The Golden Blocks Goldfield is located in the Slaty Creek area,North West Nelson, about 20 km west of Collingwood. Alluvial gold was discovered in Slaty Creek in 1861. Gold was mined from quartz veins up to 1.5 m thick at nine mines from the 1890s until the closure of the Aorangi Mine in 1911. Total production from the Golden Blocks Goldfield is estimated at 46 000 ounces of gold. The Aorangi Mine was the largest mine, with a recorded production of 27 978 ounces of gold at an average grade of 36 g/t. Quartz veins containing gold and sparse sulphide mineralisation occur in a slightly metamorphosed, complexly deformed over-turned sequence of Lower Ordovician sandstones and shales. Primary gold mineralisation is associated with intensely deformed zones that occur near or at carbonaceous shale and sandstone contacts. Some eighty-five percent of all gold production (39 000 ounces) came from four mines confined to the stratigraphically lowest, most widespread shale unit. The quartz veins exhibit textures consistent with a hydraulic fracturing mode of vein formation with fissure infill vein types predominating over replacement textures. Stylolites of carbonaceous material and recrystallization features within the veins suggest multiple phases of deformation. The lack of wall rock alteration, and low primary fluid inclusion temperatures of 200¦ - 265¦ indicate that the ore fluids were associated with a low temperature epithermal system. A model consistent with similar mineralisation styles observed in Ordovician sediments from Pacific Rim occurrences is presented. The high grades (up to 100 g/t) mined from the upper levels of several mines suggests supergene enrichment processes associated with the Upper Cretaceous weathering surface. The Golden Blocks Goldfield has had no modern exploration. The most recent exploration was undertaken in the early 1980s. There are known acid intrusives in the area, with potential for the application of new models of intrusive-related gold mineralisation.

It is commonly known that copper smelter terms include penalties if the concentrations of elements, such as arsenic, mercury and fluorine, exceed stipulated limits. It is less commonly known that the behaviour of these elements in the smelters can depend on the processes used to treat the concentrate. The principle behind the penalties is to compensate the smelters and refineries for additional costs caused by the presence of the penalty elements, but these costs will vary depending on the process used and the location of the smelter.The issues caused by the minor elements include effects on the occupational health of smelter workers, increased environmental disposal costs, increased operating costs and reduced cathode copper quality.The effects of minor elements can be surprising. High levels of arsenic in concentrate are considered undesirable, but some smelters add arsenic to anode copper to improve the performance of the refinery.Excess concentrations of some elements will result in rejection of concentrates by smelters. China has blanket import bans on copper concentrates with concentrations of lead, arsenic cadmium, fluorine and mercury exceeding specified levels.This paper will review the behaviour of minor elements in smelters and refineries, explaining the deleterious effects of each of them, to provide a greater understanding for people and organisations wishing to market copper concentrates.CITATION:Fountain, C, 2013. An explosion occurred at Moura No. 4 underground coal mine in Queensland on 16 July 1986 and resulted in the loss of 12 lives. The official report of the accident concluded that the most likely source of ignition was the flame safety lamp. This paper describes an investigation of the behaviour of a flame safety lamp, similar to the one involved in the Moura explosion in atmospheres of methane, coal dust and air, carried out at the Queensland Department of Mines . Testing and Research Station. The behaviour of the lamp is described in conditions of varying methane and coal dust concentrations in air, and varying air velocity. Particular emphasis is given to the 'phenomenon of burning which occurs inside the gauze and which is capable of causing the ignition of an external explosive atmosphere.

Braeside Borefield, located 120 km southwest of Mackay, is owned by BHP Mitsui Coal Pty Ltd (BHP Mitsui). The borefield provides water to BHP MitsuiÆs South Walker Creek and Riverside Coal Mines and communities in the northern portion of the Bowen Basin. Braeside Borefield has also provided water for other users in the region, including the Peak Downs, Goonyella and Saraji Coal Mines owned by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA). Water is sourced from alluvial sediments at the confluence of Nebo and Denison Creeks, and transferred a distance of almost 100 km to Riverside Mine and other users. Since commissioning in 1983, monitoring and maintenance programs have been key elements in borefield management. The impact of pumping on groundwater resources is monitored at the borefield, upstream and downstream over a distance of about 50 km. Current annual pumping is of the order of 4000 ML, and in excess of 50 000 ML has been pumped since the commencement of borefield operations. Detailed reviews of borefield performance are conducted every two years. BHP Mitsui actively participates in community consultation on groundwater issues arising from operation of the borefield. Declining groundwater levels from prolonged drought conditions have increased community interest in management of the borefield. Rehabilitation of existing production bores and augmentation of the borefield is currently being investigated to more evenly distribute pumping rather than to increase overall capacity.

