There are still vast areas of Australia in which either the hydrocarbon potential has already been indicated but from which no hydrocarbons have been produced or else are completely untested. Despite the lack of recent new oil discoveries, it is anticipated that initial gas discoveries in these areas will be followed by oil discoveries as has happened historically. General exploration activities are continually providing new information that is being input to update previous hydrocarbon assessments for Australia, and all indications are that future exploration efforts will discover a lot of gas, some small oil pools and there is a chance to prove a major new oil province. Because of this, it is anticipated that reserves growth will continue at the average historical rate of about 200 MMB/year until the year 2000. The most frequent scenario will be costly exploration resulting in small oil discoveries and high development costs. This, in the past, has resulted in low profitability for Australian oil exploration, but windfalls for the Australian government.

"Estimation of stress state as well as elastic modulus is important for the prediction of a rock slope deformation in an open pit mine since it can strongly influence the mining-induced deformation of the rock slope. This study applies a method to evaluate regional stress state and Young’s modulus by analysing the mining-induced deformation of ground. The effect of changes in regional strain state due to tectonic plate motion can be accounted for using the proposed method. Mining-induced deformation can manifest itself as changes in ground surface geometry resulting from mining activity. There are three underlying factors that can contribute to the deformation: displacement induced by the effect of gravity displacement induced by the effect of horizontal regional strain incremental change in the horizontal regional strain. The relative displacement arising from the mining excavation at the Torigatayama limestone mine in Japan has been measured by Global Positioning System (GPS). Both the regional stress state and Young’s modulus were estimated by back analysis of the change in distance between GPS stations using a 3D finite element method. It was shown that the reliability of the estimation improved with an increase in displacement due to mining progression. It was also shown that values for Poisson’s ratios of less than 0.10 are reasonable estimates with values for Young’s modulus between about 5?GPa and 10 GPa. Current climate change projections suggest both an increase in the intensity of significant rainfall events and an increase in the variability of rainfall in some regions of Australia. It is necessary for mine site owners and operators to understand the effects that this potential shift in climate may have on their operations. The ability to maintain compliance with discharge regulations and operational security for those sites that rely on surface water run-off harvesting may be negatively impacted if some current climate change projections are realised. Although current regulations require the preparation of water management plans, these are generally developed using historical climate records for the site in question and as such do not give any indication of a siteÆs resilience to the influences of climate change.This study compares design and operational considerations for a case study mine site using historical rainfall records and modified records representing climate change projections. The future climate models are invariably broad scale and are limited in their capacity to be downscaled to a reasonable resolution for developing a site water balance. Instead the local historical data set has been modified to concentrate precipitation to peak periods and propagated through the model. The study looks at the siteÆs response to the potential changes in climate.It is shown that if current climate change projections are realised, this will have a significant effect on both the necessary size of designed surface water infrastructure and operational considerations on-site. A discussion is presented on the potential risks that climate change presents to mine sites and the range of options that could be considered to mitigate these risks. Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator currently utilises Agitair 120 banks for its roughing flotation circuit. Apart from a rotor change, the only other significant work completed to the Agitair banks since their installation and commissioning over 40 years ago has been a like for like refurbishment in 2016. The Agitair banks at the MIM Copper Concentrator currently utilise the Pipsa rotor design which progressively replaced the original Chile X rotor design in the 1980’s and 90’s in the copper concentrator. Since the development of the Pipsa rotors, modern rotors such as the Dorr-Oliver (DO) high shear rotors have been released to the market with proven recovery and concentrate grade improvements over previous rotor designs. The Kipoi Central (KPC) copper project is located in the Katanga Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is presented here as an example of an operating mine where the Mineral Resource was initially estimated by uniform conditioning (UC) and subsequently updated to localised uniform conditioning (LUC). This paper discusses the implementation of an estimate run using LUC and compares the results based on resource definition drilling to those obtained by close spaced grade control drilling and actual mill production.UC is a nonlinear geostatistical technique designed for recoverable resource estimation, typically using wide spaced exploration and resource definition drilling. The primary output of UC is the grade, tonnage and metal above a series of user-defined cut-off grades for a particular selective mining unit (SMU) block size. The UC approach is considered to provide a more accurate representation of the recoverable grade and tonnage at SMU support for non-zero grade cut-offs than would typically be achieved by a traditional linear estimator such as Ordinary Kriging. LUC is a relatively new approach involving the post-processing of a UC estimate and is used to spatially present the grade distribution predicted by UC at the SMU scale.This study demonstrates that the calculation of a more accurate and realistic grade-tonnage relationship for small SMU sized blocks is possible at the exploration stage using LUC, provided that the necessary theoretical and practical conditions for implementation of this technique exist.CITATION:Millad, M G and Zammit, M, 2014. In flotation cells, especially in large flotation units, froth management is a crucial variable that should be considered during the design phase or optimised to improve the performance of existing flotation circuits. This paper presents a simulation evaluation of the effect of launder design on the metallurgical performance of an industrial flotation circuit consisting of five TankCell® e630 (630 m3 ) cells in a Cu rougher duty. This analysis was carried out using a new industrial simulator, which was built on a wide database collected from many industrial concentrators. This tool is currently incorporated into HSC Chemistry® software and allows evaluation of the effect of launder design on mineral froth recovery, water recovery, entrainment, and other variables to be quantified. The industrial flotation circuit was evaluated under different launder design scenarios, considering an actual flotation circuit that includes TankCell® e630 cells for calibration and as a reference (baseline). Firstly, two different designs were evaluated in the full circuit: a standard launder design and a new launder technology. It was found that the new launder technology enabled improvement of the mineral recovery along the circuit, mainly for coarse particles, due to the improvement in froth mineral recovery. Next, the partial upgrade of the launder design along the circuit was analysed. Thus, the new launder technology was evaluated in the first and the last two cells of the bank. The results showed that upgrading the launders in different cells along the circuit delivered an increase in the final recovery with respect to the baseline, with a partial impact on the concentrate grade. However, these changes are less than those when evaluating the full upgrade scenario. A partial launder upgrade either in the first or last two cells of the bank showed similar final recoveries, but the latter enabled a slightly higher concentrate grade (about 1 per cent higher) to be achieved. Finally, the evaluation of launder design using the industrial simulator made it possible to estimate its effect on variables that are not commonly obtained from plant surveys, including froth recovery per particle size, collection recovery per particle size and liberation, gangue entrainment and bubble loading grade.

