This report details a microcomputer-based control and monitoring network that was developed in-house by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and installed on a continuous mining machine. The network consists of microcomputers that are connected together via a single twisted-pair cable. Each microcomputer was developed to provide a particular function in the control process. Machine-mounted microcomputers, in conjunction with the appropriate sensors, provide closed-loop control of the machine, navigation, and environmental monitoring. Off-the-machine microcomputers provide remote control of the machine, sensor status, and a connection to the network so that external computers can access network data and control the continuous mining machine. Because of the network's generic structure, it can be installed on most mining machines.

More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.

The Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior is increasingly concerned with the safety and health of personnel engaged in coal-mining operations, particularly below ground. The Bureau is also concerned with improving the utilization of domestic mineral resources, and reducing the environmental impact of mineral operations. One obvious way to improve safety and minimize health hazards would be to eliminate coal mining entirely by bringing the energy value of the coal to the surface in some other way, such as by partially burning it underground to form combustible gases and bringing these gases to the surface, where their energy content can be put to use. This technique might also improve the utilization of the coal resource. ? Accordingly, the Bureau of Mines, interested in re-evaluating underground coal gasification technology in terms of current and expected conditions in the United States, requested Arthur D. Little, Inc., (ADL) to appraise the technology to determine: ? Whether the current (1971) state of the technology offers a technically feasible method for gasifying coal underground that is applicable to the reserves of bituminous and lower rank coals in the United States. ? Whether a program of research and further development of the technology could ultimately make it a technically feasible alternative to current open-pit and underground coal mining operations. ? What the nature and cost of further research and development work in the technology should be.

The term" sandstone" is applied to a rock composed of mineral grains smaller than pebbles, cemented together more or less firmly. "Conglomerate" is the name given to a rock composed of pebbles, or pebbles and bowlders, of various sizes cemented together. If the pebbles are large and well rounded the rock is sometimes called " pudding stone." Although the term "sandstone" includes all varieties, certain specific terms are applied to types characterized by particular compositions, colors, or uses. "Quartzite" is a variety in which the individual grains are so firmly cemented together with quartz that the rock will fracture as easily through the grains as through the cement; "ferruginous sandstone" is one rich in iron as cementing material, or as grains, or both; "micaceous sandstone" is one in which mica is prominent; " arkose" is a feldspathic or granitic sandstone composed of angular grains; "calcareous sandstone" is one containing considerable calcium carbonate; and" argillaceous sandstone" is one containing considerable clay. The term "flagstone" is used for a rock that splits readily into sheets suitable for flagging; "freestone" for rock than can be cut or carved readily, and with equal ease in all directions; and" ganistel'," in the United States, for sandstone suitable for the manufacture of refractories. Others are named from their characteristic colors such as " bluestone," " redstone," or " brownstone."

The Buckrange reservoir, Stephens field, Ark., is approaching the economic limit of production under present operating conditions. Over 100 million barrels of oil remaining in the reservoir will not be recovered by primary producing methods. The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Arkansas Oil and Gas Com-mission, made the petroleum-engineering study presented in this report to aid operators in evaluating secondary-recovery possibilities in the reservoir and in planning secondary-recovery programs if their initiation is decided. The Stephens field, in Columbia, Nevada, and Ouachita Counties, Ark., is about 12 miles northeast of Magnolia, Ark., and 15 miles west of the Smackover field. Surface elevations in the area average about 240 feet above sea level.