External pressures are being exerted on busi- ness, and especially the mining and energy in- dustries, as never before. These pressures are burdensome, they emerge in unique forms, and they constitute an entirely new operating environ- ment for business. They pose one of the signi- ficant challenges to senior management today. To cope with these pressures-which we have termed the new public realities-we must deal more effectively with the media, the public, and government. However, before examining methods for improvement, it is essential to understand the nature of these new public realities and par- ticularly their determinants-the underlying eco- nomic, sociological, political, and international events and trends which have shaped them. Previously the productive element of society had only to concern itself with what might be termed `conventional realities' : the costs of labour, equipment, and land, as well as marketing and distribution factors.

Every step on the path from the mine to the smelter invites a comparison between material inputs on one side and outputs plus accumulation on the other. Or put simply, between what you think you have produced with what you find you have at hand. The discrepancy between these sets of comparisons is the error. Following that error in a systematic and objective manner is a way to improve the mineÆs measurement systems, that in turn leads to more accurate accounting for ores, metals and concentrates. Because the control of production is so tightly coupled with the accounting of materials, any lasting improvements in materials accounting will benefit the predictions of materials movements and quality. This translates to more reliable planning and scheduling in stockpile management, logistics, shipping and marketing. The statistical tools described are direct adaptations from the long-standing methods used to maintain the quality of manufactured product in the discrete parts industries. Their use in the process industries, of which mining is one, requires some care owing to the continuous nature of ore extraction and its variable properties. The tools can be used for problem diagnostics and as early warning systems. In common practice many professional staff, in attempting to get a perfect reconciliation between expected and observed results, try to explain away the error or bury it completely. The methodology advocated here requires a different mindset because the error must be given pre-eminence for lasting improvement to be realised.

Vatukoula is a gold mining township situated at the south-west periphery of a Tertiary caldera which measures 3 miles by 4 miles. Erosion of the caldera resulted in the formation of a topographic depression, called the Tavua basin, covering about 30 square miles. This area, also known as the Tavua Goldfield, has been the site for spasmodic prospecting since the initial discovery of gold in 1932.The mineralization at Vatukoula is typically epithermal with the gold occurring as tellurides, auriferous sulphides, and to a much less extent as native gold. The lodes are confined to three major structures i.e. north-west shears, flatly dipping structures (flat makes), and local shatter orebodies.Within these structures, at least five types of controls are recognized to account for the localization of the oreshoots. The dominant control is structure.The lode structures are related to the overall structural pattern of the Tavua basin. This pattern, which is controlled by the collapse planes of the caldera and a north-west shear system, produced a "shatter block" atVatukoula and elsewhere around the caldera.Structural analysis indicates there are certain areas in the Tavua basin where exploration could be rewarded by the discovery of orebodies with similar controls to those of the productive Vatukoula block.

The mining industry maintains a ælove-hateÆ relationship with water. Dewatering, aquifer, water disposal, irrigation, process water, tailings water, run-off water, seepage, leachate and sumps are all terms that are used on a daily basis in the mining industry, highlighting the numerous water usages on site and their associated quality. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2001), each year the mining industry consumes over 530 000 ML of water. The increasing recognition of water as a limited and valuable commodity, and the associated environmental concerns with the management of water disposal to the environment has led the industry into improving on-site water management. Progressively, water balance models and water reuse strategies are being developed, incorporating more sophisticated water treatment processes. By way of example, membrane technologies, once restricted to industries such as the pharmaceutical industry or the drinking water industry, are now entering the mining world with the aim of producing clean water of suitable quality for ore processing or for advanced treatment prior to release to the environment. This paper will provide a review of the threats and opportunities linked to water use and recovery/reuse in the mining industry in Australia. It will open with an overview of current water usage and associated quality for various mineral industries and continue with identifying the threats and limitations associated with the quality of available water. It will then present how newly developed water treatment technologies and assessment tools can be incorporated into the system to enhance the recovery and reuse of water on site, reduce the risks associated with securing long-term water supply and further improve production, environment and safety (health risk control).

Planning and design of new facilities for disposal of tailing after 1985 which includes new tailing dams (Site D) commenced during 1980. Long before a modern mine commences operations it has already become a wealth of information. After start up, it can generate enormous quantities of data û especially with semi-automated data acquisition by instrumented mine equipment. However, much of this data is of limited use for evaluation of (potential) performance unless it links in some way to the site business model. An underlying reason for this waste of data is that the different cultures, financial, technical, community, environmental, etc not only have many areas of interest but also have very different conceptual models by which they evaluate performance. It is too ambitious to attempt to bring all of these cultures together û in a single step. However, the success of the Mine to MillTM project has demonstrated that substantial operational value can be added by using a more integrated approach to comminution. The next logical step is to integrate measurement and then to track performance from orebody model to saleable product and waste disposal. From resource to product also represents a path from very sparse, highly variable data to much more detailed measurement and more representative sampling. However, in both cases the data collected is strongly focused on the technical requirements û not on the business model. This paper considers how to define at least some of the key decision points in terms of some case studies. Performance data from many areas might be used to derive simple models which can then be used for forecasting and optimisation of planning.

