"Introduction.Sixty years ago, M. Berthelot found that ethylene could be selectively absorbed from gaseous mixtures by concentrated sulphuric acid, and that the compound formed by the chemical union of the gas and acid was readily decomposed by heating with water, yielding ethyl alcohol. Only within the last few years has there been any attempt to make use of this discovery technically.Bury*, working in England at the Skinningrove Iron Works and on a commercial scale, developed a technical method for converting, the ethylene of coke-oven as into alcohol. With a gas containing less than 3 per cent of ethylene, he obtained a yield of 1.6 gallons of alcohol per ton of coal carbonized.De Loisy** perfected a technical method for treatment of coke-oven as for alcohol. Evidently this work was carried out on a semi-commercial scale. His method is based on the use of catalytic agents for hastening the absorption of ethylene by sulphuric acid. He uses part of the spent acid for drying the gases and pact for the manufacture of ammonium sulphate. Excess acid is reconcentrated by waste heat. Others have worked on the problem, but so far there has been no large recovery of ethylene from coke-oven gases. The chief difficulty seems to lie in the low efficiency (about 50% of methods and tae relatively low concentrations of ethylene in the gases treated. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated acoustic emission (AE) and the Kaiser effect in six types of rock: St. Cloud gray granodiorite, Barre granite, Dresser basalt, Salem limestone, Berea sandstone, and a volcanic tuff. AE signatures were used for interpreting the rock deformation stage and for indicating mechanisms of failure in uniaxial compression. The research demonstrated the advantages of using the volumetric stress-strain curve, as opposed to the more conventional uniaxial curve, for correlating AE response signatures with deformation stages and fracture processes in the rock. Standardized experimental procedures were used for the AE monitoring. The Kaiser effect was shown to be capable of determining prestress levels to within a few percentage points in uniaxial compression tests. Also, prestress memory was shown to be retained in the rock for periods of up to at least. 5 months, the maximum period of testing. The Kaiser effect AE technology holds promise for providing a comparatively inexpensive and less complex method for examihing stress history in rock. However, since the conftning stress has a pronounced influence on the Kaiser effect, it must be considered in developing technology for determining peak fteld stresses based on the Kaiser effect.

Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources and potential of deposits in the Bucks Lake and Chips Creek RARE II areas in Plumas and Butte Counties, California. These areas lie along the west slope of the Sierra Nevada on opposite sides of the North Fork Feather River and encompass an area of 62,800 acres (25,400 ha). Metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Pennsylvanian Calaveras Formation are intruded by plutons of Mesozoic age. Mineral; of economic iterest are in quartz veins in metasediments close to these plutons; they are principally gold and silver with minor amounts of copper, lead, and zinc minerals. Molybdenum, copper, silver, and tungsten minerals occur in tactite along metasedimentary-granitic rock contacts. In both areas, auriferous Tertiary channel gravels have been extensively developed. Asbestos occurs in ultramafic rocks in both areas, and a limestone deposit was explored in the Chips Creek area. Gold is the principal economic mineral in the Bucks Lake RARE II area. The Shenandoah Mine (fig. 1, no. 19) contains 7,500 tons (6,800 t) of indicated and inferred subeconomic gold resources in sulfide-bearing, silicified metamorphic rocks of the Calaveras Formation (table 1). Similar rocks have yielded gold at the Edman and Megowen Mines, adjacent to the area. A high potential exists for additional lode resources in the area around the Shenandoah Mine. Callahan Mining Corporation personnel believe a multi-million ton disseminated gold deposit underlies the property.

Surface subsidence is an inevitable consequence of many underground mining operations and has been recognized as such since the fifteenth century. Damage resulting from this phenomenon ranges from simple land settlement to severe structural damage to buildings and has been witnessed in rural (Illinois, Colorado, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania) as well as in urban areas (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Wyoming). In fact, it is estimated that over 2 million acres of land across the United States have been affected by mining subsidence, of which 140,000 acres are in urban areas (Singh, 1978; Johnson and Miller, 1979). Further, it is estimated that during the next twenty years an additional 1.5 to 2.4 million acres of land will also be affected by mining. Subsidence prevention is not feasible, at least under the existing technologic and economic constraints of underground coal mining. Foreign experience has demonstrated, however, that subsidence can be successfully controlled if an accurate method of predicting ground movements is available. Such techniques have been developed in many coalfields, where it is currently accepted that subsidence can be predicted within ± 20 percent of the actual values. Furthermore, such movements can be translated into anticipated structural failures using established damage criteria, thus enabling appropriate precautionary measures to be implemented.

