Broken Hill is situated at an elevation of approximately 1000 ft. above sea-level, on the Barrier Ranges, in the State of New South Wales, Australia. It is approximately 700, 280 and 330 miles from the ports of Sydney, Pirie, and Adelaide, respectively.The summers are usually hot and dusty, with a recorded maximum shade temperature of 114° F. The rainfall averages approximately 9 in. per annum.

The Hall-Hoult process is likely to be the dominant method of aluminium production for the remainder of the century. The characteristics of the operation of a modern smelter are described and attention drawn to their disabilities which are due chiefly to the small production capacity of individual cells.The principal components of the Hall-H6roult cell - the electrolyte, the anode and the cathode - are discussed in order to identify the problems of scale-up. The factors influencing current efficiency and energy consumption are analysed and lead to the conclusion that the greatest potential for energy saving lies in reducing the anode to cathode distance (ACD).The most promising direction for major change is in the application of a new titanium diboride - carbon composite for coating of the surface of the cathode carbon. It improves the wetting of the carbon by aluminium and should permit the use of sloping cathodes and anodes. The deep metal pad would thereby be eliminated and, in the absence of magnetic perturbations, the ACD could be substantially decreased.The construction and testing of a full-size "Low Energy Cell" is scheduled for early 1986 and is expected to reduce energy consumption in aluminium production by about 15%.

Underground mining of gold-silver bearing quartz lodes was carried out in the great mines at Martha Hill, Waihi over 70 years from 1882 until 1952. Shafts and stopes reached a total depth of 600 m on 16 levels, with workings extending laterally some 1.6 km, and as new reefs were discovered the workings extended beneath parts of the township. Over their long life the mines produced 1217 tonnes of gold-silver bullion from processing 12.2 million tonnes of mined ore. In the early-1980s drilling proved large reserves of gold and silver ore remaining in stock-work zones between the previously mined lodes. This led to a new era of mining at Waihi with the opening of the Martha Hill open pit in 1988. A series of three sink holes have formed above unfilled stopes of the Royal lode. In 1999 a sudden collapse crater 40 m in diameter occurred near an occupied part of Waihi, placing in danger several houses and a busy street. This crater formed close to a similar crater that occurred in 1961. The 1999 collapse resulted in subsurface investigations and risk assessment studies being commissioned by the local Hauraki District Council. However, a further 50 m diameter collapse crater in December 2001 formed in a residential area, swallowing and wrecking an occupied house, fortunately without injuring its five occupants. Two other houses were perched on the crater rim. The 2001 collapse led to an acceleration of the work being carried out by the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Ltd. (GNS) to identify the extent of the old underground workings at Waihi. For the risk assessment detailed rock mechanics analyses were made to consider the stability of the underground mine stopes, in terms of the stope back, hangingwall, footwall and crown pillar failure mechanisms, as well as void migration. The collapse crater areas were analysed using using several methods, including analysis to simulate the probability of void migration from unfilled stopes to the surface using the @Risk program. The analyses show that in the cases of the actual collapse craters, the voids have a high probability of migrating to the surface, thus providing a method of testing the void migration modelling. Modelling analysis applied to the remaining stopes of the old underground mines show there are further areas where void migration from unfilled stopes has a high, medium and low probability of reaching the surface as a collapse crater. The locations of these probabilistic hazard zones were outlined using the @Risk modelling and deterministically by using the dimensions of the historical collapses applied along the length of the stopes. Consideration of the æincubation periodÆ (the time interval between the cessation of mining and the occurrence of collapse) and comparisons with mine subsidence histories overseas, indicates that further collapses are likely to occur over the next 50 years. Risk assessment estimates made using property values and occupancy levels within the three hazard zones, were compared with Societal and Individual Risk criteria. Results indicate that safety within the high and medium zones may be unacceptable.