"Any burning carbonaceous material, unless supplied with enough oxygen for complete combustion, will liberate carbon monoxide. Since tobacco in its many different forms consists largely of carbonaceous material, and duo to the conditions under which it is smoked (burned), carbon monoxide should be liberated. That this is true has been shown by Armstrong.***** who found that undiluted smoke from cigars contained in some tests more than 3.00 per cent carbon monoxide, the amount present depending upon the size and closeness of packing of the tobacco during manufacture and on the rate of burning.****** Cigarets gave much less CO, varying from 0.06 to 1.40 per cent. The rate of consumption and carbon content of the tobacco are not g.ven, so that a correlation of the values reported to conditions in closed spaces where people might be assembled are difficult, if not impossible.The Bureau of Mines is interested in the general question of carbon-monoxide hazards from tobacco smoke, mainly with regard to mine ventilation. In non-gaseous mines, especially metal mines, the question arises, whether, if groups of miners are permitted to smoke while working at unventilated faces or entries, would the accumulation of tobacco smoke in these places create an' additional hazards the to carbon-monoxide poisoning. The results should, in addition be of general interest in connection with ventilation of building and inclosed places where people may be assembled and smoking is permitted. The investigation described in this report was made with the above idea in view."

The study is an economic evaluation of historical, current, and projected refractory uses in the iron and steel industry of the United States. The first part of the report presents a refractories classification and identifies principal trends in the refractories industry; such as, value and volume of shipments, prices of finished refractory products, the number of manufacturers and plants for refractories production and marketing. The main part of the report treats refractory use patterns and technologic developments affecting refractories usage in the iron and steel industry. Changes in use patterns in each furnace type, refractory, and installation costs and the future outlook for refractories in ironrnaking and steelmaking are covered. The last part of the report identifies the principal raw materials used in refractories production and treats trends in refractory raw material consumption. An appendix to the report contains historical time series graphs of shipments of refractory types used primarily by the iron and steel industry and principal refractory raw materials sold or used by producers. An equation of the line of best fit was calculated from the earliest to the latest year in each time series, usually 1950 to 1965; these were extrapolated in order to derive volume estimates for the year 1975.

A reasonably clear and broad definition of occupational disease as originated by the Supreme Court of Ohio is: "A disease contracted in the usual and ordinary course of events which from the common experience of humanity is known to be incident to a particular employment." An ailment does not become an occupational disease simply because it is contracted on the employer's premises. It must be one that is commonly regarded as natural to, inherent in, and concomitant of the work in question. The important distinction between accidental-traumatic injuries and occupational-disease injuries is that accidents occur at specific times, ordinarily are discovered readily, and usually leave no question as to the particular employer it whose development the accident occurred. On the other hand, occupational diseases may develop slowly, unknown to the employer and employee until disability occurs, and the injuries sustained are continuing disabilities over an extended period of time and may be incurred while the employee is working for one of several employers.

After a stagnant performance in 1982, gross national product (GNP), industrial production, and employment increased during 1983 in nearly all industrial nations, with the U.S. performance generally leading the uneven worldwide recovery. Real U.S. GNP increased 3.3 percent in 1983 (table I). Although investment in nonresidential structures declined, total nonresidential fixed investment in the United States was up 1.5 percent following a 1982 decrease. The increase in worldwide industrial activity and demand in 1983 put greater pressure on prices in many countries. Prices increased from less than 3 percent in the Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, the Nether-lands, and Switzerland to as much as 10 percent in nearly all the other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development nations. The annual inflation rate in the United States was 4.3 percent (based on the GNP fixed-weight price index).