Reconnaissance studies of beach sands along the eastern part of the Gulf of Alaska were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine if any of these coastal areas warranted investigations as possible sources of valuable minerals. Because of difficult access and limited transportation facilities only a minimum of sampling, surveying, and camping equipment is utilized to obtain spot samples from key areas as well as information indicating the location, size, and character of the deposits. Such data were obtained from beaches located along approximately 247 miles of the Gulf of Alaska coastline during parts of the 1957 and 1958 field seasons. A total of 201 3-inch-diameter auger holes, spaced roughly at 1 mile intervals, were bored by hand methods to depths ranging from 3 feet to 27 feet; also 33 shovel samples were collected from selected localities. Samples were reduced to a rough concentrate in the field by panning; the rough concentrates were shipped to the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Juneau for further concentration and for petrographic and chemical analyses. Particular attention was given to the heavy-mineral content of the concentrates, although the types and relative amounts of rock-forming minerals were also determined. The reconnaissance indicated that, generally, the valuable mineral content of the beach deposits was too low to be of further interest except in the vicinity of Yakutat and Lituya Bays where erratic but possibly significant concentrations of magnetite and/or ilmenite were found. At Yakutat, about 20 miles of beachline extending southeasterly from Ocean Cape, yielded samplas containing from 1 pound to over 300 pounds of iron and from a trace to over 100 pounds of titanium dioxide (TiO2) per cubic yard of beach material. However, the higher grade samples represented local concentrations of minor importance. The general tenor of the Yakutat beach, as indicated by the airthmetical average of 27 auger-hole samples, is about 35 pounds of iron and 20.5 pounds of titanium dioxide per cubic yard of beach material. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated mines, prospects, and mineralized areas in the South Providence Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in 1982. No mines are currently operating in the WSA, however, the Golden Gift Mine in the southeastern part of the WSA produced $6,800 1/ worth of gold and silver and five mines adjacent to the east boundary of the WSA had a total production of about $3,500,000 1/ in gold, silver, lead, and copper. There is no recorded placer gold production. Over 350 lode and placer mining claims are in and immediately adjacent to the WSA. Of these, 74 were actively held (1982) and at least one area, which is partly within the northeast portion of the WSA, was being actively explored by private industry in 1982. Adjacent to the southeastern border of the WSA the Big Horn Mine contains an estimated 200,000 tons of indicated and inferred marginal reserves averaging 0.25 oz/ton gold; and the Hidden Hill Mine has 550 tons of subeconomic resources averaging 0.60 oz/ton gold. An additional 11,000 tons of marginally economic gold-bearing dump reserves average 0.17 oz/ton gold at the Bighorn, Hidden Hill, and the Buena Vista Mines and the Midas Touch Prospect. Sample analyses indicate eight mines and prospects in, and five adjacent to the WSA may have additional gold-silver-lead-copper vein-type resources. Five of these prospect areas may have a disseminated gold resource and one may have gold resources in a skarn. One prospect may have a porphyry-type copper-molybdenum resource. Although gold placer claims were filed sporadically throughout the WSA, none appears to have placer gold resources. Likelihood for mining is greatest at the Big Horn Mine; if a mill is built there, it could process Big Horn Mine ore, ore from the Hidden Hill Mine, and gold-bearing dumps at the Big Horn, Hidden Hill, and Buena Vista Mines and the Midas Touch Prospect. All of these resources are adjacent to the WSA; however, their development would increase likelihood for development of resources in the WSA. Two major fault zones (the Hidden Hill, and the Big Horn) appear to have controlled the mineralization at many of the prospects and mines. All of the prospects or mines with vein-type occurrences and resources are on or adjacent to one of these fault zones. Veins throughout the eastern half of the WSA contain various amounts of gold, silver, and copper; only veins near the Big Horn Mine and in the northeastern corner of the WSA contain lead. Some veins are as thick as 6 ft, are traceable intermittently for over 2 mi along strike, are sporadically mineralized, are encased in prophylitic, argillic, and phyllic altered host rock, contain pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, specularite, barite, or fluorite, and display multiple stages of quartz veining and (or) brecciation. Sample analyses at five prospects (map nos. 3, 18, 23, 24, and 31) indicate they may have disseminated gold resources. To date no oil or gas has been discovered within the WSA. However, some oil and gas leases are currently (August 1982) held within this study area.

The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of the cab design and to determine the percentage of musculoskeletal symptoms among workers. A questionnaire was designed to assess demographics, work information, job history, and musculoskeletal symptoms in operators of heavy construction equipment. Information concerning equipment included design of the seat/chair, levers, pedals, bothersome vibration, quality of egress from the equipment, proper preventative maintenance and repairs, and age of the equipment. The body regions that were evaluated included the neck, middle/upper back, low-back, shoulder/upper-arm, elbow/forearm, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot. One hundred and eighty nine operators completed the questionnaire. The results indicate that these workers are at risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders, the need to perform a larger survey to further substantiate the outcome, and the need to quantify risk factors (i.e., whole-body vibration and static sitting postures).

