Here, in what is partly a review and partly a personal viewpoint, I take stock of changes in emphasis and comprehension on the subject of basaltic volcanism in the decade that has passed since the completion of the landmark Basaltic Volcanism Study Project (1981). I concentrate attention on the relatively neglected physical-volcanology aspects (in 1988 it was still possible to publish a 340-page book on flood basalts with barely any mention of physical mechanisms).I adopt the useful unifying concept of "volcanic system" to embrace the invariably-present intrusions as well as the volcano; I consider controls exercised by magma-supply rate and modulator-mechanisms on the nature of the system;I emphasize that sheeted-intrusion complexes, consisting either of dikes or inclined sheets (depending on the ability of the system to expand laterally) occur in all eroded major systems and fuel geothermal systems; I show how constraints set by cooling of narrow intrusions cause such complexes to be wedge-like and produce considerable rotations; I consider the role of the level of neutral buoyancy in making magma chambers possible, causing lateral subsurface magma flow and localizing intrusions, while the LNB itself can be accentuated by intrusions; and I examine the possibility that underwater systems could have very different internal structures from systems on land.

Comalco Limited has recently completed construction of a $50 million kaolin plant at the site of its bauxite mining and industrial minerals operation at Weipa. The plant will produce 100,000 tonnes per annum of coating grade kaolin for the paper industry. Comalco produced the first coating kaolin from the deposit in 1979 on a trial basis. Since then a variety of quality coating grades with specific particle size distributions and brightness values have been prepared. Extensive drilling and bulk sampling of the deposit over eight years has shown that the ore body is large and of a high grade suitable for the production of premium quality coating kaolins. The processing plant technology was developed by Comalco in association with the European kaolin and equipment producer Amberger Kaolinwerke GmbH (AKW). The Weipa kaolin plant is the first of this size to be built in the Pacific Basin region and it will offer the region's paper-coating mills a stable and reliable source of high-quality kaolin, shipped from an established bulk loading port. A laminar-flow furnace technique was used to study the combustion of 37-53 µm size fraction of Woodlawn copper concentrate containing 7.4 per cent zinc, 5.0 per cent lead and 22.5 per cent copper. Factors studied included the effect of time, temperature and the distribution of volatile elements between the panicles and the fume. Air was used for most of the work but a few tests were carried out using 1 per cent oxygen in nitrogen. Chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron and optical microscopy of polished sections were used to characterize the reaction products.When the concentrate was combusted at low temperatures (800-900°C), the fume was rich in lead. At higher temperatures, this was diluled by increasing amounts of zinc and copper. 70 per cent of the zinc, 60 per cent of the lead and 40 per cent of the copper were found in the fume after oxidation at 1400°C. Lead, zinc and copper were present in the fume as anglesite (PbSO4), zincite (ZnO) and cuprite (Cu2O) respectively. The major phases present in the panicles were magnetite (Fe3O4) and/or cuprospinel (CuFe2O4), with some zincite and cuprite.Elemental copper was found in the particles oxidized in 1 per cent oxygen. Ore and coke of various size fractions (1 to 11 mm) were packed in a column (146 ó) and resistance to air flow measured under a range of conditions. Results have shown that layered charging results in an interface having essentially a directional structure the thickness of which is directly proportional to the coke and ore size ratio and whose flow resistance exceeds that of the coke layer many times its thickness. Friction factor - Reynolds number plots showed large positive departure from the Ergun equation for all components investigated whilst functional analysis and that in terms of bed constants, showed a strong dependency of the pressure gradient on bed properties and the actual particle size as well as the size ratio. It is also shown that pressure gradient in mixed beds follows previously reported behaviour and that a directional interface offers higher resistance to flow than a mixed interface having the same volumetric ore/coke ratio. Significance of results to practice is discussed.

