"The original design of mine openings and pillars at White Pine was based upon traditional assumptions; i.e., that the principal load is due to the weight of overburden, and that horizontal stresses are equal to one-. third of the vertical.Beginning January, 1964, borehole deformation measurements confirmed suspicions that the principal stress is horizontal and several times greater than the vertical.Vertical stress appears to be directly related to depth, but lateral stresses vary considerably in direction and magnitude. The direction of major principal stress lies parallel to the bedding and is apparently parallel to tension joints. Lateral stresses appear to originate from an igneous intrusive.Mining induces stresses which add to the primitive stresses, in some areas precipitating failure. In this paper, rock failures are illustrated, methods of measurement and typical results are given, and measures to counter or utilize the lateral stresses are described."

"The design, construction and commissioning of Kiena Gold Mines Limited's new mill was completed in 15 months ending in September 1984. Rated at 1250 tonnes per day the mill incorporates the latest innovative technology such as semi-autogenous grinding, carbon in pulp, pressure stripping and induction furnace refining. The mill is housed in a pre-engineered building with the leach tanks and thickeners located outdoors in spite of the intense winter cold. 1.0 INTRODUCTION AND HISTORYThe operations or Kiena Gold Mines Limited are located in Dubw1sson Township, approximately 10 Km west of Val d'Or, in the Abitibi region northwestern Quebec. Comprised of 59 mining claims covering 1214 hectares, a large portion of the mining property is overlain by the waters of Lac de Montigny. Sometime between 1911 and 1914 Barney Parker discovered gold in a shear zone on an island in Lac de Montigny that now bears his name. The first shaft the Parker Shaft, was sunk in 1936 from the island to a depth of 136 meters but owing to the known veins being of limited extent and the onset of the Second World War operations were terminated in 1940. In the early l960 1 s exploration drilling indicated an orebody of 4,500.000 tonnes at 6.3 grams of gold per tonne. A causeway was built to link the island to the mainland in 1963 and a new 3 compartment shaft was sunk to 403 metres. The orebody was further delineated and the ground conditions within the orebody and surrounds were evaluated.At the end of 1965 the property was placed on a care and maintenance basis as a mining operation would be marginal with gold selling at $35 per ounce."

A rough simulated borehole has been developed for the installation and dynamic testing of rock bolts a the WASM Dynamic Test Facility. The rough simulated borehole is used for rock bolts that are sensitive to equipment installation technique or borehole geometry (particularly friction rock stabilisers and resin encapsulated bolts). An extensive axial test program has quantified a difference between the static and dynamic capacity (kN/m of embedment) for friction rock stabilisers once sliding starts. The 47mm split tube bolt has a 50% reduction in embedment capacity (but with significant variation) dissipating 2.7kJ/100mm of sliding per meter of embedment, and the Omega (inflatable) bolt had a 70% reduction in embedment capacity dissipating 6.2kJ/100mm of sliding per meter of embedment. The Omega bolt dynamic capacity remainder at least equivalent to the split tube bolt static capacity.

Conventional hypereutectic Al-Si alloys such as A390 are used principally for the casting of components used in wear applications requiring abrasive resistance such as in engine or compressor blocks. A comprehensive study was undertaken to investigate the potential of improving the mechanical properties of these alloys by the addition of magnesium. A thorough thermodynamic study of the effect of the addition of Mg to the conventional A390 alloy showed that Mg2Si starts to form as a primary phase at 4.2% Mg as well as in the products of the binary and ternary eutectic reactions forming the matrix. Experiments were carried out in producing castings with different cooling and solidification rates of alloys with up to 10% Mg. Mg additions were found to increase the hardness over the as cast alloy due to solid solution strengthening. Also, T6 heat treatment greatly improved the tensile properties of these alloy compositions due to the strengthening effect of the theta-Al2Cu phase. The elongation of these alloys generally decreases marginally with Mg content. The most significant property improvement of the alloys with higher Mg content is the substantial increase in wear resistance. This is attributed to the dispersion of smaller particles of Mg2Si and their coherence with the matrix as compared to the large Si particles in the conventional alloy. A new rheoforming process for A390 is presented that improves the processing of the semi-solid slurry. Structure modification elements were also added to refine the primary and eutectic silicon greatly improving the processing of the semi-solid slurry.