In 2010 a store and release cover (the cover) was constructed on the south waste rock dump (SWRD) at Century mine. This also included aerial seeding of province native trees and shrub seeds. The purpose of the cover is to reduce percolation into the potentially acid-forming (PAF) waste rock by maintaining a compacted reduced permeability layer (RPL) at near-saturated conditions. This is achieved by overlaying the RPL with a 1.5 to 2 m thickness of soil-mulch. The soil-mulch has a hummocky final surface that captures rainfall, so it does not runoff, allowing it in part to infiltrate, with excess water removed by evaporation and transpiration. The RPL is the trafficked surface of the SWRD.The unsaturated behaviour of the cover is being monitored by instrumentation including volumetric water content and matric suction sensors and a weather station capable of estimating evapotranspiration. The instrumentation allows for direct measurement of infiltration into the cover, storage of rainfall, percolation through the base of the cover and in situ soil water characteristic curves (SWCC).The key functions used to describe the unsaturated behaviour of the cover materials is the SWCC and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function. The SWCC is a plot of soil water versus soil suction. It provides the loci of moisture states of a soil from the saturated to the dry state.The paper presents the results of five years of monitoring. It shows that total infiltration into the top of the SWRD was about 1.6 – 3.7% of cumulative rainfall over five years, with most of the infiltration going into storage within the cover. Runoff from the top of the dump is not allowed therefore, the remaining 95% of the total rainfall was lost to evaporation or as lateral flow when infiltration reached the RPL. The paper presents some simple analyses of the wetting by rainfall infiltration of the cover, leading to breakthrough at the base. The Athena gold deposit was discovered in 2007 by Gold Fields Australia Ltd, at the St Ives Gold Mine, 35 km southeast of Kambalda, Western Australia. Gold anomalism was identified in sheared Paringa Basalt as a result of a regional scale aircore drilling program, in association with geophysics. In the 18 months following discovery, the deposit was intensely drilled and by June 2009, it was announced that the Athena deposit contained an ore reserve of 1.7 Mt @ 5.6 g/t for 316 koz. This was followed by a feasibility study, and as a result mine development commenced in November 2009.The Athena mineralisation is hosted in a discrete, north-south striking, steep to moderately dipping shear zone within the southwest dipping Paringa Basalt. Vein intensity has a strong correlation to grade and vein type varies from early thin quartz-albite-sulfide (pyrite and/or pyrrhotite) shear parallel veins to strong brecciation and irregular veining with quartz-albite-actinolite-biotite-pyrrhotite infill. The geology preproduction process developed at the Argo mine was refined and improved following a business improvement project. The aim of the process is to construct detailed geological interpretations prior to development allowing informed mining decisions to be made. The process delivers significant cost savings and revenue enhancements.The development of macroscopic classification scheme was critical to determine ore or waste in the early phases of mining. The Style of Deformation, Alteration and Veining (SAV) Code was the result, and has been enhanced as greater geological knowledge is gained over time.