Since its formation in Papua New Guinea and raising of A$2 million in 1980, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) has grown to a company capitalised on the Australian Stock Exchange at about A$350 million. In 1995 the company produced some 237 000 ounces of gold, 700 000 ounces of silver and nearly 5000 tonnes of copper from its operations at Red Dome, in North Queensland and San Cristobal in The Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. This production contrasts with Niugini Mining's first mining venture at Mt Victor in the Eastern Highlands of PNG which yielded 20 000 ounces of gold and 11 600 of silver between 1987 and 1989. Following the formation of an exploration joint venture in 1982 with Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Ltd, now a subsidiary of RTZ, Niugini Mining's early recognition of the gold potential of volcanic rocks at plate margins led to discovery of the Lihir deposit in July 1982. This deposit containing about 42 million ounces of gold in resources, is one of the largest undeveloped gold deposits in the world. Following raising of equity funds through the float of Lihir Gold Ltd and debt finance in 1995, construction of the mine at a cost of US$673 million is now underway with first full-scale production at approximately 600 000 ounces of gold per year expected in early- 1998.

To enable this, large tonnages are put through the blast furnace, and, at the same time, the quality of the iron must be under definite control.The modern blast furnace enables these objectives to be attained. The description whieh follows sets out the general details of construction of such furnaces, and the operation at thc Broken Hill Proprietary Company's blast furnaces at Newcastle, New South Wales.The occurence of iron in many forms is so well known as to need no description. Modern civilisation may be said to be built on a foundation of iron, and, today, the production of iron and steel has beeome one of the world's industries.A short historical introduction will serve to show the evolution of the processes and apparatus since iron production assumed importance.There is no definite date fixed as to when iron was first made, or by what means it was first discovered. Perhaps prehistoric man threw iron bearing stone on to his fire, and these became reduced, Ieaving a soft metal behind, or more probably the first iron was of meteoric origin.There is evidence, however, to prove that it has been known for a period of 6000 years. Iron has been found in the Pyramids and its use was known to the early Eqyptians and later to the Hebrews, Assyrians, Greeks and Chinese. Following the Greeks, the Romans excelled in its extraction and uses in the manufacture of their instruments of war, and to this fact can largely be attributed the success of their many wars of conquest. On Monday, October 25th, 1971 at approximately 12.15 a.m. the night shift proceeding underground discovered smoke at No.1 and No-3 cut throughs on the eastern side of the belt heading and in close proximity to the upcast shaft. Attempts to control the fire continued throughout the morning; as the position underground altered various procedures were adopted in an effort to contain and control the fire. Despite these efforts at approx. 12.40 p.m. a sudden change occurred which made it necessary to withdraw all workmen from underground, the vicinity of the Tunnel entrances and upcast shaft. Sealing of the mine at the entrances was the only remaining alternative. Several boreholes were put down to enable sampling of the atmosphere and air temperatures to be taken. This was essential as a guide to determining when conditions were suitable to allow exploration of the area using mine rescue self contained breathing apparatus.

A new model of flotation is presented which allows predictive calculations of total solids flows and metal grades and recoveries to be made for industrial flowsheets. A method of making these calculations is presented and illustrated with examples. The problem of determining sufficient flotability characteristics from a sample of circuit feed to predict the behaviour of that specific ground ore in the flotation circuit (ie performing flotometric analysis) is addressed, and some suggestions are made for its solution. A feature of the flotation model is its practical technological orientation, allowing determination of a small number of ore flotability parameters by fitting observed batch kinetic flotation data. The unit model explicitly includes the cell aeration as total bubble area per unit pulp volume, and pulp residence time. Although more complex unit models are feasible, it is thought that this model is sufficiently realistic to illustrate the points made. The modelling approach is illustrated by application to flotation data from a Kambalda ickel circuit. The model is parameterised and ore flotability parameters are back-calculated from batch kinetic data. These parameters are then used to fit the observed behaviour of the industrial circuit by numerically adjusting the unit aerations. Finally, it is shown how the model may be used to predict the effect of circuit and ore changes on the circuit's technological indices.

