Estimating the probability of failure for embankments is not intuitive. It requires not only an appreciation of the strength of the embankment, but an understanding of the variability and uncertainty in the strength parameters as well. These additional aspects are, in themselves, relatively new to most practicing engineers, and therefore require some discussion.This paper discusses the concepts of probability and uncertainty, and presents a reliability-based numerical experiment, together with a literary study and collation of some of the author’s historical slope stability analyses, to investigate whether a direct relationship between safety factors and probabilities of failure exists for certain levels of uncertainty in strength parameters. In doing so, a useful tool is presented whereby knowing the safety factor of a simple slope or embankment with a consistent level of uncertainty, one can infer an approximate probability of failure.CITATION:Gover, S M, 2018. Blasting can impact the efficiency of entire downstream mining operation. Individual technology solutions for blasting have been available in the industry for many years but all of them only cater for certain aspects of blasting. Many of them are based on individual research and/or experiences. Some of the available software solutions are not suitable to be used in the field as that they need advanced skills or tools. Also, most do not take technology advancements like mobility, advanced data analytics, web solutions and integration into consideration. Hence, no technology platform is currently present in the industry that addresses all potential needs a blaster may need in an integrated manner.This paper presents an integrated solution that takes care of all aspects of blasting – design blasts according to mine plan; collect data after drilling has been carried out (as there is often difference in designed and actual drilled hole locations in the field); predict blast results in terms of fragmentation, flyrock, ground and air vibrations, wave front reinforcement and flyrock distance; and after assessment, allows changes in charging, delay timing and sequence. The technology solution is a secure, cloud-hosted, web-based software-as-a-service solution that can be accessed from anywhere. Also it has a mobile app, which is available for both Android and iPhone/iPad. The mobile app is also integrated with the web-based solution using application programming interface calls to the central data repository.Case studies for two limestone mines are presented where this solution is being used in its initial format. This software platform enabled analysis of the outcome from a previous blast pattern and then subsequently allowed optimisation of blasting operations based on historical data. Uses of this platform have resulted in improved key performance indicators in these two limestone mines. The mobile app as part of this platform enables extensive field blast data capture and analysis and also various predictions before a blast. Data collected include blast parameters, individual hole charging, initiation pattern, videos, photographs and vibration records for analysis/reporting. The key features of the solution are a blast designer, a detailed blast data collection/analysis and a series of environmental predictors. These predictors give blast results in terms of fragmentation, flyrock, ground and air vibrations and wave front reinforcement and take remedial steps before blasting to optimise and control adverse environmental impact. Minerals and Metals Group Pty Ltd (Golden Grove Mine) commissioned a comprehensive study of the life of mine using advanced 3D stress modelling. Essential input into the modelling was the proposed mining sequence, itself the culmination of years of planning and geotechnical experience gained in comparing actual performance to predictions. The modelling approach addressed the whole of mine at a scale of 5 km. There were however several magnitudes of scale to address, from the scale of laboratory testing (0.05 m), to drive size (5 m), extraction size (50 m) and stope size (500 m). Scaling was therefore an integral part of the procedure. The constitutive rock properties in terms of peak and post-peak behaviour varied with the scale. At the laboratory scale, the constitutive relationships for all the main rock units were determined in 3D as well as recovering the in situ stress using the rock memory technique, deformation rate analysis (DRA), whereas at the larger scale the properties were varied to match observations.The modelling, using non-linear analysis to account for rock mass yield and peak-residual strength, demonstrated that if the planned extraction sequence and stope geometry had been pursued there was a high probability of large volumes of excess shear stress being released. However, it was not possible to identify whether the excess shear stress (ESS) will release as one large event or many smaller events. The mining approach was to modify the extraction sequence/stope geometry to manage the hazard. This is where the economic advantage can be realised.Alternatively or in combination with further modelling, the volume identified with the predicted high ESS or energy release could be intensively explored for structures having adverse orientation to the stress change and with sufficient areal extent to release the ESS. The microseismic data can be interrogated for the likelihood of a large event to support the hypothesis of a singular release versus multiple releases of smaller events. If the initial planned extraction sequence had to proceed as designed, changes to dimensioned stopes would be recommended