A recoverable uranium resource, shown to be suitable for in situ leaching, was discovered at Honeymoon in South Australia in 1971. Exploration of the deposit was carried out during the period from 1973 to 1979. Uranium mineralisation occurs in a coarse-grained unconsolidated sand aquifer located in the Yarramba Palaeochannel at a depth of approximately 110 m. Following initial development during 1979 to 1983 and the construction of demonstration leach facilities, the Project was put on hold. Southern Cross Resources purchased the Project in 1997. Government approval was received in March 1998 for the operation of on-site demonstration leach and recovery facilities while an Environmental Impact Statement was prepared and a 1000 tpa commercial production plant was designed. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was released in June 2000 and operation of the test facility was completed in August 2000. Acceptance of the EIS by Commonwealth and South Australian state governments was announced on 20 November 2001. A Mining Lease was granted over the area of the proposed ISL operation on 8 February 2002. Operation of the Project is entirely dependent on using highly saline underground water resources to supply process and human needs. The management of discharge streams from the plant by re-injection was approved. The Honeymoon demonstration plant was the first adaptation of the solvent extraction process to highly saline in situ leach solutions. As such, it incorporated a number of unique operating and installation features. The trial period enabled optimisation of the process chemistry, additives and management and serves as an invaluable base for the proposed plant design and future operation. This paper discusses the nature of the uranium occurrence, the effect of saline water on the leach process and equipment, project design and environmental considerations, the requirements for disposal of discharge streams to minimise the impact on the arid environment and the requirements for rehabilitation following project completion.

Daunia and Caval Ridge coal mines, owned and operated by BHP, have been co-disposing rejects and dewatered tailings within spoil dumps from the beginning of their operations in 2013 and 2014, with the purpose of minimising environmental impact and geotechnical risk. Following the recent large failures of tailings dams around the world, BHP Coal, through its Coal Tailings Program, plans to transition other coal mines to deliver “dry” tailings and produce mixed plant rejects (MPR) for inpit co-disposal. This will materially reduce future tailings dam risk exposure. Previous laboratory shear strength testing was conducted on rejects with a maximum particles size of 20 mm, and some concerns were raised that this might not represent the mechanical properties of the actual full particle size distribution (PSD) rejects. BHP was also aware that using different technologies to dewater the tailings, such as belt press filters (BPF) and solid bowl centrifuge (SBC), could produce thickened tailings which could significantly modify the physical behaviours of the MPRs, particularly the bonding between particles. Therefore, laboratory testing on both coarse rejects and mixtures of the coarse rejects and dewatered tailings (MPRs), with full PSDs, was carried out. Testing was performed using the large direct shear machine developed by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C20019 in 2017, as well as a 300 mm diameter triaxial apparatus at the University of Newcastle (UoN). This paper presents details of the laboratory testing program and results for the rejects from the first studied mine of the BHP Coal Tailings Program. It compares the shear strengths measured at full scale with those tested on modified (scalped or crushed) specimens in the past; and discusses the tailings dewatering technique selection from geotechnical aspects based on the testing results, and finally presents some dump and tip head stability analysis results using the testing results.

In an open pit mining, ensuring stability of rock slope has been one of the major challenges. As the instability of rock slopes can results in slope failures; consequently, endanger the lives of workers, affect mining operations, and often lead to economic losses. Therefore, it is practical important to study the stability of rock slopes to ensure safe, smooth, and effective mining. The stability of rock slope of about 130 m height at Higashi-shikagoe limestone quarry, which has experienced slope failures four times since 1996, was assessed. The rock mass at the quarry is consists of mainly limestone, schalstein and slate rocks intersected by clay seams of about 70 m thick at footwall of the rock slope. Previously, the effects of limestone excavation at the foot of the rock slope and shear failure due to rainfall infiltration have been investigated. Although clay is widely known to plays a vital role in the stability of slopes in engineering projects including mines, but its impacts on slope deformation at the study quarry are not adequately examined. Therefore, the present study addressed the impact of presence of clay on slope deformation at Higashi-shikagoe limestone quarry by employing both field displacement measurements and numerical simulation. Firstly, surface displacements measured by automated polar system (APS) for over eight years were analysed to understand the overall characteristics of the slope deformation. The measured results show that the displacement gradually decreases with time. The maximum displacement of about 100 mm was observed at middle of the rock slope. Secondly, the effect of deterioration and plastic behaviour of the thick clay layer were simulated using two-dimensional finite element method (2D FEM). The simulated results reveal that the clay exhibited deterioration by water contact and plastic behaviour arising from mining activities at the footwall of the clay zone. Based on the characteristics of the measured and simulated results, it was found that the displacement induced by the effect of deterioration of clay is more noticeable at the north side of the quarry whereas displacement induced by excavation is quite significant at the south side of the quarry if clay behaves as an elasto-plastic material.

