Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited mines and pro cesses iron ore from two orebodies at Tom Price and Paraburdoo, situated in the North West of Western Australia. Conventional open pit mining methods are used at both sites in that material is drilled and blasted in benches, loaded by shovels and hauled to the Primary Crushers or dumped on waste or low grade material stockpiles. The present drilling fleet, consisting of eight high capacity Bucyrus Erie Rotary drills has evolved from an initial fleet of a large number of small percussion rigs. There are significant physical differences between the ore types encountered at both mines which nec- essitate the drilling of smaller diameter blast holes at Paraburdoo than those at Tom Price. The drilling practice at each site is dis- cussed, with examples of performance achieve- ments under varying drilling conditions.

This paper presents the water management plan of the Mae Moh Project in the North of Thailand, which includes a large lignite opencast mine and thermal power plants. Lignite production will increase from the present 5.5 million tons per annum to approximately 20 million tons per annum by 1995 when the pit area will be about 20 sq.km. and the depth at over 300 meters. Seven power plants are proposed of which two are under construction. The total capacity to be installed is 2,925 MW. The principles considered for water management are firstly flood protection, including drainage of the mining pit and diversion of the Mae Moh stream away from proposed future mining areas; and secondly, a plan to meet the water requirement of the thermal power plants, while maintaining downstream supplies for irrigation and other purposes. The limited annual run-off of Mae Moh and Mae Chang watershed basins are inadequate for the proposed power plants. A study has been prepared to compare two approaches, namely conveying water from remote watersheds to meet the water requirement of the power plants up to total installed capacity; or by limiting future total generation, at the existing site, to only 2025 MV.

Corrosion is a chemical or electro-chemical attack on a metal by the surrounding medium, and it can be stated in general terms that a non-corrodible metal possesses that property either because there is no chemical action between it and the medium, or because the medium reacts quickly with the metal to produce a thin protective coating.When iron or steel is attacked by dilute mineral acids, for example, the products of the reaction are soluble and the formation of a protective film cannot take place; on the other hand, rusting produces a porous film which flakes away and offers little protection to the underlying metal. However, when chromium is alloyed with iron, its resistance to corrosion is improved because the films produced on such alloys become more adherent and tenacious as the proportion of chromium is increased. This research project came about as a result of ICI Australia offering a scholarship to a final-year mining engineering student at the Western Australian School of Mines. A signifi-cant part of this year of study is devoted to an industrial project and consequently one of the conditions of the award is that the successful applicant pursue a research project of interest to the donor company.Having selected the project and the most appropriate final year student, a steering committee composed of representatives of ICI Australia, Kalgoorlie Mining Associates, the Mines Department and the WA School of Mines was set up. This committee is largely responsible for planning the main thrust of the research work whilst the detailed planning and day-to-day activities have been largely the responsi-bility of the research student, his academic supervisor and senior staff at the Mt Charlotte Mine.

The following is a brief summary of the Bulli Colliery and its method of operation when Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. took control.Bulli Colliery is situated about a mile west of the village of Bulli and is some 10 mUes north of the Australian Iron and Steel Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.The mine is owned by Australian Iron and Steel Limited, who purchased it in 1936 from the liquidators of Bulli Colliery and Coke Works.It is one of the oldest working coal mines in Australia, having been opened about 1858 and has worked more or less continuously since that date.The seam worked is the No. 1, or Bulli, Seam, which outcrops along the escarpment of the Illawarra Range and is generally operated by tunnels, the portal at Bulli being some 440ft. above sea level.The colliery holding is fairly extensive, but the coal seam over a large portion of the area within two miles of the outcrop has been more or less destroyed by an intrusion of basalt.At present there is no coal being worked within a distance of about 21 miles from the surface, the farthest workings being about four miles from the tunnel mouth.The existing main haulage road, for the first two miles from the portal, is not straight; it is very narrow over fairly long stretches and has many changes of grade varying from 3% in favour of the load to 13% against the load.The dumping station and screens are situated close to the portal of the haulage tunnel, and at this point the coal is loaded into railway hopper waggons, which are then hauled by rope to the top of a self-acting incline. The waggons are lowered down the incline, a distance of approximately! mile, the ruling grade being about 18 %.From the bottom of the incline, waggons are hauled by Company's steam locomotive to exchange sidings from whence they are taken by New South Wales Government Railway engine to the Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.