We treat nickel, copper, cobalt, vanadium, molybdenum and precious metal containing materials like spent catalysts, ashes, dusts, grindings, liquids, slurries and sludge's as long as they contain one or a combination of the above mentioned metals. In our pyrometallurgical works we produce non-ferrous metal concentrates suitable for further treatment in our hydrometallurgical plant where we refine Ni-, Cu-, Co- and V-chemicals. "Microflotation, laboratory batch, and in-plant minicell continuous tests were conducted to determine if copper ions not only activate sphalerite but also depress pyrite when the minerals are together. Microflotation tests showed that pyrite recovery increased with addition of copper ions in the pH range of 5-10 when alone, but decreased when sphalerite was also present. Batch flotation tests (Red Dog ore) showed that upon addition of copper, pyrite recovery decreased significantly. The continuous tests (Louvicourt Mine) confirmed this and indicated that with excess copper pyrite recovery can increase. The results suggest there is competition for copper and xanthate in favour of sphalerite. To take advantage of this competition it may be necessary to control the sequence and rate of copper, collector, and lime addition. INTRODUCTIONFlotation, in common with all physical separations, is an imperfect process that results in misplacement of minerals. One source of this imperfection is accidental activation by contaminating metal ions. An important practical example is the misplacement of pyrite to zinc concentrates. Flotation of sphalerite generally requires activation by copper ions, added as copper sulphate. Copper ions are also used to activate pyrite [l] hence there is the suspicion that accidental activation contributes to the recovery of pyrite (Py) with the sphalerite (Sp). However, recent literature has shown that copper ions may make Py less floatable if Sp is also present. Xu et al. [2] conducted continuous minicell tests in-plant at Kidd Creek Operations (division of Falconbridge Ltd.) and showed that while the addition of copper sulphate improved zinc/iron selectivity, it did so as much by reducing the recovery of pyrite as increasing zinc recovery (Figure 1)."

ONE of the reasons advanced for the decline in prospecting and discovery is that, as regards surficial examination, the law of diminishing returns is becoming applicable. Fewer surficially unprospected fields remain; therefore, fewer discoveries by such means result. Much in the nature of mineral resources remains to be unearthed, but even now, and more so in the future, will discovery depend on painstaking petrographic and structural mapping, aided, where necessary, by judicious applications of all the complementary scientific knowledge and devices (e.g., thin section microscopy, geophysics, and drilling) that experience proves effective in localizing a mineral deposit even beneath drift, lake, or muskeg. It is to be expected, then, that the rate of discovery will decrease, that the cost per discovery will greatly increase, and that the work of discovery will become more and more the careful, methodical assembling of field data, conscientiously interpreted on the basis of scientific knowledge by trained, experienced operatives. In view of these trends, the status of applied geophysics to Canadian mining exploration and development work might well be reviewed. The niche which geophysics may occupy relative to geological surveying and drilling has been clarified by the last twenty years' experience. The cloud of somewhat justifiable scepticism that followed the 'geophysical promotion' period of the late 1920's has lifted. Mining, exploration, and finance companies, in open-minded fashion, are seeking sound advice as to what are the scope and limitations of the geophysical methods at present practised. The purpose of this paper and the following one is, therefore, as far as lies within the author's power, to review briefly the geophysical methods at present in practice in Canada, and, at greater length, to joint out impartially and critically their scope, merits, shortcomings, an possible future development. The treatment will be non-technical, the hope being that an accurate statement of the present status of geophysics in Canada may do much to result in a sounder, saner growth of what, in the future, shall undoubted} y prove an increasingly useful tool in exploration and development work. ?

