In 2009, the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) became aware that Canadian securities regulators were amending the contents of National Instrument 43-101. NI 43-101 is a set of regulations which establish how ore resources and reserves are presented to the investing public. The documents produced under NI 43-101 are central to the ability of many companies to raise financing for their projects. With the increase of metallurgical complexity, and decrease of head grades encountered in new deposits, the role of the Qualified Person (QP) in determining process performance has become increasingly critical in determining the classification category of resources and reserves. Given the challenges confronted by those involved in defining the concentration and extraction of minerals and metals, there is a need to provide support to these QPs. To address these concerns, the CMP established a sub-committee in 2010 to create a set of guideline documents to assist the QP involved in process matters as to what should be included at the various levels of study supporting the establishment of resources and reserves in NI 43- 101. The results of the sub-committee work are presented and the considerations in the writing of the documents are discussed.

Most authorities agree that the dissolution of gold from an ore takes place according to the Elsner equation first stated in 1846. The main requirements for the dissolution reaction to proceed are:(1) that the gold be clean.(2) that the gold be exposed to the solution.(3) that the cyanide solution be active, i.e., not over loaded with impurities which could retard or inhibit the reaction.(4) that an adequate supply of oxygen be available (from air).When the above conditions are met, cyanidation becomes basically a mechanical operation.Minerals such as quartz, calcium carbonate are relatively inert to cyanide though they may give rise to mechanical troubles. Most ores present an assortment of chemical problems, depending upon the constituent present, which react to the solution to varying degrees. It should be borne in mind that minerals which are disturbing to the operation, though present in small amounts, usually exceed the weight of the gold by several hundred times. In addition, the application of flotation and other forms of concentration to gold ores, previous to cyanidation, concentrates not only the gold, but also the other heavy minerals and these complicate the chemistry of the process.

IT IS almost exactly fifteen years since the discovery of the Leduc oil field and, as this luncheon is part of the Thirteenth Annual Technical Meeting of the Institute's Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, it seems, therefore, a singularly appropriate time to discuss the theme which the program committee has suggested for the occasion -the progress of the Canadian oil industry during the fifteen years since the discovery of the Leduc field. As you will see, I plan to take a few minor liberties with this suggested theme. I shall present ample evidence of growth and progress, but, at the same time, I want to refer to some areas where progress has been anything but conspicuous and to see what can be learned from these areas for the future. The achievements of the Canadian oil industry since the Leduc discovery in 1947 have been substantial, and the public is relatively familiar with the more spectacular developments.

Abstract -The Selebi-Phikwe deposits are hosted by amphibolite to granulite facies gneisses of the Limpopo belt. The sulfide orebodies are generally stratiform and conformable to the foliation of the wallrock gneiss. Sulfide remobilization has occurred during metamorphism and has produced discordant sulfide veins, called piercement structures, which project into the hanging wall and foot­ wall gneisses. These piercement structures are compositionally similar to the stratiform sulfides, consisting mainly of pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite. However, texturally the piercement sulfides are coarse grained and inclusion-free, whereas the stratiform sulfides are fine grained and packed with tectonically produced wallrock inclusions. The piercement structure sulfides and adjacent stratabound sulfides were sampled and analyzed for major base metals and PGE's for comparative purposes. Most of the piercement structures were enriched in Cu, Ag and Au, whereas they were generally depleted in Ni, Co, Fe and PGE's. Changing elemental associations were observed from the stratabound sulfides and along the length of the piercement structures. This and the degree of depletion or enrichment of various major and minor elements in the sulfide piercement structures may reflect the relative mobilities of metals under metamorphic conditions. The similarities between sulfide piercement structures and the footwall Cu-POE veins in some Sudbury deposits are reviewed.