Natural leaching of minerals has been recorded for some two millenia but surprisingly only in recent years has enough been known of the process for any serious design to be made. Copper has been recovered from natural mine waters since about the 17th century but again little progress was made in de- sign procedures until recently. Natural or dump leaching was started as a recovery process late in the 19th century and in the years up to the classic study of Taylor and Whelan in 1943 a series of impirical optimis- ations made it a valuable process for treating low grade or waste material. The biological nature of Sulphide leaching was proven by Colmer and Hinkle in 1947 and since then a large mass of data has accumulated on the microbiology, biochemistry, and response of ores to this form of attack. In spite of this knowledge and the vast amount of pract- ical experience available there are few recorded attempts to present methods of calculation or design procedures that can be used for setting up a leaching process. A framework is given here on which such procedures can be based and indications given of the inherent advantages and limitations of the process,

A large amount of wastes from the preparation plant is produced. The properties of these wastes vary depending on the mineralogical contents of the mother rock in which the coal is embedded. The waste quality depends on the method of mining and cleaning. The waste mainly consists of clays, quartz, carbonaceous materials, mica, pyrites and so on. About 55 per cent of coal-ash is now utilised and the remains are disposed of at the disposal sites, however, the life of the disposal site is limited. Moreover, it is difficult to find new disposal sites. Therefore, it is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the coal-ash be increased in every field in Japan. So, it is very much available if the injection material for natural/artificial openings can be applied on the cement that is added to flyash. Among the man-made pozzolans, a flyash is probably the most successful component used in grout injection. When flyash is added to Portland cement concrete, the same kinds of oxides as those of the cement are being added. As an injection component, flyash acts, in part, as a fine aggregate and, in part, as a binding component. However, there is not a substantial alteration of the properties of the original component. From these points of view, in order to clarify to what degree the flyash content affects the properties of the injected grout mixture; different combinations of flyash, Portland cement and water were considered by means of several experiments.

Recent advances in global positioning systems (GPS), machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50 mm. Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining û even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste; tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine; real time productivity monitoring; detailed post accident safety analysis; and tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.

Since the introduction of the Neil George Five Point Safety System, to the underground sections of The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines in March, 1969, the Disabling Injury Frequency Rate has been halved and shows signs of contin- uing to fall. The total accident frequency rate has also fallen, although the decrease has not been as significant. Before the introduction of the Neil George Safety System, analyses of the direct causes of accidents showed that approx- imately 25 per cent were caused by "unsafe conditions", while 75 per cent were attribu- table to "unsafe acts". Within twelve months of introducing the system, these percentages had significantly changed to 7 per cent unsafe conditions and 93 per cent unsafe acts. Today, the figures are 3 per cent and 97 per cent respectively, and these figures clearly show that the main emphasis in the current programme must be directed towards making the operating men safety conscious. The effort must be focused on changing the minds of men.

