Virtually zero gas emission smelting is promoted as a means for securing environmental advantages and the general public’s acceptance. Concerns about climate change will increasingly make it more difficult for new primary metals projects to come to fruition unless greenhouse gas emissions are decreased. Assuming a sustainable market for sulphuric acid is not locally available, the next best option is high temperature reaction of strong SO2 with limestone or dolomite. This is followed by CO2 liquefaction and disposal either underground or in the deep ocean. The Voisey’s Bay nickel project is cited as an example where appropriate location of a new smelter close to large dolomite or limestone deposits would lead to a virtually zero gas emission operation. Most of the electrical energy required for producing technically pure oxygen and for liquefying CO2 and transporting it to disposal can be derived from smelting a bulk sulphide concentrate and then reacting SO2 at high temperature. Provided the smelter gases are properly cleaned before sulphur fixation, the sulphated stone should be uncontaminated and environmentally benign and possibly of use in the building and construction industry.

In the fall of 1961, Cominco dis-carded its long-established system of feeding the lead blast furnaces by narrow-gauge tram and V-cars, and installed an elevated monorail bucket system. This system automatically loads buckets of sinter, along with the correct proportion of coke, and delivers them to any of several designated furnaces. Direct labour usage has been reduced by nine men per day; improved coke proportioning has been achieved; and a major safety hazard has been eliminated. THE PURPOSE of this paper is to indicate the working capacity of different types of ropes for various engineering and mining duties. ROPE CONSTRUCTIONS There are approximately one hundred different designs of ropes in use today but, normally, only about ten are necessary for mining and engineering duties. The rest are designed for unusual equipments, or are different ways of combining wires of special shapes. Basically, the various designs of mining ropes consist of round, triangular, and oval strands, constructed with one or several layers of wire over a single wire, or a compound construction of sever.al wires. To suit different installations ropes are made with 3, 4, 5, or more of these types of strands over a central core, the ?co re itself being manufactured from either a fibrous material or a combination of steel wires. Nevertheless, in mining, the demand for 'locked coil rope', wl1ich may be considered as a single strand, is steadily increasing, especially for use on vertical shaft winding engines. So far as the locked coil rope is concerned, many constructions have been developed to suit different requirements, such as - in addition to winding ropes - aerial carrying Topes, shaft guide ropes and haulage ropes.

"THE petroleum industry in Canada has been experiencing considerable difficulty in filling its manpower requirements during the last few years, and because of the rapidly expanding nature of the industry it is concerned about the supply that will be available to fill the needs of the future. As the oil industry is one of the more technically oriented industries, the most acute problem exists primarily in the field of profession-al/technical personnel. This is particularly true in the production and exploration side of the business, because it employs the highest percentage of this type of personnel. Let me illustrate this by giving you some figures reported by the Alberta Bureau of Statistics as of December, 1965 -out of a total of 9,641 male employees engaged in oil producing and geological and geophysical operations in Alberta, 3,021, or 31 per cent, were classified as engineers, geologists, geophysicists, managers and other professional personnel. No figures are available for 1946 to make a direct comparison of the expansion of the industry over the past twenty 466 years, but it is doubtful whether more than 100 professional/technical people were engaged in producing in Alberta at that time"

FOR THE PAST seven years Mr. W. Simpson, Chief Mechanical Inspector for the Nova Scotia Department of Mines, has carried out exhaustive field trials of non-destructive inspection equipment in the coal mines of that Province. This work has demonstrated the usefulness of a number of types of non-destructive inspection when used for periodic inspection of hoisting and haulage equipment in the coal mines of Nova Scotia. As a result, the Dominion Coal Company has instituted a programme of regular preventive maintenance inspection ?by a special staff of qualified and trained men. The purpose of this present paper is to describe how non-destructive testing techniques are used on ropes, axles, couplings, and other hoisting and haulage equipment, how these methods are being used in other industries, and the expected benefits from intelligent and properly organized use of these techniques in the coal mining industry.

