"Parameters f or design and development of an emergency hoist system (Fig. I) were submitted to Timberland Equipment Limited of Woodstock, Ontario by the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited.The unit is the first of its kind in Canada. Not only does it comply with the province of Saskatchewan's mining regulations, but has the added advantage of being completely mobile and self-contained.As well as being useful in the mining industry, the mobile hoist unit could be used in other emergency situations such as rescuing people trapped in wells.JustificationRevisions to the Mines Regulations under Section 13 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1977, of the Province of Saskatchewan stipulate as follows:"" Section 410 .04(4) The Mine Employer shall make adequate provision at every mine where any worker is hoisted in a shaft not equipped with a manway to enable an y such worker trapped in a conveyance in the shaft to be rescued . "" It was not possible to equip the shafts at PCS Mining' s Divisions with "" manways"" and therefore an alternative was required.BackgroundThe Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited, a subsidiary of the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, operates four potash mines. Of these, three, Cory, Rocanville and Lanigan Divisions are wholly owned while the fourth, Allan Division, is 40% owned by Kidd Creek Mines Ltd., but managed by PCS Mining. The four underground operations all have a service and production shaft.From 1979 to 1981 the PCS Mining Division, along with Central Canada Potash, were developing an idea to use the existing ground-mounted timberland hoist at Lanigan as an emergency hoist. This hoist was used in the past for rope-up work at both Rocanville and Lanigan and other potash mine s. The Department of Labour at this time had concerns about the time it would take to load, t ran sport and re-install the hoist on a foundation when needed for an emergency. Weight and size made this particular unit very cumbersome for transporting.In addition, the speed at which this hoist operates is too slow for rescue work. When the Department of Labour expressed concern that this unit would be unsuitable for these rea sons, a search for a suitable unit was initiated.The project responsibility for procuring an emergency hoist for the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited was assigned to the author, a shaft/ hoist specialist a t PCS Mining."

"BHP-Billiton’s Cannington mine in Northwest Queensland produces a silver-rich lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. The plant has the capacity to treat 3.1 mta and for the year to June 2006 mean feed grade was 10.3% Pb, 461 g/t Ag and 3.7% Zn. Recovery losses of lead and silver are primarily in the fine fractions. In 2001, the plant was modified when it was determined that splitting the lead feed into two size fractions, and floating the two fractions separately increased fine lead and silver recovery. The fine lead fraction (called the split float) is 80% <16µm and about a quarter of the lead and silver is in the finest fractions. In 2006 to further improve lead and silver recovery a statistical plant trial of magnetic aggregation conditioning of the split float feed was undertaken. While pure galena is diamagnetic the Cannington galena contains iron within the galena mineral resulting in the galena having a paramagnetic, magnetic susceptibility. The trial demonstrated to greater than 98% statistical significance an increase in lead recovery, and to 99% statistical significance an increase in silver recovery, and to greater than 97% significance an increase in the lead in concentrate in the split float circuit. These economic recovery benefits with magnetic aggregation of the split float feed, has led to the incorporation of this technology in the plant.INTRODUCTIONThe BHP-Billiton owned Cannington silver, lead and zinc mine is located in the Australian state of Queensland about 800 kilometres west of the coastal city of Townsville. This is a pastoral area characterised by large cattle farms, low population density and very little infrastructure. The area has two seasons, a wet, hot summer and a dry, mild winter. Because of its isolation and lack of infrastructure the mine has always operated on a fly in fly out basis.Geological drilling defined the resource as 43.8 million tonnes grading 11.6% lead, 4.4% zinc and 538 ppm silver (Walters and Bailey, 1998). At times during its history Cannington has held the crown as the single largest lead and silver mine in the world (Torrisi and Smith 2003). Another unique characteristic of the operation’s history is the rapid progress from discovery to operation. The first drill to intersect the ore body was in 1990 and the mine and plant was commissioned in 1997."

