Approximately 270,000 cu yd (20[0],000 cu m) of inferred subeconomic auriferous gravel resources were estimated in three Tertiary deposits in the Polk Springs study area (fig. 1 and table 1). These resources are exposed between tuff-breccia and lava flows of the Pliocene Tuscan Formation and Paleozoic or Mesozoic metamorphic rocks which suggests that although no deposits were identified in the other RARE II areas, they may be concealed beneath the Tuscan Formation. Difficulty in choosing drilling targets will make the likelihood of resource discoveries small. The development and production of these deposits would also be prohibitive under current economic conditions due to the thick covering of volcanic rocks. Recent stream gravels of Deer Creek in the Polk Springs study area contain enough gold to attract gold hobbyists; however, the stream gravels do not have sufficient volume to be considered a resource. Potential exists for additional auriferous gravels near the Occidental Mine in the Polk Springs RARE II area.

A preliminary survey was performed to investigate the impregnation of relatively weak, porous volcanic tuff and a relatively strong, dense sandstone with five different monomers. Increases in compressive strengths by factors of 2 to 5, and elastic moduli by factors of 2 to 3.5, are reported for natural rocks (tuff., sandstone, dacite), which were impregnated with five monomers (methyl methacrylate; chlorostyrene; 40 percent TMPTMA-60 percent styrene; 40 percent TMPTMA-60 percent chlorostyrene; 60 percent polyester-40 percent styrene); polymerization took place after monomers were forced into the rock. Impregnation was performed (1) by pressurizing rock specimens from one end, or (2) by a vacuum-soak operation. Polymerization was accomplished by either radiation or chemical initiation techniques. Strength improvement is dependent on (1) the type of monomer used, (2) the amount of polymer incorporated into the rock, and (3) the degree of water saturation of the rock. Water saturation strongly reduced the effectiveness of the method for the polymer systems tested. The more viscous monomers (for example, 60 percent polyester-40 percent styrene) were more effective in displacing the water from the rock, and compressive strengths of wet rock were doubled with these systems. Water saturations ranging from 25 to 100 percent of maximum saturation gave essentially identical results. Further tests on other types of mine rock; including shale and coal, are planned. Water-compatible polymer systems should be developed, or present systems should be suitably modified. For application to tunnel stabilization, design studies evaluating the improvement in rock strength and its influence on the support system are also recommended.

Control of the dust produced by continuous mining machines in coal mines is conventionally attained by water sprays from fixed nozzles mounted on the frame of the machine behind the cutting head. In the tests conducted under this contract a so-called "wet-head" machine was used, where the spray nozzles were mounted on the rotating head itself, close to the coal-cutting bits. The tests were conducted at the Robena Mine of U.S. Steel Corporation, using Lee-Norse machines. Operating the wet-head machine and a conventional spray machine in turns in the same section, it was found that the wet-head produced approximately 25 percent less respirable dust and 60 percent less total airborne dust than the conventional spray machine. The wet-head also greatly improved the visibility of the cutting bits from the machine operator's position. Several difficulties had to be overcome before any meaningful tests could be conducted, including excessive pressure drops in the piping system and plugging of the nozzles from internal water contamination. The major obstacle, however, was the rotating water seals on the wet-head, which leaked excessively after only a few hours of operation. Only after several changes and plant and laboratory tests was a design found which permitted conducting the underground tests without appreciable water leakage.

