During the later part of 2007 I was lucky enough to visit the Atlas Copco facilities in Sweden, and to see first hand what a large and diverse company Atlas Copco is. The reason this paper calls the Atlas Copco experience a bonanza is that it means a source of great and sudden wealth or luck; a spectacular windfall or a rich mass of ore, as found in mining. I think this aptly describes the scholarship as it has greatly increased my wealth of knowledge of the mining industry. This paper intends to encourage all those eligible to apply for this fantastic scholarship opportunity, and seeks to thank all those involved who made this scholarship the amazing experience that it was. Atlas Copco produces most of its Swedish products in the town of +rebro, and it was here that I spent most of my time, visiting the Underground Rock Excavation group, the Surface Mining Equipment group and Rocktec. I also travelled around Sweden and was able to visit one of OricaÆs manufacturing plants, the Secoroc groupÆs manufacturing plant, the Geotechnical Drilling and Exploration group as well as being fortunate enough to visit the LKAB mine in the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The trip was not all information on Atlas Copco products and services however; I was able to go to the Ice Hotel in JukkasjSrvi and drink Absolut Vodka out of ice glasses, go on a reindeer safari (as well as eat them!), sample the fine meat from a moose, drink local schnapps, attend the Atlas Copco Christmas party, wander around the wonderful city of Stockholm and generally immerse myself in the great Swedish culture.

A method for relating operating variables and dewatering parameters of Thunes disc filters in the LKAB pelletizing plant at Malmberget in Sweden, via empirical mathematical models is described. Near orthogonal experimental design was used, where all independentvariables were allowed to span over their domain of variation and pseudo-randomly distributed among the experiments. The dewatering parameters are dependent on many variables and instead of using a traditional mechanistic model, an empirical model based on multivariate data analysis was chosen. The way of expressing the relation is by regression coefficients obtained from partial least square regression (PLS). Two empirical models were generated. The models were validated using an extra set of 56 experiments. The dewatering parameters were related to the design variables with few experiments, and user-friendly response surface methodology was used to determine the optimal conditions.

About 3km2 of the central Luise Caldera, in which the Lihir orebody is located, is geothermally active wit.lj gas seeps and fumaroles, and in some areas, a water table at boiling point.The proposed mine, adjacent to Luise Harbor, will be excavated to more than 200m below sea level and will extend into the geothermal system to depths at which current rock temperatures are 170¦C.

Sampling procedures are an important aspect of geophysical exploration survey design. It is good practice that the selection of survey parameters ensures that the signal to noise ratio is optimised, while minimising survey cost.Sampling considerations for any geophysical method include the size of the target, scale of observation, aliasing associated with station and line spacing, nature and extent of overburden, and the presentation of data.As a guide to survey design, the specifics are discussed for three geophysical techniques in common use in mineral exploration; these include the magnetic method, transient electromagnetics and induced polarisation.

It has long been known that drilling and blasting operations have a direct influence over productivity and costs of subsequent operations. If mine management is to effectively optimise blasting operations, good information is required on the operating costs of each of the affected operations, together with knowledge of how they are influenced by blasting. In practice it is not possible to do enough repeats of a full scale production blasting experiment to make a statistically significant analysis of the results. By monitoring each blast and subsequent operations in as much detail as possible, enough data will be available to effectively measure the effect of blasting on costs. This gives management an insight into the blast performance and is the first step towards optimisation. An Integrated Blast-related Cost Reporting System has been developed at the Rossing Mine Open Pit, which calculates the total mining cost for each blast. In assessing the total mining cost for each blast, use was made of an.integrated planning and management information system to collect relevant production variables, current operating costs and survey data. An automatic image analysis system was employed to measure the fragmentation of the blasted material in the back of haul trucks. A shovel monitoring system is also under development for use in assessing the muckpile diggability and, in conjunction with an appraisal of shovel component reliability, to estimate the maintenance cost under various digging conditions.

There is today widespread concern about the future of the mining industry. In attempting to understand the underlying causes the paper probes in some detail, the long term structural changes affecting growth of metal demand and the development of excess mineral supply capacity. This examination reveals an industry characterised by an unfavourable combination of high barriers to exit and low entry barriers. While rising entry barriers are expected to herald some improvement in the profitability of mining over the next decade, this adjustment is likely to be slow and will require a more economically rational assessment of the industry by corporations and governments Alike.

This paper gives an account of the filling system at Mount Isa from surface fill production to stope discharge underground. A brief explanation of the surface facility and reticulation is given prior to the discussion on aspects of underground reticulation. These include fill hole types, pipe and breastplate installation, wear characteristics, etc. The different types of fill and their respective applications is mentioned as a prelude to a general overview of the mining considerations associated with fill placement and its role in the long term planning strategy at Isa Mine. Some practical aspects of stope preparation and filling procedures are outlined for the various stoping methods. Finally a brief outline of future fill developments is given.

The history of potential large scale development at Stawell in northwestern Victoria dates back to 1914, when Great Boulder Mines Limited, of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, took up options on some of the major mines in the Stawell Goldfield. Despite this and other attempts by various groups over the next thirty years, mining activity on the field gradually dwindled to the retreatment of old mill tailings.A static price for gold and indifferent drilling results prevented a major effort towards reopening the field until the late 1970's. A renewed exploration effort led to the discovery of sufficient reserves to justify installation of a carbon-in-leach gold treatment plant.

The Tolukuma Gold Deposit is hosted by metamorphic and volcanic rocks, and igneous intrusions. Dilatant structures for the main veining appear to be provided by post-metamorphic flexure/faulting; syn-mineralisation tectonics is recognised from the en-echelon patterns of much of the veining. A SSE trending structure containing high grade mineralisation has acted as a major dilational zone within or at the contacts of porphyry intrusions. An ESE trend has controlled numerous dilational structures splaying eastward from the SSE vein structure and containing medium grade mineralisation.Early hydrothermal activity (Stage I) is represented by unmineralised, pyrite-rich brecciation and fracturing. Associated chloritic veining is indicative of single phase neutral-chloride fluids upwelling in relatively low fracture controlled nenneahility

There are many factors influencing the way in which a mining company disposes of tailings. Some of the more important factors include physical and chemical properties of tailings, cost, availability of dam wall construction materials, type of mining operation, topography and environmental constraints. As a result, the mining industry has seen a diverse and innovative range of disposal methods developed to satisfy the many conditions imposed at tailings disposal sites. This paper discusses a range of tailings disposal methods currently practiced in the mining industries in North America. These methods include various inpit disposal techniques, upstream, downstream and centreline dam construction and zoned earthfill or rockfill embankment construction. The thickened tailings disposal method and the disposal of fine clays are discussed. The importance of improving the depositional properties of tailings to enhance storage capacity, water reclaim, dam wall stability and final reclamation is stressed. It is important that mining companies are made aware of the full range of disposal methods and dam construction techniques available today. Such an awareness will help improve the planning, design and construction of safer and more efficient tailings disposal facilities in the future.

Aberdare North Colliery is situated on the eastern boundary of the City of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Although the area is now noted for its wines and vineyards, the district has a long history based on coal mining. The richest coal seam in the Cessnock district is the Greta Seam, a low ash, high volatile steaming or gas making coal. The seam, up to 10 metres thick, extends over a large area surrounding the city of Cessnock and neighbouring townships such as Bellbird, Aber- dare, Kearsley, Neath, Ellalong, Kurri Kurri and Stanford Merthyr. The Aberdare Colliery, leases, which extend under Aberdare and Cessnock townships, were first worked in 1905 and continued developing pillar panels until the mine closed on 11 Nov- ember, 1960. Coal mining to this time consisted mainly of developing pillars to the 2.4 metre parting and, in some areas, dropping the top coal to the 6 metre parting, thus leaving the pillars intact, the top 1.8 metr-es of coal be- ing left untouched due to the high sulphur content. Advances in the development and application of in situ imaging of mineral processing operations using electrical tomography techniques are reviewed and illustrated with case studies relating to pneumatic conveying, mixing and centrifugal separation processes. The potential for applying these methods to full three-dimensional visualisation of the dynamic behaviour of flow in pipelines and separators, and the resulting consequences for process-modelling strategies, are discussed.

The Mount Lyell Company treats some 2.3 million tonnes of ore annually, mined from a number of orebodies on the field. Blended ore is essentially a quartz-sericite schist containing about eight per cent of pyrite and three per cent of chalcopyrite. Four-stage crushing and two-stage ball milling are followe by selective flotation for copper. Pyrite is recovered from the coarse fraction of dopper circuit tailings. A detailed survey involving examination. of 82 samples provided information on the size- by-size behaviour of the principal ore constituents throughout the grinding, copper flotation and pyrite flotation sections of the circuit. Results for the copper and pyrite flotation sections are presented in the paper, and it is shown that over half the copper reporting to the final tailing (5% of copper in the feed) is plus 100 microns and that the major pyrite loss is in the desliming cyclone overflow. These data proVide a basis for assessing potential methods of circuit optimisation.

In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred. Maximum recovery of sulphide minerals by flotation is achieved over a limited size range. Valuable particles above and below this range have a smaller probability of being recovered. In the normal grinding-flotation operation, not all valuables are reduced to the optimum size range, and therefore sub- stantial losses occur. A significant improve- ment in the size distribution is not usually possible within the conventional circuit, and a more complex arrangement may be necessary to obtain optimum recovery of the valuable mineral. This problem is considered with refer- ence to the Mt. LyeZl concentrator. The performance of the existing circuit is dis- cussed, and it is shown that losses in recovery occur in both coarse and fine sizes. Laboratory tests indicate that regrinding the coarse particles results in an increase in recovery of up to 4%. Redistribution of plant grinding capacity to reduce initial grinding power by 6% and use this capacity to regrind coarse particles was considered. It is con- cluded that overall plant efficiency would be increased by 2% provided that overloading of the regrind mill could be avoided.