for risk mitigation. So many ceramics look the same, but are they?In the past 20 years, there have been significant changes in the materials available, as well as changes to the supply chain, for ceramics used in wear applications in the hard rock mining industry. The biggest change in supply has been from the Chinese market, with many suppliers promoting their products as æstate of the artÆ. Some of them are state of the art, but are they all? There will be some concluding remarks in this respect.There are still some outstanding new developments coming from the more traditional suppliers and these should not be ignored. However, as an end user, how can one be sure that the product received meets the technical specifications of that material?This paper will address some of the questions on how to differentiate between different materials by giving a technical overview of the current (but not exclusive) range of popular ceramics, plus incorporating how these ceramics are used in process plant products by presenting case studies. The presentation will include technical data coupled with micrographs of various ceramics to illustrate just why they are different.It will also be shown that by careful selection of the wear material, it is possible to gain significant benefit when using superior materials in an ore processing plant. The impact of cost of the products, life, process efficiency, and reduced maintenance costs will be considered using cyclone components as an example.The properties (including the microstructures) of the various ceramics will be compared to the application in order to get some understanding of what is considered good or bad.Misra and Finnie (1982) summarised their paper, æA review of Abrasive Wear of MetalsÆ by saying:à it is difficult to give guidelines for selecting materials for abrasive wear resistance. Each application is a different one, and a design engineer has to take into account various other factors such as impact, fatigue and corrosion which are often coupled with abrasive wear. The green production of the steelmaking process has urgent requirements for fluorine-free fluxes. In this article, a new solid waste-based slagging flux was applied in the external dephosphorisation test of low silicon hot metal to replace the traditional fluorite-lime dephosphorisation slag. The results showed that under laboratory conditions, the new flux was utilised for smelting low-silicon molten iron with a phosphorus content of 0.10~0.13 wt per cent, the temperature of the molten iron was 1350°C and the slag amount was controlled at 2 per cent. Within ten minutes of smelting, the dephosphorisation rate of the molten iron reached more than 50 per cent. When making slag with new flux, the slag melting time was about 40 seconds and the P2O5 content in the final slag was higher than 8 wt per cent. In the industrial test of a 150 t molten iron ladle, under the same molten iron conditions, an out-of-furnace dephosphorisation test was conducted in the Kambara Reactor (KR) process. The flux material consumption per ton of steel was 8~10 kg. Within 15 minutes of smelting, the dephosphorisation rate of the molten iron was about 30 per cent. During flux slag making, the slag melting time was about three minutes and the P2O5 content in the final slag was higher than 6 wt per cent. This new solid waste-based flux has significant cost advantages and outof- furnace dephosphorisation effects and is expected to become the benchmark for a new generation of fluorine-free steelmaking fluxes.

"A geotechnical centrifuge can characterise and model the interaction of tailings and fluids over very long time periods by accelerating drainage and consolidation processes. This technology can be considered an environmental ‘time machine’ for designing and evaluating tailings storage projects and verifying numerical models. The Broadbent G-18 geotechnical centrifuge (2 m diameter, up to 875 rev/min) and associated equipment is a unique facility commissioned in 2011 at UNSW Australia for applied research in low-permeability materials such as mine tailings. Two centrifuge modules are available: the permeameter module for characterisation and physical modelling and the strongbox module for physical modelling.This paper presents examples of geotechnical centrifuge applications for the: consolidation of slurries and dewatering design of earthen barriers compatible with tailings chemistry prediction of contaminant mobility. The specifications and capability of the UNSW Australia geotechnical centrifuge and associated instrumentation is also presented, along with preliminary analysis of the confidence intervals associated with permeability testing of a set of samples of varying heterogeneity. Drainage velocity through a mine tailings sample increases linearly with g-level in the centrifuge permeameter until tailings consolidation occurs. Alternatively, geotechnical centrifuge experiments can be designed to limit consolidation so as to quantify permeability changes that may occur with geochemical interactions between fluids and mine tailings or earthen containments. Reactive solute transport through mine tailings can be simulated at realistic solid:liquid ratios when chemical equilibrium is maintained during geotechnical centrifuge testing. Carefully designed physical models of tailings disposal tested at accelerated gravity can therefore provide a realistic evaluation of tailings consolidation and drainage and the potential for subsurface migration of contaminants from mine tailings over long time periods.CITATION:Timms, W and Anderson, D, 2015. In most instances, the application of high-chrome grinding