The conventional ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) loader utilises a pneumatic system to control the flow of ANFO (via rotary actuator/ball valve) and air (via an auxiliary air valve). This system, though relatively simple and reliable, has several drawbacks with respect to ease of control and level of automation. In this paper, a radio frequency (RF) remote control for explosives charging is discussed. The system design incorporates electric solenoid valves to control the rotary actuator and the auxiliary air valve. All operations associated with explosives charging are selectable at the remote and are completed according to a modifiable time sequence. This allows the following charging sequence to be reduced to a single momentary application of the remote:removal of water from the hole prior to charging with ANFO; charging of the hole for a preset but adjustable period of time; and removal of the remaining ANFO from the ANFO hose. A specially developed remote switch allows the operator to maintain two-handed control of the ANFO hose whilst achieving full control of the charge-up process. Failsafe electronic architecture is incorporated into the systemÆs design to increase safety to the highest level. Should the RF remote control fail, a wired remote is included in the system to allow for the charging process to continue, albeit at a reduced level of control. The application of the RF remote control system in an underground explosives charging operation minimises and/or eliminates many problems associated with the use of the conventional charging system. These include: the wet-hole problem, trip and entanglement hazards, air embolism and the two-man loader control requirement. The developed remote control unit proved to be effective at removing water from wet holes leading to increased face advance per drilling operation. It proved to be economically feasible, allowed for an increase in systemÆs dependability and safety factor and for a truly one-man operation which resulted in reduced manpower.

Tiwest employs several methods to assess the quality of heavy mineral concentrates in ore and process samples. Mineralogy is determined using a method called MA98, developed in conjunction with JKMRC over the last three years (Zhang and Whiten, 2001). A range of other techniques are also used to characterise ore, heavy mineral concentrates and mineral products. MA98 is the culmination of efforts since 1989 to determine mineralogy from chemical analysis without recourse to heavy liquid fractionation, which has traditionally been used to discriminate between light-heavy , zircon, rutile and leucoxene. The major advance with MA98 is the use of statistical mass balancing for all chemical species, as opposed to reliance on key chemical species for each mineral. Three magnetic fractions are analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, with a minerals balance performed for each. Heavy mineral concentrates processed by this method include drill samples, process samples from the wet concentrators and Dry Mill, and mineral products. TBE can be avoided for higher heavy mineral grade samples since quartz is determined from SiO2 balance. In this sense the method is sufficiently universal and robust to cope with a wide range of sample types and compositions. The MA98 algorithm provides abundant information in addition to mineralogy, including TiO2 and Fe2O3 grades of ilmenite and leucoxene, and concentrations of weakly magnetic zircon and kyanite. Information such as this is invaluable in tracking different minerals through the processing plants. Other ore assessment procedures used by Tiwest provide for modelling of orebodies by mineral sizings, Fe in zircon, and FeO and U+Th in ilmenite. Microscopy is used to provide important qualitative information such as grain shape, surface staining and degree of cementing. These quality measurements are included with mineralogy in geological ore models and are available for mine scheduling. In using the above methods to characterise heavy mineral concentrates, Tiwest is better placed to predict and monitor plant performance and product quality from any ore zone.

In-pit crushing systems have been known in the mining industry for many decades. The question whether in-pit crushing is a viable option has often been asked. More than 200 mobile and semi mobile crushing systems have been installed worldwide at various locations and applications. Economic pressures have forced mine operators to reconsider the use of a conventional truck-shovel operation and have contributed enormously to the development of in-pit crushing and conveying systems. The in-pit crushing concepts have varying mobility capabilities. These range from fixed, stationary crushing plants to semi-mobile and fully mobile crushing plants. All these systems are operated in connection with a conveying system. In general in-pit crushing systems have technical and economical cost advantages over truck-shovel operation, particularly as mine capacities increase and mines become deeper. The integration of an in-pit crushing system represents a significant up-front capital investment and the mine is only able to depreciate the capital investment over a sufficient mine life including plant capacity to realise the benefit of the much lower operating cost.

