The main objective of sulphide flotation in a cassiterite concentrator is to remove sulphide minerals (pyrite, pyrrhotite and sometimes chalcopyrite) from the ore prior to gravity concentration. Tin losses in the sulphide flotation stage account for a significant proportion of the total tin loss. separate studies of the sulphide flotation circuits of Renison Ltd and Cleveland Tin Ltd were conducted to investigate reasons for the tin losses. Sampling surveys were conducted in the rougher-scavenger and also the regrind-cleaner sections of both plants. In both plants, the rougher circuits recover excessive quantities of liberated cassiterite, while recovery of the desired composite cassiterite-sulphide fraction is low. The regrind mills are successful in liberating the composite cassiterite in the rougher concentrate, but at the expense of increasing the proportion of very fine tin mineral. The cleaner circuits recover between 40 and 60% of the cassiterite received, and this is all lost.

The Beruang Copper-Gold Deposit is located very near the centre of Kalimantan in Indonesia. It is a dacitic tuff hosted deposit currently being explored by Kalimantan Gold Inc of Canada. Exploration activity to date at Beruang has been focused on the Main Zone, which is defined by a north-south elongate, 1 + 1.5 km zone of anomalous copper and gold, and intense phyllic alteration. The disseminated sulfides responsible for the anomalous copper values produce a moderate to high chargeability signature. Phyllic alteration is overlain at high levels, and on the western edge of the Main Zone, by advanced argillic alteration. The dacite tuffs hosting the mineralisation are cut by post-mineralisation dacite dykes that are delineated by ground magnetics and geological mapping. Base metals, principally zinc and lead, form broad halos around the Main Zone. These metals are incorporated in massive NE-trending, polymetallic mineralisation that outcrops to the north and south of the Main Zone. IP survey results highlight the highly pyritic NNE-trending shear zone, which hosts most of the copper mineralisation in the Main Zone. A high chargeability anomaly at depth in the central-east part of the Main Zone is interpreted to be the source for mineralising hydrothermal fluids. This is suggested by zonations in alteration and mineralisation. A deep chargeability anomaly can be correlated with the downward plunge of a pyritic breccia, encountered at shallow levels in drillholes, and is a potential breccia pipe target. Compilation and inversion modelling of the IP results has yielded some interesting drill targets.

Gold mineralisation at the Globe Progress deposit is hosted by a geologically complex zone of shearing and brecciation, within a package of deformed metasediments. Mineralisation styles range from quartz breccias and lodes to sheared clay pug zones and disseminated sulfides. A review of the diamond drill core intersections through the deposit indicates that critical hanging wall and footwall contacts can be a combination of sharp or gradational; visual or non-visual boundaries. Approximately 60 per cent of mineralised contacts can be confidently identified visually, particularly where associated with veining, distinct brecciation or shearing, and high sulfide content. However, the gold grade and distribution of disseminated mineralisation can be extremely difficult to estimate visually, with implications for resource estimation and grade control when mining. Using observed drill hole geology and assays, a new geologically based model for the gold mineralisation has been constructed for the deposit to reflect the expected variability of the mineralisation contacts. This new model will constrain resource estimation and also serve to act as a predictive model when open pit mining commences. Nevertheless, careful grade control practices such as drilling, trenching and supervised extraction of ore will be required to maximise ore recovery and minimise dilution during open cut mining.

The Government Mining Engineer of South Africa has decided to legislate that Self Contained Self Rescuers (S.C.S.R.) become a mandatory piece of equipment for all those persons proceeding underground. It is envisaged that: * employees in underground coal mines will be fully equipped with S.C.S.R.s during 1988; * those persons employed in gold mines during 1988/89; and * personnel in all other mines by the end of 1990. It is the intention of this paper to discuss the introduction of these auxiliary life support systems, and to give an update on current market developments.

The Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace (ISF) of the Sulphide Corporation Pty Limited zinc/lead smelter at Cockle Creek, New South wales, has in recent years greatly increased its consumption of low grade feed materials, and as a consequence has experienced periods of unstable furnace operation. Routine examination of production sinter, including softening characteristics and micro- examination, showed that the problems had been caused by an increasing silica content in sinter. The silica entered a low melting point glass phase containing calcium and lead oxides. The relative volume of this phase increased until it formed a continuous matrix in the sinter structure and this made the sinter more likely to soften at lower temperatures. Premature softening caused loss of operating stability in both the shaft and hearth of the ISr. The required sinter structure for ISF smelting was found to consist of a network of intermeshing, refractory crystals which provided skeletal strength for sinter lumps even after the glass phases had begun to soften and melt. With an understanding of the importance of microstructure and softening temperature of zinc/lead sinter and the progressive identification of those factors in sinter production which affect the microstructure, a significant improvement in stability of operations has been possible.

