The concept of large trucks underground has been around for some time. While the road train concept is gaining momentum, there are underground mining applications where these trucks have not been suitable. Unfortunately few of the ægreenfieldsÆ projects that are most suited to the road train concept have come æon lineÆ since the underground road train was first introduced to Australia in 2001 so that the trucks have generally been adapted to existing operations. As at December 2004, there were 17 road trains operating underground in Australia, one being rebuilt and one under construction. This paper addresses the necessity for the mining industry to have an integrated ore transport system that starts at the underground load haul dump unit (LHD) in the stope production area and finishes at the crusher feed at the processing plant. Chute and orepass designs are investigated, as well as feeders to determine the best load and haul system for large-scale trucking. The paper also discusses potential developments in the large truck scene. The paper highlights the cost and productivity gains by introducing large trucks and associated integrated ore transport systems underground. While 400 vertical metres was seen as the limit of vertical hauling in the 1970s, one kilometre is a common discussion point for trucking limits today. In real terms the cost of underground trucking (including ownership costs) has decreased from $1.50 - $2.00/t.km in the mid-1990s to $1.00 - $1.20/t.km at present.

In the last two decades, equipment used in the coal mining operations has become much more sophisticated. The way that work is organised and performed in the industry has also changed significantly. Changes in equipment specification or procedures inevitably means that the risk associated with that equipment or procedure also changes. In an attempt to address this the Joint Coal Board Occupational Health and Safety Trust (JCB) commissioned the University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre and Mine Site Technologies to perform a feasibility study into the development and deployment of Virtual Reality (VR) based training simulators in the New South Wales coal industry. The main aims of the study were to identify, the key providers of VR Technology, the VR options available to the JCB and the information that would need to be included in any simulator. It was anticipated that a critical assessment of these components would produce a format for a cost effective, state of the art simulator that could be readily accessed by all mines. The expectations of the feasibility study were that VR should offer three-dimensional (3D) simulations that are interactive, high-resolution models of real environments based on best practice Safety Management Plans. It was anticipated that the simulations would allow trainees to experience the consequences of poor decision-making and allow them to learn from their mistakes in a safe and forgiving environment. It was envisaged that such simulators would become an addition to the existing training methods used in the industry.

Significant developments in future mining systems, technology and best practices are emerging that are driven by issues relating to human resources, competitiveness, environmental and social responsibility, within the dynamics of globalisation. It is proposed that the definition of the role and attributes of the mining engineer in the mine life cycle needs to be viewed more holistically in the face of increasingly more diverse and complex responsibilities. These developments are motivating the need to consider a fresh approach to mining education and training at all levels for industry. A growing diversity and complexity of professional responsibilities is extending the mining engineerÆs broadly based skill set and reinforcing the need to play a central role within increasingly interdisciplinary teams. On the other hand, the imminent new technologies that will transform the mining process are prompting the assumption that more focused and specialised skill sets will be needed. A way forward is suggested that would first define a blueprint for the future mine, as an attempt to characterise the systems architecture, processes and organisation of the next generation mine. This can be the basis for assessing the nature of the workforce and distribution of responsibilities, from which can be inferred the skills and training requirements. In the context of the mining engineer, the paper explores how understanding such future requirements will enable more proactive development of a strategy for educational development. The paper then concludes by considering issues and lessons learned from some recent mining educational development initiatives underway in Australia and Canada that are shaping significant change.

Many underground mining methods rely on blasted rock moving under gravity to report to extraction points. Mining of orebodies dipping between 20 - 45 degrees poses a unique challenge for mining engineers in that a dip angle in this range will not allow the movement of broken ore down the footwall to the mucking horizon utilising gravity. This is more so in cases where the natural angle of repose of the rock is less than the dip of the orebody. Hence, innovative mining systems are necessary to mine this type of orebodies. In Australia, the method of uphole retreat panel stoping is commonly used to extract orebodies in the dip range of 20 - 45 degrees and thickness range of 5 - 15 m. In the Zambian Copperbelt a method called continuous retreat updip stoping is used for orebodies with similar dips and thicknesses. The mechanised form of this mining method has potential for application in the metalliferous mining industry in Australia. In this study a comparison is made between mechanised updip (MUDS) and transverse retreat stoping (TRS) methods. A hypothetical nickel sulphide orebody located in Western Australia is used as case study. The net present value for mechanised updip stoping is seven per cent higher than that of transverse retreat stoping based on the assumptions applied. Initial results of this study indicate that mechanised updip stoping can be adopted for Australian mining conditions. However, lack of significant local experience with the method is often cited as a reason for not adopting it even in situations where it is clearly the best option.