Experimentation with new methods, materials and machines to improve primary drilling and blasting is a continuing practice in the hard rock quarry operations of the BMI Group. These experiments will continue in the remote hope that one day we may produce a perfect feed for the primary crusher. As this day is still a long way off, the necessity to break oversize boulders will be a problem to be faced for the foreseeable future. To gauge the efficiency of primary blasting from this point of view, BMI monitor the tonnes of material crushed in the primary crusher for each boulder requiring secondary breaking. Over a period of about 10 years, this figure has improved from 30 tonnes througi the primary crusher per boulder, to 100 tonnes per boulder at our largest operation, which produces in excess of 2 million tonnes per year. Evan with this improvement, 25,000 boulders require secondary breaking each year This paper does not provide the solution to this problem, as like primary blasting, it will have to be constantly reviewed as new products and techniques become available. In a previous paper in these Proceedings(l) it was shown from a study of the bore'logs and analyses then available, that the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley areas show progressive changes in composition with increase of stratigraphic depth, equivalent to a rise in rank: These changes appear as:(i) An increase in ultimate carbon and hydrogen, calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, and(ii) An increase in calorific value, calculated on the, same basis, each of the order of 1% per 100 ft. of depth, and(iii) A decrease in moisture content of the order of 0.5% to 1.0% per 100 ft. of depth. The decrease in moisture content was found to be less regular than the other changes. In some bores the moisture content remained more or less constant throughout a single seam, or fluctuated slightly, decreasing stepwise on passage to the seam below.It was noted that individual analyses within a bore showed irregular fluctuations, tending to mask the general trend in composition change. This was particularly so for the moisture content, which had been determined for 10 ft. lengths of core, whereas the other components were determined for 50 ft. lengths of core. Averaging of the moisture contents over 50 ft. lengths reduced the masking effects of these irregularities. The suggestion was made that these irregularities arose from variations in the relative proportions of pollen, resin, wood (lignite) and woody attritus composing the core. Significant improvements in the metallurgical performance at Pasminco Rosebery Mine have occurred over the last two years. Lead and silver recoveries have increased by more than ten per cent, lead concentrate grades are four per cent higher, zinc recoveries are up 1.5 per cent, and zinc concentrate grades have increased by two per cent. These impressive results have not occurred through the application of some new wonder reagent, but through the application of some fundamental metallurgical principals. The basic premise applied during this study was that to make an effective separation you must first achieve liberation. Therefore, the laboratory and plant studies examined the liberation characteristics within the lead circuit, and the impact of regrinding. The work demonstrated clearly that galena/sphalerite liberation was poor, and significantly impaired plant performance. Further, it was suggested that the application of lead regrinding of the lead scavenger concentrate and the lead first cleaner tailing would not only benefit lead metallurgy, but also improve sphalerite flotation. A similar approach was then applied to the zinc circuit. From these studies, solutions applying simple circuit changes utilising existing equipment were proposed and implemented. Further to the improvements in galena/sphalerite liberation, significant improvements in concentrate quality were achieved by reducing variation within the process. The implementation of changes in work practices negotiated in the Enterprise Agreement, employee contributions and specialist training also made a significant contribution to the unprecedented improvement in the lead and zinc flotation circuit performance. The results of these plant changes are discussed, along with the suggested scope for further improvement.

The issue of fine coal and tailings dewatering has become of increasing concern to many coal preparation operators, both in Australia and overseas due to a variety of factors. Increasing mechanisation and mining of thinner seams over the past decades has resulted in an increasing amount of fines generation while increasing international trade in coal and tighter environmental constraints on tailings disposal have resulted in the production of these same fines to be an increasing problem. However, technology to date has not always been able to supply a cost-effective solution to the handling of these fines in an efficient and environmentally benign manner. This paper will review the key issues associated with the dewatering of fine coal and tailings, will describe the major current practices and constraints, and finally will indicate alternative technologies that may have to be considered in the near future. For the purpose of this paper, "fine" coal is described as that material less than 0.5 mm in diameter (as this is the most common cutpoint between various plant circuits in Australian practice), although the technological constraints are very much dependent upon the fraction less than 45 micron. The amount of minus 0.5 mm material fed to plants varies, depending upon the type of coal and mining operation, but in Australia may range from less than ten per cent to greater than 30 per cent of the feed in higher rank coals.

An efficient stores organisation is essential for an efficient undertaking. Unless the stores organisation is able to meet the requirements of its requisitioners promptly and economically, the undertaking as a whole cannot function efficiently.Delays or errors in supply of material, or substitution due to lack of material availability from the stores are costly and must be eliminated. This then makes the objective of a store, to supply on demand at the cheapest possible price, those items of stock which it is organised to carry, also to procure as quickly as possible and at the lowest price those special items required which are not normally carried in stock. To do this it is necessary to set up a stores organisation consistent with the size and requirements of the undertaking. Stores organisations vary with the nature of the undertaking they are designed to serve. In the case of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., an organisation has been established to meet the operating and maintenance requirements of the Port Pirie Works. These embrace the particularly wide range 0:1; activities associated with roasting" blast furnacing and refining the lead concentrates from the Broken Hill Mines in a continuous metallurgical process producing a variety of refined metals; also many associated activities including power production and engineering maintenance and construction.

Operational and economic imperatives in the metallurgical industry have led to numerous advancements in furnace design. Modern furnaces provide high production rates, high percentage online time, long campaign life between rebuilds and safe operating conditions. Current trends for maximising plant efficiency include increasing the throughput of existing process vessels (often by a factor of two or more) and the use of newer, highly intense processes. In both instances, the process intensity results in the generation of higher heat fluxes to the crucible walls. High-intensity furnace operation with the objectives mentioned above has become possible with the following furnace design features: Strong sidewall cooling systems, using copper coolers, to accommodate the high heat fluxes encountered while protecting the crucible refractories; Robust, spring-loaded furnace horizontal and vertical binding systems which maintain tight brick joints through-out all stages of operation; and Well-designed, intensely cooled tapholes for metal, matte and slag. The integration of these features along with properly selected refractories, appropriate instrumentation systems and efficient water-cooling systems is also highly critical. These design features have been successfully implemented in electric smelting furnaces, flash smelting and converting furnaces (Outokumpu and INCO types) and lance injection furnaces (Mitsubishi, Ausmelt and Isasmelt types). This paper will discuss design aspects and operating results for several installations.
