Most of South AfricaÆs high-grade iron ore resources are hosted within a fault-controlled structural basin in rocks of the Palaeoproterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Iron mineralisation occurs as individual orebodies in fault-bounded basins or as fold-controlled concordant lenses around an unconformity plane above the Kuruman Banded Iron Formation. The Sishen mine near Kathu and the beeshoek mine and Sishen South deposit near Postmasburg lie on the northern and southern border of a major domal structure known as the Maremane dome, respectively. The effects and structural constraints of at least three orogenic compressive episodes and several intermittent extensional episodes on the formation, erosion and preservation of iron mineralisation on the Maremane dome and surrounding environs were investigated. Ventersdorp impactogenal rift basin development at ~2.78 - 2.64 Ga, finalised with the deposition of the volcano-sedimentary Vryburg Formation during the thermal subsidence stage at ~2.64 - 2.6 Ga, and was followed by tectonic quiescence/stability and an extensive marine transgression across the entire Kaapvaal craton. The drowning event led to the formation of a carbonate platform with the deposition of the Schmidtsdrif and Campbellrand subgroups conformably above the Vryburg Formation at ~2.6 - 2.52 Ga. The initiation of distal (to the west of the Kaapvaal craton) off-craton oceanic rifting, causing submarine volcanism and associated hydrothermal activity, led to the deposition of initially manganiferous chert (Wolhaarkop Formation) followed by banded ironstone formations (Manganore Iron/Kuruman Formation) of the Asbestos Hill Subgroup at ~2.52 - 2.46 Ga. Initial passive margin rifting along the N-S oriented western edge of the Kaapvaal craton, initiated at the end of Ghaap Group time (during Koegas Subgroup deposition) at ~2.46 - 2.35 Ga, formed a prominent system of N-S striking, westerly dipping normal faults. Easterly directed crustal compression in post-Ghaap Group time in response to the Kalahari Orogeny (accretion of Rehoboth craton along western edge (Kalahari suture zone) of the Kaapvaal craton at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ma led to the formation of large-scale regional, N-trending F1-folds. Partial to complete inversion of the Koegas passive margin rift system (ie reverse dip-slip reactivation of the N-S striking normal fault system to high-angle reverse faults and dextral strike-slip reactivation of the Ventersdorp rift system developed in the Archaean basement), was followed by uplift, erosion and formation of a regional angular unconformity (Postmasburg unconformity). Uplift was accompanied by deposition of fluvio-glacial sediments of the Makganyene Formation (Lower Postmasburg Group) within an intracratonic peripheral foreland basin setting unconformable above Ghaap Group strata at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ga. Post-orogenic crustal relaxation and rifting caused extensional reactivation of the N-trending Palaeoproterozoic passive margin rift system and NE-trending Neoarchaean Ventersdorp impactogenal rift system, forming a fault-controlled depository for the volcano-sedimentary Upper Postmasburg Group at ~2.24 - 2.1 Ga. Deceleration in rifting was succeeded by thermal subsidence of the Upper Postmasburg Group rift, erosion, formation of a regional angular unconformity and deposition of clastic sediments of the Lower Olifantshoek Supergroup unconformable above Postmasburg Group strata at ~2.1 - 1.93 Ga. Renewed rifting led to the deposition of volcano-sedimentary units of the Upper Olifantshoek Supergroup within a rift system superimposed on the Postmasburg Group rift depository at ~1.93 - 1.83 Ga. Easterly directed crustal compression during the Kheis Orogeny at ~1.83 - 1.73 Ga led to renewed inversion of rift structures of the Postmasburg Group and Olifantshoek Supergroup depository, N-trending F2 folding and thin-skinned thrusting of older rock units eastwards over the cratonic cover, thereby utilising planes of weakness in the strata such as prominent unconformities and lithological contrast boundaries as principal dTcollements. NNW-directed crustal compression in response to Lomanian (Namaqua-Natal) Orogeny at ~1.15 - 1.0 G along the southern margin of the Kaapvaal craton, resulted in minor sinistral strike-slip reactivation of the N-S striking fault system, the formation of extensional NNW-SSE striking fracture/fault zones and the development of ENE-trending F3 folds forming a F2/F3 fold interference pattern. Post-Lomanian tectonic events (eg the Pan-African Orogeny at ~650 - 500 Ma, the Cape Orogeny at ~310 - 240 Ma, and the Gondwana breakup at 205 - 120 Ma), caused only comparatively minor extensional reactivation of the pre-existing fault systems. Iron mineralisation was ultimately preserved from erosion by Kheis Orogeny-related N-trending F2 synclines and Lomanian Orogeny-related ENE-trending F3 synclines, in particular areas of interference between F2 and F3 synclines representing comparatively deep semi-circular trough- like depressions, as well as in half grabens formed adjacent to reactivated westerly dipping N-S normal faults. Support for relating the iron and manganese mineralisation to structurally controlled hydrothermal fluid flow during the Kheis orogenic event has also been found, and ongoing research is aimed at confirming and refining the hydrothermal model for iron ore mineralisation in the Northern Cape.

