The Graham Farmer Freeway Project in Perth, Western Australia, is the largest urban infrastructure project ever carried out in the State. At a project cost of over $360 million, it also ranks as one of the largest in Australia and is even large by world class standards. The project provides a much needed east-west freeway bypass around the CBD of Perth, linking the Great Eastern Highway in the east with the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeway system in the west. The Bypass will have 6.5 kilometres of freeway, a major bridge over the Swan River, several pedestrian overpasses and underpasses, dual use paths, interchanges and flyover bridges and a rail tunnel. The whole project is being carried out over a four-year time frame, due to be complete and open to traffic in June 2000. The project has been divided into two stages, with Stage 1 including the 1.63 kilometre long Northbridge Tunnel, the subject of this paper.

A mining operation can be identified as demonstrating prudent management when a number of vital characteristics are evident.All risks and opportunities that are critical to the on-going success of the operation have been identified and are being effectively managed. All significant tasks and events are plan driven. All levels of management visibly support the policies of the operation through their attitude, behaviour and actions as well as words. Supporting evidence for required activity and the outcomes is readily available. Improvement mechanisms are working to advance the key business processes. Everyone is working towards satisfying the needs of the stakeholders of the operation. When these characteristics are integrated with the satisfaction of all legislative requirements, all industry codes and optionally all relevant international management system standards then an operation is fulfilling all the requirements of a Due Diligence Process. The majority of mining operations do not show all of these characteristics and therefore unnecessarily suffer from missed profit opportunity and constant cost pressure, less than acceptable safety and health and environmental performance and consequent poor relations with employees, unions and regulators. In these operations the characteristics to be observed are quite different.Serious incidents are occurring with no sign of a rate decrease. The operation lurches from one panic ituation to another. Management are absent in their leadership, but very active in developing rules and enforcement methodologies. The operation has no history. Re-inventing the wheel with employees who come and go at an alarming rate seems to be forever occurring. All efforts are directed at controlling the business outputs with a strong emphasis on blame. Everyone is trying to look busy to avoid the ever-present cost reduction threats. To change to more prudent management utilising a Due Diligence Process is not theoretically difficult. However it does take clear direction, focussed efforts, supporting actions with appropriate tools and perhaps most importantly an internal desire and drive to become such an operation. A Due Diligence Process is about doing the important things that have to be done, providing the understanding of why they are important, demonstrating proof of activity and effectiveness, and leading the way through effective management.

AustraliaÆs current interest in renewable energy is based on a desire to reduce the countryÆs greenhouse gas emissions. Wood from sustainable sources offers a unique opportunity to combine greenhouse gas benefits with other significant environmental and social benefits, including salinity mitigation, carbon sequestration, soil replenishment and rural industry. The challenge is to make renewable energy from wood in a cost competitive manner, so that this broad range of benefits may be best realised. Bioenergy and carbon products are of great interest as new, commercial forestry products that can drive large-scale environmental tree planting:In Western Australia, Enecon has worked with Western Power Corporation to build the first full-scale plant for integrated processing of mallee eucalypts, to produce activated carbon, renewable power and eucalyptus oil. It is intended that this plant is the first of a number of such plants to help catalyse environmental tree planting in Western Australia. New technologies being developed overseas may provide competitive bioenergy in areas where traditional markets for wood do not exist. For example, pyrolysis converts wood into a bio-oil that may be transported to remote sites for power generation in gas turbines. Pyrolysis also produces wood char. Pyrolysis and wood-to-ethanol technologies, coupled with short rotation coppicing trees, offer the long-term prospect of large-scale production of renewable fuels around the country.

The Queensland Department of Mines believes it is in the best interests of the gold mining industry to reduce and control the environmental impacts from gold mining since that is the community expectation.The Department of Mines has set as a special condition of many recently granted Mining Leases the requirement to submit a "Description of Operations" for the approval of the Minister, prior to commencing initial mining operations. In order to facilitate compliance by lessees with this condition an explanation is given of the reasons for this condition and how it is intended to achieve the objective of environmental protection.Environmental impact is operations dependent. Impact on a lease will vary quite significantly with the scale and methods employed. Before a lease can be granted and mined it is therefore necessary to have this information. The parameters of operations most critical both in terms of environment impact and economic viability are worked out and agreed with the lessee before the lease is granted. An approved description of operations which is required now, prior to the start of mining, provides the details of that agreement for the security and benefit of the lessee and the inspectors. It also provides the details of operations and environmental controls which were not required prior to the grant of the lease but are nevertheless required and necessary for compliance with the environmental standards.

