Extensive reserves of kaolin of the type suitable for use as a high quality paper coating exist on the Weipa Peninsula. In 1986 a commercial processing plant was constructed to produce 100 000 tonnes per annum of coating quality kaolin targetted principally for export. A number of processing difficulties have limited the production capability of the plant. The prime area being the pressure filtration operation with achieved cycle times being around 50-60% of design. The rate determining steps being press filling, press unloading and filter cloth washing. This paper details and summarises testwork and results from our attempts at decreasing the filtration cycle time.

Lightweight polymer grids have recently been introduced to the mining industry. They are currently being used for roof and rib control, longwall shield recovery, safety guarding or barricade, highwall screening, internal reinforcement of gunnite/shotcrete applications, sub-base reinforcement, construction of steepened slopes, retaining walls, mine reclamation (i.e. erosion control, turf reinforcement), and in numerous mining waste related projects. These polymer mining grids utilize a strong, lightweight polymer, usually special grades of polypropylene or polyethylene. High tensile strengths are achieved by molecular orientation of these polymers in the manufacturing process. The first step in the manufacturing process is to extrude the polymers into thick continuous sheets. These sheets are then punched, and drawn into open grid structures. Aperture size and configuration are controlled by the geometry of the punched hole and the degree to which the grids are stretched. The drawing process is the key to the molecular orientation required for the tensile strengths. These long chain polymer molecules in their natural state have a random orientation. When stretched, the molecules are pulled into a parallel alignment, thus creating a lightweight product with tensile strength comparable to Steel.

The ocean floor, often called the last frontier, is increasingly discussed in terms of its resource potential û from near shore building aggregate and placer deposits to massive sulfide orebodies in the deeper ocean. Consequently there is an increasing incentive to mine the seafloor. But, do we have the social license to explore and mine the seafloor? Does this nascent industry have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? And what should be done? To answer some of these questions, the Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship has explored the social viability of an expanded seafloor exploration and mining (SEM) industry inAustralia. The results show that there are significant geological and environmental data gaps and that, in the absence of sufficient information, stakeholder reaction to the prospect of an SEM industry expansion may be reactionary and negative. This uncertainty means that the perception of risk from the industry is variable and often dependent on individual values. The acceptability of an expansion to the SEM industry is currently precarious, in particular due to the high levels of uncertainty regarding the environmental impacts of seafloor activity. While there are existing federal regulatory frameworks and government processes for the licensing of seafloor mineral exploration and extraction, there is little precedent in the application and implementation of these regulations. The future viability of the industry will be highly dependant on AustraliaÆs ability to improve the knowledge-base underpinning its regulatory regime and also to generate open and transparent communication channels between stakeholders. It will also be dependent on the SEM industryÆs ability to communicate an acceptable value proposition to society. This proposition will need to include the relative impacts of terrestrial and marine mining, the alternative potential uses of the ocean and the multi-use conflict that SEM might engender. Four quartz latite rheoignimbrite units (units I to IV) mapped in the Goboboseb Mountains have been traced to their eruptive source, the Messum intrusive complex; this is a complex multistage ring structure (18 km diameter) with well defined gabbroic, monzonitic, and syenitic intrusive phases, and a central ring zone containing mixed rhyolitic to latitic agglomerates. Three of the four quartz latite units are correlated with the upper and lower (2 units) Springbok quartz latites outcropping some 90-130 km north of McIsum. This implies minimum volumes of 300-500 km for wits I and III (Lower Springbok) and 2200-2600 km for unit IV (Upper Springbok). This latter unit is still ti 300 m thick at its outcrop limit, some 130 km from Messum. Each of the four units represents single cooling units. Lithologically, each can be divided into three zones: A basal, dark grey to black flinty or glassy zone, often with highly attenuated fiamme (ressembling flow banding); a central massive and strongly recrystallised zone; and an upper variable zone which exhibit breccias, contorted flow banding, and amygdaloidal to pumiceous clasts. Their overall characteristics tend to be intermediate between ash flows and lava flows. The rheoignimbrites are interpreted as the oproducts of dense, high temperature (950¦-1100 C) ash flows which underwent rheomorphism and lava-like flow prior to their final cooling.These large scale eruptions are related to the initial rifting of Africa and S. America, possiby in response to a major hot spot.