The Kiruna mine produced about 19 Mt processed iron ore in 1999 using sublevel caving. General failure in the hangingwall has been widely studied and its mechanism is rather well understood. Failure in the footwall is more recent and not perfectly explained. Plane shear failure and Hoek and BrayÆs circular failure charts were successfully used to match the first surveyed failure surfaces. The footwall is not free yet but covered by a caved waste rock abutment whose exact behaviour is poorly known. Based on new field data and numerical models (FLAC), the following paper presents recent improvements in understanding the Kiruna mineÆs footwall failure process.

This paper presents a parametric analysis showing the impact of virgin in situ stresses on a shallow (less than 100 to 150 m) high slope in a jointed sedimentary rock environment. Slope stability is assessed at varying ratios of slope orientation and horizontal stresses. The results of this study indicate stress conditions should be included in stability assessments of excavated slopes, particularly where structure is orientated perpendicular to the direction of horizontal stress. Some consideration of stress state is applied in deep open cut pits (eg those with planned excavations of 400–1200 m) (Myrvang et al, 1993; Stacey et al, 2003; de Bruyn et al, 2014; Kozyrev et al, 2015). Dodd and Anderson (1972), Kalkani and Piteau (1976), Lee (1978), Coulthard et al (1992), Noorani et al (2011) have studied the effect or horizontal stress and its impact on slope stability, showing that tensile stresses tend to develop at the crest of the slope, with larger tensile zones for higher horizonal stresses and steeper slope angles (Stacey, 1970, 1973; Sjoberg, 2013). However, the consideration of virgin stresses on shallow slope stability is less frequent (Lynch et al, 2005; Dight, 2006; Lucas, 2006; Sjoberg, 2013). This has led many geotechnical engineers to believe the impact of virgin in situ stresses on open cut slope stability is minimal and not worth time or consideration in modelling, or their effects on slope stability are still poorly understood (Stacey et al, 2003; Sjoberg, 2013).

Rock burst is common in deep underground excavations and is characterised by a violent ejection of block rocks from excavation walls. It is critical to understand the phenomenon of rock burst and particularly the failure mechanism. Laboratory experiments are one of the ways. For that purpose, a rock burst laboratory test system was developed at the State Key Laboratory for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering at the China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing. A true triaxial test system, designated the Deep Underground Rock Burst Analogue Test Machine, was developed, which can transfer a stress state from three-direction-compression on six surfaces to the compression on five surfaces with one set free. The rock burst experimental system comprises an acquisition of acoustic emission signals, a high-speed recording in order to accurately record the kinetic characteristics of rock fragments ejected during a rock burst event and the possibility of infrared thermography showing the surface temperature of the samples. In this paper, analyses of typical results from rock burst tests are presented with a description of the obtained results. The mechanisms of rock burst are illustrated, and a rock burst classification is proposed based on these laboratory tests. For the control of rock burst, the constant resistance, large deformation (CRLD) bolt or anchor is presented for accommodating the large displacement of surrounding rock masses and absorbing the impact of the sudden release of rock burst while outputting a constant resistant force in response to the external load. The CRLD bolt or anchor has had practical applications in underground mines. Blasting in the mining industry is being transformed, and can no longer be treated as an art or a practice purely dependent upon experiences of individuals. Examples of key drivers that have demanded consistent and more accurate blast results are initiatives to control pit-wall damage to help mine steeper pit slope angles, to control damage to underground opening operating in close vicinity of the open pit mine. Such situation exists at Rampura Agucha open pit lead zinc mine, which is producing 5.7 Mt/a of ore and has started its underground part, which is slated to produce initially 2–2.4 Mt/a and 4.5 Mt/a in the near future. The open pit mine is currently working at 326 m depth and is designed to reach 421 m deep. It has been planned to operate the underground mine maintaining 50 m parting from the planned ultimate level of the open pit mine.Presently, open pit and underground mines are being operated simultaneously. The present average depth of underground working lies between 370 and 410 m below the surface level. Sometimes explosives up to 95 978 kg are being detonated in a blast round in open pit mine. These blasts are often apprehended as a danger to the safety and stability of underground openings. It was decided to document the impact of open pit blasting in the openings of underground workings, so that preventive measures may be taken for the safety and long-term stability of the underground mine. The impact of 86 open pit blasts has been documented in the underground openings and 258 blast vibration data has been recorded. The vibrations were recorded simultaneously in the roof, side walls and at floor levels. The highest levels of vibrations were recorded in the roof and the lowest levels at the corresponding floor levels. The pillars experienced lower level of vibrations than the roof. Blast designs were optimised at open pit mine to control vibration in view of long-term safety and stability of the underground openings. The vibrations generated due to detonation of explosives with shock tubes and electronic delay detonators have been recorded in underground openings for comparative assessment. This study focuses on the recovery of valuable metals, specifically silver (Ag) and palladium (Pd), from copper-containing sludge (with copper content less than 20 per cent) generated during PCB processing and from spent petrochemical catalysts used in vapour decomposition during oil refining processes. The present results indicate that an increase in the mixing ratio of alumina-based spent catalyst leads to a decrease in the recovery rate of Ag and Pd. The recovery rates for Ag and Pd range from 84 per cent to 96 per cent and 80 per cent to 98 per cent, respectively. This trend is attributed to the increased emulsification of copper droplets containing Ag and Pd in the slag. The emulsification is caused by the decrease in the settling velocity of the copper droplets due to the increased viscosity of the slag as well as by the decrease in the slag-metal interfacial tension due to an increase in sulfur content at higher mixing ratio of spent catalyst.