"Anglo American Thermal Coal conducted a high level study of all of its underground collieriesto determine if there were electrical power saving opportunities at the main fan stations.A systems approach to electrical power savings was used to identify potential savings in the various components of a primary ventilation system. Furthermore, only technological interventions were considered to obtain electrical power savings. From generic technological driven electrical power saving strategies four energy savings strategies were identifi ed, namely potential overall reduction in ventilation volume, improved underground air utilisation, optimisation of fan-set effi ciency and potential fan drift design optimisation. The study indicated the colliery (say Colliery D, Shaft A) that showed most potential in the four technology driven energy savings strategies. A detail study was undertaken at Colliery D, Shaft A to increase the confi dence level and the study confi rmed that up to 45 per cent of the main fan absorbed power can be saved (475 kW) with an estimated capital payback period of 18 months. The study clearly showed that an integrated approach to optimise the entire mine ventilation system has great potential for power saving, and that a clear, well -defi ned methodology will be applicable to similar underground collieries. This paper discusses the background to the study and the process followed to implement the energy savings initiative at Colliery D, Shaft A."

Gold production from The Granites - Tanami Goldfield during 1993 is expected to exceed 8 t, eclipsing that of the traditional Northern Territory gold mining districts of Tennant Creek and Pine Creek. This is the result of dedicated and successful exploration, and the consequent discovery of new orebodies such as those at Dead Bullock Soak.Following granting of access to regional exploration areas in 1988 and identification of favourable host rocks in the Schist Hills area, North Flinders Mines (NFM) began a methodical exploration program of detailed geological mapping, rock chip sampling, costeaning and various types of drilling. The first resource of 600 000 t of 3.3 g/t gold was announced in mid-1989. This has grown progressively with systematic exploration to the currently published resource inventory of 6.6 mT @ 5.4 g/t, (as at 31.12.92) contained in six separate orebodies within the Dead Bullock Soak Mineral Lease at Schist Hills.

In recent years rapid advances have been made in the technology used for hydrology and erosion modelling of rural catchments. These advances have been driven by the growing availability of digital terrain maps that can be used to automatically define catchment properties that previously had to be manually extracted from contour maps. In addition, these models have, in principle at least, more powerful predictive capability. The author is involved in a number of projects to migrate and further develop these models for application to mine rehabilitation assessment. Current technologies for hydrology and erosion assessment (eg CREAMS, ANSWERS) are reviewed, underlying principles highlighted and deficiencies in the context of mine rehabilitation design assessment addressed. The advantages and disadvantages of the new digital terrain map tools (eg WEPP, SIBERIA) are discussed. Current work integrating these new models with existing rehabilitation design tools (eg ACIRL's ARGUS computer package) highlights the advantages of an integrated approach using digital terrain maps; cheaper, faster, lower impact and more flexible rehabilitation design. The use of novel visualisation tools to aid the design process is discussed. The paper is illustrated by applications to mine sites in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Mineral commodity prices are subject to volatility over both the short and longer run – driving fluctuating operating margins for mining companies over time. Such market dynamics influence mine operating decisions depending on the interplay of company-specific and mineral market factors. The company factors include corporate financial strength and price-risk management strategy, as well as mining practices and methods at the operation level. The critical mineral market factor is the price of the ex-mine product. This results from underlying microeconomic and macroeconomic root-causes pertaining to mineral supply and demand, in addition to the activities of financial participants within commodity markets.Significant changes in commodity prices of an extended duration, either up or down, remain the principal influence upon mine economics – and therefore on mining practices too. Accurate and precise forecasting of commodity prices (and of relevant exchange rates) continues to prove elusive both to mineral economists and market analysts. Thus, at any given point in time, there are often widely differing price forecasts available for both the relevant commodity and currency. Companies as a result are unclear how to respond in practical operating terms to such price-side uncertainty – other than to manage incremental capital and operating expenditure. Typical company – and industry financier – responses to the difficulty in predicting future mineral commodity prices are to take measures to manage uncertainties in mining project revenues and costs. These operating practices are prudent – yet come at an economic cost: that is, lost revenue and margin opportunity is inevitable in any such system not easily capable of responding to price volatility in the market. The mine of the future will seek to capture this lost economic opportunity. This paper documents the development of a user-friendly computational program, which has been constructed to assist the mine ventilation engineer in the optimal design and operation of methane drainage ranges. In the past, many computer tools for ventilation engineers led to the development of `research systems'. These computer systems, although developed with the needs of the industry in mind were due to a combination of inexperienced programming methods and the availability of suitable user interface software not easily accessible to the practising engineer. Recent developments in computer hardware and software (particularly windows based graphical user interfaces) mean that engineers no longer need to dedicate large amounts of valuable time to become familiar with often complex items of software. The authors of this paper intend to demonstrate a practical system which successfully integrates complex mathematical models, an easy to use interface and knowledge based techniques. The graphical interface guides the user to draw on the screen a mimic diagram representation of the methane drainage network. The user is prompted, during the construction of the drawing, to input the information and data required by the calculation and knowledge based procedures. The computer program then calculates all of the flows, purities and pressures throughout the network. Given reliable measured data from an existing range a comparative analysis can be performed between the predicted and measured network flow data. A knowledge-based system may utilise this analysis to either update the operational status of the network or suggest either a reasoned maintenance or remedial strategy to improve the performance of the drainage system. The development of the OMEN project has been carried out at the request of the Midlands Group, British Coal Corporation, Edwinstowe. The system is about to be field tested at a number of mines. It is hoped that when this paper is presented that the system will be used at both Group and mine level.