"Milling is the weak link in the process chain of many mineral operations. While this activity accounts for only a relatively small proportion of the direct costs of most mineral processing complexes, there are intangible and indirect costs associated with milling which are extremely large. For example, significant opportunity costs are associated with the relatively low yields which characterize this stage of the process.There are changes abroad in the world which I believe are going to cause us to reformulate the whole concept of milling. Increased competition in mineral markets are going to force managers to look anew at the high mineral values reporting to tailings which are a high opportunity cost for many operations. Tailings recovery plants are not the ultimate solution to this problem. Greater environmental concerns are going to increase the costs associated with tailings disposal and force the mining industry to look for other ways to dispose of waste products. Technology changes currently underway in manufacturing and other process industries, such as the automated 'lights-out' plant are going to be brought into this industry, and the changes will be dramatic.These are major long term changes which probably seem rather remote to many managers and professionals in existing operations which are faced with much more mundane challenges arising from day-to-day operations. However, I believe that milling is increasingly a 'lean and keen' operation involving fewer and fewer people, but who are increasingly skilled and professional. Traditional cost management approaches are no longer adequate and the industry has to take a new look at the nature of cost reduction in this core activity. This stage in the mineral process provides opportunities for value creation leading to a significant unit cost advantage for the corporations willing to adopt a total cost approach."

"The stirred milling of nickel laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a netzsch™ lME4 stirred mill on siliceous goethitic, goethitic, and saprolitic nickel laterites. Tests on the -2,000 µm sample displayed the effects of selective comminution. The -38 µm product of grinding the -2,000/+38 µm feed confirmed the effects of selective grinding and nickel upgrading. Size classification followed by stirred milling is recommended for nickel upgrading. The energy requirement in the stirred milling was also investigated.RÉSUMÉ le broyage par billes de latérites comportant du nickel offre des possibilités d’amélioration de la libération et de la réduction sélective de la taille des minéraux nickélifères tendres dans les latérites. Des essais de broyage en vrac ont été effectués dans un broyeur à billes netzschMD lME4 sur des latérites nickélifères à goethite siliceuse, à goethite et saprolitiques. Des essais sur l’échantillon -2000 µm présentaient des effets d’une comminution sélective. le produit -38 µm de l’alimentation -2000/+38 µm confirme les effets d’un broyage sélectif et du rehaussement de la teneur en nickel. "On July 26, 2000, the Canada Foundation for Innovation announced an award of $1.3 M dollars for The Centre for Environmental Research in Minerals, Metals and Materials, CERM3, at The University of British Columbia. Additional funding was also provided by the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund ($1.3 M) and the UBC Stewart Blusson Fund ($0.7 M). Annual industrial grants and contracts are providing support funding for the on-going research projects. Corporate membership in CERM3 entitles each participant to a seat on the technical advisory committee (TAC) as well as access to the five laboratory facilities currently under construction. Both the federal and provincial governments will also participate in the TAC through NRCan-CANMET and the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines, respectively. CERM3’s mission is:• to develop innovative methods to deal with environmental problems created by mining activity;• to promote sustainable development as a hallmark of management decision-making; • to produce mining and processing engineers with the required environmental skills; and• to enhance the image of mining in society as a vibrant and necessary component of a modern economy and society which disturbs the environment for the benefit of mankind.CERM3 brings together a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from over 12 departments at The University of British Columbia (UBC) to work on mining-related environmental problems. These include: chemistry; soil sciences; chemical and biological engineering; earth and ocean sciences; microbiology; civil engineering; electrical engineering; metals and materials engineering; mechanical engineering; mining and mineral processing, the Westwater Research Centre; the Institute for Resources and the Environment; and the School of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene. The centre intends to interact with scientists from industry, governments and other universities across Canada and around the world. CERM3 aims to become Canada’s leading environmental research facility for the mining industry. This paper describes the evolution of CERM3 and its coordinated multi-disciplinary approach to mining and the environment. Some of CERM3’s research projects include:• developing new protocols for environmental analyses to provide consistent and reliable assays;• isolating a natural virus for Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and other bacteria responsible for acid rock drainage (ARD);• designing bio-remediation and adsorption techniques for mine effluents;• promoting and enhancing the use of hydrometallurgy to reduce environmental pollution;• examining new approaches to comminution to decrease energy consumption;• developing a magnetically levitated hoisting system to reduce the footprint of a mine operation;• building a state-of-the-art supercomputer network laboratory for mine/mill simulations; and• designing intelligent bulkheads to seal tunnels following mine closure to survive for 1000 years.This latter project involves the establishment of a research station at the Britannia mine site, 45 km north of Vancouver, which will provide a full-scale facility to design the “Millennium Plug” and contribute directly to the solution to one of North America’s worst ARD-contaminated sites."

