The Noranda Reactor Process (NRP) has been in operation now for more than 30 years and this mature process has attained a high level of performance. The NRP at the Home Smelter of Xstrata Copper treats a wide range of feed materials and a thorough knowledge of both process control and smelting physico-chemistry has been beneficial to help meet the required plant flexibility. In this regard, some level of predictive knowledge related to slag chemistry, in particular, the liquid and solid phases such as spinels or olivines, has been found to be beneficial. In the last decade or so, the availability of commercial thermodynamic modeling packages, such as Factsage1m have been utilized with advantage to help the plant optimize slag chemistry and minimize problems from difficult slags, for example, those the could arise from undue feed variability. This paper illustrates the application of this software in examining a range of operating parameters such as: %Fe in product matte, the %Fe/%Si02 ratio in the slag, the levels of minor slag components including CaO, Ah03, ZnO, and MgO, and the level of oxygen enrichment on the operating conditions of the NRP. The slag composition boundaries at the conditions affecting magnetite control and solid magnetite/other precipitated solid phases, as well the conditions influencing the slag liquidus ranges of NRP slags are also discussed with respect to the overall process chemistry.

"The 1980s have proven extremely difficult years for many resource-based organizations. Mining companies have learned how to weather the negative effects of inevitable economic cycles. However, with some notable exceptions, such as gold mining companies, the mining industry has faced a broader and deeper round of cutbacks than any experienced since the 1930s. Downsizing has been a major issue for many mining companies as they have faced the need for dramatic staffing cost reductions in the recent past.The continuing current rapid rate of change in technology and the marketplace, coupled with increasing merger and acquisition activity, will provide an on-going need for some companies to face major reorganization. This inevitably will involve down-sizing activity in some instances.Given this scenario, it is worth reviewing the industry's past experiences to identify approaches and techniques that could prove of value in handling a future staff downsizing challenge. This paper is based upon a downsizing consultant's experiences with the mining industry and other sectors, and highlights what appear to be key staff reduction planning and process issues.Planning for DownsizingA review of companies' downsizing activities of the last few years reveals four key activity stages which need to be addressed to ensure a successful transition. These stages are:1. organization planning;2. developing cost reduction strategies;3. implementing downsizing; and4. building for the future.A business situation that is severe enough to require drastic staff cuts typically affects all aspects of a company's operations. Most mining companies have reviewed cost efficiencies in many operational areas. However, these reviews often have been short term in focus . As a result, some companies have experienced multiple downsizing; each event a response to an immediate economic threat. This has sometimes resulted in an unstable organizational environment, with severe stresses on staff morale and productivity.In the long term it is more efficient and less stressful to the organization to adopt a more comprehensive and longer-term strategy. Especially in capital intensive mining operations, it makes sense to review all areas of business activity, not just staffing."

Mine-wide (MW) microseismic systems use widely spaced transducers to determine the source location and parameters of stronger microseismic events, while high frequency (HF) systems use fewer transducers to monitor local areas for the weaker events that can precede stronger events. Previous monitoring at the Creighton Mine indicated that an HF transducer located 120 m away from an active stope recorded two types of activity in response to production blasting: the first occurring at the same time as the production blasts and associated with the passage of the direct seismic waves from the blast through the local area, and the second occurring several hours later and associated with the arrival of a slower moving stress change through the rock mass (which was identified by the mine’s MW system). Interpretations of locally increased stress levels, based on analysis of the recorded HF events, correlated with the nearby occurrence of two strong seismic events. These results were applied to a similar monitoring trail at the Kidd Creek Mine where the transient stress changes induced by several development blasts were monitored. It was observed that increases in HF activity corresponded with the occurrence of MW events near the transducer location, and that fewer HF events were recorded the longer this occurred after the blast. Local geological features appeared to influence the number and occurrence of both HF and MW events.

Total station has been predominantly applied in stationary survey scenarios in construction. With the moving target tracking and point survey automation functions, a robotic total station (RTS) lends itself well to more dynamic applications. Nevertheless, a RTS unit is still unable to track multiple targets simultaneously or to survey a target point when the line-of-sight is temporarily unavailable. In this paper, we propose a methodology to synchronize and automate multiple RTS units intended to address dynamic tracking and surveying applications in the construction field. By using the application programming interface (API) from the manufacturer, we implement the proposed methodology and the prototype system integrates two RTS units in regard to space and time and communicates survey command instructions among RTS units through wireless networks. The two RTS units can be operated to survey the two ends of one swinging sling concurrently in order to retrieve the actual length of the sling within several millimeters accuracy. Besides, in applications where line-of-sight between a target object and one RTS unit cannot be guaranteed all the time, continuous surveying can be materialized by automatically delegating the task to another synchronized RTS unit with clear view of the target object. A field test was conducted to demonstrate the application of the proposed automation approach in which sling length was measured of a rigging framework used for lifting industrial modules. The testing results are presented and achievable accuracy and reliability are discussed. The proposed solution overcomes the limitations of global positioning system (GPS) and laser scanning and holds high potential to provide cost effective solutions to many dynamic field applications.

