit by the experience gained from the operations. In common with most of the other Appalachian oil fields, there was no natural water drive in the Brenneman field. The estimated oil saturation in the Brenneman reservoir at the end of economic gas-injection operation indicates that additional oil might be recovered economically by water flooding and that a pilot flood would be warranted.

6784. Barnes, V. L., and Romberg, Frederick. Gravity and Magnetic Observations on Iron Mountain Magnetite Deposit, Llano County, Tex. Geophysics, Menasha, Wis., vol. 8, No. 1, 1943, pp. 32-45. An outcrop of magnetite in the Central Mineral region of Texas is explored experimentally with a dip needle and a gravity meter. Two anomalies are observed, one due to the outcropping body and one probably due to a previously unknown body close to the outcrop. The possible attitudes of the bodies are discussed, and their masses and probable dimensions are computed from the gravitational observations. - Author's abstract.

To determine in what part and to what extent creep or movement exists in an installed rock-bolt anchor and the effect of the creep or bleedoff on the tension load on a rock bolt, as well as the effect of normal mining activity on the rock-bolt load and anchor, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests in the laboratory and in two mines using four types of expansion-shell anchors, the wedge bolt, and in one mine, explosive-anchored rock bolts. Specially mounted heavy-duty springs, calibrated to obtain load readings from spring movement, were installed on the test bolts to prevent a drastic reduction in tension load caused by slipping or seating of the anchor. A dial gage, reading to 0.0001 inch, measured movement of the anchor shell against the rock and seating of the anchor wedge plug in the shell. While all bolts had electrical resistance strain gages for load reading, only readings from the laboratory tests were used because those from the field tests were erratic. The tests revealed that most load loss resulting from static loading is due to the slippage and seating of the serrations on the anchor shell into the drill-hole wall. Dynamic loading, primarily from sudden shocks from nearby blasting, and possibly from ground movement or mining activity, will cause the anchor wedge plug to seat in the anchor shell.

An investigation was conducted to determine the relationship between ASTM and Micum tumbler data and to develop equations that would enable the conversion of data from one test method for comparison with those determined by the other , and thereby facilitate the international exchange of data . Relative strengths of 18 commercially produced cokes were determined by ASTM and Micum tumblers and ASTM shatter test . Two of the samples were coke produced for foundry use , and two were produced in beehive ovens . The remaining 14 samples were produced for blast furnace consumption and had ASTM tumbler stabilities of 36 to 58. Statistical procedures were used to relate the three test methods and also to evaluate the effect of charge weights , top sizes of coke , and types of screens specified by the two standard tumbler procedures , square - hole wire mesh for the ASTM tumbler and punched round - hole for the Micum . A significant result was that the data obtained with like screens have a higher degree of correlation with a smaller standard deviation than data from the screens specified for each tumbler .

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of the investigation discussed in this article was to evaluate the toxic hazard from gases produced when thermosetting plastic materials used for electrical insulating purposes are burned or thermally decomposed in enclosed spaces. For brevity the term ""toxicity"" is used throughout the article to refer to the nature of gases produced under these conditions. A need for immediate study of the problem was created as a re¬sult of the battle damage reports received from various United States Fleet units. These indicated that the fumes emitted when these materials were burned or thermally decomposed had, in several instances, resulted in toxic atmospheres. In attempting to develop a suitable test method for evaluating toxicity, it was recognized that no single test procedure could be expected to duplicate the variety of conditions that might exist in an actual fire aboard ship. In view of the immediate need, however, it was felt that considerable information could be obtained, at least to classify comparatively the several types of materials as to the toxic effect caused by burning or thermal decomposition, through the development of a sound empirical method which could be applied to all of the materials. On this basis, it was decided to modify the Navy flame resistance test for thermosetting plastics to render it applicable to the determination of the toxic, gases evolved when this test was employed. A wide variety of materials was tested, both molded and laminated, to cover the types commonly used by the Navy in electrical applications. Toxicity determinations were conducted at the Bureau of Mines Central Experiment Station, Pittsburgh, Pa. Parallel tests, to determine the flame resistance of the materials, were conducted at the Material Laboratory, U. S. Navy Yard, New York, N. Y."

The two volumes of this report summarize the noise control work performed by BBN on a rail personnel carrier operated in coal mines. Volume I of the report - submitted November 1977 - describes the aboveground work performed to identify the noise sources, design, fabricate, and install the treatments, and evaluate the treatments through noise and vibration tests. The current volume (II)-describes the underground work conducted by BBN to determine the deterioration, if any, of the treatments when the vehicle is operated normally in a mine. There were no significant changes in the acoustical performance or mechanical integrity of the treatments at the end of a three-month period.