The need for quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) in the sampling and assaying of minerals is fundamental to the reliability and confidence of a mineral resource estimate, reserve estimate and possibly profitability of a mine. In spite of this, QA/QC practices in the mining industry are commonly applied poorly, or misunderstood. As New Leaders, we should aim to correct the poor practices and become fully informed on appropriate procedures. This paper uses worked examples that show the usefulness and importance of best practice QA/QC procedures. Fundamentals of reviewing the performance of the laboratory by examining the results of client inserted standard reference material (standards), blank material and duplicate samples are discussed. To do this, three examples from Australian data sets have been used. For each example, simple and efficient plotting techniques are suggested with subsequent evaluations of each plot. The first case study compares the results of internal standards from a laboratory with blind standards (where the expected value is unknown to the laboratory) submitted by the client. It was demonstrated over time that the laboratory was unintentionally analysing the internal standards in a different manner to the remainder of the sample batch. In this example, not understanding the cause of a high negative laboratory bias could have led to poor understanding of the depositÆs grade and in the extreme a proposed mining operation may have reached operational stage with a subeconomic grade. The second case study discusses the quality of blank material submitted by a mining operation to monitor cross-contamination within the laboratory. The blank material contained background levels of the element under investigation. This created uncertainty in the assay results, which could have led to the need for additional assays and drilling programs. Finally, the third case study demonstrates the use of the relative paired differences (RPD) technique to cross-validate the results from duplicates and repeat analyses from two laboratories. The three examples given show either laboratory or operational error. If left undetected, each example could have had serious implications for the mineral resource estimate and ultimately, the mining operation. These examples are not isolated occurrences; poor QA/QC practices are an industry wide problem exacerbated by rapid staff turnover and increased contractor positions on-site. New Leaders must be equipped with a thorough grounding in QA/QC best practices to improve its application and confidence in the results of sample analysis.

SITUATED in the county of Manchcster, in Northern Eyre's Peninsula, the Iron Knob ore-deposits form the basis of the industry. These deposits are connected by the Iron Knob tramway to the port of Whyalla, aal miles distant, on the western shore of Speneer Gulf,and to-day another tramway is under construction to link up with the same port, a second group of iron ore leases known as Iron Baron, which is situated 18 miles south of Iron Knob. Fig. 1 indicates the geographical relationship of these three places, Iron Knob, Iron Baron, and Whyalla, which together comprise this field of the company's activities.

Oakbridge, in combination with its joint venture partner, Nippon Steel of Japan, is expanding its Bulga underground and open cut mines to meet the growing demand for coal in the Asian market. Expansion works underway will see the Bulga underground mine become a world leader in underground productivity, the introduction of a high capacity dragline into the open cut mine (largest capacity dragline in NSW) as well as a major upgrade of the coal preparation plant (CPP) and coal handling facilities (CHF) to process the increased production. This paper describes the planning and implementation of this major expansion program and highlights the rationale behind some key aspects of the program.