A design-led methodology offers a structured approach to R&D roadmap development, emphasising stakeholder engagement, collaboration, and alignment with industry objectives. By leveraging design principles, mining companies can ensure that their R&D initiatives are responsive to evolving challenges and opportunities, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Against this backdrop, the project aims to address the pressing challenges associated with sustainability and circular economy in the mining industry. Through the development of R&D roadmaps and the application of a design-led methodology, the project seeks to identify innovative solutions for enhancing resource efficiency, minimising environmental impacts, and promoting sustainable practices within mining operations. This paper highlights the collaborative efforts among Isle, the mining industry, and water utilities, which have yielded tangible benefits. The study demonstrates how the outcomes from the roadmaps outlined below effectively align research with strategic objectives, fostering innovation to address pressing challenges.

Peak Gold Mine is a new gold and base metal mining project being developed by Enterprise Metals (a 100 per cent subsidiary of CRA) at Cobar in the centre of New South Wales. The Cobar district has a long history of copper and gold mining operations stretching back to the 1870s. Extensive gold and base metal mineralisation was discovered at the Peak in 1981 below a series of gold mines which had been active around the turn of the century. Evaluation of the deposit through the 1980s led to CRA's decision to develop the project for production at a capacity of 450 000 tonnes per annum in late 1992. The project has been developed with a green fields approach despite the long history of mining in the local area. This approach has lead to several innovative ideas being trialed at the site which are expected to result in the operation being a low cost producer of gold and base metals.

The Meekatharra mining district lies in the northern pan of the Murchison Province of the Archaean Ynlgam block of Western Australia. Since dis- covery of the Paddy's Flat belt in the district in 1897 total gold production has been 67 tonnes and a further 33 tonnes in resources have been defined by drilling. The Paddy's Flat gold deposits occur within the Gabanintha Formation, a basal formation of the Murchison greenstone sequence containing komatiitic basalts, ultramafics and minor banded iron formations. The regional control on the distribution of deposits is an anastomosing shear belt which extends over 350 km and incorporates the Mt Magnet, Reedys and Meekatharra deposits. The following gold deposit styles may be recognized based on lithological association and alteration: Albite porphyry hosted, Carbonate-fuchsite- quartz alteration hosted deposits, Banded Iron Formation hosted sulphide replacement gold deposits and quartz vein deposits. With the exception of the banded iron formation hosted deposits, the Paddy's Flat alteration zone shows strong similarities to the alteration styles at Kerr-Addison (Ontario).

