In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unprecedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by a herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 460,000 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country’s oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the beginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million barrels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but produced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation’s petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil – coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. Since World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum products has become the order of the day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has increased enough to meet domestic requirements by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects – one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the overall daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 60 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields – having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each – must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly, or perhaps more rapidly, than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each were discovered and proved – an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year’s supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the number of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. Tungsten, silver, lead, zinc, and placer gold occur in the Cucamonga B RARE II area (no. B5174). A strata-bound, scheelite-bearing zone at the Blue Diamond prospect (fig. 1, no. 1) contains an estimated 16,000 tons (15,000 t) of identified, subeconomic resources averaging 0.16 percent tungsten trioxide (W03). There is a high potential for discovering additional tungsten resources at this property. The California-Hercules prospect (fig. 1, no. 5) ha; a mineral occurrence which contains an estimated 1,000 tons (900 t) of tactite averaging 1.3 oz silver per ton (45 g/t), 0.75 percent lead, and 0.72 percent zinc. Another occurrence, at the Blew Jordam Prospect (fig. 1, no. 4) has an estimated 100 tons (90 t) of tactite averaging 10 oz silver per ton (340 ,/t), 3.75 percent zinc, and 2.3 percent lead. There is a moderate potential for discovering silver, lead, and zinc resources at these prospects, which are in metamorphic pendants. There are a few lode gold prospects in the area (fig. 1, nos. 3, 11, 14) are on geologic structures which parallel the San Andreas Fault, northeast of the area. These deposits are not well exposed and have been historically unproductive. Placer gold in area B occurs locally in the beds of intermittent tributaries to Lytle Creek (fig. 1, nos. 10, 12, 13) in concentrations as high as $1.17 per cu yd ($1.53/cu m, at a gold price of $450 per troy oz). The deposits have no significant volume, but could be utilized for recreational panning and suction dredging. In the Cucamonga C RARE II area (No. C5174) placer gold occurrences locally contain as much as $1.23 per cu yd ($1.61/cu m). However, gravel containing the gold appears to be limited to stream beds, and does not occur in sufficient quantity to constitute resources. Recreational panning and dredging also may occur in this area.

This report describes the results of a research project carried out to investigate the feasibility of using transducer arrays, located on surface or in shallow boreholes, above an active coal mine to detect and locate the source of underground microseismic activity which normally occurs during mining. The initial stage of the project involves the design and development of a self-contained mobile microseismic monitoring facility capable of use in remote field locations. Following this a variety of transducers, and transducer field installation techniques were investigated to obtain optimum sensitivity and high signal-to-noise characteristics. Preliminary efforts were also undertaken to develop semi-automated techniques for analysis of microseismic field data. Using the facilities and techniques developed field studies were carried out at a number of surface locations over a central Pennsylvania coal mine operating at depths of the order of 500 feet. In particular studies were con-ducted over a previously mined development area, troubled by extensive problems of roof instability, and over two longwall panels during mining. Although many of the field studies were carried out during the development stage of the project, results in general have been most encouraging. Limited results were obtained over the development area, however excellent microseismic signals, correlating with underground strata instability, were detected over both long-wall areas, proving the general feasibility of surface monitoring techniques. More recent studies, carried out as part of a subsequent project, and utilizing modified geophone installation techniques at a third longwall site, have verified explicitly the feasibility of measuring underground microseismic activity from surface locations. Sections of typical field data are included in this report along with a brief review of the studies carried out at each of the field sites. Detailed analysis of data obtained at the second and third longwall test sites will be presented in a later report.

The use of continuous mining machines has greatly minimized the necessity for blasting in coal mines, even during pillar recovery; however, explosives are still used to blast stumps. The use of improper blasting materials, improper procedures, or both has caused mine explosions and fires, with loss of life and property damage. Researchers and manufacturers are continuously improving explosives and blasting accessories; use of the more recently developed materials will make the blasting operation safer. Extreme caution is mandatory when blasting stumps, as the ignition of methane or coal dust may trigger an explosion or cause a fire. Since the blasting of stumps will no doubt continue, although often unnecessarily, this paper summarizes recent findings published by the Bureau of Mines and recommends safer methods.