Introduction Up to the present, the operation of small mills for the treatment of gold ores has not been favoured in Canada to the extent that it has in other countries. For instance, a list of the operating properties in Southern Rhodesia, published in The Rhodesian Mining Journal of November, 1934, shows for the month of September, 1934, that there were over 500 small mills treating less than 50 tons per day, and the majority of these between 5 and 25 tons. They are operated by individuals, syndicates, and small mining companies. It is presumed that the operations are profitable, although from the published figures of the tonnages treated and the yields, it is difficult for one familiar with Canadian operations to understand how this can be possible, in the majority of cases. Most of these small mills employ stamps with plate amalgamation and with, occasionally, tables to produce a concentrate. Enquiries have been received from many parts of the world respecting milling practice suitable for small gold mines and the type of plant used in Canada. The tenor of these enquiries leaves the impression that the majority of the writers assume that the practice would be similar at all small properties. This, of course, is not the case. Conditions vary widely, and what would be a suitable mill for a typical Nova Scotia ore would not necessarily be wholly adaptable to many ores in Ontario, Quebec, or British Columbia. This paper has been written with the intention of inviting discussion, and it is hoped that, by such discussion, the subject will be more fully dealt with than has been possible in the time at the disposal of the writer. Only more or less standard principles and practices have been dealt with, and, purposely, no reference has been made to plants using mills of the Hadsel, the Nutt, or the Gibson type. As there is available but little reliable information on the costs of installation and operation of small mills, it is also hoped that those contributing to the discussion of milling practices for small mines will be in a position to give these data for the benefit of those contemplating the erection of small plants in Canada. Although it is difficult to generalize, it can be said that there are three types of gold mills commonly used at small mines: (1) Amalgamation and Gravity Concentration; (2) Amalgamation and Flotation; and (3) Cyanidation.

ABSTRACT In this paper, we used data collected from the Gibraltar mine to analyze the effect of the TyreSense tire monitoring system on tire performance by reducing tire wear and preventing premature tire failure or damage. We analyzed the relationship between tire temperature, tire pressure, and tire failure or damage to help better understand the importance of controlling high tire temperature and pressure. The results enhance and expand the knowledge of the management of tire operational pressure and temperature.

Laboratory testing examined the effect of a variety of intrinsic rock properties and environment conditions that influence the adhesive bond between rock and thin spray-on liners. The liner materials used for these tests were Tekflex, provided by Fosroc, Castonite, provided by Rohms and Haas Co., Rockweb provided by Spray-on Plastics, and CS 1251 2K, provided by Master Builders. Some of the variables examined include: rock strength (tensile/compressive strength) rock mineralogy, rock surface roughness (grain size, fracture/joint roughness), and surface contamination (oil, water or dust). Under optimal conditions, adhesive strengths reaching at least 3 MPa can be achieved. Where the rock surface is contaminated with dust or the rock is weak in tension, it may be difficult to reach adhesion strengths of 1 to 1.5 MPa.

Process-oriented experiments on the use of coal as an adsorbent for certain soluble components of sewage are described. The capacity of Canadian coals for these components was less than 0.1 per cent by weight for the highest concentration at which these components could be expected to be found in domestic sewage. This is much less than values reported in the past. A pronounced selectivity between components was observed. Experiments on bacteria removal in beds of coal, regeneration of spent coal to restore adsorption capacity and COD contributions of coal are reported in the paper. The simple application of coal as an adsorbent does not seem promising.