In May 1991, AZSA commissioned a new conventional Cell House. This paper focuses on the major improvements introduced in the design and the construction of the equipment, machinery and control. An effective control system together with good reporting and routine operation has resulted in quality control of the Cell House at the highest possible level. Consequently the monthly current efficiency consistently averages above 93 per cent with a total energy usage of 3000 AC kWh/t of cathode zinc. The new concept for the year 2000 and beyond is introduced.

A gold mine in southern China has transitioned from an open pit operation to a fully underground mine. An overhand mining method is used which requires the mined stopes to be filled with backfill having an unconfined compressive strength of at least 0.35MPa. Tailings from the process plant is deposited into separate flotation and Carbon in Leach (CIL) tailings storage facilities. The tailings has a high fines content and the thickener on site could only produce a dilute flotation tailings at a solids content of about 30 wt%. This resulted in two undesirable outcomes: the density of flotation tailings in the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) was significantly lower than planned so that the TSF could not store the life of mine tailings and that the backfill product had to include a high percentage of manufactured aggregate and increased cement content to achieve the required strength. This paper presents results of a tailings study which identified that the flotation TSF would be capable of storing the remaining life of mine tailings if an amended backfill product made up of 100% of flotation tailings could be introduced. A 100% tailings backfill with the addition of 8% cement was developed by classifying the tailings and using the coarser fraction in the backfill. This backfill allowed 60% of the flotation tailings to be placed underground and only the remaining 40% in the flotation TSF. A new thickener was designed and installed to thicken the tailings and rheological testing of the tailings, using a closed loop pilot plant, provided parameters to upgrade the underground reticulation system to deliver cemented backfill to stopes throughout the mine and to deliver thickened tailings to the TSF. Low-grade, porphyry copper type mineralization at the Moonmera prospect is related to the intrusion of a granodiorite porphyry mass into the Upper Permian "Gracemere granodiorite". Significant copper mineraliza- tion appears to be associated with the alteration assemblage quartz-sericite- kaolinite. The ore shell is surrounded by a zone where montmorillonite and kaolinite are in greater abundance and this assemblage is over- lapped, mainly at depth, by potassium feldspar alteration. Secondary biotite is abundant throughout the mineralized zone. Preliminary sulphur isotope results on the sulphide mineralization are compatible with a magmatic origin for the sulphur.

A new lead refinery with a. capacity of 230,000 tons per year com-menced operation at*Port'Plsie in October, 1959. This plant' superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of thecontinuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content, created difficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was under-taken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic'zinc is now recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is then carried out by batch'treatinent with caustic soda yield-ing lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes have replaced continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. As the final stage is a .batch process the product composition can be.checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to,consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment has allowed the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs. This, together with the high purity of the lead, has assured the B.H.A.S. position in world markets.Automatic control systems have been extensively employed particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.