"Froth flotation is widely used to selectively separate one or more minerals from an ore over a wide range of particle sizes with high efficiency. Bubble–particle attachment is one of the most critical steps in flotation. The objective of this project is to demonstrate the need for an innovative dual bubble generator to improve flotation efficiency. This dual bubble generator was designed to generate two different sizes (micron size and typical flotation size) bubbles. The micron size bubbles generated on the crevices of particle surfaces in venturi type of cavitation tubes enhanced the attachment of fine particles to the bubbles in conventional flotation systems. They also acted as a secondary collector, which has the potential to reduce operation cost and improve flotation recovery. The dual bubble generator was evaluated for a double refractory gold ore with 3g/t Au, 1.5 wt% TCM (total carbonaceous matter) and 0.7 wt% sulfides. The results were compared with those obtained using a commercial bubble generator. Compared with the commercial bubble generator, the dual bubble generator showed not only a higher gold recovery, but also an improved separation efficiency, demonstrating the potential of dual bubble generator in fine particle flotation.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation has been widely used in mineral processing and waste water treatment. However, flotation has been proven inefficient for fine particle recovery although it becomes increasingly inevitable to process fine particles with the depletion of easy processing ores. The critical problem of fine particle flotation is the low attachment of fine particles to flotation size bubbles due to their low collision rate. Based on a commonly acceptable flotation model given by R =F*[Pc*Pa*(1-Pd)], the probability of bubble–particle collision (Pc), attachment (Pa) and particles detachment from air bubbles (Pd) collectively determines fine particle recovery (R) (Yoon and Luttrell, 1986). Since Pc = (3Dp/Db) where Dp and Db are diameters of particles and bubbles, respectively, bubble size and particle size impact the bubble-particle collision in opposite directions. It is evident that the probability of bubble–particle collision decreases with decreasing the size of particles, leading to a low recovery of fine particles. In this case, reducing the bubble size and/or increasing the apparent size of particles by fine particle aggregation are clear means to improve fine particle recovery."

This paper studies two methods that account for risks associated with gold mining projects such as mineral risks and country risks. The first method is sensitivity analysis, which investigates the effects of a change in any economic parameter such as operating cost, capital investment, gold price or taxes on the viability of the project. The second method is Monte Carlo Simulation technique, which takes into consideration the simultaneous random variation of the economic parameters on the project's viability. An automated simulation cash flow model has been developed as part of this paper. Sensitivity analysis and the simulation model have been used to investigate the economic viability of the Dokrupe Gold Project (DGP) serving as a test case. It is concluded that, the Monte Carlo Simulation technique gives a more realistic judgement of the economic viability of gold mining projects.

SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) is an in-situ oil recovery technique for heavy oil reservoirs. The technique has been successfully applied to many projects in the past 25 years and the process has been, now, well understood. It is now believed that geomechanics plays an important role in SAGD and should be considered in numerical or analytical modeling. Currently, geomechanics is numerically modeled through combining a multi-phase flow and a geomechanical simulator. Numerical modeling is, however, time consuming, need lots of input data, and could not be used for quick decision-making purposes. To decrease the modeling time, this study based on a new version of the Reis drainage model, proposes coupled mathematical model and reserves the effect of geomechanics in the process. Results showed a perfect match with the past experimental and numerical data.

The hot deformation behavior of Pure Mg and Mg-0.29Ce alloy were studied by isothermal hot compression tests in the temperature range of 250 - 500°C and strain rate range of 10-3 - 102 s-1 in a computer-controlled 50kN servo hydraulic universal testing machine (UTM). The results show that the flow stress of Mg pure and Mg-0.29Ce alloy increases with strain rate and decreases after a peak value, indicating dynamic recovery and recrystallization. Process efficiency was increased by nearly 10 to 12% by addition of Ce in Mg. Mg pure exhibits instability zones between 250-275°C at 10 ? 102 s-1 and 400¬500°C at 101 ? 102 s-1 temperatures and strain rates respectively, rest is the safe deformation zone. Wherein, Mg-0.29 Ce exhibits two low efficiency zones from 250 ? 300°C at 10-2? 10° s-1, 400 ? 500°C at 101 ? 102s-1 and high efficiency zone at 450 ? 500°C at 10-3? 10-1s-1. 4D process maps were generated for the above said alloys which illustrate contours of power dissipation and instability in the 3D space of strain rate, temperature and strain.