"1.0 SummaryThe Pierina deposit was acquired in August 1996 when Barrick Gold Corporation purchased Arequipa Resources, a junior mining company with extensive land positions in Peru. At the time of acquisition, Arequipa had developed two exploration tunnels and drilled 9 exploration holes on the property. Metallurgical tests, conducted on samples taken from the tunnels and the exploration holes indicated that the ore was amenable to heap leaching. Barrick’s exploration team recognised from the outset, the potential of the mineralisation and convinced Barrick’s senior management that this was indeed a world class deposit that should be pursued. On November 25, 1998, the first dore was poured at Pierina, 27 months from the time of acquisition. During that period Barrick completed its exploration programme, prepared a development plan including capital and operating costs, production profiles and cash flow forecasts, and a schedule to develop a mine and construct a leach pad and gold recovery plant, including all supporting infrastructure. All permits and environmental approvals were obtained and all necessary land was acquired. The project was completed on schedule and under budget. This was the first greenfield mine development for Barrick outside of North America.This paper details, mainly, the research and development, engineering, construction and commissioning of the metallurgical process facilities.2.0 The Develonment ProgrammeImmediately after the acquisition, Barrick began the process of gathering information required to prepare a project development plan. "Agnico Eagle LaRonde produces over 300,000 ounces of gold annually, along with silver, zinc and copper by-products. The LaRonde plant consists of a conventional SAG and Ball mill circuit, followed by flotation. Load management is imperative for maintaining stability in grind size and ensuring consistency of the flotation feed. In flotation, the mass pull profiles of the cells and reagent dosage rates need to be managed to maximize recovery, while maintaining product quality. This is achieved by controlling the air, level and reagent addition set-points across the circuit. However, disturbances such as feed size distribution, ore hardness and mineralogy make it challenging to maintain efficient control using traditional control techniques. LaRonde therefore worked to develop a progressive control strategy, targeting stability and optimization. This started with a year-long instrumentation upgrade campaign, focusing on optimizing the performance and reliability of plant-wide instrumentation. The process was then optimized, leveraging AwaRE advanced controllers running in closed loop with PARC modules embedded within the PLC. The installation of 8 PFC cameras in flotation changed the flotation operation from a level and air control based strategy, to one that controls mass pull. This new control philosophy has allowed the plant to effectively manage mill load, improving grind size and providing increased throughput with better flotation performance.INTRODUCTION Background Since 2015, Agnico Eagle LaRonde has been conducting an optimization campaign to maximise the performance of plant assets leveraging instrumentation and control. "Improving comminution efficiencies with better machine geometries and motions, improved nip angles, rock movement control, and voids regulation among rocks are some of the next steps to better machine performance. Recent gains (~30%) using high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRS) and vertical roller mills, in theory and practice, are based on Prof. Klaus Schönert’s academic studies (1979–1996) on rock breakage physics. More recently, University of British Columbia Prof. Bern Klein’s studies (2006–present) via the Ph.D. thesis of Z. Davaanyam (2015) further validate theory with practice from laboratory measurements used in this paper.They demonstrated ideal rock compression breakage, within HPGR and vertical roller mill machines using a piston-die apparatus. Similar rock size range is used. The piston-die confine rock breakage behavior. However, these studies do not extend to larger rocks (> 75 mm), and do not demonstrate the influence of rock voids among bifurcation of rocks during comminution. Further, machines fed with larger rock sizes, such as gyratory, jaw, and cone crushers, are not designed or evaluated for geometry nip angle efficiency.Herein we illustrate a performance gain of a new comminution machine, the conjugate anvil-hammer mill (CAHM), first presented at SAG 2011 (Nordell, 2012). The CAHM machine digests rock sizes 400% larger than HPGR, improves rock grip/nip geometry, better improves rock voids, improves surface wear life > 500%, and improves rock containment and slippage during compression. In all, the CAHM machine shows 22 potential improvements over the HPGR. Most importantly, CAHM shows a 50% kWh/ton improvement compared to the HPGR. Our studies use an advanced Discrete Element Method (DEM) computer program called ROCKY. ROCKY simulates moving boundaries, surface wear mechanics, and incorporates rock breakage physics based on the fundamentals of JKMRC T10 protocol [×] with tuned A × b breakage parameters.We calibrate rock breakage in our DEM code to mimicking both UBC laboratory piston-die and HPGR comminution measurements. We then model CAHM with these known ore and machine properties. Differences are illustrated using DEM techniques on each machine, including key points of when each: use geometry; initiate bifurcation breakage; provide a map of particle size distribution by location; illustrate the importance of controlling voids to minimize agglomeration after breakage; machine performance limits; and kWh/ton benefit."