The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag, the main system formed in the Ruhrstahl-Heraeus (RH) vacuum degasser, was measured at 1873 K to understand the effect of slag compositions on the carbon contamination in the ultra-low carbon (ULC) steels. The stable form of carbon was demonstrated to be carbonate by plotting the log [(wt%C)/aC] ratio against the log p(O2) which ranged -11 < log p(O2,atm) < -9. The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be estimated using thermodynamic model. The distribution ratio of carbon increased with increasing concentration of FeO due to the FeO reduction reaction and increased basicity of slag. The carbonate capacity of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be expressed as a linear function of the activity of lime and the optical basicity.

Coal bursts involve the sudden, violent ejection of coal or rock into the mine workings. They are a particular hazard because they typically occur without warning. During the past two years, three US coal miners were killed in two coal bursts, following a six-year period during which there were zero burst fatalities.This paper puts the US experience in the context of worldwide research into coal bursts. It focuses on two major longwall mining coalfields that have struggled with bursts for decades. The Utah experience displays many of the ‘classic’ burst characteristics, including deep cover, strong roof and floor rock, and a direct association between bursts and mining activity. In Colorado, the longwalls of the North Fork Valley (NFV) also work at great depth, but their roof and floor strengths are moderate, and most bursts have occurred during entry development or in headgates, bleeders or other outbye locations. The NFV bursts also are more likely to be associated with geologic structures and large magnitude seismic events. The paper closes with a brief discussion of how US longwalls have managed the burst risk.CITATION:Mark, C, 2014. The results of a two-year research study into the relationship between quartz dust levels in host material and in respirable dust in continuous mining sections are presented in this paper. The experimental design and sampling procedures for underground data collection are outlined. The sample analysis procedures for quartz determination, the analysis results and conclusions of the study are discussed.

In the mining industry, crusher-related incidents have led to 15 reported deaths in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA between 1998 and 2007 (NSW Government Resources Regulator, 2024). The majority of these fatalities occurred during routine crusher maintenance tasks. A survey of quarry and mine site maintenance staff was completed to ascertain what they thought of such safety device to understand if beneficial and if so reasons if unused. Overall, findings show, staff perceived risks differently, cost, familiarity, device awareness and not front of mind, influenced adoption. This underscores the importance of asking the right questions involving maintenance and safety staff to lead to more proactive risk assessment.

The GPM Gold Operation has been employing an Albion Process™ plant at its Sotk (Zod) gold mine in Armenia since 2014. Long term data from the operation is now being published for the first time. The data presented includes concentrate throughput, as feed to the Albion Process™ plant (tonnes per day), sulphur grade in concentrate (% S), total sulphide sulphur oxidation in the Albion Process™ plant (% SOx) and gold recovery from Albion Process™ plant residues (%). The data provides a basis for evaluation of the effectiveness of the commissioning, ramp up and operation of the Albion Process™ plant. Notwithstanding the impact of a slower concentrator commissioning than expected, the plant demonstrates Series 1 behaviour on McNulty ramp up curves, indicating successful commissioning and fast ramp up. Interrogation of the data and operational experience indicates that this successful operation is a result of a process that is flexible, robust and stable, one that was designed well based on solid testwork results and pilot plant trials during the study phase undertaken by Glencore Technology and Core Resources, and where the local operators were provided with appropriate training in operation of the plant. Air leakage through rock fractures in coal mining is a major cause of coal spontaneous combustion. In order to overcome the deficiency of the existing fire control technology and prevent coal spontaneous combustion by isolating coal from oxygen, the article proposes a novel technology of inorganic solidified foam (ISF) with high expansion to fill fractures effectively. ISF consists of fly ash, cement, setting accelerator, redispersible polymer powder, water and aqueous foam. For preparing homogeneous and stable ISF, a preparation system with a pore type foam generator, a mixer device installed with a hollow shaft and helical blades, air compressor, slush pump and monitoring instruments was developed, and the working principles of key devices were elucidated. Based on a series of experiments on the different ratios of each component material and technological parameters of the preparation system, ISF with a foam expansion ratio of 8~10 and dry density of 250–400 kg/m3 was prepared. The relationship between elastic compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and density was summarised. Based on the injection experiment for fracture of loose coal pile with high temperature, the characteristics of sealing air leakage, compressive strength, thermal insulation, flow and cooling of ISF in the fresh state were investigated, indicating that ISF can effectively cut off the air leakage and cover the coal sample to reduce the temperature in the earlier stage, and ISF can remain stable and not crack. The ISF was applied to Luwa coalmine to seal small coal pillar pressure fractures and loose coal fractures in goaf. After press-casting the ISF in Luwa coalmine, the pressure-difference of inner-outer increased, meaning the effect of external conditions on the pressure-difference decreased, showing that it could plug the air leakage effectively.CITATION:Qin, B T, Shi, Q L, Lu, Y, Zhu, C, Li, F L and Jia, Y W, 2015. Consultants in the mining industry have the opportunity to visit interesting deposits all over the world. Each deposit has its own set of challenges to face when it comes to defining and understanding the deposit geology and the economics to make it viable for extraction. Some of the challenges can include appropriate data capture, sampling techniques, structural characteristics, geochemistry, geophysics, lithology definition, and economic boundaries. It is essential that the practices used at each deposit (eg drilling, sampling, geological modelling, resource estimation etc) are documented and the results obtained are robust and defensible. The Competent Person is not always aware of instances where their resource estimation practices have not been substantiated. ‘You don’t know what you don’t know’ is a phrase frequently used during a mineral resource audit. Technical work to substantiate drilling, sampling, density, assaying, geological modelling and estimation processes is not always completed. Audited Competent Persons often comment: • ‘I was unaware that this was required.’ • ‘I have not had training in this area and do not know how to complete the checks required.’ • ‘This is how we’ve always done it.’ Examples of audits where it was found that geological practices were not substantiated are examined here. A discussion is included on why substantiation of these practices is important, and potential reasons as to why there are instances of unsubstantiated processes and practices are discussed.