Technological innovations and emerging analytical capabilities are transforming the way drill samples are analysed, with real-time mineralogical analysis made possible. In addition, new business/technical requirements are challenging long standing processes to incorporate more sources of information during planning in order to improve compliance to plan during mining and processing. Unfortunately, the new sources of information that are added do not always have adequate protocols in place to ensure quality data is collected.Spectral data covering the visible – near – short wave – midwave – longwave range are routinely collected by the Geoscience and Exploration department at BHP Billiton Iron Ore for accurate mineralogical identification. These data are used for geological interpretations (logging and modelling) and prediction of physical variables (metallurgical and geotechnical properties).This paper introduces how sampling and quality assurance / quality control concepts have been applied in the spectral data process. As a result of the globally increasing consumer use of electronic devices, it is expected that pressure will increase on the supply chain of precious metals. Hence, recycling of these electronics becomes increasingly important, as well as optimising the current processes. One major issue in metallurgical processes is the amount of metal that is lost into the slag. This metal loss is inherent to the production process and therefore, additional processing steps such as slag cleaning may be required. Slag cleaning can be done in electrical resistance furnaces where heat is produced using the Joule effect, making the slag’s electrical conductivity an important operating parameter. Since slags are ionic liquids, the electrical conduction happens via the movement of ions which is called ionic conductivity. However, within the presence of transition metal oxides, a second mechanism of conductivity occurs as electrons are able to hop from one transition state to another, which is known as electronic conductivity. As ‘FeO’ is a common slag component in the non-ferrous pyrometallurgical industry, both mechanisms are present, but their proportions vary with the respective amounts of the two forms of the multi-valent ions and hence, with the oxygen partial pressure. The goal of the present study is to develop an experimental set-up and methodology for measuring the electrical conductivity of synthetic SiO2 – CaO – AlO1.5 – ‘FeO’ slags at various oxygen partial pressures.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The Middle Palaeozoic Gurvansaikhan Belt (Southern Mongolia) of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt is one of Central Asia’s most significant emerging porphyry copper provinces. The belt has become the focus of extensive exploration for porphyry copper-gold deposits over the last decade following the discovery of the giant Oyu Tolgoi porphyry copper-gold deposit. The Gurvansaikhan Belt is known to host porphyry deposits of Late Devonian (~370 Ma) and Early Carboniferous (~320 Ma) age. The characteristics of Early Carboniferous porphyry systems are poorly known compared to their older counterparts, despite their probable abundance and potential economic significance. Exploration within the Kharmagtai porphyry breccia complex has identified multiple cogenetic gold-copper-porphyry centres and late-stage mineralised magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias emplacement within a composite high-K calc-alkaline quartz monzodiorite intrusive complex. Early porphyry alteration and mineralisation at Kharmagtai are zoned around vertically attenuated early- and inter-mineral quartz monzodiorite dykes and stocks and comprises a complex sequence of calc-potassic, potassic and propylitic assemblages. Hematite dusting is a common alteration product that gives intrusions and the host rocks a distinctive pink-orange colour. Several of the systems have bornite-rich cores, where mineralisation is characterised by high gold grades (0.7 to >5 g/t Au) that zone outward to chalcopyrite-rich and then outer pyritic halos. Early stockwork mineralisation is overprinted by magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias. High-grade magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias form part of a major copper-gold mineralised breccia system with significant exploration potential. The Early Carboniferous porphyry copper-gold systems of the Gurvansaikhan Belt represent a substantial exploration challenge in an area of increasing exploration maturity. This paper summarises the characteristics of the Kharmagtai porphyry system that have helped to define the Early Carboniferous porphyry province of the Gurvansaikhan Belt and discusses implications for future exploration.CITATION:Stewart, A L and Baatar, M, 2015. In the raisebore industry, there are two known methods of removing large diameter reamer heads once the reaming of an underground shaft is complete: 1. Lower the reamer head to the base of the shaft and use a thermal lance to cut the drill string and drag the reamer away from the hole. This method exposes the person doing the job to falling rocks from the unsupported mineshaft, a hazard which is difficult to control and has caused fatalities. 2. Install breast plates in the backs above the reamer head at the top of the hole, and use air hoists to lift the reamer out of the hole. Steel beams are then placed across the hole which the reamer is lowered down onto, dragged forward away from the hole, disassembled, and removed. This method is time consuming, expensive, and complex in the controls required to ensure safe completion of the job At Carrapateena, the air hoist method had been successfully used, however, with the cost involved and the complexity of this process, development of an improved and fit for purpose reamer removal method was pursued. OZ Minerals collaborated with Pybar to develop an industry first application of Enerpac SL100 lift and shift technology; a track mounted system with hydraulic lifting units that can both lift the reamer out of the hole and tram it back along the tracks away from the hole. A key component of turning the idea into a reality was by establishing a truly collaborative relationship between client and contractor. When the SL100 mobile gantry arrived, it was set up in Adelaide and trialled with the whole raise bore crew attending the two-day workshop and risk assessment; a rare opportunity for drillers. There have now been five successful reamer removals with the SL100 mobile gantry at Carrapateena. It has proven to be an efficient process with the entire process from setup to demobilisation taking less than 48 hours. This new way has completely removed hot works and uncontrolled hazards from working at the bottom of a shaft. It has also saved the reamer stabiliser from being cut and thus wasted. Exposure to the open hole has been minimised significantly as assembly of the SL100 is completed well forward of the open hole. This new process is exponentially safer, quicker and cheaper.