This paper presents an overview of the strategy adopted to bring the Ballymoney opencut lignite deposit to an advanced stage of mine design and confidence. Certain aspects of the project differentiate it from the normal Australian experience. These include the thick overlying glacial drift, the proximity to established infrastructure and the wide fluctua- tions in annual lignite demand. The incorporation of these factors in the mine plan are discussed. The deposit area is located near the town of Ballymoney, in Northern Ireland. In July 1986, after winning an internationally competitive tender, Meekatharra Minerals Ltd commenced an exploration programme designed to delineate reserves to supply a 450 MW power station. In less than eighteen months, a complete evaluation was undertaken and a price submitted in December 1987 to the relevant authorities for the supply of lignite. Subsequently, UK government consultants and significant inter- national banks have endorsed the findings. The mining study commenced with the evaluation of various develop- ment strategies, followed by selection of the most viable mining method and equipment. The equipment selected will mine four million tonnes of lignite and eleven million cubic metres of waste each year. In year 15, the waste removal requirement increases to almost seventeen million cubic metres. This results in an average strip ratio over the mine life of three cubic metres of waste per tonne of lignite. The quality of the product delivered to the run of mine conveyor transfer point, based on maximum resource recovery, will include heat content of 8813 kJ/kg (3789 Btu/Ib), ash content of 28% and moisture content of 40%.

This paper describes the application of a three-dimensional finite element modelling tool to help assess the stability of a highwall at a Central Queensland mine following the weakening of its base due to highwall mining. With traditional stability assessment techniques, likely failure modes are identified on the basis of previous experience and structural, sedimentological and geomechanical data and a mechanistic analysis of these individual modes is performed. The value of the full three-dimensional model over these traditional techniques is that it provides a coherent approach to assessing highwall stability without the necessity of initially deciding upon the dominant failure mechanism and gives a useful adjunct to the traditional tools. The three-dimensional model assumes the rock mass is made of elasto-plastic blocks, incorporating possible planes of weakness, separated by near horizontal joints. The model includes the relaxation of stresses due to the excavation of the highwall and incorporates estimates of blast damage near the highwall surface

THE exceptional rainfall characteristic of the West Coast of Tasmania, in conjunction with the rugged topography of the district, has always suggested the utilization of water-power, and from the earliest days of the Mount Lyell Company theeventual installation of a hydro-electric power scheme, making use of some near-lying lake, has constantly been kept in view. At the period of the inception of the company, however, the time was not ripe for such an undertaking, and it is only oflate that the various important considerations involved have sanctioned incun;ing the heavy expenditure necessary, with the positive assurance of permanently reaping the benefits expected. The West Coast of Tasmania contains many lakes of varioussites; situated at high levels, and, although the catchments of these lakes are not very extensive, still, the excessive rainfall is so constant over long periods that its regularity may be relied on as offsetting the limited catchments. The explanation of the abnormal rainfall is simply the circumstance that the West Coast Range forms the first high land barrier which is met by the moisture-laden westerly and north-westerly winds blowing off the Southern Ocean. By the time the clouds strike the mountains they ride very low, consequently the elevation of the range, the peaks of which do not exceed 3000 to 4000 ft. above the sea, is sufficient to cause a copious precipitation. Lake Margaret, which is situated five miles north of the reduction works, was first recognized as a possible source of waterpower by Mr. Hugh Ohrisp, a surveyor, who visited it about 1893-4. South Africa has a long history of rockbursts, some 100 years. During this time much research and many developments have taken place in the country to limit the occurrence of rockbursts, and to mitigate their effects. In this paper I shall present a personal view of what I consider to be important achievements, and contributions made. Some of these are: planning of stope layouts, and the use of strike barrier pillars; recognition of energy as a key factor, the use of the energy release rate ERR as a layout planning criterion, and development of MINSIM for calculation of ERR and stope planning; sequential grid stope layouts; use of backfill for stope support; and, development yielding support elements, and dynamic testing of stope and tunnel supports. The record shows the establishment of a rock engineering research powerhouse over a 40 to 50 year period and, unfortunately, the complete breakdown of this capability in the subsequent 10 years. Smelting is a process in which heat is applied to ores to produce metals. Impurities are removed by segregation in the slag, or converted to gases or sublimates and discharged up the flues. Mate- rials delivered into the smelter have generally been previously concentrated or processed at the mine, and the size of their particles, and also their chem- ical composition, greatly affect the smelting proc- ess. Some impurities are more difficult to remove than others, and are more objectionable in the finished product. The first metal mine in Australia was opened near Glen Osmond in South Australia in 1841, for silver-lead ore. It was followed by the Kapunda Mine for copper in 1844 and by the very signifi- cant Burra Mine, also for copper, in 1845 (Figure 1). A major part of their ores could not be exported profitably for smelting in England and Wales where the large smelters were then located. In addition to treating ores from Cornwall these also smelted ores from recently opened mines in Cuba, Chile, and Mexico. The Welsh smelting process (Figure 2) was developed over a period of years to utilise Welsh coal to treat copper ores particularly from Corn- wall. The first step consisted of a calcination to remove sufficient sulphur from sulphide ores so that subsequent melting operations would produce copper matte, a copper-iron-sulphide which melted at about 1050¦C. Subsequently refined to white metal with the addition of carbonate and oxide ores when these were available, and often through an intermediate step of blue metal, this matte was finally oxidised to pure copper, or as pure as it could be made in those days. The movement of metal towards greater purity was matched by a reverse flow of slag, carrying reducing quantities of copper, so that the slag rejected from the first melting process carried the minimum quantity of copper. Chemical analysis was virtually unknown. Materials were assayed in the laboratory by a small scale smelting process, and the purity of the final refined copper was judged b} the ease with Mhich it could be hammered into thin sheets.