London Mining Plc. is developing an iron ore project in Sierra Leone. The Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by others since the 1930?s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the prior operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960?s. Following civil war In Sierra Leone, London Mining obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. There are two ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings from previous operations. Phase 1 will be the mining of the tailings resource with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mtpa. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Phase 2 will include development of the two ore deposits. These deposits are weathered secondary ore and the main primary ore resource. Phase 2 is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production in 2016. Outotec partnered with London Mining on testing efforts to develop the magnetic separation flowsheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa material. This paper explains the flowsheet development process for the weathered and primary ores commencing with sample characterization and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flowsheet configuration is explained, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, clearly demonstrating the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit in iron ore tailings treatment applications.

Few industries are more challenged by technical, political and market uncertainty than the mineral industry. Technical uncertainty in mining projects concerns the volume and quality of the resource, the processing and metallurgical parameters, the production efficiency, etc. Political uncertainty can take diverse forms and includes possibilities of change in the taxation system, risk of expropriation and risk of social instability or war. Market uncertainty depends on the market structure of the commodity; price and demand volatilities are the most common sources of market uncertainty. Intensive feasibility studies including these uncertainties and risks are required before investing up to billions of dollars in the development of a new mine. Current feasibility studies are often based on a single (or very few) mean geological scenario and simplified price profiles along the life of the project. Yet, strategic decisions, for example, the level of investment in exploration and metallurgical studies, adoption of a flexible, but more costly, mine design and risk-sharing strategies are made at an early stage. Over the last twenty years, Real Option theory has emerged as a unifying framework enabling strategic planning under uncertainty (technical, political and market). Geological and market variances (second order statistics) are pivotal for proper uncertainty quantification. The present study explores the possible benefits of combining modern geostatistical tools and financial techniques for project management. More precisely, the following questions are examined: Is geological uncertainty really an issue? Can we combine geological and price uncertainties in a unifying Real Option framework? A simple example aimed at illustrating the concepts involved is presented.

"Aqueous slurries of fine particle size calcium carbonate are used in a diverse range of end-use products. In many cases, the end use performance is governed by the fineness of the particle size distribution. In turn, the maximum fineness of the particle size distribution is primarily determined by the efficiency of the dispersants used during the production process. Here we report the sodium polyacrylate mediated dispersion of calcite and kaolin. Firstly, we report a colloid chemical description of the dispersant behaviour and attribute the stabilisation to both steric and electrostatic mechanisms. Secondly, we describe how the understanding developed in the first part of the study can be utilised to produce more effective dispersant systems which allow the preparation of, added value, higher solids and finer particle size calcium carbonate slurry products.INTRODUCTIONConcentrated aqueous dispersions of fine, particulate kaolin and calcium carbonate are used extensively in the coating of paper. Currently more than 10 million tonnes of such dispersions are used annually in North America and Europe alone, and worldwide consumption is growing at around 3% per year.Generally, paper is coated to enhance its visual appearance. Firstly, coatings improve the optical properties of the blank sheet, i.e. its brightness (or whiteness), opacity and gloss. Secondly, they improve the physical properties of the sheet that will influence the quality of the final printed image, such as surface smoothness, porosity, and ink absorption. In order to achieve these aims economically, paper coatings must be applied at high speeds and with minimal drying costs.Kaolin and calcium carbonate pigments are the major components of most paper coating formulations. Particle size distributions are chosen to maximise the optical benefits that they confer, and to allow the production of formulations that can be easily pumped, handled and coated. Coating pigments are generally produced and transported as slurries, and so it is important to obtain dispersions with the highest possible solids content, both to minimise drying costs and the quantity of water transported. This paper examines the dispersant technology that is currently used in the industry and the mechanisms by which it functions, and illustrates ways in which this technology has developed and could be further improved in the future."