"Air Products approached LAC Minerals in 1987 to initiate trials with pure oxygen in the leach circuit at several LAC facilities in Canada. This paper gives an overview of oxygen use and covers specific operating data from the Doyon and Terrains Aurifères mills near Val D'Or in northwestern Quebec. LAC also uses oxygen at the Macassa mill in Kirkland Lake, Ontario.In addition to the LAC facilities, oxygen is currently in use for test purposes at the Holt McDermott mine in Kirkland Lake, Ontario and the Camflo mine near Val D'Or.There are two requirements for oxygen in the cyanide leach mill. Firstly, oxygen is required in the familiar gold dissolution reaction as follows:(1) 4 AU (s) + 8 NaCN (aq) + 02 (aq)+ 2H 20(aq) - 4NaAu(CN) 2(aq)+ 4Na OH(aq)Of the reagents on the left side of the equation, the availability of gold is fixed by the ore in question. Obviously, water is available in excess, 1eaving cyanide and oxygen as the limiting constituents in the process. Most mills operate with an excess of cyanide, which is fairly closely monitored. Dissolved oxygen levels, however, are not normally watched very closely and find their own level based on the temperature, the availability of compressed air and the ability of the ore to consume oxygen.Typical D.O. levels are in the 3-8 ppm range, however levels less than 1 ppm are not uncommon for refractory ores.With pure oxygen, dissolved oxygen levels as high as 30 ppm can be achieved. (Figure #1). This greatly accelerates the kinetics of the leach reaction and may also shift the reaction further towards completion thus increasing gold dissolution slightly."

IN the fall of 1929, a paper was presented at the Annual Western Meeting of the Institute entitled The Fuel Research Laboratories at Ottawa and the Scope of Their Investigations. At that time, the equipment of the laboratories had not been completely installed, but the regular routine work was being carried on as usual, and several large-scale investigations were being conducted. It is now five years since that paper was presented, and it seems fitting that a brief description of the investigations which have been undertaken, together with results-especially those which have reference to western Canadian fuels-be presented at this Annual Western Meeting. The coal mining industry of western Canada has, within the past few years, suffered many unfortunate vicissitudes. The replacement of coals by oil, for bunkering ships, for operating railway locomotives, and for heating, has weighed heavily on the coal mining industry of British Columbia and Alberta generally, but more particularly in the Crowsnest Pass area and Vancouver-and hydro-electric developments have also left their impress. With a full appreciation of these conditions, the Department of Mines planned research and large-scale investigations which it was considered would be of the greatest benefit to the coal industry, and the results have amply justified the plans and anticipations. The fact, however, must not be lost sight of, that the application of the findings of certain of these investigations would not have been feasible had not the Federal Government assisted the transportation of coal by the application of railway subventions. These subventions permitted Canadian coals to compete at competitive points with United States coals, and it must be admitted also in this connection that certain of the collieries which have benefitted, both as a result of the railway subventions and the investigations conducted by the Fuel Research Laboratories of the Department of Mines, made special efforts to produce a coal which was capable of competing with the American product, by special preparation at the mines.

THE DEVELOPMENT by the Iron Ore Company of Canada of the Quebec-Labrador mining project, which eventually led to 'Iron Ore in 1954', involved, from the start, several distinct undertakings. Among them, the most important were: The construction of a 360-mile railway, linking Knob Lake with Seven Islands. The erection of a railway terminal, and harbour facilities, at Seven Islands itself. The building of an entire townsite at Schefferville (formerly Knob Lake) The construction of two hydroelectric plants; and, finally, The development of a sufficient number of orebodies to enable a production of 10 to 15 million tons of ore a year. Since these phases of the project have already been the subject of previous discussions, this paper will not elaborate further on them but will rather concern itself with a brief outline of the Company's current mining practices.

The development of an underground repository for the storage of spent nuclear fuel relies on a multi-barrier system to isolate the used fuel from the environment – ultimately, the biosphere. These barriers include engineered copper and steal canisters, dense bentonite, and the natural rock as well. In order to reduce the potential flow pathway along the excavation induced damage zone, various slots perpendicular to the excavation axis have been proposed. These slots are called cut-off seals and generally are filled with bentonite as it has high swelling potential and very low permeability. Many different geometries have been proposed, but clear guidelines on the selection of the optimum geometry have yet to be developed. In order to assess the optimum geometry, three shapes have been selected for this numerical study, including a trapezoid, a triangle, and a thin rectangular slot. The cut-offs were modelled for a conceptual shaft constructed in the Queenston Formation from Ontario over a stress to strength ratio that has been found at many underground research laboratories. It was found that the excavation of a triangular and thin slot cut-off had the smallest increase in the damage as quantified based on the extensile volumetric strain within the plastic yield zone. Both shapes showed an increase in the damaged zone by 13 cm at a stress to strength ratio of 2.75. The trapezoidal cut-off damage zone increased by 20 cm at the same stress to strength ratio. Further study is required to better define the optimum cut-off shape for wider variety of conditions and other geological formations.

