This paper outlines the mechanism of Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) and how it can cause premature failure of rock bolts. SCC occurs due to the progressive development and growth of cracks in the surface of a metal, and it is caused by the combined effects of stress and a corrosive environment affecting susceptible metals and alloys. It can occur in most metals including stainless steel. It is not a new phenomenon, but its effect on rock bolts has only been recognised recently.Rock bolt failures caused by SCC appear to be brittle failures which occur at less than the ultimate tensile strength of the bolt. In the mining industry, SCC failures of rock bolts can occur a few months, or after many years of exposure to stress and a corrosive environment. If SCC of rock bolts is suspected, then the rock bolts should be examined by a metallurgist, and steps should be taken to reduce the problem.

To discuss this relationship both the problems of the mechanisms of ore accumulation and the origin and cause of volcanism must be faced. Volcanic activity is associated with hydrothermal activity but the causes of volcanism are inseparable from the problems of the origin of magmas generally. To be more in accord with the inevitable reaction between water and silicates at high temperature, it is suggested that reconsidera- tion be given to the role of water in magmas such that our general concept of magmas becomes one of hot hydrous pastes rather than melts with water in them. It is claimed that a general concept of magmas as gelatinous hydrosilicate masses is a far better assumption because the rheological and diffusive properties of such materials enables an adequate explanation of a greater number of observations. It is consistent with the mergence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and requires low to modest temperatures at the time of liquifaction allowing convergence with mobilised and disturbed sediment masses. Groundwater geochemistry is controlled by chemical interactions with aquifer rocks, and offers a powerful geochemical exploration technique for locating concealed mineral- isation. Techniques are applied for identifying constituents of aquifers using the compositions of their groundwaters, collected from the surface through drill holes, water bores or springs. Even slowly moving groundwaters have passed through large volumes of rocks which surround any sample site. Products from these rock-water contacts modify the groundwater. By relating water composition to the minerals from which the dissolved species may have been derived, geochemical exploration information is obtained for a significantly larger zone than is represented by drill hole rock samples. In this paper we describe some solution chemical tech- niques we are applying in mineral exploration, particularly in areas of Australia where ground- waters are highly saline and contain enhanced concentrations of trace metals. EQUILIBRIUM MODELS FOR SALINE GROUNDWATERS Central to our technique is the assumption that in low rainfall regions, aquifer rocks and contained groundwaters are in chemical equili- brium. Solubility calculations then allow us to predict upper limits to the soluble products of groundwater interaction with aquifer rocks and to identify minerals with which the groundwater is saturated. Whilst equilibrium calculations require input of concentrations of all dissolved species, they are actually based on "activity" of dissolved species rather than the analysed concentrations. Unless waters have very low ionic strengths (a measure of total dissolved solids), activity of a solute is not equal to its analytical concentration but equals concentration multiplied by an "activity coefficent". Several methods exist for calculating mineral solubilities. The ion-association model, commonly used in programs such as WATEQ (Truesdell and Jones, 1974) and later deriv- atives such as MINTEQ, assume the formation of complex ions such as MgSO4(0), CaCl+, which are described by formation constants. Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization at Nepean, Western Australia occurs within a small Archaean greenstone outlier in granite south of the main Coolgardie greenstone belt. Individual sulphide ore bodies are situated near the foot- wall contact of simply-differentiated en echelon ultramafic sills that have intruded a sequence of sulphide-bearing metasediments and amphibo- lites. The paper describes a detailed section through the No. 2 ultramafic sill and its associated sulphide ore zone, which gave Metals Exploration N.L. the first significant nickel discovery in the Nepean area in 1968. The sill is variable in thickness up to 30 m along a strike length of 600 m, and is truncated to the north by pegmatite intrusion and pinches out to the south. The body has border zones of pyroxenetic composition, now represented by felted aggregates of chlorite and amphibole, and a central peridotitic core in which olivine and orthopyroxene are concentrated towards the base. Textures within the peridotite are dominated by large lath-shaped olivine grains and their serpentine pseudomorphs, which delineate triangular areas composed of talc, chlorite, and amphibole. Orthopyroxene occurs in large ovoid patches and is often replaced by Talc.