media results in an increase in the recovery of the valuable mineral(s). The authors have published data from a number of plant-based case studies, which indicate that it is not unreasonable to expect a recovery increase in the vicinity of 1.5 to 2.0 per cent for a copper ore. It is of interest to understand where the increase in recovery is coming from. That is, is the additional copper recovery the result of improved fine particle flotation or is it due to an improvement across all size fractions?This paper aims to answer this question. Laboratory flotation tests were completed using forged steel and a high-chrome alloy on a volcanogenic massive sulfide copper ore. The unsized data indicated that the application of high-chrome grinding media to this ore resulted in an improvement in both copper recovery and copper concentrate grade. A detailed kinetic analysis of both the copper sulfide and gangue minerals was completed that clearly shows that the change to a more inert grinding media produced significant increases in the flotation rate constants (both fast and slow) across all size fractions. It is also possible to observe that the change in pulp chemistry has resulted in a decrease in the flotation kinetics of the -20 micron pyrite, while the coarse pyrite recoveries have increased, presumably because of an increase in the flotation of the chalcopyrite/pyrite composite particles.CITATION:Greet, C J, Jacques, S and Kinal, J, 2014. Comminution continues to be the most capital-intensive unit operation in mineral processing. The fundamental purpose of comminution is to liberate the valuable minerals so that they can be economically concentrated into saleable products. Declining ore quality characterised by lower grade and increased complexity requires significant energy consumption for comminution. Low-grade magnetite ores are typically fine-grained and require fine to ultra-fine grinding (P80 ~ 30 - 40 µm) to enhance its liberation from the typically siliceous gangue matrix. Historically, this has been achieved using multi-stage crushing and grinding technologies, which require high energy consumption with low energy efficiency. This motivated innovations in energy efficient technologies for comminution. Such technology has been developed in the IMPTEC super-fine crusher. It is an innovative, dry (with the potential to be operated wet), media-free, energy efficient crusher that can to reduce 10 mm feed particles to 19 – 30 µm with very low recycle loads. In this study, the mineralogical and physicochemical characteristics of crushed magnetite ore using the IMPTEC super-fine crusher have been investigated in comparison with those of rod milling. The super-fine crusher generated higher liberated magnetite minerals in the – 300 + 212 µm and < 45 µm size fractions compared to rod mill. Both comminution devices generated large low-grade hematite and goethite middlings. However, the rod mill produced higher locked/unliberated hematite and goethite compared to that of the super-fine crusher. Quartz mineral had the highest liberation irrespective of the comminution device used. The super-fine crusher generated higher entrapment of other minerals within the silica matrix compared to the rod mill. The breakage mechanism of the super-fine crusher which is predominantly through high compression with shear, generated improved mineral liberation in the coarse size fractions compared to the predominant abrasion and attrition breakage mechanisms of rod milling. The flooding of open strip coal mines in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley Coalfields of Eastern Australia has the potential to soften the spoil and floor materials to produce “mud”. This mud can act as a slip plane or weak zone when spoil is dumped into it, resulting in geotechnical instabilities. Once mud has formed, typical handling techniques include its costly removal by mechanical means, or its isolation and capping.There are little data available on the moisture state and shear strength of the capped mud. To investigate the effectiveness of isolation and capping, research has been conducted using a large slurry consolidometer (150 mm in diameter by up to 410 mm in height) to simulate capping in situ. Once consolidated, the mud was subjected to shear strength testing in a direct shear box measuring 60 mm by 60 mm by about 20 mm high. The shear strength of the consolidated mud was compared to that of competent, fresh spoil, a mixture of spoil and mud, and to completely degraded spoil (mud alone).These results have been used as inputs in stability calculations using the commercial computer program Slide 7.0, which demonstrates the strong influence of consolidation of the mud on overall low wall slope stability. Viscosity of oxide melts is one of the fundamental physicochemical properties that plays a crucial role in important technological and natural processes like slag flow, slag/metal separation, volcano eruptions etc. However, many oxides melt at extremely high temperatures and are highly corrosive in the liquid state, which makes experimental measurement of melt viscosity by traditional experimental techniques a difficult and expensive, if not unachievable, task. In this case it might be useful to employ other methods of viscosity determination such as modelling or simulation. In the present paper the shear viscosity coefficients of selected pure refractory oxides (CaO, MgO, Al2O3 and others) have been simulated at temperatures above their melting points via the classical molecular dynamics and compared to the available viscosity data (eg experimental viscosities, other model predictions) collected by the authors. The