Data Metallogenica (DM) is unique as a global mineral sample collection and deposit database with over 70 000 rock samples and a wide range of descriptive, photographic and measurement data. Subscribers have access to approximately four gigabytes of on-line data with many examples included on the public pages. DM commenced its life on the Pacific rim in 1971 and much recent growth has focused on countries of the Pacific margin, particularly Australia, Fiji, Chile, Indonesia and Peru. Approximately 600 separate deposits and mineral occurrences in this region are represented in DM. The sets of rock samples have been photographed at high resolution and included on the web site, together with unpublished descriptions, deposit cross-sections, bibliographies, field and mine photographs, petrology and reflectance mineralogy. Figures and abstracts from PhD theses are a new addition and the donation of proprietary databases by companies and individuals is an encouraging trend. DM increasingly is being viewed as an acceptable and important repository for æfragileÆ and irreplaceable personal and company data, it is also being recognised in its true light as a high level information system, not solely a collection of rock samples. Data Metallogenica is a not-for-profit venture of AMIRA International that requires self-funding from December 2004. Growth and development must be funded entirely out of subscription and sponsorship revenues because no government subsidy is provided. The Pacific rim is in the mainstream of mining and exploration activities worldwide and those involved have much to gain from a dynamically sustaining DM. Emulsion explosives are a common industrial explosive and have a non-ideal detonation behaviour. The detonation performance for a given product changes with the charge diameter, ground conditions, con?nement and density. The burning process of an emulsion explosive has been modelled with an ignition and growth model in the LS-DYNA code. The parameters in the burning rate function are calibrated by the detonation velocities and the detonation front curvature radii from emulsion explosive tests. A Perl program was developed for an efficient estimation of the parameters, and the results show that the calibrated parameters can predict both detonation velocities and the detonation front curvatures.CITATION:Yi, C, Nyberg, U and Johansson, D, 2015. The necessity of effective dust suppression measures during excavation work is just as uncontroversial in tunnelling as it is in mining. In many respects, in fact, the applied technology is comparable. Notwith- standing, given more careful appraisal, it becomes evident that very different starting conditions exist in both these fields: In mining, there are for instance, well organised firms, which in many cases have been active for several decades, carrying out the required drivage and winning operations - and although there are also experienced firms in tunnelling, these generally speaking form a joint venture in order to accomplish a certain project. These "tunnelling firms" which are formed for a short term, normally only exist for a period of two-to three years. They con- stantly reorganise themselves: from the site supervising engineers by way of the foremen and shift overseers to the gangs working on site. The "firm's headquarters" are also re- located when a new project is started up. Then of course, there is often pronounced fluctua- tion among the crews of a single tunnelling project. Seen from this point of view, a safety expert in tunnelling has a far more difficult task than one in mining. He has not the advantage of knowing every corner of the mine for years if not decades on end, of being familiar with the overall organisation of the enterprise let alone knowing many of the men at the face. This ideal prerequisite for effec- tive decisions pertaining to suitable measures for industrial safety and accident prevention taking all weaknesses into consideration given the interplay of the most varied system com- ponents, can practically only be arrived at in mining.

Traditionally, the term ætotal systemÆ design applied to comminution conjures images of a design that addresses the usual business and operational drivers, including health, safety and environment (HSE), capital cost, operating cost, throughput and product size. In terms of the physical process, the mine to customer type studies also exemplifies an approach that satisfies a normal ætotal systemsÆ approach. As an industry there are drivers that are forcing a re-consideration of what we regard as our total system. This modification of drivers will require changes in approach and implementation to provide the best solutions. Some of the major changes that impact the drivers are shortage of skilled personnel, changing social attitudes to remote mine site work, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), quality of available orebodies and geographical location of new mine sites. One approach to the challenges presented by the changing business environment is to expand the system envelope around comminution to ensure that comminution, in its widest sense, helps to meet the new realities. Background to the new drivers and constraints is provided and some of the appropriate responses are examined in relation to the impact on the total system.

Australia today is one of the leading countries in the fields associated with the mineral industry, an industry which accounts for over 50% of overseas income and revenue to government. This is no accident. In order to be competitive in what was recog- nised very early in the country's history as a highly profitable busi- ness, the Australian mineral industry (mining, extractive and refining metallurgy) has traditionally been very innovation con- scious, a characteristic which has been evident from the begin- ning of the industry or very nearly so: Australia's geographic isolation and the dispersion of the mineral industry over wide distances made an exchange of ideas difficult and often impossible. One needs only to look at the inaugural address given by Sir Henry Ayers, the first president of the then Australasian Insti- tute of Mining Engineers, in Adelaide on 4th April, 1892 (1) "There is probably no other pursuit which depends more on its productive development and profitable results than in the extent and application of the scientific and mechanical knowledge possessed and exercised by its manager." and "Having in view the value of the mining industry of Austral- asians, they should be urged to apply their best skill with all the scientific and mechanical knowledge obtainable to its future development."