Ordinary kriging and non-linear geostatistical estimators are now well accepted methods in mining grade control and mine resource estimation. Kriging is also a necessary step in the most commonly used methods of conditional simulation used in the mining industry. In both kriging and conditional simulation, the search volume or ækriging neighbourhoodÆ is defined by the user. The definition of this search can have a very significant impact on the outcome of the kriging estimate or the quality of the conditioning of a simulation. In particular, a neighbourhood that is too restrictive can result in serious conditional biases. The methodology for quantitatively assessing the suitability of a kriging neighbourhood involves some simple tests (which we call æQuantified Kriging Neighbourhood AnalysisÆ or QKNA) that are well established in the geostatistical literature. The authors argue that QKNA is a mandatory step in setting up any kriging estimate, including one used for conditioning a simulation. Kriging is commonly described as a æminimum variance estimatorÆ but this is only true when the neighbourhood is properly defined. Arbitrary decisions about searches are highly risky, because the kriging weights are directly related to the variogram model, data geometry and block/sample support involved in the kriging. The criteria to look at when evaluating a particular kriging neighbourhood are the following: the slope of the regression of the ætrueÆ block grade on the æestimatedÆ block grade; the weight of the mean for a simple kriging; the distribution of kriging weights themselves (including the proportion of negative weights); and the kriging variance. Outside of the technical geostatistical literature, there is little in the published domain to describe the nature of QKNA and no practical presentation of case examples. In this paper we attempt to redress this by setting out the calculations required for QKNA and defining some approaches to interpreting the results. Several practical worked mining case examples are also given. Finally some comments are made on using the results of QKNA to assist with block size selection, choice of discretisation and mineral resource classification decisions.

Removing the interference of latter events, the data of geophysical (such as gravity and aeromagnetic) anomalies may indicate whether the mobile belt exist and whether the adjacent terrains of the mobile belt originally belong to one single unit. The petrotectonic assemblage can provide informations about the tectonic setting where it was generated from. The structural style can exhibit the kinetic and kinematic processes. The form of ancient isogeotherm may reflect the ancient geothermal regime which is related to the tectonic mechanism. In general, the early Precambrian terrains suffered polymetamorphism and multiple structural deformation. The researches must be carried out for the distribution of paleogeotharm and m.tamo'phic facies and zones on the basis of recovering the early structural style with structural analysis method; then a relatively correct conclusion may be geined on the ancient geothermal regime. This method can be known as "Ancient Thermotectonic Analysis". Through the sythetical research, a real knowlege about the tectonic setting of early Precambrian mobile belt can be obtained.

The planning, design and construction of a service tunnel, under a major arterial road between two hospitals are described. The multiple uses of the tunnel combine to provide a favourable cost-benefit ratio for the tunnel as part of a rationalisation of services between hospitals. The driven tunnel provides economic, program and approval advantages over that of a cut and cover construction. The cross sectional shape of the tunnel was determined during feasibility studies by the degree of weathering of the Silurian mud- stones, the shallow cover and the proposed excavation equipment as well as the functional requirements. The site investigations covering geotechnical, building, noise and level surveys provided input to the design documentation and construction phases. Monitoring of settlement levels and primary support stresses during early construction stages confirmed the adequacy of the proposed tunnelling methods and support to be used adjacent to the major building foundations. The 140 metre long tunnel was success- fully completed in April 1980 at a cost of $650,000.