The spatial modelling of geometallurgical domains is an important step in the characterisation of an ore deposit allowing for the quantification of various rock types, their differing rock properties and the overall value of a project. The traditional approach to modelling such features is through the use of deterministic models, where a single estimate of the extents and structure of the ore deposit is mapped out by geologists based on available data and their interpretation of the geological processes. Any uncertainty in the layout of different domains is not accounted for and heterogeneities of chemical and physical properties of the orebody are likely underestimated. Spatial machine learning techniques can be used to derive geometallurgical categories, or classes, from multiscale, multiresolution and high dimensional measured rock properties. Subsequently, geostatistical simulations of these classes can be applied to obtain multiple equiprobable realisations that define the layout of the geometallurgical classes at unknown locations between boreholes, or domains. In-turn these realisations can be used quantify the uncertainties in the location of boundaries between different domains. The development of a workflow for defining geometallurgical domains and later geostatistically simulating them across the Orebody H; a complex stratabound Bedded Iron Ore deposit located in Western Australia’s Pilbara region is demonstrated. This could be used to identify zones of high uncertainty where collection of additional data might help mitigate or minimise risks and in turn improve forecast production performances.

Pacific Hydro, a leading renewable energy company from Australia, is developing a series of cascading run-of-river hydro electricity projects in the Cachapoal Valley at the base of the Andes Mountains some 100 km south of Santiago in Chile.These projects involve extensive tunnelling and underground works. The first of these projects is called Chacayes (110 MW installed capacity) and is now under construction with Astaldi SpA of Italy and Fe Grande of Chile as the EPC contractor. Astaldi SpA also has an equity stake in the project. It involves 6 km of tunnels between 5 m and 7 m diameter, of which 2.3 km is by tunnel boring machine (TBM) (5 m diameter).This paper outlines the local and regional geology, the scope of the Chacayes project, actual tunnel excavation rates and support, and compares the decision making on Chacayes between a choice of traditional drill and blast excavation versus TBM.The paper also outlines the next project planned to be developed by Pacifi c Hydro in the valley – the 140+MW Nido de Aguila project involving a main tunnel drive of 11 km with two intermediate adits, plus a 388 m shaft and underground powerhouse. The main tunnel drives are likely to be excavated by two hard rock TBMs (5 m diameter) but will need to be able to withstand high overburden pressures of up to 1300 m.Subsequent projects in the planning stages include the downstream Coya II project with two tunnels totalling approximately 10 km, one of which may be by TBM.

The Olympic Dam mine utilises 1.1 m to 1.4 m diameter raise bores for generating the initial slot void for most production stopes. Slot raise bores generally span two development levels ranging from 30 m to 50 m in height. Raise bores are reamed upward and typically leave a cap of rock equivalent to two times the raise bore diameter on the drill level (minimum 3 m). This provides safe access over the cap for subsequent production activities. It is therefore critical to ensure robust falling object protection for personnel accessing underneath, and in the vicinity of the raise bore void on the lower level. Recently, a number of mesh failures have occurred at Olympic Dam as a result of falling rock from the underside of the cap and raise walls. In addition, as Olympic Dam transitions to deeper and more challenging ground conditions, rockfall-off onto the raise bore protection mesh is anticipated to increase in frequency. This paper discusses the evolution of raise bore protection mesh used at Olympic Dam and presents results from recent site-based drop testing. This impact testing was carried out using a built for purpose object to replicate point loading and shear failure of mesh wires. Testing was also carried out on an improved mesh design which utilises two layers of Geobrugg high-tensile MINAX mesh. Results from the drop testing suggest an improvement in performance of the raise bore protection mesh is realised with the updated design.