"It is common in rock engineering practice to characterize the triaxial strength of intact rock by using only data samples of small size. Practical guidelines such as ASTM support such sample sizes. In this paper, we investigate the reliability of the Hoek-Brown strength criterion estimated from such samples. For this purpose, we use an unusually large published set of triaxial strength data to randomly select a large number of data samples of small size to simulate the situation that frequently encounters in practice. The samples are generated with different arrangements with regards to the confining pressure. We fit the Hoek-Brown criterion to each of these samples, obtain estimates of strength parameters and compare them to those obtained from the complete data set. Our analysis suggests that estimates based on small samples are not reliable and can lead to both over- and under-estimation of strength.Additionally, we use these small samples to investigate the statistical methods for obtaining design values of strength as suggested by limit state design standards such as Eurocode 7. We show that, if used in conjunction with small samples, these methods do not guarantee a safe estimate of strength and in many cases lead to highly over-conservative estimates.We present a potential solution to this problem by augmenting the small data sets with Bayesian informative priors to give much more reliable estimates of strength. We conclude with suggestions for the development of informative prior distributions."

"A world class rare metals ore deposit in Africa belongs to a massive granite type poly-metallic pyrochlore-niobium resource. Successful project development in realizing the resource is vital to Africa’s economy and pyrochlore processing technology.The ore properties are quite complex due to the presence of varieties of valuable minerals, fine dissemination and intimate association of minerals and the relative abundance of easy-floatable minerals. The separation of pyrochlore from zircon, calcite and mica is generally considered difficult. Whilst studies have previously been conducted by several independent institutions overseas, no satisfactory process has yet been developed to date for the ore deposit—possibly due to the process designed being too complex; high cost of regents; lower performance.Based on process mineralogy study and extensive testwork, the authors have in recent years developed a new technology—“De-slime—Iron-rejection—Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation—Pyrochlore flotation”. The flow-sheet is characterized by ?1prior removal of slimes and iron minerals; ?2 Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation; and ?3Pyrochlore flotation applying new type of chelating collector GYX3 developed by GZRINM in conjunction with selected regulators and depressants.The process involved in the new technology is simple to implement and facilitates stable operation; the flotation reagent regime is easily adaptable; the cost of main reagent is lower largely because it is easy to manufacture and is environmental friendly. Laboratory test results demonstrated that, for raw ore assaying 0.35% Nb2O5, 0.03% Ta2O5 and 0.45% ZrO2, pyrochlore concentrate grade of >35% Nb2O5 could be obtained with >74% recovery. Meanwhile, the Ta2O5 content in pyrochlore concentrate could be recycled, and ZrO2 recovery >50% could be achieved in zircon concentrate assaying ZrO2>63%—significantly improving the technical-economic indicator. These results were verified in pilot trials of 1.44t/d throughput. The paper presents the new technology in whole, summarizes the key factors affecting its performance and discusses in simple terms the mechanism of separation."

"An experimental program has been carried out by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission to compare the effectiveness of Caro's acid as an alternative oxidant to pyrolusite in the leaching of uranium ores from the Alligator Rivers region of northern Australia. Batch leaching tests on Ranger, Nabarlek, Koongarra and Jabiluka ores showed that uranium extraction was unaffected by choice of oxidant, but that Caro's acid reduced acid requirements by 15 - 25%. Lime requirements for neutralization of tailings liquors were reduced by 20 - 30%.The batch studies were extended to a four-stage continuous leaching circuit with a capacity of 400 gore h-I. Comparative leaching tests confirmed the reagent savings obtained in the batch tests. Following these encouraging laboratory results, lnterox Chemicals Pty Ltd carried out plant trials using Caro's acid. Reagent savings in the mill were similar to, or better than, those obtained in laboratory test work. The trials also established that Caro's acid has a number of operational advantages over pyrolusite.IntroductionUranium is most commonly extracted from its ores by leaching in sulphuric acid. Simple hexavalent uranium oxides and compounds are readily soluble but uranium in the tetravalent form is insoluble and must be oxidized for dissolution to occur. The most commonly used oxidants have been sodium chlorate and manganese dioxide. They act indirectly by maintaining iron as the ferric ion which oxidizes uranium by a surface electro- chemical reaction. An Fe3+ concentration of about 1 - 2 g L-I is usually considered adequate for the effective dissolution of uraninite(1)."