Eriez HydroFloat(TM) separators and Canadian Process Technologies (CPT) flotation columns have been developed to overcome the limitations of traditional flotation cells in recovering coarse and fine particles, respectively. The flotation column can effectively separate 30-5 µm phosphate. Several industrial-scale HydroFloat separators have been installed in phosphate and potash beneficiation plants. Industrial-scale ultra-coarse (+850 µm) phosphate separation results suggest that a more-than 40% BonePhosphate- of-Lime (BPL) recovery increase and a 37% collector consumption reduction can be achieved. The paper describes the applications of Eriez HydroFloat separators to coarse particle separation and the CPT flotation column to fine/ultrafine particle flotation.

ABSTRACT: Joseph (2002) introduced passive seismic monitoring to measure mining equipment performance. This paper evaluates the potential of passive seismic monitoring to correlate mining equipment operation with oil sands surface response, with a mining hauler as the seismic source. When applied to moving haulers, this action–reaction approach is complex. Vibrations from on-board equipment, such as pumps and tires, dirty the signal with noise. To facilitate any correlation, the signal must be cleaned up. Existing geophysical analytical techniques were manipulated to evaluate the noise problem and to filter sufficiently to permit an evaluation of whether a mining equipment action–ground response relationshipis in fact discernable.

"Description and UseDischarge liners or pulp lifters as they are sometimes called are a trough type liner used at the discharge end of the mill where ground ore passes to the trunnion.There are basically two methods of discharging pulp. The First and most common is the overflow method. Here ground ore travels from the feed to the discharge end where it exits through the discharge trunnion in an overflowing manner, hence the name ""overflow"". (See Figure I) The second method of discharging pulp is the grate method. With this method you block-off the trunnion and hold the ore inside the mill for a longer period of time. This allows only the desired size of ore out of the mill. Ore passes through the grate liners, into the Vibrathane Discharge liner, and finally down to the trunnion. Greater control of the ore size results wit1 this method as compared to the overflow method and it also eliminates reclassifying and regrinding. The treatment of aqueous CuSO4-H2SO4- As-Sb solutions by electrodialysis in order to separate and concentrate species of interest has recently been studied. Results show that it is possible to separate copper from arsenic in electrodialysis cells. The separation of copper from antimony is also possible. Transport rate ranges that could be achieved, depending on experimental conditions, are 0.2 to 0.6 mol per hour per square metre of membrane for copper, 0.65 to 2.8 for sulphate, and 0.016 to 0.03 for arsenic. Transport rates for antimony were inconclusive due to its very low solubility in the studied systems. Solution agitation and increasing temperature markedly increased the process rates. Advancements in this area require further work in both the thermodynamics (speciation) and kinetics of complex CuSO4- H2SO4-H2O systems, where impurities, other than As and Sb, and additives should be taken into account to gain a deeper understanding of the application of ED to copper electrorefining electrolytes

The nature of processes that take place on top of copper bearing grains during the suppression of copper acid drainage from mine tailings was studied on a grain model. Cyclic voltammetry (C.V.) was employed as an experimental technique suitable for indirect measuring of copper leaching. Experiments were done in sulfuric acid (pH=2) at electrodes that progressively approach the real situation during acid main drainage, starting with Cu-metal, then with CuO and finally with CuO covered with CaSO4. Oxidation was found to be the only process that takes place on metallic copper electrode anodically polarized up to 2 V vs. Cu/CuSO4 reference electrode. Dissolution is intensive and reaches up to 50 mA.cm-2. When the same was repeated, but on CuO electrode, anodic currents were some 4 times lower than on the bare metallic surface. This indicates that the electrode material is not completely oxidized to copper(II)oxide and the Cu(O) or Cu(I) residues are oxidized during the anodic polarization. This explains the diminished dissolution. Dissolution is further restricted at electrodes covered with CaSO4. It is some 20 times lower than on the bare oxide electrode. When the second layer of CaSO4 was applied, anodic currents were another 15 times lower. Total decrease of anodic currents when transition is made from Cu-metal to CuO covered with 2 layers of CaSO4 reaches up to 7.500 times. C.V. measurements produced a proof that mechanical blockage is the way how lime prevents leaching of copper bearing grains in immobilization experiments referred elsewhere.