"Reconnaissance geochemical mapping, based on the chemical analysis of waters, stream, and / or lake sediments had its origin in geochemical prospecting surveys carried out in New Brunswick during the 1950s. More recently, reconnaissance geochemical surveys carried out by government agencies for mineral resource appraisal purposes have been seen as a special case of regional geochemical mapping which is carried out with the aim of describing geochemical patterns f or elements which may he interpreted for mineral resource appraisal, environmental or geological purposes. The interpretation of pal/ ems on regional geochemical maps is based on the concepts of landscape geochemistry, in this paper, the regional approach 10 geochemical mapping is described with reference to an experimental regional geochemical survey which was completed in southwest Ontario during 1981-82. "The La Corne molybdenite-bearing veins, discovered in 1915, lie halfway between Amos and Val d'Or near the southwest corner of La Corne township, Abitibi county, Quebec. The Molybdenite Reduction Company, which carried on operations during 1927 to 1930, sank a 200-foot inclined shaft to develop the property and produced about 22 tons of concentrntes from a 30-ton mill during 1929. Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, carried on further underground exploration in 1930. The Molybdenite Corporation of Canada drilled a part of the property in 1938 to 1939 and produced 1 ton of concentrates in 1938. Wartime Metals operated the property from 1942 to July 15, 1945. At this time the mill was enlarged to treat 200 tons daily. Molybdenite Corporation of Canada since July 15th, 1945, have continued the operation of this property and have revised the mill flow-sheet in order to produce both a bismuth and a molybdenite concentrate.The production for the period 1942-1946 is as follows:Total molybdenite production from the mine in the 1942 to 1946 period was about 4,127,400 lb.The La Corne deposit occurs at the northwest contact of a small mass of biotite granite with biotite schist. The form and extent of the biotite granite mass is concealed by a wide sand plain that extends northwest and west from the deposit and overlies bed-rock except in four small outcrop areas. These are spaced 1,000 and 2,000 feet apart along a narrow strip extending 5,000 feet south from the mine. The outcrops suggest that the granite must be at least 1,500 feet wide and 3,000 feet long northeastward. Where exposed in the mine workings the contact dips 70°N.W., but is not a sharply defineable feature due to the presence of numerous granite dykes and tongues in a zone of biotite schist 100 feet wide along the margin of the granite. The biotite schist in the few outcrops that flank the north and south sides of the granite strikes northeast and dips 60° to 70° S.E."

"A pilot-scale flotation column was used to evaluate four polyglycol frothers at Teck’s Highland Valley Copper Mine. The column was fed with flotation plant feed from the grinding circuit cyclone overflow. Frother dosage was changed by controlled addition to the column feed. Pulp, froth and metallurgical performance were assessed using gas dispersion measurements, water recovery and copper, molybdenum and gangue grades and recoveries. Ranking the frothers based on pulp and froth phase performance using gas dispersion measurements and water recovery yielded contradictory rankings. All of the frothers changed the froth structure in a similar manner such that, at the same structural conditions, they all gave the same degree of separation between water and entrained solids. The only difference between the frothers was what dosage was required to achieve a certain structure. Changes in pulp structure appeared to be related to the critical coalescence concentration (CCC) for each frother. Changes in froth structure were not completely described by the CCC and involved other factors, such as the hydrophobicity of particles in the froth. All of the frothers were capable of achieving the same metallurgical result, just at different dosages. Optimal dosages for the frothers were anywhere from the CCC, where copper and molybdenum grades were maximised, to 2 to 3 or 4 to 7 times the CCC, where copper and molybdenum recoveries, respectively, were maximised.INTRODUCTION Background Due to supply issues, Teck’s Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Mine replaced Dowfroth 250C, their auxiliary frother, with Huntsman Polyfroth W31. The primary criterion for selection was that the new frother gave the same performance as Dowfroth 250C, minimising disruption to the circuit. Frothers play a dual role in flotation, altering the bubble size in the pulp zone and the stability of the froth. A stronger or weaker frother, or a blend of both, will alter the balance between pulp and froth effects and, ultimately, metallurgy. Dowfroth 250C and Polyfroth W31 may not necessarily be the best frothers for HVC from a metallurgical standpoint. There may be a different frother or frother blend that could deliver higher recovery in the bulk roughers."

"Xstrata Nickel’s Raglan operation, northern Québec, achieved paymetal recovery gains in 2007 by switching the collector from potassium amyl xanthate to sodium isobutyl xanthate. To follow on from that position, Xstrata Process Support (XPS) and A. Di Feo of Raglan proposed that a mixed xanthate system be formulated and tested towards further performance gains. This work selected ethyl and isobutyl xanthates as the candidates. An optimized ratio of these was to be determined by a designed experiment. This suggestion was based on an abundance of published literature that reported mixed collector systems outperformed single ones. A partial factorial design was used to configure four test conditions and a mid-square for the flotation work. The testwork was conducted using High Confidence Flotation Testing. The raw data were analyzed and modelled by Design-Expert software. An optimum ratio of 1.6:1.0 by mass (1.32:1.0 in molar terms) of isobutyl:ethyl xanthate was determined. Without this modelling, the optimum ratio would have been missed. Results obtained with the new baseline flotation test using this optimized mixture showed a 3.3% Ni recovery gain in the bypass concentrate and more than 1% recovery gain for PGM over the single PIBX system. This system has been proposed for and accepted as a plant scale trial in the first half of 2010.INTRODUCTIONConcentrator OperationsMilling and flotation of sulphide ores ahead of smelting and refining is a common practice. The steel industry is producing about 5% of the world wide CO2 emission. Therefore the European steel industry has defined a research program to reduce the CO2 emission by 50% per ton: ULCOS. Since its start in 2004 ULCOS has identified four technologies for further development. Two of these technologies which produce liquid hot metal are discussed. The ULCOS blast furnace is based on recycling of decarbonated topgas and the capture and storage of CO2. The concept has been demonstrated during three campaigns at LKAB EBF in Luleå, Sweden. The smelting reduction process HIsarna is a combination of the cyclone-technology and Hismelt. The process has been demonstrated successfully in four campaigns at a pilot installation on the IJmuiden steelmaking site.