A novel fracture-plane control blasting technique with particular application in wall-control blasts in mines employing medium to large diameter boreholes is described. It consists of a string of nested holes, each nest consisting of a large diameter charge-hole flanked on either side by a small diameter satellite hole. Each nest is shown to be an analog of a pressurized hole with diametral notches along its length. This 'equivalent-notched' hole concept for generating controlled fractures along preferred directions has been successfully investigated in the laboratory and in the field. The technique has been used to generate controlled fractures on a quarry bench in highly jointed limestone. The resulting blasts with a 250 mm diameter central charge-hole and 50-75 mm satellite holes show that two nests of such holes almost 5 m apart could be joined by a single co-linear fracture. The design range of diameter ratio between charge-hole and satellite hole is 3 to 6 and spacing is 3 to 5 charge-hole radii. With careful matching of explosives and decoupling, and combination of diameter ratio and spacing, it would be possible to connect two nests of such holes more than 20 charge diameters apart by a single controlled fracture plane. The relative merits of the technique against existing wall-control blasts are discussed, and guidelines for practical fracture-plane control blast designs are discussed.

The Truong Son Fold belt in Indochina hosts the significant Sepon gold-copper district (Laos) and the similar gold-basemetal districts of Phuoc Son and Bong Mieu (Vietnam). With over seven years of exploration, Toronto-listed Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc, is one of few foreign companies that have to date made a substantial investment in mineral exploration in Vietnam.Much of this work has been conducted along the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture, on the south-eastern limb of the Truong Son Fold belt on the Vietnamese side of the border with Laos. These programs have produced a significant number of gold prospects at varying stages of exploration development. The Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture is a major Paleozoic subduction zone that extends from northern Laos, through Central Vietnam and out into the South China Sea.It represents a Lower Mesozoic collision zone between the Paleozoic-age Truong Son fold-belt terrain to the north, with the crystalline terrain of the Pre-Cambrian Kontum Block to the south. Since its formation, it has been a locus of deep faulting, continental accretion, intensive intrusive activity and mineralisation. This paper briefly discusses the geological setting, structure, metamorphism, mineralisation, exploration history, and proposed mining development of the Olympus Phuoc Son Gold Project, with particular reference to the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky suture.

Century is a shale hosted zinc, lead, silver deposit developed within gently folded, Proterozoic Lawn Hill Formation shales and siltstones, approximately 250 kilometres north-northwest of Mount Isa, comprising 118 million tonnes of stratiform mineralisation, averaging 10.2 per cent ,,inc, 1.5 per cent lead and 36 grams per tonne silver. The deposit is largely overlain by Cambrian limestone and younger Proterozoic sedimentary rocks, outcropping at only two places. Small discordant lode lead-silver deposits formed the basis of relatively small scale mining activity in the area for almost 100 years, exploration tenement covering the deposit being granted to CRAE exactly 100 years after the first mining leases were pegged in the area in 1887.Stratiform mineralisation occurs within three distinct blocks, bounded by normal faults and the unconformity between Lawn Hill Formation and overlying Cambrian limestones. The Termite Range Fault, a major northwest trending, regional scale fault system occurs adjacent to the northeast deposit boundary, while the Magazine Hill Fault, possibly a component of the east trending Little Range Fault system, forms the southern boundary of the deposit.