This circular, which is a revision and combination of two previous publications,3 4/ presents information on the different types of equipment that may be used to analyze mine atmospheres, with particular reference to the application and limitations of each type. Such information is frequently requested by mining companies, State mining departments, and other agencies concerned with safety in mining who wish advice regarding methods of analysis of mine atmospheres and the equipment necessary for establishing laboratories for that purpose. Since the Haldane-type apparatus is particularly applicable to the accurate determination of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and combustible gases such as methane in mine atmospheres, that apparatus and the method of operation are described in detail. The circular presents results of a critical study of the accuracy attainable with the Haldane-type apparatus in the determination of methane in concentrations of the order of 0.25 percent, by volume. Analytical procedures involved in the other methods discussed are presented in publications referenced in this circular. Information is given also on the various accessory equipment needed in a laboratory for the analysis of mine atmospheres, and suggestions on laboratory design are included. Aniline points have been used to some extent for more than 20 years. to indicate the types of structures in hydrocarbons and thus to analyze mixtures of hydrocarbons . This type of analysis has been applied - principally to the low -boiling hydrocarbons found in the gasoline range . Although there is some disagreement as to their merits , both aniline point and diesel index (aniline point in degrees Fahrenheit times A.P.I. gravity at 60 ° F. divided by 100) are used rather extensively for evaluating ignition qualities of diesel fuels . In recent years aniline points have been employed in the study of lubricating - oil fractions . They also have been used to predict : the tendency of different oils to cause swelling of synthetic rubbers.5/ Recent standardization of the aniline - point determination by the American Society for Testing Materials has encouraged wider use of this test . Considerable data concerning , aniline points and critical solution temperatures in aniline have been accumulated in the course of a study of related subjects . "The handling and transportation of explosives and explosives supplies are inherently hazardous owing to their sensitiveness to impact and flame or electric arcs and sparks. Many accidents have occurred in the past during transportation of explosives, especially when they were carried by individual miners on man-trips. When electric haulage became the usual mode of transportation and shots were fired electrically, the hazards of carrying explosives and supplies on man-trips were fully realized, and in some mines all explosives were placed in one car, usually at the rear of the trip. Far-sighted managers saw the danger of this practice and provided separate trips for delivering explosives. This step was a definite advance in safety, but the latest achievement is the construction of special, rugged, nonconducting cars.Many coal-mining men have shown considerable interest in the construction of safe cars for explosives during recent months. Undoubtedly many others are interested in this phase of safety, therefore this circular is issued to give information on cars of this type now in use.Car A (fig. 1) is essentially a closed inner box separated from an outer box by an insulating lining of rubber. The double box is attached to a standard steel chassis that has spring journals and electric welding instead of certain rivets. The chassis is equipped with roller bearings. The over-all length from pin to pin is 11 feet, 9 inches; the wheel base is 54 inches, the track gage 42 inches, and the capacity eighteen 50-pound cases of permissible explosives. The box is 10 feet long, 6 feet wide, 3 feet high at the top of the arched roof, and 2 feet 9 inches at the edges. The top of the car is 46 inches above the top of the rail.The inner box is insulated from the outer box by two pieces of 1/4-inch switchboard.-insulating matting cemented together. To cover the top, two ends, two sides, and the bottom of the box requires 320 square feet of the l/4- inch matting.The walls are well-seasoned tongue-and-groove oak, 1 1/4 inches thick and 2 3/4 inches wide. A 1 1/4-inch air space is maintained by oak strips between the outer wall and the two thicknesses of 1/4-inch rubber matting. The inner box is made of 7/8-inch, well-seasoned, tongue-and groove oak fitted closely against the insulating matting. No nail, rivet, or bolt extends through the rubber insulation.The floor of the outer box is secured to the chassis by two sets of bolts through an intermediate piece of well-seasoned oak. One set of bolts is countersunk from the top of the intermediate piece of oak, and the other set is countersunk from the bottom. The countersunk portions are filled with ""insulate,"" an insulating compound. Adjacent bolts are at least 6 inches apart.The bed of the inner box is divided into six compartments by transverse strips of wood at the bottom and partitions near the roof. Each compartment accommodates three 50-pound cases of explosives. This arrangement prevents cases in adjacent compartments from touching, so that there is no possibility of end thrust of the entire load of explosives. Each inner compartment is 21 inches high, 5g inches long, and 16 1/4 inches wide. Separating strips at the floor are 3 inches wide and 1 1/4 inches thick. The outside dimensions of the 50-pound cases of explosives used are 17 1/2 inches long, 13 1/2 inches wide, and 12 1/2 inches high."