"The Porgera orebody is located in mountainous terrain in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea. An underground mine has been developed which produces up to 2000 t/d of ore grading over 2 ozs Au/t. Some 79% of the gold in the ore is free, with the balance in a highly refractory form as sub-microscopic gold evenly disseminated within a pyrite matrix.This paper describes the metallurgical plant that uses flotation and cyanidation circuits to effectively recover the free gold in the ore feed, allowing for wide variation in the gold head grade. The refractory gold component in the ore is stored as leached pyrite flotation concentrate and this concentrate will be later treated by autoclaving techniques to recover the contained gold.The ProiectThe property is located in the Porgera Valley 600 Km North West of Port Moresby. The remote location is 2500 m above sea level. The mine area has 3600 mm of annual rainfall and a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 10° c to 22° c throughout the year.Alluvial gold was reported in the Porgera area in 1938 and has been an important source of revenue for the area for many years. Intermittent exploration was carried out until the 1960 1 s when Placer (PNG) Pty. Ltd. with Mt. Isa Mines commenced an extensive exploration program. The property was brought to production in 1990 by the Porgera Joint Venture group consisting of Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Rennison Goldfield Consolidated Ltd. and Placer Dome Inc, each with a 30% ownership and the Government of Papua New Guinea with a 10% share. Placer Dome Inc. is the manager of the property with construction under the direction of the Placer Dome Technical Services group."

It can improve productivity for the overall benefit of an operation. Organizations can therefore use training as a mean to achieve their specific goals. Training is not the solution to every performance problem. However, in many cases, it can be a very effective way to attain desired performance.The benefits of training are often difficult to assess. However, to remain competitive, organizations must introduce new products and innovative technologies. "Rare earth permanent magnets (REPM) have become virtually indispensible in hundreds of applications including aerospace, automotive, electronics, energy, medical and military. An understanding of REPMs is important since they are key drivers of demand for the overall rare earth sector. Rare earth permanent magnets stand out due to their superior magnetic properties of high induction and coercive force. We will discuss the past, current and future of the permanent magnet market and supply chain. We will summarize present and potential new nanocomposite and lower content or non rare earth magnet technologies and customer options which may mitigate rare earth usage.INTRODUCTIONRare earth permanent magnets are ubiquitous and often unseen critical components in many civilian, green energy and military technologies. They have become imbedded in applications such as hybrid electric vehicles, computer hard drives, direct-drive high power wind generators, audio speakers, motors, energy conversion systems, most weapons systems and hundreds of other uses. Several rare earth elements including neodymium, samarium, dysprosium, praseodymium, terbium and gadolinium are essential ingredients in production of the highest performance magnets available in the world today. They have enabled vast miniaturization and the significant increase in power density in hundreds of applications.China has become the dominant source of rare earth elements over the last two decades. Today, nearly 100 percent of the world’s rare earth metals and more than 95 percent of the rare earth oxides come from China. China’s near worldwide monopoly on the production of downstream materials such as rare earth oxides, metals and magnets severely impacts the supply chain in this growing global market. The past decade has seen an unmistakable trend toward increased dominance in raw material production and manufacturing by China, and a steep decline in U.S. production capabilities, most notably in the neodymium iron boron (Nd-Fe-B) market where there is currently no domestic production. This Chinese dominance is further demonstrated with over 65 percent of hard ferrite and roughly half of aluminum nickel cobalt (Alnico) and samarium cobalt (Sm-Co) production in that nation (Figure 1). In addition, China has imposed export quotas and export taxes of up to 25 percent for rare earth elements, arguably in violation of their covenants made with their protocol of accession to the Word Trade Organization. These export quotas have been decreasing steadily over the last several years in spite of rising global demand and were slashed by 72 percent in July 2010 (Bradsher, 2010) causing many recent news stories."

"Specific conditions of underground coal mines at great depth, such as high temperatures, high rates of methane inflow and natural ventilation pressure provide considerable challenges for the reliable design of appropriate mine ventilation systems. For decades coal mining in Germany has coped with these extreme circumstances. Based on these experiences appropriate software tools for simulating mine ventilation networks have been developed and continuously enhanced. This paper examines differences in the simulation results and underlying calculation methods of two software solutions. The analysis is based on the comparison of FlowNetTM and VentSim DesignTM (Version 5.1) regarding the accurate prediction of fluid mechanical quantities and their validation with real measurements. A special focus lies on exceptional ventilation scenarios typical for deep coal mines, like gas inflows, fire events and buoyancy effects. The purpose of the comparison is the future utilization of the experiences gained during mining at up to 1,500 m depth for state of the art ventilation design. INTRODUCTION Ventilation is an essential component of mine operations—as providing fresh air to workplaces, diluting and removing explosive, toxic or asphyxiating pollutants and assuring sufficient climate conditions. On the other hand, the costs of ventilation contribute to a large extend to the overall operating costs of a mine, as the share in the energy consumption of a mine may be in the range of 25–50% (Belle, 2008). Accordingly, proper design of ventilation systems has been a task since early times. Consequently software for modelling of ventilation networks has been developed in order to improve efficiency and accuracy of calculations (Maleki, 2018). Compressible flow has not been considered by initial ventilation modelling software tools. In Germany, the consideration of changes in airflow density—depending on pressure and temperature—in the algorithms of ventilation simulation software has been started in 1974 by Duepre & Hofbauer. This development had been continued by the Pruefstelle fuer Grubenbewetterung (Test Centre for Mine Ventilation) and resulted in the release of a computer ventilation software named “Wetter”. The mine inspectorate of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which supervises the major coal mining district in Germany, declared ventilation simulation based on compressible flow being “state of the art” in 1985 (Pollak, 1985). This pronouncement made allowance for assessing the consequences of underground fires and downtimes of main fans based on advanced software solutions."