Mining has looked to utilize onboard data systems in our mobile mining fleets to compliment these processes. Combining the two concepts build the concept that Rio Tinto refers to as asset health. These programs can generate a cost shift between $20,000 and $100,000 per piece of equipment annually. Even with the documented savings many operations struggle to justify the systems, why?

"Since 1994, Aur Ressources has operated Louvicourt mine, a zinc and copper mine close to Val d’Or, at a rate of 4300 t/d. Ever since the start-up of the plant, management has encouraged innovative approaches in reliability. The first of three papers will discuss the vibration monitoring program in place. The program will be described and two examples will be given: detection of a rolling bearing defect on a pinion driving the ball mill and identification of wear on the bearings of the flotation cells. Figures on the return on investment and the costs of a monitoring program will also be given.The second article will discuss the lubrication aspect. Since the establishment of a good monitoring and oil analyses, Louvicourt mine decreased its oil consumption by more than 38 000 L/yr. In addition, the company set up an oil regeneration system that restores the original properties of oil.The third article will cover the management aspect. Work organization as well as the management philosophy enabling the employes to push predictive technology to higher levels will be examined in detail. The key elements which made it possible for Louvicourt mine to position itself among world-class companies in the organization of maintenance will be discussed."

Introduction Although gold production in British Columbia began in 1859, lode gold was not produced till 1893. Since 1900, the annual production of lode gold has fluctuated between $3,000,000 and $6,000,000. About twenty per cent of this production may be regarded as by-product gold from base metal mining. The remainder comes from a few isolated but important mines, such as the Rossland mines, Nickel Plate, Surf Inlet, Premier, Pioneer, Bralorne, Reno, and Cariboo Gold Quartz, and from several less important mines. All of the above, except Pioneer, Bralorne, Reno, and Cariboo, are approaching or have reached the point of exhaustion, but all are now receiving, under the stimulus of the. present gold-mining boom, drastic resuscitative treatment, with, in some cases, signs of resurrection. Notwithstanding this, however, the main interest at the present time is focussed on the Bridge River and Cariboo fields. Both these fields were discovered in the early 'sixties' and, apart from the Cariboo placer production, both have from time to time contributed small amounts of lode gold; but it is only during the last two years that the real possibilities of these areas were discovered. and that they began to assume the appearance of goldfields of major importance. The two fields are sorme three hundred miles distant from one another and contain deposits of distinctly different types, so that the only reason for including them in one article is the fact that they came into prominence more or less simultaneously and at a time coinciding with, but not otherwise related to, the present gold-mining boom.

In a radio frequency and optoelectoronic device packaging, Gold-Tin (Au-20 wt% Sn eutectic) solder is used widely due to the excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, high strength, and negligible creep characteristic under repetitive thermal cycling. With the recent lead-free movement, Gold-Tin solder is recognized as an alternative material for high temperature Lead-Tin solder. Generally, Gold-Tin solder is supplied in the forms such as ribbons, pellets, and ring frames. However, these forms must be set-up accurately on the joint area to press chips in bonding, therefore, it is difficult for these forms to satisfy the recent requirements for the down sizing in the connection areas. On the other hand, Au-20 wt% Sn solder paste can be applied flexibly to various supplying methods, such as printing, dispensing system and pin transcript. These methods also make it possible to reduce the production cost. However, in the case of using the solder paste, the void issue is one of the most undesirable problems. The void causes the degradation of the characteristics such as the bond strength, electrical characteristic and thermal conductivity. We have been intensifying the development of the void free paste, and have achieved void reduction by optimizing the powder size, the flux composition and the reflow condition.