Tungsten, a comparatively new metal, is one of the important strategic war materials. In peacetime, tungsten is widely used as a filament in elec¬tric lamps and electronic tubes and is a vital constituent of some of the most important industrial alloys. High-speed tool steel containing tungsten and stellite alloys containing cobalt, chromium, and tungsten are extremely hard and resistant to corrosion. These alloys and the tungsten carbides are unequaled as cutting tools and in other wear-resistant applications. They play a prominent role in the present era of mass production. Alloys containing tungsten resist oxidation at high temperatures and have been key alloys in the development of modern aircraft. The adaptability of tungsten to new uses is expanding, particularly in the high-temperature range. Domestic production of tungsten has come from a large number of deposits in 17 of the 49 States; but, of the total domestic output from 1900 to 1956, more than 80 percent was produced from mines in North Carolina, California, Colorado, and Nevada. The average tenor of the mined ore was less than 1 percent tungsten trioxide (W03).

SULFUR poisoning of iron catalysts in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was investigated at the Bureau of Mines, because synthesis gas produced from coal contains sulfur compounds. Tests of two typical iron catalysts with synthesis gas containing known concentrations of H2S were made to determine catalyst life as a function of sulfur concentration to ascertain the type of gas purification required. Fixed beds of activated steel turnings and a fused iron oxide catalyst were investigated in sulfur poisoning tests at 21.4 atmospheres with IH2+100 gas containing 6.9, 23, or 69 mg S as H2S per cubic meter (0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 gr per 100 cu. ft.). In tests of reduced catalysts at constant temperatures, more than 80 percent of the activity was lost when 0.5 mg S/g Fe was introduced. Poisoning of nitrided or carbided fused iron oxide catalysts to a given extent required more than twice as much sulfur than for the corresponding reduced catalyst. When the synthesis temperature was increased to compensate for loss in activity, tests of the fused iron oxide catalysts at constant productivity could be continued for 19 to 98 days. The tests were terminated by clogging of the reactor, presumably caused by carbon deposition. One objective of the present work was to determine if synthesis gas, purified by the Bureau of Mines' hot-potassium carbonate process for removing H2S, OOS, and CO2, is suitable for synthesis on iron catalysts. The sulfur content of the gas purified by tills process is in the range of concentrations used in the present work. In constant-productivity tests of nitrided fused iron oxide catalysts with synthesis gas containing 6.9 mg S/m3, catalyst lives are nearly long enough for serious consideration of tills mode of operation. However, factors relating to selectivity and stability of the catalyst indicate that this type of operation is impractical for a commercial process. On this basis additional gas purification, such as iron oxide boxes following a hot potassium carbonate scrubber, is desirable.

To make a thorough survey of a coal mine in order to eliminate hazards, the competent safety engineer must be familiar with mere than one branch of engineering. It is essential that he know the properties of mine gases and the methods of detecting them, as well as hew to prevent dangerous as accumulations. It is also essential that he understand the action of overlying strata when the coal is removed, and the proper methods of protection by timbering or other suitable means of support. He must know the value of protective clothing in reducing injuries and mast be informed as to the correct handling and use of explosives to avoid premature blasts, misfires, and ether failures in blasting practice. He must understand hew to operate locomotives and cutting, loading, and various other types of machines to be able to recommend effective safeguards for protecting the men who use them in addition to being informed as 'to these and many ether activities connected with the mining of coal, he must net overlook electrical engineering if he wishes to combat the fire, shook, and ignition hazards attendant upon the use of electrical machinery and circuits in and around the mine intelligently. There are many points relating to safely in the selection, maintenance, and use of electrical circuits and equipment that are perfectly obvious to the electrical engineer but perhaps are not se evident to those not trained in this particular branch of engineering. Engineers of the U.S. Bureau of Mines who have made a special laboratory study of electricity as related to safety in minus haw e also made inspections of electrical installations at a large number of bituminous mines. These inspections have revealed practices and conditions that not only do not contribute to safety but that add nothing to efficiency and economy in the operation of the mine.