"Belt and shaker conveyors, used singly or as combined units, have for many years been an integral part of many coal-mine haulage systems. The belt conveyor has also been used extensively as a main haulage unit in open-pit iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district, particularly on the Mesabi Range. Few underground metal mines, however, either in the ferrous or non-ferrous branches of the mining industry, use the conveyors exclusively or even extensively for underground haulage. At present, only five iron-ore mines in the entire Lake Superior district have belt- or shaker-conveyor installations of any significant size. Of these mines, three are in the Crystal Falls-Iron River district of Michigan on the Menominee Range, one is on the Marquette Range near Ishpeming, Mich., and one is on the Mesabi Range near Keewatin, Minn.Results of the studies of tackless haulage in the Lake Superior district will not permit the establishment of any formula to prove or disprove the advantages of belt or shaker systems at all underground mines. The studies do show that trackless haulage can be used to advantage where the proper conditions exist. Advantages are particularly apparent when development can be planned sufficiently in advance of exploitation to permit installation of belts or shakers as part of the development program and where the systems are extended to include haulage in stopes as well as main entries.During the winter of 1947-48, the Bureau undertook a study of all of the underground ore conveying systems known to be in operation in the Lake Superior district for the purpose of making available to the entire mining industry the technologic data developed in the area. Because conditions that led to the installation of the belt and shaker conveying systems were often a function of the character of the deposit or the method of mining, a brief description of those conditions is included in this report.After a preliminary investigation into the extent to which trackless conveyors were employed in the district, it was found that a detailed study at five bites would result in fair appraisal of that method of haulage in the underground iron-ore mines.Each of the five significant installations is described separately in this report. In one instance, however, company policy does not permit identification of the mine wherein the conveying is done. In that instance the operation is designated as mine ""A"".Unless otherwise specified, all tonnage figures quoted herein are gross.The cooperation of officials of all of the companies operating underground mines in the Lake Superior district permitted successful completion of preliminary studies of mining practices and conveying systems.Special acknowledgment is made to R. Abstract Recent ore pass failures have underlined the need for improved designs, standards, structural mon¬itoring methods and better hang-up prevention and removal tech¬niques. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the Na¬tional Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating methods to improve safety during the transport of ore in ore passes. Design criteria and hang-up prevention and remedia¬tion strategies involve studies of the effects of static and dynamic ore and waste-rock loads on chutes, walls, gates and support structures. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate the response of various ore pass designs to a wide range of ore loading condi¬tions. A full-scale mockup of ac¬tual ore pass and chute assemblies was duplicated and tested for load response. Data from a particle flow code and the mock-ups were com¬pared Loads on an active ore pass chute were measured.

This chapter presents proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs) derived from death certificate data in the National Occupational Mortality Surveillance (NOMS) database for the years 1986 through 1993. At the time this report was prepared, 1993 was the latest year for which data were available. Industry is classified under the 1980 U.S. Bureau of the Census classification system [Bureau of the Census 1982]; cause of death, under the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) [World Health Organization 1977]. A PMR of 100 indicates a mortality risk for a particular industry group that is similar to that for all industry groups combined. A PMR over 100 suggests a higher risk; a PMR under 100 suggests a lower risk. PMRs are subject to many factors that affect their reliability and validity and may not be comparable across populations with very different causes of death. An elevated PMR for a specified cause of death among an occupational or industry group may indicate a relationship between a work exposure and the cause of death specified. However, there are many limitations of PMRs as a measure of risk; they are most useful for generating hypotheses about exposure-disease relationships, which can then be tested in other studies. Selected PMRs are presented separately for males and females for coal mining, metal mining, nonmetallic mineral mining and quarrying (which includes nonmetal, stone, and sand and gravel), and for oil and gas extraction. All PMRs have been adjusted for age and race. In general, PMRs are presented only if the lower 95% confidence limit exceeded 100. If a PMR in an ICD-9 subcategory was above 100, however, the PMR for the larger category into which the subcategory falls is always presented and may be less than 100. PMRs can be expected to be elevated for conditions that have a high prevalence in particular occupational groups. PMRs showed elevated values for conditions known to affect miners, such as coal workers' pneumoconiosis, pneumoconiosis due to silica, tuberculosis, chronic pulmonary heart disease, and injuries. Additional findings of interest were- • An elevated PMR for myocardial infarction among male coal miners (table 2-1); • Elevated PMRs for neurologic disease in general and anterior horn cell disease, in particular among male metal miners (table 2-3); • An elevated PMR for rheumatic heart disease in male metal miners (table 2-3); • Elevated PMRs for malignant neoplasms of the digestive organs and peritoneum and for malignant neoplasms of the colon and rectum in female nonmetal miners (table 2-6); and • Elevated PMRs for non-A, non-B hepatitis and arteriosclerotic heart disease among male oil and gas workers (table 2-7).