"A moveable flotation miniplant was designed and constructed at the research laboratory of Inco Technical Services Ltd. to address the need for flowsheet development with a limited amount of ore (such as drill cores). It consists of one rod mill, two regrind ball mills, one vibratory screen, 24 flotation cells of various sizes and two Venturi aerated flotation columns. The setup has continuous monitoring capability for pH, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity and temperature in conditioning tanks and flotation cells. Various options regarding flotation reagents, circuit configurations, and fineness of primary grind and regrind can be readily evaluated. The throughput of the miniplant is 20 – 30 kg/hour ore.Unit operations such as flash flotation, magnetic separation and gravity concentration can also be evaluated as an integral part of an entire flowsheet development.This communication describes the basic design features of the miniplant and some examples of applications are given.INTRODUCTIONInco operates numerous mines in Sudbury and Thompson and will shortly bring the Voisey’s Bay mine into production. It has long been recognized that the ores from different mines or from different depths of the same mine can give different responses in flotation. There is a growing need to properly evaluate the ores before feeding the mill to maximize the return of the mine/mill operation. Inco Technical Services Limited at Sheridan Park, Mississauga, Ontario has developed a batch laboratory procedure to address this issue. The results are considered in the overall economical assessment of new mine operations.For ores that cannot be processed by the existing mill operations or that will be processed by a new mill, it is necessary to develop a flowsheet that can maximize the economical return of the mine/mill operation. While recognizing the importance and contribution of the laboratory batch flotation procedure, it does not generate reliable data for flowsheet simulation and design. A full-scale pilot plant campaign is normally required to obtain the design data but often this is not possible due to a limited amount of ore obtainable from the drill core. A small-scale pilot plant (mini pilot plant or miniplant) capable of processing 20-30 kg/h ore can provide this data prior to a full-scale pilot plant campaign. A miniplant can also be used to optimize the circuit configurations, reagent additions and recycle options of process water before pilot plant work and can be used to test a different flowsheet configuration for an existing mill before re-piping a plant circuit."

"A ball charge dynamics model is presented. Simulation results are compared with observed data showing good correlation. Based on the charge dynamics models, a liner wear model is presented along with some wear simulation results. Using the charge dynamics model with the liner wear model, it is possible to envision the predictions of mill power consumption as a function of liner wear. Further work is needed to validate the liner wear model.IntroductionFrom a process control point of view, industrial systems can be considered stationary or non-stationary. For example, the physical properties, such as geometric and/or material, of a system considered stationary do not change with time. However, this is not true for non-stationary systems such as those found in the mining industry where process dynamics are often violent with wear being an intrinsic process phenomenon.In this paper, a model for ball charge dynamics will be presented along with a description for liner wear. Simulation results for power draft prediction using the charge model will be compared with observed data. Further, liner wear results will also be presented."