"The chromite deposits of Red Mountain, 10,miles southeast of Seldovia, Alaska, are in an intrusive of ultramafic rocks. The earliest reference to the deposits was made by U.S. Grant3/; J.B. Mertic, Jr. 4/ made a brief examination in 1917; and A.C. Gill5/ spent 7 weeks studying the ore bodies and geology of the region in 1918. The Federal Geological Survey had a field party in the region from July until September 1940 and the Red Mountain area was mapped and geological data were assembled by P.W. Guild.6/A preliminary investigation of the Kenai chromite deposits was made in July 1941 by R. S. Sanford,7/district engineer of the Bureau of Mines, accompanied by P. W. Guild, assistant geologist of the Geologi¬cal Survey. This was followed by surface sampling and core drilling, which were completed in September 1942 under the direction of John W. Cole,8 associate engineer of the Bureau of Mines. G. O. Gates, associate geologist, and A, B. Unkelsbay, junior geologist, of the Geological Survey, logged cores and interpreted geologic features revealed by Bureau of Mines drilling and trenching.9/J. C. Roehm, associate engineer of the Territorial Department of Mines; examined the Red Mountain area in august 1941.10/Additional exploration of other deposits in. the Red Mountain area was completed during the summer of 194. Work consisted of surface sampling, core drilling, and mapping. G. O. Gates, associate geologist of the Geological Survey, spent 4 days in August investigating results of the Bureau of Mines program.Throughout the exploratory work conducted by the Bureau of Mines the cooperation of Red Mountain Chromite, Inc., and especially of John Blodgett, Jr., and Collis 2, Druley, president and superintendent, respectively, was greatly appreciated. Use of their camp in the Windy River cirque and shops at Kasitsna Bay facilitated the Bureau of Mines program."

The Belize economy recorded modest growth during 1980; the growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) in real terms was between 1% and 2%. At current prices, the 1980 GDP reached $108 million2. This output was largely attributed to the performance of a few industries, mostly nonminerals. Such performance improved significantly the balance of payments situation by reducing the deficit from $19 million in 1979 to $4 million in 1980. The rate of inflation was an estimated 18% in 1980 and would have been greater if not for a conservative monetary policy and price control on a number of essential items. Expert earnings increased $43 million, or 50%, from the 1979 level. After increasing more than 25% in 1979, imports increased only 6% in 1980 to a level of $141 million owing to the decline in investment and stabilization of petroleum prices. The balance of trade deficit was $9.8 million in 1980, a marked improvement from the 1979 level of $45.1 million. The mineral output for Belize accounted for only a fraction of 1% of the GDP. Such activity was limited to the production of limestone, marl, and sand and gravel, all of which were primarily used in construction of the Northern Highway between Orangewalk and Belize City. Mineral resources are deficient or nonexistent in Belize for the majority of metals and nonmetals, although the Government and others continue to believe that petroleum must exist in Belize. The proximity to Mexican oilfields and the growing finds in the Peters area of Guatemala support this expectation. Coal research and related activities in 1964 by the Bureau of Mines resulted in many advances in the production, preparation, and utilization of this valuable natural resource. Mining research during the year was marked by work on hydraulic mining, coalbed degasification, mine drainage control, mine sealing, strip-mine rehabilitation, and quenching of mine-refuse fires. Bureau research continued to produce information leading to increased safety in underground mining. Such research included roof and rib control via bolting and bonding, pressure monitoring of coal and mine rock during mining operations, and development of safety devices for detecting conditions leading to roof falls. Other safety work was continued on methane detectors, coal-dust suppression, and mine venti lation equipment and techniques. Mine explosion and explosives research, mine equipment and materials, safety rule modernization, and safety education and training of mine workmen were continued. Coal storage and preparation work in 1964 ranged from freezeproofing of lignite for rail shipment, through washability studies of coals and washing equipment, to research on new ways to remove ash and sulfur from coal. Electric power production, which ,accounts for a major portion of the market for coal, received further study. Unique power generation systems, inc luding coal-burning gas turbine and megnetohydrodynamic generators, were intensively investigated. Conventional power systems were improved through continuation of work on furnace performance, powerplant stack gas purification, and engineering and boiler water service.