Barometric pressure changes affect air density, leading to change in the mass of the gas in the gob. When the barometric pressure decreases, the volume of gas in the gob expands, while the volume of gas contracts when the barometric pressure increases, causing the gob to breathe out and in. Although the concept of gob ?breathing? is simple, its effect on spontaneous heating of coal in the gob area is not clear. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob area under measured barometric pressure changes. A single longwall panel using a bleederless ventilation system was simulated. If there is no barometric pressure change, the intake airflow rate is equal to the return airflow rate. When the barometric pressure changes, these two airflow rates are no longer equal, and the difference between the two airflow rates represents the airflow rate the gob breathes in and out. The effect of inflow and outflow of gas on the potential spontaneous heating in the gob was investigated using the CFD model developed in our previous study. The effect of barometric pressure changes on the spontaneous heating was found to be dependent on the gob permeability and the coal oxidation rate. The effect of barometric pressure changes on oxygen concentrations in the gob was also examined.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1992 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. However, the continent's total output for a number of major mineral commodities declined relative to the volume produced during 1991. (See tables 1 and 2.) The most conspicuous declines in mineral production from 1991 to 1992 were for cobalt and copper (declines of 28.6 % and 23.4 %, respectively), which could be partially attributed to mining and metal processing difficulties caused by political and economic disruptions in Zaire and for uranium (12 % drop), for which much of the continental production decline was ascribed to Namibian cutbacks in response to lower world prices. The severe regional drought also adversely affected the mineral industry in a number of sub-Saharan nations.

Instrumental analysis is an indispensable tool to many phases of research on rare-earth metals and their compounds; therefore, the development of new and improved instrumental techniques is essential. This report describes an emission spectrometric analytical method using direct-current carbon-arc excitation of various rare-earth-oxide mixtures. Lanthanum oxide serves the dual purpose of an internal standard and a constant major constituent. The versatility of the method was demonstrated by three different applications: (a) Analysis of complex rare-earth concentrates; (b) determination of impurities in high-purity rare-earth oxides; and (c) detection of rare-earth elements in other types of matrices, such as those resulting from beneficiation of rare-earth ores. The average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.2 to 10.0 percent was 14.6 percent for a group of complex synthetic mixtures of rare-earth oxides. An average error of analysis in the concentration range of 0.05 to 0.50 percent was 21 percent for a group of high-purity rare-earth oxides.

[The discovery in 1934 that carbonaceous materials, such as coal, peat, and lignite, when treated with concentrated sulfuric acid, were given cation or bate-exchange properties opened up a field of new materials with many interesting possibilities. These hydrogen exchangers, as they were called, were so superior to the impractical hydrogen exchangers made from natural and synthetic zeolites tat they were accepted immediately by the water-conditioning industry. A noteworthy advantage of the carbonaceous exchangers is that they are nonsiliceous, hence they do not give up silica to the water as do the natural and synthetic zeolites, especially if the hard water is corrosive. For this reason the new exchangers found immediate favor in boiler-feed-water conditioning.]

This report describes the feasibility of mining the oil shale deposits of the Piceance Creek basin in Colorado by an integrated open pit system. The study is based upon a comprehensive analysis of pertinent environmental, economic, and engineering factors. Ten mining cases are investigated, and the mine design and cost estimates for each case are presented in this report. Nine of the cases represent three cutoff grades, defining oil shale ore as equal to and above 15 gallons per ton (gpt), 20 gpt, and 25 gpt at three ore production levels of 500,000 tons per day (TPD), 1,250,000 TPD, and 2,500,000 TPD. The tenth case is an alternate design of the 500,000 TPD production rate at the above 15 gpt cutoff grade. The report consists of Volume I, a technical and cost comparison of the ten cases; Volume II-Part I, a detailed explanation of the estimating methods used; and Volume II-Part 2, a more detailed discussion of the technical and cost features of the ten cases than is presented in Volume I.

This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe's body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe's power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

Uranium in situ leach mining has recently emerged as a viable alternative to conventional miring techniques. The cost implications of in situ mining are therefore of increasing interest to mining paracticioners as well as public officials. This report presents the results of an assessment of uranium in situ leach mining costs through the application of process engineering and discounted cash flow analysis procedures. A computerized wasting technique, termed a cost model, was developed through this effort to facilitate rapid cost analyses. Application of this cost model will generate mine life capital and operating costs as well as solve for economic production cost/lb. U308. Conversely rate of return may be determined subject to a known selling price. The data bases of the cost made! have been designed to reflect variations in Texas vs. Wyoming site applications. The results If applying the model under numerous ore deposit, operating, wellfield and extraction plant conditions for Texas and Wyoming are summarized in the report. Sensitivity analysis of changes in key project parameters have also been tested and reported.