SINCE writing the above-mentioned paper, some further indicator cards have been taken from the No. 1 machine, and the writers believe that a reproduction of these cards will be interesting as illustrating the performance of the machine after fifteen month steady running, night and day, seven days per week and twenty-four hours per day, at the average speed of fifty-seven revolutions per minute (see Fig. 1, page 60). For the past twelve months no adjustment have been made in the valve setting, and the only repairs have been in connection with the springs of the poppet valves, and these but slight, the springs latterly having been removed. The cards illustrated were taken with one indicator, and, therefore, are not simultaneous, andmay show to some extent the yariations of individual strokes, and with that qualification may be taken as typical of the machine's average performance.In connection with some feed-water measurements of the winding engines a rough test was run with the two compressors, the Riedler and the Corliss, coupled to the condenser, and running at fifteen and fifty-seven revolutions per minute respectively, with the result of 15.9 pounds of steam per indicated horse power per hour. This result, though only approximate, seems to indicate that the No. 1 machine is running under the guaranteed consumption, and that it is capable of maintaining this under the severe conditions of everyday practice.

Magnetic Separators have a wide application in dry separation processes, frequently in conjunction with High Tension Separation. Dry processes can frequently be superior to established processes in more commonplace mineral associations. A system of dynamics is postulated and the forces operating ar'e examined, together with a method of evaluating the effect of operating variables. Practical applications of these theories to obtain optimum results on an individual separator, and various separations using a laboratoryroll type separator are described.Practical Flowsheets are of two main types, the first consisting of a series of scalping operations, the second for rougher, cleaner, and scavenger operations with middling recirculation. Some common separation problems with certain mineral associations illustrate the need for different approaches for different mineral associations. A table of mineral separation characteristics is appended, from which amenability may be tentatively estimated.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic separators are widely used, either alone or in conjunction with other wet and dry concentration devices, for the upgrading of a variety of minerals. The high standards of efficiency attainable in dry mills, together with reduced operating and labour costs, are slowly becoming apparent in a wide variety of plants. The combination of wet and dry concentration plant familiar in beach sand mining is finding application for such processes as upgrading a crushed chromite product, and production of clean scheelite,cassiterite, and other concentrates. Other dry beneficiation processes (such as the high tension beneficiation of iron ore, and the benefiGiation of asbestos) avoid the use of wet processes completely.Dry separation processes are likely to be applied more widely as their possibilities become more generally known.

The granulites and related "dry" igneous rocks tend to be passed over during exploration for metals. Preliminary data show that high trace concentrations of Cu, Ni and other metals of economic interest are common in orthopyroxene and some of the other granulite minerals. During retrograde metamorphism of granulites, pyroxenes are converted to amphiboles or phyllosilicates, and significant quantities of metals are released and become available for incorporat- ion into new mineral phases, or may be transported elsewhere. S--rich scapolite is the normal scapolite of granulites. Its retrogression to secondary plagioclase provides much S which scavenges Cu, Ni, etc., from pyroxenes undergoing retrogression, thus producing ore-fluids. A full analysis of a scapolite with 5.10 per cent S03 is given. Beryl is unstable in granulites but the rare Be mineral taaffeite (Al4Pf (Be,Fe)O3) with 5,50 per cent BeO occurs in central Australia as a pale green Tabular mineral easily confused for chloritoid in hand-specimen. Metamorphic differentiation and mobilization of primary ore concentrations are major factors controlling their post-granulite attitude and grade.

The problem of metering fine particulate material at low flowrate is often encountered in metallurgical experiment. This note describes a feeder which wa developed to provide metered flows of copper sulphide concentrate in the range of 0'1-0'7 g/min.It is believed that the present device is easier to operate than previously described feeders (e.g. Hamor and Smith, 1971). It may have applications in the field of analytical chemistry, as well as in metallurgical investigations.

