Mount Isa Mines' Hilton Mine was brought into large-scale production in 1990/91 at a time of sharply falling metal prices. To ensure the operation's survival and eventual prosperity there was an urgent need to reduce operating costs and increase revenue. A target of a 40 per cent increase in productivity over five years was set. Strategies to obtain the required improvements were developed on the basis of greater involvement and increased contribution from the workforce, major changes to the mining methods and the development and application of new technology. This paper describes the organisational, operational and technological changes that have been implemented at Hilton and presents the results achieved to-date.

OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount Morgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operations the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be included, as it is necessary to understand the conditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout, the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan. In the oxidized zone the ore was of a friable nature, and in some cases rImning ground was encountered. In the lower levels the ground became heavier, and although the stopes were for the most part long, wide, high, and irregular, and not sectionalized, no difficulty was experienced in winning the ore, and no accident of a serious...

Melbourne Water (MW) is responsible for a section of existing gravity trunk sewer servicing the Melbourne central business district, Docklands, Port Melbourne and other adjacent areas, known as the Melbourne Main Sewer (MMS). MW has determined that the 2.2 km long 110 year old sewer will not adequately service these areas into the future or provide the level of reliability needed. The Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement project (MMSR) involves the replacement of the MMS with a new gravity sewer main and six key manhole shafts, known as the Melbourne Main Reliever (MMR).The majority of the MMR sewer tunnel is situated south of the Yarra River and will be constructed using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) and will be lined with precast concrete segments. The tunnel will be 2.4 m internal diameter and will have a 1.8 m diameter glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) sewer pipe positioned within it. This project represents the first large-scale, modern, mechanised tunnel project in MelbourneÆs Yarra Delta Quaternary sediments. There is little precedence known to the authors of similar scale tunnelling projects in these particular geological units. During the recent detailed investigation and design stages of the project, significant effort has been spent on characterising the geotechnical conditions along the alignment and predicting the effects of the new tunnel on the existing environment. Some of the key design issues that have been identified and managed through the design process include short-term surface settlement due to tunnel excavation and the predicted effects on surface infrastructure, potential spalling of the steel fibre reinforced concrete segments under full TBM ram loads and tunnel lining design in geological units with highly variable stiffness.Construction of the new MMR sewer tunnel is expected to commence in mid-2008 with a capital cost of approximately $160 million. Sewer system commissioning is scheduled for completion by early 2012.

Parameters affecting gold elution using the AARL process are reviewed and critically analyzed in an attempt to optimise metallurgical efficiency and minimise costs in both current and future carbon adsorption operations. Such factors as acid washing, column geometry, elution temperatures and pretreatment reagents are discussed together with eluant water quality and eluate flowrates. Hot acid washing of carbon prior to gold elution has many benefits. Besides improving elution efficiency when eluting with regional water, a hot acid treatment preheats the carbon without causing any gold leakage. Laboratory data indicated that hot acid washing reduces the mass loss of carbon during thermal regeneration. The eluate going to either zinc precipitation or electrowinning is also relatively free of troublesome impurities (organic contaminants and ferrocyanides in particular). Because of the chromatographic character of the AARL elution where an ionic strength gradient is used to inhibit the readsorption of gold, column geometry plays a significant role. While practical considerations and capital costs may restrain the length of the elution column, high length/diameter ratios are advocated in order to promote the plug flow of column eluate. From both a metallurgical and costing viewpoint, the two significant factors affect- ing the AARL gold elution are temperature and cyanide addition. High temperature and high reagent additions within prescribed limits will improve metallurgical efficiencies, but a balance between energy and reagent costs is required in order to minimise overall elution costs. As pretreatment reagents constitute a considerable portion of the total elution costs, both the addition and consumption of sodium cyanide must be carefully considered. Lower cyanide additions may be effective in certain instances, but the more practical use of 0,6 bed volume of a 2-3 per cent NaCN reagent containing 2 per cent NaOH is advocated. This is equivalent to an addition of 20-30 kg NaCN and 20 kg NaOH per ton carbon Treated.