Because of continuing concerns regarding the effects of cumulative quantities of materials in the environment, the Bureau of Mines has initiated a series of studies to evaluate, to the fullest extent possible, all aspects of the materials flow sequence fur selected commodities. Although tungsten and its compounds do not pose a significant health hazard to the environment, they do represent valuable resource materials to which appropriate conservation considerations must be given. The present study includes a description of recent trends in the consumption, loss, and recycling of tungsten-containing materials in the United States during the period 1974 to 1991 and an estimation of the cumulative loss of tungsten to the environment since 1910. Obsolete tungsten is recycled primarily as cemented tungsten carbide components that have been used in cutting and wear-resistant applications. The quantity recycled, as a of annual U.S. consumption of tungsten, was estimated to have increased from 10% in 1974 to 341a in 1991. An estimated 58% of the 148,000 metric tons of primary tungsten consumed since 1910 was lost to the environment through means such as dissipation, discard, and dilution.

Proper illumination is critical to a miner?s ability to detect hazards in underground mines. Moving hazards are often located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view, while slip/trip/ fall hazards are often located in the forward field-of-view. The objective of the research described in this paper was to determine if light-emitting diodes (LEDs) improve visual performance as compared to traditional incandescent (INC) cap lamps. The research presented focuses on comparative studies of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) prototype LED, a commercial LED and an INC camp lamp. Thirty subjects participated in these studies, with ten subjects in each of the following age groups: 18 to 25 years, 40 to 50 years and 51+ years old. Visual per­formance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy in detecting hazards, while visual performance for disability glare was quantified by the use of contrast sensitivity tests. Results suggest that LEDs with a visible spectrum containing a higher concentration of the shorter wavelengths can enable visual performance improvements with respect to disability glare, the detection of moving hazards in the peripheral field-of-view and the detection of floor hazards in the forward field-of-view. The NIOSH prototype LED cap lamp provided the best visual performance improvements for the older age groups in every test.

This document reports on the design details of the sensor packages and the data processing program used in an experimental monitoring system. The results of special ventilation monitoring experiments and several sub-system considerations are also described.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey, explored the Crowell fluorite mine by core drilling in 1945. Claims investigated are in sec. 14, T. 12 S. R. 47 E., M. D. B. & M., in southern rye County, Nev., about 5 miles east of 'Beatty.The twelve holes drilled by the Bureau totaled 3,661 feet. During 1945 the mine operator drove extensive exploration drifts, in part to verify results of the Bureau's work. The drilling program was designed to test for extensions of ore bodies known in the mine.The Crowell mine has shipped Ore to steel plants on the west coast for the past 20 years. During the war this market called for all the fluorite the mine could produce, but previously there were periods when it was difficult to sell ore or concentrates.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Toxic fumes generated during shot firing under actual mining conditions were measured. Eight shots with Gelodyn-2X and seven shots with Tovex-100 4VT were monitored. Average CO values for Gelodyn-2X and Tovex-100 4VT were 0.20 ft3/lb and 0.09 ft3/lb, respectively. Average N0x values for Gelodyn-2X and Tovex-100 4VT were 0.049 ft3/lb and 0.026 ft3/lb, respectively. The results obtained with these in-mine tests will be used by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the development of a large chamber method of measuring fumes from shotfiring of explosives.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has obtained data by differential thermal analysis of the various minerals that represent the nation's resources in manganese. These data are supported by X-ray diffraction analysis, chemical analysis, mineralography, and optical mineralogy, and provide fundamental information on the response of each mineral to thermal treatment in oxidizing, reducing, and neutral atmospheres. The information can be applied advantage¬ously in the identification of manganese minerals. Its greatest potential value, however, lies in the application of the quantitative data on the reaction temperatures, rates, and products to the more efficient extraction of manganese from U.S. ores. Thermal analysis curves are presented for certain manganese minerals, namely hausmannite, bixbyite, braunite, pyrolusite, lithiophorite, cryptomelane, hollandite, manganite, rhodochrosite, and rhodonite. The original minerals and the products of their thermal decomposition were identified by X-ray diffraction analysis, supplemented by chemical analysis and mineralogical identification.