The experience gained in the development of an Operator Guidance System (OGS) for on-line process control and fault diagnosis in a commercial scale sintering process will be discussed in this paper. The OGS development started with the specification of feasible control and support tasks, eg ratio control scheme, mass balance calculations. Next, minimum requirements for fault diagnosis and process control were defined and the adequacy of existing instrumentation was assessed. The OGS knowledge base consists of both quantitative and qualitative diagnosis methods. Quantitative models based on fundamental engineering principle are used first and any gaps in such quantitative knowledge are then filled with heuristic rules. The diagnostic rules for the knowledge base was developed based on the knowledge acquired from experienced operators and operations engineers and validated with plant data. A real time reasoning program was written using C language and data base software. The OGS has a human-computer interface which is the primary means of interaction between the OGS and process operator. The OGS development has been successful in assisting operators in decision-making in their routine tasks. Further enhancement to the existing system is currently underway.

The working of alluvial deposits has from all times been a popular form of mining, not only from the simplieity of its operations, but also, in its more primitive stages, from the possibility of carrying it on without large capital, without skilled lahour, expensive plant, long terms of preparatory work, or, in fact, any other requisite than a shovel, a dish, and a stout pair of arms. It is possibly one of the oldest industries, and probably, also, it has been one of the most profitable.In tbe Australian States the happy days of rid alluvial deposits, when gold was to be hltd for the shovelling, are now almost over. The lust for gold has caused almost every corner of the world to be ransacked, and the more easily earned wealth to he exhausted: for the most part there remain now those deposits only which are too poor to be profitably worked by means of the implements and methods of old times. But, though the deposits have become poorer, the keen inventiveness of man has devised means whereby such large quantIties can be treated at a cost so low that he can still make a profit out of them. In this article, out of the many means devised, three only will be referred to-viz., hydraulic sluicing, bucket dredging, and hydraulic dredging. All mining may be divided into three principal operations-1st, the breaking down and conveying of the ground to where it is to be treated for the recovery of the metallic values, 2nd, the treatment of the material for the recovery of those values; and, 3rd) the removal of the worthless material or tailings. In all mining the object is to effect these three processes for the least expenditure of money commensurate with the highest degree of efficiency.

The empirical stope design techniques developed by Mathews et al (1981) and refined by Potvin (1988) and others, have gained rapid acceptance in Australia in the 1990s as a simple, æfirst-passÆ means of designing primary stopes. However, it is recognised that these æstability graphÆ methods can only provide broad design guidelines. Recently published stability graphs (Hutchinson and Diederichs, 1996) encompass a wide range of geological environments, which are not discussed, and the influence of time and blasting practices cannot be easily reviewed. The æscatterÆ in the graphs must reflect, to some degree, different operating practices as well as subtle but important differences in the pre-mining conditions that are not adequately accounted for in the æmodified stability numberÆ. Development of a ælocalÆ, site-specific stability graph may overcome some of these problems. At NormandyÆs Golden Grove Operations, Western Australia, detailed reviews of stope stability performance, including Cavity Monitoring System (CMS) surveys, are undertaken for every stope, with the objective of developing a series of local stability graphs, customised to site conditions and calibrated in terms of æAverage Falloff ThicknessÆ (AFT). Cablebolting of stope hangingwalls is used to develop reinforced æbeamsÆ on each sublevel, effectively dividing the full span into smaller, more stable æsubspansÆ. By analysing stope stability performance in terms of fall-off, cost-benefit studies can be undertaken of the effect of cablebolting and other options for modifying stope spans. The approach used to develop the local stability graphs, and their integration into routine stope design procedures at Golden Grove, is described. The experience gained during stope extraction in the Scuddles orebodies has been successfully applied to the Gossan Hill æC-PanelÆ orebody. This methodology should be applicable to other underground mining operations.

This paper concerns a pragmatic approach to a problem that is common to many operations in the mining industry: how, over the short-term, to grasp the extent and distribution of long-term financial risk from environmental causes and reduce these risks strategically, in order to maintain stability and flexibility in the operations. Surprisingly, many companies operate without an environmental master plan or tools that can help managers measure and reduce financial risks. Such companies may be subject to unknown unacceptable financial risks from environmental causes. While many companies have some kind of internal system of environmental standards, it is often the case that such systems have uneven or limited effect, and offer no opportunities for visualising, measuring or managing aggregate financial risks from environmental causes. `Aggregate risks' are defined here as the calculated total expected financial costs to a company, or a subdivision of a company, from environmental causes at nominated operations over a defined time period. Aggregate risks take into account the type and magnitude of an environmental problem set, the likelihood of occurrence, and the time frame during which the problems will develop or solutions are required. For the large corporation, the 'amount of' aggregate environmental risk is a statistic that can be managed, along with other financial parameters, at the corporate level to improve the stability and predictability of operations, and protect the interests of shareholders. This paper concerns development of a management framework and a tool for the large corporation that responds to the need for managing aggregate environmental financial risks. The logical framework proposed to overcome the need for strategic vision is the Environmental Master Plan, and this is described in the next section. The analytical tool proposed to measure aggregate risks and provide relevant data and insights to managers, is called an Environmental Risk Management Information System, and its mechanics are described in a subsequent section.