simulation has been carried out using the noncommercial molecular dynamics simulation package LAMMPS and the Born-Mayer-Huggins potential, which parameters for the selected oxides were taken from the literature. Several viscosity calculation techniques (the Stokes-Einstein and Green-Kubo equations, the so called Einstein relations, and the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics methods) have been applied to ensure a more reliable viscosity calculation. It has been demonstrated that the simulated viscosity of the selected melts agrees with the available experimental data. It has also been shown that the simulated viscosity of a number of the oxide melts investigated is close to that calculated by phenomenological viscosity models, which supports viscosity extrapolation from the corresponding binaries and ternaries, if no experimental data is present for unary systems. In general, it has been demonstrated that the molecular dynamics simulation could provide a reasonable estimation of viscosity if no other viscosity data is available.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.The occurrence of air blasts is one of the principal mining hazards in block caving operations between the time of first undercutting and breakthrough of the cave to surface. As such, it needs to be managed continuously, and risk assessments need to be reviewed on a regular basis for applicability to changing conditions. Unfortunately, there is little literature on how to practically approach air blast risk assessments in a way that can be incorporated in the day-to-day operation of a mine. Previous methods of assessing air blast risk were tedious and results were often unrepeatable.With the extension of the E48 Lift 1 extraction level, it was necessary to assess the air blast risk for the extension drives and develop operational guidelines for production from the extension. PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), operating in the Ertsberg Mining District in the Province of Papua, is developing the Grasberg Block Cave copper-gold mine. The site aims to output 160 000 t/d and will be located underneath the current Grasberg Open Pit. Initial studies of the potential to develop a block cave mine in the Grasberg orebody have revealed that the mine will require significant volumes of air. The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) project requires four primary fans (3750 kW each) to support production at full capacity.Fan #1 commissioning was accomplished successfully on 9 February 2012. However, Fan #2 chamber, which is separated by a 20 m pillar, had not been completed. The main challenge was Fan #2 chamber still needed to be benched. The risk of damage to the critical infrastructure in Fan #1 chamber, including ground support, cracks in pedestals, and misalignment in the impeller shaft were considered. The challenges were blasting the bench without damaging the surrounding infrastructure, completing the work safely and meeting the schedule. This was achieved with the engineering control methodology. Mass blasts have been the subject of extensive studies because of their potential benefits in mining operations. However, it has not been possible to advance due to the paradigm that states that the blasts near the designed final wall or to critical structures have to be low tonnage. Another reason is the absence of specialised simulation programs to more precisely determine the influence of the energy released by blasting to the rock mass. There are some studies that demonstrate the possibility of massive blasting that maintain the design of the final slope (Farias and Santander, 2014). It should be noted that these studies develop the concept that the size of the blast should not increase the peak vibration in the rock mass.The study was carried out in partnership with Los Colorados Mining Company. Analysis, reconciliation and wall control for two types of blasts were performed:blasting production: approximately 850 000 t, with special wall control considerationsblasting of approximately 950 000 t over the entire width of the bench.Monitoring systems were used in the near field and far field using examination of holes in order to obtain information to assess the impact on the rock mass and then to compare these to conventional blasting combining production and contour blasting.The results show that for a large blasted volume, production and/or those generated from toe to crest on the bench did not produce more impact in the rock mass than the conventional blasting.The conclusions drawn from this study are:an improvement in the excavation rate of 7500 t/h that is higher than the maximum rates normally obtainedthe peak vibrations of the P wave generated by both blasts did not exceed the peak particle velocity criteria (Vergara and Muñoz, 2014)holes examination indicating no difference in their entire length, in pre- and post-blast reviewover US$2 000 000 savings generated in the year (estimated by the client) (Avilés, 2014).CITATION:Vergara, J, Muñoz, C, Ortega, N and Avilés, D, 2015. Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile and zircon has disturbed over 1000 ha of prime farmland in Virginia (USA) since 1997 and additional areas are likely to be disturbed in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 15 years. Full-scale mining operations at the Old Hickory Project in Virginia were initiated in 1997 by Iluka Resources Inc. and restoration protocols have continued to evolve in response to a variety of economic, technical and social issues. Early on, the return of these lands to agricultural row-crop production was complicated by vertical stratification of tails + slimes and lateral variability in soil physical conditions in the reclaimed pits and by limited topsoil return. Virginia Tech and Iluka have worked cooperatively with all stakeholders for over 20 years to review the pre-existing research base, conduct new and innovative site-specific research and thereby provide reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. In 2004, Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45 ha research demonstration farm where the long-term effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Row crop yields between 2005 and 2010 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75 - 80 per cent of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. The state regulatory authority has recently relaxed its position on the necessity of topsoil return versus use of topsoil substitutes based on appropriate on-site research results and the ability of the reclaimed soils to meet comparative local county crop yield targets. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry. NQ Minerals PLC, through Hellyer Gold Mines Pty Ltd, plans to reprocess the contents of the Hellyer tailings dam to produce lead/silver concentrate, zinc concentrate and pyrite concentrate (containing Au and Ag). This paper discusses the project development, mineralogy, metallurgy and chemistry of processing Hellyer tailings and the associated environmental benefits. The Hellyer and Fossey orebodies were volcanic hosted polymetallic massive sulphide deposits located within the Mount Read volcanic arc of western Tasmania. Mineralisation was hosted in massive sulphide (pyrite) and comprised predominantly of sphalerite, with lesser galena, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The Hellyer orebody was mineralogically complex (fine grained) and was treated through differential flotation with initially modest recoveries. Fossey ore processing characteristics were similar to those of Que River ore and simpler than Hellyer but treatment still resulted in significant grades in flotation tailings. The M2 Upgrade Project involved widening 15 km of the existing M2 Motorway, which is a key route in Sydney’s road network. The Norfolk Twin Tunnels in North Epping convey traffic over a 460 m length of the motorway. The project involved widening the twin tunnels to provide a third lane and breakdown lane in each direction.The widening of the tunnels was fundamentally different to other ‘greenfield’ tunnel projects in that the operation of the tunnel was maintained throughout construction, with motorway traffic permitted close to the excavation faces on a daily basis. The widened works had to integrate with the existing tunnel support, construction details, and mechanical and electrical infrastructure.The existing tunnel afforded the opportunity to review existing ground conditions in the tunnel. Exposures were mapped within the tunnel, and key design parameters were back-analysed from the original monitoring data to provide increased confidence in the assessed impact from the widening works.Traffic capacity of the tunnels was maintained by detailed staging of the works, and included the ability to reopen the tunnels at short notice.A permit to tunnel system was developed to manage the risks associated with re-opening the tunnel to traffic. A comprehensive suite of instrumentation was maintained to provide reliable monitoring data to support this process. Emphasis on the robustness and reliability of tunnel instrumentation provided increased confidence in the adequacy of the tunnel support being installed. The monitoring was routinely compared with design predictions to check the adequacy of the support measures being installed and confirm the design.The approaches and methodologies developed for the widening of the Norfolk Tunnels were effective in maintaining the safe operation of the tunnels throughout the two years of construction, and provide a framework for increasing the capacity of existing tunnel infrastructure in the future.CITATION:Clarke, S J, de Ambrosis, A L, Bertuzzi, R and Redelinghuys, J, 2014. As filtering technology improves and there is an increased focus on environmental impacts, the concept of managing fine coal rejects by filtering, mixing with coarse rejects and dry stacking them is being considered more seriously. In Queensland, there appears to be a desire from regulators to move away from wet rejects facilities towards dry-stacked facilities, resulting in a change in the risk profile for the facility.A coalminer has a site with many constraints, including limited area that is not planned to be undermined and nearby rivers that are prone to flooding. The design of a dry-stacked facility that meets the operational requirements and environmental compliance criteria is challenging in subtropical climatic settings, where there is a need to consider wet seasons with high-volume, sustained rainfall events. The impact of the rainfall is multifaceted, requiring careful surface water management to separate clean and contact water, adequate foundation preparation to limit seepage to groundwater, management of stack stability given a potentially high phreatic surface and the avoidance of potential flood zones. These design constraints were compounded by a limited area available for rejects storage that would not be undermined.This paper presents a summary of the conceptual design of a dry rejects facility, including consideration of regulatory and client requirements, provision for expansion while also considering progressive rehabilitation, diversion of clean water as much as practicable during operations and siting constraints. In the