In order that the processes seen may be followed in their proper 'order, the subject will be dealt with as follows, (1) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines; (2) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines Smelting Works; (3) Broken Hill Mines; (4) Concentration at Broken Hill; (5) Smelting and refining of Lead, Silver, and Gold at Port Pirie. The first acquaintance with the copper region was made at the Yelta shaft and dressing mill of the Parramatta Copper Mines Co. at Moonta. The country rock at Moonta is a hard, tough, felsitic porphyry, the copper lodes having a general strike of N. 30° Kilipping from 500 to 70°. This necessitates shaft-sinking on the lode, and underlay shafts are the rule on the field. The ore is raised in the Yelta shaft in wheeled skips, and consists of ·chalcopyrite, bornite, pseudomorphic hematite, containing, in addition, molybdenite and tourmaline. The ore from the bins at the brace is passed over a grizzly; the over-size is hand-picked into smelting ore, concentrating ore, and waste rock (00 attle ), which is sent below for filling. The under-size is elevated to a trommel having in. holes. The over-size falls on to a picking belt made up of lengths of rope strapped with iron, working over wooden pulleys.

The geological environments of gold deposits are reviewed in relation to the strong resurgence in exploration for gold since 1979. The resurgence is due mainly to New Zealand's geological endowment with gold and its history as a gold producer. Major past production was from Cenozoic placers of Otago and Westland, late Cenozoic epithermal deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield, and the respective Paleozoic and Mesozoic lode deposits of the Reefton and Otago Goldfields. These same geological environments are the targets of current exploration, mainly in extensions of previously mined deposits. On the Westland and Otago Goldfields alluvial and fluvioglacial gravel placers, mainly representing lateral and depth extensions of previously worked ground, are being mined and prospected. Gold production in 1984 was exclusively from these deposits, and the development of mobile concentration plants has resulted in a great increase in mining activity. Mineralised zones adjacent to previously mined lodes in the Hauraki Goldfield, Reefton Goldfield, and at Macraes Flat (Otago Goldfield) are being intensively explored. At Waihi (Hauraki), an open-pittable resource of about 10 million tonnes of ore has recently been delineated. Some new deposit types and little explored environments are also receiving attention. They include: gold-sulphide quartz veins hosted in an alkaline granite dike in west Nelson; hot spring type gold deposits in fossil geothermal (epithermal) systems of Northland, the Hauraki Goldfield and the Taupo Volcanic Zone; and marine placers off the West Coast where an area of auriferous gravels has been outlined near Hokitika. There is potential in known deposits and prospects currently being evaluated for a large increase in gold production by the early 1990s.

The InLine Pressure Jig represents a breakthrough in digging technology Its design incorporates a unique combination of features previously utilised in conventional jig design. In particular, a moveable screen and circular bed are used to excellent effect. However, a major design innovation is the encapsulation of the circular bed within a vessel - allowing the equipment to operate under pressure. This innovation eliminates free water surface, improves the dynamics within the separation layer (crossflow) and provides significant cost savings in the handling of slurries. Epithermal gold mineralisation was discovered at the Muyup prospect during regional reconnaissance exploration in 1986. Further exploration utilising routine techniques of stream sediment, panconcentrate, rockchip sampling and geological mapping resulted in the discovery of five auriferous vein systems located along northwest-trending fault zones. Scout diamond drilling was conducted on two of the vein systems. Mineralisation is hosted by a poorly exposed, mid-Tertiary volcanic inlier composed of intermediate and minor felsic volcanic rocks intruded by intermediate hypabyssal por- phyries. Gold is wholly contained in narrow steep-dipping hydrothermal breccias and quartz vein stockworks in which chalcedonic silica and fine grained quartz is the predominant gangue with minor adularia, carbonate, and sulphides. Alteration zoning is manifested as intense fracture-controlled silicification mantled by narrow clay-rich envelopes which in tam grade outward and downward into propylitic alteration or unaltered host rocks. Late advanced argillic alteration is superimposed on the vein-related altera- tion assemblages. Alteration assemblages and fluid inclusion data suggest that gold mineralisation occurred in response to episodic hydraulic fractur- ing and boiling of low to moderate temperature, dilute alkali-chloride fluids. The Muyup prospect represents the shallow eroded remnants of an epither- mal gold deposit enriched in Au, Ag, As, Sb and Hg. Low sulphur fugacities reflected by vein and alteration assemblages support an adularia-sericite classification (Heald et al, 1987) for this epithennal gold deposit.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to determine the distribution of gold between the products of lead-zinc concentrate smelting in the Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF). Bullion, speiss and slag from the ISF at Cockle Creek were used as the starting materials to evaluate the effect of gold and copper content of products on the distribution of gold between phases under conditions simulating those in the ISF hearth. The ratio of gold in bullion to gold in speiss has a mean value of approximately 1.6 and is independent of the gold content of the bullion. The distribution coefficient of gold between bullion and speiss is dependent on the copper level in speiss and is lowered by increasing copper content in speiss. The ratio of gold in bullion to gold in slag is in the range 25 to 5700 and dependent on the gold content of the bullion. For low gold concentrations in bullion of the order of 1 g/t and a bullion to slag ratio of 1:3 the gold loss to slag is expected to be approx- imately 23%. In all tests the gold in slag remained low, in the range 0.05 to 0.5 ppm provided metal prills were not suspended in Slag.