The specification for tender nominated the requirements for ore hoisting and servicing; this showed that one common duty winder could be selected. Foliowing the design of the shaft layout, the merits of fixed or rope guides were compared and the latter selected.The specification called for the supply and installation of the complete hoisting system. Construction of the winder tower and shaft bottom steel work had to proceed while mine development was in progress using the sinking winder and headframe. Guide ropes, winder ropes, and the sky shaft were installed in the shortest possible time, and as the shaft was not equipped with ladder-ways, a second means of access had to be provided.Very few problems were encountered witll the commissioning of the winder, and in the first 2 years of operation the only significant modification was to the circuitry associated witll the moving access platforms.Hoist rope tension checking and adjustment are simple, and non-destructive testing has shown no deterioration of these ropes. The operation of the balance ropes has been very satisfactory but cleaning presented problems in the early stages. Guide ropes have been trouble free and require minimum attention.Normal wear on the PVC rope groove inserts on the winder drum has been negligible.Since the commissioning on fully automatic ·control, the winder has operated with very few, minor delays.

Over the longer term, the adoption of new technology is an essential component in the endless tasks of reducing mining costs, improving safety and improving environmental standards. However the choice of which of the many available new technologies to adopt and which not to adopt is not easy and the price of mistakes can be very high. The most important issue for mine developers faced with making such choices is knowing whether or not a new technology has been developed to the stage where the timing is right for its adoption. A system for categorising new mining technologies is provided. It provides a basis for more easily reaching common understandings about various new technologies and the background information supplied provides an understanding of what it takes to get new technologies to the proven stage and the risks of never getting there. Wherever possible, new full-scale mine developments should not rely on unproven technologies. Approaches to handling situations where a proposed new mine development is not feasible on the basis of proven technologies are also provided. If any commitment to the use of unproven technologies is made, a guarantee of high quality development support from the supplier of that technology is essential. Several case studies of successful and unsuccessful new technology development programs at BHP are Provided.

Digital computers, by virtue of their capacity for high speed repetitive calculation at low cost, are finding increasing application to routine calcula- tions in the mining industry. In this paper techniques are shown whereby the use of computers can be extended to more complex tasks. The regular calculation of grades and tonnages of material to be extracted from specified areas of an operating open pit is a necessary part of production planning. In this paper it is shown how these calculations can be carried out by computer. thereby freeing planning staff from manual calculation. An operating open-pit mine can be described in terms of drill logs, geological ore boundaries and pit perimeters at various levels. These form the data base which must be suitable for frequent updating to incorporate new information. A suite of computer programmes is described which operates on this data base to calculate tonnages and grades of ore within extensions to the perimeters as indicated to the system by planning staff. Possible future extensions are discussed.

A new technology has been introduced - the use of the High-Water Solidifying Material for providing pumped roadside supports to maintain a roadway for re-use in longwall retreating. As a gob edge support, its initial use at Hebi No. 1 Colliery was successful, providing acceptable performances in support and control of convergences and lateral closures of the gob-edge roadways. This acceptability applied to both first use and re-use when the roadway became a gateroad for the adjoining longwall, remaining stable throughout the associated loadings and convergences. The technology promises economic and social benefits.

The complexity of understanding the whole thickening process to achieve real performance improvements cannot be underestimated. The last significant change in feedwell design was more than 15 years ago with the introduction of self-dilution systems û firstly with OutotecÆs Autodil, followed by FLSmidthÆs E-Duc. Now, following many years of extensive in-house research, including close collaboration with AMIRA and the CSIRO, Outotec has launched the next generation Vane Feedwell. The Vane Feedwell has been globally patented and installed at various sites. This paper briefly outlines the feedwellÆs development using CFD modelling and its subsequent performance in a æreal lifeÆ site installation. Plant results of the first commercial Vane Feedwell, in a mineral sands application, are discussed. The Vane Feedwell was retrofitted so comparative data of pre- and post-installation is shown.