Theoretical and experimental studies have been made-to clarify the physical and chemical behavior of the tuyere combustion zone of blast furnace. Gas streamlines around this zone were visualized by the use of the two-dimensional equip- ment. Close agreement between the observed stream- lines and the calculated ones is found. The three- dimensional experimental studies have revealed that there exists a so-called dry zone in the neighbor- hood of the raceway and the trickling liquid be- haves approximately like a continuum. A kinetic model is develdped to describe the behavior of coke combustion in the tuyere zone. The model is based on the reaction kinetics, the differential balances of heat and mass, and the mechanics of gas flows. Regarding-the-axial distribution of gas composition in the tuyere zone, good agreement is obtained be- tween the model prediction and the data observed in a working furnace by the other investigators. Cal- culated results-show that the maximum consumption of coke occurs at the intermediate region of the raceway. For the blowing of oxygen-enriched or high -humidity blast, the position at which the maximum consumption of coke occurs is shifted toward the tuyere nose. Similar effect is found when the par- ticle diameter of coke in the tuyere zone is de- creased. Prediction of rock cuttability by various excavation machines such as tunnel boring machines, road headers, rippers, picks, roller disc cutters, excavators, etc is of major concern to both civil and mining engineers and rock mechanics. In principle, the design of a rock cutting tool is based on achieving maximum excavation with minimum input energy, minimum applied force, minimum equipment weight and volume and, more importantly, minimum tool wear. When a rock material is indented by the force of a cutting tool and then unloaded several material zones form underneath and around the tool. As the tool moves into the rock the volume of its associated rock cavity (ie volume of displaced rock) expands and depending on the indenter's shape various phenomena may occur. Immediately beneath the tool a small zone in which the stress state is more or less hydrostatic, is formed which is underlain by an inelastic, or damaged, material zone. Both size and shape of this damaged zone control the magnitude of the indentation force and the chip formation mechanism during unloading. The rock is unable to store the whole strain energy induced by the tool and consequently the extra energy is expended either in forming new fracture surfaces and/or in plastic deformation in the damaged zone. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that both perfect-elastic and rigid-plastic constitutive models are not generally suitable for modelling indentation of rocks. In contrast elastoplastic constitutive models are more appropriate as they can include both elastic and plastic deformations (Kral et al, 1993). Elastic solutions for several half-space indentation problems can be found in most text books on elasticity and in particular in Timoshenko and Goodier (1951), Sneddon, (1951), Poulos and Davis (1974) and Johnson (1985a). If a failure criterion, eg the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is applied to delimit elastic solutions for indentation problems, a lower bound limit of the applied indentation force (for a given indentation depth) can be estimated. It may be noted that elastic analyses, without any delimiting failure criteria, normally overestimate the indentation force. Plastic solutions for a few indentation problems may be found in Hill (1950), Johnson, (1985a) and Alehossein et al (1992). When analysing the behaviour of indented rocks the choice of an appropriate constitutive model describing effectively the behaviour of the rock at various stages and phases during indentation is a challenging issue. Several questions need to be answered before starting an effective analysis. The first question is of course: Which one of these is more appropriate for modelling zones underneath and around a cutter, elasticity or plasticity theory, continuum damage mechanics or fracture mechanics, and what is the bridging link between these various theories? Which mode is more dominant in fracturing rock, tensile or shear mode? What governs the mechanism of chip formation? What is the function, shape and the behaviour of the pulverised zone that forms just underneath a cutter? Is the hydrostatic stress state assumption reasonable for this zone? How does the rock change during the absorption and dissipation of the input energy and how does the indentation energy vary with rock type and depth of penetration? How can we model the damaged zone under the indenter? Furthermore does a plastic material form beneath the pulverised zone? When and how do radial and ring cracks form around and under an indenter?

The securing of a reliable water supply for a prospective mine in the North West Queensland Mineral Province is usually one of the most influential factors in determining the mine's feasibility. The Ernest Henry Mine required a reliable water supply to serve a demand estimated at feasibility stage to be up to 20 ML/day. Numerous options were considered before a decision was made to construct a 113 km long pipeline from Lake Julius as this was the most cost effective, reliable source of supply. The North West Queensland Water Pipeline is a multi-user, Queensland government funded project initially supplying up to 7000 ML/year of water from Lake Julius to Ernest Henry Mine, with provision made for expansion to serve future users in the region. This paper discusses the history of the pipelineÆs development, together with a summary of the scheme's design features. Environmental and licensing requirements, construction and operational issues are also discussed.

Approval to operate Longwall No. 7 at Appin Colliery in 1979 was granted pursuant not only to the usual statutory provisions, but also that an adequate means of drainage of methane gas be incorporated. A methane drainage plant was subsequently designed and constructed some two km from the pit top at the site of the Colliery main upcast and down cast shafts. Modern plants of this nature are completely automated using programmable controllers and computers to provide control and management reporting functions. Complex mechanical systems are installed to extract the gas and in handling and storage processes. Gas utilisation plants exist which can generate power from methane. These plants are further enhanced by harnessing waste heat produced in the generation process. The installation, automation control and monitoring of these plants incorporates many facets of engineering from high voltage power supply and computer technology to complex gas handling procedures used in gas compression storage.and generation of electric power.

This is a case history of prospec- ting carried out by Comstaff Pty. Ltd. over the Pinnacles Area, part 4 of Exploration Licence 5/63, 9 km north of Rosebery in Western Tasmania. Evidence is presented to show that A 0 soil samp ling is a viable prospecting method for outlining polymetallic sulphide occur- rences in areas where leached organic/ glacial soils are common. Diamond drilling of low threshold anomalies has intersected base metal mineralisation.

Infrastructure is defined as all those parts of a mining development which are not directly concerned with mining and mineral processing. Infrastructure is of significant and growing importance in the overall develop- ment of mines, and the costs could be critical in determining the viability of a project. Prior to_project authorisation, feasibility studies are required, often in considerable detail, to determine costs with adequate reliability. It is necessary that the Engineer should be adequately briefed for carrying out these studies and that good liaison and communication with the Owner be maintained. Methods, costs, order of accuracy, and some special requirements of these studies are discussed. After project authorisation, rapid im- plementation of the proposals is generally desired. A suggested organisation and method for this implementation is presented and dis- cussed. Comments on fees, and particular points in the relationship between Owner and Consulting Engineer are given. Particular reference is made to differences in conditions compared with public works projects. Realistic attitudes of mind towards environmental matters, industrial relations, and contractual relationships are advocated.