The Australian mineral industry involves a diverse range of expertise and skills. Within that, the mining industry, representing mine planning, mine management and equipment operation, has capital intensive, high productivity equipment and a small but skilled workforce. Continuing education for all personnel in the workforce after formal school courses will be an important contribution towards improving competitiveness. The non-tertiary sector represents a significant proportion of the workforce and requires as much attention as the tertiary educated group. Competency Based Training is now being developed for the mining industry in Australia under the National Training Board and the mining industry is well represented in establishing standards and curriculum. TAFE is a major source of accredited courses but some mining companies are also developing internal courses not necessarily for external accreditation. Articulation of such accredited courses to tertiary mining engineering courses has been considered. The education and training of equipment operators through continuing education requires attention to operating skills, an understanding of the productivity factors under the direct influence of the operator and providing product quality to the customer. The education and training of mining engineers has been widely covered and continuing close involvement of the mining industry is required to ensure well balanced courses in technical and interpersonal skills as well as motivation to continue learning for life. Postgraduate research is a part of continuing education but the mining industry has to continually address the adequate recognition of post-graduate qualifications for the increased technical or management expertise and the development of better analytical and problem solving skills which can be directed towards improving competitiveness. More attention has to be paid to providing adequate financial incentives to attract suitable students, particularly after attaining some experience, and to address their professional career path with a company so they are not significantly disadvantaged by undertaking post-graduate studies. The Chartered Professional Engineer status as provided by The Institution of Engineers, Australia to qualified candidates is being considered by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as a further recognition of a member&apos;s specific expertise and competence in mining and metallurgical engineering. Continuing education plays a major part in the maintenance of the expertise and competence required for a professional engineer to develop and also to retain chartered status. Continuing education will be a significant part of the education and training of all the mining workforce towards improving the competitiveness of the mining industry. The major challenges will be the motivation of all towards lifelong learning and the integration of the various programs towards providing the opportunity for a steady and satisfying career progression.

Aqueous oxidation in an autoclave at ele- vated temperatures and oxygen partial pres- sures is applied to Philippine gold-bearing sulfide ores and concentrates which respond poorly to conventional cyanidation. The gold concentrates are recovered from ores and tail- ings material using the patented OMLI Process (the OMLI Process is able to upgrade tailings material analyzing 0.50 g/t Au to a concen- trate with a grade of 5 g/t Au or better). The results show that with aqueous pre- oxidation of the concentrates ahead of cyani- dation a four-fold increase in gold recovery is obtained compared with straight cyanida- tion. The observed differences in response to the pre-treatment step between various mate- rials are correlated with their mineralogical composition. The chemistry of aqueous oxida- tion is also presented.

The mining of Australia&apos;s rich and diverse mineral resources has been central to the development of the continent by "Europeans" over the past two hundred years. Mining has historically been encouraged (to varying degrees) by development-orientated state governments (the. managers of largely Crown-owned resources) and since Federation, by successive Com- monwealth governments (which have seen mineral development as a means of generating export revenue to fund predominantly social-welfare orien- tated budgets). This marriage of convenience between governments and the mining industry has to date served all parties well. However, Australia&apos;s entry to a new world economic environment at a time that community percep- tions are changing (owing to an education-inspired challenge to "old" values) is challenging the hitherto held assumption that mining develop- ment is always aligned with the well-being of the State and community. Issues such as the type and extent of State/Commonwealth government taxation, resource ownership and control, the environment, land use con- flict, the extent and desirability of secondary processing and infrastruc- ture funding are being debated in the public arena. Opponents of mining in the community are well-organised and are well funded, articulate and more importantly, they have effective communication channels with most governments, irrespective of political complexion. Apart from some television-orientated corporate image building and recent efforts by AMIC, the industry&apos;s response to this challenge has been unco-ordinated, poorly directed and arguably ineffective. Professionals working in the industry are concerned about the community&apos;s perception of themselves and their industry. Recognizing that the Australian democratic system ensures that, in the large, government at its various levels, is reflective of and responsive to the views and aspirations of people, the industry&apos;s response must be wide- ranging, equally articulate and couched in a form which is politically acceptable. New objectives in providing information to the public and its educators must be formulated. Moreover, professionals are looking for new directions from industry leaders. The Institute is well placed to facilitate this process.