The Goodyear nickel prospect is located 45 km southeast of Kalgoorlie (31.04¦S, 121.80¦E) near the eastern boundary of Hampton Area - East Location 45 (Figure 1). Nickel mineralisation was discovered on the Goodyear prospect in March 1996 when a reverse circulation drillhole (GYC5), initially drilled in December 1995, was deepened to meet a minimum footwall penetration requirement of 20 in that had been set for the drill program. Approximately 3 in of sulphides averaging 4.9 per cent nickel was intersected from 296 metres down-hole, this being within 2 in of the first end-of-hole. Hole GYC5 was part of an eight hole drilling program undertaken by Titan Resources in late-1995. This program was designed to test whether nickel mineralisation in the Dunlop prospect, discovered by the Western Mining Corporation - BHP Camylia Joint Venture immediately east of the East Location 45 boundary, continued across the tenement boundary. The area targeted by the initial drill program had been explored by Western Mining Corporation in the mid-1980s using extensive surface sampling and a drilling program that included 17 RAB and percussion drillholes. None of these holes intersected nickel Mineralisation.\

The application of reinforcement techniques to enhance the stability of underground coal mine roadways subject to high stresses is discussed. Research conducted in the Illawarra Coal Measures has been aimed to delineate the factors which influence the behaviour of rock above roadways and the performance of the reinforcement placed. Design considerations for the reinforcement of mine roadways in the Bulli coal are based on a quantification of the rock response together with a reinforcement strategy to enhance the structural integrity of the roof strata.

The design and selection of components for belt conveyors is a well known procedure and many handbooks, catalogues and design manuals offer a wide range of detailed information which can be applied to most of the known conveyor problems. The aim of this paper, however, is to investigate the various methods of conveyor drive configurations, and incorporate the latest technical achievements in the control systems, particularly for high capacity conveyor systems carrying ore from pit to processing plants where the lowest maintenance, operating and initial costs are of major importance. Past experience has proven that multi pulley drives can reduce initial capital cost of a conveyor; this leads to the need for better torque control during startup, running, stopping and load sharing. Many methods of torque control are available and have been used in the past. All types have their advantages and disadvantages and must be considered when designing a conveyor or conveyor system. However the recently developed solid state electronic soft start controls utilising AC squirrel cage induction motors are gaining acceptance, especially for a conveyor system where the same control and logic system can be used to transmit startup commands to more than one

The firing of mass blasts at Isa Mine is a normal operating practice. Both electric and non-electric initiating systems are being used for this purpose. The advantages gained by large firings relate to the Planning, Scheduling, Services and Production functions of Isa Mine. More efficient us"e is made of manpower due to the concentrated charging effort and con- tinuity of the charging operation. In addition, the requirement for ring firing personnel to work at the edge of large stope voids is reduced. Better fragmentation results from the interaction of adjacent detonating rings of blastholes and in flight collisions. With mass blasts there is also less chance of large blocks of ore, created by faults or joints, falling into the stope and creating problems at the drawpoints. The formation of a large tonnage of broken ore facilitates production at scheduled rates from that stope source. The weight of explosive detonating during a mass blast can be considerable. Isa Mine has achieved satisfactory blasting results without excessive ground vibration levels and present knowledge indicates that pillar ground stab- ility has been maintained.

Successful heap leaching depends on three major factors: 1. Chemical conditions appropriate for the dissolution of the valuable metal; 2. Contact between the leach solution and the valuable metal particles; and 3. Movement of the leach solution through, and out of, the heap. Given that appropriate chemical conditions can be provided, and the individual particles have sufficient permeability to allow solute/solvent contact, the problem of getting the solution to and from the particles remains. Non-uniform percolation of solution throughout the heap, caused by the presence of fines, is a common problem which occurs, to some extent, with all heap leachable ore. The conventional solution to this problem is agglomeration, which involves the attachment of fine particles to larger particles, effectively modifying the size distribution by preventing the fine particles from acting on their own. While agglomeration must be considered as an extremely effective technique with virtually no limit to its application from a technical point of view, its application is limited by economic considerations. A new technique has been developed which is not only a low cost alternative to agglomeration, but also has the potential for enabling the application of low cost heap and vat leach techniques to a significantly wider range of ores than current practice would suggest. The new technique, known as Electrokinetic Leaching, utilises electro-osmotic flow to enhance percolation through the heap. This paper describes and presents results of the laboratory testing, pilot heap operation and commercial application of Electrokinetic Leaching of a low grade gold ore and a tailings deposit. Comparative cost analyses between conventional and the alternative processing techniques are presented.