The control system of a mine winder or other variable speed drive has many component parts that must work together to provide the required functional performance of the machine, together with comprehensive safety features, reliability, maintainability, user-friendliness and efficiency. Modern winders use digital control technology extensively and hence software design is a major part of the overall system. It is not practical to simulate an entire mine winder in a single computer model because of the sheer mathematical complexity of the behaviour of many of the components. However, most component parts can be simulated quite easily, and related parts of the control system software can be simulated. Such simulations allow control software algorithms to be developed and tested in isolation from the real plant. Tests can be performed on the model without fear of injury to personnel or damage to the valuable plant. For example, speed regulator control algorithms and stability settings can be adjusted to and beyond the limits of stable operation, and near optimum settings can be found. This is particularly important, for example, when designing closed loop controls for emergency brake systems. Obviously, care must be taken to ensure that the computer model of the plant is realistic and takes into account as many non-linear features of the real plant as possible. Pure mathematical analysis of some systems is very difficult to perform when non-linear plant behaviour is involved. This paper shares a number of practical simulation experiences performed using commercially available software such as Matlab and Simulink to simulate various parts of the control system of a mine winder or other variable speed drive. Demonstrations of the operation of several different computer models are shown during the presentation of the paper.

The main mining method employed at Mt Lyell is sub-level open stoping with a typical extraction level interval of 100 m and sub-level intervals of 30 m. Currently, pillar blasts provide the major portion of broken ore and firings are in the order of 200 000 to 300 000 tonnes while future firings of 500 000 to 300 000 tonnes are planned. Improvement of blasting techniques in these mass firings has been necessary for the following reasons. 1. Extremely wet ground conditions have adversely affected ANFO performance and placed extreme pressure on the charging and priming phases. 2. As pillar blasts increase in size the problems of wet ground conditions are accentuated resulting in very slow loading of wet upholes with cartridged gelignite and unreliable charging of the remainder with ANFO. 3 Fragmentation in pillar blasts has suffered because of the above, result- ing in increased secondary breaking costs and difficulty of extraction.

Formed in 1965 to investigate the bauxite deposits on the Gove Peninsula, in the Northern Territory of Australia, Nabalco Pty. Limited undertook to determine the feasibility of establishing a mining operation and alumina plant of at least 500 000 tonne/year capacity. The drilling programme undertaken and the analytical methods, assumptions and criteria used to define practicably extractable bauxite are described. The ore characteristics and the interpretation of results used to evaluate the reserves are detailed. The operating techniques developed in mining ten per cent of the reserves and variations experienced between indicated and actual mining are examined and discussed.

This paper describes the planning, analysis, design and operational experience of highwall mining based on auger drilling techniques applied to thick coal seams exposed in an opencut highwall. Being the first time such technology has been used in Australia, a large commitment to technical design and logistics planning was given by Callide Coalfields Pty Ltd. This commitment included technical and operations management and supervision, mine services, and the retention of consultants to undertake geotechnical analysis, instrument preparation and instrument installation.

A synthetic gold-silver telluride material (mainly sylvanite) has been prepared and its physical and chemical properties checked. Flotation tests using a Hallimond tube were conducted using commercial xanthate collectors. At collector concentrations of 10-3M with the addition of 5 × 10-4 M CUS04, no obvious differences in the mineral recoveries were seen irrespective of whether amyl, secbutyl, isobutyl or isopropyl xanthates were used. However, when the concentration of xanthate was reduced to 10-4 M or in the absence of the copper sulphate activator, the effectiveness of the collectors was in the order: amyl > secbutyl > isobutyl > isopropyl > ethyl. Changes in the slurry pH appeared to have little effect on the recovery of the telluride mineral.Leaching tests of the precious metal telluride showed that both gold and silver dissolve in alkaline oxygenated cyanide solutions but at a much lower dissolution rate than metallic gold or silver. Both leaching tests and electrochemical measurements indicate that the dissolution rate of gold-silver telluride is controlled by the pH and cyanide concentration of the leachant.Roasting the gold-silver telluride materials in air at temperatures between 550 and 750°C resulted in its decomposition into a metallic gold-silver alloy and tellurium dioxide.