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for beneficiating platinum-palladium ores from the Stillwater Complex, Montana. Results of bench-scale and pilot-scale studies employing froth flotation to recover sulfide concentrates containing platinum-palladium values from a serpentinized ore are presented. Best results in the pilot mill were obtained with a sodium isobutyl xanthate-normal dodecyl mercaptan col-lector combination at a natural pH of 8.2. A rougher concentrate con-taining 1.7 oz/ton Pt and 4.7 oz/ton Pd was prepared. Recoveries of platinum and palladium were 96 pet and 86 pet, respectively. Batch cleaner flotation of rougher concentrates yielded concentrates contain-ing 3.7 oz/ton Pt and 9.8 oz/ton Pd.

With the ever-increasing demand for energy in all forms, electrical energy generated from geothermal resources could become an important energy source in the next few decades. Geothermal fluids, which contain appreciable quantities of dissolved salts and gases, are generally corrosive to materials of construction. Since data on corrosion of materials in geothermal brines is limited, the literature was surveyed through February 1972 to obtain a compilation of information on corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys, copper and copper-base alloys, carbon steel and cast iron, stainless steels, chromium-iron alloys, nickel-and cobalt-base alloys, and titanium in heated brines including sea water.

A mobile vacuum sweeper to remove loose coal and coal dust from underground coal mine workings was designed, built, tested, and evaluated. The design was based on an extensive test program. Pick up and conveying rates vs. air volumes, velocities, and nozzle shapes were determined for coal rubble in a laboratory pneumatic handling system. A gas/solids separation system was developed and tested in the laboratory capable of separating the solids loading from the vacuum system air stream to the very high degree required to preclude degradation of the ambient (mine) air. Two designs were made, one for belt conveyor and one for general district cleanup. The belt cleanup machine was chosen for test and demonstrated in an underground coal mine performing cleanup work in belt haulageways and on ribs.

A survey of electromagnetic noise reports was performed and a summary of the results are given. Industrial concerns were surveyed for techniques to minimize the effects of electromagnetic noise and are presented. The common types of communication links used in mines today are presented. A mathematical development was presented which determines the probability of bit errors versus distance for various types of communication links designed for in mine use. The probability of undetected errors for the protocols of the communication links is given together with burst error detection.

The research objective was to determine the effect of vanadium alloy additions on the oxidation behavior of cobalt-nickel Alloys. Eighteen alloys were reacted with 0 2 at 0.5 arm and 1,351°, 1,389°, and 1,429° K. The alloy compositions consisted of Co-Ni master alloys (0, 22, 50, 70, 91, and 100 wt pct Ni) with V additions of 0, 0.9, and 2.7 wt pct. Large early deviations from, or changes in, the parabolic rate constant were encountered, but the reaction rate in most cases declined approximately in accordance with the parabolic rate law. Relatively, the vanadium degraded the oxidation resistance most at the highest nickel contents. In some cases, melting of the oxide was inferred from microscopic evidence and X-ray diffraction measurements disclosed the presence of low-melting vanadates.

In 1990, the Bureau of Mines (BOM) conducted a mineral investigation of the mines and prospects in the East Mojave National Scenic Area (EMNSA), San Bernardino County, California During field work, BOM identified 701 mines and prospects in EMNSA for which the geology, mineral resources, and mining history were compiled and summarized. Analytical results for 1,188 rock samples collected are tabulated. Total value of identified resources in EMNSA is $5.0 billion. Twenty-four mines and prospects were deemed profitable under current economic conditions. Development could generate considerable economic benefits to San Bernardino County. Potential economic benefits from mining the deposits were evaluated under the following access restrictions for EMNSA: 1) full access, 2) HR 3460, and 3) S 11/HR 780. Under the full access scenario, cumulative mine revenues are $3.0 billion, cumulative personal earnings at mines and supporting industries are $0.94 billion, and annual jobs at mines and supporting industries are 2,379. Under HR 3460, mine revenues, personal earnings, and annual jobs are $2.9 billion, $0.88 billion, and 2,165, respectively. Under S 11/HR 780, mine revenues, personal earnings, and annual jobs are $1.0 billion, $0.32 billion, and 936, respectively.