"The Soviet Union has enormous reserves of iron ore in many different kinds of deposits that are widely distributed in this vast land area. The present iron ore industry is based mainly on deposits in Precambrian cherty iron-formation at Krivoy Rog, Kursk and Murmansk. Extensive reserves of both naturally enriched hematite ore and magnetite iron-formation in these areas alone could sup-ply all the domestic ore required for several hundred years.Many contact metasomatic magnetite deposits discovery in recent years in the eastern Ural Mountain belt and east of the Kusnetsov basin in Siberia are being developed, with ore reserves measured in billions of tons. Oolitic limonite-chamosite-siderite ores of Cretaceous and younger age at Kerch on the Black Sea and around the east and southern perimeter of the West Siberian basin constitute some of the largest concentrations of iron in the world. These sedimentary ores are low grade, of poor quality and difficult to beneficiate. Banded jasper magnetite and hematite iron-formation in volcanic rocks of Devonian age in Kazakhstan and along the Mongolian border are of special geoloica1 significance.Iron deposits in the Krivoy Rog and Kursk areas were examined and a large number of geologists discussed their work on deposits in many other parts of the Soviet Union during the writer's seven-week study tour of mines and research institutes in Moscow, Leningrad, Novosibirsk in Siberia and Kiev in the Ukraine. The descriptive geology of iron deposits of useable ore and of marginal material has been well documented in the course of systematic work and a large number of scientists are studying fundamental problems on the origin and treatment of iron ore."

I THINK it can be safely said that no mining operation, whetl1er open-pit or underground, is ever entirely free of water. It follows that every ton of ore bears a charge which represents, either directly or indirectly, the cost of keeping the mine workings as dry as possible. Water problems occur in all phases of mining operations. They cause difficult and costly drilling conditions during the exploration stage, they often seriously delay mine development, they can slow mine production and reduce efficiency, and they are a continued burden over the life of the mine. It is therefore in the interest of all mining men to be familiar with the methods and materials used for grouting. The most common grouting material is cement. Today, with the necessity of timely, on-budget and high quality completion of projects, proper use of construction equipment is essential to ensure project success. Construction equipment places a large monetary burden on the project and if not utilized efficiently, it can result in economic losses. Cranes are one of the most important and expensive operational devices on construction sites. They play a central role, and often activities that rely on crane services fall on the project?s critical path. Currently, material-handling scheduling is done by the crane operator or by an on-duty superintendent using his/hers personal judgment, making the process manual and timeconsuming. Thus, developing an optimal schedule, which considers different dynamic constraints in construction job site, may not be possible based on the current practice. This leads to longer operation times and a negative impact on project cost. This paper presents the latest results of an ongoing study, which aims to design and implement a nearreal time crane operation decision support system to be utilized directly by the crane operator or as an aid for the superintendent in scheduling optimal operation services. This system has several advantages such as maximizing the efficiency of crane operations, guaranteeing the best operation possible to reduce the crane?s travel time, reducing crews and equipment idle time, and minimizing the dependence on subjective human judgments.

"As study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between mill liner wear and grinding energy efficiency and to assess the opportunity to control mill speed to improve energy performance as mill liner wears. The study involved analysis of plant operating data and liner wear profiles over time. The operating work index was found to be an effective tool to identify the decrease of grinding efficiency along the liner service. The plant data show that the mill grinding efficiency as determined by monitoring the operating work index, and throughput decreases as liner wears. However, efficiency and throughput can be maintained by either changing the liner more frequently or by increasing the mill speed. Two scenarios for increasing mill throughput were analyzed. The first one involves changing the liner before the efficiency drops and the second one requires increasing the mill speed from 75% to 79%. Both scenarios show financial benefits that can be used in mill operations.INTRODUCTION The analysis of the mill power draw is used in this study as a key parameter for comparing mill liner profile and its effect on mill performance. Current technology and simulation software used in the mining industry do not factor in the impact of liner wear profiles in grinding efficiency and mill throughput (Toor, 2013). To address this gap, this study provides an analysis of key factors affecting mill throughput and grinding efficiency: mill speed, ball loading, and liner profiles. Several years of plant mill operating data, published research papers, and MillTraj® simulation results are used to demonstrate that face angles impact grinding efficiency and throughput and that mill speed can be used to overcome this problem. Moreover, the liner profile wear analyses clarify a mismatch between actual and estimated power draw calculations."