The number of completed petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline in 1938, but the total capacity to process crude oil increased materially. This information was obtained in connection with the Bureau's annual canvass of refinery capacity as of January 1, 1939. In spite of the addition of a half dozen plants in Illinois and the inclusion in this year's list of several more "pot-stills" in Montana, the total number of plants, and inactive, declined from 551 on January 1, 1938, to 538 on January 1, 1939. was entirely in shut-down plants, as the number of operating plants rose from both active The decline 431 to 435. Yost of the plants dismantled were situated in Wyoming and Texas, parts or several from the latter being transported to Illinois. About 10 more East Texas refineries were dismantled in 1938, leaving about 15 plants in the field, only 8 of which were operating on January 1, 1939. Although the total completed capacity increased from 4,351,151 barrels on January l, 1938, to 4,508,555 barrels on January l, 1939, the operating capacity declined, and the inactive capacity increased about 50 percent, or from 380,955 to 574,770 barrels. These shifts in capacities reflect the comparative slump in the refining industry in 1938 after the prosperous year 1937. Daily average crude runs in 1938 were 3,192,000 barrels, from which it may be figured that the operating ratio for the active units was about 81 percent of crude and for all completed equipment 74 percent. The highest daily throughput in 1938 was about 3,400,000 barrels, at which time the reserve capacity represented in the active equipment was at least 500,000 barrels, in addition to about that much capacity shutdown. In an emergency, much more reliance could be placed on the reserve capacity of the active equipment, as much of the shut-down capacity is obsolete at present specifications and prices. Regarding obsolescence, the refiners reported 418,165 barrels of their idle capacity in good condition on January l, 1939 and 156,605 barrels in poor condition. However, it is probable that the former reflects an optimistic viewpoint. Refinery activity, as represented by new construction and dismantling, declined materially in 1938. The new capacity added in 1938 was 378,350 barrels compared with 394,680 barrels in 1937. Probably 1939 will see a much larger decline, as the new capacity under construction on January 1, 1939, totaled only 142,250 barrels compared with 283,020 barrels the preceding year. Cameroon's mining industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. The value of petroleum output was estimated at $1 billion.2 The 1982 gross domestic product (GOP) was approximately $8.4 billion. During 1981, crude oil export revenues increased in value 30%, comprising approximately 56% of Cameroon's total export earnings. The 1982-87 5-year plan emphasized, hydrocarbon and agricultural development and targeted the exploitation of bauxite and clay deposits. New petroleum legislation was promulgated on November 26, 1982. Public Law No. 82-20 detailed hydrocarbon companies' obligations concerning oil and gas discoveries and exploitation. In general, the Cameroon Government has participated in joint ventures with private companies and has levied a 57.5% petroleum tax plus adjustable royalties. Exploration expenses were paid by concession holding companies, and the Government in the past has reimbursed 50% of expenses under certain conditions.

From the standpoint of known recoverable reserves, the following is the order of importance of the beds: Upper Kittaoning, Lower Kittanning, Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Middle Kittaning, Clarion, Pittsburgh, and Redstone. 2. mown measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, me estimated at 1,859 million short tons as of January 1, 1952. Of this, 1,351 million short tons me in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimates because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of utilizing low-grade phosphatic shale as a feed for phosphoric acid production. Present practice in the phosphate mining operations of southeastern Idaho is to remove and either stockpile or waste low-grade phosphatic shales as the high-grade phosphate beds are selectively mined. Acid digestion studies were performed on uncalcined shale and on shale calcined to remove free carbon to determine phosphoric acid quality, yield, and amenability to filtration. The untreated shale, containing 21.4 pct P205, was digested with sulfuric acid in a single-tank reactor to yield phosporic acid and gypsum residue. Although 96 pct P205 recovery was attained in digesting uncalcined shale, only the calcined product gave satisfactory filtration rates. Calcined shale yielded phosphoric acid recovery of about 93 pct of the contained P205. It was higher in impurities than commercially prepared acid derived from high-grade western phosphate rock. An acid filtration rate of 745 lb P205/ft2/day was attained. This value is lower than the rate of 900 lb P205/ft that is generally considered to be acceptable in industrial production of phosphoric acid from high-grade phosphate rock.