Yuanjing processing plant is a scheelite and wolframite plant in southern China. Water shortages and recent environmental regulations mean that the plant must reuse the wastewater that comes from the mining operation. This paper describes the efforts to reuse the mining and ore washing wastewater (MOW) in the processing plant. Initial attempts to reuse the MOW in the strong magnetic separation were unsuccessful because the magnetic media pack was seriously fouled by the micro-fine precipitate generated. The focus changed to reuse the MOW in the scheelite flotation circuit, which includes one roughing, one cleaning and three scavenging steps. Laboratory batch tests showed this would likely be successful because using MOW reliably improved the flotation performance in the laboratory tests. Then a 20 day industrial trial was run in the plant. The trial was very successful with the enrichment ratio of WO3 increasing from 17.4 to 23.6, while the recovery remained around 79.2 per cent. The industrial trial was so successful the company immediately adopted the new scheme, which has remained in use ever since. This technical solution not only alleviated serious water shortages, and satisfied environmental regulations but also improved the plant performance.

The passive interception and in situ treatment of groundwater using permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) has, within the past decade, become an accepted remedial approach to the control of plumes containing dissolved organic and inorganic contaminants. Since the first applications of the technology in the early-1990s, there have been several field-scale PRBs that have provided excellent treatment of dissolved metals in groundwater. Additional commercial applications and demonstration projects continue to be developed. Three field-scale applications and supporting laboratory columns have shown that several thousands of milligrams per litre of sulfate, more than 1000 mg/L iron, and several tens of milligrams per litre of other metals can be removed from groundwater by PRBs that promote sulfate reduction. The reactive materials, which incorporate various forms of organic carbon, promote microbially mediated sulfate reduction, the generation of hydrogen sulfide, and the subsequent precipitation of sparingly soluble iron and other metal sulfide minerals. Effective performance has been achieved by PRBs installed at a mine-tailings impoundment in 1995 (Sudbury, Ontario) and at an industrial facility (Vancouver, British Columbia). These PRBs have removed iron and other metals from groundwater. Similar materials were also used to create reactive layers within test cells directly in a tailings impoundment in 1999 (Timmins, Ontario) with the objective of removing iron and sulfate from the pore water before it migrates from the tailings impoundment. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been shown to provide excellent removal of chromium (VI) in a PRB, which was installed at the US Coast Guard facility in Elizabeth City in 1996, by reduction and precipitation reactions. Laboratory tests have also shown that ZVI reduces As(V) to As(III), which is subsequently removed from solution by co-precipitation with iron oxyhydroxides. In groundwater containing sulfate, ZVI and mixtures containing organic carbon can promote sulfate reduction and the subsequent precipitation of sparingly soluble arsenic and other metal sulfides. A trial PRB system was installed in 2001 and was shown to attenuate arsenic and other electroactive metals in groundwater at an industrial facility in northwestern Ontario. Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag, a waste material generated by the steel industry, has shown excellent potential for the removal of phosphate, elements such as arsenic and water-borne pathogens from groundwater in field and laboratory tests.