Approximately two-thirds of the annual 210,000 tons at copper refined by AMAX Inc. at the United States Metals Refining Company in Carteret, New Jersey, comes from a wide variety of copper scrap ranging from low-grade smelter scrap to wirebar-grade material. The equipment and methods used to effect such large-scale metal recycling in an urban area and the measures taken to collect and recover metal values from smelter and refinery byproducts while protecting the environment from pollution are described and discussed.

"The induration of iron ore pellets has always utilized prefired pellets to protect the pallet cars from the environment of the induration furnace. This paper presents the process used to obtain superior upper sidewalls. These heat resistant castings are used on induration pallet cars, and their life improvements by as much as 400% is a significant step towards the reduction of the prefired (or hearth layer pellets.) The benefit to the industry in the removal of the hearth layer is improved overall productivity. IntroductionThe Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates with production facilities located in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Sept Iles, Quebec. It has recently been acquired by North Limited, an Australian based resource oriented company. Prior to its acquisition, IOC has examined several methods of operational cost reductions. One of these was an examination of indurrating pallets. Pallets are composed of numerous assemblies and sub-assemblies. The examination of the upper sidewalls began as an intent to increase the operational life of the component. The anticipated net effect was to be a reduction in the overall pallet maintenance cost. All of the components and assemblies have undergone a severe scrutiny. IOC has found that the success of the project has depended upon not only the technical competency of all parties involved, but also upon the ability to share risk, to be innovative, and to find a partner with whom the development can proceed without fear and yet with accountability. IOC has found in Cast Steel Products (CSP) such a partner in the field of pallet development. This paper will undertake to explore the progression into the arena of partnering between IOC and CSP. CSP and IOC met in the fall of 1994. The work of re-engineering the pallets began with an initial order for 36 pallets in March, 1995. The work on the upper sidewalls involved segregation of the effect of alloy development versus physical geometry development. The nature of partnering between the two companies allocated alloy development to IOC and physical geometry development to CSP, yet no advancements were made in either area without the close co-operation or the involvement of both partners."

THE term "high pressure", as used in industry today, is applied rather loosely. Generally, it refers to pressures that are higher than those encountered in most industrial processes although no definite limits are normally stated. For the purpose of this talk I should like to set rather arbitrary limits to the term "high pressure", and in ab-solute figures this would be the range from 1000 psi to perhaps 40,000 or 50,000 p.s.i. The scope of high pressure technology is very broad, and it would take more time than we have avail-able here today to cover fully even one aspect of the field. Therefore, I should like to discuss just some of the techniques used and problems en-countered in high pressure operations. Research work into the high pressure region dates back about 150 years, but it was not until 1910 that the first commercial application of high pressure technology was made in the production of ammonia.

"Before getting into more specific aspects of my talk today I should put in one disclaimer - one week in Mainland China and one day with Premier Kosygin does not make me an expert on Sino-Soviet affairs nor on Canadian-Chinese relations. Perhaps though there is a message in the fact that one meeting took place in relative openness in China and the other was at least partly in a bullet-proof limousine in Canada. I thought it might be interesting and appropriate to explain something of the forest industry to you who are engaged in the mining industry. Our industry, like yours, is based on a natural resource and the basic activity that we engage in is the extraction and conversion of that resource into saleable materials. However, the fundamental difference between our industries is that our resource is on top of the ground - easily visible and easily measurable, whereas yours is under the ground - difficult to find and, having been found, expensive to measure. A second difference is that ours is renewable while yours is extractive, and you must keep finding more to keep up reserves."