The development of commercial natural-gas reserves in the Michigan stray sandstone horizon of central Michigan during the past few years has resulted in expansion of the natural-gas industry in that State. The location of the natural- gas reserves of Michigan in the general vicinity of domestic and industrial markets is of economic importance, and in supplying these markets with natural gas a reasonable knowledge of the extent and availability of the reserves is needed in formulating regulations for drilling gas wells and producing natural gas, in analyzing the feasibility of projects to construct natural-gas transmission lines, in promoting and developing markets for the domestic and industrial consumption of natural gas, and In solving many engineering and economic problems common to the natural-gas industry. The development of the natural-gas industry in Michigan has been related closely to the development of oil production. The potential oil production of Michigan is comparable with that in most of the eastern oil-producing States. The development of oil production probably will continue, especially in the central Michigan Basin area; and as wells are drilled to deep horizons in the search for oil, more knowledge will be obtained of the gas reserves in formations above the oil- bearing horizons.

This report describes pilot-plant studies and an economic evaluation of a process developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Albany Metallurgy Research Center, to produce synthetic rutile from a rock-type ilmenite concentrate. In this process, ilmenite blended with coke and lime is smelted in an electric arc furnace to separate most of the iron as salable pig iron and to form a titania-enriched slag of low iron content, which is treated with oxygen and titanium pyrophosphate. The titanium oxides are converted to crystalline rutile; the phosphate glass contains most of the associated impurities. The treated slag is ground and leached with sulfuric acid to liberate rutile crystals, which are concentrated by physical methods. In pilot testing conducted to obtain data for a cost estimation, a synthesized product containing about 88 wt-pct TiO2 and less than 2 pct FeO was extracted from a rock-type ilmenite concentrate containing about 45 wt-pct TiO2. The estimated fixed capital cost (on a mid-1975 basis) of a plant producing 500 tpd of synthetic rutile is $28,290,100. Based on 330 operating days per year, the estimated operating cost for this process is $351 per ton of synthetic rutile. The estimated selling price of synthetic rutile made from rock-type ilmenite is $344 per ton, based on a credit of $160 per ton of pig iron and a 20 pct interest rate of return on investment after taxes.

Cobalt-tungsten binary deposits were formed in laboratory experiments by hydrogen reduction of the anhydrous mixed vapors of cobaltous chloride and tungsten hexachloride. The materials were sublimed in seperately heated zones of reaction tube and were transported in a stream of purified helium into the deposition section of the tube where the chloride gases were reduced to metal by a countercurrent flow of hydrogen. Heattreating of the near stoichiometric binary metallic deposits converted nearly all to the intermetallic compound Co3W, however, small quantities of both cobalt and tungsten remained. Mechanical tests showed that the tensile strength of heat-treated 75 percent cobalt-25 percent tungsten deposits was twice as high as that of similarly treated deposits of cobalt.

The Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits had as its wartime objective the most effective immediate utilization of these resources in the interest of National security. Since the war, the results of individual projects are being prepared for publication as rapidly as practicable. Numerous chromite deposits were examined, among them those of the French Hill Mine in northern California. Situated 16 miles east of Crescent City, 76 miles from the nearest railroad shipping point at Grants Pass, Oreg., this deposit had a recorded yield of about l4,000 tons of metallurgical-grade chromite to the end of 1943. By the end of 1946, total production was more than 25,000 tons, averaging 43 percent Cr2O3, with a chrome:iron ratio of about 2.5:1.

The Bureau of Mines studied solid-state electromigration to determine the value of the technique as a method of purifying cerium metal. Cerium metal in bars 6 inches long and 1/2 inch in diameter was refined at 600° C by solid-state electrolysis to remove iron, copper, and manganese. Iron and manganese were electrotransported to the anode and copper was electrotransported to the cathode. The concentration of iron at the anode of a cerium bar was 800 times greater than the concentration at the cathode. The concentration of manganese at the anode was twice the value at the cathode. The concentration of copper was 170 times greater at the cathode than at the anode. A radiotracer technique was used to follow the iron migration in the cerium metal. Molybdenum, silicon, and aluminum impurities were not electrotransported.

Four short-term studies of practical ignition problems were undertaken and completed during the course of the Bureau of Mines project "Development of Specifications for Intrinsically Safe Equipment." Conclusions were as follows: (1) the most easily ignitible mixture of propane-air in a PTB break flash apparatus is approximately 5.2 percent propane; (2) miniature lamp bulbs to be used in intrinsically safe circuits are about as incendive to coal dust-air as to methane-air and should be tested in gas mixtures containing about 7.0 to 7.5 percent methane; (3) the sodium amalgam contained in high-pressure sodium lamps does not present an ignition hazard for coal dust or methane, where the lamps contain no more than 30 milligrams of amal-gam; (4) the maximum allowable surface temperature of permissible electrical enclosures should remain at 150° C despite efforts by industry groups to raise the value to 200° C.