context of a case study for an underground gold mine, the value generated by a schedule optimisation tool (SOT) is assessed. SOT is a software tool for underground mine planning that maximises the net present value (NPV) of a development and production schedule. A baseline study measures the NPV of a schedule generated by SOT from a sequence prepared by the site mine planners. Operational resource constraints and precedence constraints are adhered to by the schedule and NPV is evaluated with a financial model including revenues, costs and discount rate, as specified by the mine planner.The case study has several facets in addition to the baselining component. Scenarios were conducted that examined the degree of constraint on operational resources, the projected gold price and unit costs. Life-of-mine schedules subject to optimisation using SOT allowed for equitable comparisons.Haulage was identified as a dominant constraint for the mine. It was one of six operational resources that were used to constrain the optimisation of the mine schedule, with alternative levels for some of these constraints being identified so that their effects on the NPV could be studied. Alternative price projections for gold and different cost projections were identified and their effects on the optimised schedule examined. Price and cost scenarios that brought additional economic material into the schedule at various times in the mine life were considered in comparison to a scenario that assumed no additional economic material would become available.This case study illustrated that the use of a schedule optimisation tool to optimise mine schedules provides mine planners with an ability to perform a wide variety of analyses in a relatively short period of time. Such tools thereby support strategic decision-making that can add significant value to an orebody.The case study demonstrates that by fixing the set of development and production activities to be carried out before optimising the life-of-mine schedule, the mine planners can inadvertently set up a situation where the NPV would be progressively eroded in the last several years of the mine life. A metalliferous mine has operated at Storys Creek from the 1890s to 1979. Storys Creek drains from a pristine catchment and National Park and remains as the most degraded stream from historic mining in north-eastern Tasmania. It has been the subject of public concern since the closure, particularly at times of high rainfall such as existed in 1985 and 1986. The mine is located on the banks of the creek, which flows into a major river, the South Esk River, which is one of TasmaniaÆs largest rivers and important for recreational fishing and water supplies. For much of the life of the of the operations tailings were directly discharged into the creek, and in latter years stockpiled or very close to it. Little rehabilitation was carried out at mine closure. The result was erosion and subsequent deposition on the banks of the creek downstream. Direct emissions of adit water and the consequential emission of contaminated ground water to the creek continue to affect water quality. Contaminant loads discharging from the mine and tailings comprise 70% of the metal load in the catchment and are by far the largest single source. Acidity data suggested that the introduction of systems to introduce alkalinity could be effective in ameliorating the residual acid drainage impacts in the Storys Creek catchment. After a period of investigations and trials which proved their effectiveness, treatments adopted have included the following: relocation of tailings to a constructed and clay capped disposal area and rehabilitation of tailings area; crushed limestone addition to stream flows; crushed limestone addition to creek banks and exposed tailings; sealing of a drainage Adit; and construction of an anoxic drain to generate alkalinity to surface waters draining to old mine workings. These innovative treatments have resulted in a marked improvement in water quality draining from the area. The anoxic drain is believed to be one of the few, if any, which has been constructed to have generated high levels of alkalinity from clean waters and offers a solution to the clogging problems experienced in such drains in the past. Similarly, the use of crushed limestone in an active stream has proved effective in buffering acid drainage and removing metals from solution.

The Mt Todd Gold Project is located 42 km northwest of the township of Katherine within the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated in the southeastern portion of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The Batman gold deposit, the largest of several deposits at Mt Todd, hosts an identified mineral resource of 92.9 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t) as at 31 December 1993. Host rocks at Batman are assigned to the Early Proterozoic Burrell Creek Formation, comprising greywacke and siltstone interbedded with shale. Gold mineralisation is associated with a very broad zone of sheeted and stockwork quartz-sulphide veins that occupy a corridor of intense brittle fracture and faulting. A conceptual model of formation involves the dilation of joints and micro-faults within overlying sediments during sinistral movement along a basement shear zone. Synchronous granite intrusion generated convective circulation of crustal fluids through the sedimentary pile resulting in the formation of auriferous quartz veins within favourable structures. The Batman zone of mineralisation is not directly related to fold structures which typify several other major gold deposits within the Pine Creek Geosyncline.