Measurements of coulombic efficiency (QE) for zinc electrodeposition were carried out under mass-transfer-controlled conditions using a rotating disc electrode in synthetic acidic zinc sulphate solutions. Various methods of solution preparation and purifi- cation were investigated using reagents vary- ing from analytical grade to high purity; the purest solution was obtained-by dissolving 99.9999% zinc (Koch-Light) in sulphuric acid solution (BDH Aristar). Improvements in sol- ution purity did not necessarily increase QE, especially where apparently beneficial impur- ities (e.g., Pb) were initially present. The maximum QE obtainable through variation of temperature (T), current density-(i) and elec- trode rotation rate was established using a statistical optimization technique. The QE was determined principally by T and i, with significant interaction between these factors in the highest purity solution. QE contours, which gave an overall view of solution per- formance, were constructed and predictions about the response under conditions similar to plant practice were made. Wark's Rule (the dependence of QE on zinc/acid ratio) was obeyed in the purest solution over the range of composition commonly encountered in zinc plants. High concentrations of Na2SO4 and K2SO4, which occur in some plant solutions, were found to increase QE marginally ("1.2%). The intrinsic effects of individual impurities such as Cu and Ni were evaluated by additions (up to 5 ppm) to the purest solution. Decreases in QE were found to be minimal at the impurity levels normally encountered in zinc plants.

South Australian coals are all low in rank and generally poor in quality, with difficult combustion characteristics. This circumstance makes the selection of a fuel source for future power generation difficult, requiring careful study and detailed analysis of the various alternatives. Combustion characteristics can have a significant effect on plant design and costs, and need early attention in any exploration and evaluation programme. The physical location of the deposits, often remote from established infrastructure and centres of population, is also a major factor in the ultimate cost of power at the poirl use.

The Westmoreland uranium deposits occur on the northern flank of the Murphy Tectonic Ridge in the upper member of the Westmoreland Conglom- erate. Uranium mineralization is spatially associated with the contact of the overlying basaltic Siegal Volcanics and the margins of in- trusive dolerite dykes which are geochemically similar to the Siegal Volcanics. Thermoluminescence (TL) measurements on 800 samples from within the orebodies and surr- ounding host rock (up to 8 kilometres away from the deposits) have indicated that all of the Westmoreland Conglomerate has suffered major radiation damagg attributable to at least 10 ppm uranium over 10 years. The underlying rhyolitic Mid Proterozoic Cliffdale Volcanics have distinctive TL glow curves indicative of radiation sensitization caused by high uranium contents. These vol- canics are part of the Mid Proterozoic volcanic event known to be enriched in uranium. The Westmoreland Conglomerate has been derived by erosion of the uranium-rich Cliffdale Volcanics and associated Nicholson Granite Complex which makes it likely that the Westmoreland Conglom- erate had a high inherent uranium content.

The direct smelting of zinc sulfide con- centrates has been investigated by an extensive series of computer-based thermodynamic equili- brium calculations. The study covers both pure 7.n-S-O-C-N systems and practical concentrate- coal-air-flux systems. It is shown that for a zinc concentrate containing iron and lead sul- tide impurities, a 97% yield of zinc vapour with autogenous operation can be obtained under carefully optimized conditions. The possible integration of this process with existing zinc condensation and recovery processes is Discussed.

The amount of copper production by flash smelting process occupies about 17% (equivalent to 1.4 million t/year) of total free world production. In Japan, 650,000 tons of copper is produced annually by flash smelting. This is 65% of the gross copper production of Japan. To reinforce pollution control, promote energy saving, and enhance production efficiency by increasing the size of furnaces, conventional blast furnaces and reverberatory furnaces are being replaced with the flash smelters worldwide. The Ashio Smelter started copper production in 1884 and developed in association with the Ashio mine. In those days, the Ashio smelter produced copper by using the blast furnace process designed for the high-grade ore from the copper mine. At that time, this process was specialized in Japan. In 1956, for the first time in Japan, the Ashio Smelter introduced the flash smelting process developed by Outokumpu Oy of Finland (it is suitable for treating the copper concentrate, producing sulfuric acid and improving production efficiency). The flash furnace in Ashio, the first ever in Japan, had a capacity of 230 t/day for copper concentrate and was operated up to 1962. During this period, various operational troubles were solved, and further improvements were made; and, in 1962, a Furukawa-type flash smelting furnace was completed in Ashio. This improved version of a flash furnace had a capacity of 450 t/day. There was one flash furnace and one waste heat boiler, which were arranged in a unique pattern for that time. This furnace may be said to be the prototype of the present flash smelting process in the world.