Remnant rib pillars at Castlemaine Goldfields Ltd’s Ballarat Gold Project have been sterilised by the placement of loose rock fill in production stopes. The application of selectively injecting low-viscosity grout into the backfilled stopes to form a stabilised material has enabled recovery of the previously sterilised pillars. This paper outlines the engineering design, quality control and quality assurance program implemented to ensure the safe and efficient recovery of the rib pillars. Ground support installation into the face of development headings has become an accepted practice at many Australian hard rock mines. Ground support is installed in the development face to reduce personnel exposure to rockfall while conducting work tasks such as marking up, installing lifter tubes, charging, and face sampling. The ground support system installed in the face is typically friction bolts and mesh. This support system can be effective at reducing rockfall occurrence, but it also increases the cost of development per metre, in terms of capital for the ground support, jumbo and operator capital allocation and the installation time slowing each drill and blast cycle. Other issues associated with meshing and bolting the development face include management of rock bolts and mesh sheets in the fired dirt of every cut, damage to services such as vent duct, geometry issues when installing ground support onto irregular development profiles and operator error. Fibrecrete installation onto the development face for support is an option considered by many mines, but it can be difficult to manage due to the removal of visual indications of misfires and slowing the mining cycle due to the wait time for fibrecrete curing. The use of Thin Spray Liner (TSL) products in underground hard rock mines has been relatively infrequent in the past, mainly due to issues with cost, health and safety, and liner strength. Kanmantoo Mine investigated the use of TSLs for the purpose of development face support, while collecting data on the costs and practicalities associated with their use. Several TSL products were trialled and a preferred TSL product was selected for use as face support. Cost savings, drill and blast cycle timing improvements and other benefits were achieved while meeting the requirement to reduce rockfall risk.

Laboratory flotation tests on fresh cyclone overflow samples are a useful tool to troubleshoot and indeed to improve plant performance; however, reproducibility between laboratory flotation test and plant performance is important for interpretation of the laboratory tests and hence their usefulness. Chemical reproducibility can be achieved with the addition of the required reagents; however, reproducing the physics of forces and energy in a 5 L cell compared to a 50 000 L plant cell or a 500 000 L plant cell is not generally studied or discussed. For some tests such as collector evaluation the physics of the flotation process may not be critical, but for some evaluations in the laboratory, it can be important.All flotation plants suffer from losses of valuable <20 µm mineral. Selective mineral aggregation has long been recommended to improve the poor flotation recovery of <20 µm sulfide minerals; however, successfully testing any type of selective sulfide mineral aggregation’s effect on flotation recovery in the laboratory on practical plant samples requires reproducing plant cell physics. The energy input per litre and the forces in a laboratory cell are vastly different to a plant cell. Reproducibility between laboratory and plant tests requires that these differences be minimised.