The importance of producing more oil from known petroleum reserves has placed increased emphasis on the application of secondary-recovery methods. Recently published reports3 4/ describe the results of waterflooding in Roane and Pleasants Counties, W. Va. (see fig. 1.) This report describes the Barron Kidd Oil Co.?s Santee waterflood project, Maxton sand, Burton field, Church district, Wetzel County, W. Va. (See fig. 2.) The Federal Bureau of Mines hopes that these reports will stimulate interest in improved waterflooding techniques, thereby discouraging premature abandonment of oil leases.

An investigation of the quenching behavior of coal dust-air flames was carried out. The literature relevant to coal dust-air flames was reviewed, including information on the agglomeration, sedimentation, and dispersal of dust clouds. The simple equations relating the various concentrations involved in dust flame propagation are given and their implications elaborated. It is shown that the concentration seen by a moving flame in a sedimenting dust cloud can differ significantly from the concentration commonly measured in such experiments. The known dust cloud phenomena which appeared significant in flame propagation studies were experimentally evaluated, and quenching diameters, flame speeds, and lean propagation limits for several tube diameters measured. For Pittsburgh seam coal, the Minimum Quenching Diameter (MQD) for dust between 10 and 20 µm was found to be between 0.7 and 0.8 cm, and the lean propagation for 3.2-cm tubes to be approximately 200 mg/liter. Similar MQD data were also obtained for Pocahontas and Sewell coals, Beulah lignite, and a 50-gal./ton oil shale. The effect of temperature, coal particle size, and propagation tube material were also investigated.

[During the past year the Metallurgical Fundamentals Section gave about an equal amount of time to the experimental determination of fundamental thermodynamic constants and to the demonstration of the application of such data to more directly practical metallurgical problems. The first division of the work - the actual experimental measurements of typical thermodynamic constants - was carried out an two problems, termed ?continuing? programs, namely, (1) measurements of Specific Heats at Low Temperatures and (2) Measurements of Heats of Formation and Free Energies. Specific substances chosen for investigation are classified as (n) those that have been the subject of requests for information from the industry and that, upon examination, seem of sufficient practical importance to justify study, and (b) compounds that are difficult to treat metallurgically, or whose specific thermodynamic properties have not yet been determined satisfactorily and for which accurate data might suggest improved or new methods of Metallurgical treatment, or (c) materials recognized as belonging to a social class with exceptional thermodynamic properties and, hence, of scientific as well as technical importance.]

The smelting of lead ores has been carried out in southeast Missouri for centuries, and modern smelting practices have generated a variety of waste products. Lead blast furnace slag is one such product, which typically contains 10% zinc, 25% iron and 2% lead. This slag has often been stockpiled on the producing smelter site and accumulations have now reached several million tonnes. It is possible that in the near future these slags will be classified by the federal Environmental Protection Agency as hazardous, and therefore there is considerable interest in possible treatment processes to render the slags non-hazardous by removing the offending metallic elements. To ensure that the overall slag processing costs are kept to a minimum, it is imperative that lead and zinc be recovered in a form suitable for sale or further processing. There are two generic routes for processing blast furnace slags and they involve hydro-metallurgical or pyrometallurgical techniques. With hydrometallurgy, the slags would be leached directly and the metal values recovered from purified leach solution(s) by electrowinning. One problem with processes of this type is that the zinc and lead grades of the slags are low and the iron content is high, and thus the economics of metal production are often not favorable. For pyrometallurgical processing (1), it has been shown that the slags can be fumed to produce an oxide dust containing all the lead and zinc, and representing only a fraction of the weight of the initial slag. The oxide dust may then be processed hydrometallurgical to recover zinc and lead.