High methane content of the medium volatile metallurgical coal mined from the Coal Basin mines causes very difficult mining conditions. Rapid desorption into the mine ventilation system limits coal production, requires huge fresh air quantities and creates mine safety problems. In workings deeper than 2000 ft (600m) gassy coal and heavy cover create outbursting conditions. Cross-measure methane drainage has reduced ventilation requirements on advancing faces, but degasifica- tion of virgin coal is needed to improve mining Conditions.

In a time of changing rainfall patterns and in the light of recent tailings dam failures, there is closer environmental scrutiny for proposed tailings dam construction or expansion. Therefore the elimination of the traditional tailings dam could provide both environmental and cost benefits to an operation. One method to dewater tails is using pressure filtration to achieve lower moistures than what is currently available using other dewatering technologies. Further benefits include a higher rate of filtrate recovery, reuse of waste material and the potential for dry stacking of the filtered tailings cake, thereby minimising both risk and cost. This paper chronicles the replacement of two existing belt filter presses with a single McLanahan recessed plate filter press to dewater a tailings stream at a Bacchus Marsh site. It covers the slurry testing, equipment selection, installation, commissioning and operation of the filter press to achieve the following objectives:• removing the current tailings dam and slimes cells from the existing process to minimise failure risk and reduce the cost of a dam upgrade, as well as operational and maintenance costs• free up the surface area which was previously occupied by tailings dams and slimes cells• recover additional water to be returned to the process• reduce flocculent usage• reduce truck movements and handling.The project’s owner also expects to reduce carbon emissions by over 3000 t over the lifetime of operation as well as substantially reducing operating expenditure. By recognising the carbon reduction benefits, the project owner was able to successfully achieve partial funding through the Voluntary Waste Industry Protocol.An unanticipated, but as yet unquantifiable, bonus for the project was to seek an offtake agreement for the tailings thereby allowing the tailings to be considered a valuable source of beneficiated clay suitable for the construction industry.CITATION:Godwin, P and Williams, R, 2017. The Palaeozoic succession of Victoria contains one of the world's major gold provinces with a total production of 2500 tonnes of gold. Larger deposits, including Bendigo (over 800 tonnes Au), are related to Ordovician slates and greywackes, but a wide range of metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rock types are host to significant gold deposits. Most, if not all, deposits demonstrate structural control, although the controlling structural features are variable between deposits: a majority of deposits comprise quartz veins. It is suggested here that a major factor in making Victoria such a gold-rich province might be a particularly high geothermal gradient in central Victoria during the Tabberabberan orogeny (360-380 my). This generated auriferous metamorphic fluids from underlying successions (?Cambrian) which migrated upwards along active structural pathways. One cause of gold deposition appears to have been fluid reduction by carbon, but other methods are suspected. This model is considerably simpler than the plethora of syngenetic, granite magmatic and lamprophyre-related models that have been proposed recently, but is in basic agreement with Cox et al. (1983). Exploration models for similar gold deposits both within Victoria and elsewhere should take account of the negligible evidence for a major syngenetic contribution to Victorian gold production, and the lack of any clear genetic relationship to particular igneous rock types. A real opportunity exists for new deposit types not identified by the early prospectors.

The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. Vatukoula, the Fijian equivalent of gold rock, is the name of the community embracing the gold mines owned and operated by Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and' Dolphin Mines Ltd. It is situated in the Tavua Goldfields approximately five miles from the northern coast of Viti Levu, the largest island of the Colony of Fiji.The climate is sub-tropical, there being a definite wet and dry season. The wet season is somewhat variable in length but usually extends from December to March, during which time most of the rainfall for the year is recorded.Although the average annual rainfall is 71 in., more than twice this amount has been recorded. Precipitation at the rate of 5 in. per hour is not uncommon and 15 in. of rain has been registered in 24 hours. The mining methods adopted, therefore, had to suit these wet conditions.The occurrence of gold in the Tavua area has been known since 1872, but it was not until 1932 that discoveries were made which led to the formation of the present operating companies. In 1934 the Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd. commenced operations, followed in 1935 by the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and later by the Fiji Mines Development Ltd., now known as the Dolphin Mines Ltd. A study was made of the instrumentation and technique of atomic absorption spectroscopy developed by Walsh of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia.The method was evaluated for the determination of silver in lead sulphide concentrate. The precision of the procedure developed is equal to that of the uncorrected fire assay method and the accuracy is greater.Brief mention is made of the use of this technique for the determination of silver and other elements in ores and concentrator products.