Data management is a significant, but perhaps unrecognised, consideration for any organisation embarking on a geometallurgy program. While resource geologists are accustomed to dealing with thousands or millions of samples and their associated assays, metallurgists and mineralogists have traditionally carried out only a few expensive and complicated tests and consequently tend to manage the resultant data in spreadsheets. The emerging discipline of geometallurgy arrives with significant challenges as a result of the sheer volume of data generated. As an example, the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program has generated more than:60&nbsp;000 physical subsamples analysed for up to 30 analytes; 25&nbsp;000 spreadsheet-based laboratory test results; 30&nbsp;000 sized fractions analysed via QXRD, MLA and/or QEMSCAN;multiple external providers of data, and more than seven terabytes of data. Considerations for any geometallurgy data management system include storage space, data integrity, accessibility, traceability (sample provenance), maintenance and ease of use, integration with data providers and the ability to modify the system to adapt to changing requirements. Further, aspects of a geometallurgy program, such as conducting a range of tests on one sample, producing subsamples such as concentrates and tailings, compositing and routine QA/QC may not be well handled by existing software and providers geared to standard geochemistry, mineralogy or metallurgical test programs. The development of a geometallurgy database using existing software (AcQuire), and the associated file management system will be described for a large geometallurgy program at Olympic Dam. As with many aspects of geometallurgy there is no approach that meets the needs of every site or program. Recognition of data management as an issue, a structured approach in the program planning phase and commitment to executing the strategy will increase the chances of successfully mining the geometallurgical data.

The studies of pulp electrochemical flotation separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite were made from the thermodynamics, mineral natural oxidation rate, property of mineral surface oxidised material and pulp electrochemical flotation tests. The results showed that although pyrite and arsenopyrite possessed similar thermodynamic stability, significant differences of two minerals were observed in natural oxidation rate, property of surface oxidised material and its influence to dixanthogen formation on the oxidised mineral surface. Based on the non-thermodynamic differences, the pulp electrochemical flotation technology was successfully used to separate arsenopyrite from pyrite in pilot test.

Although the &apos;exi&apos;stence of bauxite in Australia has been known for many years it is only recently that exploitation has commenced.. of the two most&apos; important` deposits, strangely at almost diagonally opposite tips of the continent. Recognition of the importance. of the bauxite in the South/West corner came about initially through the efforts of a well-known Australian mining company which,` with some outside financial help, tackled the early exploration with commendable foresight and courage.

Access to the vast volume of exploration data available in the Geological Survey Division of the Department of Mines would be impossible without the use of modern computing methods. These data are used by geologists in the early stages of exploration activity and methods of access to those data by the mining public are discussed. A regime of the Department&apos;s current hardware and applications software usage and possible future developments to enable more efficient processing of administrative matters and the production of maps using on-line graphics are included.

Alfred Nobel first invented a practical detonator in 1863 and then the blasting cap in 1865. At that time the detonator was used on the end of a length of safety fuse to initiate nitroglycerine-based explosives. Since then the detonator has gone through a number of changes. The instantaneous electric detonator was the first to allow remote firing. The electric delay detonator followed and allowed for timing between holes. In the mid 1970s the NONEL« Tube was invented. This tube combined with NONEL« detonators meant that many of the safety issues, such as stray current and radio frequency, associated with electric delay detonators were eliminated. This system gave the mining industry a reliable and fairly accurate system with which to detonate shots of any size. Since the early 1980s a large amount of research and development work has been done around the world to create a more accurate detonator for the mining and quarrying industry. After years of research, electronic detonators have emerged as the most accurate and precise initiation system available to the mining and quarry industry today. Electronics provide the user with millisecond timing accuracy. The improved level of timing control allows operations to improve fragmentation, throw and reduce vibration levels. There are now a number of different electronic detonator suppliers on the market today. In 2004 Dyno Nobel formed a joint venture called DetNet with AECI. DetNet has a suite of electronic detonators: DigiDet«, HotShot« and QuickShot«. This paper will focus on the HotShot« system, the first of the three new initiation systems to be released to the market in Australia by Dyno Nobel.