INTRODUCTION Eighteen years ago about half a dozen experienced prospectors moved from northern Ontario to northwest Manitoba to prospect &apos;greenstone&apos; areas shown on geological maps of .parts of northern Manitoba prepared by J. B. Tyrrell, D. B. Dowling, and Wm. Mclnnes. Gold-bearing quartz was soon discovered by these men in this new field, and in succeeding years many more prospectors entered the district. A number of the pioneers are still prospecting, and since 1913 mineral deposits have been discovered each year in widely separated areas of the large district extending 150 miles eastward from the 102nd meridian and 60 miles north of latitude 54°30&apos;. The majority of the discoveries, however, have been made near Schist, Elbow, Wekusko, and Kississing lakes. One hundred or more mineral occurrences of some merit are known, the main types being sulphide replacement bodies containing nickel-copper or copper-zinc and gold-bearing quartz veins. Some underground exploration or diamond drilling has been completed on 25 or more of the prospects. Up to the present, three ore-bodies, namely, Flin Flon, Sherritt-Gordon, and Mandy, have been proved. Of these, Flin Flon, the largest, is estimated to contain from 16,000,000 o 19,000,000 tons of copper-zinc ore carrying some gold, silver, and lead. Next in importance in regard to tonnage is Sherritt-Gordon, with a calculated reserve of nearly 5,250,000 tons of copper-zinc ore carrying less than $1.00 combined gold and silver.

South East Asia, China, Eastern Europe and CIS are slowly becoming significant consumers of ferroniobium. As a result, the world niobium market has been stable despite the slowdown in steel production in 2001. This paper will describe present producers, capacities and the current market conditions.

"Serrana’s concentrator, in Araxii, has capacity of producing approximately 800,000 tomes of phosphate rock per year, with a P205 grade of 36%, from ores grading between 13% and 14% P205. The annual mining rate is around 3.5 Mt and the apatite is concentrated according to the following sequence: crushing, grinding, desliming, flotation and low and high intensity magnetic separations.Two industrial flotation columns (3.0 m x 4.5 m x 14.5 m) were commissioned in 1993 as a replacement for circuits of barite and apatite fines flotation. In 1994, four additional flotation columns of the same dimensions were put into operation, replacing 42 Wemco mechanical cells (300 ft3 each), in the barite pre-flotation, coarse apatite (two columns) and tailings regrind flotation Circuits. Overall, 66 mechanical cells (300 ft3 each) were replaced by only six flotation columns, designed by Cominco Engineering Services Ltd - CESL.The present paper describes the stages of process development, pilot plant testwork and implementation of the industrial project, highlighting the most relevant aspects of each of them. The results achieved are related to improvements in flotation selectivity, gains in P205 recovery and better process control, resulting in better quality products and lower production costs. Other benefits included a decrease in flotation reagents, electrical energy and maintenance materials consumption. These factors contributed to a significant decrease in the cost of phosphate rock production at Serrana, in Araxa - M G."

Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I come to you tonight distinctly as a physicist, not as a geologist or a mining man. My experience in applied geophysics has been short, and I do not doubt that many of you have a much larger acquaintance: with the subject than I have. A little over a year ago, the firm of Alderson, MacKay & Armstrong decided to investigate the possibility of developing a new method of electrical prospecting suitable to our northern Quebec and northern Ontario conditions, and asked me to take up the work. A preliminary survey of existing literature convinced me that the field of induction methods was most promising. I wish to give you some account of the work carried on last summer in the Rouyn district in this connection with the very able assistance of Mr. H. G. I. Watson. Geophysical methods of prospecting can be divided generally into four classes: magnetic, electrical, gravitational, and seismic. Each class depends on the existence of a definite property in which the valuable mineral to be discovered differs materially from the surrounding rocks. In the four classes, the property will be, respectively, magnetic permeability, electrical conductivity, density, and elasticity. By far the largest differences occur in the case of electrical conductivity, where it is not rare to find ratios of the order of several millions, or even billions, between ores, sulphide ores especially, and the surrounding rock. Hence the sensitiveness and delicacy of electrical methods. Of these four classes, only two, the electrical and the magnetic methods, have been put to extensive practical use in the discovery of metallic ores. The other two classes are important mainly in connection with oil detection.

Computational chemistry methods, such as density functional theory (DFT), are powerful tools to quantify reagent-mineral interactions encountered in sulphide mineral flotation. A quantitative relationship between theoretically calculated parameters based on chemical structure of collectors and their reactivity with different metals/minerals can provide valuable insights for design and development of more powerful and tailor-made reagents offering enhanced metal/mineral selectivity. DFT calculations at B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level were employed to elucidate the reactivity of neutral sulphide collector reagents, including thionocarbamates (TC), thioureas (TU), xanthogen-formates (XF), dialkyldithiocarbamates (DTC) and dialkyltrithiocarbonates (TTC) with different heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+) in solution. The extent of delocalization of lone pair electrons of heteroatoms (attached directly to C in C=S) over C=S group was found to be the dominant factor in determining the collector’s reactivity. Order of reactivity was established as: TU > TC > XF > DTC > TTC. All the collectors showed superior affinity towards copper followed by lead. Unidentate binding was observed through sulphur atom except for xanthogen-formate for which bidentate binding mode was observed. Effect of nature of substituent groups at N and/or O atom on reactivity of thionocarbamate and thiourea was also investigated. The results obtained through DFT calculations are consistent with the experimental data reported in literature.