Zinc smelting is frequently termed a backward art. The term is hardly true, for great progress has been made in recent years in the design and in the thermal efficiency of the retort furnace, in the quality of retorts, in the recovery of zinc, and in the ability to treat more impure and complex ores. The fact remains, however, that the peculiar physical and chemical properties of zinc have delayed such immense advances-large smelting units, high recovery, low-unit costs, and ability to treat low-grade ores-as have been made in the metallurgy of lead and copper. In current retort-smelting practice, the ores, if carbonates, are calcined to remove carbon dioxide; or, if sulphides, are roasted to remove sulphur. The sulphur must be eliminated as completely as possible, usually to less than 1 per cent. This means that the roast must be continued for a long time at a high temperature, with resulting high cost and small capacity per furnace. The roasted ore is mixed with about 50 per cent of its weight of reducer, which may be fine coke, anthracite, or nonbituminous coal. This mixture is charged into horizontal fire-clay retorts. The retorts used in this country are about 8 inches in internal diameter by 4 feet in length and hold 50 or 60 pounds of ore. The diameter of the retort is limited by the time required for the heat to penetrate to the center of the charge; the length by the strength of the retort, which at the high temperature employed can not support the weight of the charge if the span is more than about 50 inches. The retorts are heated externally by coal, natural gas, or producer gas to a temperature of 1,200° C. or more. The zinc oxide is reduced to zinc, which is volatile at this temperature, and passes into a conical fire-clay condenser attached to one end of the retort, where it condenses to liquid zinc and is removed. Twenty-four hours are required for distillation, and because of the low heat conductivity of the retort walls and of the ore charge itself, the heat efficiency even of the most modern regenerative furnaces is only about 12 per cent. Excessive noise and high vibration are inherently associated with equipment used in the mining, extraction, and processing of mineral resources. High vibration degrades structural components, often leading to catastrophic failure and loss of productivity, and excessive noise can result in permanent hearing loss. In order to foster efficient utilization of the Nation's mineral resources and minimize occupational hazards associated with mineral processing, the Bureau of Mines investigated the relationship between the microstructures of carbon and alloy steels and cast irons and their damping capacities (ability to absorb vibration). Researchers measured damping capacity and other properties and investigated the effects of carburizing, spheroidizing, and annealing. The investigators found that in carbon and alloy steels, rounded colonies of fine-grained pearlite in a ferrite matrix correlate well with low damping capacity. Steel microstructures that exhibit sharp-faceted pearlite in ferrite matrix and partially or fully spheroidized cementite in ferrite show considerably higher damping. In cast irons, the lowest damping capacity is associated with nodular graphite microstructure, and the specific damping capacity (SDC) increases as the graphite micro-structure progresses from nodular to compacted to flake. Predominant ferrite in cast irons is also associated with good damping. SDC data are presented for selected carbon and alloy steels and cast irons.

The purpose of this investigation was to assess the environmental impact of the surface mining methods currently used in the steep-sloped areas of Central Appalachia: southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, southwestern Virginia and northeastern Tennessee. Comparisons are made between mountaintop/cross ridge mining, contour strip, augering and an innovative method surface shortwall mining which was attempted at Julian, West Virginia. Included in this final report are a discussion and analysis of current Appalachian production, reserves, and the extent of land affected on a county- by-county basis. Additionally, the seams within the steep sloped region have been assessed according to minimal standards of thickness, surrounding lithology, and areal extent to determine their amenability to surface shortwall mining. These seams have been tabulated with their ash, sulfur, and BTU content on a county-by county basis. Only minimal statements are made concerning quantity because of the narrow set of conditions required by the shortwall method. Other sections deal with the possible technical failings of an operational surface shortwall system based on field studies at shortwall operations, discussions with people experienced with shortwalls and research into ground control problems at sites where short- and longwall operations have been monitored. A final section details proposed additional research directions which the Bureau might take in the future.

A summary of Bureau of Mines research on recycling, reuse, and disposal of mineral-, metal-, and energy-based wastes is presented, accompanied by an extensive bibliography of related publications. The Bureau's waste recycling and disposal program is directed toward the following four main areas of research and development: (1) extraction of mineral, metal, and energy values from urban refuse; (2) upgrading and recycling of automotive and related ferrous and nonferrous scrap; (3) recovery, utilization, and stabilization of mine and mill processing wastes, and (4) recovery and reuse of values from industrial waste products. This publication updates Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8529, which was issued August 1971.