"Wholly owned by the Coniagas Mining Company, the oldest continuously listed mining company on the Toronto Stock Exchange, St. Andrew Goldfields is located on Hwy. 101 approximately 30 miles east of downtown Timmins, Ontario. Geographically situated on the Porcupine-Destor Fault, the mine and mill in Stock township is positioned in the heart of Northeastern Ontario's goldmining communities.In July 1988, a 600 ft. shaft, hoist, and compressors were already in place when construction started on a 500 T.P.D. capacity C.I.P. mill and crushing plant.By June 15, 1989 the mill was commissioned and attained the design capacity by August of that same year. Since then, changes to the circuit have increased throughput to 900 T.P.D. from two significantly different ore sources.Meeting the Ministry of the Environment's guidelines is an ongoing commitment utilizing the Inca S02 process in line between the tailings pond and secondary polishing pond.INTRODUCTIONExploration on what is now known as St Andrew Goldfields' Stock Township Mine was carried out ln the early l960 1 s by Hollinger Mines Ltd. The property was acquired by Quebec Sturgeon River Mines 1n 1973 and the main shaft was started ill 1979.When St Andrew Goldfields was incorporated 1n 1983, exploration and development commenced to identify the ore body. The company decided 1n 1987 to bring the Stock township property into production after an extensive feasibility study and testwork at Lakefield Research in Toronto. Leslie Engineering was contracted to design, engineer and procure al 1. equipment from the coarse ore bin to the tailings distribution system and backfill plant"

Backfilling has become an integral process in underground mining operations, with varying cost-effective forms of application. This study is a part of an overall investigation into the backfill practices at Copper Cliff North Mine (CCNM). The mine is well-diversified in terms of backfill methodologies and practices. The mine employs different fill methods such as cemented and un-cemented rock fill, slag fill, and cemented hydraulic fill (or a combination of them) in order to fill the voids created by mining activities. The history of backfilling at CCNM has been dominated by cemented and un-cemented slag fill. Each fill method requires operating and engineering guidelines for a cost effective quality control system. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss the backfill methods and applications, operating guidelines, and engineering requirements at CCNM.

"Effect of mill speed on grinding kinetics has been investigated with a view to using mill speed as a manipulated variable for control and optimization of the grinding circuit performance under variable ore hardness conditions. Dry and wet batch grinding tests were carried out for quartz, limestone and cement clinker in a 29 cm x 18 cm laboratory ball mill. Mill speed values selected were 55 and 70% critical. In the case of dry grinding operation, with an exception of quartz, for all materials studied the effect of mill speed on grinding rate was found to be insignificant for sizes finer than about 35 mesh. In the case of wet operation, grinding rates were found to be approximately proportional to the mill speed. The implications of these results are discussed.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that mill speed has a considerable effect on the grinding rate of the ore particles l-3 For particles of a given size there is an optimum speed at which mill grinding efficiency is maximum (i.e. specific energy consumption is minimum) 3•4. Mill speed can, therefore, be effectively used as a manipulated variable to deal with the disturbances arising from changes in the size and hardness (grinding rate) of the ore being fed to the grinding circuit. Though, it has not been the case so far, with recent developments of ring motors2 and frequency inverters5 a continuous variation of mill speed has now become feasible, and it is expected that mill speed control will soon be a regular feature of plant operation2,6."

"With the narrow vein structure of Nova Scotia gold deposits, selective mining is rarely possible and mill heads will be too low (below 0.10 oz per ton of gold) to support a conventional mill of up to 1000 ton per day capacity at present gold prices. The recent operation of a small 100 t.p.d. mill at Cochrane Hill using fine grinding - leaching - filtration supported this assertion. Milling costs exceeded $25.00/ton of feed mainly due to high capital, labour and maintenance costs.Accordingly, since 1981, efforts have been directed towards the development of a cheap gold extraction process in terms of both capital and operating costs. The main criteria is to produce gold below US $200 per oz including all administration, mining and process stages. This paper describes such a process development for Cochrane Hill. LOCATION AND HISTORY OF THE PROPERTYThe Cochrane Hill property is located about 8 miles North of Sherbrooke, N.S. on highway No. 7. Sherbrooke is about 180 miles east of Halifax. Gold was originally discovered at Cochrane Hill in the 1860's. Early work consisted of trenching. In the 1930's a small shaft was sunk to about 80 feet and some tonnage treated using a stamp mill with gravity concentration of gold.Northumberland Mines Ltd. acquired a 70% interest in the property in 1977. Subsequent drilling indicated a potential zone of gold mineralization with a drill-indicated tonnage of one million tons having a grade of 0.07 ounces per ton of gold (all high assays cut to 1 oz) down to a depth of 300 feet recoverable by open pit mining methods. In broad terms, the goldbearing zone is about 50 feet wide and 800 feet long and dips at about 70°."