"The Main zone of the Clarence Stream gold deposit is hosted by a shear zone adjacent to the Saint George batholith in southwestern New Brunswick. The mineralization history relates to progressive deformation in the shear zone and the intrusion of the Magaguadavic granodiorite.Of three phases of deformation that have affected the area (D1-D3), D1 is not observed in the Clarence Stream shear zone. Two suites of igneous rocks intrude the shear zone: post-D2, pre-D3 gabbro; and granitic dikes, which crosscut the gabbros. Granitic dikes show a diverse range of relationships to D3 features, from pre-syn-D3 mylonitic fabrics in transposed and highly deformed enclaves, to nondeformed and entirely discordant dikes (post-D3).A variety of veins occur within this shear zone. Zoisite-bearing and later, crosscutting epidote-bearing veins are preserved as relics in quartz-mylonites, and predate quartz veins that host gold mineralization. The epidote-bearing veins are associated with pseudotachylitic cataclasite dikes, consistent with transient brittle failure during ductile deformation.Deformation relates to right-lateral strike-slip motion across the shear zone, and subhorizontal and near-vertical stretching lineations imply transpression. A late (late- or post-D3) dip-slip phase of motion is also apparent, and cooling followed a metamorphic peak early in D2-D3 history. Deformation of the shear zone, and more localized transient brittle failure, provided the permeability for fluid movement and vein emplacement. This scenario is similar to the findings of other studies, in which geochemical, tracer isotopic, and age-dating (U/Pb, 40Ar/39Ar) results suggest that the adjacent Magaguadavic granodiorite provided heat and metals. L’historique de la mise en place de la minéralisation accorde un rôle important à la déformation progressive dans la zone de cisaillement et à la mise en place de la granodiorite de Magaguadavic.Des trois phases de déformation à avoir affecté la région (D1-D3), les effets de D1 ne sont pas observés dans la zone de cisaillement de Clarence Stream. Deux suites de roches ignées se sont mises en place dans cette zone de cisaillement : un gabbro post D2, pré-D3 et des dykes granitiques qui recoupent le gabbro. Les dykes granitiques montrent une grande diversité de relations avec les structures D3, allant de précoces à synchrones aux fabriques mylonitiques D3 dans des enclaves transportées et fortement déformées à des dykes complètement discordants et non déformés (post-D3).On note diverses veines dans cette zone de cisaillement. Des veines contenant de la zoisite ainsi que des veines d’épidote sécantes plus tardives, lesquelles sont préservées comme reliquats dans les mylonites à quartz et sont plus vieilles que les veines de quartz contenant la minéralisation aurifère. Les veines d’épidote sont associées à des dykes de catacalasite à texture de pseudotachylite, compatibles avec une rupture cassante épisodique durant la déformation ductile.La déformation résulte d’un mouvement décrochant dextre le long de la zone de cisaillement et les linéations d’étirement subhorizontales et quasi-verticales impliquent de la transpression. Une phase tardive (tardi- ou post-D3) de mouvement selon le pendage est aussi apparente, et le refroidissement succède à un pic métamorphique tôt dans l’histoire D2-D3. "The oil sands industry is still fairly young with the first viable oil sand operation having been started in Alberta in 1960. Since then numerous modifications and improvements have been tried and implemented. The current process makes use of high velocity pumping of oil sands slurry with hot water (hydrotransport) to achieve separation of bitumen from the sand.A number of the oil sands processes have been adapted from unit operations that are used in mineral processing, such as crushing, screening, flotation, cycloning and thickening. This paper outlines a typical oil sands process flowsheet and investigates the differences and similarities in technologies and costs to other mineral processing industries. It also considers the very large throughputs required, and presents some of the difficulties and challenges currently faced by the industry as a result of high demand for oil and environmental pressures.INTRODUCTIONOil sands (also known as tar sands) deposits are found throughout the world. The Athabasca Oil Sands deposit in Aberta is the largest of these. Oil sands consist of a mixture of crude bitumen (a semi-solid form of crude oil), silica sand, clay minerals, and water. The Intec Process is a generic process for the production of pure base metals and precious metals from sulphides concentrates derived from copper, nickel, zinc and lead ores. The development program for the Intec Process initially focussed on the treatment of copper concentrates, (the ?Intec Copper Process?), and more recently of zinc concentrates, (?the Intec Zinc Process?). Developed and proven in Sydney, Australia at a cost of US$15m over the last ten years, the Intec Copper Process is now ready for commercial application. The knowledge gained during the development of the Intec Copper Process has been applied to the Intec Zinc Process, which utilises the same basic chemistry to produce high purity zinc ingot from metallurgically complex zinc sulphide concentrates containing lead, copper, iron, silver and gold. The demonstrated ability of the Intec Zinc Process to treat low grade mixed zinc/lead/copper concentrates, including those with high iron and manganese levels, holds out the real prospect of overcoming major metallurgical hurdles that have long affected the zinc industry. The Intec Zinc Process consists of the three consecutive circuits of leaching, purification and electrowinning. The leach circuit is of single stage configuration with a series of reactors to which concentrate and lixiviant are fed. Purification consists of cementation and precipitation by pH adjustment. Electrowinning employs an electrolytic cell very similar in design to that of the Intec Copper Process, but differs in that a conventional plate cathode is produced. During electrowinning, the same mixed halide species (BrCl2 -, HalexTM) that is integral to the Intec Copper Process is generated in solution at the anode and exhibits powerful leaching characteristics capable of directly leaching the sulphide concentrate feed. The need to roast the concentrate prior to leaching, as is practised in the conventional Roast/Leach/Electrowin (RLE) process, is thus eliminated whilst a range of by-products (notably lead, copper and precious metals) can be extracted in the simple, single-stage leach. This paper describes the Intec Zinc Process; the technology, predicted economics and its environmental aspects.