Most mineral products exported from Australia to Japan, with the notable exception of coal, are purchased with weight and quality determined on discharge. Sampling of imported minerals for purpose of payment is done at facilities owned and operated by the purchaser. The selling shipper is represented at the weighing, sampling and testing by an independent inspection group who supervises the whole procedure. Sampling and testing are done within the provisions of the contract between the two parties, and normally in accordance with the relevant Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). These JIS specify such things as the number and mass of increments to be taken; the practice of taking these increments; the method of determination of moisture, size distribution and quality. The JIS concerned with sampling however, are meant to be basic guides rather than rigid rules. Hence sampling and testing practice varies from plant to plant. In general Japanese sampling facilities and methods are elaborate and efficient. Opportunity is given for the discussion of varying technical viewpoints between consumer and shipper. However the resolution of differences and the implementation of changes normally takes a long time. Such discussions seem best reduced by prior contract agreement on reasonable specifications and detailed testing methods. The independent inspectors

Northeast of Brazil is situated in the polygon of drought. It covers some very important states like Bahia,Pernam- buco, Paraiba, Rio Grande do Norte, Cea- ra and Piaui , which have a potential for mineral production. Of them the main contributions that comes from Rio Grande do Nor to , Ceara and Paraiba are the scheelite and im portant quantities of granitic pegmatite mine- rals like tantalite-columbites, micas, beryls, precious stones, lithium minerals etc. On the other hand flourishing mineral economy in gold, tin, emeralds, chromium, lead, apatite is most- ly from Bahia; and potassium, salts, and petro- leum are from Sergipe, Alagoas and Bahia res; pectively. The most interesting aspect coninues to be the nucleus of the drought zone constituted of the Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba and Ceara sta- tes.The first two authors have worked for twel- ve years in the region and have dedicated atten tion and time to two systems, namely skarns and granitic pegmatites. Their mineralogy,petrogra- phy, geochemistry, origin and economy is being worked upon from time to time to accompany the progress that is being achieved both in the sec tors of geology and economy. Besides, during the field campaigns, evidences have been sought to find the best guide horizons for mineralisa- tion and options for the location of target areas and prospection methods for scheelite, tantalites and other pegmatite minerals.

The torsion test is considered as the best test used when the part is subjected to static or dynamic torque. Many published papers have investigated the torsion of non-heat treated metals. However, very few published papers dealt with the torsion behaviour of heat treated metals. The aim of this work was to study the effect of heat treatment on the torsion behaviour of steel alloy (AISI 01), which can be used for manufacturing small and medium drills, taps and reamers. The diameter of specimens used was 15 mm. The metal used was heat treated under different conditions, then torsionally tested. The results of torsion test were divided into two groups: results obtained during elastic limit from which the shear stress, shear strain and modulus of rigidity were calculated, while from the results obtained during plastic limit the plastic depth was calculated by applying derived equation when the angle of twist was more than yield value. The results obtained indicated that the value of hardness alone is not sufficient to establish heat treatment conditions. Rather, it was found that the determination of plastic depth together with hardness can help in the establishing of the optimum condition which was hardening temperature of 820¦C, hardening time 20 minutes and tempering temperature 220¦C. This condition produces hardness of 60 HRc and plastic depth of 2.5 mm.

The Rotary Kiln at TeKumi was commissioned in February 2002. The process involves burning limestone at 1000 - 11 000¦C to produce a burnt lime (CaO) product. This paper describes the design and installation of a trifoil system to improve the energy efficiency of the kiln. An energy balance showed that 32 per cent of the energy was being lost through the flue gases, compared to 5.8 per cent in shell losses and 2.5 per cent lost as heat in the product. The trifoil proved to be the best way to tap the energy from the flue gases. Drying tests showed that a trifoil improved the drying time of limestone by 37.5 per cent, compared to only 25 per cent for a lifter system. The trifoil system increases the surface area for heat transfer in a Rotary Kiln by 180 per cent. The overal energy efficiency of the Rotary Kiln was improved by 15 per cent, resulting in a 15 per cent increase in production and an 80¦C reduction in flue gas temperature. This has reduced dust build up in the ducting while reducing maintenance costs through a reduced fan speed. The trifoil hub was designed with tooths at the centre to prevent shifting. Each trifoil leg has an anchor block on the down side to prevent downward movement of the trefoil legs.