Through the stress synthesis of many examples of macrostructure in the middle of China, it can be concluded that in the middle of Chinesetectonics there are two compression-torsion-forces, one of which ( from NW to SE ) came from the northwest side of Aerjinshan abyssal and giant fault("F1A", see Fig.7,8,9 ); the other (from S to N ) came from the south side of the north piedmontal fault of Kunlunshan-the south piedmontal fault of Qinlingshan ("F2K-F2Q", see Fig-7,829 ).Owing to the two compression torsion forces a new special type of structure named rotation-apart structure occurred from Chaidamu basin to Hebai, Henan, Anhui plain,from Caledonian movement, Hercynian movement,Yenshan movement to Himalayan movement, step by step In the north of Qilianshan during the late Caledonian movement: during the Hercynian movement it extended into a vast area including the Chaidamu basin and Eerduosi basin; during the Yenshan movement it spread over the whole area of Helanshan,Eerduosi basin and Hebai , Henan, Anhui plain. In the period of Himalayan movement all these structures revived .The rotation-apart structure controlled the distribution of all mineral deposits and also were the mineralizing structures.The relation between these rotation-apart structure and earthquakes is very close.

Competitive commercial circumstances internationally provide a prime impetus for miners to seek new technologies as a means to profitability and survival. Engineering and project management activities play a vital role in establishing, operating and developing the capital facilities used by miners. Computer based technologies are the single most important technology for maintain- ing competitiveness in engineering and project management into the future. Current applications of computers in engineering design and drafting are finding economic applications, computer-aids are more readily introduced, accepted and profitable. Computing technology is advancing very rapidly and on a broad front in hardware, software and communications. This technology advance is improving the ability of engineers and project managers to provide a high quality, responsive and low cost service which will improve in parallel with computer technology. As this technology advances, a key challenge is created for managers in selecting hardware and software, in developing people and organisations and in marketing the technology to advantage. While the future holds many exciting developments, people will still hold the key roles. While the nature of their roles may change, the final acceptance or rejection of technology will be by people, whether as users or owners, who will judge on the basis of whether their stake is improved or not.

The paper first outlines the conceptual basis for evaluating and controlling geological risk. Geological risk, the economic reflection of the uncertainties associated with tonnage, grade, and other pertinent deposit parameters, is evaluated in terms of economic risk criteria. Delineation provides the deposit information required to appraise and control this risk. The improved reliability of geological estimates resulting from additional delineation reduces the economic risk associated with mine development and production decisions. However, the benefits of delineation, subject to diminishing returns, have to be weighed up against the direct and time costs involved. These costs decrease base case economic values and shift the probability distributions of possible outcomes towards, lower values. The optimum amount of delineation normally is achieved short of the point where economic risk is minimised, depending on the mining company's relative preference for a higher base case value or a lower economic risk. Then, two open pit copper mine examples, based on actual situations, are analysed to illustrate the application of the concepts presented. The first case concerns the extension of ore reserves at an operating mine. Finally, a new mine development opportunity is considered.

Minor iron formation related base metal sulphide mineralization occurs in granulite facies metamorphic rocks of the early Proterozoic Willyama Complex. Rock sequences hosting three iron formation related Cu, Zn, Pb prospects from the Thackaringa Group (Suite 3) are described. A caparison of host rock sequences, style of mineralization and facies of iron formations suggests major differences in terms of the overall depositional environment. However, significant similarities are present with respect to the nature and distribution of iron formation facies and the occurrence of chlorite 'alteration' zones in close proximity to mineralization in all cases. The chlorite within these zones occurs in a number of diverse forms in a range of rock types. A comparison of the prospects shows that there is no evidence to indicate that the chlorite in the zones is a retrograde alteration product of former higher grade prograde mineralogies - the chlorite appears to have survived granulite facies metamorphism. The mode of occurence of the chlorite in the 'alteration' zones together with the fact that the association quartz + chlorite + magnetite + pyrite + base metals is cx rmn to all areas suggests that the chlorite is specifically related to the processes which deposited the stratiform iron formations and related sulphides. It is considered that the chlorite precursor was a prenetanorphic alteration product or chemical sediment closely related to submarine hot spring activity which was also the source for chemical sediment precursors of the iron formations, associated lode rocks and Sulphides.