The Goat Rocks RARE II further planning areas contain no known mineral resources and have very low mineral potentials. County mining records show only one mining claim area; however, no mineralized material was found at the described location. Andesite suitable for building stone may be present, but similar material can be quarried more economically elsewhere. Several anthracite coal prospects are near the area, but the likelihood of finding an economic deposit of coal or other fuel is very low.

As the problem of inclusions in steel has become increasingly important, more and more attention has been paid to the source of the oxide inclusions in steel. In killed steels the oxide inclusions are traceable to the reaction of deoxidizers with the iron oxide dissolved in the steel during the refining period of the open-hearth heat. In a large class of steel known as "rimming steel" the action of the steel during solidification depends entirely on the gas evolved, and this evolution in turn is controlled by the amount of iron oxide in the liquid steel in the mold. It is therefore of great importance to be able to determine the amount of iron oxide dissolved in steel and to devise methods for the control of iron oxide in any class of steel. The object of the present investigation was to obtain a true value of the oxygen content of liquid steel. If the steel has not been deoxidized, the greater percentage of the oxygen is present as iron oxide in solution.

This study by the Bureau of Mines documents the leadtime required for preliminary and detailed exploration, development of the mine, and construction of beneficiation and support facilities for selected copper deposits in Arizona. The time for major exploration ranged from 1 to 15 years, time for open pit development (or construction) was 1 to 4 years, and time for under- ground development was 4 to 8 years; one underground mine presently being developed may require 12 years to achieve production. Construction of the beneficiation plants required 8 months to just over 2 years. The data are supported by historical facts for each deposit during the leadtime stages from location of claims through exploration, construction, expansion, and leaching. The sequence of development and factors contributing to differences in the time spans are discussed. Histories are detailed for the Miami, Castle Dome, Copper Cities, San Manuel-Kalamazoo, and Twin Buttes properties; briefly summarized are the Pinto Valley, Miami East, Esperanza-Sierrita, Pima, and Mineral Park Properties. Each mining operation had its own pattern of development, and together they present a source of planning information for the development of other properties.

There are no producing or developing mines in the study area. The only mineral production was stone from a basalt deposit near Indian View Point. Cinders and sand and gravel have been produced from deposits within 1/2 mi (0.8 km) of the boundary. Stone, sand and gravel, and cinder deposits inside the area are not considered resources because equal or better quality material is found closer to markets. The study area has no known oil and gas, coal, geothermal, or other energy related deposits. However, in 1982 application was filed on 25,000 acres (10,125 ha) of petroleum and on 15,000 acres; (6,0/5 ha) of geothermal leases.

This paper has peen translated from the Russian by the United States Bureau of Mines and is issued as one of a series of circulars dealing with mining methods and costs in connection with a general study of this subject sponsored by the bureau. The paper presents some interesting features in connection with the methods employed in Russia and describes certain variations in standard methods which might conceivably be applied to a limited extent in this country.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Information organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral- material production or consumption.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH/PRL) conducted a series of large-scale experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of optical flame detectors, photoelectric smoke detectors, and combined ionization and photo­electric smoke detectors for rapidly detecting mining equipment cab fires. The detec­tor alarm times were then used to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to suppress cab material fires. This paper discusses the types of fire detectors tested, the experiments that Were conducted, and the results that were obtained. Con-" elusions are that rapid detection of equipment cab fires can be achieved to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to protect the operator in the cab.

Ecuador a gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8% despite a slowdown in production and sales of petroleum, the dominant economic sector. Crude petroleum exports, which amounted to about 35% of total exports in 1977, were valued et $484 million,2 a decrease of 14% from 1976 values. Petroleum export sales were depressed because foreign buyers were somewhat uncertain that State-owned Corporación Estatal Petrólera Ecuatoriana (CEPE) held legal title to the oil until final settlement with Ecuadorian Gulf Oil Corp. In addition to the legal complication, Ecuador maintained a relatively high export price for oil until late in the year. There was also a shrinkage of traditional U.S, markets owing to the Alaskan pipeline becoming operational and an increased availability of Mexican supplies. The export market was also affected by increased domestic production in Peru and Chile, which lessened their import needs, and the pressure of greater competition from the Middle East in supplying crude oil to Caribbean refineries. About 20.4 million barrels or 40% of Ecuador's total crude exports went to the United States. Only 27 wells were drilled in Ecuador during L977; of these, 16 produced oil, 3 were dry holes, and 8 were suspended. About 31 wells were planned for 1978. Three new oilfields were discovered during 1977; two by CEPE in northeastern Ecuador and one by the Argentine State oil company Yacimientos Petraliferos Fiscales (YPF), operating in Ecuador under a service contract.