High precision GPS systems for mining are accurate to within a few centimetres. Typical systems consist of one or more GPS antenna, GPS boards, sensors to detect the position of the blade or bucket of the machine radios to pick up correction signals, a computer to control the system and a display screen to give instructions and information to the operator. GPS systems offer two benefits û they give information to the operator to get his job done faster and more accurately and they can send information to management about how the job was done. On dozers, GPS systems allow the operator to accurately complete earthmoving jobs with no survey pegs. On hydraulic excavators the systems can be used to accurately locate the position of the bucket teeth for selective mining. On blasthole drills the systems can guide the operator to each hole and record accurate as-drilled plans. By reporting the position of the blade or bucket in three dimensions it is possible to continuously upgrade a mapfile of the excavation. From this file it is then possible to report productivity numbers in real time. High precision GPS works best with a minimum of five satellites visible. This may be difficult in a pit. Systems which also access the Russian GLONASSS satellites offer significantly better uptime. GPS systems will become indispensable for efficient mining operations in the future.

THE following paper is a description of the plant and operations of the above company in their recovery and treatment of the quartz tailings deposited as final residues by the various mining companies. at Waihi, Karangahake, and Waitekauri into theOhinemuri River. During the past few years the silting of the Ohinemuri River has increased to such an extent as to cause considerable interest and discussion, and has lately been the subject of a most extensive inquiry by a Royal Commission, to consider the best means of dealing with what is generally spoken of as a public nuisance.Ever since the commencement of mining in this district, which was opened as a goldfield in 1875, the various mines operating have been discharging their tailings into this river, it having been proclaimed a sludge channel in 1895. Up to the year 1900 the quantity of quartz crushed was not large, probably not exceeding 500,000 tons; but since that date the annual tonnages discharged have increased enormously, and at the present time would total from 550,000 to 600,000 tons per year. Records show that up to the end of 1910 at least 5,000,000 tons have been crushed, for an actual yield of bullion considerably exceeding £10,000,000 in value, and all the valuable tailings from...

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Martabe gold mine is Indonesia’s largest precious metals-only producer and is also one of few significant hard rock mine developments in the past 15 years. Martabe is located on the west coast of the island of Sumatra in the North Sumatra province. The mine commenced operation in mid-2012, producing over 280 koz of gold and 1.5 Moz of silver in its first full year of production.Martabe consists of a cluster of six currently identified high-sulfidation epithermal deposits. The deposits lie in a north–south corridor with an approximately 8 km strike length and 1.5 km width. The total Measured, Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate of the deposits is currently 8.2 Moz of gold and over 75 Moz of silver.The exploration program at Martabe has added more than 2 Moz of gold and 15 Moz of silver to the Mineral Resource estimates (Measured, Indicated and Inferred categories) since G-Resources acquired the project in 2009. This has been achieved at an average cost of US$17 in exploration expenditure per ounce of resource added, which includes helicopter-supported drilling programs in rugged forest terrain.The factors that led to this exploration success at Martabe include: in the first instance and most importantly, recognition of the geological potential of the mineralised system continually updating and improving ‘orebody knowledge’ and applying new ideas to the exploration program ongoing engagement and consultation by world professionals with geological expertise in similar systems ongoing executive management support for the program the high quality of work completed by previous owners a strong focus on quality control, staff development and operational safety, with the JORC Code (in particular Table 1 of the Code) as the underlying basis for quality control continual and positive engagement with government, community and other external stakeholders.This paper will discuss in detail the first of these two factors. Alliancing is a contractual relationship in which organisations with an interest in a project are brought together in an atmosphere of co-operation to produce superior results to benefit all of the participants. Fundamental to the concept is the management of the risks associated with the project. The traditional risk management strategy adopted by clients has been to transfer this risk to others in the belief that this will result in the lowest overall project cost. It is assumed that competition in the market place will allow these risks to be transferred without paying a premium. However, this approach often results in the development of an adversarial climate, a high level of litigation, time and cost overruns and an overall poor project outcome. Under an alliancing arrangement the parties (client, designer and contractor) are aligned through shared interests in the projectÆs success by linking profitability to performance. Under such an arrangement, an atmosphere is created whereby the participants are motivated to focus on cost-savings, pursue best value and to innovate. Successful alliancing can result in highly motivated project teams and realisation of extraordinary productivity and cost-savings flowing from increased efficiencies. The situations in which alliancing can be successful are discussed with particular reference to the Wandoo Alliance which successfully completed the $375 million Wandoo B offshore oil platform in record time and with considerable savings to the project budget.