In mining and processing operations where minerals, high in pyrite and low in calcite/dolomite are processed, acid is generated, which needs to be neutralised. Ticor at Empangeni in South Africa (SA) produces rutile (TiO2), leucoxene (TiO2 plus iron compounds), titanium (Ti), zircon (Zi) and ilmenite (TiO2 plus iron compounds). Neutralisation is required in the processing plant where acid is leached into the wash water. This water needs to be treated to a quality suitable for re-use in the metallurgical process or to a higher quality to make it suitable for discharge into the Empangeni sewage system (SA). For re-use the water needs to be neutral and under-saturated with respect to gypsum while for discharge into the sewage system the sulfate concentration needs to be reduced to less than 500 mg/L (as SO4). Acid mine water is generally neutralised with lime. Disadvantages associated with lime are the costs and maintenance of the slaking equipment as well as hazards, associated with handling of the alkali. The cost of powdered limestone (CaCO3) in South Africa, a by-product, is 50 - 60 per cent cheaper than lime. A technology has been developed where limestone is used for neutralisation of acid mine water instead of lime. This development includes: Limestone handling and dosing system. A novel, robust system has been developed where waste CaCO3 from the paper industry is slurried to a constant density. A full-scale plant was constructed to evaluate its performance (Figure 4). The dosing system consists of an inclined slab onto which the limestone is stored and from where it is slurried into a make-up tank. The density of the slurry in the make-up tank is controlled via a loadcell that measures the weight of the tank (operated at constant volume) and activates/deactivates the spray of the recycle slurry onto the slab. Integrated limestone neutralisation/lime treatment process. In this process powdered CaCO3 is used for neutralisation and partial sulfate removal of acid leached from the coal washing plant. The sulfate concentration can be further reduced to below the saturation level of gypsum (ie 1200 mg/L) through gypsum crystallisation by means of lime treatment, resulting in metal precipitation (eg Fe3+ and Al3+). CO2- treatment for CaCO3 precipitation. The pH of the lime treated water can be adjusted to pH levels of 8.5 and lower using CO2. The CO2, generated during limestone neutralisation (Equation 2), can be captured and used in this stage of the process. The first two stages (limestone- and lime neutralisation) of this technology have been implemented on full-scale at Ticor to treat the effluent of the process. The constructed plant is 80 m3/hr and differs from coal processing plants by way of not containing Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the water. The CO2-treatment stage (Stage 3) will soon be implemented at IHM as part of a program to optimise the technology for maximum benefits.

This paper discusses the dewatering strategy adopted and the considerations and procedures required to incorporate a dewaterinq scheme into the Mt Whaleback mining operation. It concludes that in pit pre-dewaterinq has successfully allowed mining to progress below the standing water level with the minimum of disruption or radical change to the mining method. It is recognised however, that dewatering is not a static activity and there is a requirement for ongoing investigations and development. Pre-dewatering commenced in October, 1984. Purpose designed pumping trailers have been employed to minimise the loss of pump availability resulting from the frequent. need to remove and reinstall pumps when close vicinity blasts occur. To July, 1986, some 0.5 Mm' of groundwater had been pumped from the unconfined orebody aquifer. Mining has progressed to some 20 m below the standing water level without. any undue water associated problems. Ultimately, it is ,cheduled to extend some 300 in below the original water level in the West Pit. With the development of an increasing area of the mine below the standing water level, the influence of seasonal high intensity rainfall events, which had previously caused little concern, now need to be addressed. Pumping equipment has been designed to evacuate storm water at a rate consistent with mine production Considerations.