Five types of mineral resource were known in the sedimentary cover of the oceans and seas floors prior to the 1980's :1) hydrocarbon fields including some very large zones of oil and gas accumulation; 2) "Red Sea" type thermal oozes with increased concentrations of noble metals; 3) ferromanganese nodules; 4) concentrations of metallic sulphides ("Black Smokers"); and 5) cobalt-bearing ferromanganese crusts on the summits and slopes of seamounts. Since then, the so called "White Smokers", containing sulphides of copper and zinc, have been discovered. The ore horizons (manganese, copper, nickel and other metals) of the sedimentary cover of deep-sea basins comprise a sixth type of mineral resource in the oceans. These horizons have not only a theoretical, but also a principal economic significance

In April 1987, Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) commissioned an ISASMELT reactor to smelt 15t/h of copper concentrate at the Mount Isa Copper Smelter. This unit was based on the Sirosmelt lance technology and incorporated features proven in the Lead ISASMELT plant which has been operating in the MIM Lead Smelter since 1983. From April 1987 to June 1989, the copper smelting plant treated 167000 tonnes. Concentrate, coal and fluxes are fed continuously to the furnace. Oxygen enriched air is injected through a lance which is submerged in the slag bath. Matte and slag are tapped together through a single taphole into a reverberatory furnace, and from there are treated with normal reverberatory furnace production. Advantages of the process include its ability to eliminate most lead and arsenic in feed, its flexibility with respect to feed composition, sizing and moisture, and the plant's low capital cost. Acceptable refractory life has also been demonstrated. The commissioning of a 70 t/day oxygen plant has rerated the plant from 15t/h to 18t/h while allowing a reduction in fuel usage of one third. A trial using 150 t/day oxygen was carried out in May 1989, and showed that the furnace could treat 48 t/h chalcopyrite concentrate while maintaining a very low fuel requirement. The oxygen trial results have given considerable confidence for plant scale-up. Detailed project evaluation is currently underway for the replacement of the roaster and reverberatory furnaces at Mount Isa with a single 110 t/h ISASMELT reactor.

For utilization of solid carbonaceous materials produced in processes of cracking heavy oil, such as petroleum pitch, as powder fuel, it is necessary to develop a process for fine grinding of these materials. It is known that grinding' additives are effective for fine grinding of cohesive and heat-sensitive materials such as petroleum pitch, therefore in this study, effective methods for fine grinding of petroleum pitch with some grinding additives were investigated. Experiments were carried out by using comminution kinetics based on mass balance. From the results of the investigation by using a batch ball mill, it was found that sodium stearate, calcium stearate and carbon black were effective additives for the improvement of grinding efficiency. Optimum concentration of the grinding additives was also found to give a required particle size of products. Concerning to the action mechanism of these additives, it is considered that the additives which adhired to, or were absorbed on the surface of petroleum pitch particles not only prevented cohesion of the particles but improved dispersion of the particles as well. From the results of the investigation by using a laboratory screen mill which is a representative built-in classifiered impact crusher, carbon black was found to be an effective additive for the improvement of grinding efficiency and mill performance. It is also considered that the improvement of classification efficiency by carbon black affected the mill performance.