With the post-war expansion of mmmg activities on its Western group of mines, the management of Lake View and Star Limited has commenced a project for the improvement of underground ventilation.The major part of this project is to provide adequate return airways for the ventilation of the deep levels. To this end, the Ivanhoe South Extended shaft is being enlarged, and ultimately an exhaust fan with a capacity of 180,000 cu. ft. of air per minute will be installed at the shaft collar.Prior to 1932, the shaft was used exclusively for baling water from the 800 and 2,000 ft. levels. These two levels are the only ones connected to workings from the Horseshoe lease. After the installation of pumping plant at the Horseshoe Main Shaft, baling was discontinued, and the water was graVitated from dams to the pumps on the 1,000 and 2,000 ft. levels.Water makes into the shaft, through a series of fault planes, between the 600 and 1,500 ft. horizons. The total flow is 16 gal. per minute, of which approximately 7 gal. per minute graVitates to the 800 ft. level. As a big proportion of the water dropped uncontrolled through the shaft, a downcast current of air approximating 20,000 c.f.m. was induced. This air ventilated a limited area of workings in the Horseshoe lease, between the 2,000 and 2,360 ft. levels.In 1938, it was decided to reverse the direction of the airflow in the shaft. The production of approximately 550 000 tonnes of æwhiteÆ or chrysotile asbestos fibre between 1972 and 1983 at the Woodsreef Mine in New South Wales left behind 24 million tonnes of tailings and 75 million tonnes of waste rock and overburden. The Woodsreef Magnesium Project is designed to extract the 23 per cent magnesium content of the tailings to produce magnesium metal and magnesium alloys, the latter with aluminium from the New South Wales smelters. Further value will be added to the tailings waste with the downstream production of magnesium alloy sheets and cast products for the transportation, electronics and other consumer goods industries. The mine opened in 1918 and closed in 1983 becoming derelict. There has been minimal expenditure on rehabilitation compared with that recommended in reports commissioned by the New South Wales Government. The tailings dump has been designated æasbestos wasteÆ by the EPA and will be eliminated through the magnesium refinery process of the Project with the dissolution of the remaining chrysotile fibres. The benign waste from the refinery process will consist principally of silica with some iron. Significant energy savings are expected from innovative new processing technology, in the alloy formation and in the application of the light weight, cast and sheet metal products, particularly in the transportation industries. Globally, there are very large resources of similar tailings with hundreds of years of useful productive lives that could be converted into the metal of the 21st Century, magnesium, and its alloys, to assist pollution and greenhouse gas reduction from transportation industries. No new mining and minimal feedstock preparation is required. Unlike potential producers using carbonate rocks such as magnesite and dolomite that have to be mined, the asbestos tailings composed principally of non-fibrous serpentinite do not contain any carbon dioxide.

Equity finance provides the most suitable and frequently the only access to capital during the exploration and evaluation stages of resource projects when project risk is at its highest. Investors are prepared to provide equity funds in the knowledge that they are compensated for the higher risk they take on with higher potential returns or sufficient upside potential to justify the higher risk. The context of resource projects which determines the role of equity finance has changed considerably. Prior to the resurgence of the gold price and the development of new mining technology many resource projects were selectively mining orebodies by underground methods frequently with limited reserves proved up in advance of mining. The limited proved ore reserves base and the volatility of the gold price all contributed to a higher risk and higher return investment environment in which the use of equity finance was more appropriate and frequently the only option for capital raising. The financial risk of a resources project can be transferred to an underwriter who makes the commitment to distribute the financial risk between a number of investors. There is also the opportunity for financiers to use a mix of equity and debt finance to allow a company to proceed with the development stage where without such a mix the resource project would not proceed. By using a level of equity finance the project becomes robust enough in its ability to service the debt finance facility and the project proceeds with the equity participants receiving a suitable risk reward return. The liquidity from the establishment of a market for the company's securities enhances further capital raising and generally enables the company to satisfy its financial requirements on more favourable terms particularly during bull markets. The role of equity finance in the management of the financial risk during the exploration, evaluation, development and mining stages of resource projects is summarised in Table 1. In more detail the principal roles of equity finance and the ways in which equity finance impact on the risk management of resource projects will be considered in turn.

Anglo Platinum is the worldÆs largest producer of platinum group metals, and also produces large quantities of nickel, copper and cobalt at its Refining complex in Rustenburg, South Africa. In 1995 Anglo Platinum embarked on a smelter modernisation project, primarily to reduce site emissions to below the guideline limit of 20 tonnes per day SO2, but also to increase the converting capacity in line with future projected production profiles. To achieve these requirements the existing Pierce Smith converters were replaced with a single large Ausmelt converter and a new acid plant. This was the first time that an Ausmelt furnace had been used for converting, but it had the advantages of being a very robust furnace and was fully enclosed, giving good gas capture. It was thus considered the most appropriate technology from both a process and an environmental perspective. It also enabled the smelting and converting furnaces to be decoupled. The plant was commissioned from late 2001 and the first tap was in June 2002. Despite being a new technology, ramp-up has been similar to other large scale pyrometallurgical operations. Numerous process improvements have been made since start-up, most notably a change from two-stage batch to fully continuous, resulting in the plant now operating above design in terms of throughput. Optimisation of freeboard accretion control was also a major component of the ramp-up activity. This paper discusses the commissioning and ramp-up issues of the new Ausmelt converting furnace, concentrating on the design and process changes, and summarises current operating performance against the original design objectives.