As a part of the Newcrest, Telfer Expansion Project, a consortium of Australian, Canadian and South African Mining Contractors in joint venture have been contracted to develop the hoisting shaft. The parties namely; Byrnecut Mining Pty Ltd, Murray and Roberts RUC and Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd have combined their individual expertise to excavate the shaft. There is a particular emphasis on the use of proven shaft sinking techniques from North America and in particular integrating electric hydraulic drilling equipment and personnel from the Canadian Mining industry. The Telfer hoist shaft when completed will have a finished diameter of 7.1 metres and extend to a depth of 1170 metres below the collar. The shaft will be fully concrete lined and will later be equipped for hoisting ore from the Telfer deeps at a rate of five million tonnes per annum. The shaft when completed will be the largest shaft ever completed in Australia on a volumetric basis. This paper will examine the technical aspects of the shaft sink, as well as exploring the integration of personnel and equipment from the frozen prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada into an operation in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia. The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. Two industrial case studies in which detailed investigation of the flow behaviour of mineral slurries is used to assess the feasibility of pipeline solid transport are described. The first example deals with the pumping of highly concentrated bauxite tailings to disposal, while the second exam- ple examines the possibility of transporting high-density Victorian brown coal slurries which previously has been thought as uneconomical. It is demonstrated that these typical solid handling problems can be solved by a good understanding of the rheology of suspensions.

A new type of rockbolting system, the self drilling rockbolt, has been studied to develop a 'single pass' bolt for use in rockbolt installation in underground engineering. This single pass bolt forms the basis of a Rapid Face Bolting system which will reduce the amount of time spent in securing a roof during the operation of a continuous miner in the development of a panel.The installation efficiency and anchorage tests were performed in the laboratory on the self drilling bolt and the traditional resin anchorage. bolt. An integrated computer system (the Short Term Mine Management System) has recently been developed by B.H.P. Steel Long Products Division in Whyalla, South Australia for use in their open pit iron ore mines.The system incorporates blast design, comprehensive blasthole data handling, grade coilrol, stockpile scheduling and management and reconciliation within a single, user friendly computer package. The blast design system allows the blasting engineer to design the layout of holes for a production blast using geological information projected from the bench above to aid in appropriate blasthole positioniog in particular rock types. The grade control system allows mining blocks to be designed and evaluated from blasthole information using interactive graphics processes. The handling, storage and reporting of blasthole survey, assay and geological logging data forms an integral part of this system. Stockpiles can be constructed from a number of mining blocks to reach a specified target grade using the stockpile management system. Although not yet integrated, the reconciliation system will reconcile stockpiles back to mining blocks and to the geological model.

The post pillar cut and fill stoping method has been adopted by King Island Scheelite for the extraction of the main Dolphin orebody. The orebody is a massive, tabular deposit varying from 10 to 50 metres in thickness, and dipping at approximately 30¦ towards and under the sea bed. The mining method was selected for 1. maintenance of hangingwall support under the sea bed; 2. maximisation of first stage ore extraction; 3. flexibility of mining, allowing maintenance of grade and selective mining around waste bands within the orebody, and 4. compatibility of existing equipment both with stoping and the on-going underground mine development programme. Stope parameters were established on the basis of initial rock stress analyses, and since the undercut phase of mining the stoping programme has been monitored with various types of deformation measuring devices installed in a series of large diameter boreholes.

Comparatively recent Tasmanian legisla tion established a series of rigid control standards for environmental protection just as ma spectacular expansion of the mining industry was nearing completion. Upgrading existing protection to obtain the necessary licence to operate under these new regulations required further major works and involved a considerable outlay of non- productive capital at a time when escalating costs and falling metal prices were straining economic efficiencies to the limit. Late in 1974 a major environmental protection scheme was commissioned by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited at Rosebery on the West Coast of Tasmania. This 4 million dollar project was specifically developed by the Company ahead of and to meet the new standards for control of total effluents discharged from its zinc-lead -copper-pyrites mine and concentrator.