With production at Olympic Dam scheduled to commence in June 1988, it has been necessary to install a complete underground ore handling system capable of removing two million tonnes of material annually from the mine. The system comprises mucking from stope drawpoints, truck haulage to underground storage, primary crushing, conveying and hoisting. On the surface, material is conveyed to stockpiles at the Metallurgical Plant. Mining of the numerous special excavations within the system was incorporated into the mine's ongoing development program prior to the underground construction phase. Utilisation of a decline from the surface enabled versatile construction equipment to operate at the underground sites as well as simplifying the transportation and delivery of construction Materials.

The Knelson Concentrator is a centrifugal gold concentrator developed in Canada, which utilises the combination of high gravitational ("G") forces and a unique fluidising action to efficiently recover free gold particles from minus 6 mm to fine micron gold in both alluvial and hardrock applications.Operating parameters including water requirements, fluidising pressures and feed rates are given, as well as an indication of their various effects on gold recovery.Results include a Colorado School of Mines Research Institute (CSMRI) report comparing the Knelson concentrator with various other gravity concentrators.

This paper describes how Western Mining Corporation uses sophisticated diesel equipment in mining of shallow flat dipping narrow ore- bodies in the Otter Juan area. Though in most cases the stoping method chosen relies on hand held conventional equip- ment, the 'ore handling systems have been designed to allow for a relatively high degree of mechanization. The use of diesel loaders, trucks along with three boom jumbos is described. A single one in nine decline driven as the means of access to the various ore surfaces at Otter/Juan resulted in the first ore being produced first 15 weeks after the first round was fired in the Ore-Decline. Now, three years later, the.mine is in full production, and in 1971/72 produced 392,000 dry tonnes of high grade Nickel Ore.

In the batch phase disengagement test, an organic and an aqueous phase are mixed together for a known period to produce a dispersion which may be either organic continuous (aqueous phase droplets) or aqueous continuous (organic phase droplets). The continuity of the dis- persion will depend upon the method of init- iating the dispersion, the conditions under which the system is operating, such as temper- ature and impeller speed, and the properties of the liquids, such as viscosity, inter- facial tension and solute content. Once the dispersion has been agitated for the required period, the agitator is turned off and the position of the coalescence interface and the sedimentation interface recorded as a function of time. This will produce a plot similar to Figure 1, where the overall dir- ection of travel of the droplets of dispersed phase is away from the sedimentation inter- face and towards the coalescence interface where the droplets coalesce with the homophase.

The Antarctic Peninsula consists of accretion complex sedimentary and volcanic rocks, talc-alkaline magmatic are rocks, marginal basin sediments and extension-related alkali basalts, dominantly of Mesozoic to Cenozoic age. Metallic minerals have been recorded at "250 localities but two thirds of these are innocuous occurrences of Fe+Cu accessory minerals. The remaining -70 localities are related to hydrothermal mineralization processes. Metallogenetic associations identified are: vein and breccia-hosted Fe+Cu+Zn+Pb+Mo or Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn, shear-hosted Fe+Cu, volcanogenic Fe+Cu and pegmatite-hosted Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn. Anomalous Au, Ag, As, W and Sb also occur but are not of economic interest. Metallogenic zoning is unproven and genetic models are uncertain, possibly involving volcanogenic, epithermal to hypothermal vein and porphyry-type systems. Substantial field and laboratory studies are required to understand distribution and Genesis.

Mining projects have long since presented challenges for the protection of the water environment. Lessons learnt from historical pollution incidents and increasingly stringent environmental controls have significantly improved the environmental performance of mines in developed countries. In contrast, water protection legislation and guidance in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) countries, based on the æpolluter paysÆ principle, has not promoted the prevention of water pollution, and examples of poor environmental performance in mining still exist. However, there is now evidence of emerging legislation encouraging the protection of the water environment. This paper provides an overview of water protection legislation in the Russian Federation and Armenia and highlights some of the challenges facing international mining companies developing projects. A mining case study is described, which highlights how communities in Armenia increasingly value their water environment. Here, greater public participation in development projects is playing a vital role in influencing water protection legislation. It is considered that public opinion and emerging legislation will increasingly present challenges for the development of mining projects.

Providing adequate airflow to effectively dilute and remove diesel pollutants in large mine working headings is a little researched area. A simulated diesel mucking operation was carried out in the Exxon Colony Pilot Mine in Colorado to establish expected levels of diesel pollutants in dead-ended working headings. This heading was nominally 15.3 m (50-ft) wide by 9.2 m (30-ft) high. Two face ventilation systems were tested using sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas to represent the diesel pollutants. The results of these tests showed that conventional face ventilation systems operating at high flow rates could adequately ventilate diesel equipment in the 447-522 kW (600-700 hp) range, even in a dead heading 91.4 m (300 ft) in length.