A critical appraisal of the wide variety of processes used in the pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals shows that there is a strong physico-chemical and, in particular thermodynamic, basis for the variety. Based on this, a simple classif- ication scheme has been developed which makes it possible to understand the methods for extracting individual metals and non-metals pyrometallurgically and to assess which are the more attractive routes. The analysis presented shows why there are essentially two broad routes for pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals; viz., the reduce- refine and the refine-reduce routes. Halides have the role in pyrometall- urgical processing of producing pure compounds for subsequent reduction. The criteria which determine the selection of reduction method for oxide raw materials and intermediate halides (e.g., use of carbon, hydrogen, a more reactive metal or electrowinning) are examined critically in the paper. The treatment of sulfide raw materials is considered also, particularly the criterion for smelting sulfides directly to the metal.

Mining of sulfide-based ore deposits typically creates a potential for release sulfate and acid to groundwater, and many operating mines are thus predicted to require long-term post-closure treatment of groundwater. Toward the goal of selecting an optimal treatment, this paper compares costs of four demonstrated technologies for long-term treatment of sulfate-contaminated groundwater: in situ biological reduction (ISR), in situ permeable reactive barrier (PRB) composed of compost and zero-valent iron (ZVI), and two ex situ æpump-and-treatÆ technologies ù ex situ biological reduction, and ex situ nanofiltration with lime precipitation. Costs for each technology are estimated for treatment of a model aquifer system containing sulfate-contaminated groundwater, with the goal of treating 1 m3/min of groundwater from 1500 mg/L sulfate to a target level of 500 mg/L. (Metal removal is typically achieved by these technologies, and thus excluded from this analysis.) Costs are estimated for each technology as a function of treatment duration (ten to 60 years) and, for PRB and ISR, required replacement frequency (ten to 60 years). Estimated costs include capital and operation and maintenance, using a seven per cent net discount rate. Results indicate that ex situ technologies (biological reduction and nanofiltration with lime precipitation) are the most expensive. In situ technologies may be much less expensive, with PRBs having by far the lowest potential cost, followed by ISR as the next least expensive. However, actual costs for the in situ technologies are very sensitive to poorly constrained parameters, particularly the ZVI content of the PRB, and the effective life of PRB and ISR systems. This large cost uncertainty supports delaying remedial actions where viable, and suggests that feasibility analyses are generally warranted for specific applications to focus on these sources of uncertainty.

The object of this paper is not to describe any particular type of engine in close technical detail but rather to give a general picture of past and present practice in this important section of the industry. The subject involves the study of almost 600 years of coal mining history which has fluctuated from stagnation to extremely rapid progress.Up to the year 1300, coal was obtained from outcrops and exposed beds, but this easily worked source soon gave out, so by that time shafts had to be sunk to the coal seams, and coal mining proper commenced its career.These early shafts were very shallow, and winding equipment was not a matter for much concern. Raising coal was generally achieved by human labour, which was called "coal bearing." Coal was loaded into baskets. strapped to a man's back, and carried from the underground workings to the pit bottom. The unfortunate individual then climbed ladders to the top of the shaft, unloaded the basket, and descended the shaft for the next load. Men, women and even children, were employed as the mine expanded, and were generally bound to the colliery for life, performing daily work which would now be regarded as slavery. This primitive method of raising coal to the surface was slow, inefficient and highly dangerous, yet for want of a better method it continued until in 1602 it isrecorded as having been abolished in Wales, one of England's great coal districts. It was not until 100 years later, however, that it was abolished in the northern coalfields, and the colliers were freed forever from their dreadful life.WINDLASSThe first step towards winding coal was the introduction of the windlass. (Quality can be defined as that which is acceptable to the market and can be supplied with a predictable degree of uniformity and dependability at a low cost. The market for any mining product is downstream processing, whether it be an alumina refinery, a gold processing plant or a flotation plant. The cost of that downstream process is partly dependent on uniformity of its feed material both in physical and chemical terms. With more operations adopting procedures which require quality assurances in line with International Standards, from their raw material suppliers, miners must look to their grade control processes to provide uniformity and predicability.This is not a new concept. The mining industry has constantly been working with ahighly variable raw material supplied by Mother Nature, from whom we cannot demand quality assurances. Through the processes of exploration, resource and reserve definition, long and short term mine planning and day to day grade control an end product has been supplied which consistently meets our customers requirements, in an economic fashion. When any of these processes fail, then penalties are incurred which can range from increased mineral processing costs to loss of markets and in the ultimate case, failure of a mining operation.