"Campbell Mine which has been in continuous operation since 1949 has undergone numerous operational changes in the past 3 years. This paper describes the process changes which have occurred at the Campbell Mill since 1991. The paper discusses the engineering, construction and startup of the effluent treatment circuit, the new oxide filtering and merrill-crowe precipitation circuit, and the changes to the pressure oxidation circuit. Particular attention is paid to startup problems and solutions to these problems. A review of the benefits and results of these process changes is also discussed. Future changes are also briefly reviewed with anticipated goals and expectations.IntroductionCampbell Mine is a gold mine 100% owned and operated by Placer Dome Canada. It is located in Balmertown, Ontario which is located 300 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Campbell Mine has been in continuous operation since 1949, producing nearly 8,000,000 ounces. In 1993 Campbell Mine is budgeted to produce 289, 750 ounces of gold at a cash cost of $157 US/ounce. Daily mill tonnage is budgeted for 1,430 tons/day but has milled as high as 1,600 tons/day on a consistent basis. Recovery in 1993 is 93.4% and is budgeted to average 94.5% in 1994.In the 1992 edition of the proceedings of the Canadian Mineral Processors conference I described the changes that were made at Campbell starting in 1989. This paper continues where the 1992 paper ended and discusses the changes to the Campbell mill since that lime. The changes to Campbell since January 1992 have been numerous with capital expenditure in the mill exceeding $14.1 million. This paper describes three primary projects since that lime: the effluent treatment project ($5.5 million), the oxide leach/filtering and merrill-crowe project ($4.6 million) and the pretreatment project ($2.81 million). The focus of this paper is to highlight the justification of each project, the design and engineering, and some of the initial operational problems and solutions applied to those problems."

Geologists or mining engineers familiar with geology are frequently requested by mine operators to give correlation in-formation regarding some mining property with respect to an adjacent area on one at some greater distance. It is the object of this article to mention a few of the difficulties involved in securing this information and to point out some of the salient factors upon which correlation is dependent. In view of the nature of the following discussion, a brief statement of the general character of coal formations .. seems appropriate. Coal formations, by reason of their environment of deposition which is in fresh or brackish water, exhibit the features common to continental deposits, in contrast to those of marine deposits. Such deposits are characterized by rapid variation in thickness and in lithological character both later-ally and vertically. (Plate 1 A). They consist essentially of sandstones and clay shales with all gradations between them, and also a few beds of coal and frequently some conglomerates.

"Geophysical test surveys were conducted with various methods (EM, lP, gravity and magnetic) over the McClean uranium deposits of the Canadian Oxy- lnco Joint Venture. The result s were assessed to judge the contribution each method might make toward further discoveries of graphite-associated uranium occurrences.The best drill targets have proven to be discontinuities in graphitic conductors and locations where the tatter are intersected by fracture zones in the Athabasca. The tests demonstrated that the preferred combination of geophysical survey s is horizontal loop EM to locate graphitic conductors in the basement and VLF-EM to locate the fractures.IntroductionThe discoveries of the McClean North and South uranium deposit s (Fig. 1) are essentially geophysical successes resulting from drilling MaxMin delineations of INPUT airborne electromagnetic responses (Saracoglu et al., 1983). After the initial discovery in 1979, various geophysical methods, techniques and instruments were employed to test their effectiveness in this environment and to guide exploration for other deposit s of a similar nature in the remainder of the 260 km2 property.The McClean uranium deposits lie below 150 m to 180 m of overburden and Athabasca Group. Radioactive signatures might be expected; however, the Athabasca Group acts as a barrier to radioactive emanations. Fortunately, the uranium mineralization is associated with graphite in the crystalline basement. Prior drilling of ground electromagnetic anomalies confirmed that EM surveys could locate and out line basement graphitic conductors. However, as there were many anomalies, most of which could not reasonably be expected to be associated with uranium , there was need to identify additional parameters, related to mineralization, which could be detected geophysically and used to narrow the search."