"A study has been conducted to characterize the fatigue life in 7050-T7451 thick plate by the comparison between an experimental alloy and commercial alloy. The fracture origins were specified and their sizes were measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Additionally, the size, number density and spatial distribution of porosity in the experimental material and commercial material were characterized and compared, using X-ray Computed Tomography(XCT). The results showed that microporosity was the predominant site for crack nucleation and subsequent failure of the experimental alloy. However, as for the commercial alloy, fatigue cracks were found to originate from constituent particles. The presence of microporosity in 7050-T7451 thick plate reduced fatigue life of an order of magnitude or more compared to the commercial alloy. The relationships between size of origin and fatigue life were proposed. It was showed that the fatigue endurance was reduced when the size of porosity increased.INTRODUCTION 7xxx series aluminum alloys, due to their combination of high strength, high resistance to stress corrosion cracking, and good fracture toughness, are widely used in structural engineering applications where high-strength and low-density characteristics are fundamental design requirements (Williams& Starke, 2003). Every designer is striving to find an optimal combination of properties including strength, corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance (Wanget al., 2016). Based on the design principles of aircraft, a higher fatigue resistance of aluminum alloys are required. Thus, many investigations have been carried out on the microstructures and its effect on fatigue properties of the 7xxx series aluminum alloy (Robson, 2004; Schubbe, 2009).Microporosity, which is a common defect in casting materials, can lead to a significant deterioration of mechanical performance and fatigue resistance, especially in the high alloyed 7xxx aluminum alloys. The actual valid loading area decreases due to microporosity, which results in detrimental effect on the mechanical properties. Many experimental studies have been conducted in this research field. Mayer et al.(2003) investigated the fatigue properties of magnesium alloys produced by high-pressure die-casting. The results show that porosity in magnesium alloys greater than0.18mm diameter may be considered as the most important material defect for high cycle fatigue and fully reversed loading conditions. Nadot et al.(2004) found that the near surface defects are much more dangerous than the internal defects. Wang et al.(2001a) used the Weibull statistics method to analysis the influence of the microporosity, oxides and particles on the A356-T6 alloy fatigue life. The results show that, the porosity is more detrimental to fatigue life than oxide films and particles. With regard to fatigue resistance, although the deleterious effect of microporosity has been generally acknowledged, a quantitative understanding between casting microporosity and fatigue life in 7050-T7451 plate is not well established."

"A model for gold leaching was developed and implemented into a simulator. The simulator uses a description of the ore that is based on the mineral composition and precious metal content. The model accounts for the distribution of minerals and precious metals through the size intervals. An ore texture model based on precious metals and minerals grain sizes within the ore is used to predict the exposed surface of the species in the various size intervals. A model is proposed to predict the rate of dissolution of any species dissolution using the exposed surface, particle size, cyanide and oxygen concentrations, temperature, pH and agitation. The flow of slurry through a leaching tank is modelled using a parallel arrangement of perfect mixers to simulate a bypass and a Cholette-Cloutier mixer model. The simulator can be used for circuit optimization but was developed to provide an environment for learning the basic concepts of process analysis methods. Examples are given to illustrate the application of the simulator for planning tracer tests and sampling campaigns.INTRODUCTIONThe constant pressure to improve the operation of processes that are already close to optimum imposes to plant engineers to be aware of the available process analysis tools and to be able to use them to assess process operation and make a diagnosis to possible problems. Some of these tools are:•,Sampling the streams of a process;•,Data reconciliation;•,Analysis of mixing in reactors;•,Estimation of rate parameters;•,Optimal tuning and flow sheet modification;•,Automatic control and real time optimization.Although some of these tools are part of the curriculum of many university engineering programs, the students are not exposed to actual process analysis problems. In addition the complexity of the ore dressing processes compounded with unavoidable measurement errors and plant disturbances can discourage many motivated engineers. These factors often lead to an incomplete valorization of the collected data and a poor return on the investment associated with the sampling, testing and analysis of the samples.Simulators are readily available for process optimization (Yalcin and Shang, 2006) by allowing:•,The simulation of various flow sheet configurations;•,The simulation of a change of operating conditions;•,The simulation of various control strategies;•,The training of plant operators.However few simulators have been developed with the objective of providing an environment for training plant engineers and technicians to the use of tools for process analysis and optimisation."