Based on a principle developed at a South African Mine, the CSIR developed a device with which the alignment of guide rails in mine shafts could be measured. Originally the technique could only be used to obtain guide misalignment values at the bunton sets. At the time this was considered adequate since it was assumed that guide realignment could only be done at the support points anyway. The technology was developed further and now it is possible to obtain æcontinuousÆ guide profiles from the measurements. Software was developed with which a guide realignment schedule can be drafted and the shape of the realigned guides can be predicted. A measuring system based on this technology is being used to conduct guide alignment measurements in shafts. The data is then analysed and a realignment schedule is recommended in consultation with the mine. Such a schedule may be prioritised so that the worst sections in the shaft are dealt with first. The measurement hardware and analysis software are described. Examples are presented that illustrate the principles and highlight measurement errors. A case study illustrates measurements recorded in a newly equipped shaft. A repeat measurement, 18 months later, shows the effect of recommended realignment as well as the change in guide alignment over this period.

Hydrocyclones are the most widely used device for classification in a grinding circuit. However, even the most efficient hydrocyclone has a bypass of fines from the feed to the underflow which reduces comminution circuit performance, as well as misclassification around the cut point. Fine screens classify only according to the particle size, allowing for a reduction in the recirculation of fines back to the mill. The development of high capacity multi-screens makes fine classification in a grinding circuit a viable option. Minera Saucito recently substituted hydrocyclones with screens in its grinding circuit. The change of classifier resulted in an increase in throughput and lead recovery but a decrease in silver recovery. This case study presents the changes in comminution and flotation performance that occurred after the installation of screens and uses historical operational data collected over 12 months of operation to investigate the reasons for these observed changes. The world-class iron ore mines at Mt Whaleback, Torn Price and Paraburdoo located in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia must mine the Mt McRae Shale to obtain high grade ore from the Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. The Mt McRae Shale contains a black pyritic shale lithology that reacts with ammonium nitrate-based explosives. This paper provides an overview of the problems associated with mining this reactive rock type as well as the development of a comprehensive procedure to safely and efficiently blast, excavate and dispose of this material. The strategy used to develop the procedure involved raising the awareness of relevant site personnel to the risks associated in mining the Black Pyritic Mt McRae Shale, obtaining the commitment of these personnel that a detailed procedure was required and that any procedure developed must be followed, otherwise the potential risks such as premature detonation were high. It was also necessary that an on-going training program be implemented so that all relevant new employees would be educated as to the reasons for adhering to the Black Pyritic Shale Procedure.

The situation in which a gas stream flows through a bed of solids is found in many extractive metallurgy operations. Examples include blast furnace smelting, sintering and pellet firing. In such cases the resistance of the bed to fluid flow and heat transfer is of major significance to the operation of the process. This depends on the structure of the bed, which in turn is influenced by the manner in which the materials are charged to the bed. In this work, packed beds of hematite pellets of two different sizes were prepared in which the pellets were charged as a uniform mixture and in layers. The porosity, flow resistance and heat front velocity were measured and compared for the different bed configurations. For layered beds, the overall porosity and heat front velocity increased while the flow resistance decreased when compared with the values obtained for the uniform mixture. The size of the layers also had an effect on flow Properties.

The Brolga deposit is a Ni-Co enriched laterite, formed over intensly serpentinised peridotites of the Marlborough Block. Basement lithologies at Brolga consist predominantly of serpentinised dunite, with lesser massive serpentinite shear, gabbro and harzburgite. Investigation of the deposit has defined 17 different varieties of saprolite, ferralite (limonite), and ferricrete. Different combinations of these varieties form three distinct lateritic associations, the Hard, Soft and Dyke Associations. Recognition of key textural and mineralogical features in each association, an understanding of basement geology, and an awareness of current climatic conditions, suggest that: 1. both the Hard and Soft Associations have formed under relatively dry climatic conditions; 2. the Soft Association reflects much poorer groundwater drainage than the Hard Association; and 3. the Dyke Association has formed from a gabbroic basement, and has also been affected by restricted groundwater drainage, caused by poorly permeable marginal serpentinite shears.