"Flotation of nickel sulfide ores are generally constrained by nickel grade and impurity concentrations (notably magnesium and arsenic) in the product delivered to smelters. Being a physical separation process, flotation recoveries and grades are limited by the grade recovery curve of a particular operation, where increasing product grades are invariably associated with lower recoveries. Impurities put further pressure on this relationship, as removal of impurities from the final concentrate is almost always associated with nickel losses.Western Areas Ltd are developing a proposed expansion to its Cosmic Boy concentrator to treat an impurity stream, that is high in nickel and would otherwise report to tails. Through the use of BioHeap® technology Western Areas aims to recover the nickel and discard the arsenic to tailings. This expansion will consist of a biohydrometallurgical plant that leaches the nickel arsenic minerals, removing the arsenic as a stable iron/arsenic hydroxide, while recovering the nickel as a high-grade nickel sulfide product (at approximately 50 per cent nickel). This can then be blended with final concentrate to improve nickel grades and recoveries, while simultaneously reducing impurity levels or used to produce high value products like nickel sulfate.The introduction of a small microbial leach plant may be beneficial to base metal concentrators constrained by impurities or grade.Citation:Fewings, J, Seet, S, McCredden, T and Fitzmaurice, C, 2016. The development and construction of the Grasberg block cave mine (GBC) is in progress, currently targeting initiation of caving in late 2018. Current production planning anticipates ramping up to full production of 130 000 to 160 000 t/d by 2027. As GBC approaches the production phase, there is a high priority on increasing the accuracy and level of detail in the production plan. The advance of the cave front directly controls the drawbell opening rate that is achievable. Therefore, an essential component of this plan is to produce an undercutting and drawbell sequence that honours the caving parameters that have been set for the mining blocks by the GBC production planning team.The PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine planning team and the Geovia caving business unit have developed a computational tool (Undercut Tool) capable of generating an undercutting sequence that follows a set of caving rules, such as advance rate per tunnel, maximum blasted area per period, control of lead-lag and shape of the undercut face. This tool also produces a drawbell sequence that honours the undercutting advance sequence, which is ultimately used to generate a life-of-mine production plan. This paper describes the inputs and outputs of the Undercut Tool that have been used to compute the long-term production plan for the GBC mine. It will further describe how the Undercut Tool takes into account operational constraints and geotechnical considerations that must be considered when developing a defendable production plan. Included is a discussion of the initial results of the planning outcomes from the tool; it will demonstrate how this work will support specific aspects of the plan such as the detailed undercut production drill and blast plans for the drill ring sequence, as well as how that plan will drive the drawpoint opening plan.CITATION:Villa, D, Brannon, C A, Dipas, C A and Vega, H A, 2017. "Suboptimal performance of clusters of hydrocyclones (cyclones), relative to the performance of the individual cyclones that comprise the cluster, is a common phenomenon. The primary cause is well known: uneven distribution of the slurry feed into the individual cyclones. The direct result of uneven distribution is that each cyclone in a cluster performs somewhat differently. Hence, some, if not all, of them do not work at their intended operating points, and the classification is not as sharp as intended. The impact on grade, recovery and milling efficiency will vary depending on the duty of the processing circuit, but the most immediately apparent consequence of uneven distribution is a difference in wear rates in the individual cyclones; this exacerbates the problems of unequal performance of the individual cyclones. In severe cases, and as differential wear proceeds, flows from the individual cyclones may become visibly different. Uneven distribution, once the phenomenon was identified, was seen to be a significant issue in the high-solids hydrocyclone cluster in the ball mill recycle section of Evolution Mining’s Edna May Operation (EMO, Westonia, Western Australia) gold processing plant. In 2012, a FloCEP® hydrocyclone feed distributor system was installed to alleviate the problem. Over the next four years of operation, this innovation has proven its value in the metallurgical and maintenance areas. Individual cyclones now wear at the same rate, greatly reducing the need for operator intervention, as well as increasing overall plant availability through minimising unplanned maintenance. The costs of the installation can be justified by savings in maintenance alone, though the greatest value, as is described in this paper, is in allowing the plant to produce consistently closer to its operational design limits. The FloCEP® system is a low maintenance, readily installed retrofit, based on two patented devices that are combined with complementary proprietary design methodology allowing customisation for specific flow rates and slurry particle properties. Since 2019, the mine planning team at Olympic Dam has been establishing and maturing a shift from deterministic to probabilistic scheduling techniques. This paper outlines this journey undertaken by the mine planning team, key learnings from implementation and further work required to increase the level of planning maturity. Olympic Dam (OD) is a highly variable, polymetallic orebody with a vertically integrated value chain from operations to final product. The processing plant has a tight set of quality constraints which are managed through timing of stopes from varying parts of the orebody. Value is eroded for the operation when forecasted quality of the mine feed encounters disruptions from unplanned changes to the timing of stope starts. As production has moved from the historic Northern Mining Area into the more geologically complex Southern Mining Area, average stope size has reduced, resulting in increased mining fronts required to meet production targets. This has created a problem of increased schedule complexity and difficulties in identifying and communicating resource priorities within a large set of individual stope critical paths. The problem was approached by considering each stope as an individual project constructed by teams working across multiple projects at any one time. The operation could then be considered a multi-project environment with shared resources and enables the application of Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) to the mine plan. Key to CCPM is the addition of time buffers to protect the critical path of a project form upstream or downstream processes. Implementation of time buffers protects the stope start date against compliance to plan variance. The monitoring of each time buffer consumption, as a proportion of total construction activities completed enables proactive prioritisation of resources. This resulted in an increase in the number of stopes starting in accordance with the mine plan, simplified communication of priorities to all levels of the operation, increased compliance to plan and a clear measure of schedule risk during planning